Benediction

At last, BENEDICTION return to the fold with a crushing new album and an equally impressive line up.

When vocalist of over 20 years Dave Hunt announced last summer that he needed time away from the band to finish his PhD, the lads decided not to sit back and wait. With Dave’s blessing, they decided to push on without him. The band were to make only one phone call.

Since they announced the reappointment of Ingram , Vocalist on some of BENEDICTION ’s classic early releases such as ‘The Grand Leveller’ , ‘Grind Bastard’ and the groundbreaking opus that is ‘Transcend the Rubicon’ , often classed as one of the most influential as important death metal releases to date, attention on this cult band has gone ballistic. “We’re not making a comeback here” says Daz Brookes (original member and mainstay along with fellow guitar player Peter Rew) “but it really feels that way with this resurgence of interest and the clamor for interviews”.

Formed in 1989, and after many years doing the rounds under other names, BENEDICTION , as we know it, was formed and the band was quickly picked up by German underground Metal label Nuclear Blast Records, a partnership that lasts to this day.

BENEDICTION have since gone on to release many acclaimed albums and are now recognized as one of the originals in the death metal scene. They do however continually strive to deliver the goods and are still to this day thoroughly enthused by what they do as you clearly see when they are together, especially up on stage.

The band have constantly toured the world, playing some huge shows with many of the biggest bands in the metal world as well as embarking on numerous tours of their own. Taking with them their no nonsense, energy packed performance, BENEDICTION travel to anywhere and everywhere they can possibly go, often playing shows in places other wouldn’t dare, much to the delight of their loyal and still ever growing number of fans across the globe.

With over 30 years in this business and a genre that not only refuses to die but is benefitting from a new lease of life, BENEDICTION are back with arguably their best release to date and will no doubt secure their well earned seat at the top table once more.

All the raw power you expect from this colossal metal machine is on show. Crushing guitars from messers Rew and Brookes , vocals from Dave that sound even more powerful than back in the day, all backed up by a solid platform of concrete bass lines from Daniel Bate and a monster behind the kit in Gio Durst , surely soon to be recognized as one of the best drummers in this league.

Production was handled by Scott Atkins at Grindstone studio in England.

The new release “Scriptures” has that typical BENEDICTION Death Metal core, fused with the punk rock anger and attitude, the heavy Metal powertrain riffing that’s become a staple for the band, aggressive monster vocal delivering meaningful lyrics to entice you in, and that groove that only BENEDICTION seem to possess that sets them out amongst the others in their field and has become a trademark of their material over the years. As usual, tracks vary from slow and heavy to fast and intense, from shorter, in your face numbers to epic masterpieces. BENEDICTION don’t follow blueprints when it comes to the parameters of writing these great tunes but you will be in no doubt who you are listening to. It is clearly and intentionally BENEDICTION . That will never change.

The artwork for this release is outstanding and very much typically BENEDICTION . Created by Birmingham artist Wolven Claws Artist, it is a throwback to the iconic early album covers the band used way back then. With vivid colors and that ‘old school’ feel, it is definitely a BENEDICTION album cover. An absolute must for collectors of vinyl or as an eye-catching poster.

All in all this album is the complete package. A solid slab of early death metal, with a modern edge to it, right up to date and there to challenge the best that’s out there today. A powerhouse release from a band that’s been there from the very beginning.

BENEDICTION are BACK! And they are better than EVER! I’m sure you will agree!

With sales of their albums in the hundreds of thousands and having played just about everywhere in the world BENEDICTION are still as popular today as they have ever been. They are proud to have been around since the start of what became the "Death Metal" scene and can still give one of the best energetic live shows around today. Originally formed back in February 1989 around the line-up of PAUL ADAMS (bass),IAN TREACY (drums), DARREN BROOKES & PETER REW (guitars) and MARK (BARNEY) GREENWAY (vox), Birmingham based BENEDICTION drew the attention of Nuclear Blast records with their first demo"THE DREAMS YOU DREAD". Their first album "SUBCONSCIOUS TERROR" (info | shop) was released in 1990, this was followed by the departure of BARNEY who went on to be the vocalist for NAPALM DEATH. He was replaced by DAVE INGRAM and the band went out on tour to promote the well received debut album throughout Europe. 1991 saw the release of "THE GRAND LEVELLER" (info | shop) which gained international acclaim throughout the death metal market, they toured on this release with BOLT THROWER, NOCTURNUS, MASSACRA and DISMEMBER. Most of this year was spent touring and the reaction to BENEDICTION live was outstanding. After the last tour PAUL ADAMS departed, fed up with the band's non stop touring schedules. This was a bit of a kick in the teeth as they were about to go into the studio to record their next release, the "DARK IS THE SEASON" (info) E.P.. DARREN stepped in on the recording of the bass for this session, which included a punishing cover of the ANVIL classic "FORGED IN FIRE". The band went back out on tour with BOLT THROWER again and ASPHYX. The reputation of BENEDICTION live was bringing in ever larger crowds and most of their shows were sold out. Upon their return the needed to find a permanent replacement for PAUL on bass (they used a temporary bassist for the last tour). The man for the job was FRANK HEALY who was at the time in CEREBRAL FIX but fitted in so well with the rest of the band that he joined full time in 1992 just as they flew out to Israel to play 2 sold out shows. In 1993 they released "TRANSCEND THE RUBICON" (info | shop) which was given top marks worldwide upon its release. This album kick started the "WORLD VIOLATION" tour with ATHEIST and CEMETARY as guests. This tour was their biggest yet and took in Europe, the USA,and Canada. At the end of this tour IAN TREACY left the band due to the famous "musical and personal differences". They had collected and recorded some good quality live shows over the last few tours plus the had a few new tunes ready for recording. A new drummer was found, PAUL BROOKES who recorded the two new tracks, this became "THE GROTESQUE/ASHEN EPITAPH" (info) E.P. The band went back into Europe and then onto the USA with BOLT THROWER. After this tour PAUL departed and another new drummer had to be found, they were getting through as many drummers as SPINAL TAP !!! They found one by the name of NEIL HUTTON, an 18 year old drumming genius, and they went back into the studio and came out with "THE DREAMS YOU DREAD" (info | shop). The band then went out on the road again headlining the NUCLEAR BLAST FESTIVALS, which saw them selling out every date on these shows. They spent nearly 2 years solidly touring. At this time they formed a close relationship with the band DEATH. They'd toured with them once and when CHUCK SHULDINER was asked who he'd like out with DEATH he said he could think of no better band to tour with than BENEDICTION and that was the only band he'd have out with him! Another tour over, another album to do! This was "GRIND BASTARD" (info | shop), a brutal slab of death metal which yet again was well received worldwide, another tour followed which saw them playing most the territories of the former eastern block countries. After this tour DAVE INGRAM called it a day, he eventually became BOLT THROWER's vocalist for a while until KARL WILLETTS returned and the "proper" BOLT THROWER returned! The new vocalist was DAVE HUNT who more than delivered the goods, he was asked to learn the lyrics and sort his passport out one week before going on a major European tour!!! Piece of piss! Studio time again! DAVE'S first release with the band, "ORGANISED CHAOS" (info | shop). On this release the band went out on the road with IMMORTAL, followed by yet another tour with BOLT THROWER! These 2 bands have a bond and an honesty that has stayed strong throughout their respective careers, "if it ain't broke don't try and fix it!" These 2 will tour again together. They took on a shit load of festivals, including the legendary GODS OF METAL festival in Milan which saw them sharing the bill with MOTORHEAD, W.A.S.P, MEGADETH and JUDAS PRIEST. NEIL left to join STAMPIN' GROUND so another drummer was needed !!! NICK BARKER the drumming genius got behind the kit but got the chance to go out drumming for TESTAMENT so with the bands blessing went out with them.a few gigs turned into a lot of gigs and benediction needed to get started on the new album. NEIL HUTTON came in to help out and eventually rejoined the band ! The new album "KILLING MUSIC" (info | shop) was out August (2008). Still raw Death Metal, but this time the Punk´n´Crust influences are definitely more dominant than ever – also resulting in two cover songs of the legends BROKEN BONES and AMEBIX. For these songs, BENEDICTION invited several guests: Jock (GBH), Karl Willets (BOLT THROWER), Kelly Shaefer (ATHEIST), Billy Gould (ex-FAITH NO MORE), The Fog (FROST), Markus Staiger (NUCLEAR BLAST owner) and Thorsten Zahn (METAL HAMMER Germany). "Killing Music" was produced by ANAAL NATHRAKH mastermind Mike Kenney and sounds raw, dark and pure. The band was fed up by all the "polished" productions from the last years. Expect nothing less than a dirty bastard of punching Death Metal, crusting punk and in your face songwriting! If an album is worth seven years of wait, then it´s definitely "Killing Music"!

Benediction – Scriptures (Album Review)

benediction band tour

Returning to the olden creeds.

Perhaps best known for its pioneering work in the grindcore field, the British extreme metal scene nevertheless fielded a small yet highly potent death metal scene. Discounting the parallel road that Napalm Death would naturally run with said sub-genre during the early 90s, there was a curious trifecta that emerged by 1990, with the slightly doom-tinged work of Bolt Thrower being the most auspicious, while the early entries of Telford-born Cancer offered a solid English response to the pioneering death/thrash that was raging out of Brazil courtesy of Sepultura. Often lost in the mix yet equally as consequential was the Birmingham quintet Benediction, whom often paralleled the colossal character of Bolt Thrower , but leaned a bit more towards the classic sound of Florida and Sweden, with the grooving gloom of Obituary and the brutality of Grave being the more obvious points of comparison.

In contrast to their pioneering counterparts, this outfit never totally folded their flesh-skin tent for any period of time, though the past decade or so has seen a noticeable lack of studio output. With their longtime vocalist and Anaal Nathrakh front man Dave Hunt now occupied with his studies and his other aforementioned project, to speak nothing for the recent craze in death metal circles for a return to the old ways, the time was ripe for a bold step into the past, which commenced with the return of their classic era vocalist Dave Ingram . Having vacated the fold to join their similarly styled compatriots Bolt Thrower , his was the voice that breathed that vintage old school magic into this band’s seminal offerings, with “The Grand Leveller” and “Transcend The Rubicon” being the most fondly remembered. It is to that same rugged, early 90s approach of reigning auditory horror upon the masses that their comeback LP “Scriptures” takes its decrepit cues.

As with a number of return-to-form efforts by iconic bands from both sides of the Atlantic, Benediction explores the past while also making some key revisions to keep things interesting. The usual assortment of riff-happy, quasi-thrashing offerings that recall the primordial character of Death ’s “ Leprosy” and Dismember ’s “Like An Everflowing Stream” are naturally heavily present, but also accompanied by some groovier and moderate paced numbers that hint at the more recent exploits of Entombed. Likewise, the presentation is a bit on the stripped down side, perhaps entertaining a bit of a Jungle Rot character, particularly on fast yet simplified pummel sessions like “Tear Of These Wings” and “Stormcrow” . One can’t help but also notice the forbidding, haunting riff set after the mode of “The IVth Crusade” that kicks off “Progenitors Of A New Paradigm” , which ushers in an epic festival of rage that is a bit more kinetic and in line with the old Florida sound.

benediction band tour

“Scriptures” Album Artwork

Where this harrowing ride into the fiery abyss tends to shine is on the more thrashing offerings, though it proves a very consistent display of raw energy even when lunging at a grave tempo. Busy crushers like the opening kill fest “Iterations Of I” , along with shorter and more concise soul shredders like “Rabid Carnality” and “Embrace The Kill” hit with the same intensity as a typical Cannibal Corpse bludgeoning, but reach back a bit further to that somewhat more stylized and theatrical brand of death metal that was prevalent in the late 80s. The technical skill on display in the guitar work is particularly enthralling, as each of these offerings contain a litany of contrasting segments and some lead gymnastics comparable to Chuck Schuldiner and Rick Rozz ’s early shred sessions. Yet even more forbidding is the deep, dank growl of Ingram ’s vocal work, which loses none of the youthful vigor that it originally displayed back in 1993.

Those whom like their death metal right out of the flaming pit, with all of the peripheral gimmicks and sampled horror movie bits mercifully absent, this is made to order. It’s a solid rendition of a style that has been on a popular upswing of late after a period of stagnation in the later 90s with the rise of its technical and more brutal offshoots, but it comes off as a bit more hi-fi and nasty than a lot of the younger revivalists that seem keen on trying to perfectly recreate the old 1991 sound. Per the band’s own testimony in recent press releases, this isn’t necessarily intended as a comeback album, but it feels like one all the same given the perfect chemistry between this band and a singer that has been out of the fold for over 20 years. Whether one misses the good old days when this band was raising the ire of parents, teachers and even Mayhem ’s Euronymous (for different reasons, naturally), or one is just anxious for another intense auditory assault, the “Scriptures” await.

Benediction – Scriptures (Review)

Benediction Scriptures

The number of influential death metal acts that have graced our ears over the decades is so fantastically huge that we could sit here all day and have a list several meters long with no end quite in sight yet. Benediction is just one of potentially hundreds of influential acts that we could name on that list, and they are certainly far from the least in just about every form. The history of this band is just as interesting as their discography with virtually every member that has ever been a part of Benediction coming together to create something else that has quality in absolute spades to show us they hold massive sway over multiple roads of metal rather than exclusively the death variety. Benediction has always had a respectable level of respect and fame amongst the community, but it’s been twelve years since the band’s last full-length record and with the return of the legendary vocalist that is Dave Ingram, what better time was there for this band’s inevitable return? In all fairness and honesty, if you’re going to dive into what Benediction has created here looking for a completely new sound or even a mild reinventing of what they’ve been before, you won’t find much if any of that within the twelve tracks of “Scriptures” . That being said, there’s no way you can sit there and tell me that Benediction has lost a single ounce of its massive potency over the years given how spectacular this record is right from the beginning all the way to its immensely visceral end that only furthers the trend of death metal greatness that this act has had going since day one. This is one of those prime records that is made to showoff the absolute glory of the properly done riff with each song boasting one massive offering after another, and it’s only through the masterful wielding of death metal that Benediction exceeds at doing so without issue or fault in sight that immediately culminates in “Scriptures” becoming one of the last great stops in 2020 for premium death metal. We’ve all seen works like this before, but there’s nothing quite like seeing it done by a larger than life act that more than knows what they’re doing with this being a next-level example. If the name of Benediction had somehow left the consciousness of the scene in the past decade, then this offering will put it right back into the minds of those who far too easily forget. By all means, it won’t leave my brain any time soon nor my neighbors’ should my speakers be working properly, and rest assured for they are. When this year started off, I was half-convinced that the only legendary name in death metal that we were going to see more of was going to be from the likes of Cannibal Corpse, but it’s here that Benediction has proven me wrong twelve times over in exemplary fashion. Everything about “Scriptures” is what any death metal fan could ever hope to expect from a band like this as the name speaks for itself and the album doing nothing but justice to the band’s already-immaculate reputation, and it’s going to be right at home amongst the other massive works that this band has pumped out over the decades. “Scriptures” releases on October 16th via Nuclear Blast Records! Music Column: New Horizons Band's spring concerts

JoAnn Koskey plays flute in the New Horizons Band. She previews their upcoming performances in May.

For the 50-plus members of the New Horizons Band, the first day of rehearsal each semester is "like a box of chocolates," to quote Forrest Gump.

We never know what types of music we're going to get.

Our director Kevin Niese is a graduate associate at the UI pursuing his PhD in Music Education with an emphasis in conducting. He selects our music based on such factors as providing a challenge to the band, choosing something that will appeal to musicians and audience alike, and ensuring variety for a well-rounded program.

One such piece is “Overture for Winds” by Charles Carter. It requires musicians to incorporate varying dynamics, articulation and tempos into our playing. The audience is rewarded with an experience described as a “roller coaster ride of changes, shifting tempos, yet seamlessly regaining strength and driving toward a brilliant close.”

“Gabriel's Oboe” by Ennio Morricone is the haunting musical theme from the movie "The Mission." Our performance features a solo oboist, Amelia Johnson, an undergraduate studying oboe performance at the UI and one of our student directors for the semester.

Amelia leads the band in “Chasing Sunlight” by Cait Nishimura. This piece strives to capture the sense of traveling toward the setting sun, in an attempt to catch the remaining rays of light as dusk falls.

“Benediction” was originally a brass choir piece, but John Stevens wrote a version for the full band featuring fluid melodies in a chorale-like arrangement. For this number, the band is led by student director Ryan Carter, a UI undergrad studying trombone performance.

Gustav Holst’s “Second Suite in F” was written as part of an effort among composers to create music specifically for bands rather than adaptations of symphony works. The composition is a four-part celebration of popular English folk tunes.

“Conquering Spirit” by Ed Kiefer is an inspiring musical piece that begins with fanfare and flourishes in the brass section. Following distinctive airs played by the woodwinds, it transitions to a rhythmic melody featuring alternating meters.

“Rough Riders March” was written by Iowa’s own Karl King as a tribute to the actions of Theodore Roosevelt and the First Volunteer Cavalry Regiment during the Spanish-American War. This composition has been described as a “galop march” in reference to its fast pace.

The New Horizons Band will present this program at two concerts in May. The first is at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 2 in the Iowa City Senior Center’s Assembly Room. The second is at 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 7 in Voxman Concert Hall at the UI School of Music.

Several members of the band have formed smaller ensembles to focus on their instruments’ unique characteristics and sound.

These ensembles include flute, clarinet and brass. A separate concert for these groups will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 30 at the Senior Center.

We hope that attending our concerts will inspire other “chronologically-challenged” musicians to join us at a future rehearsal. This (and much more) information is on our website at iowacitynhb.org.

Dickey Betts, Allman Brothers Band co-founder and legendary guitarist, dies at 80

Updated on: April 18, 2024 / 8:38 PM EDT / AP

Guitar legend Dickey Betts, who co-founded the Allman Brothers Band and wrote their biggest hit, "Ramblin' Man," has died. He was 80.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer died at his home in Osprey, Florida, David Spero, Betts' manager of 20 years, confirmed. Betts had been battling cancer for more than a year and had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Spero said.

"He was surrounded by his whole family and he passed peacefully. They didn't think he was in any pain," Spero said by phone.

Betts shared lead guitar duties with Duane Allman in the original Allman Brothers Band to help give the group its distinctive sound and create a new genre — Southern rock. Acts ranging from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Kid Rock were influenced by the Allmans' music, which combined the blues, country, R&B and jazz with '60s rock.

DICKEY BETTS-DECESO

Founded in 1969, the Allmans were a pioneering jam band, trampling the traditional notion of three-minute pop songs by performing lengthy compositions in concert and on record. The band was also notable as a biracial group from the Deep South.

Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident in 1971, and founding member Berry Oakley was killed in a motorcycle crash a year later. That left Betts and Allman's younger brother Gregg as the band's leaders, but they frequently clashed, and substance abuse caused further dysfunction. The band broke up at least twice before reforming, and has had more than a dozen lineups.

The Allman Brothers Band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and earned a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 2012. Betts left the group for good in 2000, and also played solo and with his own band Great Southern, which included his son, guitarist Duane Betts.

Forrest Richard Betts was born Dec. 12, 1943, and was raised in the Bradenton, Florida, area, near the highway 41 he sang about in "Ramblin' Man." His family had lived in area since the mid-19th century.

Betts grew up listening to country, bluegrass and Western swing, and played the ukulele and banjo before focusing on the electric guitar because it impressed girls. At 16 he left home for his first road trip, joining the circus to play in a band.

He returned home, and with bassist Oakley joined a group that became the Jacksonville, Florida-based band Second Coming. One night in 1969 Betts and Oakley jammed with Duane Allman, already a successful session musician, and his younger brother, and together they formed the Allman Brothers Band.

The group moved to Macon, Georgia, and released a self-titled debut album in 1969. A year later came the album "Idlewild South," highlighted by Betts' instrumental composition "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," which soon became a concert staple.

The 1971 double album "At Fillmore East," now considered among the greatest live albums of the classic rock era, was the Allmans' commercial breakthrough and cemented their performing reputation by showcasing the unique guitar interplay between Allman and Betts. Their styles contrasted, with Allman playing bluesy slide guitar, while Betts' solos and singing tugged the band toward country. When layered in harmony, their playing was especially distinctive.

The group also had two drummers — "Jaimoe" Johanson, who is Black, and Butch Trucks.

Duane Allman died four days after "Fillmore" was certified as a gold record, but the band carried on and crowds continued to grow. The 1973 album "Brothers and Sisters" rose to No. 1 on the charts and featured "Ramblin' Man," with Betts singing the lead and bringing twang to the Top 40. The song reached No. 2 on the singles charts and was kept out of the No. 1 spot by "Half Breed" by Cher, who later married Gregg Allman.

The soaring sound of Betts' guitar on "Ramblin' Man" reverberated in neighborhood bars around the country for decades, and the song underscored his knack for melodic hooks. "Ramblin' Man" was the Allmans' only Top Ten hit, but Betts' catchy 7½-minute instrumental composition "Jessica," recorded in 1972, became an FM radio staple.

Betts also wrote or co-wrote some of the band's other best-loved songs, including "Blue Sky" and "Southbound." In later years the group remained a successful touring act with Betts and Warren Haynes on guitar. Gregg Allman and Butch Trucks died in 2017.

After leaving the Allmans for good, Betts continued to play with his own group and lived in the Bradenton area with his wife, Donna.

NEW YORK (AP) — Heart — the pioneering band that melds Nancy Wilson’s shredding guitar with her sister Ann’s powerhouse vocals — is hitting the road this spring and fall for a world tour that Nancy Wilson describes as “the full-on rocker size.”

“I’ve been strengthening. I’ve got my trainer,” she says. “You go one day at a time and you strengthen one workout session at a time. It’s a lot of work, but it’s the only job I know how to do.”

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers who gave us classic tracks like “Magic Man,” “Crazy on You” and “Alone” will be playing all the hits, some tracks from of their solo albums — like Ann Wilson’s “Miss One and Only” and Nancy Wilson’s “Love Mistake” — and a new song called “Roll the Dice.”

“I like to say we have really good problems because the problem we have is to choose between a bunch of different, really cool songs that people love already,” says Nancy Wilson.

Like “Barracuda,” a sonic burst which first appeared on the band’s second album, “Little Queen” and is one of the band’s most memorable songs.

“You can’t mess with ‘Barracuda.’ It’s just the way it is. It is great. You get on the horse and you ride. It’s a galloping steed of a ride to go on. And for everybody, including the band.”

The tour kicks off Saturday at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina, and will hit cities including Atlanta, Boston, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Detroit, as well as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado. International dates include stops in London, Oslo, Berlin, Stockholm, Montreal and Glasgow.

The band’s Royal Flush Tour will have Cheap Trick as the opening act for many stops, but Def Leppard and Journey will join for three stadium dates in Cleveland, Toronto and Boston this summer.

Ann and Nancy Wilson will be filled out by Ryan Wariner (lead and rhythm guitar), Ryan Waters (guitars), Paul Moak (guitars, keyboards and backing vocals), Tony Lucido (bass and backing vocals) and Sean T. Lane (drums).

The tour is the first in several years for Heart, which was rocked by a body blow in 2016 when Ann Wilson’s husband was arrested for assaulting Nancy’s 16-year-old twin sons. Nancy Wilson says that’s all in the past.

“We can take any kind of turbulence, me and Ann, and we’ve always been OK together,” she says. “We’re still steering the ship and happy to do it together. So we’re tight.”

The new tour will take them to Canada, which was warm to the band when they were starting out as what Nancy Wilson calls “a couple of chicks from Seattle.” She recalls Vancouver embracing Heart, and touring in one van across Canada in the dead of winter on two lane highways.

The Wilson sisters broke rock’s glass ceiling in the ‘70s and Nancy Wilson says they only had male influences to look to, like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Moody Blues.

Now she says she looks out and loves seeing generations of female rockers. “You have boygenius and you have Billie Eilish and you have Olivia Rodrigo and so many amazing women — Maggie Rogers and Sheryl Crow, who calls us her big influence. And then Billie Eilish might have Sheryl Crow as her influence. So it’s a really nice legacy to pass along. I like to say we’re the OG — the original gangsters — of women and rock.”

Heart has made it into the Rock Hall, won Grammys, sold millions of albums and rocked hundreds of thousands of fans but Nancy Wilson has one place she’d still like to shine.

Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of their debut album, “Dreamboat Annie,” which was the same year that “Saturday Night Live” started. “So we’re actually kind of putting it out there — Heart never played on ‘Saturday Night Live.’ But what about the 50th birthday party with Heart?”

Trivium and Bullet For My Valentine announce extra Ascendancy / The Poison 2025 tour dates, plus stellar support act

The metalcore heroes will be playing their classic albums in full to mark their 20th anniversaries

Trivium and Bullet For My Valentine performing live in 2023

Trivium and Bullet For My Valentine have announced additional dates on their Poisoned Ascendancy world tour.

The metalcore favourites announced the tour in February, which will see them coheadline to celebrate their 20th anniversaries of their respective breakthrough albums, Ascendancy and The Poison .

The records will each be performed live in full.

The bands also announced the UK dates simultaneously, which will start on January 26, 2025, in Cardiff, Wales, and conclude on February 1 in London.

Now, the pair have added a string of European shows to the tour.

The full list of dates and the new poster are available below.

It’s also been revealed that Swedish groove/death metal up-and-comers Orbit Culture will be the support act for the UK and Europe gigs.

Trivium and Bullet For My Valentine have stated previously that The Poisoned Ascendancy will be a world tour, implying that North and South American and Asian dates will be added to the run in due course.

Ascendancy was released on March 15, 2005, as Trivium’s debut on renowned label Roadrunner Records.

It only charted at 151 in the band’s native United States, but received critical acclaim and became a sleeper hit, especially in the UK following Trivium’s main-stage set at Download festival, Donington, that June.

Ascendancy has since been certified Gold in the UK.

The Poison came out on October 3, 2005, and was Bullet For My Valentine’s debut album.

It reached number 21 on the album charts in the band’s native UK and also received critical acclaim.

The Poison has since been certified Gold in the UK and in the United States, and certified Platinum in Germany.

When the first Poisoned Ascendancy dates were announced in February, Trivium singer/guitarist Matt Heafy commented: “Bullet For My Valentine’s The Poison and Trivium’s Ascendancy are two records whose influence can be heard to this day – in the DNA of modern metal.

“It’s incredible to think of the impact the albums had when they came out in 2005. They were both like bolts of lightning.

“Both bands grew up independently of each other in different countries and separately from any movement or scene but both shared a common love of melodic heavy metal at the core; and both had similar meteoric rises right out of the gate.”

Bullet For My Valentine frontman Matt Tuck also commented, saying: “I honestly can’t believe it's been 20 years since the release of The Poison and what an incredible 20 years it’s been.

“I feel so proud of what we've achieved as a band in the last two decades and it all started with that debut album.

“ The Poison is such an important part of our lives musically and personally and we know the massive impact it had on the metal world on a global level.

“This tour will be made even more special as our brothers in Trivium are also joining us on the road to celebrate and play in its entirety their stunning album Ascendancy .”

It’s that we captured how we all feel living in this particular part of the world, Long Island [and] New York.”

Continued Seinfeld: “He is like the companion that we have gone through our whole lives with. His music is our best friend for our whole life. I don’t even think he can understand how much his music means to us being from where we are.”

After getting cut short by two minutes when it initially aired on April 14 due to what CBS called a “network programming timing error,” the Piano Man’s concert special will air once again — disruption-free — today on the network starting at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT. But for Joel’s fans who don’t have access to a tradition cable package, they can still stream the 100th special online. Read on for our streaming guide.

Bruce Springsteen plays loose in hits-packed Syracuse concert (review, setlist, photos)

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band made up for lost time at Thursday night’s concert.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group played more than two dozen songs in a hits-packed performance at the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse. The show was originally scheduled for September and postponed when Springsteen was diagnosed with peptic ulcer disease .

The wait was even longer for some fans, as this was Springsteen’s first Central New York concert in more than a decade and his first time playing at the Syracuse University stadium with the E Street Band since 1985. He breathlessly played two hours and fifty minutes with virtually no pauses throughout the set. He sang the hits — including “Born to Run,” “Thunder Road,” “Dancing in the Dark,” “Hungry Heart” and “Glory Days” — but also sprinkled in a few more surprising songs like “Darlington County” (from his 1986 album “Born in the U.S.A.”) and chose “Night” (from “Born to Run”) over “Prove It All Night” (from “Darkness on the Edge of Town”).

He even played “Growin’ Up” for the first time on his tour after a young fan held up a sign requesting it. Most of the crowd grew up with Springsteen’s music over the past five decades, but he clearly appreciated parents who brought their little ones to the show. He hugged one kid who said he skipped school to attend the concert and traded a harmonica for a bag of Skittles with another youngster.

“I f---ing love you,” said one child, who was definitely too young to be using such language. But that’s rock and roll.

Stadium shows are often very rigid due to video and light synchronization requirements. Before his illness, some Springsteen fans complained last year that too many shows were following the same setlist. But at least eight songs were completely different from Monday’s MVP Arena concert in Albany and last week’s performance at Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut.

According to a setlist that was printed out before the show, Springsteen and the E Street Band kept the whole Syracuse show loose, sometimes swapping songs out spontaneously. He chose “My City of Ruins” over “Racing in the Street” and “Growin’ Up” replaced “Letter to You,” while tracks like “I’m On Fire” and “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)” were scrapped altogether.

I was most impressed how Springsteen could shout out song names from the edge of the pit and his famous backing band, 20 to 30 feet away from him, could immediately jump into them. It felt well choreographed and rehearsed, but you could tell they were still improvising at times. They just happen to be very, very good at their jobs.

They also happen to love the music, which is why fans want to see Springsteen over and over again. The people on stage are having just as good of a time as the people watching it, which makes the whole thing feel like a party.

E Street Band standouts like guitarist Steven Van Zandt, drummer Max Weinberg and multi-instrumentalist Nils Lofgren are constantly riffing with Springsteen on stage. Little Steven and saxophonist Jake Clemons, the nephew of the late, great Clarence Clemons , even danced with The Boss.

Some of that energy, as well as Springsteen’s enunciation ( or lack thereof ), gets lost in the echoes of the Dome during less popular songs like “Ghosts” and “Atlantic City.” But by the end of the first set, the 30,000 people in attendance sang to the roof of the stadium for gems like “Because the Night” (a cover of Patti Smith Group), “She’s the One,” “Wrecking Ball,” “The Rising,” “Badlands” and “Thunder Road.”

“My City of Ruins” was the most emotional song of the night. The final track from Springsteen’s post-9/11 album “The Rising” was originally written for Asbury Park, New Jersey, but has also been associated with the resilience of New York City and other cities that have faced hardships and loss.

Despite some fan expectations, Springsteen didn’t explicitly pay tribute to Onondaga County Sheriff’s Lt. Michael Hoosock and Syracuse Police Officer Michael Jensen , who were killed by a gunman in Salina this week. But his words during “My City of Ruins” still offered comfort to the Central New York community.

“Are we missing anybody? Yes, we are. And I know a lot of you out there (have someone) you wish could be here with you tonight,” Springsteen told the crowd. And then he said those people can “remain alive in our memories, within our hearts.”

Springsteen didn’t speak much between other songs, save for the occasional “Syracuse!” shouts. He let the music do the talking.

The show began at 7:49 p.m. and Springsteen didn’t leave the stage until a brief pause for the encore at 10. Yet Springsteen continued to defy his age — 74! — and blazed non-stop through “Born to Run,” “Glory Days,” “Dancing in the Dark” and “Tenth Avenue Freeze Out.”

Then he took the fun up another notch with an impromptu performance of “Twist and Shout” (a fan’s sign request) followed by a “Detroit Medley” highlighted by covers of “Devil in a Blue Dress” and “Good Golly Miss Molly.” The crowd’s enthusiasm earned those extra songs and they showed their gratitude by singing and dancing so much you could feel the metal benches rattle.

The night concluded around 10:40 p.m. with a solo acoustic performance of “I’ll See You in My Dreams” by Springsteen. And, unless I was dreaming, there was also one more F-bomb from someone who’s definitely old enough to say it.

“Thank you Syracuse! You’re a f---ing great audience,” Springsteen said.

Thanks, Boss. You’re pretty great, too.

Classic rock band’s former guitarist rushed to hospital just before concert

  • Cliff Pinckard, cleveland.com

PHOENIX, Arizona — former lead guitarist for Genesis is recovering after he had an adverse reaction to medication to treat bronchitis, forcing him to cancel a concert moments before it was to begin.

Steve Hackett wrote in a post on Facebook that he had a “last-minute adverse reaction” to the medication before Saturday’s show at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

“I’m so sorry for the scare,” Hackett writes. “I’d hoped to power through the Phoenix show but I had a bronchial infection and a last-minute adverse reaction to medication. Consequently, the medics took me to hospital.

“I am now recovering and glad to be feeling okay. I was very sad to miss the show and I will return to play in Phoenix as soon as possible. My thanks to you all for your understanding and support.”

A spokesperson tells the Los Angeles Times that Hackett intends to reschedule the Phoenix show.

On Tuesday, Hackett again posted on Facebook saying “Hello Mexico! All clear and hear I come!” He was scheduled to play Wednesday night in Guadalajara, Mexico, and Friday in Mexico City. USA Today reports the tour focuses on “Foxtrot,” an album he recorded with Genesis during the 1970s, and on “The Circus and the Nightwhale,” a solo album he released in February.

Hackett was with Genesis from 1971 to 1977 with vocalist Peter Gabriel, keyboardist Tony Banks, bassist Mike Rutherford and drummer Phil Collins, and played on six studio albums. Hackett left the band in October 1977, saying he “needed autonomy.”
