Day in champagne region

This day trip was fantastic- because our driver David was fabulous, as was the tour itself. We really loved the first house we visited, as it was informative and the champagne was excellent. Our lunch was excellent at the Continental, which is extra special because we are gluten free and usually we experience difficulty in this regard. The second champagne house was not as great as the first, but it was good. The tour guide at the second house showed us how to sabre open a bottle,which was cool. Personally, I didn’t care for it as much. It was a great day in the countryside of France, to see its beauty and colour. Rheims cathedral was beautiful! The van was clean and comfortable for the drive. David our driver was FABULOUS! You couldn’t ask for a better driver, polite, friendly, informative, welcoming….he made our experience that much better. He definitely was attentive to us, and providing extra help to another client with special needs. You are fortunate to have an employee such as him.

We did our tour on Sep 9 and visited two champagne houses. Thomas, our driver, was patient, kind and helpful. Virginie, our guide, was fantastic! She made sure we had a great time, and worked patiently around a bubbly group of enthusiastic friends. She kept us on schedule without pushing, making sure we experienced and learned what the beautiful region had to offer. Departure from Paris

As you make your way out of the city, you will pass through picturesque French countryside and villages, providing you with a glimpse into rural life in France. About The Gare de l’Est Train Station

Gare de l’Est has 30 platforms. Platform 2-12 and 23 -30 are used by main train lines, for example, the high-speed train TGV

Aim to arrive 30 minutes before departure at the train station to be on the safe side. Around 15 minutes before departure, the platform number will be indicated on screens. High-speed trains and trains to Reims are shown on the screen labeled “ Départs Grandes Lignes “. 

To be on the safe side, aim to arrive 30 minutes before your train is scheduled.

You can purchase your train tickets at the SNCF ticket office in Hall Alsace on the ground floor, or at the ticket vending machines that you find all over the station.

However, buying your ticket on the day might be very expensive and you risk that the train you plan to board is sold out.

Plan Your Day Trip from Paris to Champagne

If you organize your day trip from Paris to Champagne on your own, you should put a few things on your agenda. Apart from the Cathedral of Reims (beautiful!), your agenda should be filled with a couple of Champagne Houses.

If you are traveling by train, and are keen to visit both, Reims and Épernay , I advise booking a tour that starts from Reims.

Even though the train from Reims to Épernay only takes around 40 minutes, and it’s theoretically doable to visit both locations, independently. However, You will find yourself rushing.

There are simply too many schedules to respect to make it an enjoyable day trip: Train departure times, Champagne House reservations, connecting train schedules to head back etc.

You’ll be very much running from A to B.

Find the Best Itinerary For Your Champagne Trip

There are quite a few options on how to travel to Reims and how to fill your day. It can be quite confusing but I summed up 3 options that are the most efficient.

What you pick depends on your travel style – do you appreciate traveling with a group or are you more of an independent traveler? and of course: your budget. 

If you plan to visit the Champagne on a budget , book your train tickets early to get some low-fare tickets. If you reserve only one Champagne tasting and have a budget lunch, your Champagne day trip will be probably around 80€ per person. But that’s really the bare minimum.

Option #1: Reims Tour, self-organized

Hop on a train (don’t forget to  book your train ticket in advance, especially since the morning trains are often sold out) and try to be in Reims early. I like to book tickets with omio.com , their page is straightforward to navigate, and you get the tickets conveniently sent to your mobile phone.

After some sightseeing , visiting the Cathedral is a must (!!)  head to the first Champagne house of your choice and enjoy a guided visit and a Champagne tasting .

Depending on where your first Champagne experience took place, you can either have lunch around the Domaine (might be a bit pricey though) or head to the Place Drouet d’Erlon in the center.

It’s a pedestrian street with plenty of restaurants. Best to check TripAdvisor to know what eateries are close to your morning Champagne tasting.

Visit a second Champagne House in the afternoon before heading back to Paris. If you can’t decide which are the best Champagne houses to visit, Taittinger and Pommery are very popular ones.

Option #2 – Visit the Champagne Region from Reims

Catch an early train from Gare de l’Est to arrive in Reims before 9.  Start your day off with sightseeing in Reims, visit the Cathedral, have a morning café, and visit a Champagne House of your choice.

I suggest having lunch at Café de Palais . It has excellent reviews and is not far from the tourism office, the meeting point for your next activity.

You will leave Reims in the afternoon and take a trip  through the vineyards of the Champagne region . Visit Hautvillers and a family-run winery. You’ll learn everything about Champagne production and – of course – taste Champagne.

What my Husband and I did: Wedding Anniversary in Reims

For our wedding anniversary, my husband and I chose to spend a day in Reims. It turned out to be a lovely and memorable day.

We started our journey from Paris in the morning via TGV and our first stop was the Cathedral of Reims and a stroll through the city. The city was bigger than I expected, with many Shops, Restaurants, and Cafés.

Since it was a special occasion, we opted for lunch at Racine , a 2-star French-Japanese fusion restaurant. It’s a great choice for anyone looking for an exceptional dining experience, offering delicious food and excellent service. It was a bit on the pricey side, but well worth it.

Our trip also included, of course, a tour of a Champagne House. We picked Veuve Clicquot, which held sentimental value for us as it was the Champagne we served at our wedding. The tour was informative and engaging, particularly learning about the legacy of Veuve Clicquot.

The champagne tasting was a delightful experience, with generous servings that added to our enjoyment and made me buy more Champagne than I intended 😉

One of the things I highly recommend doing before your tour is to read up about the history of champagne . 

Understanding a little about the region and how champagne was invented, adds more to the whole experience.

So, to make things easy, I’m giving you a potted history of my favourite sparkling wine.

The Roman Roots

Before Champagne became the sparkling sensation we know today, the Romans were the first to plant vineyards in this French region. 

However, the wine they produced was still and more of a pale pinkish hue. The Romans laid the groundwork, but the bubbles were yet to come.

The Accidental Fizz

Enter Dom Pérignon, a Benedictine monk who joined the abbey in 1668. Contrary to popular myths, he didn’t invent Champagne. 

In fact, he was trying to eliminate the bubbles, which were considered a defect at the time. 

The bubbles were a result of halted fermentation during the cold winters. When spring arrived, the yeast resumed its activity, leading to the fizz. 

Dom Pérignon worked diligently to improve the quality of the wines, doubling the size of the terroir to 20 hectares and favouring Pinot Noir over other varieties. 

His meticulous methods laid the foundation for the Champagne we enjoy today.

The British Influence

While the French were trying to eliminate the bubbles, the British were embracing them. They even developed stronger glass bottles to withstand the pressure. 

The British market played a significant role in making sparkling Champagne popular.

The Rise of Sparkling Champagne

After the death of Louis XIV, the Duke of Orléans made sparkling Champagne popular among the French nobility. This led to the establishment of renowned Champagne houses like Moët & Chandon and Veuve Clicquot , setting the stage for Champagne’s global acclaim.

The World Wars

The early 20th century was a challenging period for the Champagne region, as it became a battlefield during the World Wars. During the German occupation in World War II, soldiers stole more than 2 million bottles from winemakers in the Champagne region. 

Otto Klaebisch, a Nazi-appointed officer, was put in charge of the region and demanded as many as 400,000 bottles per week for Germany.

But the winemakers got their own back by hiding their best bottles behind secret walls in their cellars or mislabelling them.

François Taittinger of the eponymous house was even jailed for a few days for his insolence when he sent subpar Champagne to the Germans.

Modern Times

Today, Champagne is more than just a drink; it symbolises celebration and luxury.

The region produces over 200 million bottles annually, and its popularity has led to discussions about expanding the production zone to meet the ever-growing demand.

Before you go, I want to share some fun facts about champagne I learned when I visited La Cité du Vin in Bordeaux . If you’ve not been, it’s definitely worth going. Hubby and I spent three hours in there, and I could have spent longer.

It covers wine from around the world and has a fabulous 5 Senses Bar area that was a lot of fun. And that’s where I learned all about how champagne came into being and what makes it my favourite bubbly drink.

Not to mention that Bordeaux is such a great city and less than two hours from Paris.

It’s All About Location: First off, there’s no grape or town named “Champagne.” The name is all about the region in North Eastern France where this bubbly is crafted. So, if it’s not from this specific corner of France, it’s not Champagne. It’s as simple as that!

Exclusive Naming Rights: Speaking of location, only sparkling wine from this particular region can legally be called “Champagne.” Even if a neighbouring French region produces a similar bubbly, they can’t use the prestigious name.

It’s better on the waistline: Good news for the health-conscious! Champagne typically contains fewer calories than red or white wine. A 750ml bottle has around 600 calories. 

Twice as Nice: What sets Champagne apart from other wines is its double fermentation process. The first round gives you a still wine, and the second adds that iconic fizz. 

The Devil’s Wine: In its early days, the pressure inside the champagne bottles was so intense that many would explode. This led to the wine being called ‘ le vin du diable ‘ or ‘ the devil’s wine .’ Modern bottles are designed to withstand this pressure, making them far less devilish!

So now you know the history behind champagne along with some of the fun facts I’ve learned along the way, it’s time for a quick tasting lesson.

Always hold the glass by the stem. This ensures you don’t warm the champagne with your hand, which could alter its taste.

Gently inhale the bouquet of the champagne to take in its complex scent profile. Look for a harmonious blend of fruitiness, nuttiness, and perhaps even a touch of bready richness.

The guide will wait for you by the Reims Tourist Office at the train station. Don’t let this scare you. Taking the train from Paris to Reims is straightforward and you won’t even need to change trains.

You will take a small tour of the historic centre of Reims to start with. Here you can visit the Notre-Dame de Reims and take some pictures of the picturesque streets . Whether you book a Champagne region tour with pickup in Paris or make your own way down by train is up to you. In my experience, getting from Paris to the Champagne region is pretty easy. There is a direct train and a return ticket will set you back about 60 euros if you book in advance. There are a lot of different tours that leave from either Reims or Epernay station. It means that you will overall have a lot more choice when it comes to the price range and the kind of tours you can book. What should I wear to a Champagne tasting tour? 

When booking a Champagne tasting tour from Paris to Champagne you probably will want to know what to wear. I would personally advise you to wear something casual chique. Women can wear long trousers, a nice top and some flats while men are good with a pair of Chinos and a (polo)shirt. As for shoes I would recommend wearing flat shoes – preferably something that is comfortable but not too sporty. You can visit this varied region all year round, but the best time to visit is from May-September. This is when the vines are still full of grapes, and the smaller wineries are still offering tours and tastings.

How to Get from Paris to Champagne

Taking a self-guided Champagne tour from Paris is made simple by the efficient and affordable trains available throughout the day.

Direct, high-speed trains run from Paris Gare de l’Est train station to the gateway of the Champagne region, Gare de Reims station in Reims. Around 10 trains travel this route on the average weekday, and the journey itself takes 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the train service.

You can buy your tickets at the station on the day, but during the high season or national holidays, booking in advance is advisable to ensure you get your preferred train. You can view schedules and book here .

We end this day in Epernay, connected to Paris by another high-speed TGV train. This journey takes 1.5 hours, so try to grab a window seat to enjoy watching the golden sunset over the sprawling vineyards fly past as you return to Paris.

If you have decided to hire a car during your stay, you can reach Reims from Paris in just 1.5 hours. There are several route options available, so make sure you have a GPS divide or a trustworthy map-reading passenger along for the ride.

The traffic in Paris can get very heavy, so try to avoid rush hour. Leave early for your trip to Champagne from Paris before the rush, around 7 am or treat yourself to a lie-in and leave a little later at 10 am. 

France’s motorways tend to have tolls, so bear this in mind if you want to take the fast road. Of course, you can opt to avoid the tolls completely and follow the minor roads through the charming French villages, but this will add another hour to your journey. 

There are several car parks dotted around Reims and Epernay. The central locations cost around €1.50 per hour, but if you park further out of the city centre and walk in, you can often find free street parking. 

The downside to driving into the Champagne region is that the driver will not be able to participate in the Champagne tastings – similar to if you’re driving during our Loire Valley itinerary . There is plenty to see and do in the Champagne region, from tasting houses to historical cathedrals.

We start in Reims, the capital of the region, and end in the charming town of Epernay, home to one of the most famous streets in the world, the Avenue de Champagne. You can easily explore the best of the region in just one day, making it the perfect day out from Paris. 

Notre Dame de Reims

Whether you are arriving by train or by car, Reims is the perfect place to start your day. With a rich history dating back to Roman times, this charming town is known for its cultural heritage, gothic architecture and, of course, its famous Champagne houses. 

The first stop on our Champagne region day trip is the Notre Dame de Reims cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once the coronation site of the Kings of France.

This Gothic masterpiece is truly breathtaking, with stunning stained glass windows and intricate carvings. Built in the 13th century, this cathedral is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the whole of France. You can organise a guided tour here .

Musée de la Reddition

If you are a history enthusiast, this one is for you. Reims is home to the Musée de la Reddition (Museum of Surrender). It is by no means a spectacular building but the historical significance placed on this one room makes it a must-visit destination in Reims.

Here, in the early hours of Monday, May 7, 1945, three senior officers from the German armed forces signed an unconditional surrender agreement, effectively ending World War II in Europe. The museum is home to documents, artefacts, press releases and the original war maps placed on the walls.

Although you may not find this museum in every guide to visiting Reims, it is a pivotal location for our world history and is well worth visiting.

Reims is the capital of the Champagne wine region, home to 155 miles of cellars under the city streets. Our next stop is, of course, a Champagne tasting.

There are several world-renowned Champagne houses offering cellar tours and tastings across the town. You may have a personal favourite you would like to visit, but here are our top 3. 

Tattinger – Taittinger is a family-owned Champagne house with over 280 hectares of vineyards in the region. You can tour the cellars and learn about the Champagne-making process, as well as taste some of their world-famous wines.

Veuve Clicquot – Veuve Clicquot is one of the most iconic Champagne houses in the world, known for its distinctive yellow label. You can take a tour of the cellars with a knowledgeable guide and learn about the history of the house, as well as sample some of their delicious Champagne.

Pommery – Pommery is another family-owned Champagne house with a rich history and a reputation for producing high-quality Champagne. The cellars at Pommery are particularly impressive, with a maze of underground tunnels that you can explore. The house also hosts art exhibitions throughout the year, making it a unique and exciting place to visit.

Lunch in Reims

After sampling some of the region’s finest Champagne, you’re bound to have worked up an appetite. Reims is home to some excellent cafes and restaurants offering classic French cuisine. 

If you are hoping to match the luxurious Champagne with top-end cuisine, Le Jardin Les Crayères is the restaurant for you. This Michelin-starred restaurant is located in a beautiful 19th-century mansion and offers an elegant and refined dining experience. The menu features classic French dishes with a modern twist, using local and seasonal ingredients.

For a more budget-friendly option, visit Brasserie du Boulingrin. This traditional brasserie is located in the heart of Reims and serves up classic French dishes in a lively and bustling atmosphere. The menu includes favourites like steak frites, escargot, and onion soup.

The smaller town of the two, Epernay has a higher concentration of Champagne houses and a certain small-town charm.  

Getting from Reims to Epernay is quick and easy, thanks to the efficient local trains that run between the two towns. The trains run every hour or so from the Gare de Reims and take just 35 minutes.

Our first stop in Epernay is the Avenue de Champagne. A grand and elegant street located in the heart of Epernay, known for its beautiful mansions and prestigious Champagne houses.

Take a stroll down the tree-lined avenue to soak in the atmosphere. During the summer months, the trees blossom with beautiful white flowers, which add to the grandeur. 

Before heading into one of the Champagne houses to enjoy the rest of the afternoon, take a tour around the Musée du vin de Champagne et d’Archéologie régionale.

Housed in the breathtaking 19th century Château Perrier, once home to Champagne merchants, it makes the perfect location to learn more about the region’s wines and architecture.

The museum offers a fully immersive discovery of the ingredients that go into Champagne alongside the historical heritage. The gardens towards the rear are beautifully kept and provide a relaxing break.

Entry includes an audio tour and access to the gardens. You can also enter the gardens for free without entry to the museum if you want to just take a quick stroll away from the hustle and bustle.

Champagne Tasting in Epernay

As the afternoon sun beats down on the Champagne houses, it’s time to enjoy another round of sampling. Discover some of the 68 miles of cellars located below the streets of Epernay. 

Epernay is home to some of the world’s most famous Champagne houses. Each one offers cellar tours and tastings year-round. There are many incredible varieties of Champagne on offer, from the large, iconic houses to the smaller boutique family-run establishments. Whatever your taste, you may already have a favourite in mind, but here are our top 3.

Moët & Chandon – Moët & Chandon is perhaps one of the most famous Champagne houses in the world. They offer a fantastic cellar tour that takes you through their vast network of underground cellars. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the historic cellars where Napoleon Bonaparte stored his personal collection of Champagne.

Mercier – Mercier, one of the largest Champagne houses in the region, offers a truly unique and immersive cellar tour experience. You can even ride a small train through the vast network of underground cellars.

Perrier-Jouët – Perrier-Jouët is known for its elegant and delicate Champagnes. The tour includes a visit to the famous “Crayères” cellars, which are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Are Champagne Tours From Paris Worth It? (Ultimate Guide)

Some of the most popular things to do in Paris are Champagne tours and day trips. But are they really worth it?

Typically, you pay a lot of money for the excursion. So naturally you’ll want to make sure that you are getting your money’s worth.

Luckily for you, I have done such trips and know all about it. In short: Yes, Champagne day trips are worth it! But surely not all of them.

One day is not a lot of time to see the Champagne region, so you’ll need to pick a really great tour to make the most of it. And I am here to help you pick!

I have done Champagne day trips and also visited the region by myself. And I can definitely recommend booking a day trip to Champagne from Paris if you have the time.

The Champagne is definitely worth seeing, and tasting some of the bubbly should be on your Paris bucket list for sure.

The region is just more than an hour outside of Paris, so if you have a couple of days you should reserve a day for this. I am not a fan of self-organizing a one-day trip (read below why) so I would definitely book with a provider.

But keep in mind that some of these tours offered online only visit one or two wineries that are usually not family-owned.

So it can be a bit hard to find good tours, that will provide you a good inside into the region, and not just a superficial touristic program.

Find below two tours that I think are definitely worth it when thinking about going to Champagne.

If I had to choose between visiting Champagne on a day trip from Paris or going on a designated holiday to Champagne I would pick the latter.

I think one day is barely enough to get a good glimpse of the region, so I would definitely opt for a full-blown holiday instead of a day trip.

If you have the time, combine your Paris vacation with a multi-day trip to Champagne. You’ll want to soak up the charm of the region without being rushed from A to B.

However, going for one day is better than not going at all, so I would definitely say that Champagne is worth visiting, even for a day.

Overall, this Champagne Day Trip from Paris is my first choice when looking for a great guided excursion.

There are two different wineries included in this trip, one of them the famous Nicolas Feuillatte. The second visit will be to a local family-owned winery.

I totally appreciate that you will get to see a bigger estate and a smaller one, to get a true feeling of the region.

Also included in this trip is a visit to the beautiful Reims Cathedral, which is another added bonus.

Lastly, you will stop by the gravestone of Dom Perignon, an important cultural site for Champagne lovers.

The group size is limited to 8 people, which is perfect in my opinion.

As far as private excursions to Champagne go, this Champagne VIP Day Trip from Paris is my favorite. This Champagne Tour is definitely worth it.

This tour has everything included that you could possibly need: a private guide who is also a vineyard owner, visits to the most esteemed wineries, and a traditional French lunch.

The best thing about it is you can enjoy it without having to be part of a bigger group!

Obviously, private tours come with a price tag. Since you can bring a couple of people on this trip, I feel the price is quite right.

Overall, you can’t go wrong with this day trip – especially since you can always amend the itinerary to your preferences.

There are both pros and cons to booking a guided tour to the Champagne area from Paris versus organizing a day trip there yourself.

While organized tours are generally a little bit more expensive, they have a lot of perks.

The fact that you won’t need to worry about transportation is the biggest one.

Going from Paris to Epernay or Reims by train is easy. Getting around there not so much. Especially between the little villages of the Champagne Region, there is no proper public transport.

Another big perk is availability. Bigger Champagne houses are usually booked up way in advance. Going on a guided tour can help you there for sure since they always have slots on reserve.

The same goes for lunch restaurants. We had such a hard time finding available spots – you won’t have to look around on a guided tour.

Lastly, you’ll want to have a drink or two on this tour. It helps to have a reliable driver or tour guide to take care of the organization and the driving . There is no fun in tipsily trying to navigate back to Paris by yourself.

Of course, there are pros and cons to going with a smaller group or booking a private tour. There are a lot of private tours from Paris to Champagne, and you are probably wondering by now if they are worth it.

Generally, I think it is always worth splurging for a private trip if you are more than two people. This way, you barely pay more than in a group tour.

One thing to be cautious of when booking private luxury tours from Paris to Champagne is these tours that only include the driver. You’ll want a local guide to show you around, and not just a chauffeur that drops you off.

The private tour I suggested above definitely includes a great wine expert who can teach you a lot on your tour. I would say it is worth the money.

Every season in the Champagne region has a different charm.

Especially summer and autumn are considered the peak season in Champagne. Autumn is harvest season, with many festivities and attractions. Both summer and autumn are the most crowded.

I prefer visiting the Champagne region in spring . The weather is usually lovely and the area is a lot more quiet.

France of course is also always a great destination for a Christmas weekend getaway.

Yes, Champagne is definitely worth visiting. The region offers beautiful landscapes, fantastic sparkling wine, and delicious cuisine. It is one of the most interesting regions in France, for wine lovers and other travelers alike.

Yes, you can do a day trip to Champagne from Paris. The Champagne region is about two hours outside of Paris, so you can conveniently go there for just a day with an organized group tour or by train or car.

Epernay is for many people better than Reims. The city of Epernay is where many of the most famous Champagne houses are located. It has a certain charm and uniqueness to it, that Reims does not have. While Reims has some beautiful landmarks, the city itself is not as beautiful.

The Champagne region is about 145 km (90 m) outside of Paris. It will take you around 2 hours to drive to Champagne with a car. The train takes about two hours and is a convenient way to get there.

7 Tips for a Day Trip to Champagne from Paris

Champagne is synonymous with France. After all, the bubbly glasses of goodness originated in northern France and only sparkling wine from that region can bear the prestigious title of “Champagne.” Visiting the home of one of the most famous drinks in the world was at the top of my life long list of dreams, so on our last day in Paris—and the final day of our trip to Spain and France — we took a day trip to Champagne from Paris.

I had visions of sipping fizzy Champagne all day and wandering around the historical region without a care in the world, but the reality was much different. We didn’t realize the region was divided into two cities (and arrived in one when we had a tour scheduled in another), among other bumps in the road. So learn from our mistakes!

1. The Champagne region is about an hour’s train ride from Paris.

The easiest way to Champagne from Paris is to take the high speed TGV train. The region’s two major centers are Reims and Épernay (more on that below) and the train stops in Reims (45 minutes away, about 15€) or Épernay (75 minutes, about 22€). Trains run back and forth all day and tickets can be purchased at the station before boarding or in advance online.

2. Champagne is made up of 5 small areas, but stick to Reims and/or Épernay.

All five regions of Champagne produce sparkling wine, but the towns of Reims and Épernay are the centers of the area. A note of caution: Reims and Épernay are not that close together! We made the mistake of taking a cab from Reims to Epernay and it cost us around 100€!

If you want to see both regions, jump back on the train. It’s an inexpensive 9€ and is much quicker (about a half hour on the TGV high speed train) than taking a cab or the bus.

3. Épernay is like Sonoma while Reims is like Napa.

After our 100€ cab ride to Épernay to tour the Moët & Chandon caves, we made the best of being in the other city and visited a smaller Champagne House (what the wineries are called), called Georges Cartier . Georges Cartier is a smaller winery that doesn’t export to the United States so we’d never get to taste it stateside. We got one-on-one attention and a private tasting of their entire line of Champagnes.

We wandered around Épernay for the rest of the morning (yes, our Moët & Chandon tour was at 9:45 a.m.) and enjoyed the peaceful, small town. It felt a lot like Sonoma. When we finally explored the much larger, more touristy Reims (where we toured Veuve Clicquot ), it reminded both of us of the more touristy Napa. That’s not good or bad, just worth mentioning for those who have been to California’s wine region and have a strong preference for one side over the other.  But…

4. Wine tasting in Champagne isn’t like it is in California.

If you’ve been wine tasting in California, you know that wineries welcome visitors to drink, relax and oftentimes eat. In Champagne, most wineries obviously want visitors and they want you to try their wines, but none of the houses we visited offered any food (which can become a problem after drinking Champagne all day!) and often shuffled us to move on after our tours. In Napa and Sonoma, I felt like I could spend all day relaxing at the wineries but in Champagne I felt like they wanted me to buy a bottle and move on.

Another major difference: Champagne is aged in underground caves so most of the tours take visitors underground to natural vaults created by chalk and/or limestone quarries, some dug out during the Roman times. It’s incredibly impressive. But keep that in mind when deciding your attire because the caves can get chilly!

5. Research what Champagne Houses you want to visit beforehand.

There are a ton of Champagne Houses in the region, so have an idea which ones you want to visit before you go.  This will help decide if to go Reims, Épernay or both. Épernay is home to Mercier, Moët & Chandon (open since 1743!) who also owns Dom Pérignon; while Reims hosts Veuve Clicquot (1772), Mumm (1827) and Tattinger (1734). Wikipedia has a helpful list of houses here or Reims Tourism lists houses . Reservations can be made at most Champagne houses online beforehand.

Bonus tip: With good food comes good wine. In the case of Champagne, it’s the opposite: with good wine, comes good food.  Champagne is home to a dozen Michelin-rated restaurants, so make reservations for those before heading there, too.

6. The region has an incredible past so don’t forget to indulge in history, too.

Because of its geographical position between many different countries, the region has seen a lot of history, particularly in the form of war. The Romans defeated the Huns in Champagne in 451 A.D., many battles of the Hundred Years’ War took place there, and it was bombed repeatedly during both World Wars. In fact, the caves of Veuve Clicquot were once used as a hospital during World War I and the remnants of a hospital cross are still visible on the cave walls. And Reims is actually the place where Eisenhower and the Allies received the German surrender on May 7, 1945.

Reims is also home to the Notre Dame de Rems Cathedral, where the coronation of every French king has taken place, and the Abbey of Saint Remi, the largest Romanesque pilgrimage church in northern France.

7.  Consider taking a guided tour.

We managed to visit the Champagne region on our own, doing a lot of research beforehand. We pulled it off, but not without some hiccups (like the 100€ cab ride). At the end of the day when we were exhausted from getting lost, we wished we would have signed up with a guided tour.

There are plenty online and I’m sure they are all much easier and less stressful than doing it on your own! This Champagne tour and this day trip are the closest to what we did, visiting both Reims and Épernay. Or this one is just Reims while this tour is just Épernay (including Moët & Chandon).

Champagne is such a contrast from Paris.  It’s definitely worth dedicating a day to explore the countryside and taste France’s most famous drink.  While parts of our day trip to Champagne was hectic, it was a sparkling end to an amazing trip through Spain and France .

Wear shoes you can walk on cobblestone and stone (possibly damp) stairs, and remember the caves might be a little chilly.

Hi Kelli! My husband and I are planning to take the train from Paris to Reims. We’re planning to take taxis from the train station, to champagne houses. From champagne house to champagne house do you think it will be difficult to hail a taxi? Or are there taxis located at each champagne house?

Hi Jordan – thanks for reading. I can’t say for certain. When I was there, taxis were not readily available. It may be best to reach out to the Champagne houses to ask them if they have taxi stands nearby or can call a taxi for you.

Hi Kelli, thanks for sharing your experience. To get from the Champagne Houses, was it easy to hail a taxi or transportation? I’m concerned about transformation if my family does a DIY day trip from Paris, versus a tour.

I recommend a guided tour. The taxi from Paris was over 100€. The train was much cheaper, but navigating the bus and public transit once you’re in the Champagne region might be tricky.

Very helpful post. I’ll be there end of June and can’t decide if we should take the train and cabs to the Champagne Houses or take a tour. I really want to go to both Moet and Veuve but I’m having trouble finding a tour that goes to both so may have to train it and hope for the best! Did you find the trains easy to navigate? It was extremely touristy and very crowded, so it wasn’t my favorite place but I’m glad I experienced it. Other than that, I didn’t venture too far from Paris, although I wish I had. As for eating, I know there are a lot of great restaurants in the region (including Michelin-rated places) but I didn’t eat anywhere worth noting so I personally can’t recommend any. Sorry!
