Maui Christmas 2023 – Special Holiday Events & Things to Do

Christmas is such a special time to visit Maui! You’ll find the island decked out in lights, ornaments and Christmas cheer. Maui really knows how to celebrate the holidays with warm Aloha. As you’re making your Christmas vacation plans, we want to give you some special and meaningful ideas to celebrate the holiday season with Maui-style.

A note about Lahaina:

Before we go any further, we feel that it’s necessary to share this somber note about Lahaina. We’ve been creating these lists of special things to do for Christmas in Maui for more than a decade. One thing that’s very different for 2023 is that there are no events in Lahaina town due to the devastating fire in August. Lahaina is no t open to the public at this time .

Visitors are asked to be compassionate towards Maui residents as many fire victims are displaced in temporary housing. Many across the island are also in a state of mourning. Where possible please try to support the local economy by shopping local.

Christmas Shopping

Christmastime is a special time to shop in Maui. Consider buying locally made crafts and artwork for gifts.

You can find the big department stores in Kahului, but there are several shopping centers that are closer to the resort areas.

West Maui (Kaanapali, Kapalua)

  • We like Whalers Village in Kaanapali.
  • In year’s past, we listed several shopping spots in Lahaina. Sadly, many were destroyed in the wildfire of August 2023.
  • Every Wednesday in December, they’re hosting a free Mele Kalikimaka Show with free live music from 4:30pm to 6pm.
  • On December 9 and  16, they’re hosting  Festival of Harps accompanied by Madrigal from 5pm to 6:30pm.
  • On December 22 and 29, check out Holiday Spectacles with a Touch of Island Magic from 5:30pm to 7pm.
  • Check out their events calendar to find a free Polynesian show, cultural activities and visits from Santa leading up to Christmas.

Other unique Maui shops

  • If you want to experience a cooler climate, go upcountry to the paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) town of Makawao where you can browse through unique shops — such as  Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center which is decorated for the Hui Holidays .
  • The former sugar cane plantation town of Paia has some small, local shops.

Attend a Christmas Church Service

Attending a Christmas service is a wonderful way to celebrate the good news of hope for this season. It’s even more special when you do so in Maui.

Here are some services that have caught our eye for 2023. We’ll list these churches that are near the resort areas. To help you find a service near your accommodations, we’ll list the churches in geographical order.

West Maui – Kapalua, Lahaina areas

  • Maria Lanakila Catholic Church in Lahaina survived the fire, but public access is prohibited for the time being. Their sister church, Sacred Hearts Mission Church in Kapalua typically holds mass on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
  • Honolua United Methodist Church holds Christmas Eve Candlelight Service at 7pm. See this link for more details. (Added 12/16)
  • Harvest Kumulani Church in Kapalua holds Christmas Eve Candlelight Service at 6pm. See this link for more details. (Added 12/16)
  • Lahaina United Methodist Church was destroyed in the August fire. They are temporally holding services at Lahuiokalani Ka’anapali Congregation Church in Honokowai. They are holding Christmas Day service starting at 10am. See this link for more information.

South Maui – Kihei, Wailea

  • Hope Chapel in Kihei welcomes visitors for Christmas Candlelight services starting December 23 at 4pm and 6pm. Then they will hold three candlelight services on December 24 at 4pm, 6pm and 8pm. Check this page for more details.
  • St. Theresa Roman Catholic Church in Kihei offers several Christmas Eve (5pm and 9:30pm) and Christmas Day (7am and 9:30am) services. See this link for more details.
  • Calvary Chapel South Maui typically holds Christmas Eve services. TBD for 2023
  • Trinity Episcopal Church by the Sea typically holds Christmas Eve services. TBD for 2023

When you arrive on Maui, pick up a copy of the Maui News as Christmas Eve approaches. They’ll have more information about church services across Maui. Additionally, ask your concierge if they know of services that will be near to where you’re staying.

See Santa Claus as he visits Maui

Santa normally makes a few quick visits to Maui before heading back to the North Pole to load up his sleigh. Most often he’s dressed in his fun, Aloha attire.

  • Santa stops by the Shops at Wailea for free photos. Guests are asked to bring a donation to benefit the Maui Food Bank. Savor a Christmas feast

Many resorts across Maui will offer scrumptious multi-course dinners and/or buffets with menus specially designed for the holidays. Most hotel-based restaurants will be open.  Check directly with your hotel for details.

One quick source to search for restaurant availability online is via OpenTable . (Make sure you customize the search criteria.) I recommend you make reservations as soon as possible.

Explore the Hawaiian island-style Christmas decorations

Christmas decorations in Hawaii are really special and often convey a great sense of place. You may find tropical flowers adorning Christmas trees, tropical fish ornaments and other unique Hawaii-style decorations.

The hotels really do a fantastic job decorating for Christmas. For a nice stroll, head out on the oceanfront paths in either Kaanapali or Wailea or both. Along the way, pop into the hotels to check out their lobbies and entrances.

Some of the best resorts for seeing Christmas lights are:

  • Ritz Carlton Maui at Kapalua – While you’re there, check out the Holiday Hale in the lobby for a sweet treat.
  • Grand Wailea in Wailea in South Maui
  • Fairmont Kea Lani in Wailea in South Maui

Enjoy special holiday activities at Halona Kai Holiday Village

The third annual Halona Kai Holiday Village at the Hyatt Regency Maui, is set to take place from December 23 through 25. This year’s family-friendly village features a dinner buffet with festive music, Christmas-themed activities, a visit from Santa Claus and holiday movies at the Snowflake Cinema. Halona Kai Holiday Village is located at Hyatt Regency Maui Resort in Kaanapali. See this link for more information and to book tickets. 2023

Kiss your loved one under the Mistletoe at Montage

For something a bit more romantic, Montage Kapalua Bay invites guests and locals to step under the mistletoe and snap a special photo. Mistletoe at Montage will be located at the resort’s entrance. If you share your photo publicly on social media with the hashtags #MontageMistletoe and #MontageMemory, your photo might be featured on the resort’s Instagram account . While you’re there check out the beautiful decorations in the hotel’s lobby or make plans for an a glass of bubbly at the Champagne Hale at Cliff House . See more information about Mistletoe at Montage as well as other special holiday options at this link .

Finally, what about the tradition of Lahaina’s famous banyan tree wrapped in thousands of lights?

Due to the tragic wildfire in August 2023, much of Lahaina was destroyed. The 150-year-old banyan tree was badly burned, but is showing some signs of life. Access to Lahaina is highly restricted and the tree will not be wrapped in thousands of lights as it has been in the past. Visitors should not attempt to go into Lahaina.  We hope that as Lahaina heals, this banyan tree Christmas tradition can be continued in the future.

We recommend you speak to your hotel’s concierge for more options that will be held onsite or nearby your accommodation.  Also, pick up a copy of the Maui News when you are on island for additional restaurants and holiday activity suggestions.

The holiday time is a popular time to visit Maui. As such, be prepared by reading our advice — What you need to know about planning a Hawaii vacation around a holiday . If this is your first visit to Maui, check out our popular Maui vacation planner to help you make your itinerary.

We hope you’ll have a wonderful Christmastime on Maui. While you’re there, make sure you know how to wish someone a Merry Christmas in the Hawaiian language .

Bringing mom and dad to Maui for the first time and staying at Papakea. Where’s the best or closest place to take my four-year-old nephew to see Santa? What are some activities we should consider for my parents who are in their late 60s? What restaurants are close by for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day meals? Thank you!!!

Kaanapali and Kapalua activities and restaurants are closest to Papakea.

Top 5 things to do on Maui (not Christmas related) https://www.govisithawaii.com/2008/01/18/top-5-things-you-must-see-and-do-on-your-maui-vacation/

Santa arrives on an outrigger canoe at the Grand Wailea in December. You can also visit Santa at Queen Kaahumanu Center mall during the holiday season

This year we have so many wide-eyed keiki added to our family over the past 3 years and they are the perfect age to take a drive by a street of holiday lights… but whea? We’re in Wailuku.

Maybe see the lights on the big banyan tree in Lahaina. From what we’ve seen, the Grand Wailea has a lot of lights at the entrance that you could drive past. Hope that helps a little.

Bringing my family to Maui fir Christmas….3 teens, dad, mom me(Grama). Where is a great place for Christmas Day meal? I would like to make reservations. Also, Christmas Eve church service? Other Christmas activities you might suggest. Thank you

We won’t have this post updated until December. In the meantime, review what’s listed for an idea of what will likely happen again this coming Christmas.

Where on Island will you be staying?

The Wailea hotels have Christmas Day meals, and you might also try Mama’s Fish house or the Hali’imaile General Store. Kings Cathedral at 777 Maui Veteran’s Hwy has Christmas Eve as well as Christmas Day services and it’s centrally located.

Don’t forget Keawalai’i congregational church candlelight service. One not to be missed. In the old church by the ocean in Makenna

I’m looking for a nice show and/or dinner on December 24th. Is it more quiet that day on Maui or are there things going on? If so, which events can you recommend? Mahalo

Some luaus operate on Christmas Eve. Here’s a list of luaus on Maui: https://www.govisithawaii.com/2008/02/26/maui-luaus-prices-schedules-and-reviews/ Please consider that luaus often change dates, times, pricing, etc and we’ve not updated that list is a while. The links should all still be active for further investigation, checking availability, pricing, etc.

Also, if you are staying in a hotel, check to see what they might be offering. Ask your concierge for their advice.

Don’t forget holiday shopping at Ma’alaea! There you’ll find local retail stores as well as Pacific Whale Foundation’s retail store. Pacific Whale Foundation’s store has all kind of gift giving options, from apparel, to household to specialty foods. Many of the items are eco-friendly and/or made on Maui or in the Islands. Biggest benefit of shopping there is that all of the profits go back into research and education for protecting our marine animals and environment! Shopping to make a difference!

We are planning to be on Maui for Christmas 2020. We are seniors, our daughter and son-in-law, and three teenagers. Our daughter worked at the grand Wailea during their opening years

Coming to Maui to Celebrate Christmas 2020. Where can we have a nice Christmas lunch or dinner to celebrate the holiday ? How soon can we make the reservation ? Any concerts , parades or nay events scheduled ? We are close to Lahaina , Napili and Kaanapali. What activities are available ?

Due to COVID-19, most hotels and many restaurants are closed right now. So, it’s far too soon to even guess what’s going to happen in Maui for Christmas 2020. Additionally, the islands are not even open for tourism without first quarantining for 14 days at the moment.

Venues don’t typically announce what they’re going to offer until November or December. Subscribe to our free newsfeed to be in the know when we release the new holiday events.

We are going to Maui for the first time the week of Christmas and would love any itinerary advice with our two girls (8 and 10). Is the Santa canoeing to the Fairmont Kea Lani free to the public? Thanks.

Also, any suggestions to best place to go to for Christmas dinner?

The Santa arrival is open to the public as it is held on a beach. All beaches in Hawaii are open to the public.

This is our Maui itinerary, which you can adapt to your interests: https://www.govisithawaii.com/2016/08/02/seven-day-maui-vacation-itinerary/

christmas dinner cruise maui

Celebrating Christmas and New Year's in Maui offers a unique and enchanting experience, blending traditional holiday cheer with the island's vibrant Hawaiian customs. The festive season transforms this beautiful island into a magical destination, where the spirit of aloha merges with holiday festivities.

Let's dive into the activities and events that make Maui a special place during this time of year, highlighting the various services provided by destination Maui vacations and activity providers, the holiday movies that capture the essence of the season, and the unique Hawaiian traditions that give a tropical twist to the holidays.

Christmas in Maui

Christmas in Maui

Maui is an excellent destination for Christmas, celebrated with a unique blend of traditional holiday spirit and Hawaiian customs. Generally, there are many various Maui activities during the festive season, including cultural events at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center and whale-watching as the whale season begins.

The holiday season in South Maui, especially around Wailea Beach and Polo Beach, is vibrant with holiday events like Santa's arrival by outrigger canoe, creating a special time for visitors and locals alike. From the dazzling street of holiday lights to the serene services at Trinity Episcopal Church and Lanakila Catholic Church, Maui becomes a canvas of cultural and festive celebrations. However, it is also a busy period, with many seeking the beautiful island's warm weather and holiday cheer.

How Do You Celebrate Christmas in Maui?

The weather in Maui during Christmas is typically warm and inviting, perfect for beach activities and outdoor dining. Celebrations include traditional elements like luaus and church services in various congregations, including at Wailea Beach and Ka'anapali Beach, as well as unique Hawaiian traditions. Luaus for Christmas blends traditional luau elements with holiday festivities during Christmas and New Year's. Festive season dining experiences, like those offered by the Pacific Whale Foundation's dinner cruise departing from Ma'alaea Harbor, add richness to the holiday charm.

How Busy is Maui at Christmas?

Visiting Maui for Christmas can be a bustling busy environment, as it is a popular holiday destination. However, the range of holiday activity suggestions, from holiday shopping at Whalers Village to enjoying a special night of music, makes it a worthwhile experience.

Maui offers something for everyone, whether it's spending Christmas Eve dinner at a private table overlooking the ocean or joining a celebratory dinner buffet. For those wondering about the best place to spend Christmas in the Hawaiian Islands, Maui certainly stands out for its combination of festive activities, beautiful scenery, and warm, welcoming holiday spirit.

Meeting Santa on Christmas & Events in Maui

Santa can often be seen in several locations on Maui on December 24th. The most popular Santa arrival on Maui is when Santa comes sailing through the sea on an outrigger canoe onto Polo Beach. See: Santa's Arrival 2014 .

Other events in Maui can be difficult to find due to being locally hosted events throughout the island. These include luaus, singing, dancing, and many Christmas-related workshops for kids and families to enjoy. To stay updated on these events, searching through online guides and event calendars is the most efficient method. New Year's Eve in Maui

New Year's Eve in Maui

New Year’s Even in Maui like for Christmas holidays, becomes a hub of festive activities and local events. The Grand Wailea Resort traditionally hosts firework shows, visible from various locations in Wailea. For those seeking a unique experience, New Year's Eve cruises are available, offering a splendid view of the fireworks from the sea. Where Can You Watch Fireworks in Maui on New Year's Eve?

For those that aren't staying at the Grand Wailea, here are a few good options for watching the Grand Wailea's New Year's Eve fireworks:

  • Po'olenalena Beach Park , located just south of the Grand Wailea, offers great views of the fireworks over the water. The park has open lawns where you can set up blankets and chairs.
  • Wailea Beach is another public beach north of the Grand Wailea that has parking available and good lines of sight to watch the fireworks display from the shore.
  • If you don't mind a slightly more obstructed view, you could also watch from the parking lots of the nearby Shops at Wailea , which have been used as viewing spots in the past according to Grand Wailea's website.
  • Another option would be Polo Beach which allows you to see the fireworks from the shoreline there.

To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.

Dinner & Sunset Cruises in Maui Hawaii

Dinner cruises are available most evenings before sunset, with boats departing from Lahaina or Maʻalaea.  But should you take a dinner cruise, or should you take a daytime cruise and then go to dinner on land?

The advantage of a dinner cruise is that you have beautiful views of Maui and the neighboring islands of Lanai and Molokai from the ship, a lovely sunset, and dinner, all in one neat package.

If you would like to go on a dinner cruise during your Maui vacation, see the comparisons between some of the various available dinner cruise choices below.   Or click for more Maui Dinner Cruises .

Dinner Cruises

Details and differences to help you decide.

(Menu changes can occur, so check with each company for their latest food offerings.)

Quicksilver

This 55-foot catamaran has inside and outside seating and takes up to 66 passengers on its sunset dinner cruise.  It departs from Maalaea Harbor, from 4:30 to 6:30 PM or 5:00 to 7:00 PM depending on the season.  The prime rib (or chicken or fish) dinner comes with salad, potatoes, pasta, vegetables, fruit, and brownies. Trilogy Excursions

Savor sunset views and a deluxe four-course meal aboard Trilogy’s Captain Sunset Dinner Sail . With intimate two-top tables, this dinner sail is ideal for couples. The evening kicks off with drinks from the premium bar, which boasts a selection of local beer, wine, and hand-crafted cocktails. Dinner includes a scrumptious spread of appetizers, salad, and entrees like fresh, panko-crusted fish with lemon caper butter. Finally, the night reaches its zenith with a delectable dessert trio and fiery sunset. Trilogy’s dinner sails are offered Wednesday and Friday out of Maalaea Harbor and Thursday and Saturday from Lahaina Harbor.

Trilogy sunset tours

Take a tour of the south coast of Maui on Kai Kanani’s sailing catamaran on one of the best trips around.  They limit passengers well below capacity, so there’s lots of room.  The food is great, and the drinks fantastic.  They leave from the beach at Maluaka in Makena, so get ready to have your feet wet. Maui Custom Charters – S/V Artemis or S/V Nova

Maui Custom Charters creates unforgettable experiences through their extensive experience sailing in Hawaii. Offering intimate BYOB sunset sails complete with delicious appetizers, you have your choice of vessels. Maui Princess

This 120-foot yacht departs from Lahaina Harbor at 5:30 PM and returns at 8 PM.  There is one choice of salad, three choices of entree (roast chicken, prime rib of beef, vegetarian), one choice of potato and vegetable, and a couple of desserts, all included in the dinner cruise price.  You get table-side service, live music, and dancing on the ship.

This is the most luxurious dinner cruise, on a premier 65-foot catamaran taking a maximum of only 30 passengers at just 10 tables on their dinner cruise.  There’s an open bar, and the dinner menu includes Vegetable Crudités, Assorted Cheese & Crackers, Salad bar (Upcountry Greens, Cherry Tomatoes, Shredded Carrots, Sliced Cucumbers, Artichoke Hearts, Assorted Selection of Olives, Bean Salad, Baby Corn), Market Prawns, Stir Fry Seasonal Vegetables, Scallop Potatoes, Grilled Fresh Fish with Mai Tai Sauce, Teriyaki Chicken Breast, Prime Rib, and Dessert.  The cruise is from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM and includes free pickup and dropoff at your hotel or condo for the resort sections of Maui.

This catamaran offers a more casual sunset cruise that departs from the sands of Kaʻanapali Beach rather than from one of Maui’s  harbors.  The 2 1/2 hour cruise includes an Italian buffet of Caesar salad, grilled vegetable ratatouille, penne pasta, baked chicken in Alfredo sauce, grilled ono (fish) in garlic basil pesto, and desserts.

Reminder:   menus and amenities or entertainment often change, so check before you go to be sure what foods will be served and what else will be offered on your dinner cruise.

Cancellation Policy

Change policy, what if i am prone to seasickness.

If you know you are prone to sea sickness we recommend taking over the counter motion sickness preventative before your tour. These come in handy particularly for evening sails as seas can get more choppy.

How far in advance should I book this activity?

We recommend booking at least 1-2 weeks in advance. If you have very specific schedule requirements and are not flexible, please book sooner. Last minute availability is often possible, but limited.

What should I wear to this activity?

We recommend that you keep your attire casual and make sure you bring something warm like a good jacket - we don't recommend a dress on this cruise as it gets very windy and you will be walking up and down stairs.

What is on the dinner menu?

What type of boat is used.

The Maui Princess is a high-speed 118-foot luxury touring yacht designed for maximum passenger comfort, with an air conditioned main cabin, spacious open air observation deck, cocktail lounge and snack bar. The Maui Princess is U.S. Coast Guard certified and approved for 149 passengers.

Is the activity provider doing their part to help protect the ocean?

A portion of all proceeds goes toward the Hawaii Ocean Project's continuing efforts to supply direct funding to accredited researchers whose work revolves around understanding and protecting our oceans and their inhabitants.

Nine things to do in Moscow at Christmas

Moscow at Christmas

Explore Moscow Christmas Markets

Christmas markets in Moscow

  • In Russia, the official holidays start from January 1 and usually last for 10-12 days. These days all venues of the festival will be very crowded with locals. It might be better to explore Christmas fairs at the end of December.
  •  It's good to know that officials often limit Red Square excess on the night of December 31. A better place to watch the fireworks at night would be neighboring Zaradje Park.

Red Square at Christmas

Practice skating

Skating on Red Square

Enjoy Moscow museums without crowds.

Kremlin at Christmas times

  • It gets dark around 4 pm in December. You'd better plan more outside activities in the morning and visit museums after lunch.
  • On December 31 most museums are open only in the morning, January 1 is a day off in many museums around Moscow.
  • Some museums might be very crowded later in the first week of January during the official Russian holidays. At the start of the New Year between 2–7 January, some museums offer free admission. We'd suggest not going to the most popular ones such as the Space Museum as there might be a long line of people at the entrance.

Watch a mesmerizing ballet performance

The Nutcracker performance

  • The Kremlin Ballet Theatre, which is located right inside the Kremlin. This is the website https://en.kremlinpalace.org/events/ballet
  • Novaya Opera Theatre. The theatre mostly focuses on opera but it also offers high-quality ballet performances.  You can find tickets at a very affordable price. The theatre is very comfortable inside and is located in a cozy Hermitage garden with a skating rink and restaurants. Their website is https://novayaopera.ru/en/afisha-i-bilety/
  • Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theater is another alternative to the Bolshoi and is a good value for money. Both music and dancing are of high quality. The theatre is not as luxurious as the Bolshoi, but very well-organized and comfortable.

Classic Christmas Markets

A cruise for those wanting to experience the quintessential magic of the holidays.

Discover villages with fairytale houses and a friendly, festive atmosphere. Share traditional holiday goodies with the people who made them. Watch as modern children abandon their usual electronics and discover the enchantment of hand-carved wooden toys, as scents of cinnamon and roasting nuts fill the air.

Sail through Christmas country, trying Frankfurt’s famous apple cider and Nuremberg’s gingerbread. Throughout, cozy up to steaming mugs of glühwein (warm spiced wine) and do as the locals do by collecting different mugs from each stall and town you visit. Embrace the holiday spirit in Germany, the land where many Christmas traditions began, and find the magic of the season in the smiles that you meet along the way.

For a holiday extravaganza, look no further than Nuremberg, which boasts the largest and grandest Christmas Market in all of Germany— and that’s really saying something. The “Gingerbread Capital of the World” pulls out all the stops during the holidays, as you’ll see for yourself on a panoramic tour guaranteed to put you in a festive mood. You could not ask for a more perfect place to begin an exploration of Christmas traditions than Nuremberg. Stroll through the castle gardens and enjoy breathtaking views of the city, then walk through a maze of cobblestone lanes down to the central Market Square. There, spread out before the Church of Our Lady, is the largest Christmas Market in Germany.

A special Captain’s Welcome Reception and Dinner will be prepared for you this evening.

Beautiful at any time, Nuremberg’s Old Town is especially magical when dressed in all of its holiday splendor. Stroll through the castle gardens and enjoy breathtaking views of the city, then walk through a maze of cobblestone lanes down to the central Market Square. There, spread out before the Church of Our Lady, is the largest Christmas market in Germany. Two hundred stalls filled with holiday wares—ornaments, nutcrackers, seasonal treats, and hand-carved toys—await you, and the irresistible aromas of roasting nuts, cinnamon, and grilled sausages waft through the air.

Adding to the fun is an area set aside especially for children, complete with a two-tiered carousel featuring carved reindeer and Santa’s sleigh. As you wander through the market, you will certainly want to indulge in some of the city’s famous gingerbread; after all, Nuremberg is known as the “Gingerbread Capital of the World.”

Please note that on or after Christmas Eve, the Christmas Market will likely have ended its season and not be part of this tour.

Masterpiece Collection Providing the most all-inclusive luxury to our guests is the heart and soul of our brand and that will never change. Yet sometimes our guests want something that goes even "above and beyond" our included experiences. In light of this, we now offer guests a curated selection of optional excursions, available for an additional charge.

Nuremberg wwii historical tour.

Hitler considered Nuremberg the perfect expression of German culture and chose it as the location for his massive rallies and most grandiose building schemes. Visit the Party Rally Grounds and the Documentation Center's exhibit on the rise and fall of the Nazis, and see the Nuremberg Memoriam, which gives you a view of Courtroom 600, where 21 Nazi war criminals were tried in 1945-it remains an active courtroom and cannot be viewed during court proceedings, though the displays, including pieces of the original dock, can be seen.

*Masterpiece Collection are optional experiences that go above and beyond our daily selection of included excursions and can be booked for an additional fee. Select Masterpiece Collection Optional Experiences can be pre-booked. Please note that requests to pre-book must be made by calling our Reservations Team no later than 6 days prior to departure and are subject to availability. Some venues are limited in the number of guests they can accommodate. Guests can book onboard (space permitting) and pay in Euros. Pre-booked Masterpiece Collection Optional Experiences are refundable up to 48 hours prior to the cruise/tour start date; if inside of 48 hours they are non-refundable. Select Masterpiece Collection Optional Experiences require a minimum number of participants and are subject to cancellation (with full refund) if minimum is not met. Masterpiece Collection Optional Experiences are non-commissionable. Prices are subject to change. Masterpiece Collection excursions may not operate if they occur on a holiday or if they require a minimum number of participants and that minimum is not met.

Bamberg

The fact that Bamberg still exists today is something of a miracle—it survived WWII bombing virtually unscathed. It’s a superb example of a medieval German city, one compact enough to explore on foot with a local expert. You’ll also have free time to visit not just one but four Christmas Markets and a captivating amount of nativity scenes located along nativity trail.

The entire heart of historic Bamberg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; it is yours to explore today. In the splendid late-Romanesque Imperial Cathedral you will find the only papal tomb in Germany, that of Pope Clement II (who was the bishop of Bamberg before he became pope), as well as the tomb of Emperor Henry II (who established the bishopric). Near it are two magnificent palaces: The Old Palace, the late-Gothic imperial residence (if you saw the 2011 3-D version of The Three Musketeers, you’ll recognize it immediately), sits across from the New Residence, where the 17th-century prince-bishops lived. Cross the footbridge to the old Town Hall; legend has it that the bishop refused to give the town land for their town hall, so they built an artificial island for it smack in the middle of the Regnitz River. You’ll also see parts of Bamberg’s famous Nativity Walk, which links 35 churches, museums, and public spaces that display Nativity scenes; some made hundreds of years ago.

When the tour concludes, you’ll have time to explore Bamberg’s Christmas Market, which is actually four markets: the traditional one on the Market Square, one featuring medieval cultural programs, and two markets that focus on local arts and crafts. Shuttles will be provided throughout the afternoon to take you between the ship and town.

Bamberg Beer Experience

For VIP access to a classic German experience, enter the halls of Kundmüller Brewery. You’ll be treated to a close-up view of their operations and introduced to their beers with a tasting and some light snacks.

Würzburg

Rothenburg looks like something straight out of the pages of a storybook, with its medieval walls, cobbled streets, Gothic churches, and Hansel-and-Gretel houses. Join a local expert for an insightful walking tour, and then wander amongst the stalls at one of Germany’s oldest Christmas markets

Today’s lunch will be on your own.

Rothenburg really does look like a fairytale version of the Middle Ages. Great stone walls surrounding the medieval core stand tall, linking towers, bastions, and parapets, and timber-framed houses decked out for the holidays line the narrow cobblestone streets and tiny squares. Walk with a local expert to the magnificent Town Hall, whose Gothic, Renaissance, and baroque features reveal its long history. The Gothic Franciscan Church is revered for its famous Tilman Riemenschneider altarpiece depicting St. Francis receiving the stigmata.

Your local expert can suggest the best places to enjoy a lunch on your own before you wander among the stalls of one of Germany’s oldest and most celebrated Christmas markets. You’ll find charming handcrafted wares and souvenirs, as well as pastries and mulled wine to keep you warm. Don’t miss a favorite seasonal treat, the schneeball , or snowball, made from strips of sweet dough shaped into a ball that is fried and covered in powdered sugar or chocolate. Be sure to check out the original Käthe Wohlfahrt Christmas Store opposite the market. A huge Christmas tree revolves in the center of the store, and some 35,000 Christmas-themed items line the shelves.

Just before dinner, we'll take a walk together to Würzburg’s glorious Christmas Market, which is held in the square in front of the old City Hall. Beautifully decorated wooden booths are illuminated by the soft glow of Christmas lighting, and the air is filled with the scent of roasted chestnuts and the sound of Christmas carols. As you rove among the booths, you can watch glassblowers and wood carvers at work and buy their handiwork directly from them.

Würzburg

This morning, you’ll head off to see the Würzburg Residence, a baroque-style palace famous for its gigantic ceiling fresco. Later, visit the town’s renowned Christmas Market, held in front of the old City Hall, for some one-of-a-kind gifts for friends back home. Beautifully decorated wooden booths are illuminated by the soft glow of Christmas lighting, and the air is filled with the scent of roasted chestnuts and the sound of Christmas carols. One of the best ways to embrace a different culture is through encounters with local residents, which you’ll experience this afternoon in a typical Franconian village. Make new friends over hot drinks and homemade seasonal treats.

This 300-room UNESCO World Heritage–designated residence was constructed over a period of 60 years in the 18th century. An extraordinarily lavish palace, it was created under the auspices of two Schönborn prince-bishops, Lothar Franz and Friedrich Carl, who brought enormous knowledge and passion to the project, as well as a budget for the best of the best. The magnificent grand staircase boasts the world’s largest ceiling fresco, painted by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. Portions of the building were damaged by Allied bombing in 1945, but fortunately most of the historic furnishings had been stored off-site and key rooms were unharmed, so you can see the original—and matchless—artwork, gilding, and statuary. Check out the spectacular Hall of Mirrors and the imposing Imperial Hall, which boasts a large oval dome and 20 half-columns.

At the conclusion of your tour, you’ll head back to the local Christmas Market. Catch up on any shopping you missed the night before, or just warm your hands with a mug of mulled wine before heading back to the ship.

Travel through Franconia’s rolling hills and farms to the picture-perfect village of Aschfeld, which features a historic church with a defensive wall that protected residents throughout the Middle Ages, After your visit to the Heimatmuseum at the Fortified Church, sample some homemade Christmas goodies such as cookies, stollen, and gingerbread, along with coffee and tea. The locals' English-speaking abilities vary, so this is a great opportunity for you to try out your German, just as they are trying out their English. Here’s one phrase you might want to know: “ Fröhliche Weihnachten ,” which means “Merry Christmas!”

Wertheim

Located at the confluence of the Tauber and Main rivers, Wertheim is a lovely village dating back over a thousand years. It epitomizes the friendly, slow-paced small-town atmosphere of many German villages; here, residents greet each other by name as they do their daily shopping for fresh bread and sausage in tiny shops. On your guided walking tour of the village, you’ll hear a lot about daily life in Wertheim, as well as facts about the town and its history. Its many well-preserved medieval buildings—complete with low doors and tiny windows—attest to the inconveniences of life in the Middle Ages.

While you're still onboard, enjoy a cup of mulled wine and join a stollen (traditional German fruitcake) baking demonstration by a master baker. Then venture into town where you’ll see the dramatic ruins of Wertheim Castle standing high above the village as you ramble through the narrow streets, passing small bakeries and butcher shops. The counts of Wertheim began building this huge fortress in the 12th century, and the town grew up in its shelter. Wertheim had defenses of its own too: The Pointed Tower, a former watchtower also used as a jail for drunkards and shrews in the 13th-century, still stands, leaning slightly toward its neighbors, not from age but because flood waters have undermined it. It’s not the only architectural wonder you’ll pass: Blue House’s spectacular half-timbering is painted with an unusual cobalt glass-based paint, and Zobel House is just 10 feet (3 meters) wide at its base. In the Market Square, you’ll see St. Mary’s Chapel, which was erected in 1447; the step-gabled house built for 16th-century wine merchant Lorenz Baunach; and the 1574 Angels’ Well, which derives its name from the two little angels that hold Wertheim’s coat of arms. After the tour you can stay in town to shop for keepsakes or visit the Glass Museum before making your way back to the ship.

Frankfurt

Frankfurt is known as the “Mainhattan” of Europe, a financial powerhouse with soaring skyscrapers, but that’s done nothing to diminish the cultural heart of the city. Frankfurt’s old town, the Altstadt, is as charming as it gets, and has hosted some of the best Christmas markets on the continent for centuries. Opt to stay in town today for a “Taste of Christmas” walking tour featuring all sorts of sugary and savory treats, or alternatively, head out of town on an excursion to the Christmas market in Wiesbaden.

A special Captain’s Farewell Reception and Dinner will be prepared for you this evening.

What better way to end your holiday cruise than by sampling some of the seasonal specialties of this region? Join your local expert for an exploration of Frankfurt’s culinary delicacies, including holiday treats such as bethmännchen , a marzipan- filled pastry named for a 19th-century banking family, and quetschemännchen , quirky little plum-and-nut figures that are traditionally made for the season (they were also traditionally sent by a young man to the young lady he was interested in; if she accepted one from him, she accepted him also). These are just a couple of the treats awaiting you as you ramble through the picturesque area around historic Römer Square, where markets have been held since the 13th-century. Tall half-timbered houses, including the old Town Hall, enclose the square, which has hosted a Christmas market since the 1390s. Now you’ll find long rows of gaily decorated stalls filled with imaginative crafts and delicious foods, one last delightful market for you to enjoy before you head home.
