PUBG Miramar Map: vehicles, strategies, and the best start locations for the desert map

All the essential info on PUBG's desert map, Miramar.

PUBG's Miramar map is the second map available, having been announced to much excitement all the way back in late 2017.

Matching the 8 by 8 kilometer setting of Battlegrounds' original map Erangel , the Miramar map is a dusty biome with a mixture of vast plains, high story settlements, expansive desert and a coast surrounded by islands.

Here on this page, we'll be explaining everything you need to know about the map itself, including any unique Miramar vehicles and items, plus our tips and advice on the best Miramar start locations and drop zones , general map info, and our own dedicated Miramar strategies for getting the most out of the desert map's unusual terrain.

This page is part of our guides to each of PUBG's maps. For more, head to our dedicated pages on Sanhok , Erangel and Miramar , Vikendi or look at all of the best PUBG loot locations in one place.

PUBG's Miramar map explained - desert map size, cover, and general info

Now that Miramar's been out in the wild for a while, we've become a much more intimate with its various quirks and and characteristics.

Here's the Miramar map itself, before we dive into specifics:

PUBG's desert map Miramar:

Layout, size, setting, and cover

As you might have guessed, the desert map Miramar is set in the desert - or at least a fictional, sandy, central American biome. There's a clear 'Western' vibe to it, with classic frontier weapons like the Winchester being introduced when it launched. We explored Miramar ourselves way back when it launched, which you can watch in the video below:

As far as its general characteristics go, the main thing to note about Miramar is that it's open, far more so than the Erangel map - although it's open in a different way to what many people seem to think.

One of the main complaints players have had about Miramar is that it feels too open because of the lack of cover. That's not necessarily true - there may be slightly less cover than Erangel, but more cover has been added in patches over time - and we think that it's more a case of Miramar feeling open because of the differences in line of sight that it has with Erangel.

The one thing that really sets the two apart is the excess of trees in Erangel. They provide pretty poor cover, but a handful of trees dotted around fairly open fields is enough to drastically alter line of sight to snipers and people scoping out the plains for crossing players.

Whilst Miramar might have plenty of cover that's actually better at protecting you than trees, such as the undulating terrain itself, it's the fact that you can see so far, and so clearly, that makes you feel so vulnerable when you're traversing it.

In terms of size, Miramar's actually the same size as Erangel, despite some believing it to be different - it's an 8x8 grid of large squares, with each large square equalling one kilometre.

PUBG update #29 is live: here's our guide to the latest PUBG patch notes for update 29 to get you up to speed. Meanwhile, we've dedicated pages on the Sanhok map , Erangel map and Miramar map and Vikendi map , too. If you're after some broader advice, our list of PUBG tips and tricks , PUBG weapon damage stats and the best weapons and best PUBG loot locations can help.

Like all maps in PUBG so far, Miramar has some unique vehicles, weapons, and features that are specific to it alone. Here's a rundown of each.

Miramar Unique vehicles:

  • Pickup (Open Top) - 4 seater replacing the open UAZ
  • Pickup (closed Top) - 4 seater replacing the closed UAZ
  • Van - 6 seater slow-moving banter bus
  • Mirado - 4 seater muscle car

Miramar Unique weapons:

  • Win94 - sniper rifle, incompatible with scopes
  • Sawed-Off - shotgun equipped in sidearm slot
  • R45 - pistol replacing the R1895

Other Miramar features:

  • Miaramar has four kinds of dynamic weather available: Day (clear), Sunrise, Rain, Fog.

As with any map in PUBG the best starting locations for a given match are always going to depend on the situation - and how you like to play.

Generally though, if you're out to win and not out to practise your combat or fool around, there are a number of things you're always going to want: loot, safety, and an easy route to the safe zone. We actually cover the best PUBG loot locations for all maps , noting loot quality, quantity, and risk-factor in a dedicated, separate guide, but here's a quick rundown of some of the best places to start.

Miramar best start locations and drop zones:

  • Hacienda - This is Miramar's version of Erangel's School; a smallish complex absolutely bursting with good loot, but also almost guaranteed to have other players there too, even if the plane's path was nowhere near it and you got there as fast as you could. Survive the shootout and you'll be one of the most well-kitted in the game.
  • Prison - Like Hacienda, this place has probably the best loot in the game. Unlike Hacienda, it's less popular because it's right in the corner of the map, meaning it's only viable on occasion. The best time to go here is when the plane's path is quite far away, but you can get close-ish on landing, and arrive within about a minute by vehicle. That way you normally get it to yourself, and have time to quickly book it to the safe zone after.
  • Casino at Pecado - The Pecado Casino is a bit like Erangel's Hospital. A single, large-ish building filled with top-grate weapons and gear. It's very central though, like Hacienda, which means it's almost always in range of a parachute drop and therefore almost always full of people, so expect a shootout if you go.
  • Ladrilleria - A lesser-known gem that I hate to tell the world about, Ladrilleria normally has enough equipment for one or two players although it varies greatly with RNG. Sometimes there'll be three M416s and level 2 armour, sometimes three Winchesters, depending on your luck. It's normally quiet if it's on the edge of parachute distance and is also close to another large town and some warehouses that you can progress to if needed.
  • Military Camp - Right in the top-right of the map this place is rarely in range of the drop, and often leads you stuck right at the far end of the map to the safe zone if you get bad luck with the RNG, but it's full of great gear. The main issue is that it's so spread out that it takes a long time to actually hoover it all up, but it's great for squad play where you can afford to spread out a little yourselves.
  • Minas Generales - A bit like Ladrilleria, this place is rarely dense with other players, partly because it's quite close to hot areas like Hacienda and Pecado which the masses tend to prefer. The various levels of the big machinery structures have lots of level 2-rated gear, and inside the multi-level buildings you'll find a good range of weapons. Another one good for squads as it's quite spread out again. Move into Graveyard, too, if you're still short of one or two key items.

desert tourist pubg

Away from specific drop zones and landing locations, the general tips for landing and surviving on Miramar are pretty similar to those for Erangel. Here's our general advice for where to land when playing on the map:

PUBG Miramar map strategies:

  • On Miramar specifically, allow some extra time for getting around the desert map. Despite patches to address the issue, vehicles are still harder to find, and off-road is much harder to navigate thanks to miles upon miles of bumpy, awkward terrain that your vehicle can get suddenly stuck on.
  • As we mentioned above, whilst there's plenty of natural cover on Miramar - those humps, bumps and hills are awful for driving but great for ducking and diving between - the sight lines are very open. Avoid crossing open areas surrounded by hills, especially on foot.
  • Remember the rough distance of 1-2 kilometres/squares as a guide of how far you can get from the flight path, depending on how high you open your parachute - and beware that parachuting has changed with the introduction of the Vikendi map on PC! You can now glide, by holding Control, which keeps you high in the air but moves you much slower, and you can descend much faster too by holding Shift, although that drastically reduces your distance.
  • Know when to jump by lining up the wing of the plane with your marker. When it's perfectly in line (i.e. when the plane is perfectly at a right angle to your location) then jump.
  • To get max distance fast, press W whilst looking straight ahead at the horizon (this has been changed from when it was better to look directly up). That means you're diving forwards, quickly, rather than down or slowly.
  • You get a speed boost to your parachuting if you're at max speed (234mph) when the parachute opens. Do so by looking directly down and holding W. Remember to then hold Shift when the parachute opens too, with the new system.
  • When your parachute opens, you can also still 'swing' to go further without using the glide and quick-drop controls. Do so by pressing W until you've swung all the way back, then releasing so your character swings forwards, then press W again when they're at max distance forwards in the swing, and repeat.
  • One tactic is to pick a map location with a high chance of spawning vehicles, that's away from any conflict. Hop in the vehicle, and then you can drive to a loot-heavy location well across the map (away from any enemies) and give yourself a good 5-7 minutes to loot it, considering it takes 5 minutes for the first blue ring to spawn, and then a couple more for it to actually reach the white-ringed safe zone.
  • Use the bar above the minimap correctly to judge how long you have to loot: the timer is how long you have until the blue starts moving; the blue bar fills up the closer the blue circle gets to the white; the white man running shows how far away you are from the circle; a greyed-out man on the far right shows you're already in the safe zone white circle.

The Best Places To Start On PUBG 's Desert Map

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’ desert map of Miramar is a massive sprawl of cities, mountain complexes and hidden bases. The new map’s sheer scale provides an overwhelming number of potential locations to drop into at the start of a match. Here are some of the best.

Related Content

A good drop zone has two things: reliable loot and strong map positioning. Major cities offer plenty of good loot but draw a lot of attention. More remote areas are safe but leave players far outside the playzone. The drop zones below are relatively safe to drop in, have loot, and make great staging grounds on the path to chicken dinner.

At and around Hacienda del Patron

Okay, this one isn’t all that safe but the hacienda is a popular drop location for good reason. The loot is superb and more than enough for a squad of four. The initial drop can be difficult if multiple enemies join you, but the payoff is worth it. Hacienda del Patron should be one of the first places you think about dropping in a squad game, but the surrounding area works for solos and duos. That’s the real reason it’s on the list: you don’t need to drop directly into the mansion to make this location work.

If you land further to the north, between the hacienda and the water treatment plant, there is a series of homesteads that are low risk and should be able to stock up duos with a solid arsenal. This is my favorite place to drop in solo matches as well. If the playzone ends up towards the west side of the map these houses can be traversed in a counterclockwise rotation for a series of buildings full of loot that are usually low on enemies.

The coastal town of Impala is a low-risk drop zone that tends to draw a small crowd, as many players will jump into the nearby city of Los Leones. Impala is small but dense, with tons of buildings to pillage. Players shooting towards the north of the city can land in an industrial plant with multiple levels that often hold plenty of scopes and assault rifles. Loot can also spawn underneath some of the larger structures. Many players fail to check these areas, but they shouldn’t be missed.

Impala’s downside is its surrounding terrain. Unless you’re sticking to the roads, the only option is to run west across one of the flattest and most barren parts of the map. This can be dangerous, but Impala’s reliable loot makes up for it.

La Cobrería

La Cobrería is tucked up near the top of the map. While players run the risk of landing far away from the playzone, the city offers a lot of options. It’s dotted with apartments and a school campus that has solid loot. Cars often spawn on the streets if you need to get the hell out of the city quickly or travel far towards the playzone. It’s a solid squad drop location that should get players stocked up for the match. Solo players worried about too many enemies can consider pushing slightly west of the city, where a small homestead should provide a variety of weapons.

North Los Leones

The city itself is a deathtrap that players would do well to avoid dropping directly into, but the north side of Los Leones boasts a trio of large buildings that contains a lot of good loot. This drop is very risky but can lead to great things.

San Martin outskirts

The city of San Martin is a popular drop point, but many players ignore the crumbling buildings on its northern hill. This location spawns a disproportionately high amount of armor, helmets, and scopes. Weapon spawns are less reliable, but the proximity to the city proper means players can rotate and rush to grab loot there. If that doesn’t seem appealing, they can run west to a small smattering of houses. This location can be risky since you’ll drop close to a lot of armed players, but the loot (and the ability to run for the hills if needed) gives it a lot of appeal, particularly in solo matches.

Okay, hear me out. Stuck in a small canyon to the far west end of the map, the ruins aren’t in a good spot, and there are next to no vehicles to help stranded players get to the playzone if they’re unlucky. But the ruins have a glut of assault rifles and essentially zero risk. The location is so remote that most players don’t even bother, which leaves a free loot buffet for anyone who actually does drop here. This location is a huge gamble, but it’s worth it.

Avoid these at all cost:

Pecado: The boxing ring in Pecado is becoming increasingly popular for squad drops, comparable to Erangel’s school drop location. Solos and duos should shy away from the city, as it is too compact and too popular. Squads should drop with extreme caution and consider Chumacera to the south or wait until they can drop in the area of Hacienda del Patron.

If you do drop near Pecado and end up with only grenades, do what I did:

Trailer Park: There’s nothing here but regret and tears. Don’t drop here. Seriously, what are you thinking? Is this a joke? Drop anywhere else.

PUBG Desert Map Name and Features Revealed

Miramar is the official name of the new desert map coming to PUBG soon. No release date has been revealed just yet, though.

Charles Singletary Jr

The long-awaited desert map is nearly upon us with a gameplay debut planned for the upcoming Game Awards tomorrow, but the devs aren't keeping us completely in the dark until then. Today, the map's name has been revealed to be Miramar and a new blog post breaks down key locations alongside some new screenshots.

Key landmark and town descriptions below were taken from the post on the PUBG steam page . The new map seems pretty exciting and it's neat to see that there is some water in this map, albeit quite a small amount. The mountains seen in one of the screenshots could provide some very interesting moments in Miramar and we'll get a chance to try them when it arrives in test servers soon . What are you most excited about? Take a peek and let us know in Chatty.

  • The largest city in the region, Los Leones features ample shopping, a skyline filled with new construction, and a glorious, golden-hued City Center. Players should secure high vantage points by exploring the numerous construction sites, and loot for gear in the cavernous, abandoned commercial buildings.
  • El Pozo is a city known for its large industrial and entertainment districts. Players can test themselves against all comers in the Luchador Arena, put their motorcycle skills to the test In the death bowl, or hunt in the ruins of the long dead textile factories.

Monte Nuevo

  • Monte Nuevo is the picture of a town besieged. Ramshackle walls built to protect its residents now allow players ample cover to explore the well-stocked compound.

Valle del Mar

  • Valle del Mar is a colorful oceanside town bisected by the De Toro bridge. To the West of the bridge is a quaint school, and to the East, a beautiful church. The key to holding this town is bridge control, as it’s the only direct route between mainland and the island.

La Cobreria

  • The shipping and transport capitol of Miramar, La Cobrería’s most prominent feature is it’s enormous Rail Yard. Here, players will hunt and be hunted among the half-buried cargo of a long dead industry. Careful players should loot the schools and campuses that dot this town before attempting to hold the Yard.
  • San Martín is located just west of Hacienda Del Patrón. Checkpoints and barriers have transformed this once-quiet small town into a war zone. Both sides of the town have overlooks , so careful players should scout first, before charging into town.
  • Once a tourist destination featuring the largest casino in the region, Pecado continues to thrill players to this day with its mix of high-value loot and dangerous sightlines. Aggressive players will immediately loot the Arena and Casino, but savvy players should check out the 4 story hotels between them.
  • Chumacera is the husk of Miramar’s once thriving textile industry. Long abandoned factories overlook a main road lined with residential and commercial buildings. Verticality in both the buildings and terrain make this town an exciting location to loot- high risk, high opportunity!

PUBG Desert Map Officially Revealed, Here Are All The Details

Take a closer look at Miramar.

By Kevin Knezevic on December 7, 2017 at 6:09AM PST

We've known for some time that PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds will be getting a new desert map , but up until now, publisher Bluehole hadn't shared many details about it, aside from teasing a few work-in-progress screenshots of the environment. That's now changed, as the publisher has officially revealed the map and when players will have a chance to play on it.

Known as Miramar, the new arena is a far cry from PUBG's current map, the lush Erangel. It encompasses industrial areas, beach towns, arid desert land, and more, which the developers say will dramatically change how players approach the survival game. "The unique terrain and dense urban areas of Miramar will create a new Battle Royale experience where the old strategies may no longer work and new tactics are required," the development team wrote in a post on the Steam forums .

On top of the harsh landscape, Miramar is home to at least eight major cities, each of which features different kinds of buildings and constructions that will affect your strategy. Here's how the development team describes each location:

  • The largest city in the region, Los Leones features ample shopping, a skyline filled with new construction, and a glorious, golden-hued City Center. Players should secure high vantage points by exploring the numerous construction sites, and loot for gear in the cavernous, abandoned commercial buildings.
  • El Pozo is a city known for its large industrial and entertainment districts. Players can test themselves against all comers in the Luchador Arena, put their motorcycle skills to the test In the death bowl, or hunt in the ruins of the long dead textile factories.

Aggressive players will immediately loot the Arena and Casino, but savvy players should check out the 4 story hotels between them.
  • Chumacera is the husk of Miramar’s once thriving textile industry. Long abandoned factories overlook a main road lined with residential and commercial buildings. Verticality in both the buildings and terrain make this town an exciting location to loot--high risk, high opportunity!

Miramar will also feature a new vehicle, a retro-looking pickup truck that will be exclusive to the map. Players will also be able to find a new weapon, the Win94, which will likewise appear exclusively in Miramar as a world spawn.

Players will have a chance to compete on Miramar during the "final test round" before PUBG's version 1.0 release. That is slated to launch before the end of December, so you should be able to try the anticipated new map sometime this month. PUBG will also release in early access on Xbox One via the Xbox Game Preview program next week, on December 12.

Breaking news, tourists slammed for posing naked in popular desert spot: ‘very sickening’.

They de-nude-ed the landscape.

Another day, another instance of tourists disrespecting a landmark.

This time, foreign sightseers angered Namibian authorities after posing naked atop the legendary Big Daddy Dune in the Namib Desert, as seen in photos circulating on social media .

“It is very sickening and it really [creates] a bad image for Namibia,” Kenneth Nependa, vice-chairperson of the Federation of Namibian Tourism Associations, told the Namibian Sun, the BBC reported.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Namibian (@thenamibian)

He added that these antics risked attracting tourists who think that “anything goes” in the southern African nation.

Accompanying footage and video, snapped by an unknown source, shows the unnamed trio strutting about in their birthday suits atop the over 1,000-foot-tall sand mound, which is reportedly popular with families.

Visitors didn’t appreciate the tourists treating the scenic site like a nude beach and called on tourism officials to take action against the crass culprits.

Authorities haven’t yet publicly identified the sandy stripteasers, who allegedly left Namibia by the time authorities received the reports.

Tourists on a dune.

However, the nudists could be banned from entering the country’s parks, according to tourism ministers, who added that the “extremely shocking” act was public indecency and therefore punishable by local law.

In light of the indecent incident, officials are calling on visitors to report violators to authorities so they can deal with them accordingly.

“We appeal to that section of tourists to summon the conscience so that they do the right things,” declared Romeo Muyunda, a spokesperson for the ministry of environment, forestry and tourism.

However, many social media users disagreed that the incident was problematic.

“Why are they in trouble? They bothered no one,” an X user declared, according to the BBC, while another claimed that there is “nothing wrong with sunbathing.”

Big Daddy is one of the three largest dunes in Namibia’s Namib-Naukluft National Park and is a popular destination among sightseers looking to get a picturesque view from its crest.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds desert map officially revealed as Miramar

Miramar is the official name for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds' next map, which has so far been simply referred to as the desert map.

The name was unveiled today by PUBG developer PUBG Corp. In a blog post, the developer shared screenshots of the final layout, complete with town names and a little bit of info about some of the hottest spots.

PUBG Corp said that the goal with Miramar was to create a different environment from Erangel, the current map. This is not only reflected in their choice of aesthetics and topography, but also in the gameplay opportunities the new map offers that differ from Erangel.

There are lots of of dense urban areas, and the developer says it'll require learning new tactics. As you've no doubt seen in the countless layout leaks and datamines , Los Leons is the largest city in Miramar.

The city features shopping areas, and lots of under-construction places with vantage points that PUBG Corp confirmed will be accessible. Take a look at all the new screenshots below, alongside location descriptions direct from the developer.

This feature was originally published in PC Gamer magazine in mid-October. As such, the stats here are out of date, but we've kept them here for context and ease-of-reading in the article—PUBG's peak concurrent users now exceed 2.5 million per day. It's fair to assume the desert map has come a long way since our hands-on below, too. If you enjoy this feature, you can currently subscribe to our magazine for less in our holiday sale.

Every single second in Asia, a new solo match of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds begins. At peak times, that number rises to ten new games per second. With a concurrent player count that has recently swollen to over 1.5 million, an unanticipated problem has arisen for the unanticipated smash hit. PUBG's cloud server service simply doesn't have enough servers to accommodate the Early Access battle royale shooter's massive and still-growing playerbase.

I'm given this information during a visit to the offices of Bluehole, PUBG's developer, in South Korea. Over the two days I've been here, I've twice tried to interview platform team lead Seungwoo Shin, who is in charge of PUBG's servers. Whenever we've attempted to talk, he's been simply (and understandably) too busy. We finally get to speak for about 15 minutes on my second day, and throughout the interview I feel mildly guilty for cornering him in a conference room: while soft-spoken and incredibly polite, Shin has the restless body language of a man who knows that he is desperately needed elsewhere.

Shin tells me through interpreter Sammie Kang (PUBG's marketing and events manager) that he only came into the office once every few days as a consultant when he began working on PUBG. As Bluehole's last-person-standing shooter quickly grew to become one of the most-played games in the world, Shin's somewhat casual job became, shall we say, a bit more demanding.

"So, now our team has to come into the office every weekend and manually monitor all the servers," Shin says. "It would be done automatically, usually, but we have to monitor server capacity very closely and make sure the servers are available for certain regions if there's a great increase in certain areas."

Shin also tells me briefly about his history in the tech industry. He attended KAIST, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (basically, Korea's equivalent to MIT). Early in his career, he founded an IT company, then took a long break. He returned to work to become an engineer for Bluehole Ginno Games' MMORPG Devilian, then he took an even longer break, for two years, which he spent living in Australia.

"How long of a break will you need after Battlegrounds?" I ask.

Shin doesn't wait for Kang to translate, and he answers in English, laughing softly, "Forever."

First man standing

Shin isn't the only one at Bluehole who attended KAIST. Chang Han Kim, CEO of the newly formed PUBG Corp, also attended, acquiring a PhD in computer science (Kim is also the one who invited Shin to work on both Devilian and PUBG). Kim, more commonly called CH, has been in the gaming industry for over 16 years. "I'm not someone who started this because I was in love with games," he says, with Kang interpreting. "I'm more like a startup entrepreneur, that's how I started my career, I was a founder of different companies in the past." Those 16 years, as he describes them, were not successful. "I kept failing," he says. "And I was desperate and miserable after failing for 16 years and I was, like, maybe I should stop making games. I really should give up."

While CH was preparing to launch MMO Devilian in North America with publisher Trion, he discovered Steam and Twitch. At the time, he says, everyone in Korea was focused on mobile games. But CH saw how many users were on Steam's platform, and examined its Early Access programs, as well as other crowdfunding tools like Kickstarter. He decided to try again. "I don't mind failing again, so what about we try something new?"

"No one was making a serious PC game here, and no one in America knew about us. We were just a small Asian company that's based in Korea, and I thought if we had this can-do attitude and not be afraid of failing, we will learn something valuable."

Two incidents led to PUBG's iconic bulletproof frying pan. Brendan Greene wanted to add the pan to the game as a melee weapon, a homage to the frying pan in the 2000 Japanese film Battle Royale, the inspiration for the game mode. The only issue? The film didn’t feature a frying pan: Greene had misremembered.

As for the bulletproof nature of the pan: that, too, was something of an accident. Programmer Marek Krasowski set it up as a test one day just for fun. A few weeks later, the bulletproof pan was mistakenly included in an update that made it into the game. Fans discovered this and began posting videos of it. Krasowski read about it on the PC Gamer website.

The puzzle pieces began to come together: the popularity of Steam and Twitch, and the rise of survival games in Early Access following DayZ. Plus, Brendan Greene, creator of battle royale mods for Arma 2 and Arma 3, had finished working on H1Z1: King of the Kill and returned to Ireland.

"I looked deeper into it and came to realise [H1Z1] wasn't really [Brendan's] project," CH says. "He helped bring King of the Kill to H1Z1, but he was a consultant for [about] a month or so. They had this base game which is a zombie survival, and King of the Kill was just a mode on top of it, so it wasn't [Brendan's] kind of battle royale. And he still wanted to do something more that could help him create the battle royale he wanted, and I wanted to create a true standalone battle royale that [was] made from scratch, and was solely focused on creating that battle royale experience from start to end."

The rest is—and continues to make—gaming history, as PUBG keeps shattering records and racking up milestones seemingly every few weeks. With over 13.5 million copies sold ( 20 million in the time since publication—ed ), and PUBG climbing the Steam charts to overtake every other game's player counts (including Dota 2's). Greene sums up Battlegrounds' rise: "It's been a crazy year.

"When I first had my interview here with the management," Greene says, "my job interview, essentially, they said to me, 'How many copies do you expect to sell?' and I kind of just said, 'Oh, a million, month one.' And that was my own confidence in the game mode. I thought it would do well. But I didn't expect the success we've seen. I don't think anyone in here expected it. And it's been a hell of a ride."

"We never had numbers as our goal, and success wasn't our goal at all when we first started," CH says. "I told the team, if we achieve the goals, the numbers will follow us, the success will follow afterwards, and our goal was to make the best battle royale—our vision when we first started this.

"Our goal was to deliver PC 1.0, fully release it by the end of this year and deliver it to our customers. That was our goal. And I keep telling it to our team, and I think that's what keeps them motivated and that's why they don't really care about numbers and they can still be hard at work trying to meet that goal."

Part of that vision for PUBG's exit from Early Access is the arrival of a new desert map, the second planned arena for Battlegrounds. The map is a work in progress, with some textures, features and even entire locations missing: a large city has been removed from the build I'm touring until it's better optimised, and the zone marked for a military base is currently barren. What is available, however, feels like a natural fit for PUBG's looting and shooting. Far from the barren sandscape I'm half-expecting as I become (I'm told) the first person outside Bluehole to set virtual foot inside it, I instead find a sprawling battle arena dotted with desert trees, cacti and a surprising number of buildings. It's immediately noticeable how much more variation there is to the terrain than in Erangel, PUBG's current map. There are hills, rises and ditches in the landscape, which create lots of opportunities for cover from sniper fire or, alternatively, convenient places to stage an ambush. I'm told by art director Tae-Seok Jang, who I chat with over Skype—it's a little odd that I have flown from California to South Korea and wound up talking via video with Bluehole's new office in Madison, Wisconsin—that the varied terrain will make a difference not just for those running around in PUBG, but also those driving.

Despite the desert environment, boats will be in play.

"It should feel different and difficult when you're driving your vehicles on different parts of the world," Jang tells me, with Kang interpreting. "So, we really want to create a unique experience on our new map, so when you're actually driving off-road it feels like it's realistic and different, so we want to really pursue that.

"On top of that, when you use a clean paved road you'd be able to move faster, but you should be exposed more to your enemies, so we really want to take that into account. And when you're in bumpy environments, you should be able to find cover pretty easily, but you're taking a shortcut to get somewhere, so it should be difficult to drive."

desert tourist pubg

It does feel, in my limited time on the new map, like there is a real difference: going off-road feels like a bumpier experience, with less solid control over the vehicles than while driving on terrain in the original map.

"But it really depends on which vehicle you have, so you should be able to make a choice, which vehicle you prefer for your strategy. Like, some vehicles will be more optimised for clean roads, some will be more optimised for off-road driving."

I'm not playing a match on the desert map (which at this point has not even been named), I'm just exploring, and with developer tools enabled I can also enable flying (complete with my character extending a single arm in front of him, like Superman) to quickly speed to distant locations—especially useful since, even with the map not yet complete, there is still the blue circle of death closing around me.

With Mexico serving as a source of inspiration for the map, it makes sense that I eventually find a colourful wrestling arena, sure to draw a number of fistfights and melee engagements when players get their hands on it. I also come across a prison, though the land it's situated on may be removed in favour of water: the river, currently snaking around the edges of the desert, may be replaced with ocean to the eastern and southern sides of the map, reminiscent of Chernarus from Bohemia's Arma and DayZ. Either way, despite the desert environment, boats will be in play.

desert tourist pubg

My favourite spots to stop flying and begin running again are three ancient meteor impact craters with small towns inside them, abandoned shops and homes built right on the sunken crater floor. One such town, with more echoes of DayZ, sports the still-burning wreck of a crashed plane. Even with no opponents on the map with me, I can anticipate the tension of looting the buildings in these craters, eyes constantly scanning the high ridge that circles the town for the movement of opportunistic snipers. Even better, I imagine, will be when the blue circle happens to close on one of the crater towns at the end of a match, giving the advantage not to the players peering down from the ridge but to those already hunkered somewhere inside one of the buildings.

"When I first started making battle royale back in Arma 2," Greene says, "I had four maps that sort of randomly rotated, and you never really knew which map you were playing on. The idea was that the more maps you have, the more you're testing the player because they can't remember every detail about the map." I point out that players of CS:GO, for example, are often happier sticking with one map, like de_dust2, playing it for years on end until they've memorised the layout, the geometry, every route and feature and quirk, until they can play it essentially on autopilot.

"That's why I created battle royale in the first place," says Greene. "Because what I thought was like, with CS:GO, you know every pixel on the map. And for me, battle royale was set up to test a player in the moment. And it wasn't reliant on their knowledge of every pixel on the map. You have to be the better player.

"Yes, players like to be kept in a comfort zone. 'I love this map because I know it backwards.' And the whole idea behind the battle royale game mode is to take them out of their comfort zone, and kind of make them think, and make a game hard, basically, for them, which I think we've shown [with PUBG] that players like hard games."

Desert storm

I ask both Greene and Jang about possibilities for the future of the desert map. While PUBG has had foggy weather added recently, sandstorms would feel much more appropriate here. The dusty setting dotted with cacti also gives the map a real cowboy feel. Might we see six-shooters instead of AK-47s? Instead of travelling the map in cars, how about on horses?

"So our [action and gunplay lead] Pawel [Smolewski] really wants to do that," Jang says in regard to horses. "And there are a lot of Western movies that are based on desert areas, so we would love to see places where you think, 'Oh, you could make a western movie in this area,' so the sky's the limit. We'd love to see that and that is something players would love to see. So, who knows?" There's a laugh. "Pawel wants to do it."

desert tourist pubg

And, while the Erangel map features matches set during different times of the day, PUBG players may get to see something a bit more extreme in the desert: nighttime.

"Another thing we're testing is when it's dark, it's not really dark-dark, it's not like in the middle of the night or midnight, but it's dark enough so it feels a bit different, so we're going to test it. We don't know if we're going to roll it out, but we're seeing how things are with lighting."

With the new map and vaulting in PUBG's near future, Bluehole is also looking further down the line for features like mod support (which won't arrive until "next year, at this stage", according to Greene), and of course the formation of the new Bluehole subsidiary to manage "development and global business opportunities" for Battlegrounds. I ask about the new company, though I'm not told much about what it might mean for the future of Battlegrounds. In fact, during my visit, it sounds like they haven't settled on a name yet—all CH will say is that ‘PUBG' will probably be in the title (the day after I leave South Korea, it's announced as PUBG Corp).

Greene doesn't have a lot to say about the subsidiary, either. "That's all bizdev," he tells me, though a moment later he grows more excited. "Like, I've heard that we're the PUBG company. And that's awesome. It's like, you know, my fucking name's in a company, like, what the fuck?"

Christopher Livingston

Chris started playing PC games in the 1980s, started writing about them in the early 2000s, and (finally) started getting paid to write about them in the late 2000s. Following a few years as a regular freelancer, PC Gamer hired him in 2014, probably so he'd stop emailing them asking for more work. Chris has a love-hate relationship with survival games and an unhealthy fascination with the inner lives of NPCs. He's also a fan of offbeat simulation games, mods, and ignoring storylines in RPGs so he can make up his own.
