A visit to the Congo Basin is a transformational journey into one of the wildest, most isolated, most remote places on the planet. A rainforest second in size only to the Amazon, the Congo is home to more than 400 species of mammals — including the critically endangered Western Lowland Gorilla — 1,000 bird species, 10,000 plant species… and scarcely any outside visitors.

Another Congo

Our lodges are located within the safe and politically stable Republic of the Congo (not to be confused with the Democratic Republic of Congo, a separate country located 200 miles to the east). Rarely visited by tourists, our Congo is filled with delightful surprises, from the elegant restaurants and jauntily dressed denizens of the capital, Brazzaville, to the exquisite, untouched wilderness of the national parks where we operate.

Congo Safari Packages: Our Top Picks

The Republic of the Congo (the Congo, or Congo-Brazzaville) is a small country along the west coast of Africa. This basin is drained by rivers like the Sangha, Mambili, and the mighty Congo, which give a route through the jungle to far-flung national parks like Odzala-Kokoua . The wilderness is especially prized and traditional ways of life are preserved in certain areas. The heavy forested landscape is characterized by swamps, bais, and rivers; this is ideal habitat for western lowland gorillas; and it is the remarkable wildlife interactions accessible here that are attracting more and more tourists to the Congo . The highlight for visitors is gorilla trekking, which should not be missed.

Despite its tumultuous history, the French colony of Congo-Brazzaville is presently seen as tranquil, stable, and fast developing. Brazzaville, the capital, is sometimes referred to as the “Little Paris of Africa” due to the abundance of art, fabric booths, flower markets, cafés, and the aroma of freshly baked baguettes wafting from the city’s many boulangeries.

Still, tourism has only been around for a short while. Its cities may not be up to five-star standards, but its wilderness areas and wildlife encounters are, thanks to its relative isolation for so long. The Congo is an amazing place to visit if you don’t mind getting your hands dirty.

Understand [ edit ]

The Congo Basin region composes the majority of the world's second largest jungle after the Amazon. Because of this, and despite its size, the region is difficult to get around by land, with pirogues (and other boats) and aircraft the only ways to easily get around. Most of the region's inhabitants still live in small villages in the jungle, although many have moved to cities like Kisangani, Kindu, Bumba, & Mbandaka.

Get in [ edit ]

By boat [ edit ].

The Congo/Lulalaba River is the busiest route through the region. Rapids between Kisangani & Ubundu separate the river into two navigable sections: Kinshasa-Kisangani & Ubundu-Lubumbash (where it is called the "Lululaba River"). Travel along the river is one of the great African journeys for the truly adventurous. Boats, ferries, & barges ply the river regularly. However, there is no scheduled ferry service...people pay to ride on passenger boats & cargo boats/barges with the boat leaving the port when full and does not necessarily stick to a tight schedule. Boats become less frequent the further up the river you travel. While boats from Kinshasa arrive in Mbandaka almost daily, boats only reach Kisangani every 1-2 weeks (with the journey from Kinshasa taking 2-3 weeks). Boats are even less frequent on the upper section of the river, although you may be able to find one from Lubumbashi to Kindu a couple times a month. A short portage railroad connects Kisangani & Ubundu, allowing river travel from Kinshasa to Kindu.

There are also a few boats a month connecting Kinshasa or Brazzaville to Bangui, CAR, from where you can easily take a ferry or pirogue across to Zongo. Just be sure to have the right visas!!

Small boats (often dugout tree trunks) called pirogues are the most common transport along the rivers of the Congo Basin. However, finding one to take you where you want may be difficult and is very slow. Although some are motorized, fuel may be hard to find.

By plane [ edit ]

As of 2012, the only scheduled services in the region are: FlyCAA which serves Kisangani ( FKI  IATA ), Mbandaka, Bumba ( BMB  IATA ), & Kindu and Congo Airways (Kisangani, Goma, Kindu & Kinshasa). Both airlines offer domestic service from other major cities in the DRC. Some airlines will cancel a flight at the last minute because there are not enough passengers to make a profit (and pay for fuel, etc.) and don't expect your trip to be on schedule...a journey from Kinshasa to Kisangani may only take a couple hours, but plan a whole day for delays!

The only international service to the region has been Kenya Airlines from Nairobi-Kenyatta to Kisangani, which has started & stopped a few times. Kinshasa is served by Air France & Brussels Airlines from Europe and several African airlines, from which you can transfer to boat or a domestic flight to reach the Congo Basin. It is also possible to arrive in Brazzaville or Bangui (both also served by Air France, Brussels Airlines, & a number of African airlines) and then travel by boat to the Congo Basin. Just be sure to have the right visas. Using the decent (by DRC standards) National Route 4, you can transfer by road from Kigali , Rwanda. It is also possible to fly into Entebbe , Uganda for visits to areas near the Ugandan border, although onward travel is very dangerous.

By car/bus [ edit ]

The only decent option to reach the Congo Basin by road is National Route 4 from Bukavu on the Rwandan border in South Kivu to Kisngani. The road is sealed for much of its length, although travel may be slow due to people/animals on the road, overloaded trucks traveling slow, & checkpoints. Safety is improved since the end of major fighting a decade ago, but is still a little iffy. Bunia can be reached by road from Uganda. It is possible to travel from Cameroon or Congo-Brazzaville to Bangui, CAR on moderately-ok roads, but traveling by road in the CAR is very difficult due to notoriously corrupt police/soldiers manning checkpoints along the highways. From Bangui, vehicles can be taken by ferry across the river to Zongo.

Pretty much every other option to reach the Congo Basin by road is very difficult and consists of muddy dirt tracks that are impassible during and shortly after the rainy season.

By train [ edit ]

The only train line entering the Congo Basin connects Kindu with Lubumbashi in the Katanga region . The line was rehabilitated in the late 2000s, although the rolling stock is second-hand from Europe & India. Stops at a number of towns along the line—some as long as a day—make the journey from Lubumbashi to Kindu a 4-8 day ordeal. Do not expect sleeper compartments, a dining car, or even comfortable seats. You will most likely have a seat in an aging passenger car at best or have to stand or sit atop in an empty freight car at worst. Train schedules are erratic, and at times there may be 2-3 weeks between departures. Contact the station master at any station to inquire about the next scheduled train, but expect delays. Pay only on the day of departure & bring plenty of snacks, food, & bottled water for the ride.

Get around [ edit ]

See above for info on traveling the Congo River. Waterways are the main form of transport in the region. A great number of pirogues, some motorized, ply these rivers and can be hired (or you can pay to ride with others/cargo). However, finding a pirogue going where you want to go is difficult and the journey can take weeks. Aside from travel on the Congo or Ubangui Rivers and tourist rides around Kisangani, travel by pirogue (as well as most travel in the region) is best left for only the most adventurous and hardcore travelers with adequate preparation. Solo travelers should never venture into the jungles alone.

By air [ edit ]

There are no scheduled, commercial flights within the region except for, possibly, Mbandanka-Kisangani or Kisangani-Kindu. Be careful, as some airlines run a multi-city route and you may have to make a few connections on return. Example:Kinshasa-Kisangani-Kindu-Lubumbashi-Kinshasa flown on one day a week. It may be easy to travel from Kisangani to Kindu, but to return to Kindu may require traveling to Kinshasa, Lubumbashi, or Goma and connecting to a different flight (perhaps with a layover for a couple days).

The UN has a large presence in the region and operates scheduled flights throughout the Congo Basin, but if you are not associated with a UN agency or another aid agency it may be difficult to hitch a ride (but worth a try). A large number of small planes travel the region and are worth trying to hitch a ride.

By road [ edit ]

Almost all of the roads away from the cities are nothing more than muddy tracks. Travel can take weeks (especially if your ride breaks down) and may not be possible during and shortly after the rainy season. Many trucks will carry paying passengers. Be very careful in selecting your ride. Nearly all are overloaded and passengers sit atop a pile of carefully loaded cargo. Falling off or the truck overturning are very real dangers. Try to get a ride in the cab if at all possible...maybe offer a little more money than the driver asks and point to the cabin. The trucks traveling around the Congo Basin are old and usually the driver and a helper or two have the knowledge to fix problems and navigate mudholes and makeshift log bridges. Do not expect stops to relieve yourself (simply do your business off the side of the moving truck). If your truck breaks down, a fix may take days or even a week or more. Same goes for getting stuck in mud. Definitely an experience left only for the most hardcore travelers.

There are three lines in the Congo Basin. The line connecting Kindu with the Katanga region will make stops at some of the towns along the line. The portage line bypassing the Congo's rapids runs from Kisangani to Ubundu and only travels when there is cargo to carry...meaning it may be a couple week between runs. A third line runs from Bumba eastward to Isiro. This is a narrow-gauge line damaged during the war and in a very degraded state. It seems service has restarted on a small western section from Bumba-Aketi (and possibly Buta) and, while there were reports of trains running in the eastern section in 2008, the track eastwards of Aketi or Buta is most likely abandoned.

See [ edit ]

  • Boyoma Falls . On the edge of Kisangani, these are the last cataracts on the Congo until Kinshasa/Brazzaville. Fishermen set up conical traps for fish and can be seen tending to these traps. Some have realized that tourists want to see them and there are reports that they will charge $$ to see them (stopping you before reaching the river) and/or photographing them.

Do [ edit ]

  • Congo boat rides . See the "get in" section for details. A trip by boat along the Congo is one of the world's greatest wild adventures. Trips by pirogue for a few hours or a few days can be arranged in most cities along the river. Only a couple tour operators in the country offer these rides, but if you speak good enough French or Swahili, you can probably talk a pirogue owner into a short trip (make sure you understand what you're doing & where you're going).

Eat [ edit ]

Drink [ edit ], stay safe [ edit ].

Much of the northeast of the Congo Basin remains in a state of conflict. See the warning in the Democratic Republic of the Congo article for more information.

Natural World Heritage in the Congo Basin

congo basin tour

UNESCO has been taking action in the Congo Basin since 2000 in order to improve the conservation and the management of natural World Heritage sites, those already inscribed as well as those which have the potential for inscription.

The two programs being implemented - Biodiversity Conservation in Regions of Armed Conflict: Protecting World Heritage in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Central Africa World Heritage Forest Initiative (CAWHFI) – rely on the World Heritage Convention to reinforce and to promote the protected areas in the region through the sustainable management of the whole ecological landscape.

Biodiversity in the Congo Basin

The forests of Central Africa represent the world’s second largest area of tropical rainforest after the Amazon and distinguish themselves by their outstanding biodiversity and high level of endemism. The conservation of the Congo Basin’s forests is essential for its 30 million inhabitants who depend on the countless environmental products and services that the forests provide. The region also plays a central role in climate regulation and carbon sequestration.

The central African humid forests, covering an estimated surface area of roughly 1.6 million km², constitute one of the world’s most important area of natural heritage.

9 natural properties of the Congo Basin, recognized for their Outstanding Universal Value, are inscribed on the World Heritage List.

These 9 World Heritage properties are in 5 States Parties: Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon.

4 sites have been placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger; all of them are in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

14% of the surface area of humid forest block in Central Africa has been designated as protected.

UNESCO World Heritage Centre’s action in the Congo Basin

Two programs aiming at enhancing the conservation of the Congo Basin’s natural heritage are coordinated in the Natural Heritage Unit of the World Heritage Centre.

Biodiversity Conservation in Regions of Armed Conflict: Protecting World Heritage in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Supporting the conservation of Congolese sites which already have World Heritage status, but have been inscribed on the List of World Heritage in Danger.

Central Africa World Heritage Forest Initiative (CAWHFI)

Identifying new potential World Heritage sites through a landscape approach and improving the management standards of these sites so that they can meet the criteria for inscription on the World Heritage List. CAWHFI’s activities are targeting three transborder landscapes in Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo and Gabon.

BEYOND THE PATH ADVENTURE

The Democratic Republic of the Congo & Republic of the Congo – the Heart of Africa -15 days

nature, culture, sightseeing

We would like to invite you to an exceptional journey. DRC is the second country of Africa crossed by one of the longest rivers in the world. This is also a country of the second largest complex of rainforests in the world, second only to the Amazon forest. It is one of most precious but also least known ecosystems.

During our tour, we will try to see th the rainforests of the Congo Basin near Lake Tumba. We will also do our best to present to the travellers the life of the inhabitants of DRC, a country that is incredibly diverse from the ethnic and cultural points of view. Despite the unstable and often tragic history of DRC, trips to this country are possible and safe.

DAY 1 | Kinshasa

Flights to Kinshasa usually take place in the afternoon and evening. After arrival, visa formalities. Transfer to the hotel and, after a short rest, an organisational meeting and dinner.

DAY 2 | Kinshasa – visit of the city

After breakfast, we will set off to visit the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We will see the St. Anne’s Cathedral and the Mausoleum of President Laurent Kabila. We will visit the gallery called Symphonie des Arts. Then we will go to the Lola ya Bonobo sanctuary for bonobo chimpanzees, where we will spend some time with these exceptional primates. It will be possible to take a bath in the nearby lake, if anybody wants. Then we will return do Kinshasa where we will co to the crafts market called “the market of thieves”. In the evening, dinner and night rest at the hotel.

DAY 3 |Mbandaka

In the morning, transfer to the airport and flight to Mbandaka – a capital of the Équateur province, located at the junction of the Ruki and Kongo Rivers. It was founded by Henry Morton Stanley in 1883. After arrival, we will start our sightseeing – we will visit the ethnographic museum and the “New Life” mission. Then we will walk through the city and the Eala botanic garden with its collection of over 4,000 plants growing on 371 hectares of land. In the evening, return to the city and dinner in a restaurant overlooking the majestic Congo River. Night rest at the hotel.

DAY 4 | Mbandaka – Mooto

After breakfast, we will leave Mbandaka and go to the town of Mooto founded as a mission in 1960 near Lake Tumba. After arrival, preparation of the campsite which will be our base for exploring the area. We will sleep on the campsite in tents.

DAY 5 | Mooto area

Whole-day visit to the Lake Tumba area. In the afternoon, we will go to local villages to see the daily living of their inhabitants. We will also take a hike through the woods with local hunters, to get to know the secrets of the forests of the Congo River Basin. The hunters will show us medicinal, poisonous and edible plants. They will also present the traditional methods of hunting used by Pygmies. In the afternoon, visit to a village of Pygmies, where we will have time for taking a closer look at the customs and culture of the inhabitants and listen to traditional songs. Return to the camping site and night rest in tents.

DAY 6 |Flooded forest, Bokotè village

After breakfast, we will go to the Bokotè village where we will start our cruise on traditional wooden boats through a forest flooded by the Congo River tributaries. It is a unique forest formation, one of the most precious natural habitats in the region. During the cruise, we will see many species of birds and insects. We will end the cruise in the Bokotè village where we will sleep in tents. In the evening, there will be some time for social integration with the village inhabitants at a bonfire. For dinner, we will have a Pygmy dish. We will sleep in tents.

DAY 7 |Bikoro – Tumba Lake

Po breakfast, we will set off for the town of Bikoro located at Lake Tumba. There we will start a cruise on boats on the lake, where more than 114 fish species have been described so far. We will visit the coastal forest habitats. We will have some time for watching numerous bird species. Return to Bikoro where we will visit one of the missions and the school. We will sleep in tents.

DAY 8 |Bikoro – Mabali

After breakfast, we will leave Bikoro and head to Mabali. En route we will stop at the natural rubber plantation, for a short visit and some rest. Transfer to Mabali in the early afternoon. After arrival, we will visit the research centre that conducts studies on the biodiversity of Central Africa. The Congo Basin is the second largest complex of rainforests in the world, second only to the Amazon forest. At the same time, its highly biodiverse fauna and flora is probably least known. We will take a hike through the primeval forest that has never been logged. We will see the largest trees that are present in the area of the Congo River catchment area. Practical information

Tour description.

  • the length of the tour : 15 or 12 days in Africa;
  • start of the trip: Kinshasa – DRC
  • end of the trip: Kinshasa / Brazzaville DRC/ RC
  • the highlights of this expedition The highlight of the tour will be the visit to one of the most interesting regions of Africa from the natural and cultural point of view. We will visit the second largest rainforest in the world, after the Amazonian one. We will try to present closer to the travellers the contemporary life and traditions of the inhabitants representing different ethnic groups, whom we will visit in the area of Lake Tumba. Those of the trip participants who will decide to extend the tour by the Republic of Congo will go to the Lesio Louna Reserve where they will have an opportunity to meet lowland gorillas and many other animal species. We also plan a cruise on one of the largest rivers of the world – the Congo River – and to see the photogenic Zongo Falls.

The tour will be an expedition to one of the regions of Africa least visited by tourists. It will be oriented on nature, cultural and sightseeing tourism. Because of the special nature of the visited places and of the expedition features, the travellers are required to be physically and mentally fit. The planned sleeping in tents near Lake Tumba and driving on poor quality roads may cause considerable fatigue and discomfort. Other difficulties include temperatures above +30°C, high humidity of the air and often intense rainfalls. In Kinshasa and Mbadaka, accommodation is planned in hotels. Boat cruises and hikes in the rainforest are planned in the itinerary.

You should bear in mind that the Democratic Republic of the Congo is a country of many cultures and traditions, having a special and unique character. Despite the history of these countries, which was at times tragic and difficult, trips to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Republic of the Congo are possible and safe, provided they are conducted reasonably and with the necessary precautions.

Depending on the political situation, the length of the tour and the order of visited places may change. In a situation of a serious threat to travellers’ safety, the tour may be cancelled. We will keep you updated as to whether the expedition is possible.

Visas and documents

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the planned end of the tour.

Before departure, you must obtain tourist visas in the nearest embassy of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Republic of the Congo (travellers who will extend their trip).

To obtain a visa, you may use the services of visa agents or the help of BTP Adventure.

You should take with you for the trip a photocopy of your passport (the photo page) and an additional ID document.

Health and vaccination

  • Take with you for the trip the yellow vaccination booklet with certified valid yellow fever vaccination – it is impossible to enter the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo without this document and vaccination.
  • Before departure, we recommend a consultation with a family physician and a tropical medicine specialist.
  • Vaccination against yellow fever, tetanus, diphtheria, viral hepatitis A and B, meningococci and typhus is recommended.
  • Malaria prevention measures (Malarone or Lariam) are necessary.
  • In some regions, there is a risk of ebola but curently it is very low.
  • There is a risk of dengue and tuberculosis at the places planned to be visited during the trip.
  • We recommend visiting https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/countries .
  • During our expedition, we will drink only bottled water. You should avoid ice in your beverages and eating raw or undercooked foods. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Republic of the Congo it is possible to obtain medical care only in Kinshasa and Brazzaville.
  • The cost of a private medical visit is usually over USD 100, and a day of hospitalisation costs between USD 100 and 200.
  • Because of difficult travelling and accommodation conditions and particularities of the country, good physical fitness is necessary. Furthermore, your patience will definitely be tested and you should prepare for hardships of long journeys, lassitude and discomfort.
  • Please take with you a first aid kit and a sufficient supply of your regular (prescription) medicines, if any. Some useful contents of the first aid kit:
  • insect repellents – absolutely necessary
  • medicines for malaria prevention
  • high sun protection cream (recommended SPF 50)
  • disinfectants, wound dressing materials
  • analgesics and antipyretics
  • antibiotics, as a precaution
  • anti-diarrhoeals, electrolytes and vitamins

Currently, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is moderately stable. In some regions of the country, there is a risk of armed conflict and terrorist threat. However, we design our itineraries so as to avoid places that are potentially dangerous (the north-eastern region – border area with the Central African Republic and South Sudan – and region the south-eastern region – border area with the Angolan Enclave of Cabinda).

It is very important to stay vigilant at such places as markets and crowded streets, because of pickpockets and rare robberies. You should avoid walking alone, especially after dark.

Owing to the good relations we have with local contractors, we keep following the news to be aware of any potential threats and safety risks. We also recommend you to read the latest news on the Foreign & Commonwealth Office website:

https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice .

During the tour, please take seriously the instructions of our contractors, guides and tour leader.

It is very important to respect local customs and abide by local laws and regulations. You will receive the necessary information on an on-going-basis from your local guides and the tour leader.

It is strictly prohibited to take photos and make video recordings at military and police installations and at airports. You are also not allowed to take photos where people in military/police uniforms are present!!!

Photographing people is possible only when they expressly agree to it. Taking pictures when the subjects have not allowed it often ends up with escalating aggressive behaviours.

The legal tender in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the Congolese franc. The legal tender in the Republic of Congo is the Central African franc. Currency exchange is possible at the airport and in banks. Using payment cards is possible only in hotels and in restaurants in capitals of both countries. Caution should be exercised because of frequent data theft scams. The best foreign exchange rate is for euros and US dollars. UK pounds are not generally exchangeable. Apart from big cities, payments are possible only in local currencies.

For current foreign exchange rates see www.xe.com or install xe.com on your phone.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Republic of the Congo, the official language is French. Several dozen local languages are also spoken. For self-guided tours, you must speak French and English.

Customs, culture, religion

The Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo are multi-ethnic and multi-religious countries. The vast majority of the inhabitants are Christians belonging mainly to the Catholic Church and to many Protestant churches. We will be able to observe diverse traditions of the individual ethnic groups and local communities.

It is very important to respect local customs and abide by local laws. You will receive the relevant information from your local guide or the tour leader.

The tour dates are proposed in periods of the best possible weather conditions at the sites included in the itinerary. The best time for trips to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Republic of the Congo is the period between June and October. Temperatures are up to +30°C during the day and +20°C at night. High air humidity and rainfalls, sometimes heavy, should be expected. A considerable difficulty is the bad quality of roads, especially the mud after rainfalls.

For detailed information see https://www.meteoblue.com/en .

Communication, Wi-Fi, electricity

Mobile network coverage is available in most towns and villages. In areas outside of large towns, mobile network services are practically unavailable. Purchase of a local SIM-card is complicated and of little benefit. Before the trip, please enquire with your mobile network operator whether they have a contract signed with operators in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Republic of the Congo and what the prices of call and SMS roaming are. To avoid a nasty surprise, we recommend disabling mobile data usage.

Wi-Fi is available only in hotels in the capitals of both countries.

Additionally, we recommend taking a capacious power bank, solar charger or car charger. In national parks and in the course of car rides, it will be possible to charge electronic equipment only from vehicle power supplies.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo and Republic of the Congo:

power sockets of type C and E. Voltage 220 V, frequency 50 Hz.

Useful equipment

For climatic and cultural reasons, loose garments will be most appropriate: long trousers, long skirts, long-sleeved shirts, which can be easily washed and will quickly dry. The most comfortable footwear for the tour will be lightweight boots. Palladium brand boots are recommended. You may walk in open sandals but in towns and desert regions this may be uncomfortable because of stones, thorny plants and sharp grasses. Light hiking boots may prove useful. The following are worth taking:

  • aluminium sleeping pad or light self-inflating mat and thin summer sleeping bag; we provide a mattress during the trip but taking your own pad or mat will improve your sleeping comfort
  • sachet for documents and money
  • wet wipes for body cleaning and antibacterial gels
  • dry shampoo
  • polar fleece jacket or warmer blouse, especially useful at evening and night times
  • head cover and sunglasses – mandatory, the sun is no joke!
  • comfortable summer clothes, useful during practically the whole trip
  • light T-shirts/shirts
  • useful odds and ends: torch, Swiss Army knife, sewing kit (usually is not needed but is not heavy and does not take much place), chargers, mug (for special occasions); inflatable neck pillow, useful on the plane and during car rides; small wallet for the local currency; books to pass the time on flights and car rides

Price: £ 3990 p/p

During the tour, we will  we will travel by passenger cars or minibuses, and also, if necessary, by off-road vehicles. Moreover, the itinerary includes a domestic flight Kinshasa – Mbandaka – Kinshasa. During our trips, cruises on motor and rowing boats are envisaged on Lake Tumba and the Congo River. For the travellers who will extend the trip by the Republic of the Congo, a cruise by ferry from Kinshasa to Brazzaville is envisaged. Speed depends on the road surface conditions, terrain characteristics and number and length of stops.

Accomodation

We are not able to guarantee a uniform accommodation standard at each of the planned sites during the stay in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Republic of the Congo. Our priorities are your comfort, appropriate location, character of the site and historical, cultural and natural values. We always place emphasis on the support of local community when selecting the sites for our accommodation. In general, rooms will be assigned on the assumption of two people sharing a twin room (rooms with individual bathrooms). The surcharges for single rooms are quoted in the “Price” section. During our tour, we plan accommodation in capitals of both countries in 4- and 3-star hotels, depending on availability.

  • During our stay near the Lake Tumba we will sleep in tents which we will put up at the camping sites with the help of our guides. In larger cities and in capitals of both countries we will stay in hotels.
  • In the area of the Zonga Falls and in the Lesio Louna Reserve, accommodation in lodges with individual bathrooms is planned.

Meals are included in the tour price, as specified in the itinerary. B – breakfast, L – lunch, D – dinner. In most places we will visit, shops and markets are well stocked but prices of some goods – especially the imported ones – may be higher than in most European countries. The cuisine of both countries is extremely varied, reflecting the local particularities and cultures of the individual regions.

Congo Gorilla Safaris Logo

Congo River

Congo river – congo safaris tours .

Congo River: Congo safari tours have increased over the years with many tourists travelling to the Democratic Republic of Congo to trek the rare and endangered Mountain Gorillas in Virunga National Park or encounter the Eastern Lowland gorillas in Kahuzi Biega National Park . The Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo forms the greatest part eastern Congo thus creating the lifeline for the survival of wildlife and flora in the region.

The Congo River, historically known as the Zaire River, is a river in west-central Africa. It is the continent’s second longest river, behind the Nile, with a length of 4,700 kilometers. It begins as the Chambeshi River in the highlands of north-eastern Zambia, between Lakes Tanganyika and Nyasa in Malawi, at an elevation of 1,760 meters above sea level and around 700 kilometers from the Indian Ocean.

It then flows in a massive circumferential circle to the northwest, west, and southwest until draining into the Atlantic Ocean near Banana, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Its drainage basin encompasses nearly the entire territory of that nation, as well as the majority of the Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, eastern Zambia, northern Angola, and sections of Cameroon and Tanzania.

The Congo River , with its numerous tributaries, constitutes the continent’s biggest network of navigable rivers. However, navigability is hampered by an impenetrable barrier: a sequence of 32 cataracts throughout the river’s lower course, including the famed Inga Falls.

The Congo is rendered impassable between the seaport of Matadi, at the head of the Congo estuary, and Malebo Pool, a lake like extension of the river, due to these cascades.

The capitals of the former states of the French Congo and the Belgian Congo were founded on opposite banks of Malebo Pool, which serves as the point of departure for inland navigation: on the left bank Kinshasa, presently the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and on the right bank Brazzaville, currently the capital of the Republic of the Congo.

Congo River

The Amazon and the Congo are the world’s two main rivers that come from tropical zones where significant rainfall occurs all or almost all of the year. The Congo basin upstream from Malebo Pool gets an average of 1,500 mm of rain every year, more than one-fourth of which is discharged into the Atlantic. However, the Congo’s drainage basin is only approximately half the area of the Amazon’s, and the Congo’s rate of flow—1,450,000 cubic feet per second near its mouth—is far lower than the Amazon’s flow of more than 175,000 cubic metres per second.

Wildlife within Congo River Basin.

The emergence of the Congo may have resulted in the allopatric speciation of the bonobo and common chimp from their most recent common ancestor. The bonobo, like other famous species like as the Allen’s swamp monkey, dryads monkey, aquatic genet, okapi, and Congo peafowl, is indigenous to the region’s humid woodlands.

The Congo River Basin has a very high species richness and one of the largest known concentrations of endemics in terms of aquatic life. As of 2009, about 800 fish species have been identified in the Congo River Basin (excluding Lake Tanganyika, which is linked but biologically very different), while significant areas remained mostly unexplored.

In 2006, for example, the Salonga National Park region, which is almost the size of Belgium, had still not been sampled at all. New fish species are described scientifically from the Congo River Basin on a regular basis, and many un described species are recognized.

The Congo River System contains by far the most diversity of any African river system; the next richest are the Niger, Volta, and Nile, which have roughly 240, 140, and 130 fish species, respectively.

Because of this, as well as the significant biological variations across the areas of the Congo basin , which include ecosystems such as river rapids, deep rivers, streams, swamps, and lakes, the Congo basin is frequently separated into various eco-regions (instead of treating it as a single Eco region). The Lower Congo Rapids eco-region alone includes around 300 fish species, including roughly 80 endemics. Whereas the southern half (Kasai Basin) alone includes around 200 fish species, roughly a fifth of which are native to the area.

The Congo River Basin is home to several turtle species, as well as the slender-snouted, Nile, and tiny crocodiles. The lower reaches of the river are home to African manatees.

What to do during your visit to Congo?

Trekking Mountain Gorillas in Virunga National Park

All gorilla trekking safaris in Virunga national park are conducted by experience and professional park rangers. All hikes are conducted by Virunga Rangers and local porters who are in charge of daily monitoring of the 10 habituated gorilla groups in Virunga. Treks often take 1-2.5 hours to complete each trip, depending on the location of the group being hiked and the severity of the terrain.

Congo River

Visitors will be given surgical masks to wear when in the presence of the gorillas in order to protect their health. Because mountain gorillas are sensitive to human disease, we do ask that visitors cancel and/or rebook if they are feeling poorly at the time of the booked excursion. Visitors to mountain gorillas must be at least 15 years old.

Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trekking in Kahuzi Biega National Park

Trekking with eastern lowland gorillas in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Visitors interested in hiking eastern lowland gorillas can do so in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Kahuzi-Biega and Maiko National Parks, which are located in the country’s east. Lowland gorilla trekking in Congo , on the other hand, is best done at Kahuzi-Biega national park.

Bird Watching

DR Congo is claimed to contain around 1139 bird species, the most of which are native to the country, making it one of the top birding locations in Africa, particularly due to its biodiversity. The overall number of bird species is unknown since different sources provide different figures. Bird viewing is mostly done in Congo’s forests, savannah regions, marshes, rivers, and lakes.

Birdlife of the Democratic Republic of Congo consists of about 1191 bird species, 21 of which are endemic and one of which has been introduced by humans. This country boasts the most diverse birdlife of any African country.

Key species to lookout for when on a birding safari in the  Democratic Republic of Congo include; the Congo peafowl which is the national bird of DR Congo, the New World quails, the Congo peacock which is and endemic species, the Little grebe, Great crested grebe, Greater and Lesser flamingos, and the African green-pigeon to mention but a few.

Visit Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage

The Senkwekwe Centre, the world’s sole institution for orphaned mountain gorillas, is located near the headquarters of Virunga National Park in Rumangabo. The Senkwekwe Centre is a unique refuge affording the gorillas the chance to live happy and safe lives in its wooded enclosure, with skilled personnel providing daily care for the orphans who were individually separated from their family due to the impact of poaching.

Congo River

Climbing Mount Nyiragongo

Nyiragongo is a stunning stratovolcano that is home to the world’s biggest lava lake. The lower wooded slopes of the volcano are home to a variety of creatures, including chimps, various types of monkey, the three-horned chameleon, bushbuck, and a plethora of bird species, making the ascent to the summit of this powerful mountain all the more rewarding.

Visit Lwiro Sanctuary

The Lwiro Chimpanzee Sanctuary was established in 2002 to rehabilitate chimps orphaned by illicit poaching for wildlife pet trade and, on occasion, bush meat. The institution is home to around 92 chimps and 108 monkeys from 13 distinct species. Orphaned chimpanzees or those rescued from illicit wildlife trafficking are typically seen in Virunga and Kahuzi-Biega national parks. The center collaborates with a variety of organizations.

Congo (DRC) Gorilla Trekking & Safari Tours

The name Congo evokes images of a vast tropical jungle cut through by the mysterious river for which it is named. Who hasn’t dreamed of setting foot there? Unfortunately, much of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the region’s largest country, is unsafe for travel. Virunga National Park, for instance, was open for mountain gorilla trekking and Nyiragongo volcano climbs for several years prior to closing in 2020, but it is unlikely to reopen anytime soon due to security concerns. The news is better from Kahuzi-Biega National Park, where eastern lowland gorillas can be tracked in the wild with relative ease as an outing from neighboring Rwanda.

6 Questions About Congo (DRC) Gorilla Trekking and Safari Tours

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

congo basin tour

What are the main tourist attractions?

“The main attraction of Eastern DRC is gorilla trekking. The region is home to two subspecies of these endangered gentle giants. This includes the eastern lowland gorilla, which is endemic to the DRC (in other words, it occurs nowhere else in the world). The eastern lowland gorilla can only be tracked in Kahuzi-Biega National Park, a short distance northwest of Bukavu (a port city at the southern tip of Lake Kivu on the border with Rwanda). This activity is just as rewarding as visiting the better-known mountain gorillas. Indeed, some might say it is actually more so, as they are even larger than their mountain-dwelling cousins, and low visitor numbers at Kahuzi-Biega make for a more adventurous and less-touristy experience. Eastern DRC is also an important stronghold for mountain gorillas. These live on the bamboo-covered slopes of the Virunga Mountains, a scenic volcanic range that extends into Rwanda and Uganda. Unfortunately, although mountain gorilla trekking is offered in the other two countries, the Congolese portion of the Virungas (protected in Virunga National Park) has been closed to tourism since March 2020 and is likely to remain off-limits for the foreseeable future. When Virunga NP does reopen for gorilla trekking, other activities are likely to include climbs of volcanic Mt Nyiragongo, which contains the world’s largest lava lake, and relaxing on Lake Kivu’s beautiful Tchegera Island.”

How does gorilla trekking in DR Congo compare to other countries?

“The gorilla trekking experience in Kahuzi-Biega (and when it reopens, Virunga NP) is very similar to what is offered in Rwanda and Uganda. The same one-hour time limit to spend with the gorillas applies. However, as visitor numbers are still very low, the Kahuzi-Biega experience feels more exclusive and the setting is more remote. The number of permits allocated per gorilla group is only four to six (less than the eight permits allocated per group in Uganda and Rwanda). A big difference between trekking in Kahuzi-Biega and doing the same activity in Uganda or Rwanda is that you will be visiting eastern lowland gorillas as opposed to mountain gorillas. Based on recent reports, trekking conditions are generally easier in DRC than in Rwanda or Uganda, and you are unlikely to have to walk for more than an hour to locate a gorilla group. Last but not least, a gorilla trekking permit in DRC costs US$400 per person as opposed to US$700 in Uganda or US$1,500 in Rwanda.”

Is a DR Congo safari safe?

“Visiting Kahuzi-Biega has been considered safe for a few years now. In order to attract visitors to this park, security measures have been put in place to make a day or overnight return visit from Rwanda very straightforward and secure. That said, the DRC has a long history of political turbulence and unrest, and most other parts of the country, including Virunga NP, cannot be regarded as safe at the time of writing. Even where Kahuzi-Biega is concerned, the security situation might change, so check with your tour operator before booking.”

Can I extend my East African safari with a trip to Congo (DRC)?

“Most people don’t visit DRC as a stand-alone trip. Instead it makes a perfect extension to a classic safari in Kenya or Tanzania. A short flight from either gets you to Rwanda’s capital city Kigali. From there you can fly or arrange to be driven to the Rwandan border town of Kamembe (also known as Rusizi/Cyangugu), which lies on the Lake Kivu shore near the Congolese port city of Bukavu. Some operators offer gorilla trekking in Kahuzi-Biega as a day trip from Kamembe, while others will arrange overnight accommodations in Bukavu or closer to the park. A gorilla trek in DRC also slots well into an extended holiday in Rwanda, where you can go chimp trekking in Nyungwe National Park, which is very close to Kamembe and Bukavu. You can also enjoy a couple of nights in Akagera National Park, the country’s Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino) destination. Wildlife densities in Akagera are not comparable to the most famous parks in East Africa, but this off-the-beaten-track destination is incredibly scenic and rewarding in its own right.”

How much will a DR Congo safari cost?

“Most visitors to Kahuzi-Biega opt for a 3-day gorilla trekking package out of Rwanda’s capital city Kigali. This typically costs US$1,200 to US$1,500 per person. Another possibility is a 4-day package that also includes chimp trekking in Rwanda’s Nyungwe National Park, which you pass through on the way between Kigali and Kahuzi-Biega. This will add around US$600 to the price. A variety of longer tours incorporating a visit to Kahuzi-Biega are also available.”

What is the best time of the year to visit DR Congo?

“The best time to visit Eastern DRC is during the Dry season from June to September. The area has a very wet climate and it can rain at any time, but June to September is drier and the forest trails tend to be less slippery. March to April and October to November are the peaks of the short and long rains. The drier period between the long and short rains, from December to February, is a great time to travel too. It shouldn’t be too wet and there are very few visitors around at this time. Whenever you visit, make sure you bring lots of waterproof clothing, and be prepared to get wet a few times.”

Mikeno Lodge

mikeno lodge dr congo tours

Mikeno Lodge is a luxury facility in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Virunga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, that offers the right blend of excitement and serenity. It is ideally positioned for gorilla hikes, as well as acting as a vibrant hub for the area’s unique birdlife and resident monkey population, and is consistently singled out for its comfort and friendliness of its staff.

Mikeno Lodge, located 90 minutes from the eastern city of Goma, has breathtaking views of the rift valley, Nyiragongo , and Mikeno volcanoes. The Lodge has twelve bungalows, each distinct but with a similar attitude and aesthetic: they are located in the surrounding forest and built from a combination of local lava stone, mahogany, and thatch. Baboons, colobus monkeys, and chimpanzees are common visitors to the Mikeno region, which is home to a variety of the Congo’s 1,185 recognized bird species.

The design is lavish and modern, as in the main spaces, but with throws, furnishings, and textures that reflect the Lodge’s unique surroundings. All of the bungalows are private, with en-suite bathrooms, stone-carved baths, a fireplace (which is lit by candlelight when supper is served), double or twin beds, and decking with lovely views of the forest and hilly environment.

Tchegera Island Tented Camp

Kibumba Tented Camp

The Lodge The lovely thatched-roof and wood-framed main area is perched atop a hill, with stunning views of the tree canopy. Meals and icy cocktails are served in the lovely open-sided dining and bar areas, where downtime is spent between activities. There’s a wood-burning fireplace to keep things warm when the temperature drops at night. Because the camp is surrounded by electric fencing, wildlife wandering in and out is unlikely; however, keep an ear out for woodland owls and other jungle sounds.

Rooms The 18 two-person tents are not only adequate but also extremely comfortable, with queen-sized beds and starched white linens, as well as hot-water bottles neatly tucked between the sheets for chilly evenings. Toilets and hot showers are provided in the en-suite bathrooms. There are even two wall outlets for your camera or phone, overhead lights, and plenty of refilled bottled water.

Fleve Congo Hotel

Elegantly designed. A soothing atmosphere. Excellent breakfast. Fleuve Congo Hotel by Blazon Hotels is located in Kinshasa, 9 minutes to Symphonie des Arts. It features free WiFi, a tennis court, and an outdoor swimming pool that is open all year. The air-conditioned, soundproofed rooms are equipped with a closet, desk, mini bar, and flat-screen TV. Some rooms at the hotel have a lounge and dining space, while others have a city or river view. Every room has a private bathroom with a hot tub and free toiletries. Breakfast is served everyday at the resort. Breakfast is available as a buffet, American, continental, or full English/Irish. This facility also offers vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free breakfast.

Despite the proximity to the equator, the climate in Rwanda is rather mild and one speaks of a tropical highland climate. The temperatures are usually between pleasant 19 ° C and 25 ° C.

Some parts of the country, it can cool down significantly at night due to the high altitude. In the west of the country, at Lake Kivu, it is mild and temperate, cool in the highlands, sometimes with relatively high humidity. The average temperature in the highlands is around 19 ° C. It is usually warmer in the east.

Two dry periods and two rainy seasons. A short dry spell extends from December to January, with average temperatures in Kigali of around 20.3 ° C. The great rainy season is from February to May. During the great dry season, which lasts from June to mid-September, Kigali is around 20.5 ° C warm. In the little rainy season.

Due to the unstable political situation in the country, the republic is considered a less safe travel destination in contrast to some neighbouring countries. That’s why our  DR   Congo Tours  are only on reservation and with prior checking of the current security situation.

Eastern regions are often less secure than other parts of the country due to the high mineral density and disputes over influence. In larger cities, beware of pickpockets and behave discreetly.

Infrastructure

In fact Congo’s road network is only marginally developed and only about two per cent of the roads are paved. This is mainly due to the fact that the heavy rains in the Congo Basin make the conditions for road or rail construction difficult. Waterways are therefore preferred throughout the country.

Since navigable rivers run through two-thirds of the country, this facilitates the connection between the cities. The electricity and water supply, like the road network, is worse. Only about ten per cent of the population has access to electricity and water. A telephone or mobile network is usually only available in larger cities and it does not always work reliably there either.

A country that once epitomised the brutality of the European scramble for Africa, the Congo can firmly lay the sorrows of generations of colonial oppression at the feet of two men, Henry Morton Stanley and King Leopold II of Belgium. It was Stanley’s river journey in 1874 that opened up the African interior to exploration and exploitation, something that Leopold was keen to monopolise, as he turned the country into his own private kingdom for over two decades. Even after pressure from other European powers forced the Belgian parliament to declare the territory a Belgium colony in 1908, European involvement in the country continued to be largely one of brutality and exploitation.

In 1960 a growing nationalist movement under Patrice Lumumba gained independence, paving the way for what many hoped would be a democratic future for the old Belgian colony. Rich in natural resources and staggering beauty, independence was, unfortunately, followed by decades of civil unrest, corruption and political repression.

Today the Congo still has plenty of problems, but there are areas, particularly along the banks and tributaries of the mighty Congo River, that offer the adventurous traveller a chance for some true off-the-beaten-track encounters and, as usual, Wild Frontiers are at the forefront of trail-blazing these new routes.
