  • Passport valid for at least six months beyond intended duration of visit
  • Visa – except if entering for tourism for less than 30 days
  • International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) World Health Organization (WHO) card if arriving on flights from Senegal or other West African countries

Visas :  Effective February 24, 2020, U.S. citizens entering Cabo Verde for tourism for less than 30 days do not require a tourist visa. For tourist visits longer than 30 days, two types of visas are available: a single-entry visa valid for up to 90 days or a multiple-entry visa valid for five years. Visit the  Embassy of Cabo Verde website  for the most current visa information.

You may also apply for a visa upon arrival, valid for a single entry stay of 30 days, and pre-pay at least five days prior to traveling through  www.embcv-usa. gov .cv , or apply and pay in cash (Euros, U.S. Dollars, or Cabo Verdean Escudos) or by Visa/Mastercard, upon arrival at one of the country’s four international airports:

  • Nelson Mandela International Airport
  • Cesaria Evora Airport
  • Amilcar Cabral International Airport
  • Aristides Pereira International Airport

Travel with Minors :  For both entrance to and exit from Cabo Verde, any parent traveling with a minor should carry the child’s birth certificate. If the child is not traveling with both parents, the non-accompanying parent(s) should provide a signed statement consenting to the child’s travel and naming the adult accompanying the child.

Airport Security Fee :  All foreign citizens planning to travel to Cabo Verde are required to complete a pre-arrival registration and pay the Airport Security Fee (TSA) at the online electronic platform  EASE  at least five days prior to entering Cabo Verde.

The following travelers are exempt from paying the TSA:

  • Children under two years old;
  • Passengers on official missions on aircrafts in the private service of Cabo Verde or foreign countries, on a reciprocity basis;
  • Passengers on planes forced to return to the airport, due to technical or meteorological reasons or any other reasons beyond their control;
  • Transfer passengers;

The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Cabo Verde.

Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction , and  Customs Information  on our websites.

Safety and Security

Exercise extreme caution when participating in water sports, such as swimming, boating, and fishing, as the tides and currents around the islands are very strong. Several small fishing boats have been lost at sea, and drownings have occurred on the beaches and along the coast in Santiago, Sal, and on other islands.

The entire island of Fogo is an active volcano. Future eruptions remain a threat, as do earth tremors throughout the islands, especially on Fogo, Brava, and Santo Antão, and beneath the ocean channels that separate them. General information about natural disaster preparedness is available  on our website .

Crime :  Petty crime and burglary are common in Cabo Verde, especially at marketplaces, festivals, street fairs, and public gatherings. Criminals target anyone perceived to be affluent, regardless of nationality. Avoid groups of children who appear to have no adult supervision, since the perpetrators of petty theft and pickpocketing are often groups of street children. Muggings occur often, particularly at night and in more isolated areas, and often involve violence. The perpetrators are predominantly males between the ages of 14 and 25 operating in groups of two or more. Due to inadequate lighting in many public areas, you should be especially vigilant after dark, carry a flashlight to illuminate your path, and never go out alone. You should also keep vehicle doors and windows locked and avoid isolated places.

It is dangerous to use hillside stairways connecting neighborhoods in Praia and many other Cabo Verdean cities and towns, even in broad daylight. These stairways isolate users and make them vulnerable to assault.

International Financial Scams :  See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information.

Victims of Crime :  U.S. citizen victims of crime are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy for assistance.

Report crimes to the local police at 132 and contact the U.S. Embassy at +(238) 260-8900 or after hours at +(238) 991-3325. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating crime and prosecuting offenders.

See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

We can:

  • Help you find appropriate medical care.
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police.
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent.
  • Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation and following its conclusion.
  • Provide a  list of local attorneys .
  • Provide our information on  victim’s compensation programs in the United States .
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution.
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home.
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport.

Domestic Violence :  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy for assistance.

Tourism :  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities are not common. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment may not be readily available. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities to provide urgent medical treatment. There is no hyperbaric/decompression chamber in the country for scuba divers. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking in illegal drugs in Cabo Verde are severe, and convicted offenders can expect long jail sentences and heavy fines.

The Department of State warns all U.S. citizens against taking any firearms or ammunition into Cabo Verde. If you are caught entering Cabo Verde with firearms or ammunitions, you may face severe penalties, including prison time.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and  the Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our  website  for further information.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods:  Counterfeit and pirated goods are illegal in both Cabo Verde and the United States.  U.S. citizens who buy these goods are punishable under Cabo Verdean law. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the  U.S. Department of Justice website  for more information.

LGBTI Travelers:  There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in Cabo Verde.

See   our  LGBTI  page and our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance:  There are significant hardships in Cabo Verde for persons with limited mobility due to rugged terrain, widespread use of cobblestone streets and pathways, very limited number of elevators in buildings, and frequent power outages.

Students:  See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips  page.

Women Travelers:  See our travel tips for  Women Travelers .

For emergency services in Cabo Verde, dial  132 .

Medical facilities in Cabo Verde are limited, and some medications are in short supply or otherwise unavailable. The country’s largest hospitals are in Praia and Mindelo. There are smaller public health centers and private medical clinics, of variable quality in both personnel and equipment, throughout the country. Transportation between islands is difficult, and inter-island medevac options are limited. The islands of Brava and Santo Antão do not have operational airports, which makes air evacuation in the event of a medical emergency difficult.

Those traveling to Cabo Verde for scuba diving should be aware that there is no hyperbaric/decompression facility on the islands.

Ambulance services are:

  • not widely available, and training and availability of emergency responders may be below U.S. standards.
  • not present throughout the country or are unreliable in most areas.
  • not equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment.
  • not staffed with trained paramedics and often have little or no medical equipment.
  • Injured or seriously ill travelers may prefer to take a taxi or private vehicle to the nearest major hospital rather than wait for an ambulance.

We do not pay medical bills.   Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance:   Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See  our webpage  for more information on insurance coverage overseas. Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on types of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription.

Vaccinations:   Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further health information:

  •   World Health Organization  (WHO)
  •   U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC)

Air Quality:   Visit  AirNow Department of State  for information on air quality at U.S. embassies and consulates.

The U.S. Embassy maintains a  list of doctors and hospitals .  We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Health facilities in general:

  • Public medical clinics lack basic resources and supplies.
  • Most hospitals and medical professionals require cash payment.
  • Medical staff may speak little or no English.
  • Psychological and psychiatric services are limited, with hospital-based care only available through government institutions.

Pharmaceuticals:

  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration are responsible for rules governing the transport of medication back to the United States. Medication purchased abroad must meet their requirements to be legally brought back into the United States.  Medication should be for personal use and must be approved for usage in the United States.  Please visit the  U.S. Customs and Border Protection  and the  Food and Drug Administration  websites for more information.

Water Quality:

  • In many areas, tap water is not potable. Bottled water and beverages are generally safe.  Be aware that ice for drinks may be made using tap water.

Adventure Travel:

  • Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about  Adventure Travel .

General Health:

The following diseases are prevalent:

  • African Tick-Bite Fever
  • Chikungunya
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Tuberculosis

Use the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended mosquito repellents and sleep under insecticide-impregnated mosquito nets.  Chemoprophylaxis is recommended for all travelers even for short stays.

Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about  Resources for Travelers  regarding specific issues in Cabo Verde.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:  Cabo Verde has an extensive road system. On the islands of Santiago, Sal, and São Vicente, many urban and rural roads are asphalt. On other islands, some roads are narrow, winding, and mostly cobblestone.

During the rainy season, cobblestone roads are especially slippery, and mud and rockslides are common on roads that cut through mountains. Roads and streets often are unlit and driving at night is hazardous.

Traffic Laws :   Most accidents result from aggressive driving, speeding, passing on blind curves, and/or on inclines or declines in the rain.

Driving while under the influence of alcohol is a serious problem in Cabo Verde and U.S. citizens could face severe penalties, including prison time, for driving under the influence. You are most likely to encounter a drunk driver on Sundays and at night. Exercise extreme caution toward both pedestrians and other drivers after celebrations, festivals, and open-air concerts as well as during holiday periods, such as Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and Carnival.

Public Transportation :   Praia has three principal modes of public transport: taxi, bus, and commuter vans. Using buses and vans is strongly discouraged. These vans may have a fixed, but flexible route and often contain more passengers than is safe. Licensed, registered taxis are clearly marked and tan/cream in color. While official taxis are considered safe and reliable, passengers should still exercise good common sense and avoid sharing a taxi with strangers.

See our  Road Safety page  for more information.

Aviation Safety Oversight:  The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of Cabo Verde’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Cabo Verde’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel :  Mariners planning travel to Cabo Verde should also check for U.S. maritime  advisories and alerts . Information may also be posted to the  U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the  NGA broadcast warnings .

How To Get To Cape Verde: Full Travel Guide

travel documents cape verde

Cape Verde, also known as Cabo Verde, is an archipelago of ten volcanic islands off the coast of West Africa. It’s a stunning destination for any traveler looking for sun-filled days and warm sandy beaches. But as you want to plan your trip to the islands , you might wonder, How Do I Get To Cape Verde?

You get to Cape Verde by flying into any of the four international airports on Santiago, Sāo Vicente, Sal, or Boa Vista. Most major European cities have direct or connected flights to Cape Verde. From the UK, only TUI Airways has direct flights to Cape Verde .  From the USA, you mostly fly via Lisbon, Portugal.

Whether you want to explore the culture and history or relax in paradise, Cape Verde is a great place to be. And since we spend ten weeks on many different islands of Cape Verde, we know what we’re talking about. In this travel guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about Cape Verde, from planning your flights to choosing the best time to visit . Let’s dig in!

Can I Fly Directly to Cape Verde?

Often the first thing travelers look for when booking flights is whether there are direct routes to the destination. Let’s face it; nobody wants to endure layovers and long waits at the airport. So, what about Cape Verde? Are there direct flights you can take?

You can only fly directly to Cape Verde through TUI Airways . They operate direct flights to Sal and Boa Vista from Birmingham, Manchester, and Gatwick airports in the UK. These flights are scheduled to run at least twice a week. TAP Portugal operates direct flights from Lisbon to Cape Verde daily.

Other islands can be reached via domestic flights or ferries. Later in this article, I’ll tell you more about that topic.

Note:   TAP Air Portugal has flights from Paris, Frankfurt, Rome, Amsterdam, Madrid, and most other major European airports to Lisbon (from where you can book a connecting flight to Cape Verde). If you’re based out of the US or Canada, TAP Air Portugal also has daily flights to Lisbon from New York, Miami, Boston, and Toronto. I recommend using Skyscanner to find the best connections and the cheapest flights.

How Long Is the Flight to Cape Verde?

Now that you know how to get to Cape Verde, let’s talk about how long the flight will be. Let’s also look at how much of a difference there is between a direct flight and a connecting flight.

A direct flight from the UK to Cape Verde Islands Sal or Boa Vista will take around five to six hours. On a connecting flight, the journey is around 9 hours, depending on your starting point in Europe and the number of layovers. Flights from US and Canada will take between 10 and 15 hours due to the layover in Lisbon .

Table Estimated Flight Times

As you can see, the difference in flight time for direct flights from Lisbon and connecting flights is just around 3 hours in most cases. Perhaps you can use that extra time to relax and read up on what to do once you get to Cape Verde!

What Airport Do You Fly Into At Cape Verde?

Regardless of whether you take a direct or connecting flight, your final destination will be one of the four international airports located on the islands of Santiago, Sao Vicente, Sal, and Boa Vista.

The airports at Cape Verde you can fly into are – Amílcar Cabral International Airport (SID) on the island of Sal, Nelson Mandela International Airport (RAI) on the island of Santiago, Cesária Évora Airport (VXE) on the island of São Vicente, and Aristides Pereira International Airport (BVC) on the island of Boa Vista.

When you fly into one of the airports, you can easily go island hopping by using domestic flights or ferries. At all airports are car rental companies, so you can easily drive around the islands once you arrive. But let’s have a more in-depth look at each of these airports.

1) Amílcar Cabral International Airport (SID)

Located on the island of Sal, this is the busiest airport in Cape Verde, with over a million passengers every year. It’s a single-terminal airport that offers both international and domestic flights.

Fun Fact:   Did you know that NASA once used this airport as a facility to handle the Space Shuttle upon its re-entry to orbit?

From Sal , you can transit to the island of São Nicolau by ferry.

2) Nelson Mandela International Airport (RAI)

Formerly called the Praia International Airport, this airport is located on the island of Santiago and is the second busiest in Cape Verde. It has both domestic and international flights, as well as charter services.

Santiago is the biggest southern island of Cape Verde. When you want to visit the smaller south islands such as Fogo, Brava, and Maio, you fly into Santiago and hop on a ferry to one of these islands.

3) Cesária Évora Airport (VXE)

Located on the island of São Vicente and operated by Aeroportos Segurança Aérea, this is one of the oldest airports in Cape Verde. It offers both domestic and international flights, with a modern terminal that can process almost 500 passengers an hour. The airport was named after the famous singer Cesária Évora, who was born on the island.

When you want to visit Santo Antão island, you fly into this airport and take the one-hour ferry to Santo Antão that goes twice a day.

4) Aristides Pereira International Airport (BVC)

Originally a domestic airport, this airport was recently upgraded to an international airport in 2007. Named after the first president of Cape Verde, it is located on the island of Boa Vista and serves the island of Sal Rei. Currently, the airport offers services to many African and European countries.

When Can I Get The Cheapest Flight To Cape Verde?

As with any destination, the cheapest time to visit Cape Verde is during the low season – i.e., mid-January, mid-June, and mid-September to mid-December. The peak season for tourists visiting the islands is from July to September and during Christmas, so expect higher prices during these times.

The cheapest flights to Cape Verde are in the months of February and March, when ticket prices drop to around $400-$500. The most expensive months to fly in are July and October when ticket prices can go up to $750. We recommend checking TUI Airways and Skyscanner to find the cheapest flights.

Can I Take The Ferry To Cape Verde?

We’ve been talking quite a bit about flights, so we’re sure you’re wondering if there are other ways to get to Cape Verde. Being an island nation, you must be asking yourself, can I take the ferry to cape Verde? Because it seems natural that some ferry services must be available, right?

You can’t take the ferry to Cape Verde, but domestic ferry services between the islands are available. This means you fly into one of the four international airports and are able to take a ferry to visit other Cape Verde islands without an airport.

We’ve taken the ferry between São Vicente and Santo Antão. And visited the island of Fogo by using the ferry from Santiago island and flew back by plane. And want to share a bit more information and our experience.

Domestic ferries usually travel at fixed times every day, and tickets can be bought on the spot or in advance via cvinterilhas.cv website. The ferry usually takes between 1-3 hours for shorter distances but sometimes takes up to 12 hours between islands at a far distance.

For ferry route schedules, times and tickets, it is best to check the Cape Verde ferry company CV Interilhas. Please note that the ferry routes and times aren’t always very reliable. We experienced times ferries didn’t sail between certain islands or were canceled due to weather, lack of people, or other sometimes unclear reasons.

When Is The Best Time To Fly To Cape Verde?

When planning a trip to Cape Verde, it’s important to consider the time of year you’ll be traveling. The weather in Cape Verde is generally pleasant all year round and windy since its islands. But the best time to visit Cape Verde will depend on what kind of activities and experiences you’re looking for. But let me give you the most straightforward answer;

The best time to visit Cape Verde is between November and June. The average day temperature is around 24°C (75°F), the sea temperature is 25°C, and there is almost no rain. Perfect for a white-sandy beach holiday.

During the summer months (June to October), temperatures are higher, and the weather is generally quite humid. The island experiences some rain in September, but this time of year is a great time to visit if you’re looking for fun beach days and outdoor activities.

The winter months (November to May) tend to have cooler temperatures and less humidity, doing sightseeing or exploring the islands more comfortable. This is also the best time to see some of the local wildlife, as the waters are clearer, and it’s easier to spot whales (March-May around Boa Vista), dolphins, turtles, and other marine life.

If you like to go kitesurfing, then the months of January through March have the strongest winds, but it can be done year-round. The best islands for kitesurfing are Sal and Boa Vista. You can read more about that in my article: Best Surf Spots in Boa Vista Cape Verde.

Note:   If you’re going to Cape Verde to enjoy its cultural attractions, you should plan your trip around February/ March. This is when the islands celebrate the iconic Carnival with music, dance, and other festivities.

  • Travel Bookings:  It’s always a good idea to book your travel arrangements in advance, such as accommodation and ferry tickets. Cape Verde gets quite busy during peak times, so you may find it difficult to secure last-minute bookings.

When should I do my EASE pre-registration for Cape Verde?

Cape Verde is a popular destination for travellers in search of paradise-like scenery. To get there, however, you need to comply with certain rules and procedures. In this article, we'll look at the EASE for Cape Verde, information on the airport, visas, travel and everything else you need to make your stay in this magnificent archipelago easier.

What is the EASE and how do I get it?

L' EASE also known as the Electronic Application for Security Evaluation, is a compulsory pre-registration system for travellers to Cape Verde. It enables the Cape Verdean authorities to assess and authorise your entry into the country before your arrival. The EASE must be carried out by all foreign visitors, whatever their reason for travelling (tourism, business, transit, etc.).

EASE application procedure

To obtain your EASE, you must follow these steps:

  • Visit the Official website of the Cape Verdean government dedicated to the EASE or on the website of a recognised visa agency;
  • Complete the online form with your personal details, passport details and dates of stay in Cape Verde ;
  • Pay the application fee online ( 31 € excluding service charges);
  • Once your request has been validated, you will receive a confirmation e-mail containing your EASE in the form of a PDF file.

The average time taken to obtain your EASE is generally 48 to 72 hours It is therefore recommended that you obtain one at least 72 hours before departure. Once obtained, it is valid for 1 year for stays of 30-90 days and must be presented on boarding and on arrival in Cape Verde.

All you need to know about visas and administrative formalities for Cape Verde

In addition to the EASE, some travellers may be required to apply for a tourist visa to enter Cape Verde. French nationals and most European Union countries do not require a visa for a stay of less than 30 days. Other nationalities should contact the Cape Verdean embassy or consulate in their country of residence for further information.

For those affected by this obligation, here are the necessary documents:

  • A passport valid for the entire duration of your stay;
  • The completed visa application form ;
  • A recent passport photo ;
  • Proof of accommodation booked during your stay;
  • Proof of payment of the visa fee (approximately €50).

Arriving at the airport: what to do and what to expect

When you arrive at Praia or Sal international airport, you will have to go through passport control. To facilitate your entry into Cape Verde, make sure you have with you :

  • Your valid passport ;
  • The EASE document in print or digital format;
  • Your visa (if required) ;
  • Proof of accommodation booking ;
  • A return or onward ticket to prove that you intend to leave the country before your residence permit expires.

Organise your transport and accommodation in advance.

To avoid hassle once you're there, we strongly recommend that you book your transport (internal flights, transfers, car hire, etc.) and accommodation before you leave. What's more, this will enable you to take advantage of the best deals available.

Taking out travel insurance

Although Cape Verde is a safe country for tourists, it is always wise to take out travel insurance to cover medical expenses, flight cancellations and lost luggage.

Familiarise yourself with the local language and culture

The official language of Cape Verde is Portuguese, but Cape Verdean Creole is also widely spoken. Learning a few basic words and phrases in these languages can make it much easier to communicate with the locals. In addition, respect local customs and traditions to encourage harmonious exchanges with the local population.

Cape Verde travel guide

The islands of Cape Verde are a bewitching blend of Portuguese and African influences. You'll see it in the many European-style buildings and the curious musical styles, but its particularly noticeable in the food. Portuguese fare – especially seafood dishes laden with garlic and olive oil – and more African-style fare – such as stews, beans, maize and tropical crops – comfortably combined on most menus.

Many associate Cape Verde with the mournful songs of Cesaria Evoria, the islands' best known singer. The ‘barefoot diva' is the best exponent of morna, a lovelorn type of folk music similar to Portuguese fado. Music is a key component of life on Cape Verde, and several of the islands stage exuberant carnivals, with the best known being the Baia das Gatas Festival. São Vicente is also renowned for its exuberant festivities.

Once a colony and slave trade outpost, Cape Verde varies wildly in character and scenery through its 10 islands and five tiny islets. From spectacular verdant mountain ranges, to deserted beaches, with a few volcanic landscapes thrown in for good measure, it's the variety that makes Cape Verde such an unusual and appealing destination.

There’s lush and lively Santiago, the biggest of the islands, which boasts verdant hillsides, jungle and plenty of remarkable wildlife. It’s also the cultural heart of Cape Verde, home to the UNESCO-listed old fort at Cidade da Ribeira Grande de Santiagog (previously called Cidade Velha).

Near Santiago, divers will discover 16th century shipwrecks littering the sea floor. Blue marlin, yellowfin tuna and the odd humpback whale can be seen in the clear blue waters off Boa Vista. The island of Sal is popular for watersports and white sandy beaches, while Fogo is a hiker’s paradise, where volcanic peaks tower 2,829m (9,821 ft) above sea-level.

Cape Verde may have struggled economically since gaining independence from Portugal in 1975, but many argue that it's isolation is a blessing, leaving these islands comparatively unspoiled. The economy is currently stable and investing in modernized infrastructure, service, commerce, foreign investment and tourism. Get there before the crowds inevitably catch on.

Before you travel

No travel can be guaranteed safe. Read all the advice in this guide and any specific travel advice that applies to you:

  • LGBT+ travellers

Follow and contact FCDO travel on Twitter , Facebook and Instagram . You can also sign up to get email notifications when this advice is updated.

Travel insurance

If you choose to travel, research your destinations and get appropriate travel insurance . Insurance should cover your itinerary, planned activities and expenses in an emergency.

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Cape Verde set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Cape Verdean Embassy in Paris, France (in French).

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Cape Verde.

Passport validity requirements

To enter Cape Verde, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Visa requirements

You can enter Cape Verde as a visitor for up to 30 days without a visa.

To stay longer or to travel for other reasons, you must meet the Cape Verde government’s entry requirements  (in Portuguese).

Traveller entry form

You must fill in a traveller entry form 5 days before you arrive in the country. This form includes an airport security fee (‘TSA’), which you must pay before you arrive.

If you’re travelling with a tour operator, check whether they can complete the form for you as part of the booking process.

See more information on the traveller entry form .

Children aged one and under do not need to fill in the traveller entry form.

Vaccine requirements

You must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination, if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk .

For details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations see TravelHealthPro’s Cape Verde guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Cape Verde. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe abroad and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Cape Verde

Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in Cape Verde, attacks cannot be ruled out.

The crime rate in Cape Verde is generally low, but can include pickpocketing, bag snatching, burglary and muggings, particularly in the capital city of Praia and on the islands of Sal and Boa Vista. Sexual assaults are rare but have been reported.

You can take steps to protect yourself and your belongings, including:

  • leaving valuables somewhere secure, such as a hotel safe
  • keeping your belongings in sight at bars and restaurants
  • not carrying large amounts of cash or wearing expensive jewellery
  • avoiding unlit and isolated areas after dark
  • avoiding beaches with limited or restricted visibility
  • making sure your hotel or accommodation’s windows and doors are always locked

Laws and cultural differences

Illegal drugs and prison sentences.

There are severe penalties for possessing, using or trafficking drugs. Penalties include fines and long prison sentences.

Buying property

British nationals have experienced problems when buying property in Cape Verde. Before buying property on the islands, get independent qualified legal advice. See FCDO ’s list of English-speaking lawyers in Cape Verde .

Outdoor activities and adventure tourism

Swimming and water sports safety.

Tides and currents around the islands are very strong. Look out for warning flags and keep within sight of the lifeguard.

See water safety on holiday from the Royal Life Saving Society.

Transport risks

Road travel.

If you are planning to drive in Cape Verde, see information on driving abroad .

You can use a valid UK photocard driving licence to drive in Cape Verde for up to 6 months. If you still have a paper driving licence, you should update it to a photocard licence, or get the 1968 version of the international driving permit ( IDP ) and carry it with your licence.

Hiring vehicles

If you hire a car, scooter or quad bike, make sure it’s in good condition and that it’s fully insured. Hire car companies often have stricter requirements for their customers, such as a year of driving experience, a higher minimum age and holding an IDP .

Quad biking is considered an extreme sport and may not be included in your travel insurance policy. Check whether you need additional insurance and make sure it covers you for the cost of medical care and repatriation.

It’s a legal requirement to wear a crash helmet when riding a scooter or quad bike. Your insurance policy may be invalidated if you have an accident and you’re not wearing a helmet.

Public transport

Only hire authorised taxis from taxi ranks or by asking your hotel to call one. On the islands of Sal and Boa Vista, authorised taxis are coloured blue and yellow.

Intercity bus services can be dangerous because of poor driving.

Sea conditions around Cape Verde can be dangerous. Follow local advice before travelling by sea. Travel by sea to the southern islands of Brava and Fogo in particular can often be disrupted.

Extreme weather and natural disasters

Find out what you can do to prepare for and respond to extreme weather and natural hazards .

The rainy season in Cape Verde is from mid-August to mid-October. Torrential rains can cause floods and landslides. Monitor local weather reports and expect difficulties when travelling to affected areas during this season.

Earthquakes

Seismic activity and tremors can be felt occasionally, mostly on the islands of Brava and Fogo. This is usually within the bounds of normal activity but can sometimes be dangerous. Check with your travel provider before travelling to the islands of Brava or Fogo.

Sandstorms (‘bruma seca’) can happen between December and February. When intense, they can disrupt air travel, especially on the island of Boa Vista. If a sandstorm happens while you’re on one of the islands, contact your tour operator or airline.

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Call 130 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Health risks and recommended vaccines

Check TravelHealthPro’s current advice on Cape Verde to find out how to reduce the health risks you’ll face there.

TravelHealthPro also lists the recommended vaccines that could apply to you. At least 8 weeks before you travel, check how to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page .

Altitude sickness is a risk in parts of Cape Verde. Read more about altitude sickness on TravelHealthPro .

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

The NHS has information on whether you can take your medicine abroad .

You will only be able to buy medication from a pharmacy. Find a pharmacy near you on the Ministry of Health’s list of registered pharmacies  (in Portuguese).

If you have a UK prescription, ask at a pharmacy if they can fill it for you. You may not be able to get the same strength or dosage. Some medicines may not be available or may not be authorised for sale in Cape Verde.

If you need a repeat prescription, go to the nearest health centre or hospital emergency department.

Healthcare facilities in Cape Verde

Medical facilities in Cape Verde are limited, and some medicines are in short supply or unavailable. The largest hospitals are in Praia on Santiago and Mindelo on São Vicente, with smaller medical facilities and clinics located throughout the country. Medical facilities are particularly limited on the island of Boa Vista.

The islands of Brava and Santo Antão do not have working airports, so medical air evacuation is extremely difficult.

FCDO has a list of medical providers in Cape Verde where some staff will speak English.

Travel and mental health

Read FCDO guidance on travel and mental health . There is also mental health guidance on TravelHealthPro .

Safety and security, entry and exit requirements, laws and culture, natural disasters and climate, cabo verde - exercise a high degree of caution.

Exercise a high degree of caution in Cabo Verde due to crime.

The following criminal activity occurs:

  • violent crime
  • mugging, usually at night and in isolated areas. Criminals often seek gold jewellery.
  • residential break-ins
  • sexual assault
  • petty crime

The hillside stairways connecting neighbourhoods are often the scene of assault, even in broad daylight.

Petty crime such as pickpocketing and purse snatching is common. Children often perpetrate these crimes. They particularly occur during festivals and street fairs, and in crowded outdoor market areas, particularly:

  • on the island of São Vicente, including Mindelo
  • in Praia, on the island of Santiago

Do not show signs of affluence.

Ensure your personal belongings, including your passport and other travel documents, are secure at all times.

Road safety

Main roads are usually paved with cobblestones but can be narrow, winding and poorly lit.

Drivers and pedestrians should exercise caution, particularly after dark. Organized roadside assistance is not widely available.

Demonstrations

Demonstrations can occur.

Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time. They can also lead to disruptions to traffic and public transportation.

  • Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities
  • Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations

Mass gatherings (large-scale events)

Strong currents and powerful waves make swimming and water sports dangerous at some locations. Drownings occur every year, especially in Praia. Be vigilant on beaches and never swim alone.

Maritime transportation

Sea conditions can be treacherous.

Mariners should seek local advice prior to travel, particularly to the islands of Brava and Fogo. Advise local ports of arrival and departure times and provide relatives with your itinerary.

Public transportation

Intercity van service can be hazardous due to the bad driving habits of local residents.

Taxis hailed from hotels are generally reliable.

In Praia, city buses and taxis are reliable, clean and in good condition.

We do not make assessments on the compliance of foreign domestic airlines with international safety standards.

This section contains information on possible health risks and restrictions regularly found or ongoing in the destination. Follow this advice to lower your risk of becoming ill while travelling. Not all risks are listed below.

Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic preferably 6 weeks before you travel to get personalized health advice and recommendations.

Routine vaccines

Be sure that your  routine vaccinations , as per your province or territory , are up-to-date before travelling, regardless of your destination.

Some of these vaccinations include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella (chickenpox), influenza and others.

Pre-travel vaccines and medications

You may be at risk for preventable diseases while travelling in this destination. Talk to a travel health professional about which medications or vaccines may be right for you, based on your destination and itinerary.

Yellow fever   is a disease caused by a flavivirus from the bite of an infected mosquito.

Travellers get vaccinated either because it is required to enter a country or because it is recommended for their protection.

  • There is no risk of yellow fever in this country.

Country Entry Requirement*

  • Proof of vaccination is required if you are coming from a country   where yellow fever occurs.

Recommendation

  • Vaccination is not recommended.
  • Discuss travel plans, activities, and destinations with a health care professional.
  • Contact a designated  Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre  well in advance of your trip to arrange for vaccination.

About Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre

* It is important to note that  country entry requirements  may not reflect your risk of yellow fever at your destination. It is recommended that you contact the nearest  diplomatic or consular office  of the destination(s) you will be visiting to verify any additional entry requirements.

Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease that is caused by parasites spread through the bites of mosquitoes.   Limited malaria transmission may occur in this destination, but risk to travellers is very low.    Antimalarial medication is not recommended for most travellers. Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic before travelling to discuss your options. It is recommended to do this 6 weeks before travel, however, it is still a good idea any time before leaving.    Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times:

  • Cover your skin and use an approved insect repellent on uncovered skin.
  • Exclude mosquitoes from your living area with screening and/or closed, well-sealed doors and windows.
  • Use insecticide-treated bed nets if mosquitoes cannot be excluded from your living area.
  • Wear permethrin-treated clothing.

If you develop symptoms similar to malaria when you are travelling or up to a year after you return home, see a health care professional immediately. Tell them where you have been travelling or living.

Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

There is a risk of hepatitis A in this destination. It is a disease of the liver. People can get hepatitis A if they ingest contaminated food or water, eat foods prepared by an infectious person, or if they have close physical contact (such as oral-anal sex) with an infectious person, although casual contact among people does not spread the virus.

Practise  safe food and water precautions and wash your hands often. Vaccination is recommended for all travellers to areas where hepatitis A is present.

The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.

 The flu occurs worldwide.

  •  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
  •  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
  •  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round.

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

In this destination, rabies  may be present in some wildlife species, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal.

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional.

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who will be working directly with wildlife.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

  • Learn more about food and water precautions to take to avoid getting sick by visiting our eat and drink safely abroad page. Remember: Boil it, cook it, peel it, or leave it!
  • Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
  • Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs.

Travellers' diarrhea is the most common illness affecting travellers. It is spread from eating or drinking contaminated food or water.

Risk of developing travellers' diarrhea increases when travelling in regions with poor standards of hygiene and sanitation. Practise safe food and water precautions.

The most important treatment for travellers' diarrhea is rehydration (drinking lots of fluids). Carry oral rehydration salts when travelling.

Typhoid   is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Risk is higher among children, travellers going to rural areas, travellers visiting friends and relatives or those travelling for a long period of time.

Travellers visiting regions with a risk of typhoid, especially those exposed to places with poor sanitation, should speak to a health care professional about vaccination.

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

  • Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
  • Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
  • Minimize exposure to insects
  • Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

To learn more about how you can reduce your risk of infection and disease caused by bites, both at home and abroad, visit our insect bite prevention page.

Find out what types of insects are present where you’re travelling, when they’re most active, and the symptoms of the diseases they spread.

There is a risk of chikungunya in this country.  The risk may vary between regions of a country.  Chikungunya is a virus spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Chikungunya can cause a viral disease that typically causes fever and pain in the joints. In some cases, the joint pain can be severe and last for months or years.

Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times. There is no vaccine available for chikungunya.

Zika virus is a risk in this country.

Zika virus is primarily spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can also be sexually transmitted. Zika virus can cause serious birth defects.

During your trip:

  • Prevent mosquito bites at all times.
  • Use condoms correctly or avoid sexual contact, particularly if you are pregnant.

If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, you should discuss the potential risks of travelling to this destination with your health care provider. You may choose to avoid or postpone travel.

For more information, see Zika virus: Pregnant or planning a pregnancy.

  • In this country, risk of  dengue  is sporadic. It is a viral disease spread to humans by mosquito bites.
  • Dengue can cause flu-like symptoms. In some cases, it can lead to severe dengue, which can be fatal.
  • The level of risk of dengue changes seasonally, and varies from year to year. The level of risk also varies between regions in a country and can depend on the elevation in the region.
  • Mosquitoes carrying dengue typically bite during the daytime, particularly around sunrise and sunset.
  • Protect yourself from mosquito bites . There is no vaccine or medication that protects against dengue fever.

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

  •   washing your hands often
  • avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
  • avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.

Tuberculosis is an infection caused by bacteria and usually affects the lungs.

For most travellers the risk of tuberculosis is low.

Travellers who may be at high risk while travelling in regions with risk of tuberculosis should discuss pre- and post-travel options with a health care professional.

High-risk travellers include those visiting or working in prisons, refugee camps, homeless shelters, or hospitals, or travellers visiting friends and relatives.

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)   is a virus that attacks and impairs the immune system, resulting in a chronic, progressive illness known as AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome).

High risk activities include anything which puts you in contact with blood or body fluids, such as unprotected sex and exposure to unsterilized needles for medications or other substances (for example, steroids and drugs), tattooing, body-piercing or acupuncture.

Understand [ edit ].

Cape Verde (population 550,000 in 2019) is 500 km from the west coast of Africa. The previously uninhabited islands were discovered and colonized by the Portuguese in the 15th century; they subsequently became a trading centre for African slaves and later an important coaling and re-supply stop for whaling and transatlantic shipping. Independence was achieved in 1975.

Most Cape Verdeans have both African and Portuguese ancestors.

The government declared in 2013 that the country's official name would not be translated into foreign languages and the country is now the Republic of Cabo Verde or simply Cabo Verde , although only time will tell if this change will enter common usage.

Climate [ edit ]

Cape Verde’s climate is temperate, with a warm, dry summer. Precipitation is meagre and falls between June and February, peaking in September.

Some islands see almost no rain: these are Sal, Boavista and Maio. The islands with most rainfall are Santiago, Fogo and Santo Antao.

Holidays [ edit ]

The national holiday is 5 July, Independence Day.

Tourist information [ edit ]

  • Visit Cabo Verde website

Talk [ edit ]

The official language is Portuguese , used in all official publications and announcements as well as in business, media and schools, but the local language is Cape Verdean Creole ( Kriolu kabuverdianu ), a Portuguese-based creole language with 90-95% of the words from Portuguese and the rest mainly from West African languages. It is divided into 9 dialects spoken on various parts of the country. Even though Kriolu is comprehensible to a skilled Portuguese-speaker, almost all people can also speak Portuguese as a second language. A considerable number of Cape Verdeans also speak English; basically, Kriolu is your first option, Portuguese second, English third.

It is a good idea to know some Kriolu or at least Portuguese, since even though young urban people are often quite proficient in English, this does not apply to old and rural people, and even those who can speak English will highly appreciate any attempt you do to speak Kriolu or Portuguese.

Get in [ edit ]

Entry requirements [ edit ].

Citizens of Angola , Benin , Burkina Faso , Côte d'Ivoire , Gambia , Ghana , Guinea-Bissau , Guinea , Hong Kong , Liberia , Macau , Mali , Mauritania , Mozambique , Niger , Nigeria , Senegal , Sierra Leone , Singapore , Timor-Leste and Togo do not require a visa to enter Cape Verde.

European Union citizens are also visa exempt, but have to pay an entry fee of approximately €30 . Pre-registration is possible at the EASE website of the Cabo Verde government for a faster entry through automated passport control (at least in the Nelson Mandela airport in Praia of Santiago as of July 2022).

Everybody else may obtain a visa on arrival at a cost of around €30 . The waiting queues for this option may be longer than for pre-registered visitors.

By plane [ edit ]

Cape Verde has four international airports:

  • Amílcar Cabral International Airport on Sal Island (IATA SID).
  • Nelson Mandela International Airport in Praia on Santiago (Cape Verde) (IATA RAI).
  • Aristides Pereira International Airport on Boa Vista (Cape Verde) (IATA BVC)
  • Cesária Évora Airport on São Vicente (IATA VXE)

These airports provide connections to Europe, Africa and the Americas. Not all the connections are visible to travel booking websites, it is usually worth checking with a travel agent.

From Europe [ edit ]

travel documents cape verde

Cape Verde is serviced through two types of flight connections: scheduled flights and charter flights (mostly reserved for all-inclusive vacations to the islands of Sal and Boa Vista (Cape Verde) . There are regular flights from Amsterdam Schiphol , Lisbon (daily), Madrid Barajas , Milan , Munich Airport , and Oporto .

Some specific connections to Cabo Verde are:

  • Cabo Verde Airlines . fly from Lisbon ( updated Aug 2022 )
  • TAP Portugal . fly from Lisbon ( updated Aug 2022 )
  • Royal Air Maroc . Fly from Casablanca ( updated Aug 2022 )
  • Thomson Holidays . You can fly direct to Santa Maria on Sal from London Gatwick , Glasgow and Manchester Airport on Astraeus and also with Thomson Holidays from Birmingham , Manchester and Gatwick . ( updated Aug 2022 )

From the Americas [ edit ]

There are regular weekly flights from Fortaleza (Brazil) .

From Africa [ edit ]

West Africa is also served.

By boat [ edit ]

There are only infrequent, expensive connections to the mainland by ship. On the other hand the islands are commonly visited by yachts crossing the Atlantic (see Hitchhiking boats ).

Get around [ edit ]

travel documents cape verde

Most road and sidewalk surfaces in Cabo Verde are made of large, rough, irregular, uneven and sharp cobblestones, which are often spaced wide apart and may protrude several centimetres from the ground. These surfaces are generally unsuitable for wheeled luggage, baby strollers, folding bicycles or anything with wheels smaller than those of a car or standard bicycle.

Transportation between islands is possible by plane and ferry. Plane tickets are more expensive than ferry tickets. If funds are not a constraint, Cabo Verdeans seem to prefer flights due to better reliability, shorter duration and lack of sea-sickness.

Timetables in Cape Verde are not to be taken too seriously - don't be too surprised if that boat departs ahead of schedule or if that flight suddenly gets postponed until tomorrow. This is important to consider if you decide to do some island-hopping. Due to weather and other conditions flights may be delayed or canceled. Carry your toothbrush with you and build in some buffer time to your planning especially if you need to meet an international connection.

As of July 2022, the COVID information website of the government claims that it is still required to pre-fill a health registration form to travel to Cabo Verde and from island to island. In practice, it seems that only vaccination certificates (triple dose required) or negative COVID test is required and checked.

As of July 2022, Best Fly Cabo Verde airlines has regular flights between the majority of the islands. Booking is possible through the website or local tourist agencies. Payments can be made via Credit Card when selecting the vinti4 payment options.

Tickets may be sold out days or weeks ahead - especially if there are more potential passengers when the ferry service is interrupted. Consider booking early, especially for critical connections. In case of emergency, some spaces of no-show passengers may be available. Go to the airport in the morning to be put on the waiting list to have the chance to gain such a space.

If you can afford to wait until you arrive, domestic tickets are cheaper if purchased in Cape Verde.

There are several fare categories as listed on the airline website . Flights can be rebooked for $2,000 ( escudos ) in some of the fare categories as listed on the tariff conditions in the website.

  • Cabo Verde Express

By ferry [ edit ]

There are ferry services between the islands. As of July 2022, all ferries are operated by CV Interilhas . Schedules and ticket booking possibilities are available on the website. According to Cabo Verdean locals, ferries seem to have reliability issues so it is advisable to check the website before departure and to have a backup plan. For the journey, the sea conditions may cause sea sickness so it is advisable to take the same precautions as on any ferry journey.

By taxi and aluguer shared transport [ edit ]

Nice, new taxis are available in the major cities and are not metered.

By car [ edit ]

Cape Verde's road network is underdeveloped in places, and roads are often unpaved, especially on the smaller islands. The main roads are asphalted. Road lighting is poor, so particular care must be taken when driving in the dark. The local traffic culture is unruly by western standards. Traffic speeds can be high. Drunk driving is common.

See [ edit ]

  • Game fishing
  • Kite surfing & wind surfing
  • Jetskiing and other water sports
  • Canyoning in Santo Antao

Buy [ edit ]

Money [ edit ]

Coins in Cape Verde are issued in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 250 escudos. Banknotes in Cape Verde are issued in denominations of 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000 and 5,000 escudos.

In the resort islands of Sal and Boa Vista, euros are commonly accepted, although you might receive change in escudos.

Money can be changed from all major currencies at the international airports at Sal and Praia. Bank branches at larger towns will also change money. Larger towns also have ATMs that will take Visa, MasterCard and Maestro.

High-end hotels will accept credit cards. Other hotels will expect cash although many mid-range ones will accept euros at a reasonably exchange rate (slightly worse than the banks). For everything else, expect to pay in escudos.

Costs [ edit ]

Since most goods are imported, the cost of living is moderate to high. On the island resorts of Boa Vista and Sal, the cost of living oftentimes can be compared to their Caribbean counterparts. The island of Santiago is reasonably the least expensive.

Eat [ edit ]

travel documents cape verde

Cape Verde has fantastic fresh seafood. Tuna is common, as is Wahoo - a white fleshed fish with similar texture.

  • Lagostada – a lobster dish
  • Cachupa - the national dish made with maize and potato. Fish or chicken commonly added for flavor.
  • Tosta mista - common toasted ham and cheese sandwich.

European food is common on all the islands. Italian is especially popular on Sal. Vegetarians can ask for omelets or salads.

Drink [ edit ]

Non-alcoholic drinks [ edit ].

Tap water may be contaminated due to incorrect storage (e.g. in containers on the roofs of buildings). Take the same precautions as in other regions with varying water quality. In case of doubt, bottled water is available in stores between $70 for a 1.5 l bottle to $400 for 10l Canisters.

Imported juices and soft drinks are available in these stores as well.

Alcoholic drinks [ edit ]

Local beer is a lager to drink ice cold, its name is Strela .

Red, white and rosé wines are grown and made in Fogo, e.g. under the Chã brand.

International beers and other drinks are available. These are imported from Portugal and other countries.

Sleep [ edit ]

There are plenty of hotels and guest houses throughout the archipelago. Though the largest hotels are based on the islands of Sal (Riu Funana and Garopa hotels--1000 rooms combined), and Boa Vista (Riu Touareg--881 rooms).

Learn [ edit ]

travel documents cape verde

There are 10 universities including institutes in the country. The largest universities are: Jean Piaget University of Cape Verde and University of Cape Verde.

Work [ edit ]

The Cape Verdean economy is largely service-based, i.e., most Cape Verdeans work in industries, hospitals, transportation and tourism related activities.

Stay safe [ edit ]

Crime rates are relatively low. The emergency number is 132.

UK health authorities have classified Cape Verde as having a risk of Zika virus transmission.

The WHO declared that as of 2024, malaria has been eradicated in the entire country, with no cases reported for over three years.

Stay healthy [ edit ]

In the resorts, the tap water is usually desalinated and safe to drink. In other areas, bottled water is cheap and commonly available.

Respect [ edit ]

People are polite and friendly: they will try to sell you something and if you refuse, they will invent stories about the hardship of their families. It is good to buy something, but important to bargain .

Connect [ edit ]

The telephone system is effective and improving.

The country also has one Internet service provider.

Mobile connectivity [ edit ]

There is mobile phone coverage in all cities and most towns. As of July 2022, 4G coverage is common in some populated areas such as Santiago and Fogo. Check with your provider as to the roaming costs. Alternatively, local prepaid SIM cards branded CVMovel and Unitel T+ (Tmais) are available widespread. As of July 2022, these can be charged with around $1000 for approximately 7 GB of data, unlimited calls into the same provider network and 15 minutes of calls into the other provider. Ask the personnel to activate the SIM card for you and to activate the prepaid tariffs.

General Travel Advice

Irish citizens do not require a visa to enter Cape Verde for stays up to 30 days.

A valid passport is required for travel to Cape Verde. Irish passports should have a minimum validity of 6 months. Passport cards cannot be used.

For more information on visas and passports, please see the Additional Information tab.

Visitors to Cape Verde are advised to follow the guidance of national and local authorities and stay fully informed of what's going on by monitoring local news and social media.

Irish health authorities have classified Cape Verde as a country where there is a risk of Zika virus transmission. Irish Citizens especially those with a weakened immune system or women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant are advised to follow guidance available on the website of the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) .

Irish Health authorities also categorise Cape Verde as one of the high-risk countries where the rates of hepatitis C are high. There is also a low risk of malaria in the capital city, Praia (Santiago Island). For more information and advice, visit the website of the HSE  .

As there is no Irish Embassy in Cape Verde, we are limited in the help we can offer you in an emergency. However, if you need assistance, you can contact the  Irish Embassy in Lisbon or the Duty Officer at the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin at +353 (0)1 408 2000.

Emergency Assistance

The best help is often close at hand so if you have problems, try talking to your local contacts, tour operator representative or hotel management.

You can contact the emergency services in Cape Verde on:

  • Police: 132
  • Fire brigade: 131

  • Follow us on twitter  @dfatravelwise  for the latest travel updates.

Safety and security

Terrorism

While the threat from terrorism is minimal, it is important not to rule out the risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks, which could be against civilian targets, including places frequented by tourists and expatriates.

Crime remains relatively low but you should take sensible precautions:

  • Don’t carry your passport unless absolutely necessary and leave a copy of your passport (and travel and insurance documents) with family or friends at home.
  • Avoid showing large sums of money in public and don’t use ATMs after dark.
  • Petty crimes like pick-pocketing or handbag snatching can occur, including on beaches. They particularly occur during festivals and street fairs, and in crowded outdoor market areas, particularly on the island of São Vicente, in Praia and on the island of Santiago
  • Avoid dark and unlit streets and stairways, and arrange to be picked up or dropped off as close to your hotel or apartment entrance as possible.
  • Lock doors and windows at night.

Reporting crime

If you’re a victim of a crime, report it to the local police immediately.

Road safety

Cape Verde has an extensive road system. On the islands of Santiago, Sal, and São Vicente, many urban and rural roads are asphalt. On the other islands, some roads are narrow, winding and poorly lit, and mostly cobblestone. During the rainy season, cobblestone roads are especially slippery, and mud and rockslides are common on roads that cut through mountains. Roads and streets often are unlit and driving at night is hazardous. Main roads are usually paved with cobblestones but can be narrow, winding and poorly lit. Drivers and pedestrians should exercise caution, particularly after dark.

Public transportation

Praia has three principal modes of public transport: taxi, city buses, and intercity commuter van service. The use of Intercity van service is strongly discouraged due to the bad driving habits of local residents. While official taxis are considered safe and reliable, passengers should still exercise good common sense and avoid sharing a taxi with strangers. In Praia, city buses and taxis are reliable, clean and in good condition.

Maritime Safety

Sea conditions can be treacherous and mariners should take extra care and seek local advice prior to travel. Advise local ports of arrival and departure times and provide relatives with your itinerary.

Local laws and customs

Remember, the local laws apply to you as a visitor and it is your responsibility to follow them. Be sensitive to local customs, traditions and practices as your behaviour may be seen as improper, hostile or may even be illegal.

Irish health authorities have classified Cape Verde as a country where there is a risk of Zika virus transmission, and advise for pregnant and women planning on becoming pregnant to postpone all non-essential travel.

Irish Health authorities also categorise Cape Verde as one of the high risk countries where the rates of hepatitis C are high. There is also a low risk of malaria in the capital city, Praia (Santiago Island). For more information and advice, visit the website of the HSE The Health Service Executive - Feidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte

Get travel and medical insurance

Before travelling, the Department strongly recommends that you obtain comprehensive travel insurance which will cover all overseas medical costs, including medical repatriation/evacuation, repatriation of remains and legal costs. You should check any exclusions and, in particular, that your policy covers you for the activities you want to undertake.

Vaccinations

Check what vaccinations you may need for your trip at least eight weeks before you travel. We can’t advise you on vaccinations, but you can get information about vaccinations from your local GP or an International Health and Travel Centre. Evidence of vaccination (in the form of a certificate) can be a requirement for entry to some countries.

Make sure you bring enough medication for your entire trip and for any unexpected delays. You may wish to also bring copies of your prescription in case you lose your medication.

Entry requirements (visa/passport)

Irish citizens do not need a visa to enter Cape Verde for stays up to 30 days. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months after the date of entry.

All passengers travelling to Cape Verde from overseas need to:

  • Pre-register on the EASE platform ( https://www.ease.gov.cv/ ) at least 5 days before their date of travel;
  • Pay the Airport Security Tax (TSA; Taxa de Segurança Aeroportuária ), which is 150 CVE (approx. €1.36 at time of writing) for domestic flights and  3400 CVE (€30.83) for international flights.

It’s advisable to take a number of photocopies of your passport with you when travelling to Cape Verde and you should carry a photocopy of your passport at all times during your stay.

If your passport is lost or stolen while you’re in Cape Verde you should contact the Irish Embassy in Lisbon . We’ll do our best to help you as quickly as possible but this can take some time. Your location and circumstances may limit the help we can give you.

What we can do:

• Issue an emergency travel document that will get you home;

• If required, provide advice on applying for new passport.

You will need a police report if you want to make a claim on your travel insurance. We will not provide you with a travel document without a police report

Embassy contact

Cape Verde Digital Nomad Visa: How to Apply [4 Steps]

travel documents cape verde

Another country joins the digital nomad movement: Cape Verde just introduced its digital nomad visa . Dubbed as the Cape Verde Remote Working Program, digital nomads can receive a temporary visa for a six-month stay with the option to renew.

Who wouldn’t want to spend their winters on one of the ten beautiful islands off the west coast of Africa that make up Cape (also known as Cabo) Verde? With ideal weather, white sandy beaches, fresh seafood, and music – lots of music – digital nomads are finding their new temporary homes on these islands.

The country is very affordable, and the visa fee is only 20€ to apply. (Plus another 34€ to leave the airport.)

By the end of this article, you’ll know everything about Cape Verde’s digital nomad visa , how to apply, and the documents you’ll need.

What is a Digital Nomad Visa?

A digital nomad visa is for remote workers, business owners, and freelancers who wish to live in a foreign country for longer than a tourist visa allows.

Technically, these visas are more resident permits, allowing digital nomads to live in the country.

To be eligible for a digital nomad visa , you must work for a foreign company (not one in the country where you’re living), own a business, or work as a freelancer with foreign clients.

This is perfect for digital nomads who want to settle down somewhere without worrying about border-hopping or overstaying their tourist visas.

Cape Verde Digital Nomad Visa Requirements

As with any type of visa, there are certain requirements you must be in order to apply. Below, you can determine whether or not you’re eligible for the Cape Verde digital nomad visa.

  • Valid Passport – Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months
  •   Remote Income – You must work as a freelance or self-employed individual for clients or a company outside of Cape Verde
  • 1,500€ Average Bank Balance – For the last six months, this must be your average bank balance
  • Proof of Health Insurance – International health insurance coverage is required for all applicants
  • Accommodations – Proof of booking accommodations in Cape Verde
  • Criminal Background Check – An official background check originated from your country of residence
  • Completed Application – Fill out the application and submit it online through Cape Verde’s portal
  • Visa Fee – The visa processing fee is 20€; an additional 34€ must be paid upon entering the country at the airport
  • Citizenship – You must be from countries of Europe, North America, Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), or Economic Community of West African States (CEDEAO)

Steps to Apply

Now that you know the requirements to apply for Cape Verde’s digital nomad visa, below are the steps to submit your application and receive the visa. It’s a fairly straightforward process and takes place primarily online.

Step 1: Submit Application

Complete the application and submit the necessary documents through Cape Verde’s online portal . These documents include:

  • Copy of passport bio page
  • Passport-sized photos with a white background
  • Proof of income or bank statement
  • Health insurance policy

Step 2: Wait for Processing

Your application will be processed within two weeks. You will receive an email with information about the next steps towards obtaining the visa.

Step 3: Gather Travel Documents

Before you can enter Cape Verde, you’ll have to gather some more documentation to show immigration when you cross the border. These documents include:

  • Additional Application Form signed and dated
  • Passport-sized photo with a white background
  • Copy of passport entry stamp
  • Proof of income (bank statements from the last 6 months or income receipts from the last 3 months)
  • Health certificate
  • Criminal background check
  • Copy of accommodation booking
  • Copy of visa approval letter
  • Visa fee of 20€

Step 4: Obtain Digital Nomad Visa

Once you have entered Cape Verde, you have 30 days to officially obtain your digital nomad visa and extend your stay for up to six months. Send an email to the Remote Working Program to arrange the delivery of your visa. It should take about 5 days.

Why Cape Verde?

Cape Verde is quickly becoming a new digital nomad hotspot rich in culture, stunning views, and great vibes. Nine out of the ten islands that make up the country off the west coast of Africa are inhabited and ready to welcome remote workers.

Digital nomads can rely on an impressive WiFi and mobile network while living and traveling around Cape Verde. You’ll always be connected. Coworking spaces are also popping up all over the country so you can focus and network at the same time.

When you aren’t surfing the web, you can surf the waves, enjoy other water sports, or relax on white sandy beaches. Plus, the warm and sunny weather is exceptionally welcoming, especially to those digital nomads who enjoy being outdoors.

Let’s not forget the food that is offered in Cape Verde! You can count on having some of the best seafood and fish meals in your life while staying in this beautiful country.

The cost of living in Cape Verde is also fairly affordable. On average, the monthly cost of living is around $800, with rent included! Accommodations and meals are economical and offer great value for their price.

One of the best things about Cape Verde is the friendliness of the residents. It’s common to nod or smile to people when passing them on the street, especially in the morning. You’ll feel instantly welcomed to the islands and part of the community in no time.

A Brief History of Cape Verde

With the decline in the slave trade, Cape Verde's early prosperity slowly vanished. However, the islands' position astride mid-Atlantic shipping lanes made Cape Verde an ideal location for re-supplying ships. Because of its excellent harbor, Mindelo (on the island of São Vicente) became an important commercial center during the 19th century.

Portugal changed Cape Verde's status from a colony to an overseas province in 1951 in an attempt to blunt growing nationalism. Nevertheless, in 1956, Amilcar Cabral, a Cape Verdean, and a group of Cape Verdeans and Guinea-Bissauans organized (in Guinea-Bissau) the clandestine African Party for the Independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde (PAIGC), which demanded improvement in economic, social, and political conditions in Cape Verde and Portuguese Guinea and formed the basis of the two nations' independence movement. Moving its headquarters to Conakry, Guinea in 1960, the PAIGC began an armed rebellion against Portugal in 1961. Acts of sabotage eventually grew into a war in Portuguese Guinea that pitted 10,000 Soviet bloc-supported PAIGC soldiers against 35,000 Portuguese and African troops.
