SZA Brings Out Cardi B and Phoebe Bridgers at Dazzling, Hit-Filled Madison Square Garden Show: Concert Review

To say that SZA made a huge splash with her hits-filled, nautically themed “SOS” tour concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Saturday would be a conceptually on-message but drastically understated statement: She performed 32 songs on a wildly elaborate seaside-themed stage that included a giant fake fishing boat, a dinghy that soared above the crowd and a lighthouse, brought out two fellow queens — rapper Cardi B and indie-rock titan Phoebe Bridgers, within 10 minutes of each other, no less — and played a crowd-pleasing, nearly two-hour-long set that had the audience out of their seats and singing along for virtually the entire show.

After a rousing opening set from Omar Apollo that primed the crowd, the concert was centered on the 23-track “SOS” — which has logged 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 since its release in December — but included many songs from her 2017 debut “Cntrl” as well as her prominent features like “All of the Lights” and “and “Kiss Me Closer” (although those songs’ collaborators, Kendrick Lamar and Saweetie, did not appear, after Cardi B and Phoebe B., no one was complaining: SZA and her five bandmembers, four dancers and the cast of hundreds required to create such a sonic and visual extravaganza soaring through the set’s 32 songs, quickly and seamlessly.

The show opened with a giant video screen portraying the seaside scene on the album’s cover, which then lifted to reveal SZA seated high above the stage on the diving board for “PSA”; the screen then dropped at the end of the song and showed a video of SZA diving off of the board into the water and launching the show.

She reemerged in the dock setting for a brawny run at “Seek & Destroy,” before moving through moody mid-tempo moments such as “Notice Me” (with chunks of “Conceited”) and Erykah Badu‘s “Bag Lady” morphing into “Blind.”

After SZA said, “This is the first time we’ve played this song onstage,” the brand broke into “Ghost in the Machine” and the crowd erupted when Bridgers joined in for her verse — but just minutes later, it exploded when Cardi, sporting a bright red dress and long, straight hair for an extended melding of her “I Do” with the GloRilla collab “Tomorrow 2,” with SZA providing color commentary.

From the boat, SZA soared through the grandeur of “Smoking on My Ex Pack”/ “Too Late” and the syn-drum snap of “All the Stars” before launching into a rock segment (complete with headbanging from her guitarist) of “F2F,” “Doves in the Wind,” and the clustered words and “Drew Barrymore.”

As the video screens erupted with stormy seas, cueing the shipwreck, the orange lifeboat lowered to the stage from the rafters and SZA soared dozens of feet above the crowd, singing the acoustic-based “Nobody Gets Me” and soulfully anthemic “Gone Girl” while moving all the way to the opposite end of the arena floor, where a 20-foot-tall lighthouse, complete with a spotlight moving across the crowd, had suddenly appeared.

She returned and was lowered onto the now underwater-themed stage (the giant boat had somehow completely vanished) for the concert’s last quarter. SZA ran fast and loose through the up-tempo electro-pop of “SOS,” the hard-strummed “Snooze” and the violent reds of “Kill Bill” and the anthemic emotionalism of “I Hate You,” which had hundreds of people raising middle fingers and singing along with the song’s “Fuuuuuuuck you!” refrain. But rather than ending on a vengeful note, the concert ended as it began, with SZA singing the concluding “Good Days” from the diving board, completing the song’s sunny theme by wearing a bright-yellow, feather-decked gown.

As the credits literally rolled on the video screen and the house lights came up, SZA ran back out onstage to thank the almost-hometown audience, adding a final, human touch to a wildly cinematic and technologically dazzling, but ultimately very human concert. As a musical, visual and emotional experience, SZA’s “SOS” tour will be hard to top — best of luck, Beyonce and Taylor.

Nicki Minaj announced the openers for her Pink Friday 2 World Tour’s second leg on Friday (August 16). The diamond-selling rapper enlisted Tyga and Bia , who released a Cardi B diss track two months ago, for the Gag City Reloaded Tour.

“#GagCityReloaded will be a beautiful, magical dream come true,” Minaj wrote on Instagram . “Better than the 1st half & that wasn’t easy to do. New looks, set list changes, other secrets, ummmm new music? Lemme think about it. Thank you to the team doing this with me again. They’re simply the best. To the guest artists who will come out in their cities, thank you in advance; and to these 3 TALENTS (who I have so much love & respect for) for taking the G6 to #GAGCITY just for the Barbz & me. @tyga @bia @skillibeng. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!”

She added, “Barbz, we’ve already made history prior to LEG 2. TOP 10 in HIPHOP TOURS OF ALL TIME already. To everyone who came out on the first leg to support: GOD BLESS YOU. I LOVE YOU. I DO. Come back.”

Nicki’s booking of Bia added a new wrinkle to the Harajuku Barbie’s longstanding issues with Cardi B. Bia enraged Cardi B by allegedly spreading infidelity rumors. Cardi B threatened to sue Bia.

“I’ma sue you and you got to come with receipts,” Cardi B declared. “And not social media receipts, court receipts. I will get every little f###### red penny that you ever f###### make b####. Every money that you make off your publishing. So, find something safe to do.”

Bia responded by releasing the diss track “SUE MEEE?” in June.

“Put it on your hubby since you love lying on your vows/I write all my verses, I can do this s### for hours/I be damned I let a n#### f### a b#### inside my house/Your money long and you split that, your n#### saying that’s ours,” Bia rapped.

Cardi B hasn’t filed a lawsuit against Bia as of yet.

Beyoncé tour 2023 at MetLife Stadium: Will Jay-Z or Cardi B be musical guests?

MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford is the place to Bey this weekend.

“I didn’t get a chance to see Michael Jackson ... I didn’t get a chance to see James Brown. I didn’t get a chance to see Tina Turner, but I got a chance to see Beyoncé tonight,” said R&B chanteuse Jill Scott after Beyoncé's July 23 show at Soldier Field in Chicago. “Oh my God y’all. Phenomenal is an understatement. That vocal ability, the charisma, the honesty, sincerity onstage. I don’t have the …. I’m touched.”

It's Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour , and shows take place Saturday, July 29, and Sunday, July 30, at MetLife. The concert is about 2½ hours long, split into six segments with more than 30 songs. Bey's latest album, “Renaissance,” is performed, as well as tracks from throughout her career and a few choice covers — including “I'm Going Down” by Rose Royce and “Before I Let Go” by Maze featuring Frankie Beverly.

The covers are a nod to the musical forebearers, and the staging is a futuristic tableau of Black pride ascendency, a celebration of Black queer music culture and Boss Girls positivity, according to reviewers.

Nobody's breaking Beyoncé's soul during this Renaissance.

Beyoncé uttered “the words that her mostly female, significantly queer, impressively diverse, sequin-clad and bedazzled cowboy hat-wearing audience longed to hear: 'I love you, Philadelphia,' " wrote Dan Deluca in the Philadelphia Inquirer after her July 12 show.

Better get out those cowboy hats, MetLife. There have been celebs aplenty in the audiences of tour shows, including Paul McCartney, Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, Dua Lipa, Kelly Rowland from Destiny's Child and many more, according to Billboard.

There have not been many guests on stage so far — unless you count 11-year-old daughter Blue Ivy Carter joining mom in the Beyhive Pit for several shows.

We have a feeling that if there's going to be any guest stars on stage for the Renaissance World Tour, it's going to happen at MetLife. After all, the intersection of Routes 3 and 120 in East Rutherford is the center of the world in the concert industry.

Here are six possibilities for guest turns at MetLife. Some are kind of obvious, others not so much.

Beyoncé's husband is a hometown hero from Brooklyn with a strong Jersey connection. Shawn Carter used to hustle in Trenton, where he attended Trenton Central High School. Jay-Z and Beyoncé co-headlined MetLife in 2018 for their On the Run II Tour.

Cardi B lives in Tenafly with her husband Offset and their kid Kulture. They're regulars at the American Dream entertainment and retail center, so they know their way around the Meadowlands. Cardi B and Beyoncé have had a friendly relationship over the years — Cardi appeared in a vid for the “Renaissance” single, “Break My Soul.” A Cardi B appearance at MetLife would solidify the union.

“My Power,” the 2019 single from “The Lion King” soundtrack, is performed on the tour — and co-songwriter Nija Charles is a Jersey girl from the Vauxhall section of Union Township. Charles has written hits for Cardi B, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, H.E.R., Maroon 5 and more, but a little hometown shine would sparkle into the night.

Fivio Foreign

Fivio Foreign, who headlined the 2022 Hot 97 Summer Jam at MetLife, sampled the Destiny’s Child’s hit “Say My Name” on his 2022 “What's My Name” single. The sample led to a collaboration of sorts between Fivio and Bey after the Queen told him to clean up the lyrics.

“She had to hear it,” said Fivio on Hot 97, according to thefader.com. “She heard it. It was a little vulgar, a little bit for her, at first. ... I cleaned it up a lot. It was like, ‘You can’t be talking about girls like that!' ”

This one is likely to happen. Blue Ivy Carter, the 11-year-old daughter of Beyoncé and Jay-Z, made her Renaissance World Tour stage debut on May 26 in Paris as part of the “My Power” dance ensemble. She's a hit. TikTok users are miming her moves, and even Lizzo did the Blue Ivy. She's not been on stage at every show, but a MetLife appearance would be a natural as Blue Ivy was born in New York City.

Aaron Rodgers

Rodgers, the new quarterback for the New York Jets, is a big music fan who attended the recent Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran concerts at MetLife. We're not sure if Rodgers is musically talented, but he does have his own record label, Suspended Sunrise Recordings. If Rogers attends the show, and if Bey invites him on stage, you can bet the HBO “Hard Knocks” cameras will be there to record all the action.

Cardi B Teases Huge Update On New Album And Fans Think It's Coming Soon

Cardi B 's next album is one of the most anticipated and long-awaited releases in mainstream hip-hop... And we're well aware that this headline sounds familiar. Nevertheless, she recently gave fans a huge update as to the progress of this release, indicating that she already took her album cover pictures and can't decide on which one to use. This is one of the most concrete actualizations we've received of this sophomore LP as of late, and one of the only ones that doesn't relate to its release date. While fans are still foaming at the mouth for a final word on that, this should still fuel a lot of excitement for die-hard supporters.

Unfortunately, these days have been unpredictably tough for Cardi B, as she recently spoke on a " freak accident " that almost jeopardized her pregnancy. "I was doing so good, like, so good," she told her social media followers concerning her pelvic injury. "Exercising, f***ing outfits put together, I had so much energy. Now I be in pain like a motherf***er. I can’t f***ing wear heels, I can't f***ing stand up, I can’t do s**t. Everything was going great, now a h*e is injured. S**t got me so f***ing tight. And the thing about it is, I’m not even a clumsy b***h. I’m not a clumsy person, and I bust my a** bro.

Cardi B's Sophomore Album Cover Arts Are In The Vault

Elsewhere, Cardi B also spoke on this being her " easiest pregnancy yet " despite sleepless nights and her baby kicking a whole lot. "If anybody knows where I could get a pregnancy waist trainer, a pregnancy faja, let me know,” she asked her Instagram Live viewers. “I need it right now 'cause this a** is not dropping. I swear to f***ing God, this a** is not dropping. It’s not really because of my stomach, of course, I just don’t want my a** to drop."

Meanwhile, another update that Cardi B teased at concerning her new album involved possible album titles . It's clear that she's teasing a lot of stuff out little by little, and at least giving fans the illusion of being a part of that process. We'll see how this all manifests, as the Bardi Gang hopes that it'll arrive sooner rather than later.

Cardi B Reveals She Had a 'Freak Accident' That Left Her 'Paralyzed' and Almost Caused a Pregnancy Loss: Report

The rapper recently announced she is pregnant with her third baby

Cardi B  is opening up about an intense medical scare she recently experienced.

The rapper, 31, spoke to fans in a recent X Spaces chat after announcing her pregnancy with her third child on Aug. 1, reportedly sharing that she recently experienced a "freak accident" that left her briefly "paralyzed" and almost caused a pregnancy loss.

“I had a f–king freak accident. I don’t know how something — well, it wasn’t little, it actually hurt,” the "I Like It" singer said without specifying details or a diagnosis.

“It doesn’t really happen often, but it become [sic] so big to the point I was literally paralyzed," she added. "And that little thing almost cost me my little one to come."

Fortunately, "it didn’t," she shared. "Yesterday I was feeling good. I came home, but I came home high as a kite.”

Cardi continued to update her fans on how she's feeling, saying, "Today, I woke up sober, honey. I’m dying, If I don’t feel good in four hours, I’m going to the hospital and I don’t give a f---."

"I’mma exaggerate this s--- so I can get more morphine. Morphine me down! I don’t give a damn," she added with a laugh.

Cardi initially announced she's pregnant and expecting her third baby on Instagram  on Thursday, Aug 1, just one day  after she filed for divorce from husband  Offset, 32, after six years of marriage. The former couple shares son  Wave Set , 2½, and daughter  Kulture Kiari , 6.

"With every ending comes a new beginning! I am so grateful to have shared this season with you, you have brought me more love, more life and most of all renewed my power!" Cardi wrote in her caption alongside a few photos of herself in a red dress, baring her belly.

"Reminded me that I can have it all! You’ve reminded me that I never have to choose between life, love, and my passion! I love you so much and can not wait for you to witness what you helped me accomplish, what you pushed me to do!"

"It’s so much easier taking life’s twists, turns and test laying down, but you, your brother and your sister have shown me why it’s worth it to push through!" she concluded her post.

Cardi B opens up about 'freak accident' that jeopardized her pregnancy

The rapper is pregnant with her third child.

Cardi B has explained that scary " freak accident " that she previously said almost caused her to miscarry.

"I was going down the stairs and I slipped a little," the rapper said Thursday on X Spaces, per PEOPLE . "I practically fell, but I was trying to prevent myself from falling, so I was holding myself on the railing. My foot still slipped, and I kind of busted my ass." After the fall, she "felt a weird jerk, like a pop, and I couldn't get up really."

The artist announced Aug. 1 that she's expecting her third child with rapper Offset, her estranged husband who she filed for divorce from one day earlier.

Cardi noted that she then felt pain around where she's carrying the baby, which is not unusual. She then fell asleep, but, when she awakened, she "felt like paralyzed."

"I couldn't move my bottom at all," she said. "Like, just moving my feet was hurting the bottom of my stomach. I couldn't move."

She went to the hospital and "found out that I tore a ligament in my pelvis and it's right where my baby's head is at."

After that, the "Up" artist said, she was suffering.

"I dilated and I was having contractions for every two minutes for a whole 24 hours. So they had to monitor me and I was in a lot of pain. I couldn't move for two days straight," she said.

She was directed to stay in bed and undergo physical therapy.

She hit back at people who had criticized her previously for having said that she needed morphine for her injuries.

"You don't even know what the f--- is going on or what I'm going through," she said.

The performer is already mom to daughter Kulture Kiari, 6, and 2-year-old son Wave Set, both of whom she shares with Offset. (He has three kids from past relationships.) The couple married in 2017. She filed for divorce in September 2020, but two months later they decided to stay together — until her July 2024 divorce filing.

Cardi posted a pair of photos on Instagram last week revealing her baby bump on the same day Billboard confirmed that the “Bongos” rapper has filed for divorce from her husband Offset for a second time; the couple share two other young children, daughter Kulture, now six, and son Wave, who is almost three.
