Nuggets visit Spurs, look to pull closer to West crown

The Denver Nuggets will look to move closer to securing the top seed in the West when they travel to San Antonio to battle the short-handed Spurs on Friday in the penultimate game of the regular season for both teams.

Share Video

The Nuggets roll into the Alamo City after a rollicking 116-107 home win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday that allowed Denver (56-24) to take sole possession of first place in the Western Conference.

Two-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic went 16 of 20 from the floor and scored 24 of his game-high 41 points in the second half in Wednesday's win. He added 11 rebounds, seven assists and three steals for the Nuggets, who can clinch the West crown with wins in San Antonio on Friday and in Memphis in Sunday.

Denver also got 20 points from a banged-up Jamal Murray while Michael Porter Jr. had 18.

Minnesota is tied with Oklahoma City at one game behind Denver in the West standings and holds the tiebreaker with the Nuggets. That means Denver had no room for error over the last two games.

"I have a feeling that we're probably going to see (Minnesota) again in the playoffs," Denver coach Michael Malone said. "It will be a hell of a series because they're a very good team. They're well-coached and they have a lot of talent over there."

The Nuggets trailed by as many as seven points before finishing the third period on a 9-1 run that produced an 83-80 lead heading into the final 12 minutes. That's when Denver flexed its muscle and finished with a flurry.

The Spurs return home for their final two games after a 127-89 loss at Oklahoma City on Wednesday. San Antonio played without erstwhile rookie of the year candidate Victor Wembanyama, who sat out the second game of a road back-to-back to manage a right ankle injury.

Zach Collins scored 20 points to lead the Spurs in Wednesday's defeat, which guaranteed its second straight 60-loss campaign and fourth in franchise history. San Antonio scored only 11 points in a horrid first quarter and shot a season-low 33.3 percent (32 of 96) from the floor in the setback.

Sidy Cissoko added a career-high 14 points for the Spurs in Wednesday's loss while RaiQuan Gray and Tre Jones scored 13 each. Both Cissoko and Gray spent the entire season in the G-League before this week.

"Doesn't matter what's going on on the court, it's about them executing -- how to play not just with each other, but improving their individual games," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said of his inexperienced players. "They're all young guys trying to make a career. So all the minutes of that experience adds up over time."

The Spurs (20-60) have been playing without starters Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan and key reserve Keldon Johnson because of injuries.

San Antonio has to win one of its final two games to avoid tying its worst full season record in franchise history as set in 1997 (20-62). Getting that done against the Nuggets will be difficult, but the Spurs finish the season against league doormat Detroit, one of two teams (with Washington) that's played worse than San Antonio in 2023-24.

Moscow guide&photo! Feel Putin vibes and explore the enigmatic Russian soul through history ...

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.

What to Know About Biden’s New Student Debt Relief Plan

The proposal would affect nearly 30 million people and would target groups that have had hardships in repaying their loans.

Biden Announces New Plan for Student Debt Relief

President biden announced a large-scale effort to help pay off federal student loans for more than 20 million borrowers..

Today, I’m proud to announce five major actions to continue to relieve student debt for more than 30 million Americans since I started my administration. And starting this fall, we plan to deliver up to $20,000 in interest relief to over 20 million borrowers and full forgiveness for millions more. [applause] I will never stop to deliver student debt relief and hardworking Americans. And it’s only in the interest of America that we do it. And again, it’s for the good of our economy that’s growing stronger and stronger, and it is, by freeing millions of Americans from this crushing debt of student debt. It means they can finally get on with their lives instead of being put — their lives being put on hold.

By Erica L. Green

Reporting from Washington

President Biden released details on Monday of his new student loan debt forgiveness plan for nearly 30 million borrowers.

The proposal still needs to be finalized and will have to withstand expected legal challenges, like the ones that doomed Mr. Biden’s first attempt to wipe out student debt on a large scale last year.

Biden administration officials said they could begin handing out some of the debt relief — including the canceling of up to $20,000 in interest — as soon as this fall if the new effort moves forward after the required, monthslong comment period.

Here’s what is known so far about the program:

Who would benefit from the new plan?

The plan would reduce payments for 25 million borrowers and erase all debt for more than four million Americans. Altogether, 10 million borrowers would see debt relief of $5,000 or more, officials said.

The groups affected include:

— Borrowers whose loan balances have ballooned because of interest would have up to $20,000 of their interest balance canceled. The plan would waive the entire interest balance for borrowers considered “low- and middle-income” who are enrolled in the administration’s income-driven repayment plans.

The interest forgiveness would be a one-time benefit, but would be the largest relief valve in the plan. The administration estimates that of the 25 million borrowers that could see relief under this waiver, 23 million would see their entire interest balance wiped out.

— Borrowers who are eligible for, but have not yet applied for, loan forgiveness under existing programs like Public Service Loan Forgiveness or the administration’s new repayment program, called SAVE, would have their debts automatically canceled.

— Borrowers with undergraduate student debt who started repaying their loans more than 20 years ago, and graduate students who started paying their debt 25 or more years ago, would have their debts canceled.

— Borrowers who enrolled in programs or colleges that lost federal funding because they cheated or defrauded students would have their debts waived. Students who attended institutions or programs that left them with mounds of debt but bleak earning or job prospects would also be eligible for relief.

— Borrowers who are experiencing “hardship” paying back their loans because of medical or child care costs would also be eligible for some type of relief. The administration has not yet determined how these borrowers would be identified, but is considering automatic forgiveness for those at risk of defaulting.

How is this different from the last plan?

Mr. Biden initially tried to grant $400 billion in debt relief for 40 million borrowers by using the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students Act of 2003, or HEROES Act, which the administration argued allowed the government to waive student debt during a national emergency like the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Supreme Court blocked that move , saying that Mr. Biden had exceeded his authority.

The new plan would forgive some or all loan debt for nearly 30 million borrowers under the Higher Education Act, the federal law that regulates student loan and grant programs. By targeting specific groups of borrowers — instead of offering broad loan forgiveness — the administration believes it can act within the narrower confines of that law.

The Biden administration said lawyers for the White House and the Education Department studied last year’s Supreme Court ruling and designed the new program to make sure it did not violate the principles laid out by the justices.

Still, there could be questions about whether the borrowers under the latest plan would be considered “limited,” as the Supreme Court said the Higher Education Act requires, or whether the administration again overstepped its authority.

What’s the timeline?

The new plan still needs to be published in the Federal Register, which then will start a monthslong public comment period. Administration officials have said they hoped some of the provisions would begin going into effect in “early fall.”

That could leave the debt relief plan unresolved as voters go to the polls in November to choose between Mr. Biden and former President Donald J. Trump.

But Biden campaign officials hope the latest effort will help rally voters who were sorely disappointed by the Supreme Court’s decision last year.

2026 defensive end JJ Finch

Notre Dame Made A Strong First Impression On Indiana Pass Rusher JJ Finch

Notre Dame impressed 2026 defensive end JJ Finch during his recent visit to campus

  • Author: Ryan Roberts
  • Publish date: Apr 13, 2024

In this story:

Notre Dame certainly wants to make sure it is keeping impact in-state talent from leaving the Hoosier State. One player the Irish are hoping to keep in-state in the 2026 class is Indianapolis (Ind.) Warren Central pass rusher Jerimy “JJ” Finch , who was one of a small group of local standouts offered during the Pot of Gold offer push a few weeks ago on St. Patrick’s Day.

This week, Finch made the trip to Notre Dame. He spent the day checking out the campus and practice, coming away impressed with the energy around the program.

"It was a great visit,” Finch told Irish Breakdown. "Meeting with the coaches and staff one on one was great. It helps to be able to develop relationships with them as individuals. The players and coaches seemed to have good relationships between them."

A part of this trip was hearing the pitch from the Irish staff. n film, Finch is a versatile defender who moves all around the defensive line for Warren Central. That ability to line up everywhere, and impact the game, is something Notre Dame is very intrigued about.

"They see me as a versatile athlete who can move around in the defense as needed,” said Finch. "I can be used all over the defensive line potentially.”

Following the visit, Finch was incredibly impressed by everything that the Irish could provide. There are also tentative plans for Finch to return this weekend again to South Bend, which would be huge for their recruiting momentum. The Indiana star is not shy about his high opinion of the program so far.

“Notre Dame is high on my list,” he explained. “They showed me that I can come in and fit right in with the program. Notre Dame is not like other programs or universities .... they're a family.”

Recruiting is just beginning to heat up for Finch. He currently holds offers from the Fighting Irish, Louisville Indiana, Marshall, Toledo, Central Michigan, Western Michigan and Jackson State. That number promises to increase very quickly.

The 6-3, 240-pound defender put together a really impressive sophomore season for Warren Central. As a part of a deep and talented pass rush, Finch collected 41 total tackles, 14 tackles for loss and three sacks. Finch also forced two fumbles, recovered another, broke up a pass and blocked a kick on the season.

Harvard among more than a dozen schools to receive failing grade on ADL's Campus Antisemitism Report Card

Memorial Church on the Harvard University campus in Cambridge, Mass.

The Anti-Defamation League gave Harvard University and 12 other schools failing grades for policies to protect Jewish students from antisemitism on campus.

The ADL said it selected 85 of the top national and liberal arts colleges for assessment this year and chose those with the highest Jewish student populations. It assigned grades from A through F in a Campus Antisemitism Report Card  released Thursday.

"ADL produced this Report Card during a time of incredible volatility on college campuses," the organization said on its website . "It takes the temperature at a moment in time and provides a roadmap for improving campus climate."

Harvard, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University and the University of Virginia were among the schools to receive a letter grade of "F."

Since Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7,  numerous incidents of antisemitism have been reported at U.S. schools , with some resulting in arrests.

In November, the Education Department announced an investigation  into a half-dozen colleges and universities and a local school district for alleged antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents. It opened a separate probe into Harvard after a complaint alleged the Ivy League school discriminated against Jewish and Israeli students when it failed to respond to alleged incidents of harassment, The Boston Globe reported .

In December, Harvard President Claudine Gay and two other elite university presidents  testified  before the House Education Committee about campus antisemitism. Gay drew heated criticism for appearing to sidestep the issue during her testimony, and she announced her resignation in January .

A spokesperson for Harvard said: "Antisemitism has no place in the Harvard community. We remain steadfast in our commitment to combating antisemitism and hate, in whatever form it manifests itself."

In March, the Ivy League shared its ongoing efforts to combat antisemitism with the House Education and Workforce Committee. Over the last several months, the school has taken steps to strengthen campus security, clarify policies, increase ways to report harassment and has organized community spaces where Jewish and Israeli students can connect.

MIT, Princeton University and the University of Virginia did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The ADL said it worked with a panel of experts to come up with a list of 21 criteria for assessment that was divided into three broad groups: administrative action and policies, incidents on campus and Jewish student life on campus.

It provided each school with a questionnaire and ultimately received responses from 84% of the campuses it assessed. ADL also conducted research to determine which campuses fulfilled the criteria and looked at public information, including high-profile investigations.

Twenty-four schools received "D's," 29 got "C's" and 17 received "B's." Only two schools — Brandeis University in Massachusetts and Elon University in North Carolina — received "A's."

"Every campus should get an A — that’s not grade inflation, that’s the minimum that every group on every campus expects," ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said in a statement . "Like all students, Jewish students deserve to feel safe and supported on campus. They deserve a learning environment free from antisemitism and hate. But that hasn’t been the experience with antisemitism running rampant on campus since even before October 7."

The ADL noted that Brandeis University was the first private university to revoke its recognition of its Students for Justice in Palestine chapter and quickly deemed phrases including "From the River to the Sea" as hate speech.

Elon University was praised for encouraging the community to learn more about the Oct. 7 attack and hosting an event attended by more than 200 students and faculty and staff members.

"Creating a positive campus climate for civic engagement and constructive dialogue is a critical component of Elon’s mission and its commitment to fostering a collaborative and productive learning environment," Jon Dooley, Elon's vice president for student life, said in a statement.

Brandeis President Ron Liebowitz noted that the school was founded by the Jewish community “to counter the antisemitism and quotas on Jewish participation in higher education.”

“From its beginning, Brandeis has been open to all qualified individuals and has opposed hate toward other groups; our founders knew that hate often begins but rarely ends at antisemitism. We are proud that the ADL recognizes our continued support for our Jewish students, faculty and staff at a time when some campuses are struggling to protect those members of their community,” Liebowitz continued.

Other campuses still have work to do, Greenblatt said.

"As I travel the country, I’m constantly hearing from Jewish families agonizing over where they will send their kids to college," he said.

"School leadership must make serious changes to support Jewish communities on their campus; we expect nothing less. Along with the Report Card, we’re providing guidelines and resources for how schools can improve campus climate and therefore improve their grades, and we look forward to working with them and other partners to achieve that reasonable goal.”
