Stars are indeed just like us – or so it may seem when they are part of a passionate fanbase. Despite the fame and fortune of the big leagues, it is hard not to fall for the thrill and adrenaline that only sports can provide. While we have seen numerous famous personalities gush over sports teams or stars, there’s always a new revelation on the horizon. Today’s revelation comes from ‘Night At The Museum’ star Ben Stiller, who has long been a passionate cycling fan.

However, even Stiller, a multi-millionaire movie star, was reduced to feeling enthused like a dew-eyed fan at exciting cycling updates. He showed this enthusiasm to the news that Mark Cavendish will indeed ride one more season with Astana in 2024.

Ben Stiller is a bonafide star. He plays lead roles in big movies and is very good at doing so. Still, his enthusiasm in anticipation of Mark Cavendish’s next performance was transparently pure to witness. Every cycling fan has their eyes peeled over Cavendish potentially breaking the record for most Tour de France stage wins, and Stiller is no different. His enthusiasm was palpable in his recent tweet , reading ‘This is exciting news,’ to a tweet confirming Mark Cavendish’s return to Astana Qazaqstan for one more year.

The record Cavendish is chasing belongs to one Eddy Merckx, who set it in 1969. Mark Cavendish was already on the verge of setting a new record if not for a crash on stage 8 in 2023. However, while the crash seemingly put an end to Cavendish’s career initially, the 38-year-old is set to return for at least another year. No wonder, Stiller, and every other cycling fan, is waiting with bated breath to see what happens next.

This is exciting news. https://t.co/FPZYIEK0Vw — Ben Stiller (@BenStiller) September 26, 2023

Still has also proven to be a big Geraint Thomas fan. From his cycling to his dad jokes on Twitter, the actor is absolutely floored by the Welsh Tour de France winner. In fact, Stiller replied to one Thomas joke on Twitter, saying, “Not afraid to do edgy material. All the more reason to be a fan.”

Ben Stiller is absolutely eager for Mark Cavendish to un-retire

The a-lister continues to be the ultimate cycling superfan.

Ben Stiller

Actor and filmmaker Ben Stiller has a genuine passion for cycling. His Twitter timeline is filled with updates on major races, and he simply can’t get enough of the sport. Stiller was fervently cheering for Mark Cavendish to surpass the all-time stage record he currently shares with Eddy Merckx at the Tour de France. Currently, both the Manx Missile and the Belgian legend have 34 stage wins to their name.

The promising Giro

During the Giro, Cavendish announced that 2023 would be his final season, which meant he had one last chance to break the record. After a long professional career that started 2006, he expressed his desire for a change, wanting to spend more time with his wife, Peta, and their three children. He did, however, manage to secure a remarkable stage win on the final day of the Italian Grand Tour, offering hope for the Tour de France.

Watching Mark Cavendish say goodbye to his Astana Qazaqstan teammates is heartbreaking

But, as is often the case with grand plans, things took an unexpected turn. Cavendish had a crash during the eighth stage, resulting in a broken collarbone and forced withdrawal from the competition. Following surgery, it seemed that his illustrious career was on the verge of conclusion.

One last season?

Numerous sources, including AD , have reported a change in the course of events. According to the Dutch site, Astana team boss Alexandre Vinokourov has successfully persuaded the 38-year-old Cavendish to extend his career for another year. This gives him one more opportunity to chase the record.

When British magazine Cycling Weekly shared this news, Stiller couldn’t contain his excitement, expressing his enthusiasm in a quote-tweet.

This is exciting news. https://t.co/FPZYIEK0Vw — Ben Stiller (@BenStiller) September 26, 2023

Stiller frequently posts about professional cycling and was a dedicated follower and admirer of Sepp Kuss’s victory at the Vuelta.

🙌🙌 @seppkuss 🇺🇸🙌🙌 #Vuelta https://t.co/jR3FXH4c0t — Ben Stiller (@BenStiller) September 16, 2023

He’s even an avid listener of Geraint Thomas’s podcast, Watts Occurring .

This is really interesting in real time to hear @GeraintThomas86 and @LukeRowe1990 talk about all the #Vuelta drama. https://t.co/lAatFXq3qL — Ben Stiller (@BenStiller) September 16, 2023

With hope in his heart, Stiller eagerly anticipates Cavendish achieving that elusive stage win, because like all of us, he’s a devoted fan of the Astana rider and wants to witness history being made.

Comedians & Race Bikes Don’t Mix – Keep Ben Stiller Off Lance’s Bike!

ben stiller tour de france

The Ben Stiller & Lance Affair From 2009  (as told by Alex Wassmann) While traipsing through the Village Depart on day two of the Tour, I ran into Alex Wassmann who is Sram’s top man when it comes to maintaining all of Lance’s drivetrain needs. As we exchanged banter about the various goings on with the race, he mentioned that the actor Ben Stiller had visited the Radio Shack team bus in Rotterdam. He also alluded to there not being any repeat of the Stiller nightmare that the team endured at last year’s Tour at the Team Time Trial in Montpellier.

ben stiller tour de france

“When Ben showed up last year he jumped on Lance’s bike and just started drilling the shifters and some of us were just standing there somewhat horror stricken. The bike was perfectly prepped, Lance was getting ready to do his warm-up and the clock was already ticking towards the team’s start. Somebody finally got Stiller off the bike and when Lance got on it it started making a weird noise. We couldn’t figure it out so we had Lance get off the bike. He went into the motor home and we adjusted everything and had Lance come back out. When he started pedaling it was still making the noise and at that point we started getting freaked out. We swapped the bottom bracket and crank out in full NASCAR mode. Lance got off the bike again and while he was inside I laid down on the ground while someone pedaled the bike and I noticed that the outer link on one of the chain links was tweaked out and about to break. We swapped the chain and got it running properly. When I went into the team bus Lance just looked at me somewhat nervously and asked what was up with his bike. ‘Nothing,’ I said, ‘it’s fine.

With not a lot of time to spare, actually, only about five minutes before the start,  Lance got on the bike and pedaled off. When the team went out and won the race, well, that was when we all breathed a lot easier.’

Privacy Overview

  • Most purposes explained in this notice rely on the storage or accessing of information from your device when you use an app or visit a website. For example, a vendor or publisher might need to store a cookie on your device during your first visit on a website, to be able to recognise your device during your next visits (by accessing this cookie each time).
  • A car manufacturer wants to promote its electric vehicles to environmentally conscious users living in the city after office hours. The advertising is presented on a page with related content (such as an article on climate change actions) after 6:30 p.m. to users whose non-precise location suggests that they are in an urban zone.
  • A large producer of watercolour paints wants to carry out an online advertising campaign for its latest watercolour range, diversifying its audience to reach as many amateur and professional artists as possible and avoiding showing the ad next to mismatched content (for instance, articles about how to paint your house). The number of times that the ad has been presented to you is detected and limited, to avoid presenting it too often.
  • If you read several articles about the best bike accessories to buy, this information could be used to create a profile about your interest in bike accessories. Such a profile may be used or improved later on, on the same or a different website or app to present you with advertising for a particular bike accessory brand. If you also look at a configurator for a vehicle on a luxury car manufacturer website, this information could be combined with your interest in bikes to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury cycling gear.
  • An apparel company wishes to promote its new line of high-end baby clothes. It gets in touch with an agency that has a network of clients with high income customers (such as high-end supermarkets) and asks the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who can be assumed to be wealthy and to have a new child, so that these can later be used to present advertising within partner apps based on those profiles.
  • An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes. It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
  • A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
  • You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
  • You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
  • You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
  • You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
  • You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
  • You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
  • The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
  • A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
  • Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Technically, such exchange of information is necessary to deliver the content that appears on your screen.

The One Scene That Nearly Ruined Dodgeball

Ben Stille White Goodman jacket

The 2005 comedy "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story," serves up a lot of laughs from a variety of hilarious characters and is among the best sports comedy movies of all time . When slacker Peter Lafleur (Vince Vaughn), owner of the rundown Average Joe's gym, falls behind in his mortgage, he faces foreclosure, much to the delight of rival White Goodman (Ben Stiller). White, whose massive fitness center Globo Gym needs land for a new parking garage, is looking at the Average Joe's property the way a hungry wolf looks at a calf that's wandered away from the herd. As Peter tries to sort out his company's finances with the bank's lawyer, Kate Veatch (Christine Taylor) , Average Joe's member Gordon Pibb (Stephen Root) has the crazy idea to form a team and enter the upcoming national dodgeball tournament, which offers $50,000 for the winning team — the exact sum Peter needs to stay afloat.

Of course, a man with an ego the size of White's isn't going to let that happen without a fight; he forms his own team — the Globo Gym Purple Cobras — and enters the competition with the goal of playing spoiler for Average Joe's. One thing neither man could have anticipated is Peter getting a visit from dodgeball legend and former American Dodgeball Association of America champion Patches O'Houlihan (Rip Torn), who whips the ragtag Average Joe's team into shape with plenty of insults, tough love, and borderline assault. Of course it helps that Kate, newly fired after spurning White's advances, is a former softball player with an absolute cannon of an arm.

"Dodgeball" features plenty of memorable scenes, including a hilarious performance from Jason Bateman as ESPN 8 color commentator Pepper Brooks. But one sequence in particular could have absolutely tanked the film. Here's the one scene that nearly ruined "Dodgeball."

The Lance Armstrong cameo did not age well at all

The night before the final, with the Average Joe's team set to face Globo Gym for the championship, Peter gets an unexpected visit from his nemesis, White. Rather than leaving things to chance, White offers to buy Average Joe's from Peter for the tidy sum of $100,000. Peter, disheartened over Patches' death earlier in the film, accepts the deal and cuts and runs, leaving without telling anyone on his team. As fate would have it, he runs into seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong in the airport and learns the cycling champion is a fan who's been watching the tournament. When Peter tells a confused Lance he's quit the tournament, he responds that he, too, was once thinking of quitting: when he was diagnosed with brain, lung, and testicular cancer. "Well, I guess if a person never quit when the going got tough, they wouldn't have anything to regret for the rest of their life," Lance says, before telling Peter he's sure his decision won't haunt him forever.

Make no mistake, the scene is hilarious when considered in a vacuum and no one could ever deny that Lance Armstrong's survival story is truly inspiring. But he'd been plagued by doping allegations for years before his appearance in the 2004 film and years after it came out, the United States Anti-Doping Agency opened an investigation, charging Armstrong with using performance enhancing drugs. He was eventually stripped of his Tour de France wins and banned for life from competing in any sport that complies with the World Anti-Doping Code. Armstrong has candidly detailed his use of PEDs in an ESPN "30 for 30" program. As for "Dodgeball," a film with themes of sportsmanship and fair play, let's just say having someone who would later admit to cheating serving as the lead character's inspiration to get back in the game doesn't exactly send the right message.

Share All sharing options for: Ben Stiller vs. Kelly Oubre is the random beef the NBA playoffs needs

Philadelphia 76ers v Boston Celtics

The NBA playoffs have a new beef. On one side, we have someone so ridiculously photogenic that they could have, years ago, convincingly played a male model. On the other we have Ben Stiller, because that’s right, he’s now feuding with Kelly Oubre as the latter’s Sixers get set to take on Stiller’s Knicks in the first round.

How did this start? With a recent clip of a post-practice interview Oubre did with the media, of course, where he praised Knicks fans but then endeared himself to the Philly faithful by going full heel and taking a potshot at New York’s propensity to give complimentary tickets to celebrities in order to add to the allure of the so-called Mecca of Basketball:

Kelly Oubre is excited for the opportunity to play at Madison Square Garden, praising the fans’ appreciation of basketball culture. Also: “They’re going to give celebrities those $100,000 free tickets just to be there and not care about the game” pic.twitter.com/160CdoD86u — PHLY Sixers (@PHLY_Sixers) April 19, 2024

When broadcast journalist Alan Hahn asked Stiller , potentially the most passionate celebrity Knicks fan online — seriously, go look at his Twitter feed , he is as obsessed as we all are with our favorite teams — to respond in character as the villain he played in “Dodgeball”, White Goodman, Stiller accepted the challenge ahead of Game 1:

Oh I think I care a lot more than you think that you thought I cared… Kelly Who-bre? #KNICKS #PURPLECOBRAS https://t.co/ZnnbvIhphZ — Ben Stiller (@BenStiller) April 20, 2024

That nickname is going to go triple-platinum the first time Oubre shoots below 30% from the field in this series, but Oubre’s response might have been even better when hero/journalist Taryn Hatcher asked him if he saw Stiller’s tweet:

Asked Kelly if saw that Ben Stiller tweeted about him. Kelly’s response: “Yea I saw that. But I’m Peter LaFleur, just an Average Joe. We got this, you already know.” https://t.co/tFewHFQB1s pic.twitter.com/yQU1RQxfny — Taryn Hatcher (@TarynNBCS) April 20, 2024

And Stiller may want to be careful here. Oubre has shown throughout his career that he is particularly willing to engage when it comes to getting into various beefs. Most recently, the Sixers starter made headlines when he was fined $50,000 for calling an entire officiating crew’s set of bloodlines b---hes , but he also can be more subtle. In 2018, for example, he untied Rodney Hood’s shoes in the middle of a game.

What I’m saying is that Stiller should be warned: If Kelly comes up to you and tries to make nice and joke around before the game... just check your shoes after to make sure you don’t trip.

We’ll see if this beef escalates when the Sixers take on the Knicks in Madison Square Garden on Saturday at 6 p.m. ET, but even if it doesn’t, I hope more celebrities follow in Stiller’s example and start feuds with random role players.

Can we get lifelong Lakers courtside fan Dyan Cannon to tell Michael Porter Jr. his podcast sucks? Can the Timberwolves unban ARod from their arena so he can start a fight with Bol Bol? Do the Orlando Magic have any celebrity fans who can call Dean Wade a coward for the Cavs ducking their way into the fourth seed ?

The possibilities are endless, and I hope Stiller just started a trend we all get to enjoy.
