How to Get to Boston’s Cruise Port

How to Get to Boston’s Cruise Port

Living somewhat close to Boston I’m often asked, “What’s the best way to get to the cruise port in Boston?” There are several options, depending on your budget and the amount of time you have to get to the port.

If your cruise embarks from Boston’s Flynn Cruise Port, there are multiple ways to get there. Whether you’re flying into Boston and going directly to the cruise port, driving into the city, or leaving from a hotel, we have you covered with all of your alternatives.

Getting to Flynn Cruise Port

The Raymond L. Flynn Black Falcon Cruise Port in Boston is home to cruise ships operated by Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Holland America. It also serves as a port of call for cruises operated by Carnival, Celebrity, Cunard, Disney, MSC, Oceania, P&O, Ponant, Princess, Regent Seven Seas, Scenic, Seabourn, Silversea, Viking Ocean, Windstar, and German lines AIDA, Phoenix Reisen, and TUI.

Flynn Cruise Port is located at 1 Black Falcon Avenue, Boston. Situated in South Boston’s Seaport district, it’s just a ten-minute drive from Logan International Airport.

Parking at Flynn Cruise Port

If you live locally and are planning to drive in, parking at Boston’s cruise port is convenient, but expensive!

Parking at the terminal is $25 per day if paid in advance, and $30 per day if you pay on site.

If you decide to park at the cruise port, d rop your bags at the port first, then make the five-minute drive over to 406 Summer Street (across from the Waterside Place in the Seaport District).

A complimentary shuttle is available from 406 Summer St. to the cruise terminal.

The Massport website has detailed information on directions to the lot, parking, and advance payment.

Should I take the cruise line’s transfer service to and from the cruise port?

If you’re flying into Logan Airport the morning of your cruise, it may be tempting to pre-pay for a transfer from the cruise line. A cruise line representative will meet you at baggage claim, and take you to a coach that will bring you to the cruise port. For some people, this makes sense. However, it’s usually cheaper (and sometimes more convenient) to arrange your own transportation.

Often, you will have to wait until the coach is ready to leave. Not everyone who is taking that coach is on the same flight as you, and it wouldn’t be cost-effective for the coach to make a trip to the cruise port every time a small group of passengers arrives.

If you’re flying out of Boston the afternoon or evening that your cruise disembarks, a cruise line transfer will allow you to store your luggage while you sightsee. However, you do have other options, including storing your suitcases at South Station , or taking advantage of a luggage storage option when you use a water taxi (keep reading to find out how to do this).

Taking public transportation to Flynn Cruise Port

From Logan Airport, take the free SL1 (Silver Line) bus and get off at Silver Line Way (behind the Manulife building). Then cross over on foot to the outbound track and take the SL2 bus to the Drydock Avenue stop. You’ll need to purchase a CharlieTicket on the SL2 bus. A cash ticket is $2.75.

From there it’s a two-minute walk to the cruise terminal. Head east on Drydock Ave to Design Center Pl. and turn right. Turn left onto Black Falcon Ave and the terminal will be on your right.

If you’re already in the city and planning on taking public transportation to the cruise port, you can take the SL2 bus from South Station to Drydock Avenue. As above, head east on Drydock Ave to Design Center Pl. and turn right. Turn left onto Black Falcon Ave and the terminal will be on your right.

Taking a taxi or rideshare to Flynn Cruise Port

If you’re staying in town before your cruise, or even in a local suburb, a taxi, Uber, or Lyft is a convenient way to get to the cruise port.

The same goes for if you’re flying into Logan Airport and going directly to the port.

A taxi from the airport will cost you around $25, depending on traffic. You’ll find taxi stands outside the Arrivals level.

Uber and Lyft both service Logan Airport. The pickup locations are currently as follows:

  • Terminal A: Pick up is on the Arrivals level. Use the crosswalk to reach the lot.
  • Terminal B: Pick up is in the Arrivals level garage next to the limo pick up area.
  • Terminal C: Pick up is on the Arrivals level. Use door C110, walk right, then use the crosswalk to reach the lot.
  • Terminal E: Pick up is on the Arrivals level. Exit through door E102.

There is also a shared van service that will take you from Logan Airport and Flynn Cruise Port. Go Boston Shuttle will cost about $16 per person for a one-way trip, and one child under age three is free of charge.

Note that on embarkation day, there will be a lot of traffic on Black Falcon Avenue, the one-way street where the cruise port is located. Make sure you allow enough time to get to the port!

Taking a water taxi to Flynn Cruise Port

There are two companies in Boston that offer water taxis to the cruise port. Both Rowes Wharf Water Transport and Boston Harbor Cruises offer similar routes and pricing. Their boats operate year-round and are covered and heated if the weather presents less than ideal conditions.

From Logan Airport, you can take the free #66 shuttle to the water taxi dock. This shuttle is available from all airport terminals. From the water taxi dock, a dispatcher will call a water taxi for you (they operate on-call).

A water taxi will cost you $15 for a one-way trip. If you’re traveling with children, Boston Harbor Cruises offers a reduced rate of $3 one-way for kids aged 3 to 11. Children under three are free.

Water taxis also run from many waterfront locations to the cruise port. You’ll need to call for pickup:

Taking a coach to Flynn Cruise Port

If you live within driving distance of Boston but don’t want to pay hefty parking fees at the port, a better option would be to take a coach to South Station and take the Silver Line to the cruise port (see directions above). Many coach lines offer free parking for customers traveling with them.

Can I leave my car at an MBTA garage and take the T?

This thought has crossed my mind, since the daily parking rate at MBTA garages and parking lots is inexpensive.

There are a few MBTA stations that allow overnight parking , but note that if you leave your car longer than 24 hours, the daily parking rate jumps from $6-9 per day to about $15 per day (different stations have different fees). Also, vehicles left for 30 days are subject to towing.

Would I try this if I was cruising out of Boston? No. Although I’ve left my car in an MBTA lot overnight a few times, I wouldn’t chance parking there for a week or more. Not only is it not that cheap once the $15 per day rate applies, but these garages are meant to service commuters and day-trippers.

Parking at MBTA stations is limited, and I wouldn’t want to take up a space meant for a commuter when I have other options. (I used to commute into Boston from the suburbs, and it’s no fun when you’re late for work because the garage was full and you had to drive to another station).

Do any Boston hotels offer Park and Cruise?

Some hotels near cruise ports offer a “park and cruise” service, where customers who stay at the hotel the night before a cruise can leave their car in the hotel’s lot during the cruise for free or a small charge.

Unfortunately, due to the high price of parking in Boston, there are very few hotels in the city that offer this service.

If you’re willing to stay a little outside of Boston proper, there are several more hotels that have park and cruise.

Embassy Suites at Logan Airport offers a “Park and Go” package including parking and a complimentary shuttle to and from the cruise port.

Choice Hotels has “Stay and Cruise” packages at various price points at several properties within Boston, as well as in the surrounding suburbs.

One caveat: be sure that you book a package deal at these hotels – don’t just assume that the parking will be free if you book a room for the night before your cruise.

How do WE get to the cruise port?

You’re probably wondering how Mr. SBC and I choose to get to the cruise port when we cruise out of Boston. We live about 90 minutes outside of the city, so it’s too far for an Uber. We also don’t like paying hefty parking fees. There are no short cruises out of Boston, so the minimum parking fee at the cruise terminal would run about $200 for a week.

What do we do? We have our “private chauffeur” (my daughter) drive us in and pick us up. If she comes with us, or when she’s away at school, we drive to a friend’s house closer to the city and leave our car there.

I’ll admit we’re pretty lucky to have these options. But if we didn’t? I’d definitely park at our regional coach company’s lot for free, and take the bus into Boston.

How long does it take to go from South Station’s Concord bus line to the Flynn Cruise dock to pick up the Norwegian Pearl? Is it within walking distance or should we get a taxi or Uber? Thank you.

Hi Brenda, it's about a mile and a half from South Station to the cruise port, so I'd estimate it's about a 30-minute walk. If you have very light luggage you could do it, but I'd probably just order an Uber :)

One of the Oldest Cities of the United States

Boston is the capital of Massachusetts. Rich in history, it’s one of the oldest cities of the United States and the birthplace of American independence. The city is the administrative, financial center and New England’s largest city.

Deciding to spend additional time in Boston before or after a cruise is a great way to extend your vacation. Using the ferry service to discover this city is economical, fast and scenic. Hotels and motels in Boston ma can be found all over the city. Staying at one of the discount hotels is a way for the cruise traveler to stretch their budget to enjoy the highlights of the city.

Boston retains a pleasant small town atmosphere, with old streets in Charlestown which still feature old style gas lamps and charming brick sidewalks. Wander around Back Ray in downtown Boston where streets are lined with Victorian brownstone houses and lovely hotels. Head to Beacon Street for a glimps of the “Cheers Bar”, which modelled in the 80s sitcom.

History lovers will enjoy the Freedom Trail. Take your time and walk and learn more about historic facts. Starting point for the Freedom Trail is Boston Common, one of America’s most beautiful parks. Interesting is a visit to the 18th century Faneuil Hall, located in the centre of the city next to Quince Market. It’s the birthplace of democracy. Couple blocks away is Long Wharf, one of the most popular docks of the Port of Boston.

From the seaport you can take exciting whalewatching trips, smooth sailing or boat tours to the harbor islands and romantic evening cruises. Fun for families with kids is a visit to the USS Constitution Museum ship. See the crew dressed in historical navy clothing and learn what life was like at sea over 200 years ago.

Shopping — for shopping enthusiasts, Boston is well known for its abundant shops and boutiques. Newbury Street, also known as the “5th Avenue” of Boston, is one of the finest shopping areas of the city.

Cambridge — nearby Cambridge across the Charles River is home to Harvard University, the USA’s oldest and most prestigious university, and The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) private research university.

Pre or Post cruise lodging with (free) airport and shuttle service to the pier

Some hotels offer a complimentary transport shuttle service to/and from the airport, and to the Black Falcon cruise ship terminal.

Downtown Boston hotel rooms are a bit more expensive but are a cheap cab ride to the pier. If Boston sightseeing is not part of your plan, a good bet is to find a well priced hotel or affordable motel stay along route 128/95, 90, 93 or 495 for juts one night.

The next morning you can drive into the city for boarding your cruise ship.

No need to fret if you need tape or a stapler — the friendly baggage handlers will assist you. Remember to show appreciation by tipping them before parking or returning your car.

Simplify your cruise parking experience at the Flynn Cruiseport in the Seaport District near Boston Harbor. Park easily at Congress Street parking or take a free shuttle from your hotel. Brooklyn Cruise Terminal (Red Hook Section, New York)

Discover the best cruise ports in New York. Brooklyn and Cape Liberty (in Bayonne, New Jersey) take center stage, with Manhattan playing a supporting role. As a premier cruise destination, New York offers voyages to Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, and beyond.

Parking at Brooklyn Cruise Port may seem challenging, but a constant flow of arrivals and departures keeps things moving. While the $45 daily fee offers stunning views of the Statue of Liberty, other convenient options are available, such as private taxis, Uber, shuttles, or the subway. For a unique experience, consider taking the train from Penn Station or Grand Central Station.

Sailing From Here: Cunard , MSC Cruises, Princess

Points Of Interest: Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Prospect Park

Fun Fact: Per CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association), most cruise passengers arrive in a port city a day in advance and spend nearly $400 per person on food, hotel, and transportation.

Cape Liberty Cruise Port (New Jersey)

Parking is slightly cheaper here than at Brooklyn’s cruise port and there are overflow lots during the busy season with free shuttles available. Cars run $30 per day and RVs $60.

Sailing From Here: Celebrity , Royal Caribbean

Points Of Interest: Teardrop Memorial, Hudson River Waterfront, The Mills at Jersey Gardens (outlet mall)

Port Of Baltimore (Maryland)

I find the Baltimore cruise port one of the most accessible places to embark in the country. Parking is $15 daily (cashless) and you can walk to the terminal after parking. There is also RV parking for $30–$40 daily, depending on the size of your rig. Royal Caribbean and Carnival both offer shuttles to and from BWI airport.

Sailing From Here: Carnival, Disney, Norwegian, Princess , Royal Caribbean

Points Of Interest: National Aquarium, Inner Harbor, Maryland Zoo, Fort McHenry National Monument & Historic Shrine

South Atlantic/Florida

Welcome to the sunniest region in the world, where cruise passengers flock in droves! With state-of-the-art terminals and buzzing activity, this destination offers an incredible array of choices. However, be prepared to master the art of patience, as navigating through crowds can be challenging. As someone who has been on 54 cruises, I can attest that more than half of my voyages have departed from these ports.

Port Canaveral (Orlando, Florida)

Prepare to be amazed! Contrary to popular belief, getting to Port Orlando (also known as Port Canaveral) requires a 48-minute drive, as Orlando is not on the coast. Despite the distance and expense of transportation (an Uber is $98), Port Orlando remains the country’s busiest and most powerful cruise port. Your best option is to take the cruise shuttle from Orlando (airport or hotel) to save the hassle of getting there, traffic, and parking fees. If you decide to drive, however, keep in mind that parking costs $17 per day, including RVs.

Sailing From Here: Carnival, Disney , MSC Cruises, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean

Points Of Interest: Kennedy Space Center , Exploration Tower, Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum (in Orlando), Disney, Universal, Lake Eola Park, Harry P. Leu Gardens

Port Of Miami (Florida)

Discover the colossal cruise port just minutes away from Fort Lauderdale. PortMiami is a bustling hub, welcoming an impressive average of 12 cruise ships daily and 4.1 million passengers annually. Boasting 11 cruise terminals, it is the second busiest cruise port in the country.

While you can park at the port for $22 a day, I highly recommend avoiding the chaos by opting for Uber or a hotel shuttle. With my 10 years of experience living in Florida, I found navigating the port’s parking confusing and lacking proper signage. Thankfully, there are much simpler alternatives to reaching your cruise ship.

But fear not! Despite the initial challenges, PortMiami (known as the Cruise Capital of the World ) is renowned for its efficiency and seamless operation. Like a finely tuned machine, they ensure a hassle-free experience from start to finish. Indulge in the modern marvel that is PortMiami and embark on your dream cruise effortlessly.

Pro Tip: It is important to park in the garage that coincides with your terminal letter (example: Cruise Terminal B — Multi-Level Garage B); though terminals F, G, and V all use Garage G.

Sailing From Here: Azamara Club, Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, MSC Cruises , Norwegian, Oceania, Regent Seven Seas , Royal Caribbean, Seabourn, Virgin Voyages

Points Of Interest: Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, Bayside Marketplace, Wynwood Walls, Little Havana, Jungle Island

Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale, Florida)

This one may throw you for a loop since Port Everglades is the cruise port you’ll want for departing out of Fort Lauderdale. It is only 3 miles from FLL/Hollywood Airport and 25 miles north of Miami International Airport. Uber or Lyft is your best bet and is relatively inexpensive. Secure parking at Port Everglades (4,000 spaces) runs $15 per day or $19 for oversized vehicles.

Sailing From Here: Carnival, Celebrity, Crystal Cruises , Cunard, Disney, Holland America, Princess, Royal Caribbean, Seabourn, Silversea, Viking Ocean

Points Of Interest: Las Olas Boulevard and Riverwalk, Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, Everglades Holiday Park

Port Tampa Bay (Florida)

Tampa is a treat to sail out of, as the cruise terminal and port are well-marked and laid out. It is secure and monitored 24/7. Parking is $16 per day, or you can use Uber or Lyft for getting dropped off or picked up. Tampa International Airport is 21 minutes from the Port Tampa Bay Cruise Terminal or 90 minutes from Orlando (MCO).

Sailing From Here: Carnival, Royal Caribbean

Points Of Interest: Busch Gardens, The Florida Aquarium, Historic Ybor City

Port Of San Juan (Puerto Rico)

Discover why San Juan, Puerto Rico, is the ultimate destination for incredible cruise lines. From its advantageous Atlantic Ocean location to potential cost savings, this place is a true gem. If you’re planning a trip, I recommend arriving early and staying overnight to avoid airline hiccups.

While some hotels provide free shuttle services, taxis are readily available for a quick 8-mile journey to the cruise port. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to set sail from Old San Juan, which is a vacation before the cruise vacation begins.

Gulf Of Mexico

Discover hidden gems and unbeatable prices on Gulf of Mexico cruises! Escape the crowds and embark on an adventure from Galveston, New Orleans, and Mobile. Immerse yourself in vibrant cities and soak up the magic of the gulf. Don’t miss your chance to experience the best-kept secrets of these charming destinations! I plan to include these three embarkation ports in my cruising future over the next few months.

Mobile Alabama Cruise Terminal (Alabama)

While Carnival is the only cruise line that sails from Mobile, it is an excellent option for those seeking a quick vacation option between Texas and Florida. Parking will run you $18 daily, though the closest airport is Pensacola, Florida, an hour away. This is definitely a drive to the cruise port destination. Check out the Mobile Carnival Museum or the USS Alabama in your free time.

Port Of New Orleans (NOLA, Louisiana)

A boatload of ships departs the Port of NOLA, making it the 6th busiest cruise port in the country. It is in the heart of the city with a plethora of amazing things to see and do. It is also a port for the three major river cruises (my bucket list!), which adds a feature most cruise ports don’t offer. Parking runs $25 daily at the Erato and Julia Street terminals.

Points Of Interest: New Orleans City Park, Jackson Square, Mardi Gras World, French Quarter, St. Louis Cathedral, National WWII Museum

Port Of Galveston (Texas)

Discover Galveston — the vibrant heart of Texas and the state’s sole major port. With its convenient location, you’ll have easy access to all the city offers. Enjoy hassle-free parking for just $18 per day (discounts available for prepaying) and take advantage of the close proximity to the cruise terminal from the lots.

Port of Galveston’s only downside? The nearest major airport is 40 minutes away in Houston. However, worry not! Numerous shuttle services are available to whisk you directly to the cruise terminal.

Fun Fact: It is hard to believe that 2.2 million cruise passengers use this terminal annually.

The cruise ports on the West Coast of the United States offer a wide range of fabulous cities, diverse weather, and opportunities for sailing around the area, trans-Pacific crossings, and specialty cruises.

Port Of San Diego (California)

Experience the beauty and convenience of the exceptional Port of San Diego . Getting to the port is a breeze, with various parking options and a convenient cruise ship shuttle from the airport. And that’s only some of it — many cruise lines even offer a complimentary pre-night hotel room.

I personally loved taking advantage of this option before setting sail from the Port of San Diego. Book your cruise now and let the cruise line shuttle take care of the rest. San Diego’s weather is exceptional year-round and the flights are relatively quicker and smoother than in other parts of California. I call this a stress-free cruise port.

Port Of Los Angeles (California)

Discover the luxury and cruise lines variety at World Cruise Center at Port of Los Angeles (actually in San Pedro, California). Arriving at this massive port is a breeze, whether driving a car or using transportation options like shuttles, taxis, or Uber. Parking is $20 per day.

Avoid the high cost of taxis and enjoy a ride from LAX for just $40 with a rideshare service. From John Wayne Airport, expect to pay around $60, though nearly $100 for a taxi. Embark on your dream cruise effortlessly and at a great price from the World Cruise Center.

Port Of Long Beach (California)

Discover the convenient and stress-free Port of Long Beach , just a stone’s throw away from the Los Angeles cruise port. As a cruise port owned by Carnival Corporation , it offers an easier and more accessible experience than LA. Set against the backdrop of the majestic Queen Mary , this gem provides an alternative West Coast sailing experience away from the bustling cities. Located just 23 miles from LAX, you can park your car for only $23 per day. Plus, ample parking options exist for oversized vehicles adjacent to the covered garage.

Points Of Interest: Knott’s Berry Farm , Long Beach Museum of Art, Aquarium of the Pacific

Port Of San Francisco (California)

For a city this big, I was surprised that the Port of San Francisco was not busier and bigger, but honestly, it is not one bit intimidating. Parking runs around $18 per day and there are many options for getting there, including bus, Uber, Lyft, and shuttles.

Points Of Interest: Alcatraz Island, Pier 39, Fisherman’s Wharf, Golden Gate Park

Port Of Seattle (Washington)

The cruise port of Seattle is your gateway to Alaska , so hopefully in your lifetime, you’ll explore this one for yourself. There are two terminals (Piers 91 and 66), with parking running $22–$27 per day, though shuttles and Lyft are the most popular ways to get there. The airport is 40 minutes away.
