2023 Dodge Hornet Plug-in Hybrid

What You Need to Know

Your eyes don't deceive you: What you see before you really is a new Dodge — the first new Dodge, it's worth noting, since the Charger and Durango debuted well over a decade ago. At first glance, the 2023 Dodge Hornet is the anti-Dodge. It's a small crossover that bears little familial resemblance — both in terms of styling and concept — to the aggressively masculine, supercharged V8-powered Charger, Challenger and Durango. But a look at its powertrains illustrates how this compact SUV still shares a spirit with those vehicles. The engines are just a bit more 21st century.

Most other extra-small crossovers prioritize efficiency over performance. For example, check out the modest outputs of the Honda HR-V (158 horsepower) and Toyota Corolla Cross (169 hp). But credit Dodge for keeping its performance-oriented image on point for the Hornet. For the base GT trim, Dodge fits a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder good for a muscular 268 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. That's quite a lot for a little SUV and it's comparable to what you get from a performance hatch, like a Volkswagen GTI.

Paired to a nine-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive, the powertrain combination is said to be good for a 0-60 mph sprint of 6.5 seconds. That's quicker than just about every other model in the class and should keep it neck-and-neck with the other hot rod of this class, the Mazda CX-30 with its available turbocharged 250-hp engine.

If you want a surer bet in your quest for stoplight dominance, wait a little longer for the Hornet R/T. The R/T swaps in a turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder instead. While that doesn't sound impressive on its own, the R/T's plug-in hybrid component really gives this Hornet its stinger.

Combined output between the engine and electric motor stands at 288 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. The Hornet R/T utilizes a six-speed auto and all-wheel drive — good, Dodge says, for a 5.6-second dash to 60 mph. However, that's only if you engage the PowerShot feature, which temporarily supplies the Hornet with extra 30 hp for a limited time, presumably by draining the battery a bit quicker. Dodge says that without PowerShot engaged, the R/T's 0-60 mph time stands at roughly 7.1 seconds.

The R/T isn't just about running lightning laps, however. It's also the more practical of the two powertrains. The 15.5-kWh battery pack is expected to deliver more than 30 miles of all-electric range on a full charge. Expect a recharge to take about 2.5 hours using a Level 2 charger.

I briefly drove a Dodge Hornet R/T and a Hornet GT, and both were equipped with the optional Tech Pack and Track Pack. The Tech Pack adds more advanced driving aids while the Track Pack includes an adaptive dual-mode suspension, upgraded brakes, 20-inch wheels and all-season performance tires. So equipped, the GT offers a relatively spirited driving experience. It's about half a foot longer than a Mazda CX-30, so you won't confuse this for a hot hatch. But it offers enough pep, particularly in Sport mode, to satisfy that itch.

What about the R/T? More horsepower and the eco-cred benefit of being a plug-in hybrid promises to be the best of both worlds. And that's sort of true, at least when you have it in Sport mode. Otherwise, the R/T drives a lot like a vehicle with a 1.3-liter engine. Which is to say, it won't be music to the ears of many Dodge enthusiasts.

I was underwhelmed by the Hornet's dual-mode suspension. My drive route took me along twisty roads that varied in smoothness. The suspension did a decent job of soaking up bumps, though at times the car would continue to wallow around some after hitting an uneven patch of road. It felt a bit like driving on top of a Slinky. We'll have a more definitive take on the Hornet's ride and handling once we're able to perform our full round of testing at the Edmunds test track.

In order to get the 5.6-second 0-60 mph time that Dodge cites for the Hornet R/T, you need to use PowerShot. To engage PowerShot, the Hornet must be in Sport mode. You can then pull back both paddle shifters together, which allows the vehicle to go through a brief systems check. At this point, you must, essentially, push the throttle pedal to the floor to engage PowerShot. There is a detente past full throttle that engages the feature, which can be activated from a stop and while in motion. I tried out the feature a few times during our drive, and while it absolutely perks up the Hornet, I was also left wondering why one would expect anything less from smashing the throttle while the vehicle is in motion.

I drove a Hornet R/T with Alcantara synthetic suede seats and a Hornet GT Plus with leather seats and found both pleasant. If you have long legs, or a wider stance while seated, you might find your right leg bouncing against the hard plastic of the center console. That will get old after a while.

The back seat has plenty of legroom, even for taller passengers. The Hornet is a bit longer than vehicles like the Mazda CX-30 and Honda HR-V and that extra length is probably best felt as a rear passenger. With that said, the back seat is a bit flat and it may be uncomfortable over long rides. And while there are a pair of vents and USB ports (one standard and one USB-C), it's a relatively spartan experience.

Road and wind noise is also very noticeable whether on the highway or on backroads. The test Hornets I drove had the optional 20-inch wheels and tires, but it's hard to say if the Hornet's shoes were much of a factor. Two other nitpicks: The paddle shifters make the turn signal and windshield wiper stalks a difficult reach, and the turn signal noise was pretty irritating.

The Hornet comes standard with a dual-screen cockpit, with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel in front of the driver and a 10.25-inch touchscreen in the center. The latter is loaded with the Uconnect5 user interface, which we've liked in other Stellantis products like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wagoneer. The system also supports wireless smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. GT Plus and R/T Plus models even add some extra oomph from the audio system in the form of a 14-speaker Harman Kardon unit.

Wireless Apple CarPlay worked well and connected to our phone quickly. Wireless charging through the pad under the center screen? Not so much. My iPhone 12 actually lost charge during the 90 minutes it was "charging" on the pad — and that's without being actively connected to Apple CarPlay for the majority of the drive.

As far as the trunk is concerned, not bad! Dodge claims 27 cubic feet of storage space for the GT with the back seats folded up. (The R/T has less because of its hybrid powertrain.) That's comparable to the Volkswagen Taos, which is a similarly sized compact SUV. It's more than what is offered by the Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-30, and the Hornet has a neat pass-through feature for long, skinny items.

Storage for small items is another matter. The water bottle holders are rather small and pedestrian, and the center console is also small. If you regularly carry a small bag or purse, you're probably going to end up leaving it on the passenger seat … or in a passenger's lap. That's also true in the back seat, where there just isn't much small-item storage to speak of.

The Hornet GT starts at $31,590 (with destination), while the Hornet R/T will set you back $41,590 in base trim. But to get a Hornet RT Plus you'll be shelling out an additional $5,000. All that is to say, this is a pricey compact SUV. The Taos starts at just over $24,000, while the Chevrolet Trailblazer is even more economical.

Of course, Dodge will argue neither of those models gets you the type of performance you get with the Hornet. And that is true. You get just 158 horsepower with the Taos, and the Trailblazer only offers 137 hp in its base trim. If you want more than 200 horsepower and plug-in hybrid versatility in your compact SUV, the Hornet is the only vehicle that will do. Whether those extra horses are worth the extra dough, well, that's for you to decide.

Then there's the matter of fuel economy: This is a relatively heavy car, weighing in at around 3,700 pounds in the GT trim. And that, combined with its strong engine, hasn't done its mpg any favors. The trip computer in the GT I drove reported I was getting about 25 mpg, which is in line with EPA estimates. That's quite a bit worse than the competition. The R/T, at least, has the potential to save a lot on gas as long as you're able to charge on a frequent basis.

The Dodge Hornet comes in four trim levels based primarily on the powertrain: GT , GT Plus , R/T and R/T Plus . The GT trims debut first and the R/T trims will launch later in the model year. Feature highlights for each include:

• Lane keeping assistance (steers the Hornet back into its lane if it begins to drift over the lane marker)
• Rear parking sensors

GT Plus Adds more creature comforts, including:

• Power-adjustable front seats

4) 2024 Toyota Prius Prime

The goofy hatchback of the old Prius days is now long gone, and the glow-up is real. The head-turning Toyota Prius Prime could be the game changer for PHEVs.

The two electric motors, combined with a four-cylinder gas engine, will have you gliding from 0 to 60 in only 6.7 seconds. Driving in pure EV mode will get you up to 44 miles, quite respectable for a PHEV. However, teamwork really makes the dream work. When driving with the gas and electric together, the EPA estimates that the Prius Prime will get 50 mpg city and 47 mpg highway. For those of us who are on the fence about driving an EV, or those of us who still want a cool-looking car with great fuel economy… ding, ding, ding, jackpot.

5) 2024 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid

Price: $27,400 EPA-Estimated fuel economy: 54 MPG (combined, Hybrid Blue), 50 MPG (combined Hybrid Limited)

The exceptionally fuel-efficient Hyundai Elantra has been a staple in Hyundai’s lineup for decades. The hybrid version comes in the Elantra Hybrid Blue, and the Elantra Hybrid. Both come equipped with a 1.6-liter, inline 4 which the EPA says can pump out between 50 to 54 mpg combined. Roomier cabin and trunk space compared to its competitors is also a plus. It serves as a great entry hybrid for the driver needing a very practical and efficient source of transportation.

6) 2024 Kia Niro

Price: $ 28,315EPA-Estimated fuel economy: 49 MPG combined (base model). 47 MPG combined, gasoline + electric 108 MPGe, EV range 33 miles (PHEV)

The metamorphosis of the Kia brand continues as it spreads its wings and shows its true colors. The contemporary design of the Niro's interior and exterior keeps Mother Earth in mind by using sustainable materials like eucalyptus leaves for seating material. The second-generation Niro is available in both hybrid and plug-in hybrid form with an abundant number of options. The PHEV adds an additional boost from its powerful motor making 180 hp and an acceptable 0-60 in 7.3 seconds, and can soar from 50 to 70 in just 5 seconds.

7) 2024 Lexus NX Hybrid

If compact luxury and speed are more your style, the Lexus NX has plenty to offer. Delivering both hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, the top-of-the-line plug-in hybrid NX450h+ has a spirited 302 hp and 0-60 in just 5.6 seconds. The interior offers plenty of headroom and rear cargo space. This second-generation infotainment screen also received a much-needed do-over now with a 9.8-inch touchscreen. Comfort and quality were definitely a high priority in Lexus’ redesign.

8) 2024 Dodge Hornet Hybrid

Price: $42,995 EPA-Estimated fuel economy: 29 MPG combined, gasoline+electric 77 MPGe, EV range 33

The Dodge Hornet plug-in hybrid is new for 2024, and debuts as Dodge’s first hybrid plug-in. The AWD hybrid comes equipped with a 1.3-liter, 4-cylinder plus a powerful electric motor creating 288 hp. Local commuting can be done in pure EV mode if your ride is less than 33 miles, and can recharge the battery on a level two charger in less than 2.5 hours. Also, not all hybrids are slow and sluggish during acceleration. Enjoyment can be had from the Powershot boost which heaves the car an extra 30 hp for the more zealous driver.

9) 2024 Lexus UX

Price: $36,690 EPA-Estimated fuel economy: 42 MPG combined (UX 250h). 39 MPG (UX 250h AWD)

The UX is the small-yet-mighty fighter of the Lexus SUV hybrid lineup. This compact SUV comes equipped with a sporty suspension and steering setup, paired with a punchy 181-hp, 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain. The handsome interior, large gauge cluster, and well-proportioned infotainment screen remind you that Lexus knows how to do luxury right.

After being discontinued for the 2020 model year in the US, the Dodge Journey is back. Well, sort of. Last week, the new 2022 Dodge Journey entered production , but it isn't being built for the US market.

Although there were rumors that a next-generation model is in development based on the same platform as the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, the 2022 Dodge Journey is a rebadged version of the Trumpchi GS5 SUV sold in China. In partnership with Stellantis, GAC Motor will export the Journey to the Mexican market. Now, Stellantis has revealed the specifications of Mexico's reborn Dodge Journey.

Compared to the Trumpchi GS5, the 2022 Dodge Journey has a larger grille with a gloss black finish, giving it a more premium appearance. It also features LED headlights and 18-inch or 19-inch alloy wheels depending on the trim.

Under the hood, the 2022 Dodge Journey is powered by a 1.5-liter turbo rated at 169 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. McPherson independent front suspension and multi-link independent rear suspension ensures a smooth ride even on rough roads.

In Mexico, the 2022 Dodge Journey will be available in three trims: SXT, Sport, and GT. As standard, SXT and Sport trims include an analog instrument cluster and a seven-inch LCD digital information screen, while the GT trim gets a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. An eight-inch central touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is offered as standard for all trims.

A 360-degree camera is included with Sport and GT trims. In Mexico, the 2022 Dodge Journey will start at 555,900 pesos ($27,075 USD) for the SXT trim, 615,900 pesos ($29,997 USD) for the Sport, and 645,900 pesos ($31,458 USD) for the GT. Sales of the 2022 Dodge Journey will start at the end of October.

What's new for 2024.

The plug-in-hybrid Hornet is new to the Dodge lineup for 2024, and its hybrid powertrain is the brand's first step in electrification. It'll be followed by the fully electric Dodge Charger EV , which is expected to bow for the 2025 model year.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2024 Dodge Hornet Hybrid starts at $42,995 and goes up to $47,995 depending on the trim and options.

The Hornet Hybrid comes nicely equipped right from the start—as it should, considering its price tag—so we'd stick with the base R/T. A heated steering wheel, heated front seats, 18-inch wheels, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a 10.3-inch infotainment system, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and automatic high-beam headlamps are all standard features. If you want more advanced driver-assistance features, the Tech package will add adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature, a driver-attention monitor, 360-degree parking sensors, and a more sophisticated exterior camera system.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Hornet Hybrid is Dodge's first plug-in hybrid, and it's powered by a turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder and an electric motor combing for 288 horsepower. Instead of the nine-speed automatic from the nonhybrid Hornet, the plug-in hybrid model gets a six-speed automatic but still comes standard with all-wheel drive. The powertrain can temporarily boost output by 30 horsepower via a feature called PowerShot that's activated by pulling both paddle shifters. Around town, the Hornet R/T Plus we sampled felt sprightly. Handling is confident and approaches sporty but isn't as athletic or as satisfying as what you'll find in rivals from Mazda or Volkswagen . It is, however, more engaging than the Tucson Hybrid and Sportage Hybrid, but those crossovers offer a more refined cruising attitude and may suit casual drivers better.

0–60-MPH Times

With the PowerShot mode engaged, the Hornet R/T Plus PHEV hit 60 mph in 5.5 seconds at our test track, matching the Alfa Romeo Tonale's time in the same test. That's unsurprising given the two are essentially identical save for the fact that the Alfa's maximum horsepower isn't locked behind the gimmicky PowerShot feature. Unfortunately, the R/T's acceleration is identical to the much cheaper nonhybrid GT model's, making it difficult to see the value in the hybrid from a performance perspective.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

Both of the Hornet Hybrid trims come with a 12.0-kWh battery pack which is rated for 32 miles of electric driving per charge, and that's a reasonable estimate of what you'll get in real-world driving. On our 75-mph highway fuel economy test route we managed to motor on electricity for 31 miles before the gas engine kicked on to pick up the slack. Charging time on a level 2 charger is around two-and-a-half hours.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The EPA estimates that the Hornet Hybrid is good for 29 mpg combined, or 77 MPGe combined when factoring in the electric range from the onboard battery pack. On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test route, our R/T Plus test vehicle managed 27 mpg highway. For more information about the Hornet's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Hornet Hybrid's cabin is the same size as the Tonale's, which means it's spacious for front-seat riders but tight for those in the back. Interior styling is like the Tonale's too, with the primary controls and infotainment system slightly canted toward the driver and a tall shift lever for the automatic transmission positioned on the center console. The Hornet also uses the same steering wheel as the Alfa Romeo, albeit with a Dodge logo in the center. Black upholstery with red stitching is standard but the R/T Plus trim comes with leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, and a sunroof. Hornet Hybrids ordered with the optional Track package get faux-suede upholstery instead and go without the ventilated seat feature.

Infotainment and Connectivity

All models come with a 10.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital gauge display. The software interface is the latest Uconnect 5 system, which is in use on other Stellantis models such as the Chrysler Pacifica minivan and the Ram 1500 pickup truck . Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard features, as is Amazon Alexa connectivity. Upgrading to the R/T Plus adds a 14-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo and in-dash navigation.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

A host of driver-assistance features are standard on the Hornet Hybrid, including automated emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection. All models also come with blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors. The optional Tech package adds adaptive cruise control with lane-centering, among other features. Dodge offers a fairly typical warranty with all new Hornet models. The Kia Sportage Hybrid has the Dodge beat with a 10-year warranty, and the VW Tiguan comes with two years of complimentary scheduled maintenance.
