cruise in finland

There’s so much to discover in Helsinki, the “daughter of the Baltic” —  and the best way to do it is from the water on a Northern Europe cruise with Holland America Line. Finland’s capital is guarded by Suomenlinna, a UNESCO-designated fortress that straddles a series of bridge-linked islets. You can pedal along the waterfront to Sibelius Park, visit the unique Temppeliaukio Rock Church, taste reindeer sausage in the restored market hall, or head out to the quaint wooden town of Porvoo.

Helsinki Cruise Port Guide

Helsinki feels like a mix of colorful St. Petersburg, Russia with sleek, Scandinavian design. On a Scandinavian cruise , perhaps there’s no city more enigmatic than Helsinki, with its cultural Baltic warmth and deeply cold Finnish winters. As the capital of Finland, Helsinki holds up as an art and culture hub thanks to museums like the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, the Design Museum, or the National Museum of Finland. Many Finnish citizens go to the sauna several times a week, and if it’s rejuvenation you’re after, spas like Kotiharjun Sauna or Löyly are a must-try experience.

Helsinki packs in fun for all ages, like at the local amusement part Linnanmaki, or the zoo at Korkeasaari. The Baltic Sea is well within reach on multiple sides of the archipelago, making it easy to dip into the water at Hietaniemi Beach or just feel a sea breeze on your face on a summer evening as you enjoy dinner on the waterfront. Before you go, check out the concert schedule at the Musiikkitalo, a music center that often features classical performances that will amaze you. When it comes to cruises to Helsinki, you’ll have to make up your own mind about this quirky city.

Hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to it every year to see works by over 8,000 contemporary artists.

Because Finnish design is so recognizable all over the world, it makes sense that Helsinki would pay a stunning tribute to the role of design in Finland and other parts of the world at the Design Museum. It’s a primer on Finnish culture and a great way to dip your toes into truly beautiful international design, even if you know nothing about it.

Sibelius Park

This urban park and monument to Finnish composer Jean Sibelius offers a peaceful retreat from the noise and activity of the city. Top things to do in helsinki, tour helsinki cathedral.

The Helsinki Cathedral is hard to miss. It commands attention due to its massive size and white, neoclassical architecture. The cathedral looks down over Helsinki with a calm and watchful eye. Head inside for a tour, and you may be surprised to find that the interior is far more reverent and minimal than the opulent exterior.

Shop at Market Square

Helsinki’s best-known shopping experience is Market Square, which has been open and operating for over 100 years now. More than just sellers with booths, there are stores selling souvenirs and handmade Finnish goods, and restaurants preparing regional delicacies like salmon soup and cabbage rolls.

Play at Hietaniemi Beach

Hietaniemi Beach is one of the most popular in all of Helsinki and is commonly crowded in the summertime. Play a round of beach volleyball, then take a dip in the water to cool off.

Culture & History of the Helsinki Cruise Port

Originally, Finland was part of Sweden, and stayed under Swedish rule for hundreds of years. During the Middle Ages and beyond, Helsinki slowly became known as a port and trade city. By 1812, Helsinki was named the capital of Finland, which attracted universities, arts institutions, and affluent benefactors who invested in the capital and began building many of its signature architectural marvels. Today, the population of Helsinki is over a half a million, and the city is growing. Locals primarily speak Finnish, but some speak Swedish. Many of the road signs are in Finnish, but luckily many locals know basic English and are more than happy to help out those visiting the city on a Helsinki cruise.

Helsinki Port Facilities & Location

There are two harbors where cruise ships dock. Larger Helsinki cruise ships will arrive at West Harbor, either at Melkki Quay or Katajanokka Quay, where you’ll find ATMs, a currency exchange counter, trolley stops, and areas to hail a taxi from. Free wifi is offered within the city center of Helsinki.

Transportation in Helsinki

There’s pretty much every form of transportation imaginable in Helsinki, whether you want to tackle the city center on your own two feet, rent bicycles to go off-the-beaten path, or hop in a taxi. Make sure your taxi driver turns on the meter to ensure you get the proper fare. There are hop-on/hop off tour buses catering specifically to cruise passengers and travelers, so keep an eye out for those as well. The city is walkable once you arrive in downtown, and there are a couple of shuttle buses that can bring you back to the West Harbor as needed.

Shopping Near the Helsinki Cruise Port

There’s more shopping at the smaller cruise port at South Harbor than West Harbor, particularly boutiques that are focused on Finnish design. Close to the center of town, Kamppi Shopping Mall has over 100 shops and dozens of restaurants where you can sample traditional Finnish foods. Near the cruise port at the iconic Market Square, you’ll find standard souvenirs and trinkets to take home.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency used in Finland is the euro, and you’ll find that credit and debit cards are generally accepted most places when you arrive on a Helsinki cruise. Tipping isn’t a big thing in Finland, and most restaurants include a service charge on your bill.

Cruises & Ferries

photo © Tallink Silja

One of the most relaxing ways of seeing the great natural beauty of Finland is to take a cruise, whether through the myriad islands and skerries of its unique archipelagoes, or across the multitude of navigable lakes, canals and rivers, in a choice of canal boats, vintage steamers, and both large and small ferries. The m/s Brahe, for example, sails in Lake Saimaa, the Saimaa canal, and into the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland, following a route from Savonlinna through Puumala, Lappeenranta and Kotka to Helsinki. Other popular routes include Turku-Naantali, and Helsinki to Porvoo. In central finland, where most of the major population centres are built by lakesides, every town has a busy harbour, and most run small ferries and cruises locally.

Port of Helsinki Overview | 9 Best Things To Do In Helsinki, Finland

Helsinki Cathedral

Welcome to the port of Helsinki!

The happiest city in the world and Europe’s northernmost capital, Helsinki is the largest city in Finland and one of the frequent stops in Scandinavia and Baltic cruise itineraries. Often considered the gate between the West and the East (Saint Petersburg is only 400 km/250 miles away), Helsinki features a blend of Western and Eastern cultural influences reflected in the city’s architecture and lifestyle. In this article, read about:

  • Port of Helsinki (Helsinki cruise terminal, getting around, useful info)

Port of Helsinki

Get your cameras ready for magnificent photo opportunities of the beautiful landscapes as the cruise ship sails through the Finnish archipelago on the way to Helsinki! Port Helsinki is one of the busiest passenger ports in Europe and Finland’s largest cargo port. It consists of 4 cruise terminals: South Harbour, West Harbour, Katajanokka, and Hernesaari.

  • Hernesaari terminal – The majority of large cruise ships dock at Munkkisaari Quay (3 berths: LHB, LHC, and LHD), located approximately 3.5 km/2.2 miles away from the city center. The terminal consists of several facilities, including a tourist information booth, restrooms, free Wi-Fi, souvenir shops, and a taxi rank. If you decide to walk to the city center, it will take you approximately 30 to 45 minutes, or you can hop on buses #14 or #17 to take you downtown.
  • West Harbour – International cruise ships used to dock at Melkki Quay, located at the south end of the West Harbour, about 3 km/2 miles from Helsinki city center. However, West Harbour is nowadays mostly used by ferries, as the brand new ferry terminal has recently been built at the Lansisatama Quay . Here, you can take a 2-hour ferry ride to Tallinn . A new ferry terminal boasts modern facilities and great access to the city center by public transport.
  • South Harbour – This port consists of two terminals (three docks): Makasiini Terminal ( Pakkahuone Quay ) and Olympia Terminal ( Olympia Quay ) , located within a 10-minute walking distance from Market Square and Helsinki downtown. Smaller cruise ships usually dock at Pakkahuone Quay, where cruise passengers can find a tourist information desk, souvenir shops, restrooms, luggage lockers, and other terminal facilities.
  • Katajanokka – Located in the Katajanokka district, this terminal serves smaller cruise ships and ferry transportation to Tallinn, Estonia. You can find souvenir shops, ATMs, luggage lockers, and restrooms at the quay, as well as parking and a taxi rank. This terminal is located within a short walking distance from the main Helsinki highlights.

NOTE: Your cruise ship will most likely dock at Munkkisaari Quay (Hernesaari terminal) , as that one is mostly used by international cruise ships. Other harbors are mainly used for ferry transportation to Tallinn, Stockholm, Saint Petersburg, and other places.

Getting Around & Local Transportation

  • Cruise lines normally offer a shuttle service to the city center for a nominal fee. It’s recommended to purchase tickets in advance onboard to avoid lines.
  • The currency in Finland is EURO (€). Finland introduced the Euro as its official currency in 2002, becoming the only Nordic country that uses Euro. Local currency and credit cards are widely accepted.
  • As your cruise ship will most probably dock at the Hernesaari terminal , you will take bus #17 in Matalasalmenkuja, and you will get off at the stops by the Market Square and Senate Square in the city center. Bus #14 is another bus you can take, and it goes to the railway station (get off at Kampintori and walk to the train station). If you are heading to the Helsinki airport, you can go to the railway station, and from there take bus 615, 615T,  Finnair City Bus or train I or P.
  • The distance between Helsinki port and Helsinki airport is around 20 km/12.5 miles (a 30-minute drive)
  • If your ship docks at Katajanokka terminal, you can use trams #4 and #5 to go to the city center if you don’t want to walk (walking distance is 10 minutes).
  • When it comes to the tickets, you can buy them at the HSL ticket machines (cheaper) or from the driver. The best and cheapest option is to buy a day ticket. You can check the timetables and fares at the official website https://www.hsl.fi/
  • Taxis are normally available in front of the terminal. They are metered and like in other Scandinavian countries, quite expensive.
  • Each of the cruise terminals has a Hop on Hop off bus stop (whenever cruise ships are in the terminal). The approximately 90-minute route includes stops at Helsinki’s most famous city attractions, such as Senate Square/Helsinki City Museum, Market Square, Helsinki Art Museum (Amos Rex) and Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church), Sibelius Monument, Helsinki Zoo, Helsinki Olympic Stadium, Swedish Theater, and many others. Check out the Helsinki Hop on Hop off bus tours on Viator and Get Your Guide
  • Helsinki Card is a convenient and economical sightseeing package available for 1, 2, or 3 days duration and includes free entry to 30+ attractions and museums, a free bus tour around the city, discounts in restaurants and shops, a free ferry to Suomenlinna Sea Fortress and Suomenlinna Museum, and much more. 9 Best Things to Do in the Port of Helsinki

Many attractions in the port of Helsinki are located within reasonable walking distance from the city center. However, consider that ships have limited time in port, so it is always recommended to plan your day in advance. If it’s your first time here, consider taking a guided tour  to maximize your day ashore.

1. Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church)

This unique church is located in the Töölö neighborhood right in the city center and represents one of the most visited Helsinki attractions. It has an unusual, circular form and was carved out of solid rocks, which is why it is also known as the Rock Church. Covered by an impressive copper dome and boasting excellent acoustics, the church is a popular venue for concerts.

During the peak summer months, it is strongly recommended to book online to avoid the lines and waiting. There is no elevator inside the Church. Wheelchair users are welcome to the Church hall.

2. Cathedral of Helsinki

This Lutheran Church, also known as the White Church, is located at Senate Square right in the heart of the city. Built between 1830–1852 as a tribute to the Grand Duke of Finland, Tsar Nicholas I of Russia, this monumental neoclassic cathedral is considered the unofficial symbol of the city. With an iconic green dome and marvelous architecture, this cathedral is a perfect blend of Eastern and Western architectural influences.

Wheelchair users can access the Cathedral of Helsinki using the back entrance. There is an elevator that takes you straight to the sanctuary and there is a ramp that will take you to the viewing platform.

3. Market Square

No visit to Helsinki is complete unless you spend time at one of the most visited attractions in Helsinki – a bustling harborside open-air Market Square where you can feel the authentic city vibe! Check out the market stands where you find a wide variety of items, including freshly caught fish, fruits and vegetables, coffee, and Finnish handicraft and souvenirs. Do not miss trying Finnish cuisine – Salmon soup with rye bread is the locals’ favorite! Right by Market Square, you can embark on a canal cruise.

4. Uspenski Cathedral

Designed by the Russian architect Aleksey Gornostayev in the first half of the 19th century, Uspenski Cathedral is the largest Orthodox Church in Western Europe. The imposing red-brick cathedral is located in the city center, only a 10-minute walk from Market Square and other city landmarks. The magnificent religious edifice sits on a hilltop overlooking the city and the harbor and is no less impressive than buildings on Moscow’s Red Square.

Do not miss the opportunity to visit inside and admire the rich collection of icons and Orthodox decorations.  Even though the Cathedral is closed on Mondays, it is well worth it to take a walk to see the Cathedral’s lavish exterior, a clear symbol of Russian influence in Finnish history.

5. Suomenlinna Fortress

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is situated on a group of islands off Helsinki and was built by Sweden in the second half of the 18th century as a maritime fortress. Here you will have the opportunity to visit the museums, bunkers, church and fortress wall, as well as enjoy one of the cafes and breweries or even rent a bike for a pleasant ride around the island. Make sure you bring your camera because this place offers fantastic photo opportunities!

There is no entrance fee to the fortress, however, a ticket is required to visit the museums. Tickets can be bought at Suonmelinna Centre or you can purchase tickets in advance online. Ticket to the Suomenlinna Museum includes access to an auditorium where you can watch a short video about Suonmelinna’s history.

To get to Suomenlinna Fortress, you need to take a ferry that departs from the port of Helsinki Market Square. The ride takes approximately 15-20 minutes each way, and ferries run every 20 minutes. If you purchase the public transport day ticket, the round-trip transfer to the island is free and if you buy the Helsinki Card , a ferry ride and a visit to the museums are included.

6. Seurasaari Open-Air Museum

Be transported to the rural Helsinki of the old days and learn how Finns used to live before the modern era. The open-air museum consists of many old houses, farmsteads, a manor house, a church from Kiruna dating back to the 16 th century, and other buildings that have been brought from all around Finland.

During the summer months, you will be able to find craft markets and different workshops for the whole family. The museum is located in Meilahti, approximately 7 km/4.3 miles from the Helsinki City Centre and the harbor. To get there, you can take bus #24 , and get off at Seurasaari which is the last stop. Entrance tickets are required and can be purchased directly at the museum or booked online. Seurasaari Open-Air Museum is not wheelchair accessible.

7. Sibelius Memorial

This unique monument is situated in Sibelius Park in the district of Töölö, approximately a 10-minute drive from the city center. The monument titled “Passio Musicae” was built by Eila Hiltunen in 1967 as a tribute to the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. The impressive monument features over 600 steel tubes that capture the wind like a pipe organ.

However, this monument was the subject of criticism among the Finnish people so the second sculpture of Sibelius was added to the memorial. To get to the monument, you can take bus #24 from Market Square (the trip can take up to 30 minutes).

8. Finnish Countryside

If you have already visited the highlights of Helsinki and would like to experience something different, you should take a trip to visit Savijärvi Gård manor, a 100 years old horse breeding farmhouse located in the municipality of Sipoo 40 minutes away from Helsinki. Here you will be greeted by the owners before enjoying a delicious homemade lunch and a guided tour of the farm grounds to see some of the horses. Savijärvi Gård manor is only reserved for private groups, so make sure to check with your Shore Excursions team onboard to find out your options.

9. Village of Porvoo

This charming medieval town is the second oldest in Finland and a popular destination for tourists. Old Porvoo is known for its well-preserved 18th and 19th-century buildings and a 15th-century Cathedral. Enjoy a stroll through the narrow cobblestone streets and admire the colorful wooden houses, many of them converted into arts and crafts shops, souvenir stores, and cozy cafes. The red-painted riverside warehouses are one of the most photographed national landscapes in Finland.

Old Porvoo Village near Helsinki

Porvoo is located 52 km/32 miles away from Helsinki city center, approximately a 45-minute drive. Due to the limited time in port, I strongly suggest you book a shore excursion with your cruise line or an independent tour operator. If you would like to get to Porvoo on your own, you must take a bus from Kamppi bus station in Helsinki.

Sightseeing:

Helsinki is a marvelous city to see and very easy to get around in. Most of the sights are around Market Square, so that has to be your starting point. From there you can walk to Senate square, take a ferry to the fortress, wander about the many, many booths, shopping, having something to eat etc.

Helsinki is the gate between East and West. While it embodies much of the Finnish spirit and its progressive hi-tech push, it is unlike any other Finnish city, due in part to the fascinating combination of Swedish and Russian influences The city's urban lifestyle is flavored by the sea and surrounding nature. The summer heat and the midnight sun inspire the inhabitants to occupy the many parks and terraces. The city center is built around the main harbor where the famous Kauppatori (market square) - also known as the fish market – is located. The main streets include the twin shopping avenues of Pohjoisesplanadi and Eteläesplenadi. Helsinki offers a diverse cultural life, outstanding architectural gems and a full range of quality shopping opportunities. Examples of the world famous Finnish design is to be found anywhere in the city. The Finns are friendly people who speak good English, and Helsinki's relaxed atmosphere makes it easy for visitors to feel welcome.

Helsinki - Attractions

Tours Excursions Transportation:

A day ticket is 8 euro on all public transit , including the ferry to Suomenlinna. The trams 2 and 3 almost function as hop on/off buses, passing by most tourist attractions making a figure eight loop through Helsinki.

The Suomenlinna ferry runs from the Market Place (Kauppatori). They leave every 20 minutes and it also takes 20 minutes to reach the island. The ticket costs 5 euros per person (So buy the day ticket instead!) and it is valid for 12 hours so you'll only need to buy it once. Once you get to the island, you are free to go anywhere. There are museums which charge a small fee.

Hop on/off tours . They all stop at the cruise terminals. The approximately 90-minute route includes stops at Helsinki's most famous city attractions, such as Senate Square/Helsinki City Museum, Market Square, Helsinki Art Museum (Amos Rex) and Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church), Sibelius Monument , Helsinki Zoo, Helsinki Olympic Stadium, Swedish Theater.

The fare rises gradually on a kilometer basis, as indicated by the meter, and depending on the number of passengers.

Umea cruise port

Region Baltic - Norwegian Fjords - Russia

Local Time 2024-05-14 05:01

Port Umea cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Umea, Holmsund, Sweden. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Umea is a port city and the capital of Sweden's Vasterbotten County (Norrland region), with population around 130,000. The city is at the mouth of Ume River, providing access to Bothnia Gulf. Sweden's capital city ( Stockholm ) is approx 600 km (370 mi) to the south.

Port Umea (locode SEUME) has a regularly scheduled daily ferry service (provided by Wasaline ) linking to Vaasa Finland , with 11 weekly crossings (travel time 3,5 hours). Ferries and cruise ships dock at Holmsund Ferry Port (locode SEHLD). The town of Holmsund (population around 6,000) is approx 18 km (11 mi) to the south of Umea and serves as the city's principal port, so the Sweden-Finland ferry service is actually between Holmsund-Vaasa.

Wasaline's Vaasa-Umea service was inaugurated on January 3, 2013, with the 1981-built ship Wasa Express. Since September 2021, the route is served by the newbuild cruiseferry Aurora Botnia .

Umea is widely acknowledged as one of Sweden's top educational and research centers. At the 1965-opened Umea University are enrolled ~40,000 students (plus ~4200 employees) and it is the main economic factor for the city's population growth in the last decades. At Umea University was developed CRISPR gene editing (genetic engineering) which in 2020 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Two European highways pass through the city and connect it directly to Finland - E4 (ends in Tornio) and E12 (ends in Helsinki). Umea Airport is approx 4 km (2 mi) away. Regular domestic flights (operated by Scandinavian Airlines and Jonair) link the city with Stockholm, Ostersund and Kiruna. The airline Finnair offers regular flights to Helsinki .

Since 2010, the company Botniabanan AB (Bothnia Line) provides railway transportation between Umea and Hoga Kusten Airport (aka Kramfors) and via Ornskoldsvik to Stockholm. Botniabanan's higher-speed trains serve the 190 km (120 mi) railroad with speeds ~200 kph (120 mph). The route contains 140 bridges and a total of 25 km (16 mi) of tunnels. The train travel time to Stockholm is around 6,5 hours.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has arrived in Kyiv to reaffirm American support for Ukraine in its war with Russia.

"The Secretary's mission here is really to talk about how our supplemental assistance is going to be executed in a fashion to help shore up their defences (and) enable them to increasingly take back the initiative on the battlefield," a US official said.

Artillery, long-range missiles known as ATACMS and air defence interceptors approved by President Joe Biden on 24 April have already started reaching the Ukrainian forces, the official added.

Welcome back to our live coverage of the war in Ukraine, following an important few days for the battlefield and beyond.

After opening a second front in northeastern Kharkiv on Friday, Russian forces claimed to have captured nine villages.

The governor of the region said there was a threat of fighting spreading to other settlements, with Russian soldiers attacking from the border in small groups in an attempt to stretch the frontline.

Oleh Syniehubov blamed delays to Western weaponry for the assault, but a soldier complained that fortifications were not strong enough, claiming Russian forces walked "freely" across the border.

Military analysts pointed to the West's policy against Ukraine using their weapons to strike Russian soil as responsible for incursion.

The attacks threaten to stretch Ukrainian forces already outmanned and outgunned on the main frontline.

Before we resume our regular updates and analysis, here is a recap of the other key moments from the last 24 hours.

  • The military commander for the Kharkiv region was sacked;
  • Thousands of people were evacuated from towns near the border;
  • Putin's choice of an economist for defence minister indicated he was preparing Russia for a protracted war, analysts said;
  • Ukraine said it thwarted Russian agents plotting to set off a series of bomb attacks in Kyiv and the Western city of Lviv;
  • Russia's acting foreign minister said the country was prepared if the West wanted to fight for Ukraine on the battlefield;

That's all our coverage for what has been an important day on the battlefield and beyond.

If you're just checking in, here is a recap of the key developments that took place since this morning.

You can scan the key points above or scroll back through our posts to find out more details.

We'll be back tomorrow with more updates and analysis on the war in Ukraine.

  • Russian forces claimed to have captured nine villages northeastern Ukraine, having opened a second front in the Kharkiv region on Friday;
  • The governor of Kharkiv said there was a threat of fighting spreading to other settlements;
  • Hundreds of people were evacuated from towns near the border;
  • Analysts said Vladimir Putin's choice of defence minister indicated he was preparing Russia for a protracted war.

As fighting continues in northeastern Kharkiv, its governor has issued some updates.

Russian forces struck a farm in the town of Korotychy, killing a civilian and wounding three others, said Oleh Syniehubov.

Another attack on Liptsiy injured a 71-year-old woman, who was rushed to hospital, he said.

The regional defence council has ordered the mandatory evacuation of 113 orphans from three settlements, said Oleh Syniehubov.

Plans have been laid out to evacuate a total of 1,600 residents today.

Just 200 to 300 people remain in the embattled town of Vovchansk, he said, which had a population of 2,500 before the assault and 17,000 before the war.

Russian agents plotted to set off a series of bomb attacks in Kyiv and the Western city of Lviv, Ukraine says.

The prosecutor general's office said authorities arrested two military agents over plans to blow up markets and a site near a cafe in the capital, as well as a defence enterprise in Lviv, seizing 19 explosive devices.

Four of the bombs were intended for Kyiv on Thursday, the day when Russia celebrates the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in 1945, according to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).

"According to the plan of the Russian special service, the explosives were supposed to detonate during the supermarkets' peak hours to cause maximum damage to the civilian population," the agency said.

'Disguised as tea boxes'

The explosives intended for the Kyiv builders' markets were disguised as packages of tea, while a bomb was placed in a car for the cafe, according to the SBU.

The Lviv attack was meant to happen last February, the SBU said.

An unidentified defence enterprise was the target, according to prosecutors.

There was no immediate comment from Russia.

Last week, the SBU said it had caught two agents within the state protection department plotting the assassination of Volodymyr Zelenskiy and the head of military intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov.

The Ukrainian military says Russia has had a "partial success" near a village in northern Kharkiv.

But Ukrainian soldiers stopped Russian forces from moving further near Lukyantsi, the general staff said.

It said Russian troops have continued offensive actions, and Ukraine will build up its forces in the area depending on the situation.

Russia launched an incursion from the Belgorod region in Russia across the border into northern Kharkiv on Friday.

Analysts have warned it could stretch Ukrainian forces between two fronts, creating opportunities on the main frontline that Russia may exploit.

Echoing the analysis we featured earlier from the Insitute for the Study of War (see our 11.18am post), a senior Ukrainian official has said Vladimir Putin's reshuffle shows he wants to scale up the war effort.

Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said: "Russia is finally isolating itself and will try to scale up the war, expand its formats while reconfiguring the economy."

In a surprise move, Vladimir Putin sacked his defence minister of 12 years Sergei Shoigu and named economist Adrei Belousov as Mr Shoigu's successor.

The Institute for the Study of War said Mr Belousov, who has no military experience, will be charged with integrating the defence industrial base into wider domestic policy, further placing Russia on a war footing.

It suggests the Kremlin is preparing for a protracted conflict with Ukraine - or even possibly a future confrontation with NATO, the ISW said.

Approximately 40 miles from the fighting in northeastern Kharkiv, children in the region's namesake city are undertaking their first lessons at an underground school.

The classrooms - the first of their kind - are heavily fortified in an effort to allow some pupils to return to in-person teaching out of reach of Russia's bombs.

Kharkiv's schools have been forced to teach online throughout the war as some Russian missiles can reach the city in under a minute.

Metro stations are playing host to dozens of classrooms, while others have been welded together from layers of steel reinforcing wire and poured cement.

Russia has been increasingly carrying out off-road motorbike attacks under the cover of darkness, according to British intelligence.

Lighter, faster, all-terrain vehicles have highly likely been used since the start of this year to hit Ukrainian positions, transport personnel to the frontlines and conduct reconnaissance, the UK defence ministry has said.

It said Russia reportedly purchased 2,100 Chinese off-road vehicles named Desertcross 1000-3, some of which were personally inspected by Vladimir Putin in November.

"Since the start of 2024, Russia has highly likely increased its use of light vehicles, such as all-terrain vehicles and off-road motorbikes, to transport personnel to the frontlines and conduct attacks on Ukrainian positions, particularly at night."

But the army has sacrificed armour and firepower for mobility, with light vehicles "far more vulnerable than their armoured counterparts", the UK MoD said.

Ukrainian drones have "already demonstrated their ability to effectively target" the vehicles, it added.

As we covered in some detail here earlier this year, Sweden dropped more than two centuries of historic neutrality by joining NATO.

The Baltic Sea, which includes maritime access to the Russian city of St Petersburg and the Kaliningrad enclave, is now almost surrounded by members of the alliance.

Today, Swedish prime minister Ulf Kristersson said Nordic and Baltic cooperation was "deeper than at any time in modern times", underpinned by increasing security threats from Russia.

He is hosting German chancellor Olaf Scholtz and the prime ministers of Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland in Stockholm, with security policy and NATO's July summit in Washington topping the agenda.

"We have long appreciated our neighbours, but at the same time underestimated the importance of concrete, operational cooperation," Mr Kristersson wrote in an op-ed in Swedish business paper Dagens Industri.

Meanwhile, the three Baltic prime ministers have been meeting in Lithuania to reaffirm that Moscow's intimidation is not going to dissuade them from supporting Ukraine.

Estonia's prime minister Kaja Kallas said that "Russia has also intensified the shadow war against all of European countries. It wants to really scare and intimidate the free world to scare us away from helping Ukraine".

"We shouldn't be scared," she added.
