Self-Guided Hiking in Cinque Terre, Italy
March through October
Genoa, Italy is 1 hour away
Private rooms in hotels
Cinque Terre is too beautiful to be rushed—explore it at your own pace, but with accommodation and support arranged
Things to know
Ever seen pictures of Cinque Terre? You must have: this is Italy at its most romantic. Perched on cliffs of the Italian riviera, the string of five picturesque fisherman villages is everything a traveler—or a postcard maker—could dream of. The Mediterranean sun, the Ligurian Sea, the medieval architecture, and the Italian cuisine—this is what your week-long self-guided dolce vita getaway is all about. Connected by a 19th century railway line cutting through the hillsides, the villages are car-free, surrounded by some 75 miles of trails along the coast line, with 48 hiking trails available. Explore them at your own pace and enjoy the views. And don’t forget, your phone can only hold so many photos!
Explore villages, hillside vineyards, olive groves, enjoy delicious Italian cuisine
Great combination of seaside hikes, woodland paths, and trails along rugged cliffs
Unsurprisingly, Cinque Terre National Park is the UNESCO World Heritage Site
For a beautiful Italian getaway, Cinque Terre is the perfect choice. By going on this 7-day hiking adventure, you’ll get the chance to explore one of the most spectacular spots in Italy at your own pace! Cinque Terre comprises five charming fisherman villages, with terrific connecting trails and hiking opportunities. You’ll have enough time to visit what you’re interested in, though your guiding company will provide you with a route, they’ll arrange accommodation, and be there for assistance by phone should you need it. An Italian summer under the Mediterranean sun awaits!
Arrive in Camogli on the Portofino peninsula and check into your hotel for the night. This will be your first glimpse into typical coastal Italian towns! Enjoy the fresh air, the salty breeze, and colorful fisherman houses. Wander the beautiful streets and discover the ruins of Castello della Dragonara. If the weather is warm enough, don’t miss out on swimming in the Ligurian Sea!
Accommodation : Private room in Camogli
From Camogli, transfer on your own to San Rocco (about €30—but you can also hike this section, it’s 1.7 km long (1 mile). From there, start hiking towards San Fruttuoso. You will pass by the picturesque church of San Rocco, walk along a quiet forest path, and then start hiking down to the beautiful San Fruttuoso abbey. This little gem is well-hidden and overlooks the Mediterranean Sea—and is only accessible by foot or boat.
After a delicious Italian lunch, hop on a boat to Portofino. It’s warmly recommended that you hike to your picnic lunch spot to enjoy scenic views. From there, keep walking through the Mediterranean flora until you reach Portofino. Visit this lovely town, enjoy a refreshing gelato, see the Castello Brown or artisan shops. Go back to Camogli by train and spend one more night there.
Accommodation : Private room in Camogli Meals : Breakfast Hiking : 11.5 km / 7 miles Elevation : +670 m / +2,200 ft | -890 m / -2,920 ft
Following a nice breakfast, catch a train to your next destination: Monterosso. Welcome to the Cinque Terre National Park! Located between the azure sea and the vineyards, Monterosso is well known for its crystal clear waters, beautiful reefs, medieval streets, and fragrant lemon trees.
After dropping off your luggage at your accommodation in Monterosso, hike to Vernazza via a coastal path along the hills. Panoramic views are guaranteed! Hike your way back to Monterosso or catch a train.
Accommodation : Private room in Monterosso Meals : Breakfast Hiking : 7 km / 4.3 miles Elevation : +270 m / +885 ft | -260 m / -855 ft

You can hike to those place most of the time and enjoy a lovely train ride back. Food and wine lovers will also find their happiness here—maybe take a pesto course or a guided tour in the vineyards.
Accommodation : Private room in Monterosso Meals : Breakfast
Today you’ll leave Monterosso and head to Riomaggiore by train. From there, you’ll start hiking to Portovenere by following the edge of the hill and a coastline trail, walk through Colle del Telegrafo, and the village of Campiglia.
Here is where you’ll find remarkable cliffs of Portovenere and the lovely fisherman village! After check-in, have a stroll through the historic center, the picturesque harbor, and the Church of San Pietro, lcoated on a rocky edge.

This is the end of your Italian trip! After breakfast, pack up and leave your accommodation. Your guiding company recommends taking a cab to La Spezia, or even staying in Italy and do further travel on your own. If not, you can go directly to the airport!
Meals : Breakfast
A self-guided tour implies that the route you choose and the choices you make are your own responsibility. The itinerary, distances, and elevations may vary slightly due to numerous reasons including weather and terrain conditions. Your guiding company will provide you with a road map.
Keep in mind that you’ll be the one organizing your transfers between the towns. However, the trains in Italy are superb! Though you can also hike some sections instead of taking the train, towns a bit further away are very easily reachable by trains. Tickets can usually be purchased both online or at the train station. Your train rides will be a lovely addition to your trip—they are comfortable and they go along the Italian riviera!

Today we represent the second of the five virtual tours of wonderful place of Italy — Cinque Terre. During this week we will publish a new tour every day. On Friday 27th of March all 5 towns of "Five Lands" will be available on our website.
Here are few facts about Cinque Terre:
A dozen kilometers of rocky coastline and half a dozen of settlements — either towns or hamlets. So why do tourists from all over the world come there? Let's clear it up.
Would you like to find yourself in a place where little multicoloured houses climb the steep rocks, slopes are covered with vineyards and underneath there are emerald-green sea waves? Where there are no cars, but many boats? Where you can ramble through narrow streets for a long time? So there is such a place as Natural Reserve of the Cinque Terre (Five Lands) that is situated on the Ligurian shore in Italy.
Five Lands refer to five tiny towns: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare. Each of them has its own recognisable appearance and doesn't look like each other.
The Cinque Terre has been under the protection of UNESCO since 1997. Here one can find piled up boats instead of parked cars we got used to. The sea that washes the Ligurian shore is considered to be one the purest in the Mediterranean. The natural reserve has been existing for more than ten years. During this time local marine life has regenerated, so the natural reserve has become attractive not only to common holiday makers, but also to divers.
You can get the Cinque Terre by water (using either boat or small ship) or by rail. In case you go there by train, which goes almost all the way through the tunnel, you will have a feeling you are on the subway. The train goes out only near the stations, so that not to spoil the beauties of the landscape.
Riomaggiore, the largest of the five towns, was founded in the beginning of the 13th century. Its population is about 1700 people. It is where the famous Love Walk (Via Dell'Amore) begins (or ends, depending on where are you going or coming from), but I shall tell about it a bit later. Riomaggiore is also famous for its wine. Well, actually, it can be said about all the five towns.
Several trekking routes are created to connect the towns. The distances are not long, but if you finally decide to follow these routes you should be prepared to hike mountain paths which require more time than simple smooth roads. To warm-up you can try Via Dell'Amore, the Love Walk which connects Riomaggiore and Manarola. This town has the population of 450 people and has preserved medieval fortifications which protected citizens from pirates.
Here is one of the legends that can be heard about this place. A long time ago young fellows from Manarola used to come to the river near Riomaggiore to get water. As in any common ancient legend, the residents of these towns were hostile to each other. One of the fellows met a beautiful young girl from Riomaggiore, so they, having fallen in love with each other, started to date secretly. Brothers of the girl found out about it and locked her in the house. She managed to get out and went to her beloved. But their rendezvous ended tragically: both of them slipped and fell into the sea. Since then residents of both towns have lived in peace, and the path has got its name — Via Dell'Amore. The 2011 flood significantly damaged the Cinque Terre, but by now everything has been completely restored. Unfortunately, landslides and rockfalls sometimes result in closing the road.
If you happen to visit Manarola, follow Via Dell'Amore and recall this ancient legend. And if the evening takes you by surprise, it is better to spend it on a hill. You will be able to enjoy the splendid view which is ‘advertised' on post-cards. Furthermore, there is one more curious thing in Manarola — the elevator for boats. To carry a boat from a stony bay it should be hanged on a block and lifted upwards, then placed on the square.
Corniglia is the smallest of the five towns (only 245 residents) and the one which has no access to the sea as it is situated on a hill. To get there you have to climb a high staircase (probably it is the reason why there are fewer tourists). But if you finally conquer the steep slope you will be awarded with magnificent panoramic view; and the stroll along narrow streets will bring you pleasure even on a hot day. Corniglia is famous not only for its vineyards, but for the way the harvest is delivered. It is impossible to carry it by car as the slopes are too steep, so grapes are delivered by a single-rail device that resembles a bike riding on a roller coaster.
Vernazza is a pearl of the Cinque Terre, the most splendid of all five towns. The beautiful church of Margaret of Antioch dated the beginning of the 14th century is standing near the Belforte Tower and the ruins of the castle that was created in the 9th century. On the square facing the bay there are many Italian cuisine restaurants. The population of Vernazza is slightly more than 1000 people.
And finally, Monterosso al Mare. This town has the population of 1563 residents and differs from other fellow-towns by the sandy beach, which attracts a lot of tourists. If you change your way, in 600 meters you will find yourself in the old town. There are also a remote beach and a trekking route to Vernazza.
During one of my previous journeys I managed to pass it all the way through. For me it was a pleasure, but my companions refused flatly to come over there again. However, even unprepared tourists can climb up the Cristoforo Hill to reach the monastery of Capuchin and an old castle built in the 16th century to protect the town from the Saracens.
If you are fond of romantic landscapes, hiking the mountains, sound of the sea and Italian cuisine, you definitely should go to the Cinque Terre. But you should note that on high season the number of amateurs of local beauties rises dramatically, so you should book a hotel in advance.
The easiest way to travel between all the five towns is by train which leaves from the station La Spezia. But you should bear in mind that the Italian sun and the breath of idleness in the air make the timetable rather unreliable, so trains can leave earlier or be late. For amateurs of trekking there are many routes of different difficulty. The longest one (40 kilometers) will take an experienced traveller at least 12 hours to complete. The shortest way between all the five towns can take you about 5 hours. But to be honest, I have never met a person who would visit all of them at once. You can't help stopping to drop in any of these cosy Italian restaurants, haste is absolutely inappropriate here.
There are no luxurious hotels and huge restaurants. It is the place with its own rules and laws. But the hospitality of people who paint their houses in bright colours, the magnificent nature of Liguria, and the sense of time travelling are the precious treasures of the Cinque Terre.

Did you always want to attend a travel and landscape photography workshop in a beautiful location, but never did, because you have a spouse or partner that isn’t that much into photography?
You might have searched the Web for tours that offer a discount for non-photographer partners, but there aren’t many and the discounts aren’t very appealing.
Worst of all, most photo tours and workshops aren’t designed to cater also to the needs of non-photographers. While you and the other photographers are out in the field, waiting for the best light to illuminate an iconic scene, your partner is left to himself or herself, bored in a hotel room, reading a book, watching TV or having to find something exciting to do on her or his own.
If this is your situation and the prospect of it has always stopped you from booking the photography workshop of your dreams, you have come to the right place!
While the photographers are out shooting the things that only a photographer can appreciate, their partners will have the opportunity to take part in other kinds of activities that have been planned specifically for them: museum visits, shopping, wine and food tastings, boat tours, and more.
Depending on the location, there will of course be times when we are all together. A beautiful sunset from a terrace overlooking the Portofino harbour is something that can be appreciated by anyone, whether they are holding a camera or a glass of Prosecco in their hand.
“Honey, can you take a picture of me?”
Let’s face it. Landscape photography skills are one thing. Portraits are in a completely different ballpark. We’ve all seen competent landscape photographers struggle to get a decent portrait of their partner, spouse or best friend and they will generally claim they have no time for it.
The end result is that the vacation album contains many beautiful sunset photographs and one or two snapshots of the significant other, usually in bad light and with the eyes squinting under the bright midday sun. It will also contain not even a single photo of the couple together, unless they hand the camera to a random passerby, with predictable results.
To end this pain once and for all, we have decided to include in this tour a dedicated portrait session. We will show you how to make the most of available or artificial light to create flattering portraits of your partner that you will cherish forever. You will also have the chance to have portraits of you together taken by one of your instructors or by other members of the group. No more cellphone selfies with arm extended!
Traveling alone?
While this program is designed for couples, it doesn’t mean singles can’t join. Depending on availability, we will be glad to have you on board. Contact us for prices and for all information .
Cinque Terre And The Italian Riviera, October 22-26, 2021
By attending this workshop, you will be able to experience the most beautiful locations on the stretch of coast that goes from Genoa to the Gulf of La Spezia: Genoa, Camogli, Portofino, Cinque Terre, Portovenere, Tellaro. Traditional villages filled with color and atmosphere, beaches, high cliffs, and Mediterranean vegetation.
To accommodate the needs of local and international guests, the workshop will be bi-lingual. Thanks to the one-on-one nature of our teaching, we will be able to offer you instructions in English or Italian, according to your preference.

- Photography instruction in a small group setting by professional photographers.
- Evening processing and critique sessions.
- Transportation in a private minivan with driver. In the Cinque Terre we will use trains also, as it is a much faster and convenient means of transportation, due to the nature of the area.
- 4 dinners in typical Italian restaurants, including drinks.

The cost of the whole workshop is 4,400€ (or USD 4,900) per couple (inclusive of VAT). A couple is defined as two people traveling together, no matter whether they are two spouses, fiancées, one parent and one child or just best friends.
“EARLY BIRD” Discount
All the bookings confirmed before midnight, July 31st, 2021 will enjoy a 15% discount over the price of the tour. In this case, the price will be only 3,740€ (or 4,200 USD) per couple.
(This promotional offer cannot be cumulated with any other offer.)
Workshop Program
We will meet in Genoa at around 10AM and will start the day with a walk through this beautiful city that combines the medieval and the modern in a very compact historical center, dominated by its majestic gothic cathedral.
After a quick lunch and some rest, the photographers in the group will keep exploring the lesser known corners of Genoa, including what was once a fishermen’s village and has maintained all its character, though it is now engulfed in the city, Boccadasse.
Boccadasse, Genoa
Meanwhile, the non-photographers in the group will have the opportunity to visit the Aquarium of Genoa, the largest in Italy and one of the largest in Europe. We will end the day with a dinner in a traditional restaurant. Overnight in hotel in Genoa.
On the morning of the second day, right after breakfast we head to Camogli, one of the most stunning towns in the whole coast, with its colorful houses on the beach. All the activities of this day will take place at a leisurely pace and with the whole group.
In the afternoon we will reach the elegant Portofino, with its luxury yachts and the patrician villas. From there, we will move to the harbor of San Fruttuoso and its medieval abbey. San Fruttuoso can be reached by boat, using public transport, while the more adventurous will want to take the easy, one-and-a-half-hour hike through the Natural Park, which offers exceptional views.
We will then have dinner in a nice restaurant in the area and finish the day at our hotel, possibly having a look at and discussing the images taken during the day.
On the third day, we start our exploration of Cinque Terre, starting at Monterosso. While the photographers are busy exploring the village, the rest of the group will be able to do some shopping or, if the weather is fine, just relax on the beach.
From Monterosso we board a private boat for a tour along the coast, affording us view views of the Cinque Terre that are not accessible from land. Of course, we will give you tips on how best to take photographs from a moving boat. There will be lunch and drinks on board and, weather permitting, the option to take a swim (but remember that water can be quite chilly at this time of the year).
We will finish the day in Vernazza. As sunset approaches, we will move to one of the viewpoints above the town, waiting for the best light. Before dinner there will also be the possibility to take some blue hour photographs from another spot, while the non-photographers might elect to have an aperitivo  instead.
On the morning of the fourth day, we will do a hike on the trail between Corniglia and Vernazza. This will allow us to get great views of the area from on high. For lunch, you will be treated to a tasting of the best wines from the region, accompanied by local products, on a terrace overlooking the sea. After that, we explore the remaining villages, Riomaggiore and Manarola, walking between the two on the famous Via dell’Amore .
Riomaggiore
We will end the day catching the sunset in Tellaro, have dinner and then move to our hotel in Portovenere.
On the morning of the fifth day, we rise early to shoot the sunrise in Portovenere. After breakfast, we will do a session of image processing and critique and finally send everyone on their way home after lunch.
Portovenere
This program is subject to variations, depending on weather conditions.

We had an unforgettable weekend with Ugo in Cinque Terre. He took us around the 5 villages and showed us the good vantage points for photography and gave us very useful tips. I went home with beautiful photos. Highly recommended.
I contacted Ugo for a private two day tour of Cinque Terre. He immediately responded and we met up in Monterosso. Ugo is an easy going and likeable guy and, as can be seen in his website, a good photographer. He knows Cinque Terre very well since he lives nearby and has conducted several tours in the area. If you have only a few days in Cinque Terre, it makes great sense to contact Ugo and he can take you right away to the good spots and at the right time of the day. I had a great time with Ugo in Cinque Terre and would recommend taking his tours.
My husband and I did a workshop with Ugo in Cinque Terre. It was fantastic. Ugo is not only a great photographer, but he is generous with his knowledge, and he offers a great workshop. The group was international, which made the experience even richer.
After two photo tours with Ugo in Italy, I cannot recommend the experience highly enough – the local knowledge of Italy, partnered with photographic expertise and guidance made for an extremely rewarding photo tour! Ugo guides and mentors you according to your skills, regardless of whether you are a beginner or experienced enthusiast. I have come away with greater understanding of the craft and confidence to build my skill set. I am inspired to continue my learning journey to create beautiful images. Thank you Ugo!!!
If you are planning to travel and love photography at any level Ugo can plan a personal tour to fit in with your itinerary! He has a wealth of knowledge to share with you on any subject of photography. Apart from photography (my passion) Ugo provides a total travel experience looking at Italy through the eyes of a local. A life changing trip leaving me totally hooked to book another! Thank you Ugo and yes I will be returning my dilemma is choosing a destination.
