Ribes de Freser, the capital of Vall de Ribes , is today a privileged place for summer holidays and mountain tourism. The cool and pleasant climate of the summer, the beauty of its surroundings, the springs of mineral water, the proximity to the large ski resorts, the good accessibility, the good food and the quality trade have made the town, since the beginning of the 20th century, a tourist destination to live an unhurried experience in the middle of nature.

At present, and together with the Valley, it maintains its own and very defined idiosyncrasy in the Ripollès region. The visit to the aggregate nuclei of Bruguera, Batet, Ribes Altes and Ventolà allows a better understanding of the reality of the municipality.

The town was born under the protection of the Castle of Sant Pere and around the parish church of Santa Maria. The place is documented for the first time in the 10th century. In medieval times it was a royal town that belonged to the county of Cerdanya, where it formed the Ribes subveguería.

Traditionally, it had lived on agriculture and mining until, at the end of the 19th century, it fully entered into the industrial revolution with the installation of paper mills and textile industrial colonies. The crisis of the 1970s led to the choice of a tourist conversion of the Valley, but without abandoning the roots of livestock and agricultural activity.

Ribes de Freser offers you a range of recreational activities from climbing the via ferrata, walking along its Itinerànnia network trails, resting and enjoying the panoramic views from its scenic viewpoints, playing and learning with the gamified urban route of "the Met de Ribes", pedal along the surrounding slopes and mountain passes, put on your mountain boots to climb emblematic peaks, get to know the town's historical heritage such as the Noucentisme period and the Castillo de Sant Pere, and delve into the museums, the Joan Triadú space, the giants of Ribes and the rack railway museum. There are also service companies that complement the tourist experience from the world of adventure, crafts and health.

"DOING WELL" AS THE MET OF RIBES

MET_Insta_Met_Webapp

RIBES MET is a game of discovery that allows you to know the origin of this expression, the character and the landscape that made it popular. It is aimed at a family, youth and educational audience, and can be played individually or in groups.

Through a webapp and a map you can visit all the corners of Ribes de Freser, learn about its history and traditions in a fun and educational way. 13 Met figures have been installed in the most emblematic places of the town and game and visit dynamics have been established. The game offers 4 routes, with or without a mobile phone: a research gymkhana that allows you to discover the secrets of its three rivers, looking for the 13 Mets that are hidden in various corners, one that allows you to solve the riddle of the Met, an “Escape Met” and, finally, a cultural walk through all the patrimonial and cultural corners of Ribes de Freser.

Discover Ribe, The Oldest Town In Scandinavia

tourism office ribes

Ribe , the oldest town in Denmark , is located near The Wadden Sea . The medieval town has preserved its unique history for thousands of years. Its rich culture, arts and historical sites such as Ribe VikingeCenter and The Cathedral make it one of the top 10 must-visit places in Denmark. We interviewed Jane Madvig Søndergaard of VisitRibe to discover a local insight into the captivating culture and stunning sights that Ribe has to offer.

Ribe

Describe your town in three words:

Authentic, charming, romantic

What makes your town unique? Is it the people, the sights, the food scene, or something else entirely?

Why do you think your town has made the top ten list of places to visit in denmark.

Ribe has a lot to offer, from the medieval town to the vikings, the art and culture and the national park.

What is Ribe’s proudest moment in history thus far?

The construction of the Cathedral, starting in year 1150 and going on until about 1250.

Ribe

Where are the must-visit places in your town?

What’s Ribe’s most bizarre tradition?

Meadow of the Heads (Hovedengen) leading down to Ribe River. Today the meadow is preserved and part of the Wadden Sea National Park. In the 1500s, there was much trouble with pirates in the North Sea. At that time, Hovedengen was known as Todes or Tuodes Eng (Tuodes Meadow). Since then, it has popularly been called Hovedengen (Meadow of the Heads). As far back as Valdemar the Great’s time (1131-1182), it was customary to put the pirates’ decapitated heads on stakes at the entrance to the harbor as a frightful warning to those who might want to try their luck to be pirates and to the delight of peaceful local merchants.

Things to do in Ribe, Denmark

The oldest town of Denmark is not necessarily the most popular, but for those in the know, it’s an easy favorite destination. Ribe can be found in ancient texts in as far back as the year 710, making it the oldest known town in the whole of Scandinavia, too. Despite being over 1,300 years old, this medieval town has preserved its unique history very well.

From cobblestone streets, half-timbered buildings, and the famous cathedral from the Viking Era, Ribe brings Danish history to life in its beautiful setting.

There are around 8,000 residents living in Ribe, so you already have a feel of how small the town is. However, Ribe is filled with unique attractions, all embedded in a charming and romantic setting. With its location by the Wadden Sea National Park , Denmark’s biggest national park, Ribe has a lot to offer from history and art to nature and adventure.

If you’re planning to spend time in Denmark , make sure to make a stop (or two) at Ribe and experience its unique vibe for yourself.

Ribe Domkirke (Ribe Cathedral)

The Ribe Cathedral, also called The Church of Our Lady, was built in 1200 from Rhenish tuff stone and Gothic edits in brick. It’s a towering landmark that can be seen from several miles away as you approach the town.

Today, it’s the only five-aisled Cathedral in Denmark and houses sepulchral monuments of Denmark’s most powerful. Scandinavia’s oldest monument can also be found here, erected by King Valdemar the Conqueror for a son who died in 1231.

Attached to the Cathedral is the Borgertårnet or the Commoner’s Watch Tower, dating back from the 14 th Century. Standing at 52 meters high, it gives visitors amazing views of the marshes of the nearby national park. Inside the church and as a modern upgrade, the chancel features paintings and mosaics by Carl Henning Pedersen, one of Denmark’s most notable artists.

Museet Ribes Vikinger (Ribe Viking Museum)

Anything and everything you want to know about Ribe’s unique history can be found in the Ribe Viking Museum . There are exhibits on archeological finds from the year 700 and the flourishing Viking Marketplace during the Viking Age to stories of daily life in the Medieval Age and Renaissance.

Ribe’s evolution from Viking Village to a bustling center during the Renaissance is an interesting story. With beautiful dioramas and products from old Viking workshops, there’s something for every kind of traveler to marvel at. For those arriving with kids in tow, there are two play areas within the museum. A few meters away from the museum is another Viking Playground to complete the family’s Viking adventure.

Ribe Viking Center

It should be clear by now that Ribe’s Viking history is a crucial part of the town’s thousand-year-old story. At the Ribe Viking Center , that part of history is literally brought to life, and you are part of the story.

Ripa, the town’s old name when Vikings ruled, is recreated with authentic reconstructions of the earliest buildings, establishments, and activities. This interactive heritage center showcases real people playing true-to-life roles during the Viking Age like the King’s minter, the völva, the lady of the house, the falconer, the carpenter, the farmer and all the animals on his estate.

There are several areas to explore like the Marketplace 710 AD, the Ripa Harbour 750 AD, Ripa Town 825 AD, the Angsar Church 860 AD and the Manor Farm 980 AD. Check out the official site to see the schedule of their daily skits and dramatic plays, some of which you can join yourself.

Wadden Sea Center

The Wadden Sea Center opened in 2017, boasting over 1,000 square meters of exhibits to educate visitors on the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. It was designed by architect Dorte Mandrup and built with natural materials – reeds for the façade, roof and underlay, as well as robinia wood integrated into the structure to help blend the facility with its surroundings. The structure itself is a beautiful exhibition, seemingly growing out of the ground among the surrounding flat marshes.

There are several exhibitions, guided tours, and kid activities at the center. The center can also host meetings, conferences, and events.

Hex! Museum of Witch Hunt

There are several amazing museums in Ribe, but one of the most unique is dedicated to an ancient practice – witch-hunting. It’s important to note that this museum is not suitable for children as Hex! shows the story of how the fear of witches spread throughout Denmark and the rest of Europe. Ribe is the hometown of Denmark’s most popular witch – Maren Splidds – who was burned after a witch trial in 1641. In fact, her trial took place in the streets surrounding the museum.

You can take part in guided tours or take an audio tour, which reveals stories and theories on how the prosecution of witches started. There are also two films that tell the story of Maren Splidds and Lamme Sidsel, two women who were convicted and killed as witches.

Givskud Zoo

Givskud Zoo is a great activity for families and animal lovers. You can take a safari in your own car or take one of the zoo’s safari buses to experience close encounters in the African Savannah exhibit.

Rhinos, giraffes, and zebras roam freely in a beautifully made habitat. A separate lion territory, the zoo’s main attraction, is also set up for the safari where lions surround the vehicle or simply relax under the shade.

Other than the safari experience, there are many other zoo animals that visitors can learn about in between tours. A new bongo habitat also features rare antelopes. The total stroll around the zoo is at 6 kilometers.

Givskud Zoo also houses Denmark’s largest dinosaur exhibit. There are 50 full-sized dinosaur models, including a 40-meter T-Rex. There are also several play areas around the zoo to keep the kids occupied while parents sit back and enjoy the exhibits.

Follow the Night Watchman

The Night Watchman started his rounds in the 14 th Century, with the least “real” watchman ceasing to work in 1902. He roamed the streets of Ribe and made sure to maintain peace and quiet in the town.

He also raised the alarm in case of flooding or fire. At the start of every hour, he sang on the streets, reassuring residents that he’s keeping watch. The job was hard – he roamed the streets for nine hours even during winter and wasn’t known to be well-paid.

In 1935, except during World War II, the Ribe Tourism Board decided to bring back the Watchman as a way to keep the tradition alive and remind the town of its history. He continues to carry the Night Watchman’s traditional weapon – the Morning Star – from May to October beginning at 8:00 PM. Today, it serves as a 45-minute walking tour for visitors starting in the marketplace.

How to get to Ribe

Once you’re already in Denmark, the best way to get to Ribe is by car. It’s an easy drive for a day tour, especially if your itinerary is about town-hopping around Denmark. Ribe is a two-hour drive from Aarhus and a 1.5-hour drive from Odense.

Unless you’re up for the Givskud safari, exploring Ribe is best done on foot. The town is small enough to explore without a vehicle, plus you get to enjoy leisurely walks on cobblestone streets. Once you get to Ribe, head to one of the two parking slots just outside of the Old Town, across the canal (P-Syd and P-Nord).

If you don’t have a car, you can take a train to Ribe from Esbjerg.

Where to stay in Ribe and surroundings

While Ribe may be a quaint town, there is a lot to explore and learn. If a day tour is not enough, or if you simply want to immerse yourself in the town’s charm a little longer, might as well stay a night or two and take your time exploring Ribe.

There are many accommodation options in Ribe for every budget. If you decide to stay in Ribe, consider the following:

Danhostel Ribe

This hostel is well-located by Ribe’s most popular attractions. It’s a 5-minute walk to the town center and top attractions and the train station. It has a view of either Ribe’s old town or the Wadden Sea and is Denmark’s only environmentally-certified accommodation in Ribe.

Ribe Byferie Resort

The Ribe Byferie Resort is a holiday-apartment type of accommodation. It’s a town in and of itself, characterized by red gabled houses against a setting of trees, a stream, and surrounding meadows. The apartments range from 54 m2 to 68 m2, the largest being able to accommodate seven people.

All apartments are fitted with a full kitchen, private balconies and personal courtyards, and free access to Ribe swimming baths and the Sport & Event Park with a tropical water park.

Den Gamle Arrest

The Den Gamle Arrest is set within a former prison, built with a unique 16 th -century redbrick. It’s right across the Ribe Cathedral, giving it one of the most well-appointed locations in terms of accommodations.

The suites and rooms were once jail cells, now updated with sleek and modern furniture and bright décor. You can choose between rooms with private or shared baths, but most of them have views of the city or the cathedral.

The Indians return to Sant Pere de Ribes

Oliver Thansan

Sant Pere de Ribes organizes the VII Return of Indians on the weekend of June 1 and 2, where the connection of Indian buildings takes center stage as a witness to the passage of time with the experiences and essence of the people who have passed through these buildings. generation after generation. As always, you can enjoy different Indian spaces with performances, music, theater and tastings of products that marked this era - such as chocolate, burnt rum or coffee - which are also present on the event's poster. On the other hand, it is worth highlighting the participation for the first time of the Catalan Railway Museum, which will be present with different activities and workshops to make this journey through time.

This year, on the occasion of the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Redós de Sant Josep and Sant Pere Foundation - its headquarters being one of the main heritage buildings of the Indian legacy - the Redós will be even more of a protagonist. In addition, the fact that it is a socio-health facility for people's care coincides with the common thread of this year's edition dedicated to the heritage-people binomial and will host different reasons and activities that will be carried out.

As has been done since the first edition, coinciding with the Return of the Indians, the Agromercat Fair is held, which now reaches its 18th edition. A consolidated fair that hosts a varied offering of local and local products, maintaining their quality so that all attendees can taste and buy local and regional wine, jam, honey, cheeses, sweets, among many other artisan products.

The Return of the Indians of Sant Pere de Ribes is one of the most relevant events held around the Indian theme throughout Catalonia. Sant Pere de Ribes is part of the Xarxa de Municicipis Indians along with leading municipalities such as Begur, Arenys de Mar or Sitges, among others. The by its author, Anna Castellví, and which will give rise to an interesting intervention by the Redós with which they will transport us to the beginnings of its creation as a building serving and caring for people. All of this, in line with this year's Indian theme that highlights the importance of keeping heritage alive and its connection with people, memories and experiences.

Visitors will be able to enjoy different spaces and locations set and decorated that will transport them to the time of the Americans, their flavors, their customs, with an already consolidated format but which in this edition will present new features such as the location and decoration of the photocall, which will have a detailed and tasteful staging of the before and after so that people can take photographs. Likewise, the Plaza de la Vila will host the fair information point - where if you go dressed in white, visitors will be given an Indian hat; the display of traditional crafts of the time; musical performances with coffee tasting (an element that was introduced last year and that worked very well); and the meeting point and start of the dramatized routes.

Another novelty this year will be the information point and children's workshops around the gamified Route of the Indians, a project that wants to encourage families and children to learn about the Indian legacy of Sant Pere de Ribes in a fun way, through a mobile gaming application. In addition, the game will allow through virtual reality to access private spaces or spaces with specific hours, such as Ca la Manuela, the Church of Sant Pere or the Redós de Sant Josep and Sant Pere.

The theatrical guided routes of the Americans will tour the main places of the municipality with an Indian taste with the possibility of accessing spaces such as the Redós de Sant Josep and Sant Pere chapel and the plenary hall of the Casa de la Vila, among others. places.

The program will maintain the habaneras performance that generates so much expectation and that the public at the fair likes so much. In this sense, a novelty is also incorporated with respect to past editions: the habaneras will be located on this occasion, exceptionally, in the courtyard of Redós de Sant Josep and Sant Pere to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Foundation, in a truly emblematic environment that will evoke the Indian era and to which we invite everyone to attend dressed in white and eager to sing and enjoy this very special musical proposal.

In addition, visitors will be able to visit the American Interpretation Center, the first in Catalonia and which houses the essence of the history and legacy of the Americans. The Interpretation Center, which normally opens its doors from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., will extend its hours on weekend afternoons for the fair, and will remain open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The space takes the visitor, through an interactive visit with several surprises that are discovered, to what was that part of history, explaining the reality of the moment from all areas. An unmissable visit. The Interpretation Center houses the Tourist Office and Information Point of the Garraf Park with which everyone who is interested can request information to enjoy Sant Pere de Ribes and its surroundings during and after the fair.

This year the Indian photocall also presents new features, it will allow you to fully delve into the before and after of the Americans, with the now traditional sound of the player piano on Comerç Street. Everyone is invited to immortalize the moment with a typical photograph of the time. Those who want can participate in this year's Instagram contest where a gastronomic and cultural prize will be drawn in Sant Pere de Ribes (the photo with the most likes).

Another space will be the Plaza de la Font, which links on one side with the photocall and, on the other, with the space for local artisans led by the DO Ribes entity. In the Plaza de la Font, surrounded by music and decoration, the party will be guaranteed with the performance of Cuban music groups, story-telling by the little ones and exhibitions of salsa and Cuban dances and with tasting of mojitos and typical Indian cocktails.

Beyond the Plaza de la Font, a whole series of children's games for the little ones that will be distributed along the entire street. On Nou Street, the shops will take to the streets, a space organized with the support of the local commercial entities Fem Ribes, the Ucer and the La Sínia Municipal Market, as a promotional showcase for local and proximity commerce within the framework of the fair. The Fem Ribes entity is expected to organize different activities that will boost trade.

Agromercat, a fair with 18 years of experience, will be located in Plaza Marcer, with about thirty stops that will surprise you with an offer of local agri-food products to taste, pair and purchase. Right there, at the organization's point of sale, you can buy tickets with the necessary material to taste the products or this year's new cava plate. You can also purchase the new cava plaque that this year commemorates the 125th anniversary of Redós.

Finally, within the framework of the fair, it is planned to repeat the 'Indian Menu' campaign, for the gastronomic promotion of the local bars and restaurants that participate by incorporating Indian menus, dishes or tapas into their menus throughout the weekend, recipes with origin Indian.

With all this, we want to offer an experience to those visitors who want to enjoy a weekend with family or friends, atmosphere, street theater, live music, dance, food pairings, games, performances, workshops and much more for everyone. the publics. A range of possibilities to enjoy a weekend with Indian taste. Some of the activities require prior registration for reasons of capacity.

In light of audit, Shelley Zumwalt faces difficult Senate confirmation for tourism secretary

S helley Zumwalt — the embattled executive director of the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department and the governor's choice for tourism secretary — could face a difficult confirmation process in light of a newly released audit, the leader of the Oklahoma Senate said Thursday.

Speaking at his Thursday afternoon press conference, Senate Pro Tempore Greg Treat said he wasn't sure the Senate would advise and consent to Zumwalt's nomination. Zumwalt was harshly criticized in an audit released Tuesday by State Auditor and Inspector Cindy Byrd. Zumwalt has been named by Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt as his Cabinet secretary for tourism.

"That comes into question," Treat said. "I can't make any firm commitments either way."

Treat said the Senate wanted to make sure that Zumwalt was treated fairly during the confirmation process, but added that "we want to make sure we take the executive nomination process very serious."

May 1 is the deadline for the governor's office to send its list of nominations to the Senate.

Byrd's audit criticized the management of the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission and Zumwalt, who was the agency's executive director at the time. The audit questioned how Zumwalt approved $8.5 million in contract payments to Phase 2, a firm where her husband is employed.

"Subsequent contracting and payments were transacted by Oklahoma Employment Security Commission and signed by Shelley Zumwalt, who was appointed as the executive director of OESC in May 2020," Byrd said in a media statement accompanying the audit. "By April 2022, Zumwalt had approved additional contracts and change orders to P2 totaling $8.5 Million."

More: State audit critical of tourism director Shelly Zumwalt. AG calls for director's resignation

During this period, Byrd wrote, "Zumwalt failed to disclose the fact that her husband, John Zumwalt, was employed as the Vice-President of Phase 2."

Byrd said Zumwalt was required to complete annual forms attesting that no related party transactions existed in the performance of her duties regarding the expenditure of funds, and in three separate instances, Zumwalt checked "No" on those forms.

On Tuesday evening, Zumwalt denied any wrongdoing.

"The initial contracts and all agreements to begin work with Phase 2 were executed before I was appointed by the OESC Board of Commissioners on May 27, 2020," Zumwalt said. "I did not have any decision-making authority when OMES hired Phase 2 to work with OESC in May of, excuse me, in March of 2020."

Audit questions Communities Foundation of Oklahoma expenditures

The audit also raised numerous questions about how the state spent millions in federal COVID-19 funds and said new purchasing rules established by the Office of Management and Enterprise Solutions were not in the best interest of Oklahoma.

Byrd's audit — more than 200 pages long — reviewed $13 billion worth of expenditures of federal funds and questioned how more than $30 million of those funds were spent, including more than $276 million in Emergency Rental Assistant funds.

Those funds, sent to the state during FY 2021 and FY 2022, were earmarked to help Oklahomans with rental and utility assistance. Byrd said OMES contracted with the Communities Foundation of Oklahoma, a nonprofit entity, to receive $241 million of the funds and implement the program.

Among the audit's findings:

  • OMES advanced lump sum payments to CFO for its administrative costs to oversee the ERA grant without monitoring or requiring documentation for how much CFO actually expended for program and administrative costs.
  • Reports for the ERA program, which the OMES Director of Budget, Policy, and Gaming Compliance submitted to the U.S. Treasury, reflected 100% of the $241 million was expended. However, as of June 2022, since the start of the grant program, CFO withheld $10 million dollars in excessive management fees.
  • CFO also has $15 million in unexpended grant funds advanced by OMES.
  • CFO directed $6.5 Million to relocate refugees from Afghanistan into Oklahoma. This was not an allowable expense for this grant. The State of Oklahoma had other grants available for these types of services.

The audit also questioned CFO's spending, including:

  • $8,600,000 for excessive management fees.
  • $6,594,079 for Afghan refugee relocation.
  • $4,300,000 for subawards paid and no supporting documentation was obtained.
  • $834,521 for unallowable bonuses paid to subcontractors.
  • $41,391 paid to JGC without a contract.
  • $33,339 for inappropriate credit card expenditures including visits to entertainment venues, cooking class, succulent planting class, painting, and restaurants.

Federal funds provided for administrative costs are not intended for the nonprofit to make a profit, Byrd said. She said the CFO was only allowed to charge for actual administrative costs incurred during the execution of the grant.

"In last year’s Federal Single Audit, our office alerted the State about the excessive management fees from CFO and we recommended OMES take action. Our recommendations were ignored," Byrd said in a media statement. "Compounding this error, in an email to CFO, the OMES Director of Budget, Policy and Gaming Compliance gave incorrect guidance regarding the retention of administrative fees and seemed to give permission to CFO to keep the unused grant funds.”

On Thursday, Treat said Senate leaders were concerned by the findings in the audit. "It all deals with central purchasing at the core of the problem," Treat said. "That audit ... it causes me grave concerns."

Treat said he and other Senate leaders would continue to review the audit's findings before deciding on what action to take. The Second Session of the 59th Oklahoma Legislature ends at 5 p.m. May 31.
