Amazing Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam 18 days

This tour definitely gives you more than what you expect. The guide Sam in Cambodia was knowledgeable, honest, and genuine. This tour checks the bucket list you may have from each country. We would recommend this trip.

21 days Thailand, Laos, Vietnam & Cambodia

Thank you for so much help before the tour and the wonderful staff you provided to make our trip something we will always cherish! I would love to give feedback on each of our guides but cannot remember their names (Suggestion: It would be helpful if that information was included on our itinerary or the guides provided a card with their names on it when we met them.) Some of them were outstanding with their English and did a wonderful job directing us through the sites. It would have been helpful on the first day/night to give more detailed instructions as there is so much going on that it is hard to take it all in. Example: We would need to check out of the hotel by 7am and take our luggage with us on the tour. It would also be nice to know what we are to do about breakfast as the first day our tour left at 7am but breakfast was not available until 7am. The staff at Grand Alpine would not accommodate us and told us we needed to speak to our tour guide (who, when I asked, told us that we would have a box waiting - which didn't happen.) The rest of the tour was wonderful and we felt very cared for. It was just that first day that was a bit of a challenge. We will always remember our time in SE Asia and smile:)

Essential Vietnam & Cambodia Tour

Excellent tour, great CEO, great activities. Good balance between guided tours, optional tours and free time.

11 Days Fantastic Vietnam & Thailand Tour

11 Days Fantastic Vietnam & Thailand

We enjoyed everything about our tour in Vietnam except the breakfast and stay at the Titan Hotel. The smell in the room was overbearing for 2 nights, we even purchased room spray but that didn't help. The breakfast selection was nothing to rave about. we decided to eat elsewhere in the am. Bau and Nguyen were excellent guides. When we arrived in Thailand, there were some issues with the transportation to the hotel. I would've been nice for Hoi An to let us know which company in they used for the tours, we didn't know until we landed and had to search the airport and make several calls. The guide, Honey Bee in Bangkok, spent more time on her phone than actually interacting with us. She was nice but nothing special. The guide in Chiang Mai, Indie, was excellent. She was flexible with us very informative. We would definitely recommend this tour to friends.

Endless Beauty of Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand - 19 Days Tour

Endless Beauty of Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand - 19 Days

The tour was fantastic! Our tour guides were very knowledgeable and were very attentive to our needs. Every tour guide was on time and all of our connections worked our flawlessly. Danny from Legends was always available to answer questions and ensured a well planned trip. My only suggestion would be for the Legend group to make it clear about the visa process for Cambodia in that travellers should not try to arrange to get it ahead of time and to ensure they have USD to pay for it at the border.

Spirits Of Vietnam - Cambodia - Thailand In 16 Days

We had an amazing time. We would recommend this tour to others. One recommendation would be to reduce the additional flight from Cambodia to Phuket to 1 flight not 2, to increase the amount of time in Phuket and spend less time in airports.

Epic Asia Tour

I have just finished the Vietnam leg of my epic Asia tour, with our group pester Julia. What an incredible experience. I learned so much about Vietnam and got to explore some amazing places. Despite rain Julia made the trip amazing, with her positive and bubbly personality. I would have no hesitation in booking another intro trip, especially if I had Julia as my group leader again.

'The Curious' Vietnam, Cambodia & Thailand Suggested Itinerary

Buckle up: this incredible holiday has you hopping around Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand on an unforgettable journey.

Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Bangkok vie to be your favourite city on this wide-ranging itinerary, with urban adventures blended with a cruise through Halong Bay, temple discoveries in Siem Reap, and downtime on the beach in Phuket.

Recommended itinerary

Your incredible adventure begins in Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital, where you’ll be swept up in the melee of busy streets, fragrant with spices, riddled with scooters, and overlooked by a mix of architecture from occupations past. The Mövenpick Hotel will prove a soothing sanctuary to return to after you’ve spent a day with a private guide getting to know the city at your own pace and tailored to your interests.

Ho Chi Minh City

You’ll be collected from Hanoi for the four-hour drive to Halong Bay to board the elegant Au Co ship, where you’ll spend a night onboard. You’ll disembark to cycle to a village on Cat Ba Island and have the chance to swim in the lagoon around Viet Hai pier. Come morning, join guests on the deck for t'ai chi and a spot of kayaking before heading to Hanoi airport for your onward flight to Hoi An.

Your next three days are spent in a hotel dedicated to relaxation and wellbeing. And while the Almanity Hoi An Resort & Spa has plenty to keep you lingering, you won’t miss out on the sights of Hoi An. You’ll join a private guided walking tour to get your bearings, visit Cau Temple, and take a boat trip along the Thu Bon River.

Hoi An

Ho Chi Minh City

A flight from Hoi An brings you to the vivacious Ho Chi Minh City to spend three memorable nights in the city once known as Saigon. You’ll explore the city with a private guide on a tour tailored to you, whether you want to go places the locals love or see the main sights. A second day has you boarding a boat on the magnificent Mekong Delta to watch local life unfold on the riverbanks.

Mekong Delta

You’ll fly to Siem Reap, checking into Tara Angkor for two nights — ideally placed for temple discoveries. Spend a full day exploring the atmospheric highlights, from the South Gate of Angkor Thom to the Terrace of Elephants and Ta Prohm, where trees grow from the walls.

Ta Prohm

Things switch gears again when you fly to Bangkok, ready for three nights in this sensory city. You’ll explore all the main highlights one day and take a trip to the colourful and fragrant floating market the next. The Sindhorn Midtown Hotel will prove the perfect central base for your explorations.

Wat Arun Temple, Bangkok

Your adventure finishes with some well-deserved downtime on the beach in Phuket, where there are four nights to relax and reflect on your incredible holiday. But the excitement isn’t over — you’ll take a scenic cruise around the Phi Phi Islands to understand why this area of Thailand is so sought-after. The rest of the time is yours to relax in the jungle surroundings and golden sands of Marina Phuket Resort. Heavenly.

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration.

Mysteries are unearthed at the Angkor temples and in old city quarters while spirituality is found in Thai monasteries and local connections. Journeys range from rice paddies to thick jungle, cruising through limestone karst, and drifting through a city. Welcome to the grand highlights of Southeast Asia, a two-week tour of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. Fly between the iconic destinations to explore with passionate local guides in one of the world’s great travel regions.

Customizable Itinerary

Hanoi – first impressions of vietnam.

Hanoi is an intoxicating city, and it is quick to pull you into its rhythm. Food sizzles on small street barbecues alongside the faded grandeur of a colonial townhouse. Traders sell conical-shaped hats down narrow back streets as pagodas creep up above the mazy Old Quarter, moss covering their frames. Arrive in Vietnam and head out with a guide to wrap your senses around all of the new impressions. With 24 hours in the city, you can take it slowly in the Old Quarter, allowing some of the sounds and smells to sink in. You will be greeted at the airport and have a hotel within the Old Quarter, and your guide will then tailor a walking route based on your energy levels.

What's Included:

Halong Bay – More of the Old Quarter and a Seaplane to the Karst

Begin the day with more of the Old Quarter to sip Vietnamese coffee at a small cafe, wander past the bowls of bubbling pho, traverse the narrow lanes and end up at Hoan Kiem Lake, where the Temple of the Jade Mountain provides a few moments of calm.

After lunch, you will fly to Halong Bay on a seaplane. The journey reduces travel time from three to four hours down to just 30 minutes, plus the views are incredible. City backstreets extend beneath the wingtips before you cross endlessly green rice paddies towards the coast. Sweep over some of the limestone karst and land at a small harbor, where you transfer straight onto a luxurious junk. Junk is the colloquial term for traditional wooden boats that ply Halong Bay. Yours has just four cabins, and soon you are deep into the worlds seven wonders of nature.

Halong Bay – A Relaxed Day Cruising the World Wonder

Trees rise at improbable angles and surge from deserted island cliffs. Islets stand like a mystery, and you pass hundreds of them. Some of the karsts are just a slither of vertical cliff and forest, others hide strange caves, and still, more are dotted with natural tunnels and golden beaches. Relax into the fairytale of this landscape as you sail on the wind, past grottos, jagged peaks, and parts of Halong Bay missed by day trips. You can take a rowing boat or kayak to get closer to some of the islets. You can also indulge on board with spa services and live cooking demonstrations at dusk.

Hoi An – The Elegance of Centuries Past

Wake up to the mystery of your surroundings as the early-morning mist is common here, and as it clears, you will be greeted by limestone karst islets in the heart of Halong Bay. Spend the morning cruising with lunch on board before you disembark and fly back to Hanoi on the seaplane. Touch down and switch planes, traveling south to Hoi An, where the sense of tranquility continues in Vietnam’s most enchanting old city, wonderfully preserved and so easy on the eye. The guide takes you on an orientation tour, which leads to an authentic Vietnamese meal in a place known mostly just to locals.

Hoi An – Markets, Energy and a Cauldron of History

Sit at an old French cafe and watch the streets as locals walk past in ao dai's traditional dress. A Japanese bridge can be seen in the distance while Chinese temples peek above the Old Quarter. Locals bicycle past, traders carry their wares on bamboo poles and the smells of coffee and lemongrass mingle. Hoi An is a slow city, so take it easy this morning before the guide takes you into the sights, the highlight being the juxtaposition of styles that includes Chinese, Japanese, French, Vietnamese, and a few little surprises. This is also a great city to meet the locals, and you spend half the afternoon in a kitchen, learning some classic Hoi An recipes. Discuss past and future with the chef, and then eat on a terrace with views into the Old Quarter lanes.

Ho Chi Minh City – Into the Cu Chi Tunnels

It will be worth getting up early to watch the Old Quarter one final time, the city coming to life, and the traders going about their day. Fly to Ho Chi Minh City after breakfast and head straight to the Cu Chi Tunnels, a maze built under the jungle north of the city. Crawl through the secretive opening, and an entire city expands, with kitchens, schools, hospitals, places to sleep, and more. These tunnels provide a good opportunity to witness other elements of the war and hear the Vietnamese stories. Then the heart of the old Saigon provides an atmospheric place to spend the evening. Like each day, your hotel is centrally located within walking distance of cafes, restaurants, and most of the major sights. This is a great city for foodies and the guide will provide suggestions for today and tomorrow, whether local, international, traditional, and contemporary.

Ho Chi Minh City – The Old and New of What Was Saigon

In the Old Quarter, you can live the history like so much of this city is in a delicate and highly evocative state of ruin. It all still stands, but you can sense the age at structures like the neoclassical Central Post Office, the Opera House, the old US Consulate building, and the Romanesque Notre Dame. Around the French colonial buildings, you will find an atmosphere of bustling, everyday Vietnam with locals going to market and traders plying the streets. Follow these locals to Ben Thang Market and sink your senses into the trading space, from the aromatic spice stalls to the chatter of locals slurping their pho. A few more steps and you will have left Saigon to be in Ho Chi Minh City, the modern economic hub, full of sleek business buildings and a sense of future.

Siem Reap – An Afternoon Around the Ancient City

Fly to Siem Reap this morning, and after some time relaxing at the hotel, you will go in search of the ancient Khmer kingdom. It will not hard to find, and soon you will be surrounded by temples and pagodas. Some of them have been restored, but many lay in their natural state slowly eroded and overtaken by jungle. Banteay Srei provides a great introduction to Angkorian art, a temple of dramatic carvings cut from pink stone. Ta Phrom is a classic experience, tree roots surging through the ruins, wrapping the temple in a stoic embrace. After these two famous temples, you travel past Angkor in a Khmer boat, canapes and cocktails served on the boat as the ancient city of Angkor Thom provide a backdrop.

Siem Reap – The Famous Jungle-Shrouded Temples of Angkor

Wake to continue with more Angkor temples today as you begin with a couple of lesser-known sights where the jungle is working its magic, and the ruins are slowly losing their way to trees. Then move to Angkor Wat, the grandest temple of them all, where entire walls depict mythological stories, and there is a spirituality to every gallery. Traveling into Angkor Thom, you can explore a ruined city that was once home to a million people, a fortified complex of stunning bas-reliefs, mysterious temples, smiling stone faces, and many architectural masterpieces. You can never see all of Angkor on a single trip. With three days, you will come to understand this vast complex and enjoy three spectacular sunsets over the temples.

Siem Reap – More Beautiful Temples and More of Cambodia

There are still more temples this morning, these a little different as humans have carved stories into nature beneath the gushing waterfalls. You may prefer to focus your time in Tonle Sap. Houses stand on stilts here, rising above the lake. Stop for lunch in a waterside village and spend the afternoon discovering more of Cambodia, perhaps visiting a floating community or one of the artisanal villages outside of Siem Reap, and then get back to Angkor for a final golden sunset.

Chiang Mai – Thai Culture and Jungle Life

Fly north to Chiang Mai and spend the day in rural northern Thailand. Rice paddies stretch out and terraces of color for getting your feet muddy. Join a farmer and walk through the plantation, getting a glimpse into life in this rural corner of the world. The jungle is only a few miles away, and you step into a world of gibbons and monkeys, a glimpse of what remains in this part of the world. Move back to Chiang Mai to glimpse the spiritual world, spending sunset at Wat Doi Suthep, where Thailand’s most sacred temple is perched high above the city. Spin the prayer wheels, admire the Buddha relic, and join the monks in marveling at sunset over Chiang Mai.

Chiang Mai – Meeting Monks and Exploring North Thailand Culture

Chiang Mai’s fortified old quarter is dotted with stupas and temples, remnants to a time when the city was completely cut off. One of these temples is Wat Suan Dok, holding the ashes of Chiang Mai’s royal family and some of Buddha’s relics. You can feel its importance the moment you enter. Two monks greet you, introducing you to the sanctified space. They speak freely, teaching you about life in a Thai temple and Buddhism in the country. It’s an intimate experience that might help you explain the calm that is felt in Thailand. The afternoon is left free, but you might want to head back after dusk, a tuk-tuk tour showing you the old city in its illuminated state.

Bangkok – Cruising the Chao Phraya

Bangkok is your final destination and the world’s most visited city. Yes, it’s busy and crowded in places, but such a big city has its charms and secrets, especially once you leave its center. Meet your guide and transfer to a hotel on the Chao Phraya River, where the swimming pool terrace is several floors above the street noise. Then travel out to narrow canals, essentially the backstreets of local Bangkok, where life continues as it always has done. On a wooden craft, you cruise unobtrusively through local neighborhoods, before joining the Chao Phraya and traveling back into the heart of Bangkok. This is another wonderful city for foodies, and the choice of restaurants is one of its highlights.

Bangkok – Highlights of Bangkok and Its Surroundings

This is a relaxed day, giving plenty of time for you to take it easy before the journey home. A lot has happened over the last two weeks, and you can start to reflect on your experiences, piecing together what you have encountered across three very different countries. Your guide will tailor a program to your interests, so you can also visit some of the famous sights such as Wat Pho, the Grand Palace, and a Buddha that is over 150 feet long. Also around Bangkok, you will find famous floating markets, night markets, and all the street food you can imagine. Today is about what you want to see and do before leaving Southeast Asia tomorrow.

Bangkok – Departure

After breakfast, you take a last glance at Bangkok before transferring to the airport for your outbound flight.

Pho is perhaps the most iconic dish from Hanoi, with broth simmered for hours with spices like star anise and cinnamon, then served with rice noodles, meat, fresh herbs, and lime. Bun Cha, consisting of grilled pork meatballs served with a tangy fish sauce, rice noodles, and a basket of fresh herbs, is another must-try dish. Banh Mi, a French-Vietnamese fusion sandwich, is a popular street food in Hanoi, made with a crusty baguette filled with various meats, pickled vegetables, and herbs. Being so close to the ocean, fresh seafood abounds as well, with fresh oysters, squid, and saltwater fish widely available.

2. Classic 2-week Itinerary for Thailand and Vietnam

On a 2-week itinerary, it is suitable to arrange the top three cities (Hanoi, Hoi An, and Ho Chi Minh) with their surrounding areas in Vietnam, and one city (Bangkok or Chiang Mai) plus one island in Thailand.

Hanoi, with its ancient charm, is complemented by the captivating Halong Bay nearby. In central Hoi An, lantern-lit streets beckon, while bustling Ho Chi Minh City in the south contrasts with the serene beauty of the Mekong Delta.

The remaining time in Thailand is enough for Bangkok and one island: Phuket or Koh Samui. If you are looking for a variety of activities and cost-effectiveness, then go to Phuket. If you prefer a quiet and luxurious environment, then Koh Samui would be better for you.

Here is the itinerary, starting in Vietnam's Hanoi and ending in Thailand's Phuket:

  • Days 1–2: Hanoi sightseeing at iconic landmarks, plus a rickshaw ride to see local life and explore the city
  • Days 3–4: A Halong Bay cruise with interesting activities on board and water activities on the bay
  • Days 5–6: Hoi An exploration with a basket-boat ride experience, an evening food tour, a Vietnamese fishing experience, and a night boat trip surrounded by colorful lanterns
  • Days 6–7: Discover Ho Chi Minh City by visiting its historic landmarks and Vietnam War relics.
  • Days 8–9: A Mekong Delta tour, visiting a local village, taking a sampan ride on canals, and seeing the most bustling floating market
  • Day 10: Bangkok sightseeing with temples, the Grand Palace, and a long-tail boat ride
  • Days 11–14: Phuket or Koh Samui beach time

3. 3 Weeks in Thailand and Vietnam

Based on the 2-week itinerary above, a 3-week itinerary would allow time to see the sights in some off-the-beaten-path cities in Vietnam like Sapa and Hue .

Sapa is a town in the mountains of northern Vietnam. If you are interested in Vietnam's countryside life and enjoy trekking, you will enjoy it. Walk among the locals' fields and rice paddies, meet the local ethnic people, and visit their villages.

You could also visit Hue, a historic city in central Vietnam. Learn the story of Vietnam's last imperial dynasty through visiting its remaining palaces and ruins.

In Thailand, in addition to Bangkok and Phuket on the two-week itinerary above, you could also visit Chiang Mai in the north if you traveled for an extra few days.

Chiang Mai is a great place to visit at a slow pace and experience a variety of activities. You could visit a humane elephant camp, take cooking classes, and, if you're visiting in November, celebrate the romantic Yi Peng Sky Lantern Festival.

Week 1: Northern Vietnam

  • Day 1-2: Hanoi, Vietnam
  • Day 3-5: Sapa
  • Day 6-8: Ha Long Bay

Week 2: Central Vietnam

  • Day 9-10: Hue
  • Day 11-13: Hoi An
  • Day 14-15: Mekong Delta

Week 3: Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok, and Phuket

  • Day 16-17: Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam
  • Day 18: Bangkok, Thailand
  • Day 19-20: Phuket, Thailand

This itinerary is a suggestion and can be adjusted based on personal preferences, travel dates, and interests .

There is not much difference on the per-day travel cost between Thailand and Vietnam. They are both affordable.

A private tour is even more recommendable in Southeast Asia, where it is "an affordable luxury". You are guaranteed hassle-free, quality service, and a first-rate experience.

About 200 to 250 USD per person is the daily cost for a private Thailand and Vietnam tour, including airfares within/between Thailand and Vietnam, 4- or 5-star hotels, authentic lunches, attractions, guiding, and transfers. Kids under 10 would get 30–50% off.

Thailand and Vietnam are both year-round destinations. Each season has its own advantages.

If you want the best weather, then November to April (the dry season) is the best time for most of Thailand and Vietnam.

Christmas and New Year holidays are the busiest periods of the peak season. Crowds and the highest prices are expected.

If your travel time is flexible, a smart choice could be the time just before/after the peak season (the periods of early May and late October), with smaller crowds, still reasonably rain-free weather, and lower prices.

Dominated by showers, rather than continuous rain, the rainy season (generally from May to October) is not a decisive problem for your tour, if you are prepared to put up with delays/cancellations and on-the-tour adjustments. It is best for a cost-effective trip and quiet attractions.

If you are planning a summer holiday trip, June is a better time to go, due to relatively low rainfall and smaller crowds compared with July and August. See more on our Travel to Southeast Asia in Summer: Places to Go, Costs, Weather .

Considering international flights' convenience, starting your journey in Thailand or Vietnam would not make a big difference, as you can easily find international flights to both their capitals.

For a better travel experience, we suggest starting from Vietnam and ending in Thailand , as this winds down from cultural and adventure experiences in Vietnam to the tropical-island vibe and relaxation found in Thailand.

Flying is the best and fastest way to travel between Thailand and Vietnam. A direct journey takes about 2 hours. Bangkok, Hanoi, and Ho Chi Minh are the most-used flight hubs.

Many airlines have flights between Thailand and Vietnam. If you would like a boutique and luxury flight service, Bangkok Airways is the best choice. For good value and service, Thai Airways, Thai Smile, and Vietnam Airlines are the top choices. For budget airline options, you could check out AirAsia, Vietjet Air, and Thai Lion Air flights.

Our private tour service would manage all the transportation in Thailand and Vietnam and also the flights between Thailand and Vietnam, all according to your cost and service requirements.

Vietnam requires a tourist visa if you're from the US, Canada, Australia, etc. The most convenient way is to apply for an e-visa online . This is a very simple process that just requires you to fill in some information. If you are from certain European countries, like the UK, France, Italy, and Germany, you can enjoy visa-free entry.

Thailand allows visa-free entry from 64 countries, including the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Norway, etc.

If you have any questions or difficulties in applying, you can contact our experienced travel consultants for help.
