Costa maya excursions & cruise tours.

The cruise port town of Costa Maya lies on the Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. It boasts a rich history, soft beaches, and a stunning coral reef just offshore, making it a desirable Caribbean destination. The port of Costa Maya also serves as the closest access point to many of Mexico's lesser-known and less excavated Mayan ruin sites, offering visitors an incredibly worthwhile experience easily accessible directly from the cruise ship. Caribbean cruise lines send hundreds of thousands of cruisers to Mexico's second-busiest port every year. Discover the excitement that awaits in this lively port of call!

Ancient Ruins Excursions

A few of our top cruise excursions and tour sites include the Mayan ruins at Chacchoben, Kohunlich, and Dzibanche, which are three of Mexico's best-kept secrets. At the archaeological site of the Chacchoben Mayan Ruins, you can learn about the rich history of the area and later spend time with locals who will teach you how to make traditional and authentic Mexican food (not tacos). At the Kohunlich Mayan Ruins, you can visit many still intact rooms of a Mayan palace. Lastly, the Dzibanche Mayan Ruins, believed to be an early capital of the Kan Dynasty, feature important temples of Mayan history, including pyramids built using 5th-century Maya architectural methods. In Costa Maya, there's no shortage of sightseeing opportunities!

Guided Tour Adventures

After marveling at these incredible pieces of ancient Mayan history, swim with dolphins in Costa Maya's dazzling blue waters for a day excursion complete with excitement and intrigue. You should also scuba dive to see the wide variety of sea life in Costa Maya. If you're looking for a snorkeling excursion, make sure to visit the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, full of amazing tropical fish and coral formations.

For some adventure, consider a boat tour or a kayak or canoe rental at the Bacalar Lagoon, also known as the Seven Color Lagoon by locals, where you can also see the wonderful cenotes (natural deep-water wells). There are many gorgeous places to swim, windsurf, paddleboard, and sail.

And if you're looking to relax, take a beach break and enjoy one of Costa Maya's beautiful beaches. Mahahual Beach is a great place to relax, with plenty of beach chairs and umbrellas available. There's also an excellent beach club with an open bar and comfy lounge chairs right on the sea! This little town is known as a quiet place in the evenings and then springs to life when the cruise ships come in. We have Costa Maya shore excursions and tours for every activity level at every price point, so read our ratings and book one today!

Frequently Asked Questions About Costa Maya Cruise Excursions

Got questions? Don’t worry, we’ve got the answers to the most frequently asked questions about Costa Maya cruise excursions.

What do I wear on Costa Maya cruise excursions?

What you wear is going to depend on your particular excursion. If you’re going to the beach you’ll need a swimsuit and coverup, sandals, and maybe snorkel gear. If you’re exploring ancient ruins or taking a food tour you’ll want comfortable, light clothing, and comfortable closed-toed shoes.

You definitely want to remember sunglasses, and/or a hat, and sunscreen. If you’re going in the ocean,  you need to have reef-safe sunscreen , meaning it does not contain Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, or Octocrylene, among other ingredients.  Just because the label says “reef-safe” it does not mean that it is.  Instead, opt for a mineral sunscreen, like  Blue Lizard ,  Thinksport,  or  Sun Bum Mineral .

Remember to also pack any necessary personal items, such as a camera, insect repellent, and any medications you may need. It’s always a good idea to check the weather forecast for the day of your excursion to ensure you’re prepared for any changes in weather conditions.

Are Mayan ruins worth visiting on Costa Maya cruise excursions?

Absolutely, exploring the Mayan ruins in Costa Maya is a must. Sites like Chacchoben and Kohunlich offer a captivating glimpse into the Mayan civilization’s history and architectural achievements.

With experienced guides and lush jungle settings, it’s a rewarding way to connect with an ancient culture and its impressive remnants. Many Costa Maya cruise excursions offer combo tours to see Mayan ruins along with beach breaks or other activities too, making it a perfect way to spend your day while in port.

How far is the beach from the Costa Maya cruise port?

Mahahual Beach is very close to the port, taking only a few minutes in a cab. A little further south you’ll find Yaya Beach and La Bamba Beach.

Approximately an hour inland is Bacalar Lagoon, where you can find white sands and private beach clubs. The best way to visit is definitely via an excursion, on which you can take boat rides, kayak, visit the Beach Clubs and more.

What’s the best time of year to take Costa Maya cruise excursions?

The prime time for taking Costa Maya cruise excursions is during the dry season from late November to April, boasting ideal weather for outdoor activities. While this period coincides with peak cruise season and increased crowds, November or April can offer a quieter experience.

It’s wise to avoid the hurricane season from June to November and always monitor weather forecasts for the best excursion experience.

Final Thought On Costa Maya Cruise Excursions

Cruising is one of my favorite ways to travel, and these cruise ship excursions are sure to make it one of yours too. Any one of these is sure to give you an incredible adventure during your time in Costa Maya.

27 Fun Things For Cruise Passengers to Do in Costa Maya

Unheard of roughly a decade ago, Costa Maya is quickly becoming a favorite of passengers.

Located just about 130 miles south of Cozumel, the port offers a lot of the perks of its famous island neighbor, but without near the amount of development. The result? A tropical, beachy port that’s still manageable and not as heavily commercialized as Cozumel.

Main port area in Costa Maya

Cruise lines have been quick to pour into Costa Maya. Its location right near Cozumel (the most visited cruise port stop in the area) means that Costa Maya can be added into an itinerary without having to go far out of the way. Chances are good that if you are headed on a cruise that travels the western Caribbean, you’ll make a stop in Costa Maya.

And while the area isn’t as developed as some older cruise ports, it still offers plenty for passengers to do. Whether you want to explore ancient ruins, do some world-class scuba diving, or simply find a place to eat and drink to your heart’s content, there’s something for you.

Here are a couple of dozen ideas of things to do during your day in port…

Enjoy All You Can Eat/Drink at Maya Chan

Maya Chan Beach Entrance Sign

Located about 5 miles down the coast from the Costa Maya port, Maya Chan is a small, independent day resort that features enough room for only a few dozen guests at each time. You book a private cabana complete with hammock and daybed and enjoy all the snacks, drinks, and food you can eat. In short, for about $70 per person you get to spend the day in paradise. Transportation to and from the port is included as well so you don’t even have to worry about how to get there. You can read our full review here .

Book an Open Bar Pass at a Beach Restaurant

Similar to Maya Chan but not near as secluded, there are several beach bars/restaurants in the main town of Mahahual that offer tables, loungers and umbrellas right on the beach… and unlimited drinks. One such place is Jaime’s at the Blue Reef and another is the YAYA Beach Club . These restaurants offer an easy way to relax during your port stop, even though your memories might be a little hazy after spending all day here.

Get Your Souvenir Photo in Front of the Costa Maya Sign

costa maya tours cruise passengers

No trip to Costa Maya is complete without getting your photo in front of the sign to show you’ve been there. It’s located right at the start of the pier to the ships and you can’t miss it. Sure it’s a touristy thing to do, but it’s fun and memorable… and it’s free!

Import Your Own Bottle of Tequila

Tequila and Mexico go hand in hand. In the port area you’ll find all sorts of shops, including one selling dozens of different types of tequila. Stop in to pick up a bottle as an authentic (and tasty) souvenir before you head back to the ship. Don’t plan on drinking it during your cruise, however. Alcohol is checked in when you get back to the ship and returned to you the last night of your cruise.

See the Flamingos in Port

Flamingos standing

Wind your way through the port area and you’ll eventually find a small sanctuary amid all the hustle and bustle. Just behind the low wall are several beautiful pink flamingos looking right at home on a small sandbar with tropical surroundings. Try not to disturb them, but it’s a great photo op and a cool way to see some beautiful creatures up close.

Take a Taxi into Town

Costa Maya used to be an open-air trailer pulled behind a pickup truck that would bring you into the main town (Mahahual) for a couple of bucks. As of our last visit however, that seems to be gone and now you can either walk (around 45 minutes) or take a taxi (5 minutes). Rides cost only $3-4 per person, and it’s well worth it than the somewhat confusing walk in the heat and humidity. Taxis are everywhere both in port and in Mahahual, so you’ll have no trouble finding one.

Go on a Snorkeling Excursion

We’ll be honest, sometimes the seaweed can make the beaches at Costa Maya less than desirable. However, the water is still very clear if you get off the shore a little bit. That’s why it’s a popular spot to snorkel. Excursions are available through your cruise line and the pros can take you to spots where you’ll see abundant wildlife under the water.

Book a Diving Excursion to Banco Chinchorro

Located off the coast of Mahahual, Banco Chinchorro is the largest coral atoll in the northern hemisphere. There are even a number of shipwrecks to explore, including a Dutch galleon where you can still see its cannons on the seafloor. Dive shops in Mahahual will offer tours, and some cruise lines might also have excursions.

Pick up Anything You Forgot at the Pharmacy

Pharmacy in port

When you’re on the ship, you have two options if you need some toiletries or over-the-counter medicine. You can either go without… or pay insane prices at the ship’s shops (we’ve seen DayQuil for $17 a bottle!). If you forgot or need anything, there is one other option — Costa Maya has a pharmacy in port with just about anything you’d need. It’s also considerably cheaper than buying these items on the ship.

Hit the Souvenir Shops for Anything You Can Imagine

In the port area there are plenty of opportunities for souvenir shopping. In fact, it’s stall after stall of stands selling everything from jewelry to sombreros and everything in between. If you’re on the hunt for a keepsake to remember your trip, Costa Maya makes it easy to go shopping.

See How Chocolate is Made

At Kakaw in the port area, you can get a first-hand tour of the history of chocolate. You’ll see the origins of the treat and see how it’s made. Of course, you’ll also get plenty of samples and a chance to purchase more to take home.

See How Mexico Used to Be in Mahahual

For decades Mahahual was a sleepy fishing village. While it’s certainly grown (and can be busy on days when ships are in port), in many ways it still has its character as a small town. There is a main street, lots of dirt roads and a number of small shops and restaurants. If you’re expecting Cozumel or Cancun, Mahahual shows what life used to be life before Mexico’s tourism boom.

Visit the Mahahual Lighthouse

Lighthouse in Mahahual, Mexico

Just down the coast from the cruise pier is a large lighthouse that stands on the point at the beginning of Mahahual. While it takes only a couple of minutes to see, it’s a neat landmark on your way into town. You can also take a photo with the “Mahahual” sign (complete with a huge marlin sculpture) to remember your vacation.

Take in the Malecon Near the Beach

costa maya tours cruise passengers

After you get a ride into Mahahual, you’ll find there is a “main drag” — a walkway that winds down alongside the beach. On one side you’ll have the beach and the other is filled with shops and restaurants.

Want to eat/drink with your feet in the sand? Want to get a massage on the beach? Want to grab some souvenirs? You can do it all here. The beach and swimming are available too, but restaurants have taken over most of the best spots. It’s easy enough to set up a spot and order something while you enjoy the beach.

Take a Drive on a Dune Buggy to Explore

Dune buggy

In most ways the area around Costa Maya and Mahahual are pretty rustic. There aren’t a lot of paved roads… which means your vehicle better be equipped to handle rough terrain. For a fun time, you can take a dune buggy excursion that takes you off the beaten path — literally. The trips allow you to drive, and head out to a secluded beach and explore the jungle. If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, this is the ticket. Check your shore excursions on the ship for details.

Hit the Spa for Mayan Healing Rituals

Sure you can head to the ship’s spa… or even get a massage on the beach for that matter. But Costa Maya offers a special “ Mayan Healing Rituals ” that include an herbal bath, a sweat lodge, clay mask, a coconut milk bath, and a hammock massage. It’s a unique take on the traditional spa experience and a trip to the spa that won’t soon be forgotten.

Visit the Ruins of Chacchoben

There’s no doubt that Chichen Itza takes the prize as the biggest and most popular Mayan ruins in the area, but it can also be crowded and it’s a long way from Mahahual. However, only an hour away are the ruins of Chacchoben . This smaller site gets fewer visitors but still gives you an impressive sense of the advanced Mayan people. It includes several excavated pyramids, wall, and staircases that laid covered from more than 1,000 years until the discovery of the site in the 1940s.

Sail in the Most Beautiful Water Aboard a Catamaran

What better way to spend the day surrounded by some of the most beautiful water than to hop aboard a catamaran and soak up the sun? Cruise lines offer excursions aboard the boats, which many times come with a lunch and a snorkeling session. If you get seasick it may not be for you, but it’s great if you want to avoid the crowds on shore.

Take a Ride on the Party Bus to a Beach Club

Did you come on the cruise to party? If so, check out the party bus . It’s an excursion offered through the cruise lines that gives you an hour-long ride on a huge guitar-shaped bus where the atmosphere is lively and the drinks flow freely. After your ride you are dropped off at a beach club to spend the rest of your day… with an open bar to continue the party. Just be sure to bring a few bucks for lunch so that you don’t have to drink on an empty stomach.

See the World Underneath the Waves on a Glass-Bottom Boat Tour

If you want to get out in the water but don’t want to snorkel or scuba dive, you can always take a glass-bottom boat tour. These trips will take you out in the gorgeous water and give you a chance to see what’s underneath the waves. The best part is you don’t get wet, making it perfect for small kids or those with mobility issues. Look at the excursions with your cruise line to book.

Hang Out by the Pool in Port

Pool at Costa Maya

As you exit the ship you’ll make your through the port area where there are lots of shops, restaurants, and things to see. One draw is a massive swimming pool where cruise guests can lounge and swim — complete with swim-up bars. It’s free to swim and hang out if you buy something from the nearby restaurants, making it a good option if you’re looking for an affordable way to spend the day. Simply walk into the port area, and you’ll run into the pool.

Explore the Kohunlich Ruins

We’ve mentioned Chacchoben, but Mayan ruins are common in this area. Kohunlich is another site that’s about two hours from Costa Maya. Fewer people seem to visit given the distance. That means if you want to explore a major archaeological site without the crowds, this is a solid option.

Have a Slice at Pizza Papi

Hidden back in the small town near the port is a highly rated pizza joint — Pizza Papi . Described as “Bob Marley meets Day of the Dead,” the vibe is unique and the pizza looks amazing. It’s a fun place to grab a cold drink, eat hot, wood-fired pizza, and realize that there is nowhere else like it in the world. One thing to know is that the restaurant doesn’t open until evening, so you’ll need to have a late visit in port to be able to check it out.

Get Close to Tropical Birds at Aviarius

Aviarius

Aviarius is one of the most unique things to do in Costa Maya. Within the port area that you visit as you exit the pier, there is Aviarius — an encounter with tropical birds that traverses the port. You’ll walk on suspended bridges from station to station above the port, with chances to get up close and personal with all sorts of tropical birds, including flamingos and macaws. It’s also a great way to get amazing views of the cruise ships in port.

Work on Your Tan in the Shadow of the Ship

While we’ve mentioned the pool at Costa Maya, there is also a man-made beach area near the pool with loungers available for cruise passengers. If you want to work on your tan, this is the spot to do it, within a short walk of the cruise ships. Just know that it can get busy, so if you’re wanting quiet and relaxing… this isn’t it.

Stay on the Ship

Most people don’t consider this to be an option, but staying on a cruise ship during a port of call can be relaxing. With everyone heading out, the ship can feel like it’s all yours. The pool is less crowded, there are no long lines to get something to eat, and there’s simply a more relaxing vibe on board. It’s ok to simply stay on the ship during the port of call. It’s your vacation!

17 Best Things to Do in Costa Maya [Cruise Port Guide]

costa maya cruise port guide

Sharing is caring!

If you’re going on a Western Caribbean cruise, there’s a good chance that you’ll be visiting the port of Costa Maya, Mexico. Costa Maya serves as a gateway to the Mexican Caribbean, offering many fun and interesting things for cruise passengers to see and do!

The Costa Maya cruise port was specifically built to cater to cruise passengers, providing many activities and attractions both in and around the cruise terminal. Although a few years ago this port was lesser known than popular Cozumel , Costa Maya is now frequented by several cruise lines.

There are a lot of great things to do in Costa Maya while on a cruise, including activities right at the cruise terminal, shore excursions to Mayan ruins, and beach clubs.

Where Is Costa Maya Cruise Port?

Costa maya cruise port photo

Costa Maya Cruise Port is a popular cruise destination located on the eastern coast of Mexico, in the state of Quintana Roo, near the small fishing village of Mahahual. Costa Maya, Mexico is approximately 124 miles (200 km) south of Playa del Carmen and 149 miles (240 km) south of Cozumel.

Situated on the Caribbean Sea, Costa Maya is an ideal destination for cruise ships exploring the Mexican Caribbean region. The Puerto Costa Maya is in close proximity to popular tourist attractions, such as ancient Mayan ruins and beautiful beaches, making it a popular stop for cruise itineraries in the Western Caribbean.

Costa Maya Cruise Port Overview

Costa maya cruise port cruise ship dock

Cruise ships typically dock at the Costa Maya Cruise Port, and it’s common to have three to four cruise ships dock at a time.

Passengers can walk off the cruise ship along the t-shaped pier into the cruise port area. However, it can be a longer walk than it looks. If you have an excursion to meet, allow at least 15 minutes to walk to the meeting area.

There are free trolleys available for cruise passengers who have have difficulty walking or would like the service.

Once in the Costa Maya port, you’ll find a large swimming pool with a swim up bar and free lounge chairs. There are several restaurants (many serving Mexican cuisine) and bars, boutiques, and shops selling local crafts and souvenirs.

You’ll find a tourist booth with information for local beaches and excursions that will take you outside of the cruise port area. There is also a meeting area for those who have pre-booked Costa Maya shore excursions and tours.

Costa Maya cruise port was severely damage by Hurricane Dean in 2007 and took several years to recover. We visited recently while on a Virgin Voyages cruise, and could see that the area has much improved.

Costa Maya – What Cruise Passengers Need to Know

The currency in Costa Maya, Mexico is the Mexican Peso. However, US dollars are widely accepted. Keep in mind that you may receive change in Pesos, even if you pay in US dollars.

The symbol for Pesos is $, like the US dollar, which can cause some confusion. It’s a good idea to double check pricing when making a purchase in US dollars, as well as to check the change that you’re receiving.

ATM at the Costa Maya Cruise Terminal

If you prefer to use the local currency, you can withdraw Pesos at ATMs, which are located within the Costa Maya cruise terminal.

The official language in Costa Maya, Mexico is Spanish. However, English is widely spoken by tour guide, shopkeepers and restaurant workers at the cruise port and surrounding tourist areas.

When venturing outside of the cruise terminal area, the locals may be less proficient in English, but overall communicating should’t be a problem. Knowing a few words or phrases in Spanish, including please and thank you, is always helpful.

The weather in Costa Maya, Mexico, is typically warm and tropical throughout the year, with temperatures ranging from the(mid-70s to low 90s Fahrenheit (mid-20s to low 30s Celsius).

The dry season, from November to April, is mostly sunny and rain-free. The wet season, from May to October, is generally humid with occasional rain and sun showers.

Costa Maya Cruise Review

Costa-maya-cruise-port-review-excursion

During our recent cruise to Costa Maya on Virgin Valiant Lady, we decided to do a day trip to Chacchobeen Mayan Ruins. We’ve been to Costa Maya cruise port on past cruises and wanted to explore this region beyond the man made cruise terminal.

We met our cruise sponsored shore excursion at the meeting spot and had a good 50 minute drive to the archeological site. The park guide showed us around the ruins and Mayan temples and explained about the ancient culture and people. While visiting, we saw spider monkeys in the trees above.

costa maya tours cruise passengers

After touring for about 2 hours, we made our way back to the cruise port on a comfortable coach style bus. I was glad we did this tour in Costa Maya, as visiting other Mayan ruins sites like Chichen Itza is a far distance from this port, as well as Cozumel.

While we enjoy the popular Costa Maya cruise port, and they’ve done a great job making sure there are plenty of things to do near the cruise ships, it can get crowded. With 3 to 4 ships in port at a time, the swimming pool and lounge chair area is too busy for me. However, it might be a good port to visit in the morning. Then, head back and stay on the cruise ship while everyone else is in port !

Panoramic photo of the pier and the cruise terminal in Costa Maya cruise port

Everything you must-know about Costa Maya cruise port: the terminal; things to do, shore excursions; Mahahual beach, Mayan ruins, and more ...

By: Editor-in-Chief Update: May 26, 2023

Many passengers on a cruise to Puerto Costa Maya (in Mexico) choose to stay at the cruise port terminal without realizing that there is much more to do and many attractions to enjoy nearby.

  • How to explore
  • Where is Costa Maya
  • Where cruise ships dock
  • Shuttle bus
  • Cruise terminal
  • Top things to do

Beaches and beach club day passes

Mahahual beach and village.

  • Shore excursions (Shorex)
  • Must-know: tourist info, language and currency
  • Safety, emergencies, and basics

Because the Costa Maya area is so sparsely populated , the local port authorities developed along the last decade an excellent cruise terminal with all services and amenities for passengers, lots of entertainment, bars, restaurants, pools, and great shopping.

But the Costa Maya cruise port is also the gateway to the lovely beaches of Mahahual and spectacular Mayan ruins like Chacchoben, Kohunlich, Dzibanche, and Kinichná.

Mayá, the Lost Mayan Kingdom Theme Waterpark, is within walking distance of the cruise terminal in Costa Maya, and the Maya Chan Beach (an all-inclusive private beach resort) is a 20-minute drive south. These attractions are between 2 miles (3.2 km) and 100 miles (160 km) from the cruise port terminal.

Costa Maya is a major cruise port of call in the Western Caribbean itineraries during the Fall-Winter season, with as many as 1.5 million passengers and over 500 cruise ships visits in 2019.

The cruise port in Costa Maya has a very appealing character. The port area is neat and well maintained. On the whole, Costa Maya is very safe . The local population is very friendly but not pushy and speaks English reasonably well. For those cruising with families, there are lots of things to do . Cruise passengers with disabilities or with walking difficulties will find it easy to wander around in Costa Maya on their own.

How to explore Costa Maya on a cruise

Cruise passengers wishing to discover famous Mayan Ruins like Chacchoben should look into booking shore excursions, be it with your cruise ship or with local tour operators. For those who want to enjoy an all-inclusive beach, it is advisable to book a day pass.

But you can easily travel on your own (by taxi, golf cars, or an affordable shuttle bus) to the Mahahual Village, where there is a long beach with lots of activities, bars, and restaurants. Keep reading to learn more about Mahahual.

Within walking distance of the cruise pier, there is a run-down but intriguing Mayan Museum and, of course, all the attractions in the Cruise Terminal. There are three possible ways to discover and enjoy a day at the cruise port of Costa Maya:

  • Book a Shore Excursion
  • On your own by shuttle, taxi or golf car
  • On foot around the cruise terminal

Where is Costa Maya cruise port

Bathed by the Caribbean Sea, Puerto Costa Maya is on the East coast of the Yucatan peninsula near the south border of the Mexican State of Quintana Roo with Belize. The cruise terminal is close by the village of Nuevo Mahahual (with a tinny population of 920) Cozumel cruise port is 128 miles (206 km) to the north, and Belize City cruise port is 77 miles (144 km) to the south.

Other popular cruise ports in the Western Caribbean itineraries are also within a night sail away from Costa Maya, such as Roatán , 182 miles (293 km), Harvest Caye, 158 miles (255 km), and Grand Cayman 420 miles (675 km).

Where do cruise ships dock in Costa Maya?

Ships dock on a medium-size cruise purposely built port with T-shaped piers and quays for up to four cruise ships to moor. Whatever you decide to do, all cruise travelers will have to pass by the terminal building unless you stay onboard.

The entrance to the terminal with its massive Mayan replica door at the end of a perpendicular pier to the coast is impossible to miss. At a 90 degree angle to this pier is what used to be the primary docking pier.

Free trolley at the pier

The perpendicular pier to the coast is rather long. However, there is a free trolley for those with walking difficulties or not willing to walk, which is particularly convenient if cruising with young children.

Photo of Pier Trolley in Costa Maya

Pier Trolley - Costa Maya

The pier trolley travels on a continuous loop . But you should be prepared for a bit of a wait if four mega-ships are in port, which only seldom happens. The pier trolley must not be confused with the shuttle , which runs between the cruise terminal and Mahahual.

What's in the cruise terminal

Photo of Tour Dispatch in Costa Maya

Services and amenities

As you get close to the entrance to the Terminal, you will see the Tour Dispatch area and a late minute tour desk to book an excursion if you haven't booked one already.

Cruise passengers will also find in the terminal many activities, diverse entertainment, and shopping (more about all these below). And the following services and amenities:

  • ATM (US dollars only)
  • First aid and pharmacy
  • Information kiosks
  • Shuttle bus to Mahahual

Shopping and attractions at the cruise terminal

Once inside the terminal, shops are the first thing you will come across. On the left-hand side, craft markets sell all sorts of souvenirs. On your right, the typical duty-free shops you would expect in any Caribbean cruise port, such as the ubiquitous Diamonds International and its sister Tanzanite International.

But there are also well-known Mexican stores selling Tequila or Boots like Veari and Rogers Boots. Cruise tip: cigars and tequila are the best buy (quality/price) in Costa Maya.

The Dolphin Discovery , with pools where shows and swimming with the aquatic mammals are the main features, is among the top attractions in the Costa Maya cruise terminal.

Photo of Terminal Swimming Pool in Costa Maya

Terminal Swimming Pool - Costa Maya

The already mentioned large saltwater swimming pool bordered by pool bars is a major highlight of the cruise terminal. But there are also many other attractions such as:

  • Callejón del Sapo: traditional market, bars and restaurants
  • Aviarius: hanging bridges trail with exotic birds
  • Kakaw: chocolate factory and tasting
  • La Consentida: tequila museum and tasting
  • Papantla's: traditional artistic flying show
  • Mayan Healing: pre-hispanic rituals and spa
  • El Faro (restaurant): grilled food with sea views
  • Flavors of Mexico (restaurant): traditional mexican dishes
  • Cantina Latina (restaurant): mexican cuisine in a party atmosphere
  • Cafe Mexico: mexican coffee products
  • La Fruteria: natural juices and fruits

Local Transportation, tours, taxis, buses and golf cars

The terminal has two exits into a large parking area - this is where shore excursions tour buses do park. But it is also where you will find other local transportation.

A local tourist booth offers different packages for Mahahual's beach clubs, including umbrellas, lounge chairs, showers, all sorts of water sports, and, obviously, bars (some serving light fares as well).

If none of these packages appeal, or if you just want to spend a couple of hours at the beach in Mahahual , it is pretty easy to get on the shuttle , take a taxi or a golf car to look around Mahahual before deciding where to lay your towel and what to do.

Photo of Shuttle Kiosk in Costa Maya

Shuttle Kiosk - Costa Maya

In this large parking area, you will also find a shuttle bus to Mahahual ($3.00 per person each way), taxis (around the same price per person), and Golf Cars (starting at $30 per hour) if you wish to explore the area on your own. Although the golf cars may not be available in the parking area of the cruise terminal, check this link - Mayahual Golf Carts - to double-check availability and eventually book an alternative golf car rental.

What's outside the cruise terminal

There is only one exit out of the gated cruise terminal's parking area. The gates open into a street with a central pedestrian corridor lined by buildings, which not long ago had a bustling activity.

Photo of Road Outside Terminal in Costa Maya

Unfortunately, in 2007 and 2012, two hurricanes devastated Costa Maya, and these buildings are still waiting for restoration. Cruise passengers booked with online tour operators will meet their guides along this street outside the gated area of the cruise terminal.

The Mayan Museum is also on this street (on the right-hand side). This small free museum has a rather shabby entrance, but the interior displays interesting jade exhibits and historical boards for those wishing to learn more about this pre-Columbian civilization..

Photo of Jade Sculptures at the Museum in Costa Maya

Right after the museum, there is a taxi stop and a Mayan pyramid replica that many cruise visitors like to climb for a photo memory . Some cruisers and staff say that the taxi stand rates are better at this stop than at the terminal but the Editor hasn't found this to be 100% accurate.

Mahahual Beach - Costa Maya

If planning to go to Mahahual , it is good to know that the northern area is the nicest but the most crowded. By contrast, at the southern tip of the beach, the ocean is very shallow and not as inviting. Cruise tip: regardless of how you plan to get to Mahahual, head to the middle section of the beach.

Malecón Mahahual - Costa Maya

Parallel to the Ocean and bordering the sand, there is a main pedestrian 'road' - the Malecón Mahahual . This is lined on the land side by bars, restaurants, souvenir shops, a couple of hotels, water sports shops (fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, catamaran, jet skiing and so on); and one of the Editor's favorite bookshop in the Caribbean where no-shoes and no-shirts are welcomed.

On the beachside of the Malecón, the cruise passenger will find one beach club after another with chairs, umbrellas, bars, and water sports. Some also offer massages. At the northern tip of the beach, there is a Señor Frogs .

You should have in mind that Mahahual is a very, very laid back sort of beach and that no one is in a rush to offer any service in this small village. Cruise tip: join the flow (or lack of) and look at leisure for whatever you feel like doing with no pressure.

Are you looking for the top shore excursions and activities when your cruise ship berths in Costa Maya? My guide has top recommendations and tips to help you maximize your time in port. Whether you want to relax on the beach, explore ancient ruins, or shop for souvenirs, this article has you covered.

So please read on to learn how to plan your time in the beautiful port city of Costa Maya.

Overview of Costa Maya Cruise Port (Puerto Costa Maya)

Costa Maya port Mexico

Nestled in Quintana Roo on Mexico’s Eastern coast, Costa Maya is the perfect relaxation spot for cruise passengers. The resort has beautiful white-sand beaches, swimming pools, an aviary, and a marine park with dolphins. For culture buffs, Mayan ruins from this ancient civilization are relatively close. There are also snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities.

One of the charms of Costa Maya is its relatively undeveloped landscape. Unlike more commercialized destinations, there are no towering high-rises here. The heart of this tranquility is Mahahual, a small village enveloped by lush jungle. This fishing village, known for its laid-back vibe and picturesque beaches, provides a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of typical tourist areas. Designed for cruise visitors, Costa Maya’s port is a gateway to exploring natural beauty and Mayan ruins, ensuring a memorable experience.

Where is the Costa Maya Cruise Port?

Costa Maya is a popular cruise port in Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula and the coast of the Caribbean Sea. The Caribbean cruise port is located 4 miles (6.4 km) or a 10-minute drive from the quaint fishing town of Mahahual, which has just under 1,000 inhabitants. It’s one of the busiest cruise ports in the area.

Arriving at Costa Maya Cruise Port

Costa Maya pier Mexico

Costa Maya cruise terminal features a T-shaped pier that can accommodate up to four cruise ships simultaneously. The walk from the pier to the terminal building is lengthy. However, there is a complimentary trolley service available for those who prefer not to walk. Unfortunately, many passengers report experiencing delays in catching the trolley, especially when three or more ships are docked at the port.

You cannot miss the spectacular cruise terminal building with its stunning Mayan replica door at the pier’s end. Inside the terminal, you’ll find ATMs, information kiosks, a shuttle bus to Mahahual, golf carts, and taxis. There is also the Tour Dispatch area and opportunities to book last-minute shore excursions.

Transport Around Costa Maya

Outside the cruise terminal are various transport options. If you want to spend the day at the beach in Mahahual, you can take a taxi, golf cart, or shuttle bus. The large car park at the terminal building also has buses for shore excursions.

Although you can hire a car, it’s not worth it as taxis are cheap, and booking a shore excursion is the best way to get to the Mayan ruins.

Most cruise passengers find walking the easiest way to get around the cruise port area. However, it’s best to use another form of transport to explore the surrounding area.

Golf carts in Costa Maya are one of the most fun and unique ways to explore the local village. You can hire the carts for $60 to $75 for the day. This transport mode offers a quick journey to Mahahual, allowing you to explore its shops, beautiful scenery, and vibrant atmosphere. You can also rent the carts per hour.

It is best to book in advance to guarantee a cart’s rental. However, if you take the shuttle bus or taxi to Mahahual, you will find plenty of places to rent a golf cart.

Several local taxi operators provide quick and cheap travel to Mahahual. Taxis from the cruise terminal offer set fares to the village costing $4. Prices are per person and are the same price as the shuttle bus. There are also plenty of taxis in Mahahual. All you must do is flag one down to get back to the cruise ship.

Agreeing on the taxi fare with the driver beforehand is always advisable.

The shuttle bus from outside the terminal building is a popular way to get to Mahahual Village and spend a port day near the terminal. The bus costs $4 per person each way.

Electric bikes

Electric bikes are another popular mode of transportation in Costa Maya. They provide a fun and eco-friendly way to explore the area without walking long distances or having the hassle of renting a golf cart. You can rent bikes from various vendors in the cruise port area and Mahahual village.

You’ll find a convenient pickup and drop-off point near the cruise port. The cost is usually $20 to $25 for the entire day. It’s best to book the bike beforehand to get the most out of the day. This way, you are guaranteed a bike, giving you the freedom to ride along the promenade (Malecon), visit shops, and relax on the beach.

Excursion transportation

Arranging a shore excursion is necessary to explore Mayan ruins, ancient civilizations, beach resorts, or the spectacular Seven Color Lagoon. You can either book in advance or find a last-minute excursion with one of the on-site tour operators.

catamaran excursion Costa Maya

Sailing on a catamaran is one of the most popular activities when spending a day in Costa Maya. Many day excursions include food, drink, and a choice of snacks or food.

The Caribbean coast of Mexico is renowned for its exceptional diving and snorkeling opportunities, largely due to the stunning beauty of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. This reef is the second-largest barrier reef system in the world and a haven for a diverse array of marine life. Snorkeling adventures along this barrier reef allow you to get up close with a wide variety of tropical marine life, such as snappers, jacks, angelfish, and queen triggerfish. You can book the shore excursions through your cruise line or with a local tour operator outside the terminal building.

Spending a few hours in a glass-bottom boat is a fantastic way to appreciate the crystal-clear waters in the Caribbean. The boat excursions let you see an exotic range of tropical marine life without getting wet. Have fun on an ATV adventure excursion in Costa Maya

ATV riding Costa Maya

Why not explore the Costa Maya’s jungle and beaches on an ATV? An ATV adventure excursion is a great way to see the sights and experience the thrill of off-roading through rugged terrain. You get to drive through beautiful mangroves, drive on stunning beaches, and stop off at sightseeing spots along the way.

The best ATV shore excursions include fajitas or tacos, Mexican beers or non-alcoholic cold drinks, and time at the Costa Maya beach. The best thing is that the start-off point and return destination are only a five-minute taxi ride from the cruise port.

Sightseeing and Cultural Excursions in Costa Maya

Costa Maya, located on the Caribbean coast in Mexico, is famous for more than its stunning white sand beaches. It’s full of vibrant Mexican culture and rich history.  Many shore excursions occur in spectacular Mayan ruins that showcase an ancient civilization. Also, the famous Bacalar Lagoon is an hour’s drive from the cruise port.

Here are some of the best things to do in and around Costa Maya during your cruise day.

Visit Mahahual

Mahahual Costa Maya

One of the highlights of the Costa Maya cruise port is exploring the charming fishing village of Mahahual. You will enjoy strolling along the promenade (Malecon), browsing the colorful shops, and soaking in the village’s laid-back atmosphere. You can then stop off in one of the many beach bars to enjoy Mexican street food and authentic cocktails.

Many cruise visitors walk along the Malecon to the lighthouse at the village’s north end.

Mahahual Lighthouse (Faro de Mahahual)

Mahahual Lighthouse (Faro de Mahahual)

Located at the start of the promenade in Mahahual is the Mahahual Lighthouse. This historic landmark offers stunning views of the Caribbean Sea and surrounding area. For a small admission fee, you can tour the lighthouse and learn about its history and role in protecting sailors at sea.

Fun fact: The lighthouse is the most southerly lighthouse on Mexico’s Caribbean coast.

Take an excursion to historical Mayan ruins

A 50-minute drive from Costa Maya are some of Mexico’s most stunning archaeological sites—the Chacchoben Mayan Ruins. Visit these places for a fascinating cultural experience and learn about Mayan civilization.

Plenty of tour operators offer shore excursions to these archaeological wonders. What sets this experience apart is the opportunity to explore these Mayan ruins with significantly fewer visitors compared to more crowded Mayan sites near Cancun, such as Chichen Itza or Tulum, offering a more serene and personal encounter with history.

Chacchoben Mayan ruins

Chacchoben Mayan ruins

The Chacchoben Mayan ruins are the most accessible archaeological site from the cruise port.

The ruins at Chacchoben are a vast Mayan settlement dating from 200 BC. The ruins include four grand temples or pyramids, including the Temple of the Vessels and Gran Basamento. One of the temples is still overgrown with vegetation. You can climb the ancient pyramids and wonder at the Mayans’ architectural skills.

The lush tropical rainforests surrounding the Chacchoben Mayan ruins are just as stunning. As you walk the circular path in the forest, you may encounter spider monkeys, armadillos, deer, and howler monkeys.

This day trip includes a guided tour and may also include a visit to the nearby Seven Color Lagoon. You should plan at least four hours to explore the ruins.

Quintana Roo is also home to other ruins from the Mayan civilization. However, these are five-hour round trips, and it’s doubtful you will have time to take in these archaeological wonders. Here’s a short description of the ruins:

Dzibanche ruins: Located in the southern part of Quintana Roo, the Dzibanche ruins feature several prominent pyramids—the Cormoranes pyramid and the K’inich Na’ Pyramid. There is also the well-known Temple of the Lintels. Tourists rarely visit the site, but it offers a more tranquil and immersive experience for visitors, and anyone interested in ancient civilizations.

Dzibanche ruins

Kohunlich ruins: The ruins at Kohunlich are mainly unexcavated, but you can visit the ruins of several temples on the expansive site. The archaeological ruins show evidence of citadels, courtyards, pyramids, and plazas. There was also a water collection and drainage system.

Kohunlich ruins

Bacalar Lagoon

Bacalar Seven Color Lagoon

Also called the Lake of Seven Colors, the Bacalar Lagoon is a stunning shore excursion when visiting Costa Maya. The beautiful lagoon is located about an hour’s drive from the cruise port. It offers a serene and peaceful atmosphere, making it a great place to spend the day.

The best way to visit the Bacalar Lagoon is to book a shore excursion beforehand. The stunning inland freshwater lagoon is famous for its crystal-clear waters, which showcase seven shades of blue. You can go swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, or paddleboarding, which provides one of the most peaceful and tranquil ways to immerse yourself in the lagoon’s beauty.

It’s important to note that, due to the distance and range of activities on offer, a visit to the Bacalar Lagoon means you won’t have time to explore Mahahual near the cruise port.

Here are other excursions you can plan while spending the day in the Bacalar Lagoon area.

Boat, pontoon, or catamaran tours are available around the lagoon to explore its various cenotes and mangroves. These water excursions last one to two hours and may include food and drinks.

Swim in Cenote Azul

The lagoon is home to several cenotes—natural, water-filled sinkholes. Cenote Azul is 300 ft. (91 m) deep, giving it a deep blue color. Due to its depth, it’s also a popular location for scuba diving. At Cenote Azul, you can relax on the surrounding wooden swings and take Insta-worthy photos.

Discover stromatolites

Stromatolites Bacalar Lagoon

The natural wonders of Bacalar Lagoon continue when you find stromatolites. These fossilized structures are over 3.5 billion years old, making them the oldest living lifeforms on the planet. The lagoon is one of the few places on Earth where you can find them.

Bacalar Fort

Bacalar Fort

Known as Fuerte de San Felipe, Bacalar Fort is a historic fort near the lagoon. Built in the 18th century, the fortress protected the town from pirate attacks. Guided tours can help you learn more about its history. Additionally, its position at the edge of the freshwater lake means you get spectacular views over the lagoon and surrounding forests.

Explore downtown Bacalar

Bacalar Mexico

Downtown Bacalar boasts a charming, quaint atmosphere, featuring colorful buildings, local shops, and restaurants serving delicious cuisine.

You can stroll through the Bacalar’s streets to admire the architecture, shop for souvenirs, and sample traditional Mexican cuisine. Don’t forget to try the local specialty—marquesitas. This dessert, native to Yucatan, is a sweet crepe filled with Edam cheese, chocolate, cajeta, or jam.

Which cruise lines dock in Puerto Costa Maya?

Costa Maya dock

The Costa Maya cruise port is one of the most frequented in the Western Caribbean, with over 500 cruise ships docking in a season. A wide range of cruise lines include Puerto Costa Maya in their Caribbean itineraries, among them Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Holland America, and Princess Cruises. In addition to these, many other major cruise lines also make stops at this vibrant port, offering travelers diverse options for exploring the rich culture, stunning landscapes, and historical sites of the area.

Is there free Wi-Fi in the Costa Maya cruise port?

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal and cruise port area. In Mahahual, many cafes and restaurants offer free Wi-Fi if you need to upload your cruise holiday snaps. You are best to log on to an internet hotspot in the village rather than paying the hefty charges on the ship if you need to upload photos.

Is Costa Maya Cruise Port safe for travelers to walk around?

The cruise port in Costa Maya is safe for cruise passengers. The locals are generally friendly; although some sellers can be pushy. However, politely saying no once or twice is usually enough to deter them. As with any unfamiliar place, exercising caution and being aware of your surroundings is always good advice.

Can I walk to the beach from the Costa Maya cruise port?

Walking to the Costa Maya beaches in Mahahual from the cruise port is possible. However, it takes 40 minutes to walk the 2 miles (3.2 km) to the village. Therefore, most cruise passengers take a motorized form of transport, which only takes 10 minutes. And with the taxi fare only $4 per person, it’s worth getting the taxi or shuttle bus—which also costs $4.

What’s the closest beach to Costa Maya cruise port?

Mahahual Beach is the closest beach to the cruise port area in Costa Maya. From the north end of the village, you can walk just over a mile from the lighthouse (Faro de Mahahual) along the beautiful beach or the Malecon (promenade). You can find various beach facilities, cafes, and beachfront bars along the walk.

What language is spoken in Costa Maya?

Spanish is the official language of Mexico and the primary language spoken in Costa Maya. However, most locals working in bars, cafes, restaurants, and souvenir shops also speak English. It’s always a good idea to learn some basic phrases in Spanish.

Do cruise ships dock, or is Costa Maya a tender port?

Cruise ships can dock simultaneously at Costa Maya. The purposely built cruise port has a T-shaped pier. Therefore, cruise ships do not tender at the port. It’s good to note that the pier’s length is 1,115 feet or 0.2 miles (340 m). However, a free trolley can take you to the cruise terminal.

How many ships can dock at Costa Maya?

The pier at Costa Maya has berths for up to four large cruise ships.

Can you use US dollars in Costa Maya, Mexico?

You can use US dollars throughout your stay in Costa Maya, even though the Mexican Peso (MXN) is the local currency. It is important to note that the peso also uses the $ sign. Therefore, always check if the listed prices are MXN (sometimes, MX or Mex$) or US dollars.

Be aware that although most vendors accept US dollars, they may give you change in pesos. So, it’s always worth checking beforehand what type of change you’ll get.

One peso (1 MXN) is roughly the equivalent of 5 cents (USD).

What is the best time to visit Costa Maya?

The best time to visit Costa Maya is during the dry season , typically from November to April. This period offers pleasant weather with minimal rainfall, making it ideal for enjoying outdoor activities and exploring the region’s attractions. Summer in the Caribbean is characterized by high humidity and temperatures in the low 90s Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius).

Try to avoid the hurricane season , which runs from June 1 through November. You may get better deals on Caribbean cruises. But your port schedule may be disrupted due to high winds or heavy rain.

Is it OK to haggle with local vendors?

Haggling is common in many parts of Mexico, including popular tourist destinations like Costa Maya. However, always do this respectfully and politely. It’s also good to avoid allowing vendors to put items in your hands to hold. It’s been heard that some unscrupulous sellers refuse to take the item back and insist you pay for it.

Does Costa Maya have a seaweed (sargassum) problem?

Like other Caribbean coastal regions, seaweed can occasionally accumulate on beaches. Seaweed season in Costa Maya is typically late spring through summer. However, local authorities regularly remove sargassum to keep the beaches clean for visitors.

There is also an anti-sargassum barrier to help reduce the amount of seaweed in the shallow waters beside the seashore.

However, the severity of the seaweed problem can fluctuate due to weather patterns and ocean currents. Before planning your visit, it’s advisable to check with recent traveler reviews or local sources for the most up-to-date information on seaweed conditions.

  • I took my first cruise on one of the world's largest ships, Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas .
  • Mistakes like choosing a room at the ship's front and forgetting earplugs made it less enjoyable.
  • I also regret taking my first cruise by myself and sailing for seven nights.

I'd traveled by car , bus, train , and plane , but boats of any kind were completely new to me until April 2022, when I went on my first cruise to the Caribbean.

I embarked on a seven-night voyage on one of the world's largest cruise ships, Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas . We sailed to Roatán, Honduras ; Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico; and Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas.

While it felt surreal to be on such a large vessel in the middle of the ocean, I made some mistakes that made my trip more expensive and less enjoyable than it could have been. Here's what I'll do differently next time.

Booking a seven-night trip for my first cruise experience was an ambitious decision that made me feel overwhelmed.

Cruises can be as short as two nights or as long as several months . When booking my cruise, I thought one week would be a good amount of time to get used to the lifestyle.

While initially in awe of the ship and the journey ahead, I struggled with sleep and motion sickness every day. I was grateful to be out in the ocean, but by the fourth day, I felt ready to go home and overwhelmed by the remaining time I had on the ship.

Since cruising was a new form of vacation and transportation for me, I wish I had booked a shorter trip for the first time.

<p>The length of the trip would have been more bearable if I had a friend with me, in my opinion. </p><p>While there were many social activities and friendly cruisers who loved to chat with random strangers like me, I still found myself feeling lonely on the ship. I took this cruise by myself, but if I were to do it again, I'd travel with someone else.

The length of the trip would have been more bearable if I hadn't traveled solo .

While there were many social activities and friendly cruisers who loved chatting with random strangers like me, I still felt lonely on the ship. I longed to talk with someone who knew me or share my experiences in new places with a loved one. Being surrounded by so many families and groups of friends made me wish I could be with mine.

When I cruise again, I'll bring a crew.

<p>For $2,000, I slept in a 179-square-foot <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/royal-caribbean-wonder-of-seas-cruise-cabin-photos-2022-4">stateroom</a> on deck eight. I'm prone to motion sickness, and I unknowingly booked a room where movement on the ship felt the strongest.

For $2,000, I slept in a 179-square-foot stateroom on deck eight. My cabin had a private bathroom, a king-size bed, and an ocean view.

It was a mid-tier room — a step above interior staterooms with no window, a step below staterooms with a balcony, and two steps below a suite. I quickly realized this was the wrong room to book.

Since it was at the very front of deck eight, I felt constant motion in my room. This made sense to me after talking to seasoned cruisers on the ship, several of whom told me that the front of the ship was one of the worst places to be for feeling motion. They said that higher decks in the middle of the ship feel calmer and more stable.

Some nights were rockier than others. On the roughest nights, I heard and felt a similar sensation to thunder beneath me every few minutes. Loud thumps and heavy vibrations in my room sounded like large pieces of furniture falling down. The first night this happened, I feared the worst, but over time, I realized that this was a normal aspect of cruising — but one I would likely never get used to.

Next time, I'd choose a room in the middle of the ship.

<p>Because I heard sounds that reminded me of thunder every few minutes some nights, it was nearly impossible for me to sleep. </p><p>If I had earplugs with me, I may have been able to rest more during my trip. One night, it was so loud that I decided to sleep with my earbuds in, but since I sleep on my side, I woke up with one earbud painfully pushed too far into my ear.</p>

If I had remembered to bring earplugs, I might have gotten more sleep.

Because I heard sounds that reminded me of thunder every few minutes some nights, it was nearly impossible for me to sleep.

If I had earplugs with me, I may have been able to rest more during my trip. One night, it was so loud that I decided to sleep with my earbuds in, but since I sleep on my side, I woke up with one earbud painfully pushed too far into my ear.

<p>Cash is a must on cruises, I learned. While you can tip the cruise ship members with a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-into-chase-sapphire-airport-lounge-2024-2">credit card</a> at the end of your trip, you need cash to tip the bus drivers and tour guides during excursions at the ports.</p><p>There are ATMs on the ship, but they have withdrawal fees, <a href="https://www.royalcaribbean.com/faq/questions/onboard-atm-cash-service" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">according to the Royal Caribbean website</a>.</p>

I forgot to bring cash, which was essential for tipping bus drivers and tour guides during excursions.

There are ATMs on the ship, but they have withdrawal fees, according to the Royal Caribbean website .

<p>I like to be comfy, so I was dreading formal nights going into this cruise. </p><p>I brought one fancy dress with me to wear anytime I needed, but I learned after the first formal night, that the dress code wasn't strictly enforced. People wore a range of outfits from evening gowns to t-shirts. </p><p>For the rest of the trip, I relaxed my interpretation of the dress code, too. </p>

I regret wasting space in my suitcase on dresses for formal nights since dress codes were not enforced.

I hate dressing formally, but I knew cruises had formal nights going into the trip, so I brought one nice dress with me to wear whenever I needed it. However, after the first formal night, I learned that the dress code wasn't strictly enforced. People wore a variety of outfits, from evening gowns to T-shirts.

I relaxed my look on the other two formal nights but felt like I wasted the limited space in my suitcase with the dress. Next time, I won't bring it with me.

I missed some shows because I didn't make reservations for the week as soon as I boarded the ship.

The cruise ship was full of activities and restaurants that I could go to, but some restaurants, like the specialty ones, as well as all the shows on board, required reservations that I made through the Royal Caribbean app.

I found that it was often hard to get day-of reservations for many shows I wanted to attend. Waiting until the last minute to plan for these events was a mistake.

For example, the circus-like acrobatic water show in the AquaTheater seemed to be the most popular and hardest reservation to get. I tried to get one on the day of the event but couldn't find any availability until a show two nights later.

Next time, I'll make all my show reservations as soon as possible.

<p>One of the unique things about cruising is that most meals, snacks, and drinks are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/belize-resort-changed-opinion-on-all-inclusive-stays-2024-2">all-inclusive</a> as part of the cruise rate.</p><p>But on large ships like Wonder of the Seas, more than a dozen restaurants with specialty offerings, like sushi, are not included and incur additional charges, either as a one-time fee or by the dish.</p><p>While show reservations aren't available until you board the ship, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/royal-caribbean-wonder-of-the-seas-best-restaurants-2022-5">specialty restaurants</a> can be reserved as soon as you book your trip. Next time, I'll save money and eat more included meals.</p>

Before my trip, I reserved all specialty restaurants, but I wish I hadn't booked so many once I realized the included restaurants were delicious and diverse.

One of the unique things about cruising is that most meals, snacks, and drinks are all-inclusive as part of the cruise rate.

But on large ships like Wonder of the Seas, more than a dozen restaurants with specialty offerings, like sushi, are not included and incur additional charges, either as a one-time fee or by the dish.

While show reservations aren't available until you board the ship, specialty restaurants can be reserved as soon as you book your trip. I booked specialty restaurants for nearly every night of the cruise.

I was surprised that some of my most delicious and satisfying meals were in the restaurants included for guests. There were a handful of buffets with different types of food, and the main dining room served a three-course meal with varying menu items each night.

Every single one of my cravings was satisfied by these complimentary options. One of the best meals I had was in the main dining room.

Since I booked so many specialty restaurants, I didn't have time to try all the buffets or eat in the main dining room more than once. Next time, I'll save money and eat more included meals.

<p>At each port stop, guests have the option of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/holland-america-have-it-all-package-worth-it-review-2024">booking excursions through the cruise line</a> for an additional cost. At two of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/royal-caribbean-wonder-of-the-seas-cruise-best-western-ports-2022-5">port stops</a>, Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico, I booked excursions that included a few hours of beach time, where guests got access to a beach club with lounge chairs.</p><p>In Cozumel, I went to a beach club in Tulum after a long tour of Mayan ruins. Since I felt like I got my beach fix the day before, I found myself wishing I could spend the time exploring more of the island.</p><p>Next time, I'll book only one excursion with beach time. </p>

At the ports, I booked two excursions with beach stops and felt like I wasted time.

At each port stop, guests have the option of booking excursions through the cruise line for an additional cost. These include tours and activities like hiking or zip-lining. At two of the port stops , Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico, I booked excursions that included a few hours of beach time, where guests got access to a beach club with lounge chairs.

In Cozumel, I went to a beach club in Tulum after a long tour of Mayan ruins. It was nice to relax and enjoy some of the clearest ocean water I had ever seen.

The next day in Costa Maya, I went on a very brief tour of the island before going to the beach. Since I felt like I got my beach fix the day before, I found myself wishing I could spend the time exploring more of the island.

Next time, I'll book only one excursion with beach time.

<p>At the end of the cruise, passengers disembarked in the morning upon returning to port. For the end of my cruise, I made the mistake of booking a night flight, which left me in the airport for 14 hours.

At the end of the cruise, passengers disembarked in the morning upon returning to port. But when booking my cruise , I learned that the scheduled port arrival time wasn't the exact time I'd be off the ship.

As Business Insider previously reported, a cruise ship's scheduled arrival time is when the ship docks at the port. Before passengers can get off, there's an inspection that can take "anywhere between 20 minutes to an hour or more," the article says.

To be safe, I booked a night flight , since I'd rather wait at the airport all day than miss my flight home.

I definitely overdid it. I arrived at the airport at 9 a.m. for my 9 p.m. flight, which ended up being delayed two hours.

Next time, to avoid spending 14 hours in an airport, I'll book an afternoon flight for the end of my cruise.

<p>I don't think cruising is my preferred form of travel, but a lot of these mistakes had a huge influence on my experience. </p>

Ultimately, I left the ship thinking that cruises were cool but not for me. But I might have had a different conclusion if I hadn't made these mistakes.

I don't think cruising is my preferred form of travel, but a lot of these mistakes had a huge influence on my experience.
