REVIEW | Chino XL x Stu Bangas – God’s Carpenter

Two hip hop heavyweights collide on ‘ God’s Carpenter ‘ as the hard and heavy boom bap production of Stu Bangas, meets the intellectual, vivid and intricate lyricism and flow of Chino XL. This project has been on every hip hop heads radar for months now – with Chino fans waiting an excrutiating ELEVEN YEARS for another project from the lyrical assassin, and with the finished product crushing our speakers and headphones for a minute, it’s time to dive a little deeper and unpack the project through a Raw Side Hip Hop review!

Chino XL calls it like it is on the title track ‘ God’s Carpenter ‘ – he’s an incredible writing specimen, and his big, verbose bars need the robust underscore of Stu Bangas. The two work together as brilliantly as the logo on the cover art to deliver some hard and heavy hip hop. ‘ AMBImonsterous ‘ is a menacing track that Stu really crafts to underpin the wacky wordplay Chino spits and then ‘ Who Told You ‘ is a more sinister sounding score, but Chino’s flow is a little more accessible (to those who don’t dig the heavy, lyric-fuelled bar fest) – even if the track itself is dark and nefarious, but XL is at his best creating pictures with his prose.

It gets a little more upbeat with the guitar riff on ‘ Mir8cles Opposite ‘ ripping over the boom bap drums and bassline that is almost hypnotic. Chino spits his bravado on this track with bars like “I be giving death a near-Chino experience”. The cuts are sharp and the hook breaks up the flow, and this track really gets the head nodding uncontrollably and Chino mixes up the flow a lot more on this joint than he does on others. Vinnie Paz joins forces for a grimy, bully-rap anthem on ‘ Murder Rhyme Kill ‘ and the two work off the moody instrumental with their iconic styles – Paz with his purposeful and deliberate delivery and Chino bringing the high energy, non-stop narrative flow. Plus, the cuts and sample on the hook are epic.

‘ Remind You ‘ adds another element to the album, as this track definitely pushes the sonic landscape, entering into more melodic territory and introspective, heart felt and emotion poetry, compared to the complex lyrical wordplay we normally receive from Chino. Next up, ‘ Don’t Care ‘ kicks things off with Ruth (Ozarks) delivering an important warning, as Stu cooks up an almost-metal infused banger which then transitions to a more subtle score for Chino to spit his rapid-fire delivery over, before ‘ D.X.P.S .’ slows it down and hits the headphones with some horror movie inspired production that is melancholic and dour.

Chino spits his twisted thoughts on ‘ Art Apothecary ‘ which sounds like a dark, mystical video game soundtrack with its intricate bells while ‘Sinister’ is a more traditional boom bap track, but don’t let the dusty drums confuse you – this still shales you inner ear and Chino speaks his truth, and takes aim at wack rappers, suggesting God loves them because they are plentiful. ‘ Scribbled Sorcery ‘ is heavy, as Stu Bangas has created this track to really get deep and dark, penetrating your ear canals, while Chino varies his flow but maintains his ferocity of wordplay and lyrical content. Finally, the album concludes with ‘ Night Drive ‘, a dark, key driven track that allows Chino to express his crazed, left of centre, creative narrative with feeling and emphasis.

Bangers: Murder Rhyme Kill, God’s Carpenter, Art Apothecary, Mir8cles Opposite.

Score: 9.5 / 10. Fans of Chino XL know exactly what to expect – this was always going to be a super bar-heavy offering and Chino does what he does, crafting incredibly complex and intricate wordplay, and delivering in his unique and iconic way. He rides the Stu Bangas production as only he can, mixing up the cadence and tempo to ensure the listener pays attention to the lyrical brilliance, while still appreciating the hard-hitting, dark, boom bap production that Stu Bangas has perfected. This is going to stay in rotation for a while as we try to capture everything Chino XL and Stu Bangas have afforded us.

Known for socially-fuelled rhymes and razor sharp mic skills, Peruvian-American rapper Immortal Technique has built up a strong following whilst remaining strictly independent.

Born in Lima, Peru before moving to the cultural melting pot of Harlem at a young age, Felipe Coronel found himself repeatedly getting in trouble with the law for what he now describes as childish behavior. He studied Political Science for two semesters however, due to his patchy history with the law, struggled to find employment.

During his time in prison, Felipe began to develop his rapping and, having been left with little choice, turned to his Mcing talents as a source of income. He sold his music on the streets of New York whilst participating in various freestyle and battle rap events. The money from this went on to fund Immortal Technique’s debut album ‘Revolutionary Vol. 1’ which went on to sell 45000 copies without any label or distribution support.

From there his profile began to grow with an appearance on ‘106 & Park’s’ Freestyle Friday and a feature in The Source magazine’s independent column ‘Unsigned Hype’ (known for helping to break artists like Eminem over the years). He followed this up with the release of albums ‘Revolutionary vol. 2’ and ‘The 3rd World’ both of which were released on ‘Viper Records’, a small independent label which Immortal Tech has now taken control of.

Touring and video game appearances have helped to build up the rapper’s profile outside of New York and he is now an internationally renowned artist with his songs receiving millions of streams of services like Spotify.

Immortal Technique last night was absolutely mind blowing! Hands down the best concert I have ever been to. The DJs were fantastic (DJ Snuff and DJ Static) - great energy and great tunes. The support acts were fantastic - best support acts I have seen. I have to say, I hadn't heard of Constant Flow or Hasan Salaam prior to the show, but I will definitely be looking out for both of them now. I bought CF's CD straight from him at the show, and got a picture with him! And I will be looking for both of their new albums when they're out later this year. They both had incredible energy and were great lyricalists. Technique was AMAZING! He had such a rapport with the crowd and came across as such a genuine, nice guy. It felt like a really intimate concert, much different to paying 5x the price to see Eminem at Wembley, for example. It felt like he really loved being there and he put 110% into the performance (despite sweltering heat - I don't think I'd be going back to the venue (The Garage) anytime soon...) His energy was insane and he had some interesting things to talk about. His performance was great, fantastic selection of songs, with of course a full performance of Dance with the Devil. It felt very "go with the flow" rather than many of the staged, rehearsed performances you usually see these days - many times Technique asked the DJ or the crowd what song he should do next, and he seemed ready and able to perform anything requested. Technique met fans queuing before the concert started and did autographs etc, and then he stayed at the end until every last fan had shook his hand and got his autograph. What a night! Will always remember it! Immortal Technique is a fantastic performer and I will definitely see him again next time he's in London.

Felipe Andres Coronel better known by the stage name Immortal Technique, is an American rapper often described as giving everything to his live show and his devoted fan base. An intelligent artist, his works often hit on topics of socialism, poverty, religion and government so it is pretty hard for his crowds to keep up with his rapping speed and complexity, this does not stop them trying.

Felipe seems to really appreciate this as he cheers them along and tells them to sing as loud as possible during early single 'The Point Of No Return'. His whole setlist is quite controversial and politically charged as he performs the likes of 'Rich Man's World (1%)', a poignant track detailing the democratic corruption in America. During these tracks the audience simply watch on as Coronel delivers these scathing songs with such passion and aggression.

He thanks the crowd for allowing him to air his views and they cheer on as he makes speeches about current issues. It is unusual for a rap concert to make you think about the state of the world, yet by the fading notes of 'Caught In A Hustle' the audience leave in a state of confusion and gratitude.

Immortal Technique is the genuine article. His perspective is well thought-through and sincere. His stage presence is positive, provocative, and inspirational. Would go to an Immortal Technique show any day or night, anywhere in the world... but more importantly, I'd stand beside him when all the chips fall out there in the world; and I'd trust him to have my back. He shows mad respect to Women, all races, and has a true cultural foundation; this guy could actually carry out most of what he demands of so-called leaders in the world. It's obvious.

It was a really good show. Its started on time ..8:30 on the dot. Nice crowd..CF and Chino XL really set the tone for the night. This was my first Technique or Talib show ever and it was a great expirence.. Bucket list shit..The equipment was a bit off but that's the venue and a josh pit broke out which I thought was funny. Talib was cool enough to do a encore for the crowd. One of the best tours this summer.

Amazing and fun show, Immortal Technique is a pehnomenalnlive performer and he genuinely loves interacting with the fans. The other acts were also very fun to watch and gave it their all and everyone seemed to enjoy the show and have a great time.

Had a great time, Chino XL, Poison Pen, and Immortal Technique are legends of rap. The show was full of positive energy. Thanks to song kick for keeping me informed regarding events.

Tech is great live. You can see the passion he has for just causes. Wasn't a super long set but glad I went. I didn't stay for much of Cypress Hill.

How this was made.

• The recycled polyester used in Nike products begins as recycled plastic bottles, which are cleaned, shredded into flakes and converted into pellets. From there, the pellets are spun into new, high-quality yarn used in our products, delivering peak performance with a lower impact on the environment.
• In addition to reducing waste, recycled polyester reduces carbon emissions by up to 30% compared to virgin polyester. Nike diverts an average of 1 billion plastic bottles annually from landfills and waterways.
