Porto Stadium Tour: Your Essential Guide to the Dragon Stadium

Porto Stadium or Estádio do Dragão ,  translated as ‘The Dragon Stadium’ is an architectural landmark in Porto and the home stadium of renowned football club FC Porto.

If you’re visiting Porto then make sure to add a Porto Stadium Tour to your itinerary. You might be asking “Why is it called The Dragon Stadium?”

Well, long before Game of Thrones brought dragons back, the dragon symbolized the strength and vitality of FC Porto.

Aptly, the dragon also features in both the FC Porto logo and the city’s own coat of arms!

Estádio do Dragão

The current stadium was built to replaced the previous stadium, the Estádio das Antas in 2003. With capacity seating of just over 50,000 people, it’s impressive scale also makes it the third largest football stadium in Portugal – just behind Benfica Stadium and Sporting Stadium.

Most recently, it will also host the upcoming 2019 UEFA Nations League Final and 2020 UEFA Super Cup .

Port wine, one of Portugal’s most famous exports, is named after Porto, since the metropolitan area, and in particular, the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, were responsible for the packaging, transport, and export of fortified wine. In 2014 and 2017, Porto was elected The Best European Destination by the Best European Destinations Agency. Porto is on the Portuguese Way path of the Camino de Santiago. Many renowned Portuguese music artists and cult bands such as GNR, Rui Veloso, Sérgio Godinho, Clã, Pluto, Azeitonas and Ornatos Violeta are from the city or its metropolitan area. Porto has several museums, concert halls, theaters, cinemas, art galleries, libraries, and bookshops. The best-known museums of Porto are the National Museum Soares dos Reis (Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis), which is dedicated especially to the Portuguese artistic movements from the 16th to the 20th century, and the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Serralves Foundation (Museu de Arte Contemporânea).

The city has got a decent streaks of best clubs, bars and restaurants which serve best and exotic items to deliver the ultimate premium experience of the nightlife, which we are going to discuss in this article.

The Nightlife in Porto

Rich history, nice location on the seashore and the Douro River estuary, Port wine and fun nightlife – this is Porto! With more than 287,000 inhabitants it is the second largest city in Portugal but still pleasant and attractive with semi-Mediterranean climate and medieval as well as modern living side by side. What to do in Porto on a Budget? Here you go – here we have come up with some of the best and finest locations/activities that could be enjoyed in the nightlife, available in the city so you don’t find yourself in the hassle of looking for:

Piolho at night

club tour porto

Do not leave Porto without going out! Porto has a busy, super fun nightlife that you should not miss. Start your night at Piolho, a square next to the building of the University of Porto. Piolho has many small bars with cheap drinks, and it gets very crowded at night. Rua da Galeria de Paris with lots of clubs with different types of music is your ideal next stop. It is just stepping away from Piolho and many clubs have no entrance fees.

Experience Porto nightlife

club tour porto

You don’t have to go far from the city center to find the hottest places for a night out on the town. The streets near the Clérigos Church are virtually empty during the day but they bustle with people, good food and music from late afternoon till the early hours of the morning. There are cafés, restaurants, bars, and clubs aplenty, with locals and visitors alike streaming in and out of their doors.

Ribeira and the Luís I Bridge

club tour porto

The riverfront district of Ribeira was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. An absolute must-see! The area has a very unique character and nice atmosphere. The buildings are old and worn but very charming. If you are in Porto on Monday, you should go to Ribeira at night. There is not much going on other days, but Mondays are different. A couple of bars have special offers, so lots of people come to grab a drink and enjoy it outside with all the pretty lights.

Port wine tasting

club tour porto

What is Porto most famous for? Port wine of course! There are many cellars that offer guided tours and wine tasting, some do it for free. You definitely have to try! Taylor’s offers very detailed tours through their cellar explaining how Port wine is made. You also get a glass of white and red Port for free; enjoy it on their terrace with an amazing view of Ribeira. Croft is another cellar that offers free tours and wine samples too, they even have pink Port. In a general opinion – Taylor’s has better tours and a nicer venue, but Croft has nicer wine. Recommended to try both and making your own opinion.

Climb up Torre dos Clérigos

club tour porto

The Torre dos Clérigos (Clérigos Tower) is the most iconic feature of Porto’s skyline and provides fantastic views of the city. The tower is part of Clérigos Church, a Baroque building from the eighteenth century, located at one of the highest points of the town. After hiking 75 meters up 240 narrow steps, you are rewarded with a spread of tall orange roofs fighting for space all the way down to the river. Schedule your visit for a mid-to-late afternoon: the sunset light on the rooftops is really unforgettable.

Look inside the Church of São Francisco

club tour porto

Next door to Bolsa Palace lies one of the more spiritual and significantly older Porto attractions – the Church of São Francisco. Built in the Gothic style in the 12 and 1300s, Baroque-style interior details were added later, giving the inside a sumptuous, golden glow that has to be seen to be believed.

Best Bars in Porto

Porto is simply perfect for a party weekend: it is affordable, it has great food, lively nightlife and the weather is amazing compared to other European countries. At first glance, Porto’s appeal may be in its old-school character, but interspersed between the city’s timeworn buildings is a scattering of hip and happening bars. These watering holes serve everything from Porto’s namesake drinks, port, to specialty beer and cocktails, and makes the ideal spot to chill after a day on the town. Hence, in order to kill your drink desire, we have gathered a list of Porto City’s best bars which are absolutely good enough to satisfy your drinking needs:

Casa do Livro

club tour porto

Casa do Livro is definitely one of the best bars in Porto. Its name – casa do livro means the book house – relates to the fact that it used to be a bookshop. Some of the books are still there, giving this bar an intellectual atmosphere as if it’s taking you back to some old movie of Sherlock Holmes. The music is chosen with attention and with good taste, usually more into jazz or blues, but also passing through others styles. It is a place you should not miss if you want to start the night with a good digestive drink, together with a fabulous environment which will put you in a good mood for a lot of hours.

HD Bar to be Wild

club tour porto

This relatively new bar in Porto, mostly known as “Harley Davidson” is quite a sensation in Porto. The name says it all, but you will be surprised when you get inside and see the space organization and their decor. Harley Davidson has a beautiful mezzanine, offering quite a comfy and different environment. This is one of the best bars in Porto for smaller groups, as it is quite hard to get a lot of chairs or tables free…

Champanheria da Baixa

club tour porto

For all champagne lovers out there: in Porto, there is a bar dedicated specially for you! They opened its door in 2012 to quickly win hearts over with its carefully selected list of champagnes. It has a sophisticated atmosphere on the inside, but it also has some tables on the outside too, perfect for you to enjoy your champagne during hot summer days. Everyone is welcome as there is no perfect age to enjoy champagne, as Champanheria da Baixa has been teaching during the past years. This is definitely one of the best bars in Porto!

The Gin House

club tour porto

If you are looking for the best bars in Porto dedicated to gin, look no further! The Gin House offers hundreds of types of gins and the staff will mix one of the best cocktails gins you have ever had. Inside, there are leather couches where you can sit down, have a gin and listen to electronic music. There are also outdoor seats available which are perfect for summer nights. Just be aware that, this bar is mainly for drinks as the only foods available are small appetizers like fried corn, nuts, cheese, smoked meats, and bread.

Big Bad Bank Bar

club tour porto

At the Zero Box Lodge hotel, you will experience another best bar of Porto and the most unique one too. The Big Bad Bank Bar has a cool environment, nothing like any bar we have seen in the city before.

There are fake money notes everywhere because this place used to be safe! That’s where the name Big Bad Bank Bar came from – what a genius idea. . . . The cocktails have funny names like The Perfect Heist, Reward, GO Big or Go Home and so on. If you are looking for a good time and good drinks, check out the Big Bad Bank Bar.

Best Bar Restaurant in Porto

Porto’s dining scene revolves mainly around fresh sea produce and succulent local meats, with regional delicacies such as francesinhas and bacalhau, the local salted cod, taking center stage. Therefore, to fulfill your extreme craving for delightful food and awesome booze, we have gathered details of few Porto City’s best bar restaurants from traditional family-run Portuguese restaurants to fine-dining establishments and riverside venues :

The Yeatman

club tour porto

Situated within a luxury wine hotel and spa on a hill overlooking Porto, this two Michelin star restaurant is celebrated for its views over the Douro River and historic center of town, as well as for showcasing the best of Porto’s food. The imaginative cuisine combines the traditional flavors of Portuguese food across the nation’s distinct regions, with contemporary cooking techniques and presentation. Diners can choose between the restaurant’s three tasting menus which are designed to take you on a journey through Portugal’s diverse wine regions.

Euskalduna Studio

club tour porto

There are plenty of good restaurants in Porto, but as far as experiential restaurants go, Euskalduna Studio is one of its kinds. Euskalduna Studio showcases experimental dishes that play with flavor and texture to provide a unique gastronomic experience. Unlike most conventional restaurants, the kitchen is open for diners to interact with the kitchen team, ensuring each person’s dining experience is personalized. Inspiration for new dishes is taken from around the world, but the product is most often local, seasonal and from small producers.

club tour porto

Galerias de Paris is one of the best Bar Restaurants in Porto. The environment is so variable that it always gives a surprise what you will find there. To begin with, it has amazing breakfasts, perfect to start the day at such an emblematic neighborhood of Porto. Then, at lunchtime, you can find some delicious menus. When the night arrives, Galerias de Paris turns into a dance floor where people from all ages share the vibe of music from the ’80s all night long. If you want to dance like a pro, there are some gatherings on the top floor for dancing lessons such as tango, lindy-hop, salsa or World dances.

Restaurante Cafeina

club tour porto

Within arm’s reach of the mouth of the Douro River, Restaurante Caffeine is a popular spot with local artists and Porto’s hip young crowd. The Portuguese food here is influenced by Italian and French cuisines, with a menu that changes on a regular basis, but usually revolves around succulent cuts of meat and fresh fish. The smooth & shiny interior is dominated by muted colors, accompanied by a light breeze coming in from the sea when the windows are open in summer.

club tour porto

Named after the salted cod specialty that is fundamental to Portuguese cuisine, it’s unsurprising that Bacalhau the restaurant has a great variety of dishes centered on it. Try the cod accompanied by dried fruits or cod served with spinach and chestnuts for a taste of Portugal with a twist. The restaurant’s peaceful location next to the Douro River and reliably friendly staff really add to the experience too.

Grelhador da Boavista

club tour porto

As is to be expected from a ‘grill’ restaurant, the menu is dominated by the flavors of the flame, applied to fish and succulent cuts of meat alike. It is indeed a popular destination for locals & foreigners at lunchtime, the Grelhador da Boavista greets visitors with a glass display case of the day’s freshest raw offerings so that you can choose how they are cooked to your own idea of perfection by the restaurant’s skilled chefs.

Best Nightclub in Porto

As the second largest city in the country, throughout the decades there have been some hot stops for partying or just socializing at night but nothing like what’s going on nowadays. As the city is relatively small and compact, the nightlife is largely concentrated in the ‘Downtown’ area (known locally as ‘Baixa’), making it easy to sample a few different venues in one outing. Crossing Porto’s downtown at night, especially during the weekend, can be crazy. Many of Porto’s nightlife establishments can be found inside historical buildings that have been re-imagined into a mix of modern, trendy, and cozy spaces.

Bars and nightclubs with high ceilings, tall windows, and wooden floors are common, providing an appealing atmosphere that is majestic, yet charming. You can enjoy the following options to experience an unforgettable tour with the true experience of Porto City’s culture:

RUA Tapas & Music Bar

club tour porto

Rua is on our top list of favorite places to dance, so we had to include it here as it’s one of the best bars in Porto. Nothing beats the feeling of listening to talented artists playing live music in one of the most important neighborhoods in Porto. They play music with different genres, but recently it’s more samba rock. This is a very small and intimate bar where the focus is on music and good times. Don’t be surprised if the party gets taken outside, bring a friend, order a beer and dance all the night away at Rua.

club tour porto

One of the best gay bars in Porto is Zoom, which welcomes everyone regardless of their sexual orientation. They have a lot of themed parties with go-go boy dancers and dance music (pop, house, etc ). Some people may think this bar is “over the top”, but they are just unapologetically wild and free. So don’t be surprised if things get a little promiscuous in the late hours. If you are looking for a night full of immense fun, don’t hesitate to head out to Zoom for some drinks and lots of dancing. Indeed, Zoom knows how to throw a party.

Hot Five Jazz and Blues

club tour porto

Hot Five is Port’s best and oldest live music club which hosts the best jazz, soul, and tribute band music in the city. Professional cocktail artists provide a unique and personalized drink service experience. There’s even a specialty dish: the Club Sandwich, a perfect snack to have while you enjoy the show. This is the perfect option for big groups who are celebrating a birthday party, hen party, stag party, or any other special occasion.

Industrias Club

club tour porto

Open weekends from midnight to 6 am. Industrias Club is one of Porto’s oldest clubs, spinning electronic music’s hottest tracks for 27 years now! Well-known international EDM DJs have graced the Industrias Club stage. What makes it stand out? It’s catered to the needs of the DJs and their devoted crowds complete with an impeccable sound system, an incredible dance floor, and a lounge area where partygoers can relax and recharge.

Tendinha Dos Clerigos

club tour porto

Are you more of a rocker? Then Tendinha dos Clérigos is the place for you. The underground punk and rock scene found here to provide one of the most authentic rock experiences in Porto’s nightlife. Tendinha dos Clérigos has a unique feel to it, with its top-notch DJs and its woody aesthetic.

club tour porto

Get ready to experience “flower power” in a way you have never imagined. This nightclub is made up of three different spaces that are all unique in their own way. The first floor is designed as a cocktail party where guests are encouraged to mingle and prepare for the party that follows. The next two levels are the party rooms where guests can enjoy the best live bands and electronic music. Plus, Pitch Club hosts birthday parties and other celebrations.

Let us conclude the topic here, as we had a brief introduction of Porto City along with touching some of its prominent norms, culture, and nightlife. We also went through different activities and places to enjoy the nightlife of the City, Musical venues, Bars, Restaurants and Nightclubs as well. Such activities provide a great source of entertainment for tourists and locals. Moreover, such activities also help in understanding the true cultural norms of a city.

As already elaborated the city is relatively small and dense, the nightlife is largely concentrated in the ‘Downtown’ area where city’s best bars are located and satisfying the desire of thirsty visitors where you can enjoy your drink with the mesmerizing architectural beauty of the hand-crafted bars and their decors in the old town of the city.

You don’t feel any hunger during your trip that is why we also suggested some of the finest restaurants in the city that offer exotic and delicious food along with your favorite drinks. You can really enjoy the taste of good food along with some great booze.

And lastly, we went through comprehensive options of Nightclubs that offered great music with some delightfully exotic choices for drinks and cocktail that will polish your overall experience at Porto City.

All of the aforementioned experiences will work together to make your trip more memorable. A perfect and balanced blend of the above-identified activities can really boost your experience and make your trip unbelievably unforgettable for you.

The best clubs in Porto

Plano B

1.  Plano B

  • Late-night bars

Located in another of Porto’s major nightspots, the Rua Cândido dos Reis, Plano B is a city landmark for locals and tourists alike – and the kind of club that makes for great Instagramming. There’s three main rooms and several smaller spaces, each with its own distinct vibe, and there’s even a fountain statue on the ground floor. As for music, hop from pop in the ‘stage’ room to EDM in the ‘cube’ room.

Maus Hábitos

2.  Maus Hábitos

  • Contemporary art
  • Santa Catarina

One of the city’s finest bars. It hosts a monthly program including parties we vividly recommend (Hard Ass Sessions, GrooveBall, Arena, CandyWaves), plus gigs by both Portuguese and foreign bands, film screenings, tango nights and art shows by local independent artists. There’s also a pizzeria named Vícios da Mesa, serving lunch, dinner and brunch (Sundays only, noon to 4pm). And it’s just across from another bar, the Passos Manuel – so try both of them.

Indústria

3.  Indústria

At this mythical club in Foz, the motto is to dance until dawn (and relax on the beach right after). Indústria ’s lineup features a regular schedule of DJs and producers making waves internationally. Techno and house are the main genres, and you can experience them on one of the best sound systems in the country.

Pérola Negra

4.  Pérola Negra

The legendary Pérola Negra sex club has reopened as a nightclub. They've kept the name and decor, and the early evening music has a nostalgic vibe, but as the night progresses and a younger crowd arrives, the tunes shift to house and disco, spanning both yesterday and today.

Gare

5.  Gare

This venue has one of the best agendas in the city, and as a result, one of the busiest dancefloors, going on into the early hours. Jeff Mills, Ben Klock, Nina Kraviz and Helena Hauff are just some of the names that have played there.

Passos Manuel

6.  Passos Manuel

  • Bars and pubs

One of Porto’s most iconic bars, Passos Manuel is found in an old movie theatre. Most of the regulars are connected to the city’s cultural industry, and the bar has a queer-friendly environment. Passos Manuel is a place both for quiet evenings of chatting with friends in the upper floor or in private rooms (those tiny rooms hidden behind the counter) and for going wild on the downstairs dance floor.

Tendinha dos Clérigos

7.  Tendinha dos Clérigos

Tendinha is among Porto’s legendary discos – it’s where a lot of people end up when they’re trying to extend their night all the way till dawn (don’t be surprised if you bump into tipsy folks along the way). It’s powered by danceable rock music. If you get there before the wee hours, you can also try HD Bar To Be Wild, a nearby biker bar at the Rua Galeria de Paris managed by the same owners as the Tendinha.

Café au Lait

8.  Café au Lait

The Rua Galeria de Paris has many bars and a lot of people. If you’re bemused by all the possibilities, go to Café au Lait. Their music is selected by good DJs, some of them talented young Portuguese producers. You might get there in the middle of an EDM, hip hop or funk party, and if the dancefloor is swinging, it might end up being your night’s only port of call.

Fé Wine & Club

9.  Fé Wine & Club

Fé Wine & Club is a place with walls lined with books, where you can enjoy a glass of wine at the end of the day, chat with your pals, or dance into the wee hours of the morning.

Walk Around the Crystal Palace Gardens

Porto is a green city with some beautiful parks that are open to the public. One of the most impressive greenspaces is the Palácio de Cristal, or the Crystal Palace Gardens . This area is clean and well maintained with several paths for you to explore.

The park has winding trails going around perfect flowerbeds and fountains making it the perfect spot for a romantic walk with your partner or just a fun activity with a few friends. We recommend coming here for a late evening stroll after a dinner date in one of the local restaurants.

Visit the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art

The Serralves Foundation in Porto has a whole array of attractions set up in Serralves Park. This is one of the favorite attractions for everyone who has visited Porto. There is a romantic museum displaying artworks and architecture as well as a beautiful greenspace that you can walk through after visiting the exhibits.

While you are here make sure to try out the amazing Treetop Walk which will take you on wooden pathways that run through the trees. The paths are safe and lit up making it a magical experience during the nighttime.

See the Porto Cathedral

Locally, this building is known as the Sé do Porto Catedral and is one of the best known and oldest landmarks still standing in Porto. It was built on the highest point of the city so once you make it here you can enjoy some views of the buildings lit up at night.

This church is not only beautiful but historic as well. In fact, one of the building's columns was used to hang criminals centuries ago! The inside of the chapel is also stunning and follows several styles, predominately the Baroque style. Incredible azulejo tiles line the walls and tell the story of Porto.

Stop by the Casa do Livro

The Casa do Livro translates to book house and there is no name that better suits this place. It is actually a local bar that used to be a functioning bookshop but has now been transformed into a sort of combination of the two.

The bar, which still has books lining its walls, has a truly charismatic atmosphere and personality that make it a top Porto attraction for anyone who gets to stop by. The good music and great drinks make it a favorite location for visitors and locals alike.

Visit the Luis I Bridge by Ribeira

Just across the Douro River is a town called Ribeira which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can explore this part of the city during the day but it is even better to stop by at night, especially on Mondays since that is when this neighborhood tends to come alive.

Ribeira has a charming character and atmosphere with historic buildings and on Monday nights many of the local bars offer promotions, so that is a popular time for people to stop by and grab a drink. To get here you can cross the Luis I Bridge, which is also a nice spot to walk across and see amazing views of Porto from across the River Douro.

Attend a Concert at Casa da Música

This concert hall was created after Porto was named as a European Capital of Culture. It is now where lots of concerts, programs and cultural events are held. There is also a restaurant, cafe and two bars on site so you can get yourself a bite to eat or a drink before the performance.

There is an impressive selection of shows put on here so you should check their schedule to see what is happening while you are in town. The Casa da Música is ready to entertain you with live music and performances all evening!

Climb the Clerigos Tower

Torre dos Clérigos, also known as Clerigos Tower, is one of the most iconic buildings in the city. Attached to the tower is Clerigos Church which was built centuries ago and offers free entry. The tower is made with over 200 steps and if you are up for it, you can buy a ticket to climb to the top.

Once you reach the top you will be rewarded with an incredible 360 degree view of the city below you. It is one of the city's highest points and the best place for taking photos and seeing the city from above. The best time to book is in the evening right before the sun sets, making it a great nighttime activity in Porto.

Go to Some Porto Bars

There are several things that make Porto the perfect place for partying, which include affordable and delicious food, great drinks, friendly locals, and an active nightlife. If you are looking for something to do at night you can have so much fun drinking at some of the local bars.

You should head to a local wine bar, nightclub or bistro, or visit several of them in the same night. Some are within walking distance from one another making bar hopping a real possibility. Try the different beers, wines and cocktails that the citizens of Porto love. A good place to start is at the popular Royal Cocktail Club.

Take Wine Tasting Tours in Porto

Of course, it would be a mistake to visit Porto without trying some of the port wines from Douro Valley or the Portuguese green wine called Vinho Verde. It won't take you long to find a local wine cellar that is willing to give you a tour and some even offer it for free if you want to save money.

You can learn a lot about the process of how the popular port wine is made, and you might even get to try samples too. Stopping by one of the wine bars with one or two friends after a day of sightseeing is the perfect way to spend a night in Porto.

Go Inside the Church of St Francis

If you find yourself near the Bolsa Palace then you won't be far from the Church of São Francisco. This spiritual building is one of Porto's oldest and dates back sometime between the 13th and 14th centuries. It follows a Gothic architectural style and is an impressive sight to see in person.

If you get the chance to step inside you will be even more amazed. The interior is detailed and follows a Baroque style which is incredible and ornate. The building looks even larger at night making it a magical experience once the sun goes down. If you feel brave enough you can take a trip into the museum and catacombs located beneath the church!

Step Inside the São Bento Train Station

If you were intrigued by the azulejo tiles at the Porto Cathedral mentioned above, then you will definitely want to make a stop by the São Bento Station . This place also has an impressive display of the stone tiles and they depict different tales of the battles and general life of the people in Porto.

If you are using public transportation to get around then chances are that you will be dropped off here at some point in your, vacation either during the day or at night. If you aren't using the train this place is still a highly recommended spot to visit.

Take a Guided Food Tour

There are several food-themed walking tours that you can take in Porto and each one will help introduce you to the different meals and best restaurants in the city. This is the perfect nighttime activity for any food connoisseur that wants to try the staple foods of Porto that can't be found in the grocery stores back home.

While you are on the tour you will be introduced to some of the traditional dishes, like the Pastéis de Nata or the popular Francesinha. The latter is made of bread, different meats like fresh sausage, fried egg, and a tasty beer sauce on top. If you would rather stop by one restaurant, Cafe Santiago is a great place to try this local dish and they also offer brunch if you want to visit the next morning for some fresh fruit and an omelet. Getting familiar with the different foods can give you a taste of what local life is like in Porto!

See Street Art in Vila Nova de Gaia

Vila Nova de Gaia is a part of the city found across the river. This area is unique since many of the buildings are decorated with impressive street art, making it a great spot to take an urban hike both during the day or at night.

It is also where most of the wine houses and cellars are located, making it an optimal spot for port tasting. We recommend taking a day trip here and ending your night in a bar to drink port wine. Rua das Flores in Ribeira is also a good spot to see street art if you ever find yourself in that part of town.

Go Shopping at Rua de Santa Catarina

This street is one of the best shopping areas in town and somewhere that is worth stopping by at any time of day or night. There are small shops and independent businesses scattered around the city streets, but if you want to get everything all in one place then this is where you should go.

Here you will find the Via Catarina Shopping Mall that has stores selling basically anything that you can think of. Come here to shop for popular brand names or just do some window shopping and grab a bite to eat at the food court for dinner.

Make Your Own Free Walking Tours at Night

This part of Northern Portugal is very interesting and beautiful, and one of the best things that you can do is just explore the city centre on your own. With stunning art galleries, intriguing museums, bars selling craft beer and pristine beaches, there are more than enough fun things to keep you busy all day and night.

You can easily plan your own free walking tour around different neighborhoods in the city. Downtown Porto can be a good spot to start since it is close to most of the Porto hotels and has lots going on. Some of your stops should include the Praça de Gomes Teixeira fountain and the Pérgola da Foz. If you are interested in sports make a stop by the FC Porto museum to learn about the city's own football team. You should end your tour at one of the beach bars where you can meet new friends!

Spending a Night in Porto

Porto is full of fun activities for you to enjoy both during the day and night. One of the best things about this city is the cuisine, so make sure to take part in one of the good food and wine tours so you can try the city's top dishes like Francesinha and Pastel de Nata. Visitors who want to just relax by the beach can head to Costa Nova or Matosinhos Beach where you can suntan in the sand or wade in the water. As for sightseeing, some of the top attractions include the Praça de Gomes Teixeira fountain and other ancient buildings like the Porto Cathedral.

Nightlife in Porto: 15 Best Bars & Clubs to Party the Night Away

If you’re not exploring the spirited nightlife of Porto, then you’re only experiencing half of what this great city has to offer. Porto truly comes alive at night and it promises to indulge all different kinds of people. From wine bistros, craft beer shops and cocktail bars, all the way to trendy nightclubs and retro hideways, there is a place for each and every visitor.

This is my ultimate lineup of the best bars and clubs in Porto that will ensure you’ll have the best time!

We’ll start the list with five locals’ favorite, before moving on to the five best clubs in Porto. We’ll end the list with five of the best bars and clubs in the prominent Galerias de Paris area, the undeniable nightlife hub of the city.

Table of Contents

1. Café Piolho

piolho bar

The Café Âncora d’Ouro (most commonly known as “ O Piolho “, or “louse” in English) is regarded as the meeting place for Porto’s university students. It opened in 1909, making it one of the oldest cafes in the city. Despite its humble size, Piolho is often crowded, especially at night.

Many believe the unique nickname of the cafe derives from the mix of crowds that met there (much like how lice arrive in packs to one’s head), This is thanks to its location near the science universities, making it a popular study spot. Pay special attention to the walls and you’ll find decades-old plaques gifted by students to the café – especially Med students.

Nowadays, it’s a good place to eat a francesinha and grab a nice pint when cementing the stomach for a drinking night. It’s also a great place to have a coffee and spend a chatty evening with friends.

2. Espaço 77

Espaço 77

Espaço 77, or just 77 , holds the record of most sold minis (250ml beer bottles) in Portugal for 8 years. It’s now aiming to surpass the million sold in a year milestone. There is even a sign on the wall which reads “we break records here”.

This family-run business owes its success to university students, especially exchange students who gather here for the low-priced drinks. A mini costs only 50 cents, so expect big thirsty crowds every night. Here, you’ll also find delicious and wallet-friendly snacks for when your stomach starts to growl in the late hours of the evening.

3. Adega Leonor

Adega leonor

You might pass it if you’re not paying attention. Adega Leonor is a small hole-in-the-wall establishment; it’s so small that customers usually consume drinks in the garden. While seating availability isn’t their forte, their prices are.

club tour porto

Adega Leonor is a popular spot for Erasmus (exchange) students who are eligible for special discounts. Foreign students love this place so much that many leave their student IDs here before returning to their home country. The owners have an entire wall covered with student and transport cards, donated by their clients!

base porto

If you’re someone who prefers an outdoor setting to enjoy a drink whilst feeling a cool breeze, then BASE is just the place for you. Located in the Clérigos urban garden, right next to Porto’s tallest landmark (Clérigos Tower), BASE stands out for its ambiance and quality of service.

BASE often promotes activities and events taking place in the afternoon and evenings. It’s the optimal spot for relaxing as the sun sets, or pre-gaming before heading to a more crowded pub or club in Porto.

5. Tapas Bar 24

Tapas Bar 24

I’m gonna let you in on my best-kept secret: Tapas Bar 24 . It’s a modest pub, stationed in a narrow street right at the back of the busy Piolho square. For years, it has been my mandatory stop before heading out to the club. Many partygoers even call it a night here because there’s no way the night could get better anywhere else.

But what makes it so endearing to myself and the ones who also visit regularly? Well, there are two key ingredients that sum it up: first, the owner provides a laptop with internet access so everyone can easily pick any song they’d like to listen to – a modern jukebox of sorts; second, the hydromel shots, a homemade concoction that may go down sweetly and smoothly but will surely get you beyond buzzed.

Tapas Bar 24 hydromel shots

If you visit before the peak hours, I’d advise you to taste some of Helder’s (the owner) fantastic tapas. Later on, when the modest bar becomes full with hydromel-craving folks, it becomes nearly impossible to get a bite.

boite nightclub

Where once people lined around the block to get tickets to see a movie at Olympia Cinema, decades later you may still see people queuing outside this emblematic building, now to get into Boîte .

It’s aptly named after the French word for “box”, which reflects their elementary motto: get in the box to step out of it . I actually had the chance to be there when it first opened and visited quite a few times after that, so I can guarantee that the standard and passion for what they do never disappoints.

Boîte is considered one of the trendiest clubs in Porto. Here, you can enjoy the latest as well as classics of Hip Hop, RnB and Funk mixed in what will surely make for an unforgettable night.

6. Boulevard

boulevard porto

There was once a time when it was impossible to even think about spending my Friday night any place other than Boulevard . I was such a frequent visitor that at some point I even started working for them! I haven’t visited much since the place was renovated in 2019, but I’ve heard that this is still the place where youngsters make the best memories and the silliest of mistakes.

Located right in the heart of the city, along Aliados Avenue, Boulevard is a hub for dancers and partiers of all ages. It has dedicated events on different nights, each attracting its own personalized sound and frequent clientele.

club tour porto

Eskada is an undeniable giant of the club scene in Porto. This is where my cousin first took me after I became an adult, and it’s where our uncles partied before us! Now, the club only opened in 2013 which, in retrospect, isn’t that long ago. But it prides itself on welcoming people of all ages, six out of seven nights a week.

This club in Porto is made out of connected smaller rooms, which with its own theme and purpose. It has a huge dancing floor and an outside area, usually only open during the summer to broaden the establishment’s capacity and allow people a much-needed breath of fresh air. It’s also known for being the stomping grounds of some domestic celebrities and the place where pretty girls gather on Saturday nights.

Make sure to show up early to avoid the long lines that tend to snake at around 1am, or instead show up a couple of hours later (but by then space might have reached full capacity – as it often does). Also, pay special attention to your outfit; it’s not unusual to get barred from entry when sporting sporty or casual attire.

9. Kasa da Praia

kasa da praia

Doubling as a restaurant during the day, Kasa da Praia (literally meaning “beach house”) becomes a prominent nightclub at night. As the name may foreshadow, this establishment is actually built on the Castelo do Queijo beach, away from the commotion of Porto’s downtown. Fun fact: It was once was an electrical substation.

Kasa da Praia

I dare say it has the biggest VIP area of all clubs in Porto, as the whole second level of the building is reserved for high-rollers, B-list celebrities, and club promoters. In my totally non-biased opinion as a former promoter, the sound mixes are quite similar to its competitors but I think Kasa da Praia stands out by having Hip Hop dedicated nights every week. Here, it isn’t unusual to bring in big names in the Portuguese music scene as guest performers.

10. Via Rápida

Via Rápida

With over 20 years of history, Via Rápida is a warehouse turned nightclub in the industrial district of Porto. It welcomes people of all ages and often does themed nights, like retro-inspired or culturally themed. Its only downside is that it’s only open to the public on (some) Saturdays.

Via Rápida

How can a business prosper if it’s closed to the general public on most days? Well, Via Rápida is historically known for being the preferred venue for university parties. Much like a sorority/fraternity, the students of each university organize the events, welcoming the partiers and tending the bars themselves (with a little help from hired security). On reception weeks, festivities may extend to three or four nights in a row!

11. Rendez-vous

Rendez-vous

One of Galerias de Paris’ most popular spaces is Rendez-vous . It’s somewhere between a bar and a club, as there isn’t much space to dance around. What makes this place so special is that it actually plays rock music every night! Here, you’ll be able to rock out to old classics and newer ones too, all subgenres from electro-rock to indie, garage, and alternative music.

On rare occasions, they’ll open an exception upon request and play some more commercial stuff, but they mostly stay true to their nature. “Bohemian Rhapsody” is the house hymn and it’s an unspoken rule to sing it as loud as your lungs allow once it comes on.

12. Industria

Industria

Not too far is Industria , one of the oldest clubs in Porto, open since 1986 and recently renovated. This is where locals and tourists come together in Porto to enjoy the best that electronic music has to offer.

You’ll feel welcome the moment you step in and you’ll be greeted with a warm smile each time you pay the bar a visit. But if you’re looking for a more mainstream sound, this may not be the place for you. Also, don’t show up early as the party only really starts to “heat up” after 3am.

13. Porto Tónico

club tour porto

Established in 2012, Porto Tónico is known for its wide range of traditional and house cocktails, and the best selection of liquors so that you may design a drink yourself.

This club in Porto prides itself on its ambiance and friendly service, providing a fun nocturnal environment without breaking the bank. It also has a nice outdoor seating area, perfect for warm summer nights.

14. RUA Tapas & Music Bar

club tour porto

It’s all in the name, isn’t it? RUA literally means street , and its name reflects the liveliness of the space when it’s filled with sounds, scents and people. The people behind RUA brings the street inside, and the gastronomy, music, and dance along with it.

RUA is known for its exquisite dishes and equally delicious live music. It isn’t a place you just casually drop by, as most visitors make a point to return and relive the experience as many times as they can.

What sets their kitchen and bar apart is the use of locally grown, high-quality ingredients. The chefs tend to introduce twists into their original recipes by utilizing whatever products are in season. Unlike most tapas bars in Porto, they offer a decent variety of vegetarian and vegan meals too.

15. Plano B

Plano B

Undoubtedly the holy grail of Galerias de Paris, Plano B is a multi-level cultural space with an appreciation for the visual and performative arts. Located in Porto’s downtown area, it’s decorated with retro-inspired elements, reminiscent of the boho-chic trend.

Plano B

Plano B is a multipurpose space that hosts concerts and clubnights, playing everything from jazz to rock, electronic and experimental music. On Saturdays, it opens up in the afternoon with a refined selection of quality domestic products such as wines, cheeses, jams, teas and other delicacies. Plano B is also responsible for organizing Mercadinho dos Clérigos, a monthly street market that has been going on since 2007.

Plano B usually stays open until dawn, and sometimes even beyond that. Therefore, it’s a good place to visit later at night, after a nice long pub crawl or when other bars and clubs in Porto start to shut down.

Porto nightlife areas

club tour porto

The Galerias de Paris Street is one of the main hubs of nightlife in Porto. Locals use this name to describe not only the street itself but the surrounding ones which are full of bars and clubs. Crowds of both locals and tourists gather here, especially on weekend nights to grab a drink and hang outside, continuously moving from one pub to another. Besides the last clubs and bars on the list, some interesting places to visit here are La Bohème , Café au Lait , Alma , The Gin House , and Era Uma Vez em Paris .

Not too far is Aliados , downtown’s main square and a busy place at night. From the aforementioned Boulevard Cub, you are a few minutes walk to Maus Hábitos , a space for cultural intervention (simultaneously a gallery, restaurant, club, and studio), Zoom , an LGBT friendly club known for drag performances, and Passos Manuel , and old cinema turned showroom.

Honorable mention goes to the Ribeira district, where you can enjoy a nice drink while overlooking the Douro river and enjoying some live music or busking performances.

Tips for enjoying the Porto nightlife

  • Enjoy St. John’s Festival:  If you happen to be in town on June 23rd, make the most out of this special night in which no one sleeps (not even grandma). It’s the longest night in Porto, bigger than New Year’s, a party that mixes sacred and profane traditions but is essentially just an excuse to get wasted.
  • Dress appropriately : If you’re in the mood for clubbing, don’t forget to dress for it. It’s not uncommon for people to be barred entry based on their attire. Think business casual meets EDM festival – a strange pairing, I realize, but it works.
  • Go to a sports bar:  There are quite a few good sports bars around Porto in which you can watch soccer matches and even some NBA and NFL if no major European soccer teams are playing.

  • Take the night bus : Unfortunately, the metro doesn’t ride all night long and taxi fares hike up during the darkest hours. However, there are plenty of nocturnal buses that connect downtown to all surrounding districts, so you’ll never have to walk home when your legs just don’t seem to work properly anymore.
  • Link up with the locals : It shouldn’t come much of a surprise that talking to the locals will help you figure out how to make the most of the night. Most Porto natives can communicate easily in English so don’t be shy and ask what’s their plan for the night, where you can grab the cheapest beer, and what venue will be playing your preferred kind of music.

Port cellar tours and Port tastings in Porto - updated for 2024

Porto is famed for producing Port wine, and a tour of one of the historic port cellars along with a port tasting session, is one of the best unique activities of the city.

Ancient laws dating back to the 17th century, dictate that for the sweet, fortified wine to be classified as Port, it must be stored and matured within the city of Vila Nova de Gaia, which sits opposite Porto on the southern banks of the Douro River. This means that within a relatively compact area of Vila Nova de Gaia are all of the major Port houses and their cellars (which are referred to as Lodges)

Many of the Port houses provide guided tours of their cellars along with Port tasting sessions. These tours and tastings sessions are informative, social and surprisingly inexpensive, and are a fantastic experience while on holiday to Porto.

This guide will detail the best Port tour and tasting sessions and help you get the most from this very enjoyable experience. Related articles: Introduction to Porto – Top 10 Porto

Port cellar tours in Porto

All of the Port cellars are situated on the southern side of the Douro River in the city of Vila Nova de Gaia. Each of the Port houses provides a slightly different experience, but they generally follow the same pattern: • An overview of the production of Port • The history of their company • A guided tour of the cellars (including photo opportunities) • A tasting of two or three ports

The tasting session often compares the three types of Ports; White, Ruby and Tawny or a selection of Ports of different ages.

The typical cost of a cellar tour, with a basic tasting, will range from €14-17. This type of tour is offered by all of the Port houses. More expensive tours include a premium selection of Ports, often hosted in a more impressive tasting room.

All of the Port cellar tours (except for Taylor's) are led by a tour guide, so they have a maximum number of spaces and set times for different languages. Tours should be pre-booked before heading to Vila Nova de Gaia, as turning up on the day can often lead to disappointment, especially in the peak summer season.

We always suggest visiting at least two Port cellars during your stay in Porto. This is a fantastic activity for later in the afternoon or evening, as you may leave a little bit tipsy!

The main tourist area of Vila Nova de Gaia lies along the banks of the river, and the port houses in this area (such as Sandeman and Cálem) will always be the most popular and sell out first. The cellars further away from the river, which are up a steep hill, provide a calmer atmosphere and often have more spaces available. These cellars include Real Companhia Velha, Graham's and Cockburn's.

The interactive map below shows the location of the Porto lodges within Vila Nova de Gaia. The shaded yellow area marks the main tourist area. ( Note: zoom out to see all of the points)

The best Port cellar tours and tastings sessions in Porto

With more than ten different Port houses providing tours and tasting sessions, there is a wide choice available to you. As these are all very similar, you will have a fantastic time whichever one you choose to visit.

The best Port cellars to visit are: 1) Ferreira 2) Cálem 3) Real Companhia Velha 4) Graham's 5) Sandeman 6) Taylor's 7) Ramos Pinto 8) Cockburns 9) Burmester

Insight: If you are new to Porto, we would recommend starting with one of the more tourism-focused Port cellars, such as Cálem or Sandeman, then have a second (or third) tour to one of the more atmospheric cellars, such as Real Companhia Velha, Ferreira, Graham's or Cockburns.

Ferreira is regarded by the residents of Porto as the best Port cellar to visit. It offers an informative tour of some of the oldest port cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia and concludes with a great selection of Ports. The Ferreira company is highly regarded by the Portuguese, as it is a wholly owned Portuguese company (most Port houses were British owned) started by an inspirational woman named Dona Antónia Ferreira.

Ferreira

If you have no prior knowledge of Port, Cálem makes a great starting point. It provides knowledgeable guides and fascinating interactive displays. The downside is that it can get very busy, with large tour sizes and slightly rushed tasting sessions. ( Cálem cellar tour tickets )

Real Companhia Velha provides a more authentic experience and features magnificent port cellars, however it is a long way from the main tourism area of Vila Nova de Gaia. Real Companhia Velha is one of the oldest wine companies of Portugal, having been started by King Jose I in 1757. ( www.realcompan hiavelha.pt)

Graham's is a highly recommended experience, with a relaxed atmosphere and a larger set of cellars (www.grahams -port.com ). The Sandeman cellar, at the heart of the tourism area, has enthusiastic guides and is always a popular choice with visitors: www.sandeman.com

Taylor's should also be mentioned, as it provides a self-guided tour with a multi-language handset. This tour is not limited by visitor numbers, which is great for the busy summer season or if your desired language tour is sold out at other cellars. Taylor’s also has a pretty outside tasting area in a charming courtyard garden. ( www.taylor.pt )

Ramos Pinto makes an interesting choice for your second or third Port tour, as it includes the original 19th-century office and details the 'unique' marketing techniques of the company. www.ramospinto.pt/

Cockburn's is the largest Port cellar in Vila Nova de Gaia. Their tour provides something extra, as here you are able to watch the coopers at work as they preserve and repair the wooden barrels. ( www.cockburns.com )

Burmester is a smaller Port cellar at the base of the Ponte Luís I, which is also well worth a visit.

Porto tasting at Ferreira

Porto tasting

Tourist insight: The port tours are excellent value, but the bottles of Port sold in the shops attached to the Port houses are often not good value. For standard bottles of Port, it is much better value to visit the wine shops in Porto or even the supermarkets. Unique gift: Each bottle of Port states the year it was produced, which can make a unique gift for a birthday or to commemorate a special year such as an anniversary.

Why are the Porto lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia?

All of the Port cellars are located in Vila Nova de Gaia, and the reason for this dates back to the 13th century.

Medieval Porto was effectively ruled by the bishop of Porto, and he taxed all boats that moored in the city. King Alfonso, seeking to avoid these taxes, established a second port in Vila Nova de Gaia (New Town of Gaia) opposite Porto on the southern banks of the Douro.

This port became the main centre for the transportation of grapes from the Upper Douro, and it became law in the 18th century that all Port must be matured within Vila Nova de Gaia.

1. douro valley .

club tour porto

The Douro Valley , stretching over 250,000 hectares east of Porto, is more than just a spot—it’s a vast region filled with towns and villages.

Known as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it’s one of the world’s oldest wine-producing areas. With 110,000 acres of vineyards, it’s a haven for wine lovers.

The Douro River winds through the valley and spans an impressive 897 km. But it’s not just about wine; the valley’s stunning landscapes make it a top choice for hiking and sightseeing.

How to Visit the Douro Valley Independently | For a Douro Valley day trip from Porto, a train route goes into the Douro Valley —  leaving from Porto’s São Bento and Campanha stations . The tracks out to the Douro Valley run close to the river for long stretches, so it’s a gorgeous ride out.

The train stops frequently at villages and towns along the way. If you want to go somewhere slightly larger, get off the train in the small city of Regua and explore the surrounding area. There are plenty of wineries nearby.

Alternatively, renting a car and driving yourself out gives you more freedom regarding where and when to go.

club tour porto

The families who live in the villages throughout the park maintain an incredibly traditional Portuguese way of life — sharing community water supplies and even doing laundry together at a village tank.

How to Visit Peneda-Gerês National Park Independently | The park really is expansive, so the best way to get to and around it is by car. Entre Ambos-os-Rios at the park’s edge is just over 100 kilometers by road from Porto. The drive should take you about 90 minutes, and then you have ample freedom to explore the park.

7. Braga

A view of the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte

At over 2,000 years old , Braga is Portugal’s oldest city and is the third-largest. While its size is noteworthy, its history is even more intriguing. Braga’s landscape is a canvas of varied architecture, interweaving lush squares, ornate baroque churches, and modern urban design.

Braga is just a short trip from Porto — once there, visitors can explore the ancient Braga Cathedral and the Biscainhos Museum — once a grand palace. Another spot is the 18th-century sanctuary, Bom Jesus do Monte, a UNESCO Heritage site, which also offers panoramic views from its hilltop location.

One of the must do day trips from Porto, Braga is also phenomenal local gastronomy to indulge in at traditional eateries.

🚘 Driving is also a straightforward 55 kilometers, or about 35 miles. The drive should take around 45 minutes.

Alternatively, this Porto to Braga day trip hits the same highlights , bringing you around in an air-conditioned van for the day.

8. Arouca & Paiva Walkways

Arouca 516 suspension bridge in the municipality of Arouca, North of Portugal

Arouca is home to 516 Arouca, the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge , offering daring visitors a unique perspective of the Paiva River gorge below.

The remainder of the Paiva Walkways, located near Arouca, is a wooden walkway stretching 8 km (5 mi) along the Paiva River. While the walkway is well maintained, there are several stairs to climb up and down, so walking is not the easiest.

Note that the walkways are ticketed, and a limited number of people are allowed daily.

How to Visit the Arouca Independently | There aren’t any public transport options to get you to Arouca from Porto, so the only way to make this Porto day trip independently is by car. There are parking lots at both ends of the walkway, either Espiunca or Areinho. The drive is about one hour from Porto.

Take a Tour to Arouca | This tour brings you to the town of Arouca as well as to the walkways and the suspension bridge. If you want to get a lot done in one day, this Paiva walkways tour from Porto also checks off the walkways and suspension bridge as well as nearby Aveiro.

club tour porto

Often dubbed the ‘Venice of Portugal,’ Aveiro is a city crisscrossed by waterways. When you visit, taking a leisurely cruise on one of the traditional Moliceiro boats gliding through the canals is almost mandatory.

Regardless of how you arrive, a stop at the train station is a must, where you’ll be greeted by walls adorned with stunning azulejos.

Hi. My husband and I, both seniors, will be in Lisbon on 28/3 till 1/4, and want to travel northwards for about 3weeks. Can you recommend a town that would be a good base for our day trips to all the gorgeous places further north than Lisbon including Porto; the Douro Valley etc etc. Thinking short term rents in Porto may be a little high so hoped you could suggest somewhere else. We plan to use the local trains to get around; really don’t want to hire a car, but if necessary we probably will. Many thanks, sharyn

If you want to explore outside of Porto, then you’ll need a car, unless you want to do tours. Yes there is a train and buses, but it can be tricky to enjoy the Douro Valley if you don’t have transporation. If you do want to stay somewhere in the Douro, i would recommend Pinhao as there is a direct train from this quaint little town straight to Porto. It is also in the heart of the Douro and really nice to explore (albeit a little small). When we stayed in the Douro we stayed in the town of Alijó. But we needed a car 100% to get around. If you still want to stay around Porto and still a little close, try places like Matosinhos or Vila Nova da Gaia. There is also a cute little beach town called Ovar that is 20 minutes away and they do have a train that goes to Porto. Any places that is not in Porto (in the city itself) should be a little more cost effective.

Introduction to Golf in Porto

Welcome to Porto, a vibrant city known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and delectable cuisine. But did you know that Porto is also a haven for golf enthusiasts? That’s right! This coastal gem offers some of the finest golf courses in all of Portugal. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, Porto has something to offer every golfer. So grab your clubs and get ready to tee off on an unforgettable golfing adventure in this picturesque destination. Let’s explore where to play golf in Porto and discover the beauty that awaits on each course!

Best golf courses in Porto

Estela golf club.

estela club where play golf porto

Situated close to the lively seaside resort of Póvoa de Varzim and only 30 minutes driving distance from Porto, Estela Golf Club is a typical links course. Built over three kilometres of beautiful dunes, Estela Golf Club provides breathtaking views over the Atlantic Ocean. Several big lakes add to its beauty, which can become quite challenging when the wind is blowing. With narrow fairways in the landing areas, all pressure is placed in the tee shot. Inaccurate shots will be punished if they land in the sand dunes, and on almost every occasion a ball lands off the fairway there is little chance of reaching the green with a second shot. Just like in the traditional links courses, most shots at the greens are open, allowing the ball to enter them rolling. If you manage to get there without many detours, you will find firm and fast greens.

estela golf club

Some holes at Estela Golf Club have wonderful views over the Atlantic Ocean and the mountains behind. The round starts gently, but quickly becomes challenging. Hole 3, a par 4, is 411 metres long and is considered the most difficult on the course. After that comes hole 4, the best opportunity to achieve good results. On this par 3, you have to hit over a valley onto an elevated green. Holes 6 to 9 place the highest demands on very accurate tee shots. These holes in particular are crucial for a good score. The second nine holes may not be as difficult as the first nine, but are still filled with challenges. For instance, the 10th hole is a par 4, dogleg at the left, with 373 metres but with an elevated green and well protected by bunkers that make it longer and harder. The 13th hole, a par 5, must be played with the utmost respect. The fairway runs along the beach and turns suddenly to the left before descending to the green, and many players tend to take a short cut here and end up in the dunes. The last par 5, hole 15, is even more difficult to play, with winds that demand distance in the tee-shot and a great precision in the 2nd and 3rd shots.

golf course where play golf porto

Oporto Golf Club is the oldest golf club in Portugal. It begins with a par 4 against the famous nortada , the prevailing north wind, which makes it rather difficult. The approach to the green, which is narrow and doubletiered, turns this first hole into an excellent test for any player. Although holes 4 and l1 are the most difficult ones, we consider the par-4 7th and par-3 14th to be the best that can be designed in terms of golf. The 9th and 18th, normally offer good opportunities for birdies, making a pleasant finish to a competition. In a superb atmosphere which is possible only among the traditionally hospitable people from the North of Portugal, the Oporto Club offers excellent facilities in its clubhouse, with a restaurant that is a general favourite of its members for eating out.

The existence of Miramar Golf Club is due to the initiative of Frank Gordon and the Portuguese Cláudio and Mário Martins. In 1931, they decided to create a golf club more open to the Portuguese, who in this way could have easier access to golf. It is a par 70 – 35 for each of the two nine-hole rounds and it has some holes that deserve a special reference. For example, the green of the 7th hole and hole number 9, a par 4 of exceptional class for its length, the difficulty of the out-of-bounds to the right, as well as a fast green defended by a bunker in front and another one behind. These are excellent holes, that any good player would appreciate playing.

This is a truly mountainous course as it is 600 meters above sea level. It has four water hazards and covers an area of 40 hectares. The first hole slopes deeply downwards and is 495 meters long and the last, on the contrary, rather shorter with 447 meters, slopes fairly steeply upwards. Hole 12 is 445 meters long and a good strong shot is necessary to get over the lake on the right hand side and attention should be paid to the left, because of the fencing that marks the out of bounds area. The green is defended by four bunkers. The course cannot be classified as difficult although it does have excellent and fast greens, the majority of which are short in length.

Do you need to book these tours and tastings in advance?

Does anyone have any recommendations?

We were there last week and did two. Augusto's, which was excellent, and Sandeman's which was ok. We both much preferred the Augusto's one.

We visited Quinta Do Bom Dia and really enjoyed it. The Port was excellent. We purchased more than we had thought we would it was so delicious.

I should have said that we had to book Sandemans, but we just turned up to Augustos.

Many thanks for your replies

Good to know those you particularly enjoyed and that you can just turn up for some of them 😊

We just walked in for Bom Dia, too.
