Tobacco and Marijuana Smoking Policy (U.S.)

Carnival Cruise Line is dedicated to the safety of all guests and crew. We want all our guests to have a safe, fun and memorable vacation.

Smoking is a fire and safety hazard on a ship. Consequently, it is strictly limited to specific exterior deck areas and in the casino when seated and playing.  All guests are expected to adhere to the following safety guidelines:

  •   All staterooms and suite accommodations, including outside balconies, are NON-SMOKING. This policy applies to all forms of smoking, including but not limited to cigarettes, cigars, pipes, vaporizers, electronic cigarettes and marijuana.
  • Carnival recognizes that some state and local governments in the U.S., and in the destinations we visit, might allow marijuana use. However, Carnival Cruise Line follows U.S. federal law, which strictly prohibits possession and use of recreational/medicinal marijuana and other illegal controlled substances.
  • Any violation of this policy will result in a $500 charge, per violation, posted on the guest’s Sail & Sign® account and may also result in the disembarkation of all guests in the stateroom.
  • Guests who are disembarked for violating our policy will be responsible for all financial charges and expenses to return home, and no refund of their unused cruise fare will be provided. Additionally, they may be prohibited from sailing with Carnival Cruise Line in the future.

Our smoking policy is included in Carnival's  Cruise Ticket Contract .   Follow the link for   ship specific smoking areas .

In keeping with U.S. federal law, the minimum age to purchase tobacco products is 21. This policy is for U.S.-based itineraries/ships only.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if a guest is caught smoking in a stateroom or balcony? They will be assessed a $500 charge, per violation, on their Sail & Sign® account. Information on this charge is included in Section 8 of Carnival’s Cruise Ticket Contract. The assessment of this charge does not allow a guest to continue smoking in his/her stateroom. If a guest is found to be in violation of our smoking policy, all guests in the stateroom may be disembarked from the vessel and risk not being allowed to sail on Carnival in the future.  Guests will be responsible for all financial charges and expenses to return home, and no refund of unused cruise fare will be provided.

What should guests do if they smell tobacco in areas where smoking is not allowed, or marijuana in any area? Guests who are concerned about other guests violating our smoking policy should contact our onboard Guest Services team, so we can address the situation. This will help avoid uncomfortable situations between guests.

What if a guest has a letter from a doctor saying that they are allowed to use marijuana for medicinal and/or therapeutic purposes?  Why is that prohibited? Marijuana on our ships is not allowed. While certain CBD products used for medicinal purposes may be legal in the US, they are not legal in all the ports we visit and therefore are also considered prohibited items. Guests will need to consult with their physician for other suitable alternatives.

Smoking Policy

Carnival Cruise Line is dedicated to the safety of all guests and crew. We want all our guests to have a safe, fun and memorable holiday.

Smoking is a fire and safety hazard on a ship. Consequently, it is strictly limited to specific exterior deck areas that can be monitored.

  • Carnival recognizes that some Australian states and territories may permit the use of medicinal marijuana under certain circumstances. However, Carnival Cruise Line’s policy strictly prohibits possession and use of recreational/medicinal marijuana and other illegal controlled substances.

Our smoking policy is included in Carnival's Cruise Ticket Contract.

TOBACCO & MARIJUANA SMOKING POLICY – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (AU)

There are lots of open areas on the ship. Why can’t guests smoke wherever they like in those open areas, including balconies and decks?

Smoking is both a fire and safety hazard. We have designated certain exterior deck areas for smoking. It is necessary to strictly limit smoking to areas that are frequently monitored by our crew. Our policy is focused on providing a safe environment while giving some options to our guests who want to smoke.

How does this compare to the smoking policy of other cruise lines?

Carnival’s smoking policy is consistent with the policy of other major cruise lines.

How does the policy apply to Carnival crew members?

Crew members are strictly limited to smoking in designated, exterior areas of the ship.

With the legalization of medicinal marijuana by some Australian states and territories, does Carnival recognize that some guests who might possess medicinal marijuana are not violating any law?

Carnival recognizes that some Australian states and territories might allow medicinal marijuana use under certain circumstances. However, Carnival Cruise Line’s policy strictly prohibits possession and use of recreational/medicinal marijuana and other illegal controlled substances. Violation of this prohibition is grounds for disembarkation.

What if a guest has a letter from a doctor saying that they are allowed to use marijuana for medicinal and/or therapeutic purposes? Why is that prohibited?

Marijuana on our ships is not allowed. Guests will need to consult with their physician for other suitable alternatives.

What happens if a guest gets caught smoking marijuana?

Any illegal substances will be confiscated and the guest will be reported to the appropriate authorities. Additionally, the guest may be subject to a $500 charge, risks being disembarked from the ship and may not be allowed to sail with Carnival in the future.

Is smoking allowed on cruise ships? A line-by-line guide

Erica Silverstein

Cruise ship smoking policies vary by cruise line, but typically smoking is not allowed except in a few designated onboard areas.

Can you smoke in cruise ship restaurants? No. What about cruise ship cabins? Never, unless you are vaping — and only a handful of ships permit that. Are you allowed to smoke on cruise ship balconies? Definitely not; it's a fire hazard. (The exception is Costa Cruises, which does allow smoking on outdoor balconies.) Can you light up on deck? Typically yes, but only in designated areas.

If kicking back with a cigar and a glass of Scotch is your idea of vacation, look for ships with dedicated cigar lounges. Just don't plan to get high on the high seas: You are not allowed to smoke marijuana on a cruise ship , even if you have a medical marijuana card or are departing from a state where recreational use is legal.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

What happens if you get caught smoking on a cruise? Most ships charge a $250 cleaning fee and reserve the right to take further action (including disembarkation). On Carnival Cruise Line, each violation is subject to a $500 fine, and you could also get banned from ever sailing Carnival again.

Read our line-by-line guide to cruise line smoking policies to learn where you can — and cannot — smoke on cruise ships.

Smoking is only permitted on the port side forward area of the pool deck on Azamara cruise ships. All other indoor and outdoor venues are nonsmoking. Smoking rules also apply to electronic cigarettes.

Carnival Cruise Line

carnival cruise lines smoking policy

Acceptable smoking locations vary by Carnival Cruise Line ship but include specific outside deck areas, as well as certain sections of the casinos when the person is playing. Smoking is not permitted in cabins and suites, including on room balconies. Smoking rules also apply to e-cigarettes.

Related: The ultimate guide to Carnival Cruise Line

Celebrity Cruises

Smoking is only allowed in designated outdoor areas on Celebrity Cruises ships. Smoking areas vary by ship but may include specific sections of outside promenade and sun decks and a corner of the Mast Bar or Sunset Bar. Smoking rules also apply to e-cigarettes.

Celestyal Cruises

Celestyal Cruises only permits smoking in designated outdoor areas. Its ships do not offer indoor smoking venues.

Costa Cruises

On Costa Cruises , smoking is allowed in outdoor smoking areas and on private balconies (this is, perhaps, the only cruise line to allow this); indoors, it's only permitted in dedicated cigar lounges. E-cigarette use is permitted indoors only in cabins and cigar lounges.

Smoking is mainly allowed outdoors in designated areas of the upper decks, pool area and promenade decks on Crystal cruises . In addition, cigarette, cigar and pipe smoking are only permitted indoors in the Connoisseur Club and in the VIP Casino (when playing and if requested).

Cunard Line

Cunard Line prohibits smoking indoors, except in the Churchill's Cigar Lounge (which is exclusive to cigar and pipe smokers). Cigarette smoking (as well as e-cigarettes and vaping) is only permitted in designated areas of the outdoor decks and is not allowed in outdoor dining venues or on cabin balconies.

Disney Cruise Line

Smokers can light up only in select onboard locations on Disney Cruise Line ships. On Disney Wish, smoking is permitted on Deck 4 (port side), but only from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., and on Deck 14 (forward, port side and aft, port side) at any time.

On Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, smoking areas include Deck 9 (forward, port side) and Deck 4 (starboard) outdoor areas (and only on this deck from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.).

On Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, smoking is permitted on Deck 4 (port side, aft) but only from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., the Deck 12 outdoor area by the Meridian Lounge (port side, aft) and Deck 13 near the Currents Bar (port side, forward).

Holland America

carnival cruise lines smoking policy

Most indoor areas of Holland America ships are nonsmoking, as are cabin verandas. Smoking areas vary by ship but may include the Sea View Bar area on all ships, Noordam's Oak Room and the Sports Deck by the Crow's Nest on Volendam and Zaandam. On select ships, players at the casino are allowed to smoke, but only when the ship is more than 12 nautical miles outside of the Netherlands. Smoking rules also apply to e-cigarettes.

Lindblad Expeditions

Lindblad Expeditions only permits smoking and vaping in designated outdoor smoking areas.

MSC Cruises

On MSC Cruises ' ships, smoking areas are designated by signs and the presence of ashtrays. Smoking (including e-cigarettes) is never allowed in cabins and on cabin balconies. While MSC Seashore does not have any indoor smoking areas, MSC Meraviglia, MSC Splendida and MSC Divina each have a smoking/cigar room inside.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line allows smoking in select indoor and outdoor locations. Indoors, smoking is permitted in the casino by active players; select ships have a dedicated smoking room within the larger casino. Passengers may smoke cigars — but not cigarettes or pipes — in the cigar lounges found on select ships. Norwegian Encore has a smoking room on Deck 8. Also, Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima have The Humidor Cigar Lounge (on Deck 7 and Deck 6, respectively).

Outdoors, smoking is permitted in The Haven Sun Deck forward and in the private garden and sun decks of Garden Villas. For everyone else, dedicated smoking areas are on select outdoor decks (these vary by ship) and on the starboard side of Spice H2O. Passengers are not allowed to smoke outdoors near food venues, children's areas, Vibe and Posh Beach Clubs and outdoor sports areas.

Oceania Cruises

Smoking is strictly prohibited in all Oceania Cruises ' cabins and suites, on balconies or in any area not specifically designated as a smoking area, which also includes all restaurants, lounges and the casino. Smoking is only allowed on Deck 9 in the forward starboard corner of the pool deck and on Deck 10 in the aft port corner of Horizons. Cigar and pipe smoking is only permitted on the forward starboard corner of the Pool Deck. The smoking policy applies to e-cigarettes.

Paul Gauguin Cruises allows smoking and vaping only in select outdoor areas. These include the outdoor area on Deck 5 forward, the outdoor starboard side of La Palette and the starboard side of Bar Du Soleil. No smoking is allowed indoors.

Ponant Cruises

Ponant Cruises does not permit smoking in any indoor venues. Passengers can light up in designated outdoor areas.

Princess Cruises

On Princess Cruises ships, passengers can smoke only in designated areas, which include cigar lounges, certain corners of the nightclub and the smoking section of certain outside decks. The casino is mostly a nonsmoking area, but smoking is usually allowed while playing specific slot machines — except on non-smoking nights. All smoking, including vaping and e-cigarette use, is prohibited in cabins and balconies.

Cigars and pipes may not be allowed in all smoking areas. The smoking policy applies to e-cigarettes.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean allows cigarette, e-cigarette, cigar and pipe smoking in specific outdoor areas. Look for signs and ashtrays. The Casino Royale is typically a smoking venue, with only a small nonsmoking section. (However, cruises from China and Hong Kong lack the nonsmoking section, while cruises from Australia and the U.K. do not allow smoking in the casino at all.) On Oasis Class vessels, smoking is not allowed in Central Park or the Boardwalk neighborhoods.

Bluetooth, portable and wireless speakers are only permitted within your stateroom and must be used respectfully and at reasonable sound levels and times of day. For everyone's safety, there are certain prohibited items that should be left at home. Prior to sailing, please review our Prohibited Items List .

Personal Safety Although everyone's safety is our number one concern, all guests should take responsibility for their own personal safety. You're on a moving ship, so please hold on to handrails when walking around. When out on deck, be mindful of wet surfaces (especially by the pool area), always wear shoes/sandals and dry-off before enjoying any of our outdoor sports equipment.

The ship's officers are responsible for your safety and making sure everyone on board feels welcome under our "Have Fun. Be Safe." motto. Please direct any concerns to our Guest Services team so that those matters can be addressed promptly. The captain and our officers have the authority to enforce our policies and make decisions in order to provide for a fun and safe environment for all. Consistent with our commitment to safety, disruptive behavior is not tolerated and any guest whose conduct affects the comfort, enjoyment, safety or well-being of other guests or crew will be disembarked at their own expense and banned from sailing on Carnival in the future.

Mobility Devices For the safety of all our guests and crew, mobility devices cannot be left in hallways or other public areas. Mobility devices must be stored in the guest's stateroom in a manner that does not block a clear and safe exit path from the stateroom. Unless you have reserved a fully accessible stateroom, mobility devices must be able to fit in a standard stateroom with a 22" entry doorway. Guests may be required to have their scooters sized at the time of check-in to ensure it fits in the stateroom. Scooters that do not fit in the stateroom will not be allowed on board. Should a guest be unable to make alternate arrangements to rent a smaller scooter or travel without it, he/she will be denied boarding and no compensation will be provided. Please review the Mobility Limitations Page for full details.

Items Overboard Carnival is committed to protecting the environment so that generations of cruisers can enjoy the ocean and the beautiful destinations we visit. Please closely follow guidelines for recycling, both on and off the ship, and be mindful of items going overboard when on open decks or balconies. We are obligated to report any items going overboard, intentionally or not, so please advise a crew member should that occur. Any willful or negligent act of discharging or releasing any unauthorized items overboard, without the express permission of the ship's staff may result in a $500 charge, per violation. Additionally, reimbursement cost of Carnival property will be posted on the guest's Sail & Sign ® account. Further, this may also result in the disembarkation of all guests in the stateroom. Please review our Items Overboard Policy .

Gratuities It is customary for guests to extend gratuities to the shipboard staff in appreciation for their hard work and exceptional service. To help you plan, we have provided recommended guidelines. Please visit the Service Gratuities page for more information.

Can You Smoke on a Cruise Ship? The Ultimate Guide

For smokers and non-smokers alike, knowing where smoking is (and isn’t!) allowed on your cruise is so important. In this guide to cruise line smoking policies, I’ll explain the guidelines for where it’s OK to smoke on a cruise and where it’s strictly forbidden.

Whether you’d prefer to steer clear of any secondhand smoke on your cruise vacation, or you’re a smoker looking for the right place to light up on your upcoming cruise, I’ll share all the basics you need to know.

Plus, I’ve included a line-by-line list of smoking policies for 39 cruise lines, as well as a handy chart to see the basic policies at a glance.

Can you smoke on a cruise ship?

In general, you can still smoke on a cruise ship, but only in designated areas. If you’re not sure where the smoking areas are, you can ask any member of the crew and they’ll give you directions.

carnival cruise lines smoking policy

Cruise lines have significantly tightened up their smoking policies over the last twenty years, but there’s still at least one designated smoking area on just about every ship. In fact, of the 39 cruise lines I researched, only one has any completely non-smoking ships!

Sorry, you’ll have to keep reading to find out which cruise ships are entirely smoke-free!

What can you smoke on a cruise ship?

Cruise lines allow passengers to smoke tobacco in their designated smoking areas. However, no cruise lines allow cannabis or CBD in any form on their ships. This applies to smoking and vaping materials, as well as edibles and topical ointments. Even with a prescription, it’s still not allowed.

Smoking cigars or pipes on a cruise

Most cruise lines allow cigar or pipe smoking, but often only in outdoor smoking areas or special cigar lounges.

carnival cruise lines smoking policy

If you like to relax with a cigar or a pipe, make sure you ask a crewmember which smoking sections you can use. It might not be all of them!

Vaping on a cruise

Using e-cigarettes (vaping) is usually only allowed in designated smoking areas. But there are a few exceptions!

A handful of cruise lines, including Cunard and Holland America, allow vaping in passenger staterooms. (Princess Cruises also used to allow vaping in staterooms, but that rule has recently changed.)

One cruise line, Regent Seven Seas, actually allows vaping in interior parts of the ship, except in the dining areas.

Smoking on stateroom balconies

With very few exceptions, smoking isn’t allowed on cruise ship balconies anymore. Although some cruisers try to sneak a smoke in the open air, it can be a safety hazard (and annoyed guests on nearby balconies will likely turn you in).

However, there are currently five cruise lines that still allow smoking on your balcony: Costa Cruises, Hapag-Lloyd, TUI, Fred. Olsen, and AIDA.

carnival cruise lines smoking policy

There are some ships on these lines that have non-smoking balcony sections—or even entire ships where smoking on balconies is prohibited—so be sure you book your stateroom on the right ship and in the correct section.

Smoking at cruise ship bars

Most bars on cruise ships—indoors and on deck—are non-smoking. There are some exceptions, like cigar bars and designated lounges, but not every ship has this feature.

But, many designated smoking areas are located close enough to bars that crewmembers will come around to take drink orders and deliver them right to you.

Smoking in cruise ship casinos

Many cruise lines with onboard casinos allow smoking in at least a section of their casinos. Smoking privileges are usually reserved for active players, and often at slot machines or select table games only.

carnival cruise lines smoking policy

Some cruise lines have specific times where the casino is entirely non-smoking. If all the ashtrays have suddenly disappeared from what was previously a smoking section, just ask a crew member. Odds are it’s the casino’s non-smoking time.

Today there are many cruise lines that have completely non-smoking casinos. Celebrity Cruises, Azamara, and Regent Seven Seas, among others, don’t allow smoking at any time in the casino.

Smoking during bunkering

If you’re unfamiliar with the term “bunkering”, it’s the ship’s refueling process. During certain port stops, your cruise ship will be topped up with fuel and smoking won’t be permitted on any of the exterior open deck areas.

The process usually lasts a few hours, and on some ships this means there are zero places where smoking is allowed during bunkering.

What happens if you’re caught smoking in a non-smoking area on a cruise ship?

Cruise lines are very strict with their smoking policies, and can assess hefty fines for people who are caught smoking in non-smoking areas. They can even kick you off the ship at the next port!

carnival cruise lines smoking policy

And no, you won’t get a refund if you’re disembarked for breaking a cruise line policy. You’ll also need to find your way home at your own expense—not a fun way to end your vacation!

Buying cigarettes or cigars on a cruise ship

Most larger cruise ships sell cigarettes and cigars on board. You can usually ask for cigarettes at any of the ship’s bars. If the ship has an indoor smoking lounge or cigar bar, you can often buy cigars there.

The onboard duty-free shops also usually carry cigarettes by the carton and cigars by the box. However, some cruise lines will hold your duty-free items until the last night of the cruise.

You must be at least 21 years old to purchase, possess, or use tobacco on cruises that begin in U.S. ports. For sailings embarking from most other ports, the minimum age is 18 years old.

Tip: Although you can usually buy cigars or cigarettes, lighters and matches can be hard to come by on board. Be sure to bring extras before you sail.

Best cruise lines for non-smokers

If you’re a non-smoker and you really don’t want to be around cigarette smoke, many cruise lines do a fairly good job keeping the designated smoking areas hidden away.

But smoking areas (especially on large cruise lines with a variety of ship classes) can vary widely from one ship to another. You might find that the smoking area on one ship is so far from the action that you’d never know it was there. But another ship on the very same line might allow smoking on half of the pool deck! (I’ve noticed this on both Carnival’s and Norwegian’s fleets as examples.)

Some cruise lines also allow smoking in their casinos, and that smoke tends to travel. If you’re a non-smoker who likes to play in the casino (or you just want to avoid wafting smoke), these cruise lines have entirely non-smoking casinos:

Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line

Celebrity cruises, celestyal cruises, cunard line, marella cruises, oceania cruises.

  • Regent Seven Seas

Virgin Voyages

Overall, the best cruise lines for people who want to avoid smoke on their cruise vacation include:

Disney Cruise Line

Seadream yacht club.

  • Viking (Ocean and River)

Windstar Cruises

Remember I mentioned that one cruise line has a couple of non-smoking cruise ships? It’s luxury cruise line Seabourn. They operate two expedition ships, Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit , that are completely non-smoking.

Read more about what Seabourn has to offer in my article Which Cruise Lines Have All-Inclusive Cruises?

What ships have the most smoking areas

Hi Linda, the cruise lines that have the most smoking areas on their ships are Costa Cruises, Hapag-Lloyd, TUI, Fred. Olsen, and AIDA - simply because they permit smoking on stateroom balconies. If you're a smoker and you're not planning to cruise on one of these lines, consider looking at Carnival, Princess, NCL, Royal Caribbean, or Holland America. You'll generally find at least a couple of smoking areas on each of their ships, and most of their ships allow smoking in the casino (with the exception of Australia-based ships). Hope this helps!

Cruise Line Smoking Policies: A Smoker’s Guide to Cruising

by The Cruise Web Team October 3, 2019, 11:41 am

Many people are aware that cigars are enjoyed by many-a-passenger on cruise ships, but can you smoke cigarettes? What about vaping? And hey, its 2019, what’s the deal with cannabis and cruising? As for that last one, it’s a big no-go, and for good reason. While marijuana has been legalized in many states in the United States, it is still federally banned and all cruise lines listed err on the side of caution and make it very clear that any possession or use of illegal substances will result in immediate disembarkation and any travel expenses incurred as a result are solely the responsibility of the passenger. While enjoying your cruise, you’re often free to light up, given you follow ship and cruise line policies! And be aware that cruise lines take the following policies very seriously, as cigarette smoke can be a health and safety hazard, or simply retract from the experience of others.

Smoking Policies by Cruise Line

AmaWaterways Smoking is permitted outside only, on the aft side of the sun deck. These policies apply to all smoking devices, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers.

Avalon Waterways Smoking is permitted outside only, with the area dependent on destination. In Europe and South America, smoking is only allowed on the sky deck. And if you’re sailing with Avalon on the Mekong or Ganges River, smoking is permitted only in designated areas. These policies apply to all smoking devices, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers.

Azamara Smoking is permitted on the port side, forward area of the pool deck. All other areas of Azamara ships and Azamara land tours are strictly smoke-free. These policies apply to all smoking devices, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers.

Carnival Cruise Line Smoking is permitted in select areas of each Carnival ship, of which a list can be found here . In general, smoking is limited to specific outdoor areas and certain nightclubs and casino spaces onboard. These policies apply to all smoking devices, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers.

Celebrity Cruises Celebrity Cruises has designated certain areas of the ship as “smoking areas.” Generally, smoking is not permitted except in designated areas. Smoking is not permitted inside any guest stateroom; nor on any guest veranda. These policies apply to all smoking devices, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers.

Crystal Cruises (Ocean and River) Aboard all Crystal ships, smoking is allowed in designated smoking areas only. Smoking is not allowed in public rooms, suites or any area that is not designated as a smoking area. Indoor smoking is permitted only in the Connoisseur Club smoking lounge (aboard Crystal Mozart , Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony only) and upon request, in the VIP Casino (during play). Smoking is prohibited in all other indoor areas of the ship, including all other public rooms, lounges, corridors and restaurants, as well as all staterooms, suites and verandahs. These policies apply to all smoking devices, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers. Permitted Smoking Areas (Including Electronic Cigarettes, Cigars and Pipes):

  • Deck 11, aft Crystal Serenity
  • Seahorse pool area, port side only (cigarettes and e-cigarettes only)
  • Promenade Deck, port side only (cigarettes and e-cigarettes only)

Cunard Smoking (including electronic alternatives) is not permitted in staterooms, on stateroom balconies or in public rooms. You will find designated areas on the open decks, where smoking is permitted. The only exception to this is Churchill’s Cigar Lounge, which is reserved for cigar and pipe smokers only. All restaurants are non-smoking, and this includes outdoor dining alternatives. Electronic cigarettes and vaporizing devices, including those which do not emit smoke/vapor, are permitted in designated smoking areas only.

Holland America Line All staterooms, showrooms and most other indoor areas are designated non-smoking. No smoking of any kind will be permitted on any stateroom verandah. Electronic cigarettes are not permitted in staterooms or in other public areas of the ship other than designated smoking areas. Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed anywhere inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed. The designated smoking areas for all ships are as follows, unless otherwise noted:

  • On  Koningsdam , and  Nieuw Statendam , smoking is allowed on the port side only.
  • Sun Bar on  Koningsdam and  Nieuw Statendam
  • Sports Deck forward and aft of Crow’s Nest on starboard side on  Maasdam ,  Veendam ,  Volendam ,  Zaandam ,  Rotterdam and  Amsterdam

MSC Cruises Smoking (including e-cigarettes) is not permitted in staterooms, on stateroom balconies and anywhere not expressly indicated by signage and ashtrays.

Smoking cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars and pipes is permitted in outdoor public guest spaces and open decks where designated by the ship’s management based on the ship’s specific characteristics and arrangement. Smoking, including electronic cigarettes, is prohibited in or near venues serving food, the jogging track, outdoor sporting venues, The Haven outdoor areas and children’s pool areas. On ships with The Waterfront, smoking is permitted on the starboard side excluding near any food service areas. Active Casino players may smoke cigarettes in the Casino during gaming hours. Cigarette smoking is not permitted in any other indoor venue or location. Electronic cigarettes cannot be used in public areas where there is a No Smoking policy in force; simply because these cigarettes look so realistic and therefore other guests’ perception is that Norwegian is not enforcing the No Smoking rule.

Oceania Cruises Designated Smoking Areas are available on the forward, starboard corner of the Pool Deck and in the aft, port corner of Horizons. These areas are comfortably furnished and conveniently located near food and beverage areas. Smoking is expressly forbidden in all staterooms and suites, on verandas, or in any areas of the ship other than officially Designated Smoking Areas. All areas other than those specified as Designated Smoking Areas will remain smoke-free. This includes all guest suites and staterooms, verandas, restaurants, public areas, the Casino and all other areas of the ship. In recent years, the cruise industry has taken significant steps towards creating a more enhanced and enjoyable onboard experience for all passengers. One area where this is particularly evident is in the implementation of new smoking policies. Carnival Cruise, one of the leading cruise lines in the industry, has recently unveiled its latest smoking policy aimed at providing a healthier and more enjoyable environment for all guests.

Under the new policy, Carnival Cruise has designated specific areas on their ships where smoking is permitted. These areas are carefully selected to minimize the impact on non-smoking guests, ensuring that everyone can fully enjoy their cruise experience. By restricting smoking to designated areas, Carnival Cruise is able to create a more comfortable and pleasant atmosphere for all guests.

One of the key benefits of the new smoking policy is the improvement of air quality onboard. By confining smoking to designated areas, the cruise line is able to maintain cleaner and fresher air throughout the ship. This is especially important for non-smoking guests who may be sensitive to smoke or have respiratory issues. With improved air quality, all guests can breathe easier and fully enjoy their time onboard.

To further enhance the onboard experience, Carnival Cruise has also implemented a comprehensive smoking cessation program. This program aims to support those who wish to quit smoking and provide resources to help them succeed. By offering assistance and guidance, Carnival Cruise is not only prioritizing the health and well-being of their guests but also actively encouraging a smoke-free lifestyle.

It is worth noting that the new smoking policy is not meant to discourage smokers from cruising with Carnival Cruise. Instead, it is designed to create a balanced and inclusive environment where both smokers and non-smokers can coexist harmoniously. By providing designated areas for smoking, the cruise line ensures that smokers can still enjoy their habit while minimizing the impact on others.

For those who are considering a Carnival Cruise, it is important to familiarize oneself with the specific smoking policy of the ship they will be sailing on. By understanding the rules and regulations, guests can ensure that they adhere to the guidelines and have a pleasant experience onboard.

To learn more about Carnival Cruise’s latest smoking policy and the designated smoking areas on their ships, it is recommended to visit their official website. The website provides detailed information on the policy, including the specific locations where smoking is permitted. Additionally, guests can find resources on the smoking cessation program and access helpful tips for quitting smoking.

Carnival Cruise Line bans 1 onboard activity, but not another

C ruise ships have different rules than land-based hotels and entertainment venues. Some of those rules are practical. You can't, for example, light a candle in your cabin.

On land, a candle may help set a romantic mood with only a small chance of burning down your house, but on a cruise ship, the dangers are much more significant. A small fire can become a catastrophe so candles, power strips, curling irons, and clothes irons, among many other things are banned on cruise ships.

Related: MSC Cruises makes bold moves to take on Carnival, Royal Caribbean

Cruise ships also have very specific rules when it comes to smoking. You can never smoke in your cabin or on a cabin's balcony. That's partially due to the risk of a fire and partly due to how smoke travels.

Most regular cruisers have experienced someone breaking the smoking rules on their balcony, Smome travels up and smoking in places where it's not allowed generally leads to other passengers calling security and the penalty for being caught could be anything from a warning to being thrown off the ship.

Both Carnival Cruise Line ( CCL ) and Royal Caribbean allow smoking in parts of their casinos. Royal Caribbean does have small non-smoking casinos on its Oasis-class ships while its Celebrity Cruises line only allows smoking in a small section of its pool deck.

The two rival cruise lines, however, both have strict rules when it comes to gambling.

Carnival asked a key question on onboard rules

If you walk around a cruise ship, you will usually see people playing various games. Some play card games, while others have packed dominos, board games, and other types of games. Carnival and Royal Caribbean ( RCL ) encourage gameplay — they even hard card/game rooms on some ships — but there are certain rules.

Carnival brand ambassador John Heald recently responded to an onboard controversy involving gameplay.

"Why has LRC been banned? Left Right Center is a game played by hundreds of Carnival cruisers every week on your ships. I ask because according to Cruise *** website, the game has been banned from the ships," wrote "V" on Heald's Facebook page. "We’ve played this game with my friends who cruise with us for years. Why this game and not others? Please explain."

The poster followed their question with threats and anger.

"This is the kind of rule that will turn Carnival cruisers away and to other cruise lines. This is being done to line the pockets of the casino. Just admit it and stop being a fool," they wrote.

Carnival makes its gambling policy clear

Heald has addressed this issue before, but he made it clear in his response that the game is not the issue.

"Thank you 'V' and the game itself has not been banned. Playing for money on any game outside of the casino is strictly not allowed. No exceptions, even for quarters as I may have misspoken about a few days ago," Heald wrote.

This post came after an incident where a number of passengers had been playing the dice game for money on one of Carnival's ships. Heald shared the rules again because he saw some media outlets getting the cruise line's policies wrong.

"I saw some of the cut-and-pasting news sites who report on my posts and repost them on their page had headlined we had banned the game. We have not. You can play any game you wish but not for money. And to suggest that this is so that money will be spent in our casinos is silly billy nonsense," he added.

The post was largely supported by Heald's Facebook followers.

"I love it when they say 'this will turn people away.' These are not real problems that are going to stop people from cruising. That statement should only be allowed if John stated that the entire ship was removing all food or they would no longer have stateroom doors," Stephen Phillip Hawker posted.
