Missouri's Warm Springs Ranch is the Home of the Budweiser Clydesdales

The world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales have become synonymous with Super Bowl commercials for the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Company. But the history of these horses and the St. Louis, Missouri brewing company dates back to the prohibition.

In celebration of the repeal of prohibition in 1933, Clydesdale  horses pulled a beer wagon carrying one of the first cases of post-prohibition beer down the streets in St. Louis. August Anheuser Busch recognized the potential in using the horses for marketing purposes and used the Clydesdales to deliver beer via beer wagon on a tour around the country.

The Clydesdales have made appearances in Super Bowl commercials for Budweiser beer nearly every year since 1986. The official home of the Budweiser Clydesdales is a brick and stained-glass stable on the 100-acre Anheuser-Busch Brewery complex in St. Louis. But the horses are bred on Warm Springs Ranch , a 300-acre property in Boonville, Missouri, near Columbia, and 110 miles from Kansas City.

The breeding farm includes a foaling barn, veterinary lab and 10 pastures. The farm houses around 70 horses, from foals, to mares, to Clydesdale stallions. The best part? You can actually visit the farm.

With reservations, you can take a must-see VIP tour through the 25,000-square-foot breeding facility where you can learn all about the Budweiser Clydesdales. Guided Walking Tours will let you interact with the Clydesdales, take photos, sample free beer and visit the gift shop for fun Clydesdale gifts. These tours will cost you $15/person.

For a more private VIP experience, you'll get a behind-the-scenes look by interacting with a Clydesdale handler while you visit the foaling area. A custom-built vehicle will take you around the property. These private tours will cost $500 and accommodate up to 16 guests. Both tours will show you the Clydesdale harnesses and explain the amount of skill that goes into being a Budweiser Clydesdale Hitch Driver. The ranch also boasts an exciting holiday lights display in the winter, which was made into a drive-thru experience in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Visit the Warm Springs Ranch website to learn more about how to book your tour right in the heart of Missouri. This trip is an absolute must for any Budweiser (and Clydesdale) fans.

Spring break idea: Visit Warm Springs Ranch in Boonville to see baby Budweiser Clydesdales

In early February, the official breeding facility of the Budweiser Clydesdales announced that four colts (male horses) had been born, so we recommend going early in the spring while the babies are still, well, babies.

You’ve seen them pulling the beer wagon around the field at Busch Stadium on Opening Day and you’ve seen their home at Grant’s Farm, but have you ever seen a Budweiser Clydesdale when it’s still a (relatively) tiny baby? Make it a priority this year. If you’re looking for a fun spring break activity, consider a day trip to Warm Springs Ranch ( 25270 Highway 98, Boonville ), the official breeding and training facility of the Budweiser Clydesdales, just outside of Columbia. There, on the picturesque property, you’ll get to peep the babies, and you’ll get to experience the big guys like you never have before—frolicking in the ranch’s pastures, a thrill for children and adults alike. Kids will also love learning about the care and feeding of the horses and the photo op, and parents can enjoy a complimentary beer. Witnessing the commitment it takes—Warm Springs Ranch employees must be on hand day or night to deliver new foals—to continue the legacy of the Budweiser Clydesdales will leave you with a new appreciation for the animals and their handlers.

Guided tours of Warm Springs Ranch start back up March 25, just in time for spring break. Make sure to book a reservation in advance  online.

What's the connection between Anheuser-Busch and the Clydesdale?

Clydesdales are a breed of draft horse (meaning they can pull heavy loads) that originated in Scotland near the River Clyde, hence the name. Clydesdales are measured in “hands,” and each horse measures an average of 17–18 hands—or about 6 feet—tall and weighs about 2,000 pounds. Clydesdales eat a whopping 20 quarts of grain and 50 pounds of hay and drink 35 gallons of water daily.

The Clydesdales became a symbol of Budweiser in 1933, when August A. Busch, Jr. and Adolphus Busch III gave their father, August A. Busch, Sr., six of the horses to celebrate the end of Prohibition. The St. Louis beer family sent a second group of Clydesdales to New York to mark the occasion, and the large horses drew such a crowd as they made their way to the Empire State Building that the Busches realized the marketing power of the equines. Soon they began sending hitches to other states.

Budweiser Clydesdale prospects have to complete years of training to be eligible to join the prestigious traveling teams, called hitches. Only male horses that meet certain criteria—their blaze, coat, tail, mane, and stocking colors have to be just right—can join a hitch.

In 1950, the Dalmatian was introduced as the Clydesdales’ mascot, to mark the opening of the Anheuser-Busch Newark Brewery. The horses first appeared in the Super Bowl in 1975 and have been staples of sometimes-tear-jerking Budweiser commercials aired during the games.

What is Warm Springs Ranch and what is a tour like?

Located in Boonville, about a two-hour drive from St. Louis, Warm Springs Ranch is a 300-acre ranch and the official breeding and training facility for the Budweiser Clydesdales. More than 70 Clydesdales live on the property, and each spring, the farm welcomes new foals to the herd.

There are three different tours at Warm Springs Ranch: the Guided Walking Tour, the Clydesdale VIP Tour, and the Wheels & Reins Excursion. The Guided Walking Tour starts at $15 per person, and your time at Warm Springs starts with a complimentary beer and a photo op with one of the Clydesdales. From there, you’ll see the mare/stallion barn, the foaling barn, the vet lab, the shoeing area, the antique beer wagon, the massive trailer the horses use to travel the country in style, and one of the pastures where the Clydesdales spend time in the sunshine. The highlight is definitely seeing the new baby horses with their mothers. You might even catch one or two nursing or napping. Note that this tour largely takes place under shelter. If you choose to go later in the summer, it’s a nice shield from the sun, and fans keep the barns pretty cool, too.

From there, the cost of tours ramps up considerably, but if you're a Clydesdale nut, you might want to drop $500 for the VIP Tour for you and up to 15 of your friends. You’ll ride around on a trailer to tour the pastures, interacting with the Clydesdales along the way. The tour also includes a look at the foaling barn, a meet-and-greet with a Clydesdale handler, and a visit with a baby Clydesdale.

Equine fanatics can spend $1,000 on the Wheels & Reins Excursion, during which you’ll help groom and harness the horses and hitch them to a training vehicle. You’ll then ride through part of the ranch and then guide the horses back to the barn.

When is the best time to visit?

In early February, Warm Springs Ranch announced that four colts (male horses) had been born, so we recommend going early in the spring while the babies are still, well, babies. When we visited in late June, however, they were still adorable and considerably smaller than the adults. At birth, baby Clydesdales weigh an average of 150 pounds, measure about 3 feet tall, and start walking just hours after being born.

Anheuser-Busch's Warm Springs Ranch Opens for Season

Anheuser-Busch's Warm Springs Ranch Opens for Season

On Saturday, March 22, Anheuser-Busch will open the doors of Warm Springs Ranch, the Budweiser Clydesdales' breeding farm, for its sixth season. The farm will give visitors the exclusive opportunity to get up close and personal with the Budweiser Clydesdales where they live.

Warm Springs Ranch has had a prominent role in Budweiser's Super Bowl commercials for the past two years. This year's top-ranked Budweiser Super Bowl commercial, “Puppy Love”, was inspired by real-life interactions handlers at the ranch have seen between the Budweiser Clydesdales and golden Labrador puppies. In addition, the incredibly popular 2013 Budweiser Super Bowl commercial “Brotherhood” was partially filmed at Warm Springs Ranch.

New this year, Warm Springs Ranch is bringing a familiar fixture from St. Louis to the farm in Boonville. The 15-foot, 1,600-pound classic red “W” from the historic Budweiser neon sign, previously perched on top of the Anheuser-Busch Brewery in St. Louis, will now be displayed just inside the main gates at Warm Springs Ranch.

Guests can expect a memorable and unique Budweiser Clydesdales experience when visiting Warm Springs Ranch, including a chance to see Hope, the young star of “Brotherhood”. Now just over one year old, Hope has made her home at Warm Springs Ranch among 70 other Budweiser Clydesdales. During the 2014 foaling season, the farm expects more than 25 baby Clydesdales to be born, including more than 20 this spring.

“The Budweiser Clydesdales are a worldwide symbol of Anheuser-Busch's heritage and commitment to quality,” said John Soto, supervisor of Warm Springs Ranch. “Being able to give people unparalleled access to these majestic animals is a one-of-a-kind experience only Budweiser can provide. We look forward to welcoming families from all over our region to get an insider's look at where these beloved animals are born, train, and live.”

The farm sits on 300-plus acres of land, allowing the Budweiser Clydesdales plenty of room to exercise and roam. Warm Springs Ranch features a 25,000-square-foot breeding barn with a veterinary lab and 10 pastures, each with a customized, walk-in shelter and free-flowing water dispensers. Dedicated staff is on-site around the clock to ensure the baby Clydesdales are welcomed into the world in comfort and safety.

“This year marks the 81st anniversary of one of the most iconic symbols for Anheuser-Busch, the Budweiser Clydesdales,” said Jeff Knapper, general manager for Clydesdales operations. “The Clydesdales have been an integral part of Anheuser-Busch's heritage since 1933, and their strength and majesty symbolize Budweiser's quality and team spirit. It is truly special to see how these magnificent horses spend their early years and later grow to become one of the world's most recognized animals.”

Warm Springs Ranch offers twice-daily tours every day except for Wednesday, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The tour costs $10 per person and lasts one-and-a-half hours. In addition, the ranch offers a VIP tour once a day, allowing guests to climb aboard a custom-built vehicle to enjoy a private excursion on the 300-plus acres and meet with a Budweiser Clydesdale handler. This VIP tour also includes time in the pastures with the Budweiser Clydesdales, plus samples of Anheuser-Busch beers for adult guests 21 and older at the end of the tour and a photo opportunity with a world famous Budweiser Clydesdales. A VIP tour costs $500 and can accommodate up to 16 guests. To reserve a tour spot (reservations are required) or for more information, visit www.warmspringsranch.com .

In 2013, Warm Springs Ranch welcomed more than 24,000 visitors from around the world, up more than 33 percent from the year before, and also welcomed 32 baby Clydesdales.
