International Health Insurance in Australia

Get private health insurance in Australia with Cigna Healthcare and let us take care of the hassle.

Australia has golden beaches, great weather, and new opportunities, all of which makes it very appealing for expats.

‘Down Under’ has one of the longest life expectancies in the world. This is partly down to their health system - Medicare. This is a public system providing free or low-cost service for citizens, as well as New Zealanders and those from countries with reciprocal agreements.

How does the healthcare system work in Australia?

Australia’s healthcare system, known as Medicare, guarantees all citizens healthcare at a low, or no cost.Medicare’s funding comes from a mixture of sources.

Government inputs, private coverage and individual fees combine to cover the costs of medical treatment.

The system helps with the costs of hospital visits, medical treatments, scans, and imagery.

Some residents, depending on their personal circumstances, will also benefit from reduced prescription costs as part of the Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme (PBS).

You’ll qualify for government-run healthcare if you’re:

  • An Australian or New Zealand citizen.
  • An Australian permanent resident.
  • Have applied for permanent residency in Australia.
  • Be a temporary resident covered by a ministerial order.
  • Be a citizen or permanent resident or the Norfolk Islands, Cocos Island, Christmas Island or Lord Howe Island.

If you don’t fit into the above, you’ll be expected to foot the full price of healthcare during your time in the country. That’s where expat insurance in Australia can come in handy.

Staying healthy in Australia

Pros and cons of using Australia's healthcare system

  • Free/very low cost to use.
  • High standard of care provision.
  • Covers a wide range of services, from hospitals to mental health and maternity care.
  • Difficult for visitors and expats to use unless you’re in the process of securing residency.
  • Dental services not included.
  • Can be long waiting times.

What’s the difference between public and private care in Australia?

How can international health insurance help you in australia.

Getting private health insurance in Australia is essential if you don’t fit the requirements for Medicare. Non-residents and new arrivals will need to protect their health with comprehensive insurance coverage. If you’re here for study or are awaiting residency, you should consider protecting your health and finances from accidents and mishaps.

Expat coverage provides broader protection, including prescription medications, doctor visits and emergency services. You’ll also be able to access treatment faster and more efficiently than much of Australia’s public system.

It's essential to carefully review the terms and conditions of any international health insurance policy before purchasing to ensure that it meets your specific needs and provides adequate coverage for your situation in Australia.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do i get international health insurance.

With Cigna, it's easy to start building your international health insurance plan. To find the right cover for you, start by getting a quote online. You’ll be asked a few basic questions like who to cover, where you're based, and how long you'd like the cover for. You'll receive an indication of price straight away and one of our team-members will be in touch to answer any questions and set up cover over the phone.

What's the difference between international health insurance and travel insurance?

International health insurance policies are designed for people living or working overseas long term. It covers treatment for both emergency and routine health care, and provides expats with flexibility in terms of choice of doctor and treatment facility, with the ability to receive treatment anywhere within their region of cover. A travel insurance policy is designed to cover short trips abroad, such as a holiday or business trip. This kind of insurance only offers short term cover for medical emergencies, and some non-medical benefits like cover for lost luggage or trip disruptions.

Why do expats need insurance?

The quality of health care can vary widely around the world. The quality of care in your new country may not be to the standard you were used to back home. In addition, as a foreign national, you and your family may not be entitled to any free or subsidized health care. It is therefore important to consider an expat health plan to provide for the health care needs of you and your family.

What does expat health insurance cover?

A Cigna expat health insurance policy is flexible to your needs. Start with one of our core insurance policies - these provide protection for essential hospital stays and treatment. Surgeon and consultation fees and hospital accommodation are also covered. Inpatient, outpatient and cancer treatments are also provided for. In addition, our Gold and Platinum core policies offer levels of cover for routine maternity needs.

You can tailor your policy with a range of optional benefits. International Outpatient provides you with more extensive outpatient cover including doctor’s visits and prescriptions. In addition, you can add medical evacuation, health and well-being and vision and dental benefits to your policy.

How much does expat health insurance cost?

The cost of health insurance will vary by plan and insurer. Some insurers might offer you cheap plans, but the cover they provide may be significantly less. At Cigna we work hard to ensure that we keep our levels of cover high and prices down. Our plans are flexible and tailored to you.

What countries can international health insurance cover me for?

You can choose to be covered anywhere in the world. And your cover travels with you, whether you're moving between two countries or travelling more extensively.

Different types of travel insurance

Do you need travel insurance for australia, which credit cards offer australia travel insurance, other ways to get travel insurance, if you want to get travel insurance for australia.

Now open to tourists after two years of pandemic-related closures, Australia is back on many travelers’ wish lists, and for good reason. Whether you’re interested in surfing on the Gold Coast, taking a road trip through the Outback or diving along the Great Barrier Reef, there are a lot of options to consider. But with so many adventurous — and potentially dangerous — activities, you may also want to think about purchasing travel insurance.

Let’s take a look at the different types of travel insurance for Australia, which credit cards provide complimentary coverage and other ways you can acquire insurance for added peace of mind.

A must-have for many, travel insurance can help cover unexpected costs related to travel mishaps, medical incidents or evacuations. However, not all travel insurance is created equal. There are a variety of types available for every kind of situation, and you’ll need to do some research to understand what’s worth purchasing and what might not be necessary.

Here are some common types of travel insurance:

Trip cancellation insurance . Used to recoup costs when you cancel a trip due to something unanticipated, like a medical issue.

Trip interruption insurance . Reimburses you for travel costs when you need to cut a trip short and return home unexpectedly.

Baggage loss insurance . Provides reimbursement when your baggage is lost, damaged or stolen.

Emergency evacuation insurance . Covers costs related to evacuating you to a different location, either for medical or safety reasons.

Travel medical insurance . Used to cover medical costs while traveling, either as a primary or secondary insurer, depending on the type of coverage you purchase.

Cancel for Any Reason insurance . A supplemental insurance that provides partial reimbursement of nonrefundable travel costs when you cancel a trip for any reason.

Rental car insurance . Covers costs related to damage or repair of a rental vehicle. This can be especially useful when renting a car in another country.

Accidental death insurance. Similar to life insurance, this coverage provides payment to a person of your choosing in case of death while you’re traveling.

You may also want to consider finding insurance that covers COVID quarantine costs. Not all policies include this coverage, so you’ll want to be sure it’s included if it’s important to you.

While it’s not required for entry, it may be a good idea. Travel insurance can come in useful just about anywhere, especially because it’s difficult to anticipate things like travel delays and accidents.

If you’re fairly confident about your travel plans, you may be comfortable with the insurance provided by your credit cards, though be aware that they may have lower limits than you’d like.

Otherwise, purchasing a travel insurance policy is always an option. Keep in mind that rates will vary according to your travel destination, dates of travel, ages and total trip cost.

» Learn more: What you need to know before shopping for travel insurance

Even if you’ve decided not to buy travel insurance, you may already have some coverage. Plenty of travel cards include some form of complimentary travel insurance, though the types — and limits — you receive will vary depending on which card you hold.

Many Chase credit cards offer primary rental car insurance, which will cover you in the event of an accident without needing to involve your personal auto insurance company. You’ll need to decline the rental car company’s coverage and pay with your eligible Chase card .

You can find trip delay insurance, emergency medical evacuation, lost baggage coverage and more among the different protections offered by these cards. Here are some of the more common travel cards that provide complimentary travel insurance.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card .

Chase Sapphire Reserve® .

The Platinum Card® from American Express . Terms apply.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card . (Benefits may change over time.)

United℠ Explorer Card .

You’ll want to read each card’s benefits guide very carefully before deciding which card to use. For example, both the The Platinum Card® from American Express and the Chase Sapphire Reserve® offer lost luggage insurance. Terms apply.

However, insurance from the The Platinum Card® from American Express only applies in the event that you’ve either paid for the full fare with your AmEx card or have redeemed your AmEx points for the flight. Using your card to pay the taxes and fees on an award flight you’ve booked elsewhere — such as redeeming Delta SkyMiles for your flight — does not mean that you’ll receive insurance coverage benefits. Terms apply.

This is in contrast to the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , whose lost luggage benefit is much more generous. In the event that your luggage is lost, you need only have paid the remainder of the charges for the flight after redeeming reward miles, points, coupons or other certificates. This means that charging just the taxes and fees on your card renders you eligible for benefits.

Aside from American Express and Chase cards, you may also want to consider the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card .

Capital One’s offering includes a plethora of travel insurance benefits, including primary rental car insurance, travel accident insurance, trip cancellation and interruption insurance, lost luggage reimbursement, trip delay reimbursement, travel and emergency assistive services and more. Of course, in order to qualify for these benefits, you’ll need to have charged the trip to your card. Benefits may change over time.

» Learn more: The best credit cards with travel insurance

Even if your card provides complimentary travel insurance, you may also want to consider acquiring an additional policy — especially if you’re planning on some of the more adventurous activities you’ll find within Australia, such as camping in the Outback.

Health insurance benefits provided by credit cards such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve® max out at relatively low levels, which may mean you end up paying out of pocket in the event of an emergency.

If you’re looking for a supplemental policy, you’ll want to check quotes from a variety of providers. You can do this manually, but websites such as Squaremouth will compare multiple policies at once, making it much easier to peruse offerings. You can also filter your search according to the type of coverage you’d like.

» Learn more: Is travel insurance worth it?

Travel insurance can provide peace of mind to the wary traveler. Whether or not you’re interested in purchasing travel insurance, a variety of credit cards offer complimentary coverage for incidents such as trip delays, emergency medical care, rental car collisions and lost luggage.

Otherwise, you may want to consider buying an additional policy to ensure that you’re covered. If this is what you’re looking to do, make sure to acquire quotes from a variety of providers in order to find the best deal possible.

For Capital One products listed on this page, some of the above benefits are provided by Visa® or Mastercard® and may vary by product. See the respective Guide to Benefits for details, as terms and exclusions apply.

A bit of advice/explanation

Cigna Global Individual Private Medical Insurance provides excellent health insurance overseas for the most discerning expatriates and globally mobile individuals. There are three coverage levels, various additions, and an array of deductible and cost share options. You can be sure to find a plan which meets both your exacting overseas health requirements and your budget. Coverage is available for expatriates, business people working overseas and international volunteers with NGOs. Also nonprofits, humanitarian organizations and the faith-based community.

The Cigna Global travel insurance plans have a unique way of operating. Let’s start from the beginning, which is the coverage that is provided at minimum – the Core! The Core coverage on these plans is for hospitalizations, inpatient psychiatric care, and cancer. Newborn care is also included for all three levels of coverage. Maternity benefits are included with Gold and Platinum after 12 months of coverage. Expenses from doctors visits, prescriptions or medications, and physiotherapy or physical therapy are not covered at the Core coverages.

You may add the following modules to your coverage. Each of these coverage levels provides additional benefits, which are tailored for maximum proficiency. This is a prominent reason that the Cigna Global plans are extraordinary health insurance overseas!

International Outpatient :

This module is for expenses from lab work, doctors visits, prescriptions and physical therapy. Also immunizations, as well as annual routine for children and well child tests. The higher the level of coverage, the lower the caps are on some benefits.

International Medical Evacuation :

This coverage is highly recommended for any type of international travel. International medical evacuation insurance is designed to provide transportation to the nearest adequate medical facility for necessary treatment. This is if there is no local treatment available for the immediate medical necessity. Adding this module will provider you with not only medical evacuation coverage, but also repatriation of mortal remains, compassionate visit, and more. All of the benefits are the same for every level of coverage.

Even though great hospitals may be in your destination, they may not be able to handle every type of medical condition. We never want any individual, or their families, to be stuck with a medical evacuation bill!

International Health and Wellbeing :

This is a wonderful addition to support overall health and wellbeing! It is a rich resource that gives you access for health screenings and check-ups, physical exams, counseling, dietetic consultations, and online education and programs. All of this can be included to help you get the most out of your overseas medical insurance.

International Vision and Dental :

General coverage for tests, preventative care, and some coverage for treatment and materials relating to Dental and Vision.

U.S. Coverage :

Having U.S. coverage is very important for those with travels to the U.S.A., and for U.S. citizens. Coverage up to six months per year is available on the Cigna Global international health and travel insurance. Even if a U.S. citizen doesn’t plan to come back to the U.S., if a serious medical condition occurs, they sometimes go back to the U.S. for care. Citizens of other countries traveling outside the U.S. will save money by not selecting this module.

In Summary:

For the Core and for the International Outpatient module, you have the option to choose your deductibles, as well as cost sharing. Cost sharing is where you can choose a sum of money to pay a percentage of after the deductible. The higher the amount and percentage you pay with the cost share, the lower the premium will be. On the other hand, the higher your deductible and cost share you have, the more you will pay before full benefits kick in. When you get quotes, you will see how each module affects the premium.

Overall, this Cigna Global international health and Cigna travel insurance is extraordinary coverage and gives you many options to create a health benefit package to fit your needs and travel plans.

Getting care while traveling just got easier

Kaiser Permanente’s agreement with Cigna provides more convenient access to care when you’re away from home.

The last thing anyone wants to worry about while traveling for work or on vacation is how to get emergency or urgent health care if you need it during your trip. A new collaboration with Cigna eases that concern for Kaiser Permanente members.

Our members who are away from home can now access Cigna’s national PPO, or preferred provider organization, network of physicians and providers should they need emergency or urgent care during their travels.

“This new feature provides our members an improved experience, added convenience, and greater confidence that if they get sick or are injured while away from home, they will have access to great care,” said Arthur Southam , MD, executive vice president of health plan operations for Kaiser Permanente. “This gives our members another option to get the high-quality care they need, wherever they are.”

More ways to get care

Our members now have even more ways to get care when and how they need it — virtually and in person. With Get Care Now on kp.org , members have 24/7 access to care from Kaiser Permanente health care professionals by phone or video. For in-person care while away from home, Kaiser Permanente members are covered for urgent and emergency care, anywhere in the world. This new access to Cigna’s U.S. provider network makes getting that care easier and more convenient.

As part of this improved experience with Cigna, members with Kaiser Permanente HMO or exclusive provider organization plans won’t pay up front or have to file a claim for reimbursement — they will only be responsible for their regular copay or other cost share.

And if it’s more convenient, members can still go to any urgent or emergency care facility while traveling and submit a claim to Kaiser Permanente for reimbursement.

Travel insurance for Canada isn’t compulsory, but it’s highly recommended to cover for any lost or stolen baggage, the possibility of your trip getting cancelled due to an emergency, illness such as Covid-19 or bereavement, and to cover medical expenses.

The Australian Government’s Smartraveller website recommends that travellers purchase travel insurance before any overseas trip.

As in any foreign country, medical care in Canada can be expensive for visitors, with a visit to a doctor potentially setting you back by hundreds of dollars.

The Australian government won’t cover these costs, and there is no reciprocal healthcare agreement between Australia and Canada, so you aren’t covered by Australian Medicare either.

In addition, given the large geography of the country covering a variety of destinations from beaches to mountains to national parks, it is wise to hold insurance cover for a multitude of events and a variety of potential risks including natural disasters, crime or other types of emergencies.

International travel cover for Canada is generally available in the following ways:

Basic travel insurance

This type of policy is broadly focused on cover for unlimited overseas emergency medical expenses, but also includes insurance for luggage, personal liability and other essential benefits. It is usually the cheapest option available and is suitable for those traveling on a budget or for single trips.

Comprehensive travel insurance

This type of insurance typically includes higher amounts of cover for the essentials benefits such as medical expenses, luggage, personal liability, and so on. In addition, it includes cover for travel delays, rental vehicle excess, loss of passports and credit cards, hijacking, disability, accidental death, and more, depending on your policy.

Some insurers offer variations of the comprehensive policy that are suitable for multiple trips within a 12-month period.

Optional add-on policies

Given the growing number of Australians heading to Canada for cruises, road trips or to the ski slopes, some insurers have come up with add-on policies specifically tailored for a variety of adventure sports and transport options available. These include cruise packs, winter sports packs and even higher cover for rental vehicles.

Related: How Much Does Travel Insurance Cost?

Most international travel insurance policies will cover medical and hospital expenses, ambulance transportation, repatriation flights, as well as personal liability if you injure someone, or damage property while you’re in the country.

Policies will also cover, within limits, lost or delayed luggage and possessions, the costs of trip delays, interruptions or cancellations, and lost or stolen travel documents.

Comprehensive policies usually offer a broader cover to include personal accident cover in case of an injury during your trip that leads to permanent disability or death, and insurance excess payment if your rental car meets with an accident.

If you are planning to take advantage of Canada’s vast offering of adventure sports and activities, make sure these are covered by your policy—or that there is an option to add it on.

Most comprehensive policies will include popular sporting and leisure activities such as hiking, surfing, kayaking, and so on. However, more extreme activities such as skydiving, scuba diving, snow skiing or snowboarding will generally require an additional adventure sports cover at extra cost.

Most travel insurance policies to Canada will not provide cover in the following cases:

  • Illegal activities: Insurers will reject any claims arising if you knowingly act illegally or dangerously.
  • If you are under the influence: Insurance cover is specifically void if you cause a disturbance through drunken behaviour or under the influence of drugs.
  • Unattended luggage: Insurers will ignore any claim for loss if your luggage is stolen while it was left unattended in public.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions: Insurers can avoid claims for any major medical conditions, if they have not been made aware of these before taking out a policy.
  • Extreme sports: International travel insurance policies generally don’t provide automatic coverage for things like extreme sports, snowboarding or surfing. An optional add-on cover is required for these activities.

Most travel insurers in Australia offer insurance policies for travel to Canada. What policy suits you best will depend on your requirements including duration, age, and the type of cover.

It will also be determined by your specific needs, such as whether you are taking part in snow sports or other adventure activities.

An easy way to compare travel insurance policies is to use an online comparison tool, or read through our leading picks of travel insurance policies for Australians . However, always consider whether or not they include the extras you will require for your trip, and any pre-existing medical conditions you would require cover for.

Do I need travel insurance to travel to Canada?

Travel insurance for Canada isn’t mandatory, but is highly recommended.

The Australian Government urges travellers to purchase travel insurance before any overseas trip, especially for medical cover.

Medical costs can be extremely expensive in a foreign country, especially if you have to visit a doctor, dentist or hospital in an emergency, so travel insurance is very handy.

Does my visa card have travel insurance?

Not every credit card comes with travel insurance. Complimentary travel insurance is typically offered on premium credit or rewards cards that have higher annual fees. In addition, this may not cover all circumstances or emergencies. By comparison, a travel insurance policy will offer more comprehensive coverage that includes emergency medical expenses.
