The legend of Tungnath

What is so special about Tunganath? The fact, that it has the highest temple of Lord Shiva at a height of 3680m. Or the fact that it offers a completely stunning, mesmerizing panoramic view of the Himalayan ranges. It might also be the fascinating legend behind the Tungnath shrine. Whatever be it, we urge you to read about the story behind Tungnath. It will help you to understand and appreciate the place and the people who you might see on the way to Tungnath trek a tad bit better.

Tungnath Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek

The legend of Tunganath is very intimately related to the Hindu epic Mahabharata. Mahabharata tells the greatest political saga of all times where two families Pandavas and Kauravas fight against each other for the kingdom. After the 18 days war at Kurukshetra, the Pandavas won the battle after killing all their 100 Kaurava brothers and their relatives.

After winning the war, the Pandavas were grieved at this mass killing and were repentant of their action. After all, they were their brothers and relatives that they had killed in the war! So they went for Narada’s advice who asked them to ask for forgiveness from Lord Shiva. Only the master of the universe will be able to absolve them of their sins. On the other hand, Narada went and informed Lord Shiva that the Pandavas were seeking him for forgiveness.

Lord Shiva was convinced of the sins of the Pandavas and did not think appropriate to exonerate the Pandavas of their sins. Neither did he want to face the Pandavas. So he took the form of a bull and hid at Guptakashi, the underground heaven. Narada, in the meanwhile, informed the Pandavas of the whereabouts of Lord Shiva. The Pandavas went in search of the Lord. After a long search, the Pandavas met a Bull on their way. The Bull was disguised Lord Shiva and he tried to hide from them. Bhima, the strongest of the Pandava brothers chased the bull.

The bull later rematerialized at five different parts and these places later came to be known as Panch Kedars . Different parts of the bull rose at different locations – the hump at Kedarnath, the limbs at Tunganath, the navel and stomach surfaced at Madamaheshwar, the face at Rudranath and the hairs at Kalpeshwar. It is believed that the Pandavas had built temples at all the five locations and were finally freed of their sins. It is also believed that the front portion of the bull fell at Pashupatinath in Nepal.

Tungnath Temple

The Tungnath Temple is a small temple built on the Chandranath Parbat in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. Located just below the Chandrashila peak, it is said to be one of the highest temples of Lord Shiva at an altitude of 12073 feet or 3680m. The temple is built in the traditional north India architecture style. There are a number of shrines surrounding the temple and at the entrance, you will find an idol of Lord Ganesh.

Ganesh idol at Tungnath Temple

In the main sanctum, ashtadhatu (made of eight metals) idols of sage Vyas and Kaal Bhairav (demi-god) are placed. The temple also houses the images of the Pandavas and silver plaques of other four Kedar shrines. An idol of Adi Guru Shankaracharya is placed near the idol of Shiva. The temple remains closed during the winters and during that time the deity along with the temple priests are moved to Mukumath, 19 km from Tunganath. The journey dates of the deity from Mukumath to the temple and back is decided by the priests and is done with much reverence by the locals.

Stories and legend about Chandrashila or moon rock

Sunrise at Chandrashila

Chandrashilais the summit of the Chandranath Parbat on which the Tunganath Temple is situated. As we said earlier there is no dearth of stories in the Himalayan region. Legend has it that the Moon God Chandra spent time here in penance.

Did you know that Chandrashila literally means the moon rock?

Another legend says that Lord Rama meditated here at the Chandrashila summit after defeating the demon king Ravana. Whatever be the legend behind the place, Chandrashila peak offers stunning panoramic views of the Himalayan ranges of Chaukhamba, Trishul, Nanda Devi peaks, Kedarnath, Kedar Dome, Gangotri and Yamunotri peaks. The peak is at a height of about 12083 feet or 3683m. There is a temple dedicated to River Ganga at the summit.

Legend behind Deoriatal

Deoriatal Lake at evening

It seems that the Pandava brothers of Mahabharata not only fought to win at the battlefields, but they were also wanderers and trekkers. Deoriatal is also related to a mythological tale about the Pandavas. It is said that Yaksha (a demi-god) asked questions to the Pandavas before allowing them to drink water from the lake.

Also known as Devariya Tal , it is believed that this was the “ Indra Sarovar ” mentioned in the Puranas and the gods used to come here for taking a bath! Well, with the view of all the majestic peaks at the background, the place was surely meant to be for the gods!

The most common itinerary for Tungnath Deoriatal Chandrasila Trek

We mostly get questions about the itinerary to take for TungnathDeoriatalChandrasila Trek. So we decided to share the most common itinerary for the Deoriatal, Tungnath and Chandrashila trek. This was also the route we took for the trek. For the TungnathDeoriatalChandrasilatrek, you have to reach Haridwar or Rishikesh first. So we will start the itinerary from there.

Day 1 | Haridwar/ Rishikesh – Ukhimath – Sari – Deoriatal

We started early from Rishikesh and took a bus from towards Ukhimath. It is about 7-8 hours from Rishikesh through the beautiful Devprayag and Rudraprayag. Sari is about 12km from Ukhimath. We did not get any shared vehicle from Ukhimath towards Sari and so hired a cab to the village.

We usually do not book our accommodations while travelling. We believe that that in India there is always a room available. After arriving at Sari, we looked around asking people for places to stay at Sari. We were shown the house of Mr Negi. We reached there and were welcomed by Mr and MrsNegi. Knowing that we did not have our lunch, Mrs Negi quickly went on to prepare something for us. While we waited for food, we talked with Negiji, a gentle person and a trekker himself. He suggested us to trek to Deoriatal that day itself and stay at the tent there. It was a great proposal and we happily agreed.

Entrance of Deoriatal trek

After having our lunch, we started our trek towards Deoriatal. Sari to Deoriatal is about 2.5-3km and it took us around 2 hours to reach Deoriatal. The trail is well marked and you do not need a guide for it. There were a number of tents and we were the only one there that day. We chose one and stayed there for the night.

Deoriatal is located at an altitude of 2438m surrounded by dense forests and having the snowcapped ranges at the backdrop. The reflection of the Chaukhamba range on the clear waters of the lake is simply a delight to see. I was so excited that I would see something like it after Tonglu in Sandakphu and Phalut trek .

Day 2 | Deoriatal – Chopta – Tungnath

Reflection of Chaukhamba on Deoriatal Lake

The next morning, we woke up in order to see the mesmerising view of the ranges on the waters of the Deoriatal Lake. It was a surreal feeling to see the view. Having seen the photographs before, we knew what it looked like. But watching it with our own eyes is a different experience altogether.

After having our breakfast, we trekked down to Sari village. There Negiji had arranged a car for us that would take us to Chopta. We reached Choptaby noon and had our lunch there. Chopta by itself is a very scenic place surrounded by forests of pine, deodar and rhododendrons, meadows and flattering vistas. Chopta is often known as the ‘ Switzerland of India ’, but I don’t think that a place should be named as such. I am sure Switzerland is beautiful, but Chopta is also amazing in its own right.

Tungnath Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek

The initial plan was to stay at Chopta for the night and trek to Tungnath and Chandrashila the next day. But we decided to do the Tungnath trek that day itself. After lunch, we started our trek towards Tungnath.

Tungnath is about 4km from Chopta. The trail is properly paved till Tungnath and there is no need to take any guide. The weather was a bit gloomy. Clouds hang low while we were on our way to Tungnath. We saw many people of different ages on their way to Tungnath or returning from there. Tungnath is one of the holy shrines of Lord Shiva and is visited by a lot of pilgrims. Though our reasons to trek to Tungnath was not religious, we enjoyed hiking through the beautiful trail.

It took us 2 hours to reach Tungnath . There are a number of shops with accommodation facilities below the temple premises. The facilities are very basic with dormitory beds and common toilets, but the people are very warm and welcoming. We decided to stop for the night at one such place. You can also stay at the temple guest room. But remember that the temple remains open for only a fixed time of the year, usually between May to October. Come November, there is a lot of snowfall at Tungnath and reaching Chandrashila becomes difficult.

Day 3 | Tungnath – Chandrashila – Tungnath – Chopta

view from Chandrashila peak, Uttrakhand

We started early in the morning at 4 AM. It was biting cold during that time. We had not anticipated such cold and had not brought jackets with us. I was literally trembling. Seeing me thus, the shop owner gave both of us two jackets. They were old and worn out but was enough to keep us warm. At first, we thought, he was renting us the jacket. When we offered him money for the jackets, but he flatly refused!

Chandrashila is 1.5 km trek from Tungnath, but this stretch is a tough one. The inclination is almost about 75 degrees and in the biting cold, it became very difficult for us to trek to the summit. Thank god that we had Baba Narayangiri with us! He is sadhu we met at Tungnath. While we were shivering in cold even after wearing the sweater and jackets, he coolly walked with only a shawl. He guided us through the tricky areas and soon we were on the Chandrashila peak.

Sunrise at Chandrashila

It was not yet the time for sunrise and we waited with teeth clattering against each other for the sun to rise. As the sun rose and the first rays fell on the Chaukhamba peak, we simply stood looking at the beauty. For a moment we forgot everything about our camera and that we have to take pictures. We simply stood in awe at the magic of nature.  From Chandrashila, you can see Nanda Devi , the highest mountain located entirely in India. You can also get the majestic views of Chaukhamba, Trishul, Mt Nanda Ghunti, Mt Kamet, Mt Dunagiri, Kedar Dome, Kedarnath, Thalaysagar and the Gangotri ranges .

Sunrise over Chaukhamna range at Chandrashila trek

After the sunrise, we spent some moment at Chandrashila peak while Baba Narayangiri told us about his stories and his visits at the Kumbh Mela. Then we hiked down to Tungnath. We collected our luggage from there and further hiked down to Chopta. We stopped at Chopta for the night.

Day 4 | Chopta – Ukhimath – Haridwar

We started early from Chopta. We shared a car with a few other trekkers we met on the trek and came back to Haridwar .

trekking to Tungnath

This was our Deoriatal Tungnath Chandrashila trek itinerary . You can also do only Tungnath-Chandrashila trek or Deoriatal trek if you do not have enough time.

There is a route from Deoriatal to Tungnath via Rohini Bugyal. We had not taken that route. You can take it, but you would need a guide for it. Most of the commercial trekking companies also take that route. But also keep in mind that camping at RohiniBugyal is not allowed anymore.

Best time for Deoriatal Trek & Tungnath Chandrashila Trek

Spring (march – april).

Like we always say, the best time to visit a place depends on what you like and want. The spring (March and April) is a great time to visit if you want to see the rhododendrons in bloom. Weather will also be pleasant with warm days and cold nights.

Summer (May – June)

May to June beginning is also a good time to visit. The snow melts and the weather remains pleasant. This is also the best time to do Tungnath and Chandrashila trek. It is only after March that the snow at Chandrashila starts melting and the trail becomes accessible. However, carry woollen clothes, as the nights can be quite cold.

Monsoon (Late June – August)

June to August is monsoon and should best be avoided as the area is prone to landslides.

meadows at Tungnath Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek

Autumn (September – October)

September is a great time to do the trek. Post monsoon, everything will be green, beautiful and fresh. The entire place looks great. The days will be pleasant while the night temperature can drop to 5 degrees.

Autumn arrives in October and brings with it clearer sky and better weather. This is also a good time for the TungnathChandrashila trek. Also, the Tungnath temple remains open till October. While the morning can be pleasant, but nights can be quite chilly. We had visited in October and the night time and early morning were quite chilly.

Tungnath Temple, Chopta

Winter (November – February)

During the winter months, the landscape becomes dull, November being the least favourable month. By December, winter sets in and you will see a blanket of white snow everywhere. The Deoriatal Lake will be half-frozen with snow all around. The temperature will be really low during this time. Also, you have to trek through the snow during this time.

Tungnath Temple will be closed and it is difficult to get accommodation there. You might have to return back to Ukhimath or Duggalbitta for night stay. The roads from Duggalbitta might be closed due to snow during this time. So be prepared to trek to Chopta from Duggalbitta or BaniyaKund. The snow trek to Tungnath is quite an adventure, but you should be careful about the weather and other conditions. Also, it is highly recommended to take a guide with you during the winter.

You might not be able to get to Chandrashila peak in the months of December to March.

A warm and delicious lunch will be served when we shall reach the Deoriatal campsite by the lake.

Day 3 : Trek from Deoriatal to Syalmi via Rohini Bugyal

Day 4 : trek from syalmi to baniya kund, day 5 : trek from baniya kund to chandrashila via tungnath and back to sari.

We will trek from Baniya Kund to Tungnath and Chandrashilla peak on this day. This trek will be13 Kms and usually takes 7-8 hours. Enjoy the mountain vegetation and trees en route. Overnight stay will be at Chopta.

We shall start our day as early as possible. After a delicious breakfast, we will set out on the journey to Chandrashila top from Baniya Kund. We can witness the beautiful sunrise from the Tungnath top. The trail from Chopta to the Tungnath Temple runs on a well-defined concrete bounded path. The trail will be a little tougher today with challenging steep climbs. During winter, you will find a thick layer of snow covering the whole trail. There are no water points throughout the trail. So, make sure you carry a sufficient amount of water with yourself. After crossing the steep slope, you will reach the summit of the Chandrashila peak. Here, you can get a 360-degree view of the Kumaon and Garhwal mountain ranges with snow-clad mountains in the entire vicinity. The renowned peaks consist of – Nanda Devi, Kedar Dome, Trishul, Dronagiri and Nanda Ghunti. You can also witness the glimpses of Gangotri and Thalay Sagar right at the edge

You will feel like you are in heaven being surrounded by these many mountain peaks in the vicinity. We will spend some time embracing the beauty of the setting and glorifying the magnificence of nature. After this, we will make our way back to the Sari base camp and this will mark the end of the longest and the most hectic day of our trek. So, we will have dinner at the campsite and proceed to sleep as soon as possible without incorporating any further delay.

I was bored with my regular 9 to 5 schedule and then I decided to seclude myself from the chaotic city life. So, I went to Brahmatal trek last month along with a couple of my friends. We went with Trekmunk and it was a lovely experience. The trek guide, Ramesh was very polite and helpful. The food and snacks were amazing. The activities in the campsite during our overnight stay is something that I am gonna cherish my entire life. I am waiting for my next trek with Trekmunk.

No words for the bike trip from Srinagar to Leh. One should experience it to feel it and all this because of the management of Trekmunk especially Mohit and Harshit whose efforts even made the hardest of the ride exciting adventurous and above all safe. Although some hindrances which are quite common like bike issues and medical problems arose with our co-riders, I liked the way these two guys handled it dexterously. I went with one of my best friends and came with a lot more and the trip turned out to be memories that can be cherished for a lifetime. Thanks, Team Trekmunk for giving me a wonderful experience. I can't wait to go on my next adventure with them.

Our 7 days trip to Meghalaya was a truly memorable experience. Thank you Trekmunk for arranging such an adventurous backpacking trip and a special thanks to Mohit Goswami our trip leader for giving us an experience of what true travelling is. From hitchhiking to traversing the unknown places to eating delicious Momo's to climbing 3000 steps, we did it all in those 7 days which came to end so quickly and none of us wanted to go back home. Such an experience where you just pick up your rucksacks and walk down the roads of a traveller could have been only possible because of Trekmunk!

We were a group of 12 friends and booked a trek to Kedartal with Trekmunk, it was an amazing experience..even though it was our first trek to the Himalayas and Kedartal being a difficult terrain trek we were guided excellently by the Trekmunk team. They served us nutritious food, took complete care of our safety and health and gave us the right advice to overcome AMS. Eagerly awaiting our next trek with them.

I had the best time of my life at Sandakhphu Phalut trek arranged by Trekmunk. Literally I felt like I was in heaven and I was soo very happy. I will recommend everyone to opt for Trekmunk. I was a solo woman traveler and was a bit worried, but things went very smoothly and I enjoyed it a lot. I miss my fellow trekkers too. I am very satisfied with their arrangements.

Comprehensive Guide To Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek

Neeti singhal.

The Deoriatal-Chandrashila trail is located in Rudraprayag district in Uttarakhand, going up to an altitude of 3,700M. It takes you through the gorgeous forest trails of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. As if the location and the landscapes were not enough, the trek also introduces you to the unique biodiversity of the area. As a beginner-friendly trek, newbies and experts alike can find themselves charmed by the pure magic of the trail.

Here we are answering some frequently asked questions about this trek soaked in historical tales .

1. Where is Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek?

Deoriatal Chandrashila is located in Uttarakhand in the Garhwal region of Himalayas. The village of Sari, which is the starting point for the trek, is a small hamlet located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand.

2. Why should I do this trek?

Deoriatal Chandrashila is one trek which gives so much in exchange for so little. This easy, year-long trek treats you to a mythological story about the journey of the Pandavas (of the Mahabharat fame!) at every corner and rewards you with the best views of the giants in the Garhwal range of Himalayas. The climax of this trek is made of clear and unobstructed views of giants such as the Gangotri range of mountains, Thalaysagar, Nanda Devi, Bandarpoonch, Chaukhamba, Kedar Dome, Kedarnath, Trishul to name a few. If you are new to trekking, this trek will introduce you to all the splendor of the mighty Himalayas as it generously reveals all the natural beauty and mythological secrets for you to witness.

For more details on the highlights of this trek, read Highlights of Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek .

3. How difficult is Dayara Bugyal Trek?

The trek takes you to an altitude of 3,700M and is a beginner-friendly trek which means that it is a safe bet if you are just about starting out your journey of Himalayan trekking. Having said that, the only thing to be cautious of are the challenges that come with high-altitude. This is a fun process of discovering how your body reacts to different heights.

Another major challenge of this trek is the long distances one has to cover each day of the trek - the distances go up to 18 kms in a single day. For specific details on the challenges of this climb, read  Who is this trek meant for?

4. What is the best season to do this trek?

The Deoriatal Chandrashila trek is a year-long trek which means that it is an excellent choice for any time of the year. It treats you to different colours in each season. Our personal favourite is witnessing the crossover of seasons on the trail during March and April when the winters are just about retreating and the summer colours are settling in on the trail’s landscape. During these months, you witness a snow-covered trail and also a magnificent bloom of the Himalayan rhododendrons.

5. What is the temperature like on this trek?

The temperature on the Deorital Chandrashila trek can vary depending on the time of year you visit. Here is a general idea of what temperatures you can expect:

Summer months (April to June): During these months, the daytime temperatures range from 10°C to 20°C, while the night temperatures can drop to around 5°C to 10°C.

Winter months (October to March): During these months, the temperature during the daytime ranges from 8°C to 15°C, and the night temperature can drop to -5°C to 5°C. You may also encounter snowfall during winter months, which makes the trek more challenging.

6. What do I need to bring for this trek?

You will need all your general belongings that you would carry to any Himalayan trek. Be especially sure to carry your rainwear and your warmest clothes because the winds at this altitude make even the summer afternoons feel cold.

7. How does Deoriatal Chandrashila fair against other beginner level treks in the region?

Deoriatal Chandrashila is a beginner-friendly trek and hence is a great introduction to the Himalayas. The altitude and the terrain are fairly manageable. However, the one thing that sets it apart from other beginner treks is the long distances to be covered each day which make this trek a little more challenging that its counterparts.

There are also other  beginner treks like Nag Tibba, Bead Kund, Brigu Lake, Ali Bedni Bugyal and many more which are a good place to start. You can choose between the treks based on what you are looking for from your experience in terms of the region you want to explore, the kind of terrain you are looking for and the number of days you have to spare.

Read, Dayara Bugyal vs Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek: Which is a better beginner’s trek?

8. Is it a good family adventure?

Even though it is a beginner-friendly trek, the long distances to be covered each day might make it a fair bit challenging for a group of mixed age groups.

9. Do I necessarily need a guide for this?

Since Deoriatal Chandrashila, unlike treks like Sandakphu where there are tea houses for accommodation, needs camping and a fair bit of navigation to understand the trail, it is better to go with a guide if you are a beginner.

10. Is Deoriatal Chandrashila worth doing?

The answer to this will depend on your level of experience in the outdoors, what you are looking for from a trek and how many days you have to spare. However, in terms of the beauty of the landscape and the views the trek offers, you will definitely not be disappointed. The trek boasts of some very distinct high points like Deoriatal, Tunganath and Chandrashila.

11. How long does it take to complete?

From Dehradun to Dehradun, Deoriatal Chandrashila is a five day trek.

12. How do I reach the base village of the trek?

The starting point of this trek, Sari is well connected by road from Dehradun/Haridwar & Rishikesh. It may be a bit difficult to find public transport at all times. A private vehicle to get to this small village is the most feasible mode of transport. You can even ask for transport services from your trek operator for an additional cost.

13. What are the nearby attractions that I can explore?

In case you choose to spend some time in Dehradun or Mussoorie before or after the trek, here are some places you can check out:

-  Robber’s Cave or Guchhi Pani is a famous picnic spot for fun-loving enthusiasts.

-  Sahastradhara , a ‘thousand fold water spring’ is a famous tourist spot in Dehradun. The waters of the spring are believed to have medicinal properties.

-   Visit the holy Tapkeshwar temple on the bank of Asan River which is believed to have one of the oldest Shivlings.

-  Enjoy a splash at the much-touted Kempty Falls in Mussoorie

-   The highest place in Mussoorie, Lal Tibba is where you can enjoy the panoramic views of the snow-capped mountains.

-   Admire the Kumaon and Garhwal Art & Culture at SOHAM Heritage and Art Centre .

This was it from our end. We hope this was helpful and we hope to see you on the trails of this trek soon! If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out to our team and we promise to provide assistance in any way that we can.

Trekkaro team will specifically ensure your safety with...

1.  Daily oxygen saturation & pulse reading (if required in trek)  We do treks which have a different environment than our daily life. We live in an environment where we less care about a healthy lifestyle. When it’s come to doing treks or surviving in a not-so-pure environment for more than a day our body should accept the changes. Oxygen saturation is the fraction of [oxygen]-saturated hemoglobin relative to total hemoglobin in the blood. So we ensure the specific balance of oxygen in your blood. Our team ensures the health condition by oxygen saturation and pulse reading before trekking so everyone should aware of their health.

2.  Oxygen cylinders and medical kit  When it comes to high-altitude trek the body doesn't get enough oxygen. It’s not always that you cannot survive in high-altitude treks but for a safer side if your body is not adjusted to the environment we are always ready with the oxygen cylinders. Our team member carries the portable oxygen cylinder and all the basic medicines on the trek. To prevent high altitude conditions - do more exercise, cycle, and swim. The more you practice it’ll easier for you.

3.  Stretchers on every campsite  Although we are physically and mentally ready for the environment there are chances of accidents or uncertain things. In those situations, we have stretchers at every campsite so, in an emergency, the porter will safely drop you at base camp where we can do further treatment.

4.  High-Quality Trek Gear and Equipment  Trekkaro is the only trekking company in the world which is providing Free Trekking Gear (FTG) at no charge/rent only for use during the treks. Expensive FTG includes Decathlon Quechua Trek 100 Shoes, Quechua SH 100/300 Jackets, Hiking Pole/Stick, Gaiters, and Crampons. Now, before registering for the trek, there is no need to think about the expensive trekking gear, and also, do not need to buy or rent expensive trekking gear to go on a trek.

Trekkaro team will ensure you with quality tents and sleeping bags where you can survive in extreme cold. We provide sleeping bags that can hold cold up to -5 to -20 degrees Celsius. It’s always warmer in tents so we ensure you with quality shelter. So even though we are ready for the storm you should tell us if anything bothers you regarding safety.

5.  Radio (for communication between camps and guides)  Our camps are a bit far from each other. But they connect through radio though the network is the issue in hills. Although you miss anything or the weather is not good or we need medical help from the base we can communicate through radios.

6.  Technical team on all snowy slopes All the treks come up with an adventure. But safety is important in all trails and treks. Wherever we find risky slopes or areas we ensure the turn with the technical team. As we already mentioned earlier we have a well-trained team having knowledge of handling hustles in emergencies and even know how to take care of the trekkers.

Expectations

When you take an adventurous trek with us, then be assured that whatever we do is more than your expectations. In fact, our wish to excel goes beyond the point where your boots hit the trail – it begins the moment that you get in contact with us, and it never ends. •  The Best Guides  If you are already trekking with us, then you’d be forgiven for thinking our guides are superhuman. It doesn’t mean a feat to entertain, cook, guide, and facilitate, but our guides, handle it with grace, and all the while the attention is on you.

•  The Best Itineraries  It takes a lot of refinement to make a perfect trek, from dawn to dusk there are a lot of moving parts and the potential for things to go awry. For the last year, we’ve balanced on the tightrope of offering the right amount of activity, flexibility, and trek time. Whilst utilizing the best lodgings in the most unique places.

•  Value  We’re not in the business of making money and providing you with nothing. Our treks aren’t expensive, they represent excellent value for money, and for those seeking to maximize their time, there is no better way.

Our Expectations

It may come as a surprise, but the reality is that it is a two-way street (or trail), and you are ultimately responsible for the nature of the experience that you have with us. And not only that, but you also have an influence on the experience of others in your small group.

•  Attitude  This is your vacation, and the attitude that you bring will set the tone for your experience. We get that at times it’s difficult (we plan to challenge you) and we get that at times it’s a bit uncomfortable (this is not a cruise trip). All we ask you to keep an open mind, a big smile on your face, and readiness for the unexpected.

•  Physical preparedness  Our treks are designed for everyday people. You definitely don’t have to be an athlete, but to be fair to yourself and your group members, you do need to be ready. Worried about it? Do not stress it, our team is 100% dedicated to helping you pick the right trek, bring the right gear, and be physically and mentally prepared.

•  Know who’s in charge  As we’ve mentioned, you rightly expect when you join our trek to be in good, safe hands. For us to ensure the entire group’s safety, we suppose you, as our guest, to listen to your lead guide. They are the expert when it comes to decisions made on the trek.

How-Chopta-Chandrashila-Looks-On-Day-2

From Sari follow the well-defined rocky trail that gradually climbs up the mountains. Keep walking on the trail and after 30 minutes, you will come across your first major viewpoint. Stop for a while and treat your eyes to alluring views of mountains and valleys. Treading further along the trail, you will come across a forest of maple and Rhododendron. If you visit during the spring, the Rhododendrons will be red and blooming, a beautiful visual treat. Another hour or so and you arrive at Deoriatal.

Deoriatal provides the perfect dreamy setting for camping. The lovely alpine lake is nestled beautifully in a mountain clearing and is surrounded on all sides by the majestic Garhwal Himalayas. Mt. Chaukhamba is the most prominent here and it casts its reflection on the lake waters, a surreal sight to behold.  Wait until morning when the mist lifts and the sun rays warm up the peaks in a golden glow. The snow-clad mountains in the backdrop with the lake taking center-stage, it is the perfect place to capture some Instagram-worthy shots.

From the trail, you can spot the Chandrashila summit and below it, the Tungnath temple, which is just a speck in the mountains and you may need binoculars to spot the temple. Deoriatal is also a Green-Trail hotspot and you are going to find a lot of litter around the campsites, keep your eco bags ready to collect the garbage.

Reaching Deoriatal, we will set out tents for the night and a hot lunch and dinner will be provided at the campsite. You will have almost an entire day in your hand that you can use to explore the area and acclimatize as well. This is also a popular site for birdwatching and you may even spot some rare Himalayan birds. Explore the trails around the campsite and let the tranquillity of the mountains slowly engulf you.

Today is the most scenic day of your trek and a treat for all nature lovers. Today’s trail is made spectacular with the Rhododendron covers that become denser and denser as you trek uphill. The Kedar dome and the Chaukhamba peaks also peek through the tree covers. You will spot two varieties of Rhododendrons here, red and pink and during the months of March and April, the trail is set ablaze in hues of crimson. The forest cover soon opens into a beautiful clearing, the Rohini Bugyal meadow which is lined with Rhododendrons on all sides.

How-Chopta-Chandrashila-Trek-Looks-On-Day-3

The trek today is moderate starting with a gradual ascent followed by a slight descent, which eases to a gradual ascent until Rohini Bugyal. From Rohini Bugyal there’s a steep descent followed by a mix of ascents and descents to Baniyakund. As the Rhododendron cover clears up, you will get clear views of Chandrashila peak in the distance, and on your right below, you can see the Sari village once again.

The trail passes through Kedarnath Sanctuary, so you may be able to spot some Himalayan Wildlife like red foxes and other small animal species and birds like Griffon Vultures, which are huge birds of prey as well as Verditer Flycatcher and Himalayan Woodpecker. Every now and then, you may also come across small shrines with prayer flags tied to them. These temples are built by the locals. Walk for 20 more minutes and you will reach a landmark temple, the Bagdwal temple and you will spot three paths branching out.

One route connects back to Sari village, another connects to Ukhimath and there’s a third descending path, which leads us to Rohini Bugyal. The Chandrashila and Kala Parvat become quite prominent from here. Walk for about 30 minutes and you will pass a small rivulet. This is your water source and you can fill your bottles here. Tread across a wooden bridge to cross the river and a small uphill climb will lead you to Rohini Bugyal.

As you climb uphill from Rohini Bugyal, the views get better and better and you will observe a series of shepherd huts lining the hills. During the summer months, the locals occupy these huts along with their livestock. The Rohini Bugyal meadows provide the perfect spot for cattle grazing. From here, crossing a few gradual ascents, you will reach Baniyakund. Further ahead, there is a motorable road that leads to Chopta, and from here take the trail on the right to reach the Baniyakund campsite, a clearing between the forests. You will stay overnight in Cottages/ Camp.

Today is the summit day and we will have an early start in the wee hours before sunrise so that we can catch the sunrise from Tungnath. The path from Chopta to Tungnath wades along a well-defined, concrete trail. The trek from Chopta to Tungnath is about 3 km and the trail entwines along meadows and forests before making way to the Tungnath temple and 1.5 km from Tungnath lies Chandrashila summit. The trail remains buried deep in snow during the winters adding to the challenge of the climb to Chandrashila from Tungnath, which is already quite steep.

The trail from Chopta to Tungnath is well-defined which makes it quite accessible but at the same time, it is a little steep with numerous scissor bends. As you make your way to the second last scissor bend, you can see the Tungnath temple on the right and the Chandrashila summit. The views start getting increasingly better from here and Tungnath Temple is just half a kilometer away. On the left is a view overlooking a valley of Birch trees, which is again a prime spot to sight bird species like Monal and Griffon Vultures.

Soon you will reach the Tungnath temple, which remains closed in winter and you will find snow until April here. The Tungnath Temple is one of the Panch Kedars and is steeped in mythology and folklore. The legend according to Mahabharata goes that the Panch Kedars was built by the Pandavas, asking for Lord Shiva’s forgiveness and atonement of their sins incurred by killing their kins in the battle of Kurukshetra. Lord Shiva appeared in a bull form and parts of the bull appeared in these five locations, where the shrines were built. Tungnath is where the limbs and chest of the bull appeared.

From Tungnath temple, the trek to the Chandrashila summit is a short but challenging one as it is pretty steep. Crampons and gaiters are a must if you are attempting this trek in the winter. Follow your trek leader's instructions to safely make it to the summit. The trail to Chandrashila starts just behind the temple complex. You ascend 600 ft from Tungnath conquering a very steep climb. Once you reach the Chandrashila Base, the Chandrashila peak becomes visible and another 30 to 45 minutes climb takes you to the summit, where you will get some epic mountain views including Mt. Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Nanda Devi, Thalaysagar, Gangotri Ranges, Kamet, Chaukhamba, Kedar Dome, Dunagiri, Jahanukut and more.

How-Chopta-Chandrashila-Trek-Looks-On-Day-4

The sunrise view from the Chandrashila summit is unlike any you will ever see and this is one of the best photo points in the Himalayas. At Chandrashila summit there is another temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, which is believed to have been built by Lord Rama for the atonement of the sin of killing Ravana. The trek back to Chopta follows the same path. Retrace your steps back to Chopta and from there you will drive back to the Baniyakund Cottages/ Camp.

How To Reach

It is essential for everyone to arrive at Rishikesh (06:00 am)

Trek The Himalayas Head office, Tapovan Laxmanjhula, Landmark -Nainital Bank opposite Shiv Vilas Hotel

Once you have reached Rishikesh, TTH will manage the rest of your travel arrangements, if you have opted for TTH's pick-up service, you can select this option during the booking process by adding it as an add-on.

Options to reach Rishikesh

  • Take overnight train/bus to Rishikesh.
  • Take overnight train/bus to Haridwar and drive to Rishikesh (35 min drive with normal traffic).

We always recommend going for the govt. Buses over the private ones outside the bus station as based on the experience we have found that there are very high chances of delay involved with private buses. Also, govt. Buses are always more reliable. Whichever bus you choose, just make sure to reach Rishikesh at least by 05:30 am.

Additionally, unforeseeable events such as local riots, curfews, pandemics, lockdowns, government orders, or any similar situations that compromise the safety of the trekking experience may also necessitate a cancellation.

In the event of such a cancellation, TTH will provide you with a voucher equivalent to the amount you paid for the trek. This voucher can be redeemed for any of our treks within the next year, allowing you to still enjoy an adventure with us at a later date.

The issuance of a voucher is not applicable in situations where you are required to descend from the trek for any reason. The trek leader may make the decision to send you down from the trek due to factors such as insufficient fitness level, symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), high blood pressure, exceeding the designated turn-around-time, health concerns, or if you are found smoking, drinking, or violating the rules set for the trek. In such cases, the provision of a voucher does not apply.

In the rare event that TTH shifts a trek:

We would like to emphasize that weather conditions in high-altitude areas are highly unpredictable and can undergo sudden changes at any time, irrespective of the day. Additionally, circumstances beyond our control, such as natural disasters, political unrest, pandemics, and lockdowns, may impact the feasibility of conducting a trek. In cases where we are unable to proceed with an event due to such circumstances that are beyond our direct control, we will make every effort to provide you with an alternative trek that is safer and more suitable.

In such situations, we will issue a voucher to offset the cost difference between the originally scheduled trek and the alternative trek. This voucher can be redeemed at any time within one year from the date of issue. Please note that a refund fee or reimbursement of the cost difference is not applicable in these cases.

How to choose the right trek?

Choosing the right trek for a beginner can be a bit overwhelming as there are many factors to consider such as distance, elevation gain, terrain difficulty, weather, and time of year. Here are some tips that can help you choose the right trek for a beginner:

1. Determine fitness level:  Assess the fitness level of the beginner to understand their physical capabilities. This will help you select a trek that is challenging but not too difficult.

2. Choose a well-traveled trail:  A well-traveled trail will have more amenities such as signposts, water stations, and shelter. It is also safer as there will be other hikers on the trail.

3. Consider the length of the trek:  For beginners, it is recommended to start with a shorter trek that can be completed in a day or two. This will help them get acclimatized to trekking and build their confidence.

4. Look for gradual elevation gain:  Choose a trek with a gradual elevation gain rather than steep ascents. This will make the trek easier and more enjoyable.

5. Check the weather:  Check the weather forecast before selecting a trek. Avoid treks during the monsoon season or winter when the trails can be slippery or dangerous.

6. Research the trail:  Read about the trail to get an idea of the terrain, altitude, and difficulty level. This will help you select a trek that is suitable for the beginner.

7. Consult with an expert:  If you are unsure about which trek to choose, consult our trek expert Mr. Nitin (+91 70600 59773) between 10 AM to 6 PM (Tuesday - Friday). Mr. Nitin will provide you valuable advice and guidance.

Overall, it is important to choose a trek that is enjoyable, challenging but not too difficult, and suitable for the beginner's fitness level and experience.

Can a beginner choose a tough trek?

It is not recommended for a beginner to choose a difficult Himalayan trek. If you are a beginner, it is recommended to start with an easier trek and gradually build up your skills and experience. This will help you understand the challenges of trekking in the Himalayas, and also prepare you physically and mentally for a more difficult trek in the future. It is also important to choose a trek that matches your fitness level, experience, and interest.

One can take the following route to reach Auli from Chopta. Chopta –  Gopeshawar – Chamoli –Joshimath – Auli. It takes around 4-5 hours.

Bisuri Tal- It’s a lake situated near Rohini Bugyal and offers gorgeous views of the surroundings. Trek to Bisuri Tal is almost a virgin trek and is mostly explored by locals. The trail to the lake bifurcates from the Rohini Bugyal while trekking from Deoriatal to Chopta. One has to cross the valley and climb the mountain up to Chitragufa and then to the lake.

Panch Kedar- Apart from Tungnath, there are four other temples which are known as Panch Kedar, Rudranath, Madhamaheshwar, Kedarnath, & Kalpeshawar.

How to reach Chopta:

Uttarakhand has two airports, Jolly Grant (near Dehradun) and Pantnagar. Jolly Grant Airport is the preferable one to reach Chopta. One has to take a flight to Dehradun and then take a bus or taxi to reach Chopta/Sari. Flights to Dehradun are available from all metro cities.

If you don’t get a direct flight to Dehradun then you can fly to Delhi and take a bus/train to reach Haridwar/Rishikesh. Nanda Devi express is a good train to catch. Buses are available from ISBT Kashmere Gate. For Dehradun, I would recommend you take only a government bus not a private one as they are not much reliable. You can find UTC (Uttarakhand Transport Corporation) and UPSRTC (Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation) buses from ISBT Kashmere gate. There are 3 types of buses that usually run on this route, such as Volvo (or super luxury), AC Janrath (or normal AC) and Ordinary/Roadways. The bus usually takes around 6 hours. You can take any bus departing between 10 PM to 11:30 PM.

The last railway station one can reach is Haridwar and from there one can take a bus or taxi to reach Chopta/Sari. Trains are available from all the major railway stations in India.

Bus- There is no direct bus to Chopta available, neither from Delhi nor from Haridwar/Rishikesh. From Rishikesh/Haridwar, one has to take a bus to Rudraprayag, then a shared taxi/bus to Ukhimath and another shared taxi to Chopta. Ordinary buses to Rudraprayag are also available from Delhi. Taxi- Direct taxi to Chopta/Sari can be hired from Delhi as well as Haridwar/Rishikesh. Shared taxis are available from Haridwar/Rishikesh bus stand. Own car- One can also take his own car and take the route mentioned above. If you are using Google maps then always put Tungnath as your destination. Don’t enter Chopta as it shows the wrong way.

ATMs and phone connectivity:

The last ATM one can find is at Ukhimath. All network signals along with the internet are available at Sari village and Deoriatal (sometimes dicey).

At Chopta, signals remain dicey most of the time. Sometimes Airtel and BSNL work.

If there is any information that is required and is not mentioned in the above blog then please let me know.

Happy Trails 🙂

The Deoriatal-Chandrashila Trek  is a gorgeous trek in Uttarakhand that takes you through Deoriatal Lake, Chopta, Tungnath and Chandrashila peak. You may embark upon this short trek to revitalize yourself with some of the elegant offerings of nature in the form of soothing climate, numerous species of birds, dense forests with maple, rhododendron and oak trees, and captivating views of all the major summits of Western and Eastern Uttarakhand. Standing on top of the Chandrashila summit is a blessing. This five-day plan is unmatched in nature’s beauty, exhilarating challenges, time-efficiency, and convenience.

* Best Time to Visit:  Deoriatal-Chandrashila Trek is best for all the year to visit. Best time to visit Chandrashila is in summers (April-May) and winters (October-December). Best time to trek on Snow to Chandrashila Peak is from January to March.

The Deoriatal Lake would mesmerize you with its charm and here you’d get to see animals and birds drinking slurping its shimmering water. While the trail to Chopta is all about luxuriant meadows and mountainous dwellings amid the Himalayan ranges, the further trail takes you to the Tungnath peak which sits at a height of about 12,073 feet. Tungnath also features the highest Lord Shiva shrine in the world. Deoriatal-Chandrashila trek is recommended for the post-monsoon season where the snow-clad mountains would let you admire and experience the bliss of eternity. For the level of difficulty, the trek is considered as a quite easy, although some suddenly climb and rugged terrain may test your trekking skills from time to time. The trek to the summit of Chandrashila at about 13000 ft. and marks the last leg of your uphill journey, whereupon it would be a return to Chopta, the base camp. This five-day trail would involve trekking almost 30 km and with salubrious weather in this region, one can always expect a great time here.

Reach Sari, the base camp of the Deoriatal-Chandrashila trek. Transport will be arranged at an additional cost from Dehradun Railway station at 06:30 AM. Cost of the cab – Rs. 5,500/- per vehicle. During the drive, you will be surpassing the Yoga Capital of the World and sacred town of Rishikesh and also pass Devprayag where the confluence of rivers Alaknanda and Bhagirathi to form river Ganga. The river will keep you company throughout, reaching you at Sari by 06:00 in the evening where you will have an overnight stay at a Guest House/Camp/Home Stay. Roam the village, learn some words of the local language, this is appreciated and often results in getting more out of the experience. Ask for permission before taking pictures from the respect of local people. Enjoy the areas you go to, but if possible, try and leave in a better state than you found them in.

The first day is easy and the shortest day of the trek with mixed ascends and descends which involves 3 km hike; this is about to take 2-3 hours to reach Deoriatal. Pass through the dense thickets thriving with abundant bird species and continue climbing upwards. As soon as the lake comes into your sight, you could see some beautiful reflection of the entire surroundings in the clear water of this lake. A splendid vista of Chaukhamba massifs is unveiled in the background of the lake. Deoriatal Lake is also referred to as ‘two worlds at one place’, the first one being the real world and the other one being the reflection of the beautiful surroundings on the lake. Settle down right here in the comfort of your camps and get a very good night time’s sleep.

This is the longest day of the trek has rolling terrain beginning with initial gradual ascends and then rapid descend which involves 14 km trek; it takes about 7-8 hours to reach Chopta village. Today’s trail will familiarize you more with the Mount Kedar and Chaukhamba massif Summit, rising closely as you process. It will be through dense forests of oldest oak, maple and rhododendron trees of the Kedarnath Sanctuary and trail moves to Chopta through the meadow of Rohini Bugyal may be quite an experience amid the enchanting weather. At the same time, the surrounding beautiful mountains are snow-clad that will provide a pleasing background to this captivating adventure. You may find yourself lucky enough if you manage to spot a local stunning bird named Monal. After a long day, overnight stay here that would rejuvenate you for the next days’ trek.

The final day of trekking would mark the last leg of this eventful trek. Get up early morning preferably before sunrise, so that you can treat yourself to a sunrise view from Tungnath and the Chandrashila peak. Beginning from Chopta, you would be reaching a sacred place named Tungnath which has a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the Panch Kedar. It also features the highest Lord Shiva shrine in the world. Once you reach Tungnath Temple, take some time to admire the beauty of architecture and hard work put in by those Artisans who built it a millennium ago when there had been no modern tools and facilities available in the remotest part of the world. To get the 360° view of snow-clad peaks of Chaukhamba, Bandarpoonch, and Kedar, then go ahead and climb to Chandrashilla which forms the backdrop of Tungnath Temple on the eastern side. It takes an hour to reach the peak from here and the distance is around 1 Km. The climb is not so steep however the altitude makes is little difficult to make quick advances to the summit. The entire trek is mesmerizingly beautiful and the views are simply breathtaking. This pretty easy trek would allow you to appreciate the natural beauty of the Himalayas while having a great time in the homestead of nature. This fateful day ends as you return to your base camp at Chopta for night stay.

Deoriatal Chopta Chandrashila Trek:

  • We are open for private/customised treks for your own group/family/friends without any fixed group tour dates.

About the trek:

To illustrate a classic beginners hike, you must try  Deoriatal – Chopta – Tunganath – Chandrashila trek. This trail and hiking experience will initiate the crave of exploring Himalayas in you. You will get to know Himalayas better on this easy hike than you knew being just a tourist.

It has fantastic close-in mountain views, a fairly large lake with massive peak reflections on it, dense forest trail inside Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary and alpine meadows. It does ignite your hiking proponent through a summit to Chandrashila peak. This is not all! You will visit Tunganath temple, the highest Shiva temple among Panch Kedar.

sunset-at-chopta-during-chandrashila-trek

To reach our trek base Sari village, initially we will drive following Alaknanda till Rudraprayag . You will cross Rishikesh, Devprayag and Srinagar. From Rudraprayag we will follow Mandakini river for a while to reach Ukhimath town. The winding road from Ukhimath to Sari is a fantastic drive with lovely valley and occasional mountain views.

peak-views-on-the-way-from-ukhimath-to-sari-village

The places covered in the trek promises almost everything that a high altitude Himalayan trek has in its bounty. Deoriatal at ~ 2380 m/7800 ft is a longitudinal lake hidden inside the valley. You will hike a good 2 to 2 and half hours moderate climb from the last village called Sari to reach the lake. Situated at a relatively lower altitude though the mountains and reflections on water are massive and more than impressive from Deoriatal.

deoriatal-lake-and-camp-beside

Camping has been restricted at Deoriatal and Chopta or above for a while now. We arrange Swiss tents or homestay accommodations nearby .

giant-chaukhamba-massif-from-deoriatal-chandrashila-trek

After exploring Deoriatal, next morning we will descent to Sari and take a car ride to Chopta. Pristine canopy of forest, blooming Rhododendrons in Spring, foliage in autumn, Chopta has it all. Wildlife around Chopta is well known. Likewise,  a walk inside Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary (also called Kedarnath Musk Deer Sanctuary) may highly produce a glimpse of Himalayan Thar or the Himalayan Monal, state bird of Uttarakhand. Not only the wildlife, the walk on the Chopta Gopeshwar road inside forest in itself is pretty rewarding. Sunset from Chopta will surely mesmerise your senses. In particular, fresh snow in winter and Rhododendrons in spring turn this place a special one.

peak-views-on-the-way-to-chopta

Next day you will visit Tunganath and climb Chandrashila peak above the temple. Tunganath , at an elevation of ~3600 m/11500 being the highest of Panch Kedar, the five holy shrines of Lord Shiva (remaining four are, Kedarnath, Madmaheshwar, Rudranath and Kalpeshwar). A return trip from Chopta will test your basic stamina  and endurance. Meanwhile from May to Oct, temple remains open. During this season you can stay at Tunganath. Sunset from Tunganath towards the lower valleys of Ukhimath and Guptkashi  along with Chaukhamba view is compelling to say a least.

Chandrashila, a small peak above the temple is just an hour and half’s climb. Often it is referred to as the ‘Switzerland of India”. 180 degree panoramic view from the top covers numerous peaks of Kumaon (including Nanda Devi and Trishul ) to westward peaks of the Kedarnath area. The four pillars of Chaukhamba standing above 7000 m/23000 ft are so close that you have to zoom out your camera!

To sum up, this is truly a short and easy “All In One trek” for you to begin with.

Brief Itinerary for Deoriatal Chandrashila trek:

Update 2019: camping restrictions at chopta and tunganath and inside kedarnath wildlife sanctuary.

Even before the Uttarakhand High Court’s order regarding camping on Alpine meadows/Bugyal in August 2018, this trek route got its own problems regarding the camps.

First came the notice from DFO, Kedarnath Wildlife Division in 2017. The notice revoked necessary permits to camp inside core forest area. Certainly this helped to stop the abuse of the Eco-system primarily due to setting up of large fixed camps at Rohini Bugyal, Tunganath and intermediate sites. Probably this is a blessing for wildlife habitat in this pristine forest and sanctuary.

Then the local small restaurant and Dhaba owners objected to camp at Chopta due to their livelihood concern at the end of 2017. Starting from 2018 you need to camp at least 3/4 Km off and down from Chopta,  a place called Baniyakund.

So practically you can only camp around Deoriatal and Baniyakund. You can’t camp at Chopta or Tunganath, neither inside core forest area like Rohini Bugyal.

Best way to visit Deoriatal Chopta Tungnath Chandrashila – Tea House mode over camping trek:

In vast Indian Himalayas, almost all treks are of camping style. There are only handful of treks which you can complete while staying in basic lodge/homestay/seasonal settlements. This trek is one such Tea House Himalayan trek in India. Don’t worry, you will have wide choice of camping treks in future 🙂

settlement-of-chopta

Which is the best time to choose for Deoriatal Chopta Chandrashila trek?

You can choose this trek almost throughout the year, apart from monsoon. It has to offer something unique in each season.

Autumn – Winter (Sep to Dec/Jan): After monsoon the natural haze prevailing in summer goes away. Weather becomes clear to enjoy great mountain and peak views.

Glorious Uttarakhand

Chandrashila Trek – Collect The Enthralling Moments of Your Life

Chandrashila

Chopta Valley, situated at an altitude of 2,680 meters, is surrounded by a towering forest of oak, deodar, and rhododendron, which give pleasant shade to an abundance of plants. Due to its remote location from the next major city, the valley has avoided urbanization. One of the attractions of the Chandrashila Trek is the unrestricted Himalayan views. The trek to the summit of Chandrashila is generally recognized as one of the most breathtaking in the Himalayan Garhwal area. It runs through some gorgeous fields as well as some gravel roads. From the top, you can see several Himalayan peaks, such as Nanda Devi (7,817 m), Trishul (7,120 m), Kedarnath (6,831 m), Bandarpunch (6,316 m), and Chaukhamba (7,138 m).

Traveling from Chopta to Tungnath  at an elevation of 3,680 meters, requires an early start. You can find one of the five Panch Kedars, this holy site against the Chandrashila mountain. It is thought that Tungnath is more than a thousand years old, and its mythology validates the Mahabharata’s accounts. From the Chandrashila top, which one can reach after an additional hour-long climb from the Tungnath temple, one can see the silvery sheen of the Himalayan range, which is dotted with many peaks, as well as all of the lush valleys and deep gorges.

The Perfect Time to Visit Chandrashila Trek

Chandrashila trek

Best time to visit Chandrashila Trek: April to June and December to February are the two most lovely months to visit Chopta (Oct to Dec). The best time to visit Chopta for winter walks is between the months of January and March. Despite the summers being hot and humid, Chopta has a favorable climate. At certain times of day, particularly early morning and late evening, it is possible to view the Himalayas in their entirety and feel a pleasant wind. Pack some lightweight woolens if the weather becomes chilly.

As the rainy season begins in Chopta, the scenery becomes greener. While the monsoons make walking more difficult and road closures due to landslides are possible, Chopta’s breathtaking natural splendor during the rainy season makes the additional effort worthwhile. Umbrellas and water-resistant apparel are strongly recommended. Fewer hotels are available when snow covers the countryside, and fewer people travel in the winter months. However, Chopta is at its most beautiful, and the voyage is at its most challenging during the winter. Warm, substantial woolens are essential, so pack accordingly.

The way through Chandrashila trek

chandrashila

This spectacular ascent demands some effort to complete. Along the path, which traverses woodlands and broad meadows, there are stunning views of the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas. From the summit, views of the surrounding landscape and mountains are visible, including Chaukhamba, Kedarnath, Nanda Devi, and Trishul. Chandrashila makes reference to moon rocks. On the Chopta Chandrashila trek, hikers will ascend around 1,300 meters (4,100 ft). It is possible to see the peaks of Nandadevi, Trishul, Kedar Peak, Bandarpunch, and Chaukhamba from Changrashila. The region is the subject of many legends and tales. After killing the demon King Ravana, one of them says that Lord Rama came here to reflect. According to one such legend, the moon goddess Chandra conducted penance at this location. Some of the most beautiful mountains in the world are in the Himalayas, and one of the best things about this place to go trekking is that it has a 360-degree view of the Himalayas.

Best of Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek

Diverse forests To start things off, our Deoriatal woodland walk is the longest and most comprehensive of all the forest treks we provide. If you ride the portion of the trail between Deoriatal Lake and Bhrujgali Camp, you will get a good idea of how different the forest may be. The environment along the road varies drastically, with some portions crossing through deep forest, others through moss-covered, meandering tunnels, and others passing through the more open jungle.

There are several bird species to observe and photograph. The Deoriatal must be the best birding track in the world. The general population often views bird photographers’ visits to Sikkim, and Goechala in particular, with skepticism. At Deoriatal, it is possible to see more bird species in a single day than on the Goechala Trail.

Why Deoriatal – Chandrashila Is The Best Himalayan Trek You Can Start With

Photo of Indiahikes

Deoriatal is perhaps the only trek on our list that gives maximum returns for the effort put in. There are three things that are really stunning about the Deoriatal to Chandrashila peak trek.

Photo of Deoria Tal, Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand, India by Indiahikes

Forests with plenty of variety

To begin with, Deoriatal has the best forest trek amongst all our treks. If you take the section between Deoriatal lake and Bhrujgali camp, it is sometimes stunning to imagine how much variety jungles can be in. There are sections with thick wooded trees, there are moss-covered trails through enveloping tunnels and there are trails that weave through clearings in the jungles. And we camp bang in the middle of the forest in a wide open clearing at Rohini Bugyal.

Mixed forest on the trail

Bird-watching

Secondly, birds. There are hundreds of birds to sight and photograph. If there was a birders’ trail, then it has got to be Deoriatal. It is often a wonder why people travel to Sikkim, to Goechala , to photograph birds. Deoriatal has more birds to show in one day than the entire Goechala trek.

A grand summit climb

Finally, the summit climb to Chandrashila. As you climb up, one by one, all the major summits of Western and Eastern Uttarakhand pop into view. When we say all, we mean all. And as everyone knows, the summits seen from Uttarakhand are the tallest summits of India. Nowhere on a trek that is so easily approachable do you get to see all these summits so close. Standing on top of Chandrashila summit is a blessing and not an achievement.

Whom is the trek meant for?

Everybody! This trek is primarily for first timers who want an introduction to trekking in the Himalayas. It’s also for seasoned trekkers who wish to go on a leisurely trek. Children from the age of 7 can do this trek and so can people over the age of 60 as long as they are fit. The Deoriatal Chandrashila peak trek has components of every great Himalayan trek. From mixed forests with oak and rhododendrons to meadows, a glacial lake, stunning mountain views and even a summit climb!

Rhododendrons in April PC:Sayanti

How difficult is the trek?

The Deoriatal Chandrashila summit trek is an easy trek. On the second day of your trek, you cover 8 km which requires some stamina. The climb to Tungnath and Chandrashila is steep and this portion could strain your legs if you go unprepared. Frankly, the trek has too many visual rewards for those stepping into the world of Himalayan trekking for the first time.

What are the risks involved?

The Deoriatal Chandrashila peak trek by itself does not pose any risks. In the months of May and June, there will be snow and this makes walking slightly tricky. You will be provided with micro spikes that will help you gain grip. If there is too much snow, a technical guide will carve a route for you to the summit. In case of emergencies, there are easy exit routes from Sari and Chopta which have road connectivity.

How to prepare for the trek?

To be able to effortlessly do this trek and enjoy all the views, you need to be persistent on fitness. To increase your lung capacity, begin with jogging on a daily basis. Increase the distance covered till you hit 4 km. Once you are comfortable with jogging for 4 km, increase your pace. For those of you who are unable to jog due to health reasons, brisk walking for half an hour will suffice. If you are trekking in winter, the campsite can get quite windy. Ensure that you take enough warm layers and keep your neck and ears covered.

ATM points and Mobile connectivity

You get mobile connectivity for Airtel, Vodafone and BSNL numbers at Sari. At Deoriatal you may get weak signals of BSNL and Airtel. Signal is intermittent in the mountains. Do not depend on it. Finish all your important calls at Haridwar. Please inform anxious family members about limited phone connectivity.

Places to see

After the trek you can spend time exploring tourist attractions in Haridwar. Please note that these are suggestions and Indiahikes does not make any arrangements for the same.
