14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups

These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

day tours for seniors

The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. The 14 organizations listed below are either aimed specifically at mature clients or feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal tour experience.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for eight to 10 hours.

Senior Cycling

Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling limits groups to a maximum of 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–40 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Firebird Tours

With a focus on clients ages 50 and over, Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the Northern Lights , as well as theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. While tours are open to all ages, the majority of participants tend to be over 50. Guided biking, walking, and hiking tours to a variety of destinations are geared toward adults, but also include options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include trips such as the Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and the Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.

Overseas Adventure Travel

With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian Fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Mature travelers are often attracted to the flexibility of the trips and the ability to personalize activities. Recognizing that many of their customers travel alone — including a whopping 85 percent of their female clients — the company has created its getaways with solo travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.

EF Go Ahead Tours

Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. The senior-friendly trips focus on interests such as food and wine, adventure, and safaris, as well as specific destinations and seasonal events (think Oktoberfest in Germany, annual holiday markets in Europe, or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland). Traveling alone? The company's solo tours provide private rooms and personalized experiences especially geared toward those traveling by themselves. Clients can also gather their own group and take advantage of the services of EF's professional coordinators.

Kensington Tours

If you're looking to create a fully customized, privately guided trip based on your group's specific needs and travel preferences, look no further than Kensington Tours . Their expertise in more than 100 destinations worldwide makes planning easy, whether the goal is a culturally immersive experience, enjoying fine wine and dining, discovering the history of a place, or relaxation. While these arrangements are ideal for mature travelers who appreciate ease and luxury, the company also provides experiences for multigenerational travel in countries like Thailand, Japan, Iceland, and South Africa, featuring kid-friendly trips that come with private vehicles, local guides, and dining options fit for the whole family.

Intrepid Travel

A leading adventure tour operator known for its efforts to make travel accessible to all, Intrepid Travel offers a good mix of bespoke and ready-made itinerary options that can be adapted to suit your group's comfort level. Intrepid's Accessible Tours are especially inclusive, with trips that are designed for every type of traveler. Whichever trip you decide to book, you'll have access to local destination specialists to help you choose the perfect places to stay as well as organize transportation, activities, and guided tours, depending on your needs. The company's Walking & Trekking trips, suitable for a range of fitness levels, are especially popular with seniors, though adults of all ages are free to join in.

YMT Vacations

In business since 1967, YMT Vacations designs all-inclusive trips with mature travelers in mind. Prices cover hotel accommodations, guided sightseeing tours, baggage handling, and the expertise of tour directors and driver guides. Destinations include Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, North America, Central and South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, among others, and the company arranges travel for popular events such as the Rose Parade in California. A number of river cruise and transatlantic sailing options are also available.

Grand European Travel

Grand European Travel is an AARP-preferred travel provider (check the website for members-only discounts) that promotes itself as a one-stop shop to help clients plan their desired travel experiences. The company represents a collection of 30 travel brands — including the likes of Trafalgar and Insight Tours — which, altogether, cover seven continents. Offerings range from budget to luxury getaways, and everything from cruises to land tours. Thinking of taking a multigenerational trip? Browse the company's family experiences section, stocked with tours fit for all ages, whether you're into all-inclusive European river cruises or exploring U.S. national parks.

Country Walkers

Country Walkers aims to introduce travelers to new landscapes and cultures around the world by traveling on foot. Established in 1979, the Vermont-based operator offers walking tours in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. Tour types include guided (in a small group of up to 18) and self-guided (in a private group of up to 12), providing a great option for independent exploration. Travelers can choose from five levels, starting at "easy walking," which includes a daily distance of two to six miles for up to four hours per day. "Moderate walking," the mid-range option, suggests four to 10 miles and up to six hours of walking per day. Trips at the "challenging walking" level might go up to seven hours a day on foot, covering anywhere from six to 14 miles. Guests of all ages should be able to find a destination and tour that's best suited for their interests and fitness level.

Because Trafalgar’s customer base is international, tour participants are likely to be English-speaking citizens of a variety of countries—a plus for North Americans who would enjoy traveling with people from all over the globe. Trafalgar has a “Very Important Traveler” program that offers 5% savings on selected trips. For solo travelers, the cost of a single supplement depends on the trip. Optional experiences on each tour cost extra but also offer the flexibility to create your own custom tour: You may opt out of the activity and choose to do something else—or just relax.

The seniors-only company prides itself in taking travelers off the beaten track with immersive “Day in the Life” experiences such as shopping at local markets, visiting children at school, and taking part in home-hosted meals. OAT opts for accommodations that offer authentic local experiences—think smaller family-run hotels, paradores , and hotels close to city centers.

Both land and small-ship tours for seniors are available. Most trips last two weeks or more, with optional pre- and post-trip extensions, appealing to retirees and working people who have saved vacation time as well as travel funds. The physical requirements of each tour are described in detail, with an activity level rating system of one (easy) to five (strenuous). Each itinerary outlines the included meals and local tours; optional tours require an additional fee, but the itineraries also recommend many free or inexpensive options for your free time.

BRING THE GRANDCHILDREN:   8 Grandparent-Grandkid Vacations for Active Seniors

OAT has made itself a leader in solo travel: More than a quarter of its senior citizen clients are solo travelers, and of those, 85% are women. Roughly 92% of its single spaces are free of any singles surcharge, others are heavily discounted, and the company also offers a roommate matching program. In 2019, OAT began offering some women-only departures.

While not a cut-rate tour company, OAT works hard to provide senior tours at low per diems—giving you more for your travel dollar. The Travel Channel recognized it as a top provider for budget-conscious travelers, and the Grand Circle Foundation received a Global Vision award for leadership in tourism and philanthropy.

Lodgings are always comfortable and “sometimes even iconic.”

Road Scholar programs include theme-based travel (such as arts, philosophy and religion, and nature studies), outdoor adventures, service learning trips, adventures afloat, intergenerational tours, and independent city discoveries. Activity levels for tours range from “easy-going” to “outdoor: challenging,” with the physical demands of each tour described in its itinerary. An “easy” tour might cover a week of Chautauqua lectures in New York, while a “challenging” tour might include hiking and kayaking in Alaska.

Nearly 25% of Road Scholars are traveling solo; the senior tour company offers some discounts on single rooms, provides supportive advice to women traveling solo, and emphasizes “learning in the company of a small group of individual friends, rather than traveling with a collection of couples.”  Road Scholar travelers tend to be curious and open to new ideas and cultures. The travel company recently added a virtual Adventures Online series of in-depth lectures for those who wish to supplement an in-person journey or simply learn from home.

At least one expert accompanies each tour or stay, providing lectures and local tours appropriate to the destination. High-quality accommodations are included in the price and reflect the character of the local culture.

Smithsonian also provides special interest tours for older travelers, including study at Oxford, cave art exploration, and observation of the total solar eclipse in 2024. Its Cultural Stays allow travelers to “unpack once” and spend from one to three weeks exploring and learning in and around a single destination.

A branch of the 175-year-old Smithsonian Institution, Smithsonian Journeys has operated tours for more than 50 years. Its wide range of travel options appeals to many age groups, but the average age of travelers with this company is 55+. (The typical age range on active tours is 45 to 70; on special interest tours, it’s 55 to 80.) Established more than 90 years ago, Globus heads a family of travel brands that also includes Avalon Waterways (river tours) and Cosmos (budget tours). The company offers travel styles for a variety of fitness levels and interests, with an emphasis on freedom and flexibility that works especially well for seniors. It ranks among the best escorted tour companies for the 55+ age group because it recognizes that the one-size-fits-all mentality does not work for everyone, especially older travelers.

FOODIE VACATIONS:   9 Best Companies for Culinary Tours

Free time on every tour allows for “adventure a la carte.” A wide array of optional excursions and activities is offered on each itinerary: some are extra-cost activities provided by the company, while others are simply helpful suggestions for independent exploration. Globus provides tour directors and local guides from the region for every tour, as well as “skip the lines” access to sites, centrally located first-class hotels, opportunities to meet local families, and some “experiential dining” meals.

Globus tours come in many different formats. Globus Undiscovered tours take you off the beaten path where there are fewer crowds; this option is attractive to seasoned travelers who have already seen famous sights like the Tower of Pisa and the Mona Lisa. Escapes by Globus offers up to a 40% discount on tours taken between November and March. Choice Touring and Independence by Globus provide itineraries that allow you to choose excursions and have more “I-time” while the company provides lodging and the help of a tour director.

Tour styles include “ Basix ” for the budget travel crowd and “ Comfort ,” which tends to attract older travelers. The travel tour company also offers retreats and tours for women, solo travelers, and the 18-29 age group. Note that while Intrepid tours are active, its tours are “not a constant endurance test.” A general level of health and fitness is adequate for its trips.

HIT THE TRAILS: 9 Best Tour Companies for Walking, Trekking, and Hiking Tours

Examples of Intrepid tours include a winter journey to Iceland to view the Aurora Borealis, a hiking-cycling trip in Sri Lanka, snorkeling in Bali, kayaking in Alaska, and enjoying the Naadam Festival in Mongolia or Day of the Dead in Mexico. People dining onboard a Viking River Cruise ship with beautiful water and forest in the background

Viking River Cruises specializes in European river touring, but it also offers small ship ocean cruises and expedition voyages. The company is more than 25 years old and is among the most awarded river cruise lines worldwide. Viking owns and operates its own ships; it also owns some dock locations.

SINGLE TRAVEL: 10 Best Tour Companies for Solo Travelers

Viking does not try to be all things to all people. There are no casinos on its river boats, for example, nor are children under 18 allowed. Viking also has a “no nickel and diming and no umbrella drinks” policy. However, you can expect outside rooms, onboard enrichment lectures, destination performances, onshore excursions in every port, introductions to local life and people, and an experienced staff. (In fact, 90% of the company’s river cruise staff returns each year.) Optional pre- and post-tour land extensions are offered.

With a philosophy that travel “should be a doorway to cultural insight and personal enrichment,” Viking could be regarded as a waterborne version of Road Scholar or Smithsonian Journeys. More Senior Travel Tour Company Options for Older Travelers

If you can’t see yourself in any of the senior tour styles I’ve mentioned above—or maybe you just want even more options—I have a few more recommendations.

1) Those who loved travel experiences in their student days and prefer an inexpensive tour may want to look at EF Go Ahead Tours .

2) Those who are physically fit and want active travel like cycling tours and walking tours with a mixed age group have many good options, including Backroads and Country Walkers , which can be a good fit for senior cycling and walking enthusiasts.

College graduates should check to see if their alumni association sponsors any tours: AHI , Odysseys Unlimited , and other companies work with these associations to provide excellent tours at good prices.

Finally, seniors planning a multigenerational family vacation or skip-gen trip with the grandkids should consider a company like Adventures by Disney , which is a hit with all ages.

Senior Travel Tours & Travel Guide

Senior Travel Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Traveling in your golden years can be very rewarding. Unique and active educational and cultural experiences are waiting to be discovered at your own pace. Destinations that may have once seemed too remote or exotic are now accessible via multiple options.

A wide variety of tours are available to older travelers — from relaxing river cruises through the heart of Europe to coach tours around Australia and more active pursuits like going on an African safari .

Senior Vacation Packages are Tailored for Older Travelers

With more time and resources, senior travelers can fully indulge their passions and curiosities by enjoying memorable travel experiences. Responding to the growing demand from older adventurers , tour operators, including small ship and river cruise lines, are tailoring their offerings to cater to senior needs and interests.

Today, tour companies are evolving rapidly to provide sophisticated and enriching experiences, offering amenities such as accessible accommodations, leisurely-paced itineraries, knowledgeable guides, and on-board medical assistance.

They ensure that senior citizen group tours are no longer synonymous with crowded buses but rather personalized journeys for discerning seniors.

Senior Citizen Tours Offer Authentic Experiences

Tours for senior citizens offer authentic experiences that create lasting memories, sparing travelers the hassle of planning every detail themselves. With a focus on providing expert guidance, these travel providers offer a diverse range of adventures.

Whether it’s an adventure like an African safari or a visit to Machu Picchu or a small ship expedition to the Galapagos , trips catering to seniors usually feature less physically demanding itineraries and accessible accommodations, with a greater emphasis on authentic cultural and culinary experiences.

Europe , mainly the UK and Central Europe, is a popular destination for seniors, offering a mix of ancient history, food, views, and architecture. River cruises provide a luxurious yet active way to explore Europe's iconic cities. At the same time, walking tours in places like Vienna appeal to those interested in classical music.

In North America , US and Canadian national parks and Mexican and Central American archaeological and natural treasures beckon. In the northeastern US, seniors can enjoy the spectacular fall colors and explore museums dedicated to the revolutionary history of the region.

Birding tours are also gaining popularity among seniors, offering opportunities to spot elusive species in destinations like British Columbia, Costa Rica, the Amazon, and Britain, guided by professional photographers and fellow enthusiasts.

Best Senior Travel Destinations

US National Parks present an excellent opportunity for multi-generational travel. They are easy to visit on a budget while still being comfortable.

Alaska is ideal for small-ship cruising. This is a great way to visit an adventurous, rugged land while enjoying a certain level of comfort. The wildlife viewing in Alaska is unmatched. Photographers and whale-watching enthusiasts will love this destination.

See Alaska small ship cruises »

The Caribbean is another popular cruise destination for senior travelers. The warm weather is a great appeal, and many different cruise lines offer trips in the Caribbean, so there's a lot of choice.

European River Cruises are great for seniors who want an easy way to see many countries in one trip. River cruises can dock at smaller ports, giving travelers a glimpse of more hidden gems of Europe.

The United Kingdom attracts many senior travelers for its history and charm. Senior travelers enjoy everything from English country gardens to the rugged landscapes of Ireland on guided tours through the UK .

Southeast Asia beckons budget travelers interested in a trip where relaxing beaches and ancient temples can be enjoyed on the same day.

Kenya is perfect for senior travelers after a luxury safari. It is often called the "oldest" safari destination, and this region's safari operators take that to heart.

South Africa is another fantastic place for safari goers after something more budget-friendly. South Africa is also great for history buffs.

Joining a tour group doesn’t have to mean fighting for elbow space. Instead, look into small group tours for seniors that offer a more intimate experience.

For example, check out the Total Boston Small Group Day Tour With a Local Guide . Though it’s open for all ages, this tour is small enough that you can interact with your guide. You can ask all your burning questions and make friends along the way. You’ll dig into the food scene in the North End, explore Faneuil Hall, and admire the city’s architecture. And if you’re lucky, you just may bowl a strike at the neighborhood bowling alley!

During your stay, book one of the hotels in Boston .

Bring your appetite to Denver. Celebrated as a major foodie destination, Denver is gaining in popularity for its eateries. Get ready to take a bite out of this city when you sign up for the Downtown Denver Food Tour ! Between a stop at the butcher shop and a slice of Neapolitan pizza, you’ll get the scoop on the best cuisine in town. Nosh on gourmet hot dogs and sample famous cheese. Along the way, your tour guide will bring you to famous landmarks and recount the city’s history, too.

While you’re in town, check out Denver hotels and stay a while.

The tour does involve hiking, so check the physical requirements before signing up. While you’re at it, take a look at other Grand Circle Travel options, as this company has some of the best senior travel tours.

The perks of traveling with Intrepid

A traveller dancing to a band playing local folk music in Bursa, Turkey

Authentic experiences with a local leader

It's all well and good sticking to the tourist trail, but anyone can Google that. We work exclusively with local leaders – because who better to show you the soul of a destination than someone who lives and breathes the culture? With insider knowledge of hidden hangouts, local legends and, most importantly, the dishes you won't find on the tourist menu, you'll go behind the scenes for a deeper, more culturally-rich experience.

A group of travellers making a toast at dinner in Menaggio, Italy

A small group of ready-made friends

Traveling solo is fun, but we think it's even better with a small group of like-minded travelers just as eager to explore as you are. Our trips are for people of all ages and from all walks of life, from the rookie backpacker straight out of uni to retirees on a mission to tick off everything on their bucket lists. The diversity keeps things interesting – not to mention the new perspectives to uncover, stories to share and friendships to forge.

A traditional tram travelling up a narrow street in Lisbon

Safety, logistics and convenience

Traveling to a new place is exciting, but it can also be daunting. There's an itinerary to plan, accommodation to book and logistics to navigate – not to mention language barriers and border crossings. We're sure you could handle any situation, but it's reassuring to rock up and know that everything's been taken care of. Your leader will also keep you clued up on cultural do's and don'ts and help you avoid tourist traps so you can sit back and enjoy the ride.

Pick your own style of travel

Whether it's for finger-lickin' food, the freedom of the mountains or rare wildlife encounters, people travel for different reasons. That’s why we’ve created a  range of travel themes and styles . From our Basix style with simple accommodation and plenty of free time to our Premium trips featuring our best stays, experiences and leaders (with our Original and Comfort styles in between), there's something to suit every Intrepid traveler.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travelers?

Intrepid adventures are for travelers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're traveling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m travelling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

Learn more about solo travel

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travelers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

Inclusive and Fun Day Trips For Seniors

senior couple in car leaving for a day trip

One of the best things about getting older is retirement. If all goes well, you will have some money saved up, some free time, and the chance to use that to go off and enjoy yourself for a while. The kids have left home, you have few responsibilities, and the wisdom to put all that free time to proper use.

The downside, however, is that while you may have time and money, they often don’t have the energy they once did. That saying about youth being wasted on the young is very true!

Nights out may be too rowdy, and it’s hard to have fun when, in your mind, most of the people in the venue with you look like they should still be at school! Adventure days out may put too much strain on the joints or be too much activity for certain family members.

Here are a few of my top picks for inclusive, fun and relaxing day trips for seniors.

senior couple relaxing at the spa

A Super Spa Day

Spa days are something that all the adults in the family can enjoy. They are a good chance to disconnect from the world and treat yourself to a bit of pampering.

If you’re stressed out at work, your daughter is struggling at college and you know that grandma hasn’t been taking good care of herself, why not spend an afternoon getting a manicure, pedicure , moisturizing facial and massage? You’ll all feel amazing afterwards.

Spa treatments can be fun for the men, too. Saunas, steam rooms and hot stone massages don’t discriminate. Everyone can enjoy them, and they’re the sort of thing that people rarely buy for themselves. If you’re looking for a senior gift experience that will make your loved ones feel great, find a local spa, book a luxurious vehicle to go there in, and enjoy feeling like royalty for the day.

senior friends on a sightseeing tour

Sightseeing Coaches or River Cruises

A day trip to a big city doesn’t have to be exhausting. You can often see the sights of big cities on an open-topped coach, take some great photos with your digital camera , make some memories, and learn all about the city without having to walk further than from the car park to the coach. Some areas have afternoon river cruises and these are even more fun since they often include meal service.

This kind of sightseeing trip offers a good chance to see a new place and also get some quality bonding time in with your loved ones. If you book a trip for early in the day you can then take the afternoon to go visit the most interesting places on foot.

Book in advance and the tickets for these trips are typically affordably priced. Trips can vary in length from an hour up to a full afternoon, so do your homework before you schedule one.

Watch the Big Game

There’s something infectious about the enthusiasm that people feel for sports. Even if you aren’t a sporty senior yourself, if you pick a nice warm day to go to a sporting event, and have good seats, you’ll likely find that the vibe at the game is so good that you’ll have fun anyway. If you have someone with you who can explain the rules, it’s even better.

There’s more than just the game, too. Head to your end of season college football game and there will be mascots, cheerleaders, bands and other spectacles to enjoy at the same time. Buy some junk food, enjoy a drink, and soak up the atmosphere. It’s enough to make you feel young again!

Hands on Museums

When most people think of museums and art galleries , they think of boring, stuffy places where all the exhibits are behind glass. Yes, if your loved ones are particularly fascinated by a specific artist or a period of history, they might want to go to a museum devoted to that, but there are plenty of educational places out there that are far more fun and appealing these days.

Take a trip to a ‘living museum’ where people wear traditional attire and play the roles of traditional jobs. Head to a hands-on museum where you can learn by doing, or go to an architectural site and watch as a dig is being performed.

There are chocolate factories and breweries that will let you try to make your own items to take away with you, and there are many history museums where you can dress up yourself for photos, and really ‘feel a part of history’.

This kind of day trip works for the whole family. The key here is to make a day out of the visit, rather than trying to do the science museum in the morning and the art gallery in the afternoon. Get a leisurely start, explore one place well, stop off for a meal, and consider that a successful day before the kids get cranky and your older relatives get tired.

That’s our top tip for a successful school day trip out.

Seasonal or Festive Markets

If you’re looking for a shorter trip, then why not head out to a seasonal or festive market? A trip to the beach during the summer or to see some Christmas lights and go shopping in November/December makes for a fun outing that gets everyone into the right spirit for that time of year.

It’s a chance to buy some Easter eggs or Christmas gifts for the family , pick up some fine foods, and admire the bric-a-brac on the stalls, even if you don’t buy much. Book a Greyhound trip to a nearby city with a good market and you can enjoy a weekend away without breaking the bank.

This kind of trip will involve some walking but it doesn’t have to be a lot. If the hustle and bustle of the market gets to be too much, then you can always find a quiet cafe to relax in or retire back to the hotel for some rest.

Tribute Bands

Tickets to big shows can run into the hundreds of dollars sometimes, and those big shows are noisy, crowded, rowdy and not really a place that a lot of seniors will want to be. By the time the opener is done and the main attraction comes on, even a lot of younger fans are getting restless.

Tribute bands offer a more intimate, chilled out, affordable and  fun experience. They have another advantage too. It’s likely that your grandfather doesn’t know who PVRIS is, but they may well have happy memories of AC/DC from their college days.

Take them to see a tribute band and they can reminisce about their misspent youth and enjoy a party atmosphere in a more relaxed setting.

Seniors Know How to Have Fun

Planning a trip with an elderly person doesn’t have to mean stuffy museums, silent art galleries, and markets full of crafts. Talk to that senior citizen in your life, and see what they would like to do. They might surprise you!

Seniors like to party, try new things, and explore too. The challenge that they often face with traveling is limited mobility and energy. Many of the conditions that affect people as they age, including diabetes and arthritis , make prolonged periods of exertion difficult. Work around that, and you can all have a good time.

Plan your activities with plenty of downtime between them so you aren’t rushing from attraction to attraction. If you get through your bucket list quickly, you can always take a detour. If anyone in your party needs a break, then it won’t lead to people feeling stressed out or guilty that people are ‘missing out on fun’ because of them.

From captivating cultural encounters to picturesque landscapes that soothe the soul, these trips are thoughtfully designed to cater to the needs and desires of a variety of travelers.

Let’s delve into the transformative power of unhurried travel, where the emphasis lies not on ticking off landmarks on a checklist but on relishing each intricate moment of life. Slow-paced tours can rekindle the sense of wonder, create lasting memories, and open doors to unforeseen adventures for seniors seeking a new chapter in their travel story.

Why Choose a Slow-Paced Tour

While fast-paced travel might suit some, unhurried trips offer a host of unique advantages that make them an increasingly popular choice among those that enjoy stopping and smelling the roses.

Appreciate the Journey

Slow-paced tours encourage you to savor the experience fully. Rather than rushing from one attraction to another, you have the time to absorb the culture, history, and beauty of each destination. This unhurried approach allows you to develop a deeper connection with the places you visit, fostering a profound sense of appreciation for the voyage itself.

Enjoy Relaxed Itineraries

Slow-paced tours are thoughtfully designed with leisurely itineraries that prioritize comfort and enjoyment over rushed sightseeing. Ample free time allows you to explore destinations at your own pace, take breaks when needed, and even indulge in spontaneous moments of discovery.

Embrace Accessibility and Inclusivity

These tours often consider the accessibility needs of seniors, ensuring that the destinations and activities are senior-friendly. They take into account mobility concerns and offer accommodations that cater to varying physical abilities, making the trip more enjoyable for all participants.

Forge Meaningful Connections

With a more relaxed pace, you have the chance to interact with locals and fellow travelers in a more meaningful way. The unhurried environment fosters camaraderie and allows for deeper conversations, creating opportunities for friendships and lasting memories.

Experience Authentic Culture

Slow-paced tours often veer away from the crowded tourist traps, providing a chance to experience the authentic culture of a place. You can indulge in local cuisines, witness traditional customs, and partake in unique activities that might not be possible on fast-paced tours.

Reduce Stress and Fatigue

Traveling at a slower pace can significantly reduce the stress and fatigue commonly associated with rushed trips. This approach is especially beneficial as it allows you to maintain your energy levels and enjoy the experience to the fullest.

Immerse in Nature’s Beauty

These tours often include visits to serene natural landscapes, where you can bask in the tranquility of breathtaking scenery. Whether it’s a scenic countryside, a peaceful coastal town, or a majestic mountain range, slow-paced tours provide ample time to appreciate the beauty of nature.

Accommodate Special Interests

Slow-paced tours can be tailored to cater to specific interests, such as art, history, wildlife, or wellness. You can choose tours that align with your passions.

Finding the Right Balance

Margaret Manning, the founder of Sixty & Me and an avid traveler, reflects on the differences between slow-paced and fast-paced traveling.

Years ago, I had the opportunity to join Road Scholar on a trip to Prague. On this adventure, I learned just how fun group travel can be. Every day had a theme, which I loved. At the same time, the formal activities weren’t overwhelming. I had time to walk alone. I discovered secret parks. I wandered through tiny shops and expansive gardens. And, of course, I made plenty of new friends.

Shortly after my Road Scholar trip, I completed a one-month train journey around Northern Europe. This second trip was much more fast-paced. In 10 days, I traveled 6,000 kilometers and visited 12 cities. I traveled by train, car, boat, and bike. I stayed in a new hotel every 2 days. It was an amazing experience… if a little tiring.

My goal on both of these trips was to inspire the women in our community to step out of their comfort zones and consider alternative travel options.

One of the questions that I asked myself over and over again, as I worked my way around Europe, was whether I was pushing too hard. Was I trying to see too much? Would it have been better if I had taken it easy and “stopped to smell the roses” more often?

Obviously, there is no “right” or “wrong” answer to this question. Both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages.

On the one hand, like many women over 60, I feel a great deal of pressure to see as much as I can in the time that I have left. On the other hand, if I am honest, sprinting from place to place is harder on my body and mind than it used to be.

Does Road Scholar Offer the Best Blend of Fast and Slow-Paced Travel?

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that Road Scholar is actually an amazing blend of fast and slow-paced travel. On the one hand, all of their programs offer intellectually stimulating activities. They keep your mind buzzing (sometimes spinning) with new ideas.

On the other hand, they don’t force you to go beyond a comfortable pace. If you want to take part in the optional activities, you can. If you want to use your free time to sit at a local café and watch the people passing by, this is also completely fine.

Perhaps this was the main lesson that I learned on my most recent trips.

There is no “right” or “wrong” way to travel. There is no “too fast” or “too slow. There is only the pace that we need at a certain time in our lives.

Sometimes we need intensity. Other times, we need intimacy. The trick is to take the time to evaluate where we are in our lives and to choose our travel adventures consciously.

Gmarie

I just returned from a two week group travel tour of Ireland and Scotland. Although it was wonderful, I found the fast pace and constantly being on the go stressful and tiring. I am a 70 yo female in good health and fit! Plus, I caught Covid for the first time ever and although fairly mild, it still took its toll and I spent the majority of the trip wearing a mask. As a result of my experience, I had decided over the course of the trip that any future trips I take will be slower paced and immersive. This article is spot on!

Sandra Roussy

Hi Gmarie, I’m so sorry Covid put a damper on your trip to Ireland and Scotland. Slow paced tours are definitely an excellent way to discover new places without feeling rushed and pressured. 7 Day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Camping Tour

I had a great time on the 7 day Southwest Highlights Tour. Our group of 12 was a mix of couples, friends and solo travellers (half camping, half in hotel lodging) who bonded over the course of the week to become a really tight group who had a lot of fun together. We had Dylan as our guide and he was excellent: easygoing and friendly, a great DJ for the long van rides, with an endless supply of hilarious stories and suggestions to make the most of the trip. He went above and beyond, with group dinners in beautiful locations, after dark campfires and a sunrise walk at the Grand Canyon for those who wanted to be up early on the last day! The camping experience was great: good equipment, nice campsites for most stops and plenty of food options. The national parks visited are just beautiful - you think you've seen the best, and then you visit the next one and it's equally beautiful, but in completely different way. Bryce Canyon and Antelope Canyon were real highlights for me, probably because I didn't know anything about them in advance and was just blown away. Thanks again to Dylan and to Bindlestiff!

Hiking Sequoia, Kings Canyon, and Yosemite

Hard working and efficient CEO. Camping sites were ok - facilities not working well. Stated iteniary changes - hiking options (unavoidable) and drop off at end of tour (would have been helpful to know sooner). Beautiful area to experience - some hikes too difficult for me unfortunately. I will look more closely at the rating in the future.

Yellowstone and Grand Tetons Adventure

Tim was a great tour guide. He was knowledgeable, helpful, and always upbeat. Time with the wildlife expert was phenomenal. the tour itself was excellent. The good ranking has to do with communications from Intrepid Travel, which were poor and lead to changed air flights and other headaches.

Yellowstone / Grand Teton 4 Day / 3 Night Wildlife Adventure

This trip was fantastic! The group totaled 4 plus the guide Cade. We were not disappointed in wildlife viewing. We saw Black wolves, elk, big horn sheep and bison were up close and personal. Cade is an excellent guide and the trip would not have been the same without him. Cade knows both Teton and Yellowstone National parks like the back of his hand. He answers all questions and is an easy person to be around. Did I mention black bears, moose, Old Faithful and more. Fantastic trip! For birders, the bald eagle feasting on carcass and several other raptors. But, communication from Brushbuck is only when necessary for them. Don't let it stop you though. Hotels were luxe and transportation too. Loved it!

American Parks Trail (Classic, End Denver, 9 Days)

The Tour Director and driver were first class, keeping us both very amused, and very safe. Some of the downsides were due to the weather, at times, which nothing could be done about, so we got on with it. Some of the main downs were due to my naivety, in thinking some facilities (like cash paying taxis from SLC airport; I persuaded a friendly Uber driver to accept cash!) were what I was used to, and that I wouldn't have to re-enter security when changing planes from LHR to SLC, at PHX, even though I was on a connecting, booked, flight, and my baggage had already been labelled for both airports appropriately, at LHR. Altogether, a very good, and memorable holiday, where I visited some parts of the Parks that I visited before, but saw many more, and different sights in them.

What people love about USA Tours for Seniors

We thoroughly enjoyed the 7-day tour of the US southwest . We love the destinations included in the tour, every place we visited is on our bucket list. I wanted to pinch myself every day that I visited those iconic and beautiful places as shown in my photos below. We enjoyed all the extra, optional experiences that were suggested by the tour guide. They added more fun to the tour. The Hummer tour in Moab, Utah was one of the optional experiences and it was a blast! Not only it’s fun, you get to see the amazing scenery during the sunset. One previous review mentioned he or she was forced to participate in the Navajo taco dinner in Monument Valley. That comment is not true. You have a choice not to do that and the guide can make a different arrangement for you. The optional Navajo taco dinner is one of the highlights of the tour that we will remember for a long time. It would be a shame not to have this cultural experience when you get to meet Navajo people when you are in the Navajo Nation! Our tour guide, John did a fantastic job. He was full of enthusiasm and energy. He kept the tour well organized and always provided information we needed. We highly recommend the tour.
What a lifetime experience everyone needs Jun 2023 • Solo Within 7 days, we drove in 3 states, visited 5 national parks / 2 state parks, hiked 60 miles, made friends from 7 different states/nations, and eventually traveled through the iconic Route 66 back to Las Vegas. • Dates & Prices

This short Moscow tour will give you a true taste of the history, culture and incomparable urban vibe that define one of the world’s largest metropolises. In just three days, this Moscow itinerary takes in all the most iconic sights of this attraction-packed destination. After two and half days getting acquainted with the city, we’ve set time aside for you to explore Moscow your way and discover your own favourite hang-outs in a city overflowing with hidden treasures

3-Day Moscow Tour Highlights:

  • Panoramic Tour of Moscow: See Moscow beyond the postcard images on a private excursion by car through the city streets including a drive along the banks of the Moskva River. Visit the famous Bolshoi Theatre, pass by Gorky Park and the Novodevichy Convent, and admire the city from on high at the Sparrow Hill observation platform.
  • Moscow Historical City Centre Guided Walking Tour : Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of one of the world’s biggest metropolises and discover local haunts on foot, including the Red Square, the Kremlin and the multi-coloured domes of St Basil’s Cathedral.
  • Armory Chamber tour: Explore the endless treasures of this unique museum, displaying the wealth accumulated by Russian rulers from the 12th century until the October Revolution of 1917. Walking through the exhibition halls is a journey through the centuries.
  • Moscow Metro Tour : Go deep underground on a subway tour of the famous Moscow metro. The world’s deepest metro system is renowned for its palatial, art-adorned stations, complete with marble columns and chandeliers.

On your first day, you’ll be treated to a panoramic, drive-by tour of Moscow to get a feel for the immense scale of one of the world’s most rapidly developing urban centres. The city’s history unfolds in real-time as you pass lavish imperial mansions, solemn Soviet structures and luxurious modern shopping centres.

Day two kicks off exploring Moscow’s historic centre on foot, followed by a tour of the Kremlin, the seat of Russian power and political intrigue for centuries. Stand in the Red Square, surrounded by the stunning architecture as you hear stories of the people and events behind many of Moscow’s most iconic landmarks.

On your final day, we’ll head beneath the city for a tour of the Moscow Metro and its famously ornate underground stations. Art lovers should hit up one of Moscow’s many world-class galleries such as the Tretyakov State Gallery, the Pushkin Museum or Garage, Moscow’s cutting-edge contemporary art museum. History fans can follow a Soviet trail through the city including Stalin’s Bunker, while those seeking a more indulgent experience can browse trendy neighbourhoods like Kitay Gorod or shop for everything from fashion to kitsch souvenirs at the enchanting Izmaylovo Flea Market. Foodies can head to one of the countless speciality stores sampling vodka, caviar and chocolate.

If you only have a few days to spend in Moscow, this tour will ensure you make the most of your time in the city. Let the experts navigate you through this complex and occasionally overwhelming capital, giving you plenty of time to soak up the city’s most unmissable attractions.

Russia Moscow Tour

Day 1 Panoramic city tour

Welcome to the glorious capital of Russia, Moscow! You’ll be met by your driver at the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel.

After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.

You’ll enjoy a panoramic drive along the Moskva River, where a huge, controversial state of Peter the Great was erected. Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent, and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills, for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.

Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical city centre. Stroll through the Red Square, the hub of cultural life in Moscow, with its elaborate ‘stone flower’ fountain and fantasy-like St Basil’s Cathedral – a postcard-perfect symbol of the nation. Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.

Break for lunch before continuing on a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, famous of its collection of tsarist fashion, with regalia such as jewel-encrusted crowns, orbs and sceptres as well as arms and armour, exotic gifts from the leaders of faraway lands, and an illustrious case of Imperial Faberge eggs.

As an option* spend an evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the stunning sights and city lights of this mesmerising metropolis by night.

Day 3 Metro and Arbat Street

Start a day with a tour of Metro, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. Take a stroll along Old Arbat street - the most famous street in Moscow. Through the centuries Arbat used to be one of the most bohemian places in Moscow. Today Arbat is a promenade full of small cozy cafes and street life.

The afternoon is free for you to either enjoy the rest of the day on your own or choose among optional excursions to explore more of Moscow. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery or Pushkin State Museum to admire Russian art. Join locals for a stroll at the Gorky or VDNH park.

Visit beautiful Kolomeskoye Estate or Izmailovo Kremlin, or spend a day exploring the beautiful city of the Golden Ring (Russian province) - Sergiev Posad. In the evening you will be transferred to the airport for your departure to your next destination.

Senior Friendly Day Trips Southern California

Senior-Friendly Southern California Day Trips. Below are some great day trips for seniors. These trips offer a slightly slower pace and plenty of places to sit and relax while taking in the scenery. Popular options for seniors include bus tours or a train journey aboard Amtrak. I selected all these destinations for seniors to escape their daily routine and enjoy an adventure. I hope every reader enjoys them, no matter their age.

Old Towne Orange

Take a Stroll Old Towne Orange

In Orange County, California, Old Town District is the perfect destination for a weekend day trip when all you want to do is wander. Old Town Orange will not disappoint, with bric-a-brac antique stores tucked neatly between cozy sidewalk restaurants and bubbling fountains. Most of the district’s points of interest are near the central plaza, which has plenty of free street parking.

Sherman Gardens Corona Del Mar Day Trip

Smell the Roses Sherman Gardens

Everything from exotic orchids to a California pepper tree is on display. Desert cactus, herbs, and, of course, a fantastic and super-fragrant Rose Garden are lovingly nurtured by the gardeners on staff. The on-site Café Jardin Restaurant offers handmade crepes, freshly baked pastries, and other goodies to make stopping at the gardens worthwhile. Sherman Gardens is easily walkable, and plenty of places to sit and enjoy nature.

Pacific Surfliner Train in California

Take a Trip on the Surfliner

A trip on the Pacific Surfliner can be as simple as a few miles to San Diego or Santa Barbara. Almost every train station along the route has an exciting attraction within walking distance. Popular stops include Mission San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente Pier, Old Town San Diego, and State Street Santa Barbara. Onboard snack bars and bathrooms make the train convenient for older and younger passengers.

Mission San Juan Capistrano Day Trip

Visit Mission San Juan Capistrano

Mission Capistrano is a good choice for a senior-friendly day trip. Tour buses and almost hourly train service make getting to the mission easy. Explore the mission’s beautiful gardens and historic buildings. In the spring, swallows migrate thousands of miles from their winter homes to San Juan Capistrano. There are plenty of nearby dining and shopping opportunities. If you still have some energy to burn off after the mission, I highly recommend visiting the nearby Los Rios Historic District .

Olvera Street Los Angeles Day Trip

Historic Olvera Street, Downtown Los Angeles

Olvera Street is adjacent to Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.  Olvera Street is a landmark that retains its authentic charm and captures the essence of what LA used to look like years ago. This area of Los Angeles features 27 historic buildings with a traditional Mexican-style plaza, including the Avila Adobe, constructed in 1818, and the former home to Francisco Avila, one of the city’s first mayors. Olvera Street is a popular stop for many tour buses. This trip would be best taken during the week as Olvera Street can get very crowded on weekends and holidays.

Heritage Valley Day Trip

Take a Sunday Drive Heritage Valley

State Route 126 connects Santa Clarita to Ventura. The highway follows the banks of the Santa Clara River through Heritage Valley and makes a beautiful place for a Sunday Drive. Plenty of areas of interest include Bennets Honey Farm and the historic town of Santa Paula. So make sure you allow plenty of time to take them all in. Unfortunaltly, the Filmore Railway has been closed for several years and no longer offers train excursions.

Richard Nixion Library

President Richard Nixon Library

Take a tour of the original farmhouse where President Nixon was born, just a few steps away from his final resting place. Inside the Library, the main gallery is where you can explore the history and the exhibits. The library features nearly 70 significant exhibitions, including a replica of President Nixon’s Oval Office and an extensive display of Nixon’s historic trip to China. A fantastic garden with a large reflection pool at the Library is ideal for sitting, relaxing, and enjoying the view.

Graber Olive House

Step Back in Time Graber Olive House

Graber Olive House specializes in tree-ripened olives, a somewhat time-consuming process but a superb way to bring out the best in these green and black beauties. The olives come from the family ranch located in the San Joaquin Valley. Several hundred tons of olives are trucked to the historic Ontario Olive House each year to be canned or processed into olive oil at gift shops and tours. Hours are limited, so check with their website before you go. Also in the area is Logan’s Candy Shop , which has been hand-making candy since 1933 and is well worth a look.

Los Angeles Farmers Market Day Trip

Lunch at Original Farmers Market

Since 1934, a historic landmark has been on the corner of Third and Fairfax. It’s called the Farmers’ Market, and it’s a fascinating place to spend the day. The market stores offer a remarkable selection of fresh fruits, candy, baked goods, homemade ice cream, wines, meats, and poultry. Parking is scarce here, so arriving early and planning a weekday visit is best. Take advantage of your retirement and visit during the week while most people work.

Automobile Driving Museum Vintage Car Rides

Take a Ride Auto Driving Museum

The Automobile Driving Museum has a remarkable, rotating collection of nearly 150 classic, antique, and historic cars, all with retro color schemes, snazzy hood ornaments, and unique taillights. Still, perhaps its claim to fame is that on Sundays, guests are given a rare opportunity to drive in a piece of history as they are whisked around in one of several pristine classic vintage cars from the museum’s collection. Even if you do not visit on a car ride day, this fun museum is an excellent place to see and learn about vintage vehicles.

Birch Aquarium

Discover Sea Life Birch Aquarium

The Birch Aquarium is located on a hilltop site that provides a panoramic view of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus just off the Pacific Ocean. Birch Aquarium is a mid-size facility with most of the displays indoors. One of the highlights of a trip to the aquarium is a 70,000-gallon kelp tank forest. If children are along on this trip, there is a very popular Tide Pool Plaza where they can touch and learn about the tide-pool animals. There is a bit of a walk from the parking lot to the Aquarium entrance, but once you get there, all the exhibits are on one level.

Casa Romantica San Clemente California

Casa Romantic San Clemente California

Casa Romantica is perched on a cliff overlooking the San Clemente Pier in South Orange County. This historic home was built in 1927 by the City of San Clemente, Ole Hanson. The 5-acre Casa Romantica estate was one of the first buildings in the new Spanish Village By The Sea. Due to a landslide, most of the garden area is closed, but visitors can still explore the interior rooms of the mansion. There is also a revolving art show and, on select weekends, various events.

Seal Beach

Enjoy the Seaside at Seal Beach

Home to the second-longest wooden pier in the United States, Seal Beach blends a rustic old surf town and a modern upscale cultural community. Of course, the main attraction that lures visitors to this quaint seaside town is the beach with its soft sand and sunshine. A trip to Seal Beach would not be complete without a visit to the Red Car Museum aboard Car No. 1734, a restored Pacific Electric Railway car on the corner of Main and Electric downtown.

Houston students travel to Dallas area to view total eclipse for senior trip

Brandon Hamilton Image

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Total solar eclipse day is here!

There are 31 million people in the path of totality across the United States, which is more than 2,000 miles long. The path stretches across 15 states -- from Texas all the way to Maine.

Small towns across the country are bracing for an influx of visitors. Waxahache, which is just south of Dallas, is expecting more than a hundred thousand skywatchers!

"They even told us to maybe be prepared to sleep in our store if we needed to," small business owner Kaylee Hume said.

Hundreds of school districts nationwide are closing for the day or dismissing early.

In the Houston area, which is not in the path of totality, Houston ISD and Fort Bend ISD will hold class as normal. Fort Bend ISD said recess and P.E. will be held indoors to protect students' eyes.

Meanwhile, Cleveland ISD and Clear Creek ISD canceled classes on Monday.

On Houston's northside, two charter busses left early Monday morning, headed to the Dallas area.

In total, 102 students and eight staff members from YES Prep Northline Secondary are making the trip to watch the solar eclipse in the path of totality at Blue Bonnet Park in Ennis, Texas.

Principal Brittany McGruder said the trip full circle for this particular group of students. The seniors were in 6th grade back in 2017 for the last solar eclipse, so this year, they wanted to make it special.

"It's going to be a memorable moment because we did this in the 6th grade. It's been a long time. We're now in 12th grade," student Joscarr Iaga said. "It's crazy because now we're going to experience it, not just learn about it. We're actually going to experience it and actually see what's going to happen. That's actually something nice to see. And then we're actually going to go somewhere else, not just Houston. We're going to go somewhere else and experience it right in front of us."

Watching the eclipse is part of their senior class trip. They also heading to the Astros and Rangers game on Monday night, then coming back to Houston on Tuesday.
