For those of you who have been following Dexter’s dog-friendly vacations , you probably already know that Dexter loves his boat rides! Whenever we visit a dog-friendly city with a body of water, we always look for a boat tour, and Chicago was no different. Not only did we feel the need to find a boat tour, we also chose Shoreline Sightseeing once again! You see, we took our first ever boat tour with Shoreline Sightseeing when we visited Chicago in 2013 and had such a great time, we felt the need to do this tour justice and write a full article about our experience. 🙂
Watch our ride and don’t forget to subscribe !
We decided to take the Architecture River Tour so we could really get a feel for the Chicago skyscrapers. We picked up our tickets early so I had plenty of time to take photos of Dexter and could be first in line. I wanted to get that front row seat to allow plenty of foot space for Dexter and his pal Levi to rest during the ride. All the folks on staff at Shoreline Sightseeing were very friendly and helpful. Not only were they dog-friendly , but the staff doted on the dogs, which the pups always appreciate.
Shoreline Sightseeing Architecture Tour did not disappoint! This 75-minute dog-friendly Chicago boat tour was full of surprises. I was looking forward to a relaxing evening viewing the amazing skyscrapers, but had no idea that our tour guide Ben would do such an amazing job narrating and explaining about each building, including history and architecture design styles. And he was a hoot and so entertaining! I think one of my favorite things about Ben’s insider’s glimpse into the buildings is that I could tell he enjoyed what he was doing and truly knew what he was talking about. It was a real experience.
How did the dogs enjoy their Chicago boat cruise? After all the air sniffing, they were lulled to sleep. These boys are so relaxed during their rides, they go right to bed. Something about the gentle rocking of the boat, the lake breeze, and the scent of the open water just mesmerizes these boys into a deep relaxation. It’s a great way to end our dog-friendly Chicago trip .
Whether you are looking for dog-friendly things to do in Chicago or want to leave Fido at home, Shoreline Sightseeing has the perfect cruise for you! Plan a group trip, architecture tour, or even a fireworks tour with Shoreline—they have something for everyone. Tell them Dexter sent you.

I love this! I’ve been to Chicago several times but never with my dog! I would love that!
🙂 Traveling with a dog can really bring out some fun adventures.
I am just a few hours from Chicago and love going to the city. What a great activity to share with your beloved pet!
Lucky! I’d love to be closer to this amazing city. The Shoreline Sightseeing tour was a blast and so family friendly.
We were just in chicago and it felt like a very dog friendly city. Even our hotel had so many cute pups!
🙂 How sweet!
Oh my gosh, this was wonderful. I’m visiting Chicago in the spring and I take my golden retriever, Charlie, everywhere. I’ll definitely be back to your blog for more pet travel tips. Love it! Thanks so much!
Thanks, Katie! 🙂
This is so cool for pet owners. I had no idea the city of Chicago was so pet friendly.
🙂 It really is. We had a lot of fun adventures.
That’s so cool that you can take a pet on the cruise. We’ve been to Chicago so many times and never realized it!
🙂 Shoreline Sightseeing is dog-friendly and we had a wonderful time.
I am seeing more and more dog-friendly locations all over. We search them out in our area, events, and accommodations too. Great list!
Thanks. Yes, I always look for dog-friendly adventures before I travel. Shoreline was a great find!
I wouldn’t call my dog adventurous. Around here we are limited to the places we can bring our dogs, plus it’s good to be considerate where large groups of people might be around because of allergies and fears.
Agree. We always keep the dogs by our sides, no sniffing others, no scratching and well-groomed.
Shoreline Sightseeing sounds fun! It’s so cool that they allow you to bring your fur baby!
It was a blast. Even if you don’t have pets, the crew was stellar and so fun.
What a cute dog! And that would be fun / nice to be able to travel and take pet with you.
Thanks, Alicia. It’s so much fun taking Dexter on our trips.
Omg how cute is this?!?! I love it that more and more things are becoming pet friendly!!! It’s about time
Thanks, Courtney! Me too. Us pet parents can spend money on services too. 😉

Dog friendly fun tour!
Jim was awesome! The tour was both entertaining and educational. Bonus that dogs ride for free! Our dog loved the tour as well.
Adam, our docent, was excellent. He was obviously very passionate about Chicago and it’s history. He also made the tour very fun.
Great value, excellent cruise, our guide Nathan was very knowledgeable and interactive, Great views of all the buildings and informative history. Super picture opportunities
This is a must-do for anyone visiting Chicago! I have a layperson's interest and knowledge of architecture and I was blown away by the information provided on this tour. Antonio is a fantastic guide and peppered the tour with fun stories, while also giving time and space for us to admire the sights as we cruised along. If you get a chance to go at sunset, it's incredible to see the city gradually light up along the river. I went with my partner and family, and we all said we'll remember this tour for ages! Highly recommended.
This tour was recommended by several people and I am glad we did it. Our tour guide was awesome and very knowledgeable. As I continue to look at the architectural I look at them differently now, THANKS!! We were able to take some awesome pictures.
Excellent tour of the Chicago river way. Loved seeing the buildings lit up at night. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and did an excellent job.
Your guide to Chicago lake and river cruises
One of the best ways to see Chicago is from the water. The city is home to two stunning waterfronts — the Chicago River and Lake Michigan — and each offers plenty of cruise options. Admire the skyline on a lakefront cruise, learn about the city’s iconic architecture on a Chicago River cruise, enjoy dinner and dancing aboard an all-glass vessel, sip cocktails on a tiki-themed boat, paddle your own kayak — the options are truly endless. Here’s your guide to Chicago lake and river cruises, boat tours, dinner cruises, and beyond.
See it all with Shoreline Sightseeing
One of Chicago’s classic cruise options, Shoreline Sightseeing covers all the bases. Their ultra-popular Architecture River Tour takes you on all three branches of the historic Chicago River takes you past dozens of landmark buildings.
They also offer skyline lake tours, plus specialty cruises and holiday events. Hop on a boat at Navy Pier or on Michigan Avenue.
Dine on the water with City Experiences
City Experiences dining cruises are the perfect way to create a memorable moment in Chicago. Choose from a river or lake dining cruise, complete with delicious cuisine, cocktails, and entertainment.
Their glass-enclosed river vessel is particularly stunning. It offers passengers panoramic views of the city’s most iconic buildings as you glide along the Chicago River. They also offer lakefront brunch and dinner cruise options that depart from Navy Pier.
Entertain the family with Wendella Boats
For three generations, Wendella Tours and Cruises has been cruising the Chicago waterways. With its variety of tour options, cruise times and lengths, and a heated, enclosed cabin, Wendella is a great choice for families looking for flexibility. Choose from lake & river architecture, sunset cruises, and more.
Admire architecture with Chicago’s First Lady
Around the world, Chicago is known for its outstanding architecture, and it’s easiest to admire the city’s legacy from the water. By partnering with the Chicago Architecture Center , Chicago’s First Lady offers the most comprehensive tour of the skyline — docents must train 100 hours before they can lead tours.
Speed across Lake Michigan on Seadog Boat Tours
Are you up for a thrill? Race across Lake Michigan on SeaDog Cruises, featuring 30 minutes of high speeds and exhilarating twists and turns. Come prepared to get splashed.
SeaDog also offers lakefront speedboat tours and a river/lake architecture tour, featuring views of Chicago’s iconic Buckingham Fountain, Grant Park, Museum Campus, and more.
Live it up on an Island Party Boat
Looking for a party? These tiki-themed boats are always a good time, offering drink packages, stellar views, and fun vibes. You can hop on an Island Party Boat at Monroe Harbor or the Chicago Riverwalk, which is also where you’ll find their beach-inspired bar Island Party Hut. Choose from a river cruise, lake cruise, tacky tour guide cruise, or even a dueling pianos cruise.
Go back in time with Chicago Fireboat Tours
Step onto a real, historic fireboat and get ready for a unique experience with Chicago Fireboat Tours . The river tours are given aboard a real piece of Chicago history — a retired fireboat that patrolled the Chicago from 1937 to 1981. Tours are led by expert docents and include historic and sunset options.
Splurge on a Free Spirit Yacht Cruises
Looking to splurge a little? These private yacht charters are the way to go. The spacious yachts comfortably fit up to 49 or 120 people, making them the perfect option for a large celebration or an intimate gathering. Premium bar and catering packages round out the experience.
Explore the Chicago River with Urban Kayaks
If you’re ready to ditch the captain and explore the water on your own, then it’s time to grab a paddle at Urban Kayaks . You’ll go through a brief training session before you hit the water, but you’re free to paddle the river or lake at your own pace. Or join in a guided tour to catch the sunset, fireworks, or historic highlights. Rentals are available at the Chicago Riverwalk or Monroe Harbor.
Rent an electric boat
Chicago Electric Boat Company offers fun and unique ways to get out on the water, including donut boats, retro boats, and even a bike boat that your group can pedal down the Chicago River. Rental locations include Marina City, the Chicago Riverwalk, and Rockwell on the River in Avondale.
See the skyline aboard Mercury Cruises
While Chicago’s summer fireworks are already fun to watch, it’s an entirely new experience when you’re on a 3D tour. Before the show, you’ll cruise around the lake and see some of Chicago’s famous landmarks.
Mercury Cruises also offer Urban Adventure, Canine Cruises, and Chicago by Night tours.
Check out Chinatown via Chicago Water Taxi
Hop on! The Chicago Water Taxi is a fun and cheap way to get around Chicago. The Water Taxi stops at Ogilvie Transportation Center, Chinatown, Goose Island, the Chicago Riverwalk, Michigan Avenue, and River North. Get a one-way ticket for $6 or an all-day pass for $10. America’s Best Pet Friendly Boat Tours
- By Amy at GoPetFriendly.com
- July 19, 2022
From whale watching to island hopping to sunset cruises, some trips wouldn’t be complete without setting sail. Make sure you can bring Fido and not miss a thing on these pet friendly boat tours across the country!
Including your pet when you travel to new places makes the trip more fun! But to really experience some destinations, you need to get out on the water. To make the most of your vacation, we’ve gathered information on America’s best pet friendly boat tours.
Tips for Taking Your Pets on Boats
While many ferries, charter cruises, and boat tours are pet friendly, some are not. And businesses change their policies without notice — so always verify the pet policy when making your reservation.
Pets should always wear a life jacket when aboard sailboats, canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards. When on larger vessels, like ferries, you might not feel it’s necessary for your pet to wear his life jacket, but at least have one with you in case of emergency.
Visit our Amazon store to learn about more products we rely on to make traveling with pets easier, safer, and more fun!
On most pet friendly boat tours, four-legged passengers need to be on the outside decks, and that’s where the views are, so you’ll want to be there, too! Before booking your trip, check the weather to be sure you’ll be comfortable. If the forecast calls for sun, remember that metal decking can get hot. Pack your pup’s protective boots so he doesn’t burn his paws.
Of course, you’ll always want to bring plenty of drinking water and a bowl for your pet. Being on the water is thirsty business!
