Girona – Our Signature Tour

2-marty leading the pack

Nestled in the northeast corner of Spain near the Mediterranean Coast, known as the Costa Brava, Girona offers year-round beauty, and miles of the world’s finest riding.

Over 50 Professional cyclists have called Girona home since 1997?

From the dazzling Mediterranean coastline, to the unforgettable Catalonian cuisine, this tour is one of Jemison Cycling’s signature tours!

Tour Details Dining Options Accommodations Physical Requirements Tour Inclusions Tour Exclusions

About this tour…

Without a doubt Girona is one of Spain’s most beautiful towns, with access to virtually everything Europe is known for: the finest culinary experiences, the special quaintness unique to the Old World, friendly and welcoming locals and, again, world-class cycling for all abilities and interests.

All of this is just a few kilometers from the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

Game of Thrones recently came to Girona for filming in the Medieval quarter (called the Call).

After having lived in this Spanish/Catalan town for six years while riding in the Professional Peloton, Marty has a love for Girona, something he is only too willing to share with guests on this “Signature Tour.”

Girona has been Jemison Cycling Tours European Headquarters since 2003 and our Girona, Bike Tour has been a favorite ever since.

The trip begins with rides in and around Girona, taking in its nearby countryside and passing  glorious fields of vibrant herbs and magnificently restored farmhouses.

We’ll climb the nearby Els Angels and San Grau, mountains where the local professionals test themselves. Next, we’ll head to the coast where there are typically more cyclists than cars.

The roads along the Costa Brava flow like ribbon next to the picturesque beaches. We’ll then ride towards the Pyrenees, where we’ll pass through small villages and peaceful landscapes – quinessential Catalunya.

Finally, we’ll ride back to Girona through the hills, valleys and mountains for our final evening together.

Catalonian Cuisine in Girona

Group dining

This tour offers incredibly diverse rides with spectacular scenery and cuisine. And, like the Catalans, we’ll eat very well, savor the region’s finest restaurants, and sample our share of the area’s wines.

It’s important to remember that, you are not in Spain . You are in Catalunya.

Thus, the food has more of a Mediterranean appeal and flavor. The main focus is on the fresh seafood, meats, vegetables and a variety of sausages called ‘fuet’. Think of it as, the Greek Isles meets France meets local garden.

Boasting many Michelin starred restaurants, people from all over Europe travel to Catalunya for the sun and the food, and we promise to share the best with you. The wines are a variety of Rioja, Priorat, Penedes and Emproda, which you’ll have the honor of sampling.

This is a trip for those that want to ride, dine and immerse themselves in the local culture. Oh and you’ll likely see some Pro’s riding or hanging out as well.

44|5’s Spain Short-stay Cycling Tour

Girona breakaway, accommodation, dates & prices, travel details.

cycling tours girona spain

Nicknamed ‘Pro Ville’, Girona has probably the highest concentration of pro cyclist residents than anywhere else in Europe. And if pros live here you know there’s some good riding to be had! 44|5 has an affinity with Girona, like most others who’ve visited the city and surrounding countryside, and we’ve been riding and running tours here since 2014 . The town has a vibrant, colorful old center, dominated by a hilltop cathedral and filled with lovely squares, winding streets and plenty of restaurants, cafes and montaditos  bars (Catalan tapas) to fill you up after a great ride. It’s a perfect urban base for a cycling holiday.

And the riding is really something. Girona is located between the  Mediterranean and the Pyrenees , meaning you can do a coastal ride one day and hammer in the foothills the next. The pros have their favorite routes and climbs, of course, and we’ll search them out on our BreakAway tour. And make sure you keep an eye out on our rides because ‘pro sightings’ are a common occurrence in this part of the world!

Girona BreakAway is a custom, private tour . If you have a group of friends, just pick your dates and contact us .

  • 4 nights 4-star Accommodation
  • All breakfasts
  • 2 picnic lunches
  • 2 dinners in town

NOT INCLUDED

  • Personal expenses, such as mini-bar, telephone or souvenir purchases
  • Bikes – bring your own or we can help you rent high quality road bikes

Rides will start after breakfast unless weather suggests afternoon is best. We’ve chosen  4 fantastic routes  that will take you in all directions from the city. Highlights include the ’pro climb’ of  Rocacorba , an unforgettable coastal ride along the  Mediterranean , and the beautiful  Catalan countryside  on every ride.

Afternoons and some evenings are free on your Girona BreakAway tour, with all the best restaurants, cafes and bars just steps from your hotel.

To the right is one of the Mediterranean loops we regularly do. The undulating ride along the sea if unforgettable.

Els Angels. 60 km, 900 m of ascent

This classic local route is the perfect introduction to both the wonderful Catalan roads and the history of the pro peloton in Girona. Still known today as the  ’Armstrong Loop’ , this 60 km circuit takes in two long, steady climbs; the first rising to  Els Angeles Sanctuary and the second informally named the  ’Hincapie climb’ .

Dinner in the old town tonight.

Cyclist at Els Angeles near Girona on a Girona bike tour

Olot. 110 km, 1400 m of ascent

A big, beautiful ride into the  Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park  awaits you today. Much of our loop will be spent riding around, up, and over some of the 40 extinct volcanoes in this protected park. Along the way we will pass through several Catalan villages, including our turnaround town, Olot, with its many examples of Modernist architecture. This loop is a favorite with local pros, so keep your head up and be ready to do some kit spotting!

Picnic lunch on the ride. Dinner on your own.

View of Pyrenees from near Girona

Costa Brava. 95 km, 1400 m of ascent

Our two main objectives today (other than a seaside  cortado !) is the stunning coastal route along the  Costa Brava , followed by the tranquil-but-tough climb of  Sant Grau , which ascends to the hermitage of the same name. In between our two goals for the day are rolling hills, lumpy climbs, and typical Catalan villages.

Picnic lunch on the ride. Dinner on your own tonight.

Costa Brava view

Rocacorba. 70 km, 1200 m of ascent

On our last day in Girona we test our legs on the very same climb that the pros do. Rocacorba is famous for being  a testing ground for pro riders  who want to know their conditioning before big races. Caution: if you’re looking for KOMs on this climb you’ve got a pile of pretty famous names to get past on the leader board!

Farewell  pintxos  and dinner in town tonight.

44|5 partners with several comfortable and well-situated hotels in Girona. Your accommodation will depend on availability on our chosen dates. Below is our main partner, the Hotel Ciutat de Girona.

Hotel Ciutat de Girona

Hotel Ciutat de Girona is located in the historic and cultural heart of Girona, just steps away from the best restaurants and bars the city has to offer.  The hotel combines modern style and amenities with Catalan hospitality and personality. The heated indoor swimming pool will help soothe tired legs after a long ride.

Barcelona , one of the most interesting and romantic cities in Europe, is just 30 minutes by train from Girona. If you have the time, we’d suggest a few days there on one end of your BreakAway.

The area around Girona is also interesting, but you’ll need a car to explore properly. There are some wonderful, ancient villages close by (e.g. Besalu ) and Figueres (short trip by train) houses the Salvador Dali Museum , a must-see for fans of Dali.

Fantastic experience.

Cycling in Girona: bike riding traveller’s guide

When to go, where to stay, and must-do rides and attractions on and off the bike

cycling in girona

Michelle Arthurs-Brennan

Spain has long been the country of choice for cyclists seeking warm weather riding – but up until recently Girona has been one of the lesser-visited areas, with Mallorca snapping up the lion’s share of two wheeled visitors.

All that’s gradually changing as more riders begin to take note of Girona and its charm – with attractions both on and off the bike.

>>> Best cycling holidays

Home to a disproportionate number of pro cyclists for its sub 100k total population, Girona has a lot to give: undulating country lanes, testing climbs, technical descents plus an explosion of varied cuisine and its own unique history, culture and architecture.

>>> Cycling holidays in Spain

The Catalonian university city is intersected by the River Onyar, with the medieval streets of the Old Quarter on one side and more modern buildings on the other.

cycling in girona

The maze of narrow cobbled streets in the old town wind up to the city’s cathedral, the remains of a Roman fortress plus the city walls which are an attraction on their own.

It takes less than 15 minutes to escape the confines of the stone city and meet the country lanes, and wide roads combined with relaxed Catalonian culture mean that hassle from drivers is rare. Indeed, during a week of daily riding in the area, Cycling Weekly experienced just one semi-close pass (the kind you’d barely notice in London).

Pro prospective: why go to Girona?

cycling tours girona spain

Former pro David Millar has lived in Girona since 2006, and is a major advocate of the city and its culture - so much so his CHPT3 brand will launch a new line in June, simply called 'GIRONA.'

"In the past decade Girona has become the professional cyclist’s home from home, or for many, like me, simply home," Millar says. "Before Girona, pros were scattered across southern Europe, some choosing Tuscany, others the south of France, or for the crazies, Belgium and the Netherlands.

"There’s a reason Girona has become the go-to place, and it begins with five things: one, good training roads i.e varying terrain, quiet, good quality; two, good weather (winter rarely below 0, summer low 30s);  three, airports nearby; four, other professionals to train with, and five, a good quality of life for the whole family.

"The city itself is a hidden treasure, so close to Barcelona yet as far removed as one can imagine," Millar adds. "Everybody who visits here for the first time is taken aback with its beauty and without fail is shocked they had not known about it or visited before.  It doesn’t have a vast array of hotels because it is more of a day visit sort of place, it’s only the recent cycling tourism that has created a new form of visitor.

"With that tourism there is a changing of the café culture, with Christian Meier’s La Fabrica and Espresso Mafia [more on them below] leading the way.  I moved here in 2006 and there were less than 10 professionals living here, legend goes there is over 100 living here now."

When to go and how to get there

Convinced? Time to do some planning.

With a humid subtropical climate, Girona's winters are cold but the summer really heats up. The best times to visit are spring and autumn - max temperatures sit comfortably at 18ºc to 26ºc between April and June, and 26ºc to 21ºc in September and October.

Average rain days are around five to seven a month - so you might get one during a week long visit, but everyone needs a rest day from time to time anyway.

When it comes to airports, you can fly in to Girona’s own airport, a taxi to the city will cost you about €30-35 euros. Alternatively you can fly to Barcelona, which has a transfer time of about 90 minutes - a taxi is around €130-140, or you could hire a car for the week.

When we visited, we opted for a British Airways flight from Gatwick to Barcelona, since BA allows your bike to travel as your hold luggage provided it weighs less than 23kg, then hired a car for the week.

Where to stay in Girona

Though cycle tourism is still in its infancy here (compared to the fame of hotspots like Mallorca, Tenerife and Lanzarote), the area is no stranger to visitors and there’s plenty of hotels and accommodation.

We’d recommend staying in the old town, giving you easy access to endless gastronomical window shopping – plus everything you could ever need (bike shops, pharmacies, ice cream) will be just metres away by foot.

We found a flat via Airbnb, but there’s a huge amount of choice and plenty of hotels - including the  Hotel Nord 1901  - which is opposite the Service Course bike shop, ideally situated for those prone to morning bike related traumas.

cycling in girona

The only downsides to staying in the old town is that most buildings are long and thin, which means your accommodation could be up several flights of stairs, early nights can be made more difficult by late night revellers, and parking is limited.

We can’t do much about the stairs, but we can recommend you pack ear plugs to solve point two, and there’s unlimited free parking about five minutes walk from the river (just to the side of the Parc de la Devesa).

Cyclists don’t need to worry about provision when it comes to maintenance, hire, kit and nutrition supplies or ride inspiration.

There’s number of bike shops offering maintenance and hire – but the cream of the crop has to be The Service Course , located in the heart of the old town.

Unassuming from the outside, the shop is pretty easy to miss - indeed we walked past twice whilst looking for the entrance. Owned by former pro Christian Meier and his wife Amber, there you’ll find classily sporadic stock on the walls but the limited range offers pretty much everything you could need – just carefully selected.

The Service Course will offer everything from guided rides to daily servicing and lactate testing. And don’t be fooled by the high end price tags of offerings like daily 'pro bike service', you could spend a bomb if you wanted but they also fixed a dodgy headset issue for us for just €5.

Under the same ownership are the La Fabrica breakfast/lunch bistro and Espresso Mafia ‘organised coffee’ bar – each with their own character yet matching refined but practical exterior.

Where to ride

The Catalonian city is located just over 100km to the northeast of Barcelona, nestled in the Costa Brava region, between the coast and sitting beneath the shadow of the Pyrenees mountains.

cycling in girona

The geography of the area provides a heady mix of long, flat lanes, ideal for picking up the pace, rolling terrain which really can sap your legs (whilst making them stronger) as well as the testing climbs most of us travel to Europe to conquer.

‘Must ride’ attractions include the Rococorba climb, Els Angels, Mare de Deu del Mont and the coast road.

The Rococorba erupts out of the lakeside town of Banyoles (route inspiration in GPX form here) . It’s 10km long, with an average gradient of 7 per cent – though undulations and extended sections at 10 per cent make it feel much tougher than those two stats might suggest.

>>> The Rococorba climb in detail

It's a road to nowhere - in fact it was only paved in 2006 - and has since become a test track for local pros. In 2009, when former pro and Girona resident David Millar formed a 'club' with Canadian training partner Michael Barry, they called it Velo Club Rococorba.

When we rode it we saw only three other riders, but in the weeks leading up to the Tour de France it's said to get notably busy with riders checking out their pre-Tour form.

cycling in girona

UAE Team Emirates rider Dan Martin told Cycling Weekly:  “The thing about it for me is that you have to make an effort just to get to the top – it’s not really a climb that you can ride up easily, which you can with most others. If you want to get to the top, because it’s so steep, you have to try on it, but the view is great once you’re up there.”

A little less brutal is the Les Angles climb - nestled between the city and the Costa Brava. It’s a more gentle beast, at 11km long, with an average gradient of four per cent, helped out by a 2km flat section in the middle. At the top is a church, which hosted the marriage of renowned artist and local, Salvador Dali. You could include the climb within the route for the Girona Gran Fondo - GPX files here.

The Mare de Deu del Mount – at the top of which you’ll find a shrine named ‘Mother of God of the Mountain’ (so it's the ‘Mother of the God’ climb if you feel like making it ominous) – acts as the gateway to the Pyrenees.

At 18.8km long, it’s 18.8km or 21km depending upon which side you climb from. The opening 10km is fairly shallow, but the second half peaks up with gradients of nine and 10 per cent.

cycling in girona

The other ride not to be missed is that of the coastal road (GPX file here) which weaves between the protected mountain area of Massis de Les Cadiretes – from Girona you’ll climb up to the coast road, before enjoying smooth descents that then give way to rolling roads before heading back to the city via flat lanes that intercept farmland.

Off the bike

Hopefully all of that riding has hollowed out your legs, because food is one of the major attractions. There are enough places to eat that you could probably find somewhere new to appease you on a daily basis for at least a month.

One not to miss is the Rocambolesc ice cream parlour, where you'll find a range of novelty ice lollies that mostly serve as selfie props as opposed to genuine recovery treats.

cycling in girona

For breakfast and lunch, La Fabrica  is not to be missed - provided you don't mind your food being sprinkled with edible flowers and your coffee cups sans handles. If it's all a bit fancy, you could just neck a slice of pizza and a cone of patatas bravas from one of the smaller cafes.

The best evening dining experience can be found in the cities' central square, just over the river, but there's plenty more on the side streets. Local Millar details more places to eat and drink in his Chapt3 guide here.

The city architecture is an attraction in itself, its profile having been bolstered by its filmset role in season six of Game of Thrones. Though post-ride legs might be reluctant, a wonder up to the Cathedral, gardens and a walk along the city wall are not to be missed.

cycling in girona

Those with an interest in art would do well to take a trip to the home town of Salvador Dali - Figueres. An amble around Dali Theatre Museum - which as a large pink construction wearing a halo of eggs is rather unmissable - will set you back €14.

10 easy cycling routes in/around Girona + Costa Brava

Girona Costa Brava logo

Girona, on Spain’s Costa Brava coast, is famous for cycling and being home to tons of pro cyclists.

The headline-grabbing cycling routes around Girona and the Costa Brava are often the tough ones (you can find plenty of examples in our guide to Girona here ).

But no cyclist is always looking for a challenging route. Sometimes what we want is a shorter, flatter, more chilled out experience – perhaps even (gasp!) something off-road, suitable for a gravel bike or cruiser.

In this article we share some of the best easy cycling routes Girona and the Costa Brava have to offer. We’ve teamed up with local cycling tour operators to share ten rides for those of us looking for a short yet stunning route to explore the region.

Thanks to the Patronat de Turisme Costa Brava Girona for sponsoring this article.

They are keen to ensure cyclists know that their region is fantastic for everyone from families to super fit cyclists. The routes we highlight here demonstrate the range of cycling Girona and the Costa Brava offer – so enjoy!

Why go cycling in Girona?

First things first, where is Girona and why is it worth visiting?!

Girona is a beautiful Catalonian city, located just over 100km northeast of Barcelona, in Spain’s Costa Brava region. It sits between the dramatic coastline, dotted with small fishing villages, and the high peaks of the Pyrenees mountains.

Girona also has the advantage of being a small city full of charm and a wealth of cycling-focused bike shops, tour companies, cafés and hotels that will welcome cyclists with open arms! For more on why Girona cycling holidays are so awesome, read this !

From a cycling perspective, this means there’s terrain to suit everyone; everything from flat bike trails to savage climbs.

Most articles you’ll read focus on the harder rides, but here we want to share some of the easier gems that make Girona a great place for cyclists to stay, whether you’re riding a leisure/hybrid bike, a gravel bike or a road bike.

Taste of Girona’s cycling routes

Before we share our pick of the best easy routes, this video gives you a taste of what you’ll see while riding.

It was created by local cyclist and MTB XCO World Champion, José Antonio Hermida, who takes us on a gravel bike cycling trip from the Pyrenees to the Costa Brava through tracks, quiet roads and the Via Verde (green ways) of Girona.

Ten easy cycling routes in Girona

We spoke to five of Girona’s cycling tour operators, to get their recommendations on the best Girona cycle routes for cyclists that want to keep hills to a minimum and avoid a sufferfest!

They’ve come up with a great combination of rides.

They are all designed to avoid the busy roads wherever possible and incorporate great scenery and interesting towns, coffee and food stops that capture the unique culture of Girona and the Costa Brava.

These beautiful rides showcase the diversity of Girona’s riding; the region caters superbly well to everyone from beginner cyclists to more seasoned riders.

1. Flaça loop (25km)

Saskia from BikeBreaks Girona Cycle Centre says: “This medieval villages route is the absolute perfect combo of riding a bike and getting the best of culture and history that this area can offer.”

“Passing through an area filled with medieval villages, Roman churches and beautiful mediterranean countryside, you squeeze in great experiences in a day’s easy riding!”

2. Canet d’Adri loop (33km)

Louise from Eat Sleep Cycle says “This route is a short and sweet loop exploring idyllic country lanes to the west of Girona.”

“The route may be short but it also features steep climbs and narrow, technical descents – so it’s perfect for more experienced riders looking for a quick spin which packs a punch.”

“For those looking to take their time there are a couple of points along the route to stop for refreshments – look out for La Barraca de Can Xinet at 12km or Cal Sabater at 17km in the village of Canet d’Adri. Also look out for stunning views of Girona city and of Rocacorba.”

Cyclists cycling around Girona

3. Sant GregorI – Bonmatí loop (38km)

Jana from Girona Pro Sport says: “The start point for this loop is in Devesa park in the centre of Girona.”

“This is a loop for mountain bikes or gravel bikes. It is mostly flat road, without traffic, passing beside the River Ter. One-half of the lap is on famous greenways ”

“It’s a beautiful, peaceful route that’s suitable for beginners and families.”

Cyclist on Sant Gregory loop Girona

4. Calella de Palafrugell loop (39km)

Anna from Trek and Ride says “This circular route from Calella de Palafrugell takes you towards the inland of Baix Empordà where you will swiftly succumb to the charm of the region’s ancient towns.”

“You will come across pretty medieval villages and towns that turn from mere dots on the map to quaint terracotta coloured settlements as you approach. Peratallada and Pals are worth prising yourself away from the beach for. Drift from town to town, stopping off for a glass of the region’s wine and delicious tapas in the tiny local bars.”

Cyclist on an easy cycling route from Girona, Catalonia

5. Girona to Sant Feliu de Guixols (42km)

Eduard from CycleTours Catalonia , says “This is one of the most popular itineraries we offer.”

“The ride takes you from Girona, downhill to the Mediterranean Sea. It follows the green way called “El Carrilet”, along an old railway line, that was used in the past to carry cork from the oak tree forests from les Gavarres, to the harbour of Sant Feliu. Along the route the Gavarres Massif is our constant companion, a mountainous forest area, consisting mainly of oaks.”

The route passes through the towns of Quart, Cassà de la Selva, Llagostera and Santa Cristina d’Aro. At San Feliu de Guíxols, we always suggest cyclists take time to enjoy the seaside and find a restaurant serving a delicious fresh paella. We then pick up our guests and transfer them back to Girona.”

You can hear more from CycleTours Catalonia in this article about gravel cycling in Girona and this article sharing 72 hours cycling in Girona .

6. Volcà de la Crosa loop (51km)

Louise from  Eat Sleep Cycle says: “This route is a perfect introduction for riders getting started with gravel.”

“Start the ride heading out of town south on the Via Verde before cutting across farmland west to Volcà de la Crosa – a protected area of natural interest & the widest volcano crater in Europe. From here ride north to climb up to the village of Mas Llunes on gravel, then head down to Bescano & take the Via Verde back into Girona.”

“There are some climbs but they are never too long or too steep & mountain biking skills are not required! For refreshments stop in Sant Dalmai or Salitja, or book yourself a table for lunch at the Masia de Mas Llunès at the weekend.”

Cyclist on a woodland trail Girona Spain

7. Girona to Llagostera loop (53km)

Eduard from CycleTours Catalonia , says “This route is slightly more demanding than the Girona to Sant Feliu de Guixols route because it is a little more hilly, but overall it’s not too hard. It gives you a beautiful feel for the plain of Emporda, with its apple and peach trees, vineyards and olive groves.”

“You start on the green way, heading in the direction Llagostera. When you pass by Llagostera you leave the green way and head north to Sant Andreu Salou. After Sant Andreu you will go to Quart where you return to Girona by the green way.”

Gravel riding around Girona

8. Girona to Lake Banyoles loop (58km)

Saskia from Bike Breaks Girona Cycle Centre says “We have two road cycling routes that pass from Girona’s old town to the amazing fresh water lake of Banyoles. This is the shorter version that takes you to the lake and back in only 50km.”

“You can have a lovely lunch break by the lake before pedalling back to Girona. It’s a favourite in our shop – and even the pros use it as their rest day ride!”

Cycling near lake Banyoles, Girona

9. Calella de Palafrugell to Tossa del Mar loop (67km)

Anna from Trek and Ride says: “You start in the charming village of Calella de Palafrugell and bike until you arrive in Tossa del Mar, passing along coastal roads to fantastic seaside villages like Palamós and Platja d’Aro.”

“Once in Tossa del Mar, you ride back to Calella de Palafrugell on secondary roads.”

Village of Calalla on an easy cycling route along the coast

10. Els Angèls/Hincapie loop from Girona (68km)

Jana from Girona Pro Sport says: “This is a “must do” ride when you are in Girona as a more experienced cyclist. It’s named after George Hincapie, one of the first pro riders to discover Girona as a perfect place for cycling, training and living.”

“The route starts on Pont de Pedra in the old centre of Girona. Here many cyclists (also a lot of pros) start their ride. The route has two climbs. The first is Girona´s most famous climb, Els Angles. It’s not too long, not too steep, it’s a great place to start. Then you decent into Emporda with its beautiful medieval villages like Monells. The perfect place for a coffee stop!”

“Then you do the Santa Pellaia climb. It’s a bit longer but again not too steep. Then a descent to Cassa de la Selva and via quiet country roads you get back to Girona.”

Arrival in Girona

There is plenty to see and do in this magical historical city. Spend the day visiting the Cathedral, which has the broadest single nave of Gothic architecture in the world and getting lost through the narrow streets of the ancient Jewish quarter, one of the best preserved in the world. We also recommend a stroll along the Rambla or the medieval walls, which gives you a fantastic panoramic view of the city.

cycling tours girona spain

Girona ~ Sant Feliu de Guixols (45km)

The cycle takes you straight to the Mediterranean Sea, following the greenway “El Carrilet”. Just out of Girona, the route passes the coloured houses of Onyar River as well as numerous small Catalan villages. The Gavarres Massif provide an imposing backdrop, a mountainous forested area, consisting mainly of oaks, important for the cork production. Your destination is the Mediterranean and the town of San Feliu de Guíxols.

On the last section you’ll cycle along the greenway called “Ruta del Tren Petit”, connecting Palamós and Palafrugell , with its amazing coastal town.

Booking Conditions

Irish Cycling Safaris Ltd (“the Company”) accepts bookings subject to the following conditions:

  • The contract is between the Company and the client, being any person travelling or intending to travel on a tour operated by the company. The contract, including all matters arising from it, is subject to Irish law and the exclusive jurisdiction of the Irish courts. A booking is accepted and becomes definite only from the date when the company sends a confirmation. It is at this point that a contract between the company and the client comes into existence. Before your booking is confirmed and comes into existence the company reserves the right to increase or decrease brochure prices. The company or their agents reserve the right to decline any booking at their discretion.
  • To secure a booking the Company or their agent requires a completed booking form and the necessary deposit. (Full payment if travel within 60 days). The first named client must be over 18 years of age. Clients booking by telephone, by website/E-mail or fax will be deemed to have signed the booking form and read and accepted our terms of booking. The person signing, or being deemed to sign, the booking form warrants that he/she has full authority to do so on behalf of all persons whose names appear thereon, and confirms that all such persons are fully aware of and accept these conditions.
  • The balance of all monies due, including any surcharges applicable at the time, must be paid to the company or their agents not later than 60 days before departure. In the case of non-payment of the balance by the due date the Company reserves the right to cancel your booking and cancellation charges will apply. If any cheque is dishonoured we reserve the right to charge €25 to cover administration costs.
  • Travel Insurance is mandatory for all clients whilst on a tour organised by the Company. Clients are wholly responsible for arranging their own insurance. Clients are responsible for ensuring that they are in possession of private Travel insurance with protection for the full duration of the tour in respect of at least medical expenses, injury, death, repatriation, cancellation and curtailment, with adequate cover.
  • An administration fee of €25 per booking plus any additional costs incurred will be charged if a confirmed booking is changed or transferred to a different departure date or tour, up to 60 days prior to departure. Thereafter all changes will be treated as cancellations and subject to the relevant charges. Changes are subject to availability. For an administration fee of €25 you may request a credit voucher. This must be redeemed within 12 months of issue and must be used against a new booking. The voucher is non transferable and cannot be exchanged for cash. In certain circumstances, which the Company considers reasonable, the booking may be transferred to another suitable person; however the tour arrangements must remain the same and will only be allowed if all suppliers agree to accept the name change. If a transfer is allowed an administration charge of €25 per person will be charged plus any extra charges levied by suppliers.

Should the client wish to cancel, cancellation charges will be imposed. These are calculated from the day written notification is received by the company or their agent as a percentage of the total tour price, including surcharges as follows:

> 60 days before departure – retention of deposit

60-14 days before departure – 50%

< 14 days before departure – 100%

  • Clients are responsible for arranging, and must be in possession of, a valid passport and any visas and vaccination certificates required for the whole of their journey. Information about these matters or related items (climate, clothing, baggage, personal items etc) is given in good faith but without responsibility on the part of the company.
  • Should the client have a reason to complain, you must immediately notify our representative and the relevant supplier. If the client’s complaint is not dealt with satisfactorily at the time, they must write to us with full details of the complaint within 28 days of the end of the tour. Failure to notify complaints entirely within accordance of this clause will diminish or extinguish the client’s ability to claim compensation.
  • The company provides all services on a “ground only” basis. The client is responsible for arranging their own travel to the designated start points of each tour. The company cannot accept any liability for any delay/cancellation in your transportation and cannot offer any refunds for lost holiday time.
  • Clients agree to accept the authority and decisions of the Company’s employees, tour leaders and agents whilst on the tour with the company. If in the opinion of such persons the health, level of fitness or conduct of a client at any time before or after departure appears likely to endanger the safe, comfortable or happy progress of a tour the client may be excluded from all or part of the tour without refund or recompense. In the case of ill health the company may make such arrangements as it sees fit and recover the costs thereof from the client. If a client commits an illegal act the client may be excluded from the tour and the Company shall cease to have responsibility to/for them. If you are affected by a condition, medical or otherwise, that might affect you or affect other people’s enjoyment or active participation of the tour, you must advise us at the time of booking. No refund will be given for any unused services.

The Company will use its best endeavours to operate all tours as advertised. However, it reserves the right to change any of the facilities, services, prices or itineraries described in our brochure/website. If a major change is necessary or deemed advisable, the company will advise the client as soon as reasonably possible, if there is no time before departure. A major change does not apply to a change of transport or named accommodation, but is usually considered a major change in itinerary or change in duration of a client’s holiday. If advised of a major change before departure, the client will have the choice of accepting changes (at additional cost if applicable), purchasing another available tour from the company, or cancelling the tour with a full refund.

Provided that the major change is not as a result of situations outside the company’s control or consolidation, compensation will be paid as follows:

Notification Period Given / Compensation Per Person

More than 30 days: Nil

14-30 days:  €40

Less than 14 days: €50

  • Force Majeure. We regret we cannot accept liability or pay any compensation where the performance or prompt performance of our contractual obligations is prevented or affected by reasons of circumstance amounting to “force majeure”. In these conditions “force majeure” means any event which we the supplier of services in question could not, even with all due care, foresee or avoid. Such events include war or threat of war, riot, civil strife, industrial dispute, terrorist activity, natural or nuclear disaster, fire or adverse weather conditions, epidemics or health risks and all similar events outside our control.
  • The company reserves the right to cancel a tour in any circumstances but will not cancel a tour less than 4 weeks before departure except for “force majeure”, consolidation, or the client’s failure to pay the final balance. Unless the client fails to pay the final balance, the company, upon cancellation will return all monies paid to it, or offer the client an alternative holiday of comparable standard if available (if less expensive than original we will refund the difference, if more expensive, the client will have to pay the difference). Compensation will not be payable (1) where the company is forced to cancel as a result of unusual and unforeseeable circumstances beyond our control, the consequences of which we could not have avoided even with all due care or (2) where an insufficient number of people book the clients chosen holiday and we notify we are cancelling for this reason not less than 28 days before departure. In all cases our liability is limited to offering the above choices and the compensation payments (where applicable) set out in clause 11. No compensation is payable if we notify you of cancellation more than 8 weeks before departure. We cannot be held responsible for any costs or expenses you may have as a result of cancellation.
  • Client’s bookings are accepted on the understanding that they appreciate the risks inherent in adventure travel and that they undertake the tours featured in our programme at their own volition. Our obligations, and those of any suppliers providing any service or facility involved in any travel arrangements you book with us, are to provide services and facilities with reasonable care and skill. Facilities will be provided to the realistic minimum standard recommended by the regulatory authorities responsible.

Bike Hire: The equipment including all accessories supplied is let out on hire. The equipment remains the property of the company and the Client will not sell, hire out or otherwise part with the possessions thereof.

The Client undertakes not to misuse the equipment and to return it with all accessories in the same condition as when received (ordinary wear and tear accepted). The company shall be entitled to charge the client for any damages caused to equipment during the period of hire. In event of a breakdown, other than a result of the Clients misuse, the company will use its best endeavours to repair or procure repair of the equipment.

The company will not be liable for any damage or loss whatsoever, through breakdown or other defect in the equipment or other circumstances beyond the company’s control. The Client shall indemnify the company with respect to all costs, claims, expenses and demands suffered or incurred which arise directly or indirectly out of the use of the equipment during the period of hire. The company reserves the right to charge the client for partial or full settlement of any claim. In the event of the equipment being stolen or lost, the company reserves the right to call upon the client to indemnify the company the replacement of the equipment. However, should the equipment subsequently be returned in a satisfactory condition, the company undertakes to refund the clients indemnity within 14 days.

The Client will ensure that the equipment is adequately secured when not in use, will not use the equipment whilst under the influence of drink or drugs and will immediately notify the company in the event of breakdown or loss of equipment.

  • Clients bringing their own bikes do so on the proviso that their equipment is in a suitable condition for participation in a tour. Responsibility for maintenance of bicycles brought by clients rests with the client. The company will endeavour to accommodate such clients, but cannot guarantee that correct tools and spares will be available, given the wide range of possibilities that exist.
