Top 5 bicycle tours of Chile

Chile’s glorious terrain is rich with colour, lakes and waterfalls and the best way to see them up-close is to cycle through its lands. It may seem like an arduous feat, but there are many ways you can cycle through Chile, enjoy the landscape, wineries and beaches all at the same time.

What’s great about travelling by bike is the freedom. You can simply stop anywhere you want and take photos, and you can rest-assured that your travelling is not impacting negatively on Chile’s unimaginably beautiful landscape.

Here are the top five bicycle tours you should take to see Chile at its finest:

BikeTours

Lakes And Volcanoes District

Take to Chile’s southern region by bike and see the volcanic rocks and glistening lakes from the most natural mode of transport of them all – a bicycle. It might seem like an impossible feat to cycle across the glacial landscape of the south, but in fact the terrain of ripe farmland and dense forest is the perfect ground for a cycling adventure. Get close-up to the spectacular Andes mountains, as well as some of the region’s most mesmerizing national parks. You can also cycle close to the Lanin Volcanoes, through the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve and the newly-paved roads that run around the stunning Lake Ranco – taking the old German settlers route. The climate is also perfect for cycling, at around 65 degrees most of the year.

Puerto Varas Mountain Bike tour

Cycle the border

Take to the border between Chile and Argentina by bike and see some of the region’s most stunning sights along the way, including glaciers, national parks and ancient forests. The Andes mark the stretch between the two countries, and this tour takes you along some of the original indigenous trails that were created by some of the first people on the continent. This tour is uniquely local, with stops at local villages, as well as untouched forests and as far across to the Pacific coastline trails in the Region de los Rios.

BikeTours

Chile’s wine country

Take this cycling wine tour from Santiago to the beautiful village of Zuniga and enjoy cycling through the vineyards of this quaint little town. The cycle takes you through many other beautiful Chilean towns along this wine celebration, with traditional windmills and the most famous wine region in Chile, the Colchagua Valley. The tour also stops in the wine capital of Chile, Santa Cruz, which is located in the Valle de Apalta. Try some of the most historic wines of Chile here, as well as some of the newest selections of eco wines. The tour travels as far as the stunning shores of the Pacific Coast, where the rugged, beautiful and isolated beaches provide some much-need respite from cycling, before returning via shuttle back to Santiago.

Bicycle tours patagonia ecochile

Patagonia bike tour

Start your tour in the stunning lake lands of Bariloche with stunning views of the Andes and the lake. Enjoy a magical boat ride and journey through the Arrayanes National Park, home to South America’s unique myrtle sand, before cycling from Lake Espejo to Cardenal Samore Pass. When you finish the ride there will be a divine thermal baths waiting for you to unwind and rest your aching muscles. Take in Lake Llanquihue by bike, with views of the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes. The tour will also head through stunning farmlands, including spectacular waterfalls, such as Saltos de Petrohue, and Puertos Varas – a small lake town where you will complete your cycling journey.

santiago bike tour

Santiago and beyond

Leaving from Santiago head into Casablanca Valley, known for its delicious wines and untouched eucalyptus groves. Cycle next through the Andes-lined trails of San Antonio Valley, where wine tasting and horse riding are popular pursuits. A stop at the colourful city of Valpariso is also part of this itinerary, before heading over to the coastline at the beach town of Matanzas. Head back into another beautiful wine region, this time the Apalta Valley, where you finish the tour at the premium winemaking destination of Chile before heading back to Santiago.

Take a 20-mile uphill warm-up ride through forests of ancient araucaria trees, with Lonquimay volcano in your sights. Eat lunch in Malalcahuello village and then arrive at Malalcahuello Hotel and Spa , a beautiful thermal resort. Tonight, enjoy an orientation and briefing session before the official welcome dinner.

This section features Chile’s first UNESCO Geopark, Kütralkura. Bike through the lands of different Pewenche communities as you begin to climb, ascending the international Pino Hachado Pass connecting Chile with Argentina. The second half of the climb offers some serious grades, finishing with a 14-mile climb to the peak altitude of 6,181 feet above sea level. At the summit – the border with Argentina – enjoy the truly breathtaking scenery of the Andes. Rest and refuel a bit, then hop back into the van to return to our hotel. Tonight’s dinner will be at a local restaurant in Malalcahuello.

Hotel Antumalal or Casa Solaria

This morning, go hiking in the National Reserve of Malalcahuello to Cerro Coloradito, a small reddish hill that boasts amazing views of 4 volcanoes: Lonquimay, Llaima, Sierra Nevada and Villarrica. Besides the fantastic views, the hike offers very sparsely-traveled trails and a stroll through an ancient forest of araucaria trees – some more than 2,000 years old! Check out from the hotel to begin the 3-hour shuttle to Pucón , the Lake & Volcano District’s major adventure tourism destination. Stay tonight and tomorrow night at Casa Solaria or Hotel Antumalal . Explore Pucon this evening: your guides will be happy to provide some local knowledge about great dining and shopping.

The route rolls beside the river Trancura with views of three volcanoes: Villarrica, Quetrupillan and  Lanin . The first 45 km (30mi) of today’s ride is flat-to-rolling – just enough to get your legs going. Once you’re warmed up, climb a 30 km (20mi) section on brand-new asphalt on the international road that leads into Argentina. Stay on this route all the way through Villarrica National Park  until you arrive at the Customs station next to the mighty  Lanin volcano , the tallest mountain in the Lake & Volcano District. Cruise a fun downhill all the way back to  Currarehue . Enjoy tonight’s dinner hosted by a local Mapuche family.

Head into the heart of the Chilean Patagonia Rainforest on the Seven Lake Route.

Chile’s Seven Lake Route: Villarrica Volcano and Lake Panguipulli.

Each day brings new beauty; today is no exception. Ride one of Chile’s most scenic roads, the Seven Lake Route. Pedal beside the shores of two beautiful lakes –  Calafquén  and  Panguipulli – and cover three-quarters of the way around Villarrica, a majestic, snow-capped active volcano. Today’s ride is smooth and quiet; hardly anyone drives this route. Stop along the way to take in a panorama of five volcanoes. Pedal by the beach of Lake Panguipulli – meaning “land of lions. Continue riding beside the lake to the end of the paved road near Choshuenco village. Stop for lunch, then we’ll continue biking the last 11mi to Hotel Reino Fungi , an architectural wonder designed to blend in with the surrounding forest. Stay here for the next two nights.

Explore Huilo-Huilo Biological Reserve today. Hike, birdwatch, zipline - and/or visit the onsite spa.

Choose from a bevy of options today. Within the park, there are four hiking trails: the Magnetic Stones trail (3-hour hike, medium difficulty); the Truful Route (3½-hour hike, medium); the Truful River Route (6-hour hike, difficult); and Quinchamalí Lookout (3-hour hike, easy). Highlights include botanical forest, clear-water lagoons, mighty waterfalls and amazing views of snow-capped volcanoes. Would you like to learn about the reserve’s plants and wildlife? There are multiple nature walks that focus on botany, birdwatching and geology as well as flora & fauna interpretation. Feeling adventurous? Take the canopy zipline tour for an amazing experience of the rainforest (not included, additional payment locally). A group of platforms between 15 and 25 meters high (50 to 80 feet) are linked to each other by hanging bridges and suspended steel wires. Glide across the cables as though you are flying over the rainforest, rivers and canyons. Visit the Huilo-Huilo waterfall and eat lunch at the local microbrewery.

Lake Ranco Route – A gorgeous lakeside ride.

Casa Exploradores Lodge & Spa, or Sonesta Osorno

+2884 ft / -2897 ft

Today begins with a shuttle out of Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve to the lakeside village of Futrono where we start cycling next to Lake Ranco – a gorgeous lake surrounded by mountains and green fields full of grazing cows. After a week in Chile’s Lake & Volcano District, you’ve probably realized that we are following a Scenic Road called “Lake and Volcano.” Bicycle Adventures was the first bike touring company to offer today’s route around this beautiful lake when it was first paved back in 2015. Stay tonight at Casa Exploradores Lodge & Spa in Futangue, or Sonesta Osorno in Osorno.

See the Osorno Volcano as you ride the German Settlers Route.

Hotel Cumbres Puerto Varas

+2577 ft / -2692 ft

Shuttle 70 miles to the city of Osorno. Begin riding through this region known for its German heritage. Quaint villages, rolling hills and flat stretches lead to the beach of Lake Llanquihue. Continue riding to where a unique landscape is waiting: the Osorno Volcano with its perfect cone. Enjoy an incredible buffet lunch in a German family-owned restaurant, then shuttle 20 minutes to the five-star Hotel Cumbres Puerto Varas , where you’ll stay tonight and tomorrow night. Spend the evening exploring this beautiful city if you wish. Dinner is on your own tonight.

Ride to the base of Osorno Volcano and take the chairlift to the top for some terrific hiking.

+4901 ft / -1254 ft

This morning, start bicycling from the hotel beside Lake Llanquihue, into the landscape of the perfect cone Osorno Volcano. The side of the volcano reaches right to the shore of the lake. Pass through the middle of this astounding landscape as you ride to the village of Ensenada. This 29-mile route is one of the most beautiful rides of the tour. In Ensenada, regroup for a quick snack and then start the most challenging climb of the trip: the Osorno Volcano. This 7-mile challenge is one of the steepest climbs in South America, if not all of Europe. If you’re not up for the climb, we have another beautiful ride for you. After a glorious day, shuttle back to the charming German-style city of  Puerto Varas  to relax and enjoy a farewell dinner at a local seafood restaurant.

Enjoy a leisurely morning, then it's off to Puerto Montt’s airport.

– Breakfast

It’s time to say goodbye to the beautiful Lake & Volcano District of Chile. There is one complimentary 10:00 a.m. shuttle to El Tepual airport in Puerto Montt. However, since most flights leave Santiago for North America in the late evening, many guests prefer to enjoy this last morning in Puerto Varas and taxi there later. (Taxi fare to the airport is approximately $25 USD).

If you choose to spend the morning in Puerto Varas, you can walk to town to explore the marketplace and shop for souvenirs, handcrafts and the woolen clothing for which the area is known. Go paddleboarding (not included) or just take it easy. Then it’s off to catch your flight back to Santiago and onward to wherever your travels take you next. It’s been a trip you’ll always remember!

Itinerary Modifications

Slight itinerary modifications might occur due to weather and or road conditions, or force majeure .

Helmets & Pedals

Most riders choose to bring their own helmets, but if you prefer, we have a small number of helmets available on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.  Please let us know in advance if you’d like to use one.

All our bikes are equipped with Wellgo pedals and toeclips.  We will be happy to substitute any pedals you choose to bring. Amity Tours also has a small number of Shimano SPD and SPD-SL pedals, available on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.  Please let us know in advance if you prefer to use them.

Road Safety

Besides your own on-road safety gear (helmet, rearview mirrors, bright colored jerseys and gloves) we provide a support vehicle that drives at the rear of the group with a road-sign that alert other drivers the presence of bike riders on the road. Drivers in Chile are used to bicycles on the road, so they shouldn’t bother you while riding. All our staff communicates by radio at all times.

Bike Rental – Specialized Diverge Elite E5 (2021)

E-bike rental – specialized turbo creo sl comp carbon evo (2023), bicycle choice.

If you bring your own bike, make sure they have tires of at least 28 cm size. Although the road surfaces are normally in fine shape, one never knows what condition they will be in after the winter. Pack your bike well in a cardboard box that we can easily dismantle for its transportation during the tour.

Non Standard Wheels

If your wheel size is different than 700c, you MUST bring your own parts (tires, tubes and spokes). Likewise, if your wheels have any special features make sure you bring your own special spokes.

Weather notes

We suggest visiting the web for current conditions in Chile and doing your own research on this topic. www.meteochile.cl/ or www.accuweather.com

Generally the weather in this area is very similar to Northern California, specially the coast side.

Late October and November (spring time in the southern hemisphere) present milder temperatures (50°F / 77°F) with some scattered rain.

During December you can start feeling the beginning of the summer with temperatures around 50°F / 81°F.

In January and February temperatures range between 60°F / 95°F.

Remember that you are visiting the Lake & Volcano district, so always expect some rain!

Bicyclists on road to Torres De Paine National Park

Cycling Chile Torres Del Paine

Pedaling dramatic landscapes in patagonia.

The name Patagonia brings out visions of vast wild, untamed lands, guanaco grazing on the grass, towering peaks rising in the distance. It is also a land of 100 year estancia (ranches) and a region with uncrowded roads. Pedalers offers you the chance to cycle through these landscapes, while enjoying luxurious lodging each evening.

Your journey begins in Puerto Natales, as we cycle across the vast grasslands surrounding the national parklands. Here ranchers raise horse and sheep, giant Chilean condors soar overhead and quiet historic haciendas await us each night. The jagged peaks of Torres del Paine, which have popped into view from time to time, now become our focus and we work our way by bike, vehicle and foot through the unbelievable landscapes of this region. Check out Grey Glacier, grab outstanding photos from the scenic overlooks we pass, enjoy the hearty Patagonia cuisine each night, washed down by Chilean wines. It is a ride without compare.

We had a great time. All arrangements were  smooth and the guides all great - Jorge in Quito, Gabriel in Mindo and Sebastian for our hiking week. We had walks on the Cotopaxi paramo, and great lunches! And we had another great walk around Quilotoa crater. Our week cruising on Tip Top II in the Galapagos was everything we could have asked for, a fantastic time. Thanks again for organising this trip.

We had a fabulous time in Peru, we really loved the hotel in Cusco and Cusco itself, plus of course Machu Picchu. The guides and hotel staff were great too!   We also had a lovely time in Ecuador! We enjoyed Quito more than we thought we would, thanks to our guide and we have absolutely loved the Cloud Forest - not least of all because we saw three bears. All the staff here at Maquipucuna have been amazing!    We had an amazing time in the Galápagos. We were so lucky to see so much wildlife all roaming freely. It’s such a special place & not one we will forget. Thank you so much for all the planning you did for us to ensure that all our time away has gone smoothly.

Chile Bike Tours

The long, narrow strip of land on the western coast of South America, Chile is sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes, making it one of nature’s finest playgrounds for lovers of mountains and sea.

Among its wonders is the Lakes and Volcanoes district, a southern region of spectacular beauty between the cities of Temuco and Puerto Montt. Deep freshwater lakes dot the landscape, and snow-capped volcanoes may as well be mile markers—Villarrica, Choshuenco, and Osorno among them. There’s no better place to come face-to-face with waterfalls, hot springs, rivers, and rainforests than this pretty part of Patagonia.

Cuisine that reflects that country’s geographic diversity: seafood like lake trout, oyster soup, prawns, and ceviche; heirloom ingredients like quinoa and merkén (a smoked-chili spice); empanadas, asado (grilled meat), and sweetcorn pastel de choclo

Red and white wines from the Central Valley and northern regions: Carménère, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, plus a favorite local cocktail: the Pisco sour

You'll find cycle day trips in most of the major cities, but for longer-distance and multi-day biking trips, h ere's our essential guide to biking in Chile.

Bike & Hike The Atacama Desert

Cycling the carretera austral, biking through wild patagonia.

The Carretera Austral is one of the world’s most challenging bike routes. This scenic highway, also known as “Ruta 7”, is 1,240km of paved and gravel roads that explore wild and unpredictable Patagonia.

The time it takes the complete the Carretera Austral is completely up to you. There is a famous saying in Patagonia that goes: "Quien se apura en la Patagonia, pierde su tiempo" , which translates as “Whoever goes too fast in Patagonia, wastes their time”. However many days that you decide to cycle for, the best time of year to tackle the Carretera Austral is between November and March.

Most people cycle between 50-60km a day and take additional days to explore the area or just rest. Riding the entire route from Puerto Montt to Villa O’Higgins takes a minimum of 20 days, but that’s without enjoying the stunning scenery and taking rest days.

Carretera Austral cycling routes

Most cyclists travel from north to south, as the prevailing winds will be in your favour. There is no right way to ride along the Carretera Austral but here are some routes that cyclists follow:

  • Puerto Montt to Villa O’Higgins: The full route involves several ferry crossings and a gradually worsening track as you head south. Lodges and camping are the best places to stay. Try rafting in Futaleufú or visit the hot springs at Termas de Amarillo along the way.
  • Go through Chiloe: This route starts from Puerto Montt but follows Ruta 5 to the island of Chiloe, a UNESCO World Heritage site best known for its beautiful wooden churches and birdwatching. Cycle Ruta 5 until you reach Castro or Quellon, from where you can sail to the of ports Puerto Aysen, Puerto Chacabuco, Raul Marin Balmaceda, Puerto Cisnes or Chaiten.
  • Continue through Argentina : Many cyclists will fly into Balmaceda and travel down to Villa O’Higgins and then cross over to Argentina until they reach El Chalten. The majority of this route is on gravel and is closer to off-roading. Make sure you make a detour to explore Tortel, a beautiful little town that can only be explored on foot.

Be aware that the path winds through some of Chile’s most beautiful — but isolated — spots. Take cash, repair kits and emergency supplies.

Colchagua-Wine-Route_lowres

The Colchagua Valley in the heart of Chile's wine country

Biking in Colchagua Valley

Explore chile's wine country.

The perfect match for cycling fans and oenophiles — or just those that want to work off the wine. Most Chilean vineyards require reservations in order to visit so the majority of cycling trips are done through organised tours. Tours can range from a day trip from Santiago to the nearby vineyards of the Ruta Maipo Alto to week-long rides through the famous Colchagua Valley, 100 miles (160km) south of the capital

The big vineyards are open year-round. You’ll find a number of harvest festivals during the late summer and early autumn months which are worth visiting. Most cycling routes are easy, with a mixture of paved and dirt roads between the vineyards. If you’re looking for more than a day’s bike ride, then Colchagua Valley is your best bet.

Colchagua Valley is one of Chile’s most famous wine regions, offering many different vineyards and a large variety of grapes. The quiet roads into its small villages allow you to savour the dramatic landscapes overlooking the Andes mountains. Colchagua Valley is perfect for growing excellent Sauvignon Blanc and strong red wine grapes such as Carmenère, which was thought to be extinct for more than a century before being rediscovered.

The valley’s biggest city, Santa Cruz, is the best option for renting bicycles. Many wineries will include bike rental if you book directly with them, but booking independently gives you the freedom to travel around and explore smaller vineyards too. The Colchagua Valley is a small and compact area which can easily be explored over a couple of days. If you start and end in Santa Cruz, you should be able to visit 4-5 high-quality vineyards within 10km. Bike rentals are around 10,000CLP per person for 48 hours.

Chile Lake District Osorno Volcano and Lake L Lanquihue

Lake Llanquihue in Chile's Lake District is great for easy-going biking trips

Biking Lake Llanquihue

Lakes and volcanoes.

Llanquihue is Chile’s second largest lake in the Lake District region and is home to the largest paved bike path in the country. With the freedom to ride on the self-guided trip around the lake, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the water (which changes colour from turquoise to dark blue/grey) and explore some of the region’s historic towns

Most cyclists complete the route in 3-4 days, starting and finishing in Puerto Varas. Visitors can either travel as part of a tour, which will include accommodation and meals, or you can travel independently, staying in campsites and cabins around the lake.

The best time to complete this trail is between November and April, with January and February being the busiest months as holidaying Chileans head into Puerto Varas. This is easy cycling, with a large part of the route having its own paved bike path.

Look for hostels and information centres along the route that are ‘bike friendly’. These spaces welcome cyclists and allow you to repair your bikes or store them safely.

Chile_Cycling_Atacamadesert

Chile's Atacama Desert is a popular spot for mountain bikers

Cycling in the Atacama Desert

Mountain bike paradise.

Cyclists — or more specifically mountain bikers — come to the Atacama Desert to challenge themselves. This parched inner-desert region spans roughly 130,000sq/km of dry and dusty conditions with beautiful orange-rust coloured mountains, caves and valleys. Most travel to San Pedro de Atacama, but the desert extends all the way towards the Pacific coast and as far south as the Salado-Copiapó drainage basins.

Valle de la Luna

Just 17km outside of San Pedro de Atacama in the Salt Mountains range lies Valle de la Luna, also known as the Moon Valley. The valley is filled with lunar landscapes, sand dunes, and salt caves that are worth exploring.

The path to the valley is well sign-posted, flat and on paved roads, so it is easy to find your way from San Pedro. Make sure you enter the park’s main entrance before 4pm, as they won't let riders in after that time.

Once inside the park, just follow the signs. The bike ride from the Great Sand Dunes to Las Tres Marias is the most fun and if you're looking for something more challenging, try riding up to the Quedabra del Diablo. This three-hour journey from a dried-up riverbed through red clay mountains leads to spectacular views over surreal landscapes.

Garganta del Diablo

Another great bike path near San Pedro de Atacama is Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat). Just 18km from San Pedro, you’ll find the entrance a little bit further on from the ancient fortress of Pukara del Quitor. This ride is considered easy to intermediate, but does involve some ascents and rocky sections. Mostly, you’ll cruise along the river, passing through an area known as Catarpe, which has a small church and then finish the route at La Garganta del Diablo. You’ll go through strange caves and curious rock formations until you reach a narrow passage surrounded by hills, known as El Tunel , before returning to San Pedro

Chile's Elqui Valley is ideal for peaceful and family-friendly biking trips

Biking Elqui Valley

Easy going & family-friendly.

The Elqui Valley might just be one of the most peaceful places to ride your bike in Chile. Known worldwide for its clear skies and being the centre of pisco production, Valle del Elqui (Elqui Valley) is the ideal place to escape the city. This is a good destination for families who want to ride bikes with kids

The Elqui River runs along the valley for 140km, cooling the air and offering plenty of places to stop and admire the view. The easiest places to hire bikes are the towns of La Serena and Vicuña. Paths in the valley are well-marked, but if you don't want to go on your own, there are plenty of guided tours offering single or multiple day bike trips.

This sleepy town is a great stop along the Elqui Valley. It’s home to the Gabriela Mistral museum, one of only two Nobel Prize for Literature winners in Chile. There are also several pisco distilleries that offer free pisco tours and tastings. Make sure that you ride through San Isidro and Diagutas — these small towns are colourful and make a great place to stop for lunch.

Guayacan Brewery

If beer is more to your liking then the Guayacan Brewery might exceed your expectations. This local craft beer is sold nationwide and is well worth trying. Park your bike outside and head into their open-air beer garden.

Pisco Elqui

Pisco Elqui sits at an altitude of 1,250m above sea level. Located in the heart of the valley, this charming village offers the best tourist infrastructure in the region. Make sure that you ride down to Montegrande, the hometown of Gabriela Mistral, then ride uphill for a gruelling 20km to an amazing lookout over the Cochiguaz River.

Matt has been based in Chile since he began a bicycle adventure from Patagonia in 2011. Since then, he has run ultramarathons across steaming volcanoes, hiked solo on the remotest stretches of the Greater Patagonian Trail and ridden his tandem with his Chilean wife across the breathless expanses of the Atacama desert.

We also recommend a minimum of three hours for connecting flights within Chile. Please book your flights into Temuco Airport/La Araucanía International Airport (ZCO). The official shuttle company at Temuco’s Airport is called TransAraucania . They are the only authorized shuttle company at the airport, and their staff wears a blue and green uniform. TransAraucania has transportation available every day and are ready to meet all domestic flights. They are located in the airport, next to the automatic doors at baggage claim. TransAraucania offers regular shuttles to Pucón at 15.000 CLP (USD $15 per person), with a minimum of four people. You will receive a personal bike fit to ensure a smooth and comfortable ride, then your guides will present information on safety and equipment usage along with an overview of the day’s ride. Next, you will set out for a ride to Caburgua Lake and Huife Hot Springs.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Hotel Antumalal (+56 45 244 1011), and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details.
