Burt Bacharach obituary
Songwriter whose hits, including I Say a Little Prayer and Walk on By, became classics of easy-listening pop
Burt Bacharach, master of pop songwriting, dies aged 94
- A lifetime of magic moments: Burt Bacharach in pictures
Few songwriters have been able to enjoy hits across six decades, as well as the bonus of a dramatic revival of interest in their work during the later years of their careers. Burt Bacharach , who has died aged 94, could claim both.
With his writing partner Hal David , Bacharach launched himself into the front rank of pop songwriters with a brilliant streak of hits for Dionne Warwick during the 1960s, beginning in 1962 with Don’t Make Me Over and proceeding through (among others) Walk on By , Anyone Who Had a Heart , I Say a Little Prayer , Trains and Boats and Planes , and Do You Know the Way to San Jose . All became standards in Bacharach’s chosen pop-easy-listening genre , their apparent simplicity concealing his mastery of different rhythms and metres.
He had soaked up the music of the jazz big bands and bebop, and also studied with the French composer Darius Milhaud, who urged his pupil to “never ever feel embarrassed or discomforted by a melody that people can remember or whistle”. Bacharach’s melodies were not only memorable but also frequently suffused with melancholy and regret. His gifts as an arranger allowed him to exploit all the resources of an orchestra with precision, and his use of plaintive “Bacharach trumpets” became a distinctive trademark.
Meanwhile he was turning out imperishable classics for a string of different artists. Tom Jones never particularly liked What’s New, Pussycat? , the Oscar-nominated theme from the 1965 film of the same name, but acknowledged its enduring popularity. Bacharach and David’s Wishin’ and Hopin’ gave Dusty Springfield a No 6 hit in the US in 1964, shortly before she reached No 3 in the UK with their song I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself.

Herb Alpert topped the US chart with the winsome ballad This Guy’s in Love With You , Jackie DeShannon did likewise with What the World Needs Now Is Love , and BJ Thomas was the lucky recipient of Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head , from the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (which brought Bacharach and David Oscars for best theme song and best original score). Bacharach was an Oscar-winner for a third time in 1982, with Arthur’s Theme from the film Arthur.
The son of Bert Bacharach, a sports star turned nationally syndicated newspaper columnist, and Irma Freeman, an artist and songwriter, Burt was born in Kansas City, Missouri. The family moved to Kew Gardens in Queens, New York, when he was a child. At the insistence of his mother, Burt studied the cello, drums and piano. His ears were opened by the innovative harmonies and melodies of jazz musicians of the day such as Thelonious Monk and Charlie Parker , and he played with several jazz combos before enrolling in music courses at the Mannes School of Music, New York, and at McGill University in Montreal.
He served in the US army (1950-52), and while acting as a dance band arranger in Germany he met the singer Vic Damone . Back in the US after his discharge, Bacharach worked as piano accompanist to Damone and to numerous other artists on the club circuit. One of them was the actor and singer Paula Stewart, whom he married in 1953.
He was fortunate to fall into one of the all-time great songwriting partnerships with David, whom he first met at the New York songwriting beehive, the Brill Building (also to be the home of other renowned songwriting duos including Leiber & Stoller, Goffin & King and Pomus & Shuman). David had been writing hits for such luminaries as Sarah Vaughan and Frank Sinatra since the late 40s. Bacharach and David scored their first big commercial coup when the country singer Marty Robbins took their song The Story of My Life into the US Top 20 in 1957. A cover version by Michael Holliday reached No 1 in the UK the following year, and Perry Como brought them another smash with his recording of Magic Moments , which spent eight weeks at No 1 in Britain.
After the breakdown of his marriage (he and Stewart divorced in 1958), Bacharach travelled to Europe to become pianist and bandleader for Marlene Dietrich , a role he would sustain until 1964. By 1961 he was back in New York, and wrote some material for the Drifters, as well as the Chuck Jackson hit Any Day Now before resuming his partnership with David. Their song (The Man Who Shot) Liberty Valance , inspired by the John Wayne / James Stewart western, became a US No 4 hit for Gene Pitney in 1962. Pitney did better still with the duo’s composition Only Love Can Break a Heart , which reached No 2 later that year.
Then came Bacharach and David’s historic hook-up with Warwick. She was a member of the Drifters’ backing group, the Gospelaires, and the songwriters invited her to make some demo recordings at their office at the publishers Famous Music, in the Brill Building. One of them was for Make It Easy on Yourself, which became a big hit for Jerry Butler . David recalled: “She said, ‘I thought that was my song!’ We said, ‘No, you just made a demo’. She was really very hurt and angry. Then we realised here’s this wonderful singer and we’re using her to make demos – she could be a star!”
So it proved, and the hits with Warwick became their calling card. They wrote and produced 20 American Top 40 hits for her over the ensuing decade, including seven that reached the Top 10. One of these songs, I Say a Little Prayer, also gave Aretha Franklin a US Top 10 hit and her biggest solo hit in Britain, where it reached No 4. Throughout the 60s anything Bacharach and David touched became commercial gold dust. They wrote film scores for What’s New, Pussycat? and Casino Royale, the theme song for Alfie, and scored the successful Broadway musical Promises, Promises, whose title song provided another hit for Warwick and spun off a chartbuster for Bacharach himself with I’ll Never Fall in Love Again .
The writers always had a soft spot for the UK, probably because so many British-based artists had No 1 hits with their material, including Cilla Black – whose version of Anyone Who Had a Heart was her breakthrough hit – Sandie Shaw , the Walker Brothers and Frankie Vaughan .
The Carpenters ushered in the 70s with (They Long to Be) Close to You , a US No 1 which also reached No 6 in the UK, but although Bacharach’s 1971 album (called just Burt Bacharach) became a sought-after collector’s item, the decade would prove disappointing. In 1973 Bacharach and David collaborated on a new musical version of the 1937 film Lost Horizon, but it was a commercial disaster that prompted angry splits between Bacharach, David and Warwick, and involved them in a spate of lawsuits. The writers parted company after a disagreement over royalties. Bacharach’s second marriage, to the actor Angie Dickinson, whom he had married in 1965, began to come apart, although they did not divorce until 1980.
It was not until the early 80s that Bacharach’s magic touch returned, when he won the Oscar for best original song for the chart-topping theme from the film Arthur, which he had also scored. One of its co-writers was the lyricist Carole Bayer Sager, whom Bacharach married the following year. The couple went on to write Making Love for Roberta Flack and Heartlight for Neil Diamond . In 1986, Bacharach enjoyed one of his best ever years, achieving two US No 1s with That’s What Friends Are for , recorded by Warwick with Elton John , Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder as a charitable fundraiser for Aids, and the Patti LaBelle/Michael McDonald recording of the lachrymose On My Own .
In 1991 his marriage to Bayer Sager ended, and two years later he married Jane Hansen. In a 2015 interview, Bacharach – who was nicknamed “the playboy of the western world” during the 60s – admitted: “I didn’t mean to hurt anybody, but when you wind up being married four times, there are a lot of bodies strewn in your wake.”
During the 90s, Bacharach and David reunited with Warwick for Sunny Weather Lover , from her album Friends Can Be Lovers, and Bacharach wrote songs for James Ingram and Earth, Wind & Fire. In 1995 he co-wrote God Give Me Strength with Elvis Costello for Allison Anders’ film about the Brill Building era, Grace of My Heart, and this resulted in the Costello-Bacharach album Painted from Memory (1998).
Bacharach’s contribution to pop history was acknowledged in a 1996 BBC documentary, Burt Bacharach – This Is Now, and he would find himself being hailed as an icon of cool by bands as varied as Oasis , REM , Massive Attack and the White Stripes . In 1997, an all-star cast including Costello, Warwick, Chrissie Hynde , Sheryl Crow and Luther Vandross banded together at the Hammerstein Ballroom, New York, for a serenade of Bacharach’s songs called One Amazing Night, and the Rhino label issued The Look of Love, a three-disc compilation of his music.
Bacharach’s profile received a huge boost from his appearances in all three of Mike Myers’s 60s-spoofing Austin Powers films. He earned an Oscar nomination for the song Walking Tall , his first collaboration with the lyricist Tim Rice , which was performed by Lyle Lovett on the soundtrack of Stuart Little (1999).
His 2005 album At This Time unusually found Bacharach writing lyrics as well as music and even provoking some controversy by touching on political themes. “All my life I’ve written love songs, and I’ve been non-political,” he said. “So it must be pretty significant that I suddenly have strong feelings of discomfort with the state of the world, and what our [US] administration is doing.” This did not prevent the album from winning the 2006 Grammy award for best pop instrumental album.
In 2008 he opened the BBC Electric Proms at the Roundhouse, in London, with Adele and Jamie Cullum among his supporting musicians. His autobiography, Anyone Who Had a Heart: My Life and Music , was published in 2013, and in 2015 he performed at the Glastonbury festival . He continued to tour past his 90th birthday, with concerts in the UK , US and Europe in 2018 and 2019 .
He returned to movie soundtrack composing with his score for A Boy Called Po (2016), featuring the theme song Dancing With Your Shadow. The film concerned a child with autism, and inspired Bacharach to write the music in memory of Nikki, his daughter from his second marriage, who took her own life in 2007 having been affected by Asperger syndrome. In 2018 his song Live to See Another Day was released, its proceeds donated to families affected by the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012.
In addition to his Oscars and six Grammy awards (plus a lifetime achievement award in 2008), he was awarded the Polar music prize in Stockholm in 2001. In 2011, the Library of Congress awarded Bacharach and David the Gershwin prize for popular song.
He is survived by Jane, their son, Oliver, and daughter, Raleigh, and another son, Cristopher, from his third marriage.

Burt Bacharach was born on the 12th of May 1928 in Kansas City, Missouri, USA. After over 60 years in show business he is the unarguable elder statesman of songwriting and pop music as a whole.
After a grand total of 127 Top 40 hits both in the UK and the US, few people have earned the title of “songwriter’s songwriter” quite like Burt Bacharach has. He’s been one of pop music’s true lifers, after over half a century in the music industry he’s still performing live night after night and has done so for years now. He might have fallen in and out of style over those years, but he never lost the respect of those with a love for good, honest songwriting. Elvis Costello, Ben Folds, Noel Gallagher and Chrissie Hynde have all sung the praises of his songs. Gene Pitney, Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield and The Carpenters have all had hits with them, and with a pedigree like that, few people would have the gall to argue with his touch as a hit-maker.
Bacharach’s story begins Kansas City, Missouri, where he was born. Soon afterwards his family moved up to New York City’s affluent Forest Hills neighbourhood, where he grew up. Bacharach was fascinated with music at an early age, developing a passion for jazz music as a teenager. A lot of his adolescence was spent getting into clubs with a fake I.D to see legends like Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker perform in the flesh, a site which inspired the young Bacharach to continue with his hated classical piano lessons all the same. These eventually paid off when he found himself studying at three immensely prestigious music colleges consecutively, and it was during his studies that he studied the music theory and Jazz harmony that would inform his songwriting, and by extension, pop music as a whole.
After graduating and following brief service in the army, Bacharach performed as a session and accompanying pianist before taking a job as the musical arranger and director for Marlene Dietrich. He stayed with Dietrich for a few years before he met the man that would change the course of his life in 1957, lyricist Hal David. They were introduced at New York City’s Brill Building, one of the hubs of songwriting at the time, and they began their partnership soon after that. In the same year their song “The Story Of My Life” had become a hit for Marty Robbins, peaking at number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100, and one of the most prolific careers in pop music was born. “The Story Of My Life” was followed up with Perry Como’s take on “Magic Moments” an even bigger hit for the pair, reaching number 4. Both of those songs hit number one in the U.K back to back, making Bacharach and David the first ever songwriters to have such an achievement.
Beyond this point, it’s hard to sum up Bacharach’s career without the use of a particularly large book. By the time the 60’s rolled around the songwriting pair had struck up a working relationship with Dionne Warwick, who over the next 20 years would have 22 Top 40, 12 Top 20 and nine Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 all written by Hall and Bacharach. As if that wasn’t enough, Aretha Franklin, The Beatles, The Shirelles and Jack Jones were all covering their numbers left and right, and that’s not even taking into account the amount of artists who didn’t make it into the history books having hits with their work. It was in the mid-to-late sixties that the pair got involved with cinema, having two of their most enduring hits, “What’s New, Pussycat?” and “Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head” come from the soundtrack to the film of the same name and Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid, respectively.
To call their 60’s “succesful” is to sell them slightly short, Bacharach and David had the kind of omnipresence that The Beatles had, with none of the outrageous fame. So comparatively the rest of their career feels kind of barren at first glance, but considering that it wasn’t until the mid-seventies that he started playing live at all, that’s saying quite a lot. However, it wasn’t without it’s downsides, the critical and commercial disaster of the film Lost Horizons split the duo up in a flurry of lawsuits and bad blood, and he had a comparatively quiet seventies. Come the 1980’s, and a personal and musical partnership with lyricist Carole Bayer Sager however, he had a second wind. Hits for the likes of Christopher Cross, Neil Diamond and Patti LaBelle followed, but the 90’, and the patronage of Noel Gallagher and Elvis Costello, would do what was thought to be impossible. They made him cool again.
Burt Bacharach is the kind of artist who hasn’t so much had a career as left a legacy, he’s still gracing us with his music night after night and for that we should be incredibly grateful. For a night of some of the greatest pop songs ever written, you can’t go wrong with Burt Bacharach.
Live reviews
There will never be another Burt Bacharach - those days are gone now and never to return. Songwriters of songs that are performed by others are mostly anonymous today. Although looking old and frail, Burt still exudes cool as he stepped on stage, accompanied by a full orchestra. He explains that he's only going to be playing his own songs tonight, no cover versions... Then the hits just keep coming. To write just one of those songs would be a lifetime achievement for most people, but Burt has song after song, and each one is a well-known classic. Burt explains that when he and Hal David started working at the Brill Building they didn't have a hit for 18 months. There were many talented people they worked along side, and some who gave up song writing after equally long periods of their songs being rejected. He sings a few songs himself - notably "Alfie" (he tells us this is his own personal favourite), but most of the vocal duties are capably handled by others.
There are so many songs in his repertoire that they are combined into medleys such as "early songs", "film music" etc just in order to be able to get through them. Burt explains that his appearance in the Austin Powers Movies he was in has increased his profile no end with his 7-year old followers. Around half way through, and I am struggling to think of a song of his that hasn't been played. Still the hits keep coming. Burt's youngest son joins him on stage for a couple of numbers. Then we reach the end with an audience participation version of "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" - and the Burt Bacharach - the Legend exits stage left. I leave with a selection of Burt's songs looping in my head...

saturday night saw a very special concert at vector arena. This was the end of a long world tour by the amazing burt Bacharach. With such a vast array of songs to his name , no concert could be long enough to cover half of them. howver Burt had put a brillaint selecttion of both medlies and full songs and even included some new works. his excellent singers, Donna Taylor, Josie James and John Pagano gave splendid renditions of well known numbers such as "Walk on Bye" "the Road top San Jose" and many others. The concert was varied and not just a grand musical experience. it also conveyed the humanity of a man who will go down as one of the greatest song writers of the twentieth century. His personal warmth came across with references to his life and a proud introduction to his son who played keyboards. there were many special moments and the concert had a number of one offs. One such where Burt invited a young woman, Jennie Cruse an Auckland singer sonmgwriter, to sit next to him while he sang "Close to You". His ability to not only perform but also to bond with the audience showed him to be really one of the true greats of entertainment. Truly a memorable performance.
Burt Bacharach is something of a dying breed on the music circuit as he crafted a career penning songs for other artists. This was a done thing by huge stars such as Whitney Houston yet now there is further emphasis on artistic credibility and the importance of writing tracks. Fortunately before this turning tide, Bacharach penned hits for the likes of Dionne Warwick, Dusty Springfield, Jackie DeShannon, Tom Jones and Marty Robbins to name a few. Although a number of these were composed with writing partner Hal David, tonight Burt is performing solo.
There is no doubt the musician who is now in his 80s looks a shadow of his former self sat behind the piano yet there is a strong live outfit supporting him throughout the show. The huge amounts of hits covered tonight including 'What's New Pussy Cat' 'Anyone Who Had a Heart' and 'I Say A Little Prayer' to name a few is a huge reminder of the legacy Burt will leave behind as he is the mind behind some of the most recognisable hits of the 60s. 70s and 80s.
The first concert at the Festival Hall for which I have ever wanted my money back. The microphones had not been set up correctly, making the interminable chats between each number totally inaudible. A frustrating experience, leading to large number of the audience walking out.
Burt was outstanding. Amazing to watch saw him last Aspen. He gets better all the time . A great audience at ucla

Billie Eilish fans lash out at ‘ridiculous’ ticket prices for 2025 tour
Billie Eilish fans have called out the US pop star after it emerged that standing tickets to her forthcoming arena shows were being sold for £145 each.
Pre-sale tickets to the singer’s Hit Me Hard and Soft tour became available between 30 April to 1 May, including early access for American Express card members.
The 22-year-old will be performing a string of dates in the UK and Ireland next year, including five nights at the O2 Arena in London, two nights in Glasgow, four in Manchester and two in Dublin.
In press material announcing the tour, it was revealed that Eilish’s team had chosen to use Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange, meaning fans have the option to resell tickets to other fans in the US or Canada if they are no longer able to attend themselves.
“The tour wants to give fans, not scalpers, the best chance to buy tickets at face value,” the statement said.
As tickets went on sale, however, many fans were dismayed to learn how much they were priced at, with many branding the sum “ridiculous” in the midst of a cost of living crisis.
“I honestly wanted more Billie tickets but £145 for standing is so ridiculous I can’t even process it,” one fan wrote on X/Twitter.
“£145 for Billie Eilish tickets does she not know there’s a cost of living [crisis] happening in the UK,” fan Zoe said.
Another remarked: “Me coming onto Ticketmaster seeing Billie Eilish prices then coming straight back out again. £145 for standing is this delusion?” In the replies, the fan compared the price to the first time she saw Eilish live, when she paid £20 for a ticket.
Not everyone had sympathy for fans though, as some said it was their choice to pay that much for a ticket.
X/Twitter user Billy asked: “At what point do people realise they’re being conned and priced out. If you’re buying tickets at that price then honestly you’re part of the problem now.”
Matt, the writer behind the Scientists of Sound music blog, agreed: “People paying nearly £145 for Billie Eilish tickets are part of the problem. When these venues sell out at these prices artists and promoters couldn’t care less as they’re getting away with it. Fans are being completely priced out of these events and it’s only getting worse.”
One fan, who preferred to remain anonymous, told The Independent that buying tickets to concerts often felt like an “online war”, with fans feeling pressured into paying extortionate sums or else risk missing out.
“Artists and ticketing companies know that their fans will pay any amount of money to see their favourite artists,” he said, “and it’s only getting worse because fandoms are so strong. At what point does it go too far? This feels pretty close.”
At what point does it go too far? This feels pretty close
Confirming he had paid £146 for a standing ticket at the newly built Co-op Live arena in Manchester, the fan admitted he felt exploited.
“I go to quite a few gigs a year, [and] whenever it comes to the bigger shows you’re looking at a minimum of £70 or £80,” he said. “I paid £110 for standing to see Taylor Swift at Wembley, which actually feels like a bit of a bargain now.”
The fan said that artist exploitation went beyond concert tickets: “I’ve got into collecting vinyl recently and didn’t realise how many variants there are per album with exclusive songs or photos or whatever it might be. These artists know that their fans want every version because they love them so much. It just feels unfair.”
Jason Burt bought tickets for his 14-year-old daughter and said they were around the same price they paid for Eilish’s last tour, “but slightly less than I did for [Bruce] Springsteen this time last year”.
“The price is, in my opinion, excessive, despite the fact she will be thrilled by the concert,” he said. “[My daughter] is aware of the cost and appreciates how lucky she is to be able to go.”
Mr Burt said there was “definitely an element of exploitation” involved with artists of Eilish’s size, but questioned how much involvement the artists themselves had in deciding ticket prices.
He also pointed out the other ways in which artists are able to generate revenue from their fans: “If you have 30+ formats of an album, for example, there is an implicit understanding that some fans will buy all of them, which in turns pushes its chart position exponentially,” he said.
“Similarly, merch at gigs. Some will want all of it. As a parent, I wouldn’t buy it all and i’m lucky my daughter has no interest in that level of ‘completism’, but I’m sure it puts pressure on parents at a time we can least afford it.”
A representative for Eilish declined to comment when contacted by The Independent.
Eilish recently hit out at major artists making “40 different vinyl packages that have a different unique thing ust to get you to keep buying more”, branding the practice “wasteful”.
She was later forced to clarify that she was not calling out fellow pop star Taylor Swift, who had recently announced a number of different versions of her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department.
“I wasn’t singling anyone out, these are industry-wide systemic issues. and when it comes to variants, so many artists release them, including ME! Which I clearly state in the article,” Eilish wrote on Instagram.
“The climate crisis is now and it’s about all of us being part of the problem and trying to do better sheesh.”
