He not only shared about the history, culture, and religion of Bo-Kaap, but also provided personal anecdotes and stories about himself, his friends, and family that made it feel personable and relate-able. Not forgetting a positive outlook and vision for the future of the community in the Bo-Kaap. Well done for condensing hundreds of years of rich history into a concise tour within a certain timeframe. Cape Malay Cooking in the Bo-Kaap

Cape Malay Cooking in the Bo-Kaap

We start our day with a cup of coffee at Truth Coffee, one of the Cape’s most famous micro coffee roasters.

IMG_4979

We use this as a base to start discussing the Apartheid History of our country.   In order to understand our people – you need to understand the history of our country.

DSITRICT 6 MUSEUEM INSIDE

Next we visit the District 6 Museum – this is a small apartheid museum which is home to the memories of the residents of District 6 – an area on the edge of Cape Town where over 60 000 people were forcefully removed.

We then do a short ramble through the city through to the Bo-Kaap area.

bo-kaap good photo of Ciapinni street

The Bo-Kaap represents the only area in the city of Cape Town where the Cape Malay community were not forcefully removed. It is a bright and colourful area that is one of the most photographed places in Cape Town.

We enjoy a walk around the area and visit Atlas spices (which is the main spice shop), before heading into a home of one of the ladies in the area for a hands on cooking class.

The Bo-Kaap is beautiful and most people would not leave Cape Town without taking a photograph of the houses. However, the opportunity for you to interact with the people in an area is always limited. As such this is wonderfully unique opportunity to spend some time with the ladies in the community.

Gamidah Cooking

During your visit you will:

  • Learn to make rooti’s from scratch
  • Fold samoosas and cook them
  • Cook Chilli bites
  • Learn how to make a traditional Cape Malay curry
  • Sit down and enjoy the food you have made for lunch
  • Enjoy an interesting cup of cardamom tea at the end of the meal with a delicious koesister (local doughnut only found in the Cape area – made with dry spices, dipped in syrup and then rolled in dry coconut.

2009 June 025

After lunch we enjoy a walk around the Bo-Kaap to view and photograph the beautiful brightly coloured houses and timing dependent, we will pop into some of the shops in the community.

Timing:      9am to 14h30

What we need to know:   Please advise us if you have any dietary concerns or issues – this is critical information for a cooking tour!

Note – we will collect and drop you off at the end of the tour.   We can also drop you anywhere centrally – e.g.  Table Mountain, Camps Bay or the Waterfront

Cost:    Please simply email us and tell us how many there are of you, when you would like to do the tour and where you are staying.   We will get back to you with a costing for the tour.

EXTEND TO A FULL DAY TOUR TO GET MORE OF A TASTE OF THE CAPE: Extend your tour to a FULL DAY TOUR – Note that it is recommended to combine the cooking morning with an afternoon exploring the city.

As the Bo-Kaap is literally in the city, it makes great sense for you to head into the city for a walking tour with us in the afternoon.   We aim to make sure that you taste more of Cape Town through our walks.   We explore the history, the people and the cultures of our city.

This is completely flexible to your interests – so tell us what they are!

Ideas for the afternoon would be:

A walking tour to explore the oldest part of the city:   We explore Bree Street – the new foodie and artisanal hub of the city.  Over 40 establishments have opened on this street alone in the last year.   We walk through to Green Market Square (the oldest square in the city) and through to the Company Gardens region of the city.  The Company Gardens is the oldest part of the city.    It is here that the first fruit and vegetable gardens were grown.   Today this area is home to our parliament, our museums and a wonderful garden of exotic plants that adds a wonderful green belt to the inner city.

Head up Table Mountain if you have not made it up yet!

Spend the Afternoon tasting wines in the Constantia Wine region (renowned for its sauvignon blanc’s, the sweet Vin de Constance and some excellent reds)

Timing:      9am to 5pm

Cost:      Please simply email us and tell us how many there are of you, when you would like to do the tour and where you are staying. We will get back to you with a costing for the tour.

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris

Team Member Headshot

By Devryn Panaino

Safari Travel Planner

Your adventure in the colorful Bo-Kaap starts with a photographic walking tour before enticing you into the kitchen to cook a traditional Cape Malay meal.

The Bo-Kaap at the foot of Signal Hill in central Cape Town is known for its photogenic, brightly colored houses and cobbled streets. This is the spiritual home of the Cape’s Muslim community. There are many Muslim kramats (shrines) and beautiful mosques, including the first Muslim mosque in South Africa, but there is a blend of cultures.

Many residents are descendants of slaves from Malaysia, Indonesia, and various African countries who were imported to the Cape of Good Hope by the Dutch in the 16th and 17th centuries. The area is often called the Cape Malay Quarter.

Cape Malay Cuisine makes use of aromatic spices and herbs. Over 300 years ago, the enslaved Malays brought fragrance and flavor to the Cape and their foods, combining fruit, vegetables, and meat with spices.

Embark on a two-hour walking tour around the Bo-Kaap with your own personal photo coach. You’ll photograph colourful street scenes and enjoy panoramic views of Table Mountain, Cape Town, and Table Bay. From beginners needing advice on camera settings to advanced photographers seeking technical photographic skills, the Bo-Kaap is a photographic delight.

After your photographic walking tour, the scent of aromatic spices will lead you to the kitchen of one of the local homes, where you’ll learn to cook, photograph, and enjoy a traditional Cape Malay meal.

About Bo-Kaap Cooking Tour

Zainie Misbach has lived in the Bo Kaap all her life, which means that a walking tour with her around the neighbourhood is akin to experiencing the place like a local.

The Bo-Kaap is well-known for its colourful houses, numerous mosques, narrow cobbled streets and the atmosphere of a solid, Muslim community, even if the area is now more popular with students and expats.

The walkabout is just long enough to soak up the atmosphere, allowing plenty of time to return to Zainie's home for a hands-on cooking class, where the focus is on spices (acquired en route at the local spice shop), dhaltjies (chilli bites), samoosas, flat bread, rootis, babotie, and how to mix masala.

This is a wonderful way to learn the Cape Malay culture through its food. Particularly as Zainie will feel like an old friend – she's appeared on so many TV programmes (Pasella, KykNet, Jou Show met Emo) that you'll be convinced you recognise her from somewhere.

The Malay people are descendants of slaves and exiled dissidents, sent to South Africa by the Dutch from their various outposts, during the 17th and 18th centuries. Their spices and cooking have heavily influenced South African food .

The Bo-Kaap Cooking Tour starts at the Bokaap Museum , across the road from the Rose Corner Café, followed by a quick pitstop at the local spice shop, a stroll through the colourful streets and then on to Zainie's kitchen.

By the time you have listened to her stories, scrabbled to write down a couple of her local recipes (although she does give you a recipe booklet), and sampled her food, you'll have a much better idea of what it is to cook Cape Malay cuisine .

Trip Summary

The Bo-Kaap Cooking Tour takes you on a voyage into the life, food and culture of the Cape Malay's in Bo-Kaap whilst offering you a hands-on, practical lesson on how to cook like a real Cape Malay 'Auntie'!  Learn how to fold Samoosa's and mix Masala for that perfect pot of Cape Malay Curry!

You will be hosted at Zainie's home, where you will not only learn secret cooking techniques, but also get an insight into daily life in the Bo-Kaap.  The workshop ends with lunch where you can share your experiences with the group whilst indulging in a mouth-watering traditional meal.

Bo-Kaap is situated strategically at the foot of signal hill in the heart of Cape Town, and is home to several historic and Islamic sites. Bo-Kaap with its cobbled roads and colourful houses has preserved a people and culture through community, the practice of religion and tradition.

Food plays a big role in Bo-Kaap culture as once a year you will find the streets littered with children carrying plates of food and cakes for neighbours to sample, as part of 'Ramadaan' (a month-long fast).  Other activities include regular food bazaars and markets where residents can show off their specialties!

Cape Malay cuisine has had a major influence in South African food and some might consider it SA's National Cuisine!

Cape Malay cuisine is spicy and aromatic,  yet mild.  Prominent ingredients are Fresh Coriander (Dhania/Cilantro), Garlic, Ginger, Curry Leaves and an array of spices. Its  origins can be dated back to cooking pots of the 17th and 18th century exiled dissidents and slaves brought to the Cape from the Dutch East Indies. While there are recognisable Asian elements, Cape Malay cooking has undergone a considerable degree of adaptation to suit local conditions and ingredient availability.

Start Time: 10h30. Duration: 3.5 hours. Price: R 910 p.p.    Classes are available weekly on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays only.

Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

The most beautiful of all the world's cities - lady Moscow invites you out on a date!
