Sightseeing:
With nearly four million people, Busan is South Korea's second largest city and the country's largest seaport. This gives the city an international flair, with sailors from around the world trooping through and, these days, more than a few tourists (mostly from China, Japan, and Russia) too.
Beomeo-sa Temple , subway Beomeosa. One of Korea's Great 5 Temples, this large temple complex is located up in the mountains, seemingly much further away from the big city than the few kilometers it is.
Taejongdae is one of the famous tourist attractions in Pusan, with its white lighthouse overlooking the green sea. Many people enjoy eating fresh raw fish on the rocky shore, taking a boat around the Olyuk ('five or six') Islands, and seeing the famous 'Suicide Rock.' When the weather is nice, Daema Island can be seen in the distance, 56 km away. The scene from the observation deck is beautiful and the white lighthouse together with the green sea looks very exotic. The walk from the entrance to the lighthouse is quite long. However, a shuttle bus runs from the shops.
Tours Excursions Transportation:
Busan Hop on/off tour. The Haeundae route is every 30 minutes while the Taejongdae route is every 40 minutes.
The Taejongdae route has a stop near the cruise terminal - simply walk out the port gates and turn left towards the Maritime Museum. Walk slightly uphill behind the building until you reach the main road and the HOHO stop is straight ahead. By subway
The three lines of the Busan Subway connect the bus terminals and nearly all sights of interest together. Rides are W1,100 or 1,300 depending on distance (hang onto your ticket until you exit), and both signage and announcements are in English so finding your way is easy.
There are plenty of taxis prowling the streets of Busan. Regular taxi flag drop is W1800 for the first two kilometers, then the meter starts ticking at W100 for each 169m. Deluxe taxis (black and red) charge W4200 for the first 3 km and then W200 for each 199m.
It is certainly doable to tour the area independently as it is quite safe and Koreans are very friendly. For best results, you should have some print-outs of where you want the taxi to take you.
Busan as a whole is far too large to walk around, but some areas like Gwangalli Beach and Yongdusan Park are best covered on foot.
Most Korean cities offer regularly scheduled city bus tours that provide visitors with a convenient and affordable way to take a closer look at the city. These tours often provide visitors the opportunity to get on and off the bus at the attractions they wish to see .
It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .
Nearby Places:
Shopping and food.
The International Market in the vicinity of Biff Square, where the shuttle drops you off. Do not get lost, this is a large area of small streets!
Ja-galchi Fish Market is also close to the shuttle stop. If you're in Busan, then you must visit Jagalchi Fish Market, which Busan is famous for. This market displays freshly caught fish and various other sea creatures that are still alive.
The currency of South Korea is the won. 1 US$= approx 1000 won.
ATM are ubiquitous, but most Korean ATMs don't accept foreign cards, only special Global ATMs do. These can be found at airports and some subway stations in major cities, as well as in many Family Mart convenience stores, so stock up before heading to the countryside. Credit card acceptance, on the other hand, is very good, and all but the very cheapest restaurants and motels will take Visa and Mastercard.
Currency Converter
Communication:
Korean. English is fairly well spoken, especially by the younger generation. They surely like to practice their skills on English speaking tourists.
South Korea is the world's most wired country and Cafes which offer free WiFi for customers, known as PC bang, are ubiquitous through the country. Most coffee shops have WiFi.
The emergency number for police is 112

Cruises from/to Busan (Kyongju), South Korea
Busan (kyongju), south korea cruise port.
Whether you call it Pusan or Busan, you’ll have an incredible experience visiting the city. Located at the southern tip of South Korea, Pusan is the nation’s second largest city. While this is a big city, it offers more natural beauty than Seoul, the capital. Pusan has beaches, hot springs and beautiful parks. If you are looking for more of a city feel, Pusan delivers on that as well. You’ll find lots of shopping complexes and tall buildings, and Pusan is South Korea’s hub for trading and its port is the fifth biggest in the world. If you are cruising to Pusan, here are a few things to see and do:
- You don’t have to be hungry to enjoy the Jagalchi Fish Market. Sit back and watch the fish get delivered and assorted, and then observe the locals looking for the freshest specimens – the whole process is a show on its own.
- Tour the Pusan Port and learn about all the imports and exports that make their way to and from Pusan. Your tour shows you just how significant this port is to South Korea and the world.
- For some time in the great outdoors, visit Taejongdae Park. This park is along the shoreline and offers beautiful views of the coast. This park is also famous for its white lighthouse and the fact that ancient kings used this park for archery practice.
- Take a strawberry milk bath at the Hurshimchung Spa where there are lots of different pools at different temperatures, along with heated igloos. It’s a great place to unwind.

Busan, South Korea Cruise Port
Westerdam in Busan, South Korea
Formerly spelled Pusan, but now changed to Busan although since apparently the Korean pronunciation actually is Pusan the spelling change really makes no sense, this city is South Korea’s second most populous city after Seoul. It is the 5th busiest seaport in the world and one of only 2 cities in South Korea not to be captured by North Korea during the Korean war. Being the closest Korean city to Japan, it has been a trade port for centuries. The climate is humid subtropical with average highs from the 40’s to 80’s °F and average lows from the 30’s to 70’s °F. August and September are generally rainy with a possibility of typhoons. October and November generally have nice weather. Busan has the least snow of anywhere in Korea falling only an average of 5 days per year.
entrance to Busan Tower
The port is mainly commercial, but provides free shuttles for cruise ship passengers into the city. When we came to Busan on the Holland America Westerdam, the port’s shuttle took us to Yongdusan Park, whose main attraction is Busan Tower. Free wifi is available at the port and in most coffee shops around town.
money exchange bus at the port in Busan
Currency is the South Korean won. There was a mobile bank booth right at the port that would exchange American money for Korean, and vice versa so passengers could change any leftover Korean money back to American before returning to the ship. We brought some Korean money from home, but didn’t use it all so we changed our leftover Korean money to American since we had no other ports in Korea. They gave the official exchange rate of the day and did not charge us a fee for their service.
campground next to the cruise dock
From the ship we could see a little campground right next to the cruise terminal. Within a little fenced in area it had buildings that are probably restrooms, a loop road through the camping area, greenspace with a few swings in the center, and large square gravel campsites around the outer edge each marked with a number. Most of the people there had tents, but there was one with a trailer when we came. John saw another trailer pull in, but instead of maneuvering it around to park it while hitched up the guy had some sort of motorized jack. He unhitched the trailer and used a phone app to make the trailer park itself. John was pretty impressed by that and I was sorry I missed it because it would have been interesting to see and not something you see every day. We didn’t even know such a thing existed.
Korean dancer
When it neared time for the ship to leave some Korean dancers gave a performance from the port on a little stage facing the ship.
Busan cruise ship dock
Tourist attractions in Busan include parks, museums, temples, a lighthouse, and lots of shopping including major brand stores, local markets, and the largest retail store in the world. Boat tours around nearby islands are popular with tourists. There is a maritime museum near the port with a hop on hop off bus stop nearby for one of the two available routes though some people said Busan’s Ho-Ho bus service is not always reliable. China town is also within walking distance of the ship. Busan does have a subway system for those who want to plan their own tours. For those who travel by taxi, tipping is not customary in Asia.
Korean war memorial on a hill above Busan
There’s a war memorial up on a hill that you can see in the distance from the ship, or up close if you go there. The monument is located within the UN memorial cemetery, which is the only UN memorial cemetery in the world. It has the remains of people from 11 different countries who lost their lives in the Korean War.
cruise ship dock in Busan
Excursions offered from Holland America Westerdam mainly went to various temples. Some included things like a tea ceremony or beach stop. The highlights tour included a fish market, a skywalk trail over the ocean, an island visit, and a stop at Gujke Market.

South Korea's second-largest city is known for its colossal fish market. The top shore excursions include visits to the Busan Tower, Taeshin Park and the crowded beaches at Haeundae. Tourists will also want to experience the extraordinary views from the mountaintop Kumjongsansong Fortress or listen to the chanting of the monks at the Tongdosa Temple.

Busan (Pusan), South Korea
South Korea’s second-largest city (after the capital, Seoul), Busan is located in the southeastern corner of the country along the Sea of Japan. It combines a vibrant, big-city atmosphere with a famously laid-back attitude and subtropical landscapes. Often described as the "San Francisco of Korea," thanks mainly to its hilly terrain and close-knit neighborhoods, it offers visitors a little of everything: fashionable boutiques, dynamic culture and buzzy nightlife, as well as sandy beaches, hot springs and nearby mountains crossed with hiking trails and dotted with temples. Cultural highlights include the Gamcheon Cultural Village; the spectacular Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, built into the side of a cliff; and Art Street in Sinchang-dong, which hosts art competitions, exhibitions and cultural events such as the annual Busan International Film Festival. Those who enjoy hiking can explore the famed cliffs of Taejongdae Park, while the white sand beaches at Gwangalli and Haeundae are ideal places to relax by the seashore. Foodies will love Busan, too, not just for its excellent restaurants but also for the many atmospheric markets: the low-key Millak Hoe Town Market, tourist spots like Jagalchi Fish Market and the market at Haeundae with its ramshackle stalls selling gukpab (a traditional rice soup).

Jeju Island (Cheju City, Korea)
Cruise port schedule, live map, terminals, news.
Region Asia
Local Time 2024-05-06 00:49
Port Jeju Island cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Jeju Island, Cheju City, Korea. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.
Jeju Island (aka Jejudo/Chejudo) is located in Korea Strait, approx 130 km (80 mi) to the south of mainland South Korea. Jeju is among the country's top island resort destinations and is often referred to as the "Chinese tourist mecca " due to its huge popularity among tourists arriving from China. The island has total area approx 1848 km2 (714 mi2) and population around 0,6 million.
Currently, South Korea has 4 cruise ports with all 5 international passenger terminals - Jeju, Sokcho , Incheon and Busan .
The island's largest settlement is Jeju City (population around 400,000) located on the central-northern coast. In 2016, Port Jeju (locode KRCHA) handled a total of 534 cruise ship calls. In 2016, South Korea was visited by ~2 million cruise ship tourists *130% increase over 2015). The country was included in a total of 811 cruise itineraries, of which 534 to Jeju, 215 to Busan , 62 to Incheon-Seoul .
Due to the COVID crisis, Port Jeju paused its cruise shipping operations for 2 years (February 2020-2022).
The iland has a designated World Heritage Site - "Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes".
Climate is temperate - even in the winter, temperatures rarely fall below 0 C (32 F). However, in January 2016, a cold-weather front affected the island. The snow forced the cancellation of around 1200 flights, stranding around 90,000 passengers.
The island is served by Jeju International Airport (South Korea's 2nd largest - after Incheon). Regularly scheduled domestic flights are operated between Jeju City and Seoul (Korea's capital city). This air route is the world's busiest, with 10+ million passengers being flown between both cities annually.
Popular tourist attractions and places on Jeju Island include Seongsan Ilchulbong ("Sunrise Peak"), the 8 km (5 ml) long Manjanggul Lava Tube (1-km publicly accessible), Mount Hallasan (highest elevation point - 1950 m / 6400 ft), Teddy Bear Museum, Seongeup Folk Village, Jeju Loveland (sex-themed sculpture park).
Jeju Naval Base (officially "Jeju Civilian-Military Complex Port") was completed and opened in February 2016. Construction works started in 2007. The project's total cost was USD 907 million.
- The base is located near Gangjeong (on the island's southern coast). Its pier capacity is 20 warships, 3 submarines plus 2 passenger cruise liners (GT tonnage up to 150,000 tons).
- The base's construction was halted several times by local protesters concerned about its environmental impact. The protesters also saw the base as a USA-driven military project aimed at China.
On March 11, 2017, the liner Costa Serena docked at Jeju port in the afternoon. However, all passengers (over 3,400) refused to disembark, while at the cruise terminal, customs officers, tour guides and ~80 buses were waiting for them.
- The Chinese cruise tourists remained on the ship for 4 hours before the vessel departed Jeju back to port Tianjin. The ship was privately booked and all passengers received the cruise vacation as a reward organized by a Chinese company. The ship had departed on this exclusive itinerary from port Fukuoka Japan.
- The incident contributed to the Costa Asia company's cancellation of all scheduled port visits to Jeju Island (in the period March-June 2017), which included 26 ship calls and around 120,000 booked Chinese passengers.
- In March 2017, all the world's largest cruise companies (RCCL Royal Caribbean, Carnival Corporation, Costa Asia and Princess Cruises) also canceled ship calls to South Korean cruise ports and replaced them with Japanese ports of call.
- These decisions were due to the rising diplomatic tension between China and South Korea over the installation of the US Army missile defense system THAAD ("Terminal High Altitude Area Defense") on South Korean territory. This is an anti-ballistic missile system designed to intercept and shoot down medium-range and long-range missiles. Beijing's anger was over a joint South Korea-USA plan to set up THAAD missile system in the country. Officially, the missile system is against North Korean nuclear missiles. According to Beijing, this far-reaching radar system targets China.
Official statistical data (reported by Korea's Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries) for 2016 showed that a foreign cruise passenger spends on average nearly USD 890 (on tours / excursions, shopping, food, drinks, services).
Jeju Island cruise terminal
Most cruise ships to Jeju Island (Jejudo) dock at Jeju Port located on the island's northern coast. The cruise port is located approx 2 km (1,2 ml) from the city. Arriving cruise passengers are greeted with a traditional folklore show by local performers. Close to the pier (20-25 min walking distance) there is a small shopping/dining area.
Since 2016, alternative docking is offered at the new Jeju Naval Base near Gangjeong (on the island's southern coast). The base has 2 piers dedicated for cruise ships.
Some cruise ships may dock at Seogwipo Port (locode KRSPO) which is on Jeju's central-southern coast nad serves the island's second-largest city.
(NEW) Jeju Port Cruise Terminal
Currently, South Korea has 5 international cruise terminals - two in Jeju, one in Sokcho , one in Incheon , and one in Busan . In late August 2019, the country's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced its plan to open a new Jeju Port dedicated to inbound (international) cruise ship tourists. The endorsed budget for this (Jeju's 3rd) cruise terminal was set at KRW 2,8 trillion (USD 2,3 billion).
The new cruise-dedicated harbor port will be built on Jeju Island's northern coast, including areas in Samdo-dong, Geonip-dong, and Yongdam-dong. Project's scheduled completion is by year 2040. When the 3rd terminal is completed, the island's total annual passenger capacity will be ~4,7 million tourists. In 2019, in Incheon was inaugurated the Songdo International Cruise Terminal.
