Kinnaur Valley Itinerary: A Detailed Travel Guide with Costs and Route

Kinnaur is a district in the state of Himachal Pradesh in India. While Himachal in itself is stunningly beautiful, Kinnaur Valley is like a whole other world. Lush greenery, bountiful apple orchards and smiling faces are synonymous with this region. This post contains a Kinnaur valley itinerary as well as general useful information for planning a trip to Kinnaur. The places covered are Kalpa, Sangla, Raksham, Chitkul and Nako . Out of these, Kalpa and Chitkul are everyone's favourites and must not be skipped. So let's dive right in and take a look at this Kinnaur valley itinerary !

This Kinnaur Valley for 10 days starts off in Delhi. From Delhi, you will make your way to Shimla and then towards the district capital of Kinnaur district, which is Reckong Peo. From Reckong Peo, you will move gradually to some of the most popular and beautiful places in Kinnaur valley and finish off your trip by returning to Delhi.

However, most people combine a trip to Kinnaur valley along with a trip to Spiti valley and so for the last day of this Kinnaur itinerary, instead of returning to Delhi, you can make your way towards Kaza in Spiti valley.

Best Time to Visit Kinnaur + Kinnaur Valley Weather

• April to June : This is probably the best time of the year to visit Kinnaur Valley . This is the Spring-Summer time which is when you'll find the best weather in Kinnaur valley. Flowers will be in bloom and the weather will be pleasant.
• July to August : These are the rainy months in Himachal. Rain showers will cause frequent landslides and there's a high chance of flooding as well. It's best to avoid visiting Kinnaur Valley during these months.
• September-October : This is the shoulder season . The weather during this time is neither too hot nor too cold. Besides, there's very little crowd, lots of greenery (since it's just after the rains) and an overall pleasant weather. For me personally, this is the best time to visit Kinnaur Valley.
• November-March : The winter months in Kinnaur can get quite cold with lots of snowfall and chances of roads being closed. With that being said, there are no tourists during this time so if you want to have Kinnaur to yourself, this is the best time of the year to visit the place.

How to Reach Kinnaur Valley

The best way to enter Kinnaur is to reach Shimla first and then go to Reckong Peo. Take a look at the various means of reaching Kinnaur valley from Delhi and Shimla:

1. By Bus (Public Transport)

If you're coming to Kinnaur valley from Delhi, take an overnight bus to Shimla , which reaches its destination early in the morning. Now you have 2 options. You can either spend the day at Shimla and take another bus the next morning or you can leave from Shimla for Reckong Peo immediately. Reckong Peo is the district headquarters of Kinnaur . From here, you'll find buses to all major places in Kinnaur such as Kalpa, Sangla, Chitkul, Nako as well as buses to Spiti.

2. By Train or Flight

For visiting Kinnaur, the nearest railway station and airport are both located in Shimla itself. You can take the Kalka-Shimla toy train to reach Shimla and thus enjoy a picturesque journey or you can take a direct flight to Shimla. Once you reach Shimla, there's only one option to travel to Kinnaur, which is by road.

If you have your own vehicle, whether it is a bike or car, you can enjoy a hassle-free journey by driving to Reckong Peo via Shimla yourself. Do keep in mind that in Kinnaur valley, you'll only find a petrol pump at Reckong Peo. So make sure you fill your tank up and carry extra fuel in case you'll need it.

4. Delhi to Kinnaur Valley

The fastest way to go from Delhi to Kinnaur valley is by taking the direct HRTC bus from Delhi to Reckong Peo . This bus takes 18 hours to complete its journey and the ticket is priced around INR 500-700 rupees. If you have the mental and physical strength to endure this bus journey then you should definitely go for it because it's the quickest way to go from Delhi to Reckong Peo by bus. The bus leaves from the ISBT Kashmiri Gate bus stand in Old Delhi.

What to Pack for Kinnaur Valley

Generally speaking, always be prepared for a little bit of cold weather in Kinnaur valley, unless you're travelling to Kinnaur right during the peak summer months.

During Summer, light t-shirts, pants and jeans should work just fine.

However, if you're visiting Kinnaur in September-October, you'll need a light sweater and jacket in addition to your regular clothes.

During the winter months of November, December, January and February, be prepared for snow and thus pack your layers and snow boots accordingly.

Cost of Trip to Kinnaur Valley

The cost of a trip to Kinnaur valley will depend on your mode of transportation and the places where you choose to stay. If you're going to be using public transportation throughout the trip, you can easily budget under INR 10k . However, if you book a taxi, the daily cost will keep adding to your trip. On the other hand, if you have your own vehicle, the cost of fuel will add to the cost of your trip. In any case, it's easy to find budget accommodation in Kinnaur. Moreover, the cost of food here is minimal as well. These are major cost-saving factors for a Kinnaur trip.

As mentioned earlier, this Kinnaur valley itinerary for 10 days begins at Delhi and ends at Delhi as well. However, if you're covering both Kinnaur valley and Spiti valley , then on the last day of your trip to Kinnaur, instead of heading back to Delhi, you can make your way towards Tabo or Kaza in Spiti valley.

Day 1 - Delhi to Shimla

Take an overnight bus from Kashmiri Gate in Delhi to Shimla. HRTC runs a number of buses between Delhi and Shimla. Taking a semi-sleeper AC Volvo bus would be a comfortable way to spend the journey. Nonetheless, there are different types of buses ranging according to various levels of comfort and budget. The bus will drop you at Shimla during the early hours of the morning, just in time to witness the sunrise.

Day 2 - Shimla Sightseeing

You will arrive at Shimla early in the morning. It's best to find a place to stay near the new ISBT Tutikandi bus stand itself because you need a catch the early morning bus to Reckong Peo the next day.

Where to Stay in Shimla

I found a homestay just a few meters ahead of the new Shimla bus stand, for the sake of convenience. The name of the homestay was Star A-One homestay , run by a nice fellow. He allowed me to check-in much before the standard time and woke up early the next day when I had to check-out. At this homestay, there were a range of rooms, each one being spacious, modern and clean with a nice view of the hills.

Places to Visit in Shimla

You can cover all of the major Shimla sightseeing places within 1 day. Take a local bus from the new bus stand (near which you'll be staying) to the old bus stand. From here, walk to the mall road. At the mall road, you can visit The Ridge, Christ Church, City Point and Viceregal Lodge .

Day 3 - Kalpa

Journey: Shimla - Reckong Peo - Kalpa

From Shimla, you will find lots of early morning buses to Reckong Peo. I took a bus at 4 am . This allowed me to reach Reckong Peo and then move on to Kalpa early enough to explore the place. There are buses every hour from Reckong Peo to Kalpa . Although Kalpa is located just 5 km uphill from Reckong Peo, it's a steep upward slope which takes half an hour to cover.

Where to Stay in Kalpa

I highly recommend staying on the upper side of Kalpa village. Once you arrive at Kalpa, just ask anyone for the stairs to go up. These stairs will open up to a road from where you'll get to see a panoramic view of Kalpa village with a backdrop of the Kinner Kailash range. There are numerous hotels on this road. I stayed at Hotel Parvati which had decent rooms and a balcony to enjoy the breathtaking views of the Kinner Kailash range in Kalpa.

Places to Visit in Kalpa

There's very little to do in Kalpa village itself. There are one temple and a monastery in close proximity to each other. If you're visiting Kalpa in September, you'll see apple blooms everywhere which is great for photographing. You can even hike to the nearby Roghi village to take a look at the famous Roghi suicide point .

Day 4 - Sangla

Journey: Kalpa - Reckong Peo - Sangla

I had a leisurely breakfast at Kalpa and then took a bus at around 10 am for Reckong Peo. The bus journey hardly took 15 minutes, since it was going downhill. Next, from Reckong Peo I took the 12 pm bus for Sangla . The bus reached Sangla within 2 hours. There was a nice restaurant right next to the bus stand where I had my lunch and then proceeded to find a hotel.

Where to Stay in Sangla

When you arrive at Sangla bus stand, you'll see a little bridge to the right. Once you cross that bridge there's a hotel right there called Baspa River View . Its close proximity to the bus stand attracted me. The room had a comfortable bed and 2 blankets, which was just what I needed. They have rooms in 2 budgets as well as a small terrace.

Places to Visit in Sangla

Now here's where it gets interesting. Most people who visit Kinnaur tend to ignore Sangla assuming that there isn't much to do here. On the contrary, I found Sangla to be just as interesting as any other place in Kinnaur Valley, if not a little more. Take a look at some of the places to visit in Sangla:

1. Bering Nag Temple

Being Nag Temple was one of the most delightful experiences of my trip to Kinnaur valley. The temple complex houses a Buddhist monastery as well. A local told me that you'll find Hinduism and Buddhism co-exiting only in Kinnaur. While in Sangla, I was lucky enough to be there during the local Phulech festival.

2. Trout Fish Farm

Visiting the trout fish farm was my favourite thing to do in Sangla valley. The hike from Sangla to the trout fish farm takes you through quaint bridges, idyllic villages, apple orchards and pine trees. The sight looks like something out of a fairytale! I stopped by at one of the bridges on the way to dip my feet in the river and enjoy the freshness in the air.

3. Kamru Fort

Kamru Fort is located right at the top of the Kamru village, approximately 5 km from Sangla. The walk up to Kamru can get a little exhausting so if you're one who doesn't enjoy hikes, you can hire a vehicle to drop you there. Once at Kamru, you'll get a beautiful view of the Sangla valley.

Day 5 - Raksham

Journey: Sangla - Raksham

The same bus which brought you to Sangla from Reckong Peo will go further towards Chitkul, stopping on the way at Raksham (aka Rakchcham, Rakcham). If you wish you leave earlier, take the bus which leaves at 11 am from Sangla . While the distance from Sangla to Raksham isn't much, the roads here are in bad condition and quite dangerous as well. Thus the bus journey takes almost an hour.

Where to Stay in Raksham

There are many riverside camps in Raksham. One of the camps I visited was called Kailash View Camp . From the bus stand, walk towards the bridge which will take you to the other side of the river. This camp is the first one on the road.

Things to do in Raksham

Raksham is an idyllic little village with very little to do. If you're here during August-September, you'll see all of Raksham covered in orange and pink blossoms. Take long walks through the village or short hikes to find the best vantage points to photograph these blooms. You'll notice that any itinerary for Kinnaur valley usually ignores Raksham but I highly recommend visiting this gem of a place if you're looking for an offbeat place or if you're taking a trip to Kinnaur during the months of August-September.

Day 6 - Chitkul

Journey: Raksham - Chitkul

Once again, the bus which goes from Reckong Peo to Sangla and Raksham will end its journey at Chitkul. When you reach Raksham from Sangla, take note of the time at which the bus reaches. Be there at the same spot a little earlier than the time you noted to catch the same bus to Chitkul the next day.

Where to Stay in Chitkul

There are limited options for accommodation in Chitkul since it's a small village on the India-Tibet border. I stayed at Zostel Chitkul which was a wonderful property where I met tons of other travellers with whom I ended up travelling to Spiti. The place can get really popular around the weekends. I saw a lot of people going back disappointed because the entire hostel was booked out. Thankfully, I had made prior reservations.

Things to do in Chitkul

One of the best parts about Chitkul is that there's no network connectivity here whatsoever. This village is so beautiful that you can spend days here completely disconnected from the outside world. There are a few hikes that you can do around Chitkul. You can even walk up to the first check-post on the India-Tibet border . Apart from that, visit Hindustan ka Akhri Dhaba for a hearty Indian meal. From here, you can find a short-cut to go down to the bridge . Cross that bridge and explore the other side. Is Chitkul Open in March?

This seems to be a popular and common question asked by people who are looking at making a Chitkul trip. The answer totally depends on weather conditions. Yes, Chitkul will be accessible but the ease of getting here depends on the snow on the road. If there's heavy snowfall, some roads might be closed. Besides, even hotels may not be readily available in Chitkul in March if water pipes are frozen. So I suggest looking at the Kinnaur weather conditions before travelling to Chitkul in March.

Day 7 - Chitkul

In all honesty, just one day is not enough to take in the beauty and freshness of Chitkul. Definitely keep at-least another day to explore and relax at Chitkul before you head further. In fact, I met travellers who had even spent up to a week in Chitkul! I myself spent 3 days here exploring every nook and cranny of Chitkul. And that's why I've given Chitkul one extra day in this Kinnaur valley itinerary.

Day 8 - Nako

Journey: Chitkul - Reckong Peo - Nako

Take the early morning 6.30 am bus from Chitkul to Reckong Peo . The bus stops briefly at Sangla for breakfast then continues to its destination. You'll reach Reckong Peo in 3-4 hours. From Reckong Peo, take the 12 pm bus to Nako . This bus goes to Shoja via Sumdo, Pooh and Nako.

Where to Stay in Nako

There's no shortage of hotels and homestays in Nako. Although it's a tiny village, you'll see lots of travellers here and plenty of activity going on. I stayed at Lovon Hotel which was right at the entrance of Nako village. The room was spacious and clean and had a balcony overlooking the valley. What's more, the in-house restaurant serves delicious spring rolls!

Things to do in Nako

There's very little to do in Nako. It's known predominantly for the Nako lake . The locals believe it to be a sacred lake. This lake looks stunning with the village on one side and barren hills on the other. You can walk up at a nearby hill to get a nice view of the lake.  Apart from that, you can visit the Nako monastery as well.

Day 9 - Nako to Reckong Peo

You can start your return journey on the 9th day. However, if you're going to Spiti, you'll find a Kaza bound bus from Nako at 10 am . On the other hand, if you're returning back, take the bus which goes from Kaza to Reckong Peo via Nako. Spend the night at a hotel close to the bus stand at Reckong Peo.

Day 10 - Reckong Peo to Delhi

You'll get a morning bus going from Reckong Peo to Delhi at the bus stand. Make sure you note down the timing of the bus the previous day and arrive early enough to get a seat in the bus.

Kinnaur district is a scenic district situated in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh, India. It is divided into three administrative areas, namely Kalpa, Nichar (Bhabanagar), and Pooh, and has six tehsils. The district’s administrative headquarters is located in Reckong Peo. Kinnaur is known for its beautiful landscape that comprises three high mountain ranges, including Zanskar and the Himalayas. The valleys of Baspa, Satluj, and Spiti, along with their tributaries, are enclosed by these mountain ranges. The area is covered with thick wood, orchards, fields, and hamlets. The district is also home to the Kinnaur Kailash mountain peak, which is known for its natural rock Shivling (Shiva lingam). The district was opened to outsiders in 1989, and the old Hindustan-Tibet Road passes through the Kinnaur valley. Kinnaur is the second richest district in terms of per capita income after Solan in Himachal Pradesh.

Kinnaur was earlier a north-eastern segment of the erstwhile Bushahr principality, which had its capital at Kamru. Later, the capital was shifted to Rampur Bushahr. After the fall of the Kannauj Empire, the rulers of Kamru annexed adjoining territories by force and laid the foundation of the state of Bushahr, to which the region of Kinnaur belonged till the dissolution of the state after the independence of India. Kinnaur also has historical cultural links with Ngari Prefecture of the Tibetan Autonomous Region. The early history of the Kinnaur region is obscure and the reference of the Kinnaur or Kannaura and their land is mostly confined to legends and mythological accounts.

Kinnaur is a mountainous area ranging in altitude from 2,320 to 6,816 metres (7,612 to 22,362 ft). It is one of the smallest districts in India by population and is known for the Kinnaur Kailash, a mountain peak that holds significant religious importance for Hindus. The district is located about 235 km (146 mi) from the state capital, Shimla, in the northeast corner of Himachal Pradesh, bordering Tibet to the east.

There are also regular state-run and private buses from Delhi, Shimla, Chandigarh, Kalka, Manali, Sangla, etc. The most convenient travel option is to book a car from Delhi, or Chandigarh and drive to Kinnaur. You can also take a bus or rent a car from Shimla to Kinnaur .

There is no flight connectivity to Kinnaur. The nearest airport is in Jubbarhatti Airport in Shimla, about 267KM away. The next closest and major international airport is in Delhi. From either of these places, you can book an airport cab to drive to the village.

Best time to Visit Kinnaur 

Sitting high on the Himalayan mountains, the village enjoys a typical mountainous weather. The spring-summer months, from March to June, are the best time to visit, when the temperature is the most pleasant, with fresh vegetation, ample sunlight, and comfortable outdoor atmosphere. But, if you want to experience the cold weather, then you can travel in the winter months, from October to February.

Kinnaur is a small hill station in Himachal Pradesh. It is quite peaceful and scenic place in Himachal. Further, the location is a perfect delight for Nature lover. Located at an altitude of 2350 meters above sea level, Sarahan is a small village in Himachal Pradesh. It is also known as the ‘Gateway of Kinnaur’. The location is fully surrounded by dense forest of pine, orchards and deodar trees. Further, it is a perfect blend of mountain valleys, temples and beautiful landscapes. The traditional wooden homes with a touch of unique Tibetan architecture makes it one of the best places to visit in Kinnaur.

For the adventure seeker, there are many trekking routes in this region. Apart from all these things the location has high religious value too. The famous Bhimakali Mata temple also lies in this area that attracts lost of the devotee. So overall one of the best sightseeing in Kinnaur that can’t be missed at any instant.

Sangla Valley

People who are looking for offbeat travels and are not much interested in commercial places, they find it a perfect place to visit. Sangla village was once popular for its wooden houses with slate roofs which are being reconstructed again. Amidst the mountains with greenery all around, Sangla is a wonderful place to travel and stay for a while. Also known as Baspa Valley, Sangla attracts a number of tourists during October, therefore if you are looking forward to a relaxing and a serene holiday then you should avoid visiting this place in October.

In the rainy seasons, people generally avoid this travel as the road connectivity becomes an issue. In winters the valley receives huge snowfalls. You will find a number of apple trees here. One major tourist attraction is a visit to the Bering Nag Temple forms the centerpiece of the annual Phulaich Festival in September. If you enjoy nature then you could enjoy walking down to the lower village, where you will see plenty of old stone houses and Buddhist and Hindu temples.

It is a nature lover and trekker paradise. Further, the location is very famous for Nako Lake which remains covered with snow for the most part of the year.

The place is also known as the ‘Land of the Fairytales’. One can also get a chance to spot many rare species in this region. Some of the major tourist attraction in this region is the Buddhist Temple and Spiti Valley. So if you are planning a Himachal holiday trip then it will be a worth visiting in Kinnaur.

The valley starts from Karcham, which is situated at an altitude of 1,899 meters. This is also the point where the Baspa River coming from the east joins the River Satluj. The road for Baspa valley from here also leads to the Hindustan Tibet road at the river junction and once you turn south, you get to cross the River Satluj over a bridge to reach Karcham.

The Baspa valley opens up beyond Sangla and is known to be full wooden slopes as far as Chitkul is concerned is located at an altitude of 3,435 meters, above sea level. The last inhabited village of the Baspa valley is Chitkul which is surrounded by green fields and High Mountain peaks.

The name Rakchham has been derived from the term, ‘Rak which means ‘ a stone and ‘Chham’ which means a bridge. This is known as one of the most beautiful villages located in the Baspa valley. The village is located at an altitude of 2,900 meters, above sea level.  The village is located in Kinnaur and it is located on the right bank of the Baspa River.

Kinnaur: Exploring the Enchanting Beauty of Himachal Pradesh

Kinnaur is one of the least populous Indian districts, despite being a mountain range spanning 6,816 meters in altitude. Located on the border with Tibet, the  Kailash  makes the place a holy place for people belonging to the Hindu faith.

The potential and  places to explore in Kinnaur  for adventurous travel in the place are enormous. The Tourist Places in Kinnaur Valley  are great places to go hiking because of all the different trails available.

For an instance,  Kalpa  is home to ski runs and is also a great place to get your rock-climbing  adventure  underway.

Popular Destinations in Kinnaur Himachal Pradesh:

Kinnaur kailash.

The trail up this peak, widely regarded as one of the most difficult in the world, is not for the faint of heart.

Near the Indo-Tibetan border, at an elevation of around 17200 feet above sea level, is where you’ll find the  Kinner Kailash  trek range in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh.

Starting at Kalpa, the grand parikrama of  Kailash  travels via the Truing valley before returning via the Sangla valley . The  Sutlej River , which originates in the southern Tibetan mountains of  Kailash Parvat  and flows through the valley , adds to the spectacular scenery of the walk.

The majority of the drive to Sangla appears to be an experience in itself, with lovely Kinnaur apple orchards and ‘hanging’ settlements on the other side of the gorge.

Sangla, the valley ’s largest populated settlement, features unique Tibetan eateries and an ATM, but the valley ’s renowned potatoes are a must-try (the area grows some of the best-quality potatoes in the world).

A short distance away lies the intriguing  Kamru Fort , which includes the  Kamakhya Devi Shrine . Much of the architecture here is a great blend of history and culture, with old forts and traditional Tibetan wood carving.

Tourism, on the other hand, is an important source of income for people in the valley , and cordial greetings are part of the wonderful culture of these delightful Kinnauri-speaking natives, making them the  top tourist attractions in Kinnaur.

Traveling to Chitkul in the winter is a total digital detox. In the winter, you get to know local life and culture better and learn firsthand how difficult it is to survive in the Himalayas. The difficulties stem from a lack of road connectivity, running tap water, warm water, and room heating service.

The village is populated with little wooden plank cottages and dwellings, as well as a number of Buddhist temples located in and around the settlement.

Hindustan Ka Aakhri Dhaba , as the signboard of the restaurant boasts itself, is located near the  Indo-Tibetian border  in the  Chitkul valley , on the banks of the  Baspa River . It is located at 3500 meters in elevation and serves great local cuisine and snacks to hungry guests.

Kalpa is a beautiful place nestled in the mountains. It’s like a picture from a fairy tale with tall mountains, green fields, and cozy houses. Will it snow in Kinnaur?

Since   Kinnaur temperature   experiences considerable snowfall throughout the winter,  the best time to visit Kinnaur  is April, when the snow is still present but has lost some of its icy chills. Due to its proximity to Tibet, the area’s culture is strongly influenced by Tibetan factors, so the Kinnaur weather is chilly .

This might become a fantastic method of learning about the wide range of cultural practices, historical sites, geographical areas, and natural resources that exist.

Since   Kinnaur temperature   experiences considerable snowfall throughout the winter,  the best time to visit  is April.

What is there to see in Kinnaur? The answer to this question will be a long list of places because Kinnaur is an entire district. You can spend several days, weeks even, in the Valley, and will still not be done with the list. The natural beauty of the place is its biggest attraction but there are several other places in every town or village that are worthy of mention. In this article, I will provide a complete list of tourist places to visit in Kinnaur Valley that you can use for your local sightseeing in Kinnaur.

About Kinnaur

Let us first talk about Kinnaur as a region so that you have a better understanding and idea of the places. It is one of the twelve administrative districts of Himachal Pradesh and the second least populous one, after Lahaul and Spiti. It is spread over an area of 6,401 km2 and is surrounded by three high mountain ranges enclosing valleys of Sutlej, Spiti, Baspa, and their tributaries. (Source: Wikipedia).

The valley is divided into two parts, Upper Kinnaur and Lower Kinnaur. You enter the district shortly after Rampur and then it stretches as far as Nako Village. Sarahan is known as the gateway to Kinnaur and Reckong Peo is its administrative headquarters.

The area around Sarahan, Sangla, Chikul, Reckong Peo, and Kalpa is known as lower Kinnaur, and the places like Pooh, Khab, and Nako are a part of upper Kinnaur . Nako is often confused as part of being Spiti valley because of the resemblance in the landscape but it is in fact the last village of Kinnaur Valley. Once you cross over Nako, you enter Spiti.

Most of your drive through the valley will see you traveling along the Sutlej River. As you enter Sangla Valley, you will be right next to the beautiful Baspa River. At Khab, near Nako, you will also see the confluence of Sutlej and Spiti Rivers.

Places to visit in Kinnaur Valley

There are four major places that become a part of a trip to Kinnaur Valley. These are the villages of Sarahan, Sangla, Chitkul, and Kalpa. The list is of course not limited to these places and depending on the time you have in hand, can get extended as well. You can also spend time in Shimla and Narkanda while traveling to Kinnaur and if time allows, can also travel as far as Nako.

So all your tourist spots in Kinnaur are in and around these places only. I have extensively written about these destinations but in this article, I will list down the tourist attractions in Kinnaur as a quick reference.

Natural Beauty

This I believe is a given when you talk about places to visit in Kinnaur Valley. The natural beauty of Kinnaur Valley will really leave you charmed. It is one of the last few places in our country that is still easily accessible but is yet untouched by the tourism mania. Lush green valleys, snow-capped mountains, beautiful orchards, riverbanks, waterfalls, natural springs are what Kinnaur Valley is all about.

If you included Nako in your itinerary, you will find the slow transformation from all the greenery to the barren brown landscape quite amazing. Within a few hours of drive, all the green will vanish and you would have entered a desert.

Sutlej River

Most of your drive in Kinnaur will be on the banks of the River Sutlej. You will get your first view of the mighty river as you start driving down from Nako. Slowly, you will then drive down right to its banks, and then it will remain on your left all the way until Khab Bridge where it is joined by the Spiti River.

There will be several spots where you can even get down to the river as well. Photographic spots too will be in plenty where you can get some memorable pictures.

• Baspa River

Once you turn right from Karcham and cross the Dam over, you will enter Sangla Valley, also known as Baspa River Valley. The river flows down to the village of Chitkul, which is the last village on the border and this is where the motorable road ends. After Chitkul, it flows for about 45 kilometers before merging with River Sutlej at Karcham. On the way, it forms the beautiful Baspa River Valley that Chitkul and Sangla are located it.

Sarahan is located at a distance of about 170 kilometers from Shimla. It is known as the ‘gateway of Kinnaur’ and is best known for its Bhimakali temple, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. It was once the summer capital of the rulers of the Bushahr Kingdom and still holds great significance for the locals.

An ideal itinerary of Kinnaur Valley will have you spend at least 1 day in Sarahan. It is at a significant height and offers a stunning view of the entire valley around. During the winter season, it remains buried under snow and turns into a winter wonderland. The place also has several beautiful apple orchards and is really a good place for nature walks.

In order to get to Sarahan, you will drive from Rampur towards Reckong Peo and will arrive at the small town of Jeori. From Jeori, you will turn right on an uphill road. The road is a very narrow one and will climb steeply for the next 12 kilometers, arriving at Sarahan.

Other than the natural beauty, there are a few places in Sarahan that are worth a visit. Below is a list. If you were able to spend an entire day in Sarahan, you will be easily able to cover them all.

After Sarahan, the next entry in the list of places to visit in Kinnaur Valley is the town Sangla. The word Sangla stands for both the town and the valley that it is located in. It is hard to say whether the town was named after the valley or vice versa.

In order to get here, you will drive down from Sarahan to Jeori and then take the road towards Reckong Peo. On the way, you will arrive at the magnificent Karcham Dam. Turn right, cross the dam over and you would have entered the beautiful Sangla Valley, also known as Baspa River valley.

About 20 kilometers after Karcham, you will first arrive at Sangla town. If you continued for another 20, you will reach the end of the road at Chitkul village.

It will not take you long to conclude why Sangla Valley is so well known for its natural beauty. Located right next to the river, the town is really a beauty in itself. It is not too big in size but has an ATM, petrol station, several hotels, and pretty much everything you will need as a tourist.

he natural beauty of the place will be its primary attraction. You can take a walk along the river and enjoy the peace and tranquility that it offers. Other than that, mentioned below are the other tourist attractions of Sangla.

A little ahead of Sangla is the small (and I mean really small) village of Chikul. It is famed as the last village on the Indian border and a restaurant here literally reads as ‘Hindustan ka Aakhri Dhaba’. Well, it is true that the road does end in Chitkul, and further ahead lies the Indo-Tibet border.

Did you know that tourism was not even allowed in Chitkul until a few years ago? It is true. It was open for tourism recently and has been gaining immense popularity ever since.

I visited here about a decade ago and since then, it is among my favorite hill stations. The setting of the village really looks like straight out of a painting. It is just a group of a few houses, hotels, a temple, and an ancient fort, that’s it. You can walk from one end of Chitkul to the other in under 15 minutes, that’s how small it is. But when it comes to natural beauty, the place is really a giant.

Mentioned below are some tourist attractions in Chitkul that you can visit during your stay here. All of these can be covered in a single day easily. A lot of people even stay in Sangla only and visit Chitkul on a day trip but I will highly recommend that you spend at least one night in the village to explore it properly.

Now let us move on to the heart of Kinnaur valley, the village of Kalpa. The view of Kinner Kailash peaks from here is probably enough to keep you in Kalpa for a couple of days. You can just sit down in the balcony with a cup of tea and keep enjoying the view for hours. That is how magical it is.

Mentioned below is a list of tourist places in Kalpa and its nearby areas.

In order to get to Kalpa, you will have to drive back from Chitkul to Karcham and then take the road towards Reckogn Peo. It falls a little after the Powari petrol pump, to your left. The narrow road climbs up steeply and you will first arrive at Reckong Peo after a drive of 8 kilometers.

Reckong Peo is the headquarters of Kinnaur Valley and if you want, you can stay here as well. My recommendation will however be that you keep driving further up for another 7 kilometers and stay in Kalpa instead.

The places I listed above can be covered in a single day except for the trek to Chaka Meadows. If you want to cover that as well, you may have to spend another day in Kalpa.

Nako is the last village of Kinnaur Valley. Due to the similarity of landscape, people often confuse it as a part of Spiti Valley which is not entirely true. If you view it from the point that Spiti is more barren and Kinnaur is lush green, then yes, Nako does feel more than Spiti than Kinnaur. But from the point of a district , it is considered to be the upper Kinnaur Valley.

Not many people visiting Kinnaur come to Nako. The only tourists you will find here are the ones completing the Spiti Circuit. But if you had some time in hand and could spare a couple of days, then I will highly recommend adding Nako Village to your itinerary.

From Kalpa, Nako is only a 4 hours drive. If you started in the morning by 8, you will be in Nako by 12 at most, before lunch. This will give you the rest of the day for sightseeing in Nako. Listed below are the places you can easily cover in a matter of a few hours or while driving to Nako.

• Kazigs / Ka Loops
• Confluence of Spiti & Sutlej Rivers at Khab
• Malling Nallah

Tourist Places in Kinnaur Valley

That is it. That is your complete list of places to visit in Kinnaur Valley. Any name other than this that you will read on travel company portals is either not in Kinnaur or is just way too remote to be explored. Even going through this will need at least 7 to 9 days in Kinnaur, from a place like Delhi.

The road to Kinnaur valley passes through Shimla which in itself is a great tourist attraction. Another great tourist spot that you will pass through on the way is Narkanda, one of my favorite hill stations. If you could, I will surely recommend spending a day couple of days in Shimla and Narkanda as well.

Kinnaur, one of the prettiest valleys in Himachal Pradesh if not in India, is a heady mix of rocky mountains, snow-covered peaks, and lush valleys full of fruit orchards and alpine forests. Before you get tired of the stunning mountain views, if that is even possible, you can divert your attention to the old Himachali tradition and culture that you will find in the form of interesting architecture, ancient temples and delicious local cuisines.

Whether you are looking for a calm and relaxed holiday in the hills or an adventurous one full of outdoor exploration, Kinnaur has got them all. It is a stunning destination and if you are yet to explore Kinnaur, let this list of beautiful places in Kinnaur Valley inspire you to do so.

Kalpa is well off the beaten path. Literally. Located on the Shimla-Kaza highway, there is a turn for Kalpa, an uphill road if you miss that you have gone too far. It is one of the prettiest villages you will ever see. With apple orchards everywhere, quaint village setting, tall pine trees everywhere, and spectacular views of Kinner Kailash and Raldang Kailash make Kalpa a picture-perfect offbeat holiday destination.

Sangla Valley

Are you familiar with the pictures of Japan covered in cherry blossoms? They look so pretty, don’t they? We are here to tell you to forget about Japan, because Himachal’s very own Sangla Valley in Kinnaur is just as enchanting. Evergreen forests, picturesque mountainscapes, cherry and apple orchards all around, and the stunning Baspa River, there isn’t anything unlikeable about Sangla Valley.

Nichar is one among the three administrative areas of Kinnaur district – Kalpa, Nichar and Pooh. For those interested in nature and wildlife, Nichar is a great place to explore. Nichar is located near Taranda Village, and is still a destination with less tourists. You can expect to have a quiet time in nature here.

Reckong Peo

Come here for the traditional Kinnauri experience. Reckong Peo town sits at an altitude of 2290 m above sea level and the views of the mountains you get from here are just out of this world. You will feel like you are up close and personal with the snow-clad mountains. The locals have beautifully preserved their local culture and tradition and for visitors they become unique experiences. Reckong Peo is also an important Buddhist centre.

Lipa Asrang Sanctuary

Lipa Asrang Sanctuary is located 5022 m above sea level, just outside of Moorang town. The 30.89 sq km sanctuary is home to various endemic alpine species of flora and fauna. The sanctuary is a great place to see yak, bear,goral, brown musk deer, and blue sheep.

Rupin Pass starts from Dhaula in Uttarakhand and ends in Sangla in Himachal Pradesh. It is one of the most popular trekking routes in India and a favourite among adventure seekers. The Rupin trek is not an easy one but the views en route are refreshing and give unique experiences to those who do this trail. You will pass through some of the most majestic views of the HImalayas that includes snow covered landscapes, lush alpine forest, waterfalls and beautiful meadows. The views are worth the effort.

Located at an altitude of 2165 m, the village of Sarhan is popularly known as the Gateway To Kinnaur. You can start your Kinnauri experience from Sarhan. Terraced farms, apple orchards, beautiful village streets lined with pine trees, they all give you company. Not to forget the beautiful temples that are constructed using traditional Himachali architecture techniques. Bhimakali and Devi Kali temples are what you should plan for when in Sarhan.

Suicide Point

If thrill is something you look for when you travel, Kinnaur’s Suicide Point should be thrilling enough for you. Located three km away from the Kalpa, Suicide Point is a very dangerous view point with an approximately 500 ft drop. The road has some serious bends and this calls for very careful driving. The views from this point are stunning.

Reckong Peo, Kinnaur Overview

Reckong Peo also known as Peo is the headquarter of the Kinnaur district and lies in the middle of the Himalayas. Located at a distance of 260 km from Shimla and at a height of 2,300 metres, this serene town is famous for its apple orchards. It is inhabited by Kinnauri people and has a diverse culture even in today's modern era. Some of the other key attractions include the stately deodars, apple orchards and pine trees which enhance the beauty of the place even more. You can easily view the two greatest wonders of the Himalayas, i.e. the Kailash mountain and the Shivaling rock from Reckong Peo.

As per history, Reckong Peo was born on 1st May 1960 and was known as Kinnaura earlier. Between the 9th and 12th century, the district was ruled by the Guge Kingdom of Tibet. It was after the rule that the district was divided into seven parts which were collectively known as Sat Khund. The district was then conquered by Akbar after which it became a part of the Mughal Empire. After the Mughal Empire came to an end, the district came to be known as Chini Tehsil which was an important part in the progress of the region. Reckong Peo has numerous facilities including medicines, electronic accessories and general stores. There are numerous small hotels present in the main market ranging from INR 300 to INR 500. However, in these hotels, no parking facility is available. There are some resorts present on the way to Kalpa as well. Since tourists preferably stay at Kalpa (13km away from Reckong Peo), fewer resorts are present in Reckong Peo.

The unspoilt, serene and picturesque village of Nako is located in Kinnaur District of Himachal Pradesh at a height of around 3600m. Nako is found at the east end of Kinnaur Valley and can be called almost the last attraction on the way to Malling Nullah. Malling Nullah is located in between Kinnaur and Spiti Valley and one of the most happening travel destinations of Himachal Pradesh. Nako lies on the region close to Tibbetan Border and travellers thus need to possess inner line permit to travel to this region. Inner line permits are required for the foreign nationals for overnight stay in any part of the village Nako.

As the village is very small in its area, one can easily explore the hidden gems of this village on foot. The major attraction of Nako Village is the Nako Lake which is located amidst extremely hilly terrains. Close to this lake one can get to see four Buddhist monasteries and a huge footlike impression.
