Onboard radio programming is featured on new Carnival P&O Cruises vessel

From the Who’s Buying What page: ENCO said its DAD automated playout system is being used to run the onboard radio station on the new Carnival Corp. vessel Iona.

The big ship sailed from Southampton, England, on its first voyage in August. The 1,130-foot-line vessel is driven with liquefied natural gas and has 17 guest decks. And it can carry a pretty good sized radio audience — it accommodates up to 5,200 guests and 1,800 crew. It is operated by Carnival’s P&O Cruises subsidiary.

The ENCO system is used for the Cruise Radio service on the ship. Useful Media Company out of the U.K. provides the radio equipment and automated programming. Music scheduling is through ENCO DAD’s Ensemble music scheduling system; other elements such as on-ship promotions use rotating cuts. New content is sent to onboard operators on disc once a month.

“Cruise Radio is the only ‘as-live’ radio service at sea, and is unique to each of the P&O Cruises ships,” ENCO wrote in a press release. “Played over video from the bow camera and streamed to every cabin on each ship, Cruise Radio combines music with radio elements including imaging, jingles and bespoke commercial packages advertising onboard services, shows and activities.”

The service also provides documentary music programming, historical retrospectives and ship information.

Useful Media also runs Cunard Radio aboard the Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth, owned by Cunard Line.

The Useful Media Company and ENCO Take Radio to The Seas

P&O Cruises’ new vessel  Iona  is the latest ship to feature the bespoke Cruise Radio service powered by  ENCO ’s  DAD  radio automation system. Operated and managed by specialist audio and technology service provider  The Useful Media Company , Cruise Radio offers vacationers an entertaining and informative mix of music and essential ship information. 

Cruise Radio is the only “as-live” radio service at sea and is unique to each P&O Cruises ship. Played over video from the bow camera and streamed to every cabin, Cruise Radio combines music with radio elements, including imaging, jingles, and bespoke commercial packages advertising onboard services, shows, and activities. The fully-featured radio service also provides interesting content, such as documentary music programming, historical retrospectives, and essential information about what is happening on and off the ship. 

The Useful Media Company provided the on-ship equipment for the Cruise Radio service and is responsible for programming its content and supporting its operation. ”We’re very proud to be part of Iona’s adventure as the latest ship to host the Cruise Radio service,” said Grant Francis, managing director of The Useful Media Company. “In the challenging environment of a cruise ship, we needed to ensure rock-solid, uninterrupted, reliable delivery when the ships are at sea or away from their homeport in Southampton. This made ENCO DAD the ideal and only viable technology system for Cruise Radio. It provides all of the tools we need to carry out the project, from supporting multiple libraries of music and clips to built-in audio file conversion.”

ENCO DAD handles music scheduling for Cruise Radio through its integrated Ensemble system. At the same time, other elements such as on-ship promotions use rotating cuts to ensure that relevant content is delivered while continually sounding fresh. “ENCO DAD enables Cruise Radio to be much more engaging and informative than the traditional approach of simply playing songs from a CD or MP3 player in randomized order,” Francis noted. “The output sounds smoother too, as it would on a land-based radio station.” 

The ENCO DAD system provides complete automation of Cruise Radio, minimizing the effort required by onboard staff. The press of a single button updates the music library, advertisements, and software configuration; Enco’s DCL (DAD Command Language) executes all the required steps. This allows The Useful Media Company to partly control the system from its Southampton offices. Onboard operators still need to install a different DVD every month into the system. After that, they simply run a single file, and the DCL commands initiate all the updates from the disc. After the update, the system gets on with things on its own.

Most importantly, the ENCO DAD system has delivered the reliability that Cruise Radio demands. “It continually performs, and it works perfectly every time,” said Francis. “Cruise Radio simply would not work without it.”

Gastro Outbreak Hits Luxury Cruise Ship

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported a gastrointestinal viral outbreak that sickened several cruise ship guests earlier this week.

Twenty-eight guests on Silversea Cruises’ Silver Nova, along with one crew member, fell ill. This represented over 4% of the passengers aboard (required for CDC reporting). 

Fourth cruise ship outbreak of the year

The CDC monitored the outbreak as the ship completed a 16-day sailing and docked at Port Everglades earlier this week.

The ship departed Peru and made several port calls in South America, the Caribbean, and Mexico. The CDC hasn’t confirmed this, although symptoms disclosed, like diarrhea, make Norovirus a possible cause. 

So far this year, three cruise ship outbreaks have been attributed to Norovirus: on Celebrity Constellation, Cunard’s Queen Victoria, and aboard Holland America Line’s ms Koningsdam .

The CDC said sick guests were isolated in their staterooms, and Silversea has implemented more stringent deep cleaning and disinfection measures.

The agency said the cruise line “made announcements of the outbreak, encourage case reporting, and encourage good hand hygiene.”

Silver Nova departed on Monday for a 20-night Panama Canal transit to San Francisco.

Silver Nova was christened in January 2024, and the CDC has yet to receive its bi-annual sanitation inspection from the Vessel Sanitation Program .

Last year, there were 14 cruise ship outbreaks, all but one of which were attributed to Norovirus. Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises each had three separate outbreaks.

The CDC said the Virgin Voyages ‘ Scarlet Lady illness was caused by salmonella and E. coli.

The CDC says the Norovirus bug can be extremely contagious and is the leading cause of foodborne illness.

It generally spreads through contaminated food and water or by touching surfaces or other objects already contaminated by the virus.

Israel launches missile strikes into Iran in response to Tehran's attack Sunday

The Israeli military has conducted missile strikes against Iran, a senior U.S. military official told NPR on Thursday. There are also reports of explosions in Iraq and Syria.

The strikes appear to be the response Israel vowed to carry out after an Iranian attack on Sunday, when Tehran fired hundreds of drones and missiles at Israel. Most of Iran's volleys were intercepted or caused little damage. The U.S. military official spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday.

Iran's Fars News Agency says explosions were heard in the central city of Isfahan, according to the Reuters News Agency.

The extent of Israel's strikes and the weapons used weren't clear.

The U.S. and other western allies had been urging Israel to forego a military strike to avoid a regional conflict springing out of the Israel-Hamas war .

Those concerns rose when an air strike – which Iran blamed on Israel – killed two Iranian military commanders in the country's consulate in Damascus, Syria, on April 1.

Iran said Sunday's attack on Israel was in response to that.

The region has been on the edge of wider conflict since Hamas attacked Israel Oct. 7, which Israel says killed 1,200 people, and Israel's subsequent invasion of Gaza, which has killed more than 30,000 people according to Gaza health officials.

Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah have traded frequent fire over the northern Israel border. Houthi militants, also backed by Iran, have been going after international commercial vessels passing through the Red Sea in recent months. The group's leaders claim they're targeting ships with links to Israel in response to the country's ongoing invasion of Gaza.
