2022 DP World Tour (European Tour) schedule: Tournaments, dates, purses and venues

dp world tour golf courses

The 2022 DP World Tour (European Tour) schedule has been announced, with a significant overhaul to the 48-event docket that golf fans have been accustomed to seeing in recent years.

The most significant changes to the schedule are related to the strategic alliance between DP World Tour and the European Tour that was announced in November 2021, changing the name of the tour and raising the minimum value of purses to $2 million.

European Tour co-sanctioned, purse-boosted events

The two tours are co-sanctioning three events on their schedules, including the European Tour's Scottish Open, which has a new sponsor in Genesis, as well the Barbasol Championship and Barracuda Championship on the DP World Tour (European Tour). The fields in all three events will feature a split of player availability between DP World Tour (European Tour) and European Tour pros, including spots for 50 European Tour players in the Barbasol and Barracuda Championships, which will be played opposite the Scottish Open and Irish Open.

The Genesis Scottish Open will remain part of the European Tour's Rolex Series. The Irish Open, which will not be co-sanctioned in 2022, will have a purse boosted by the DP World Tour (European Tour) to $6 million -- nearly double the amount offered this year.

There are a variety of new events on the schedule this year, including the Ras al Khaimah Championship in the UAE, the Pecanwood Classic and Steyn City Championship in South Africa, the Soudal Open in Belgium, two new events in Asia (including one in Japan) and the return of the Cyprus Open.

World Golf Championships halved

Since 2009, there have been four World Golf Championships events on the schedule. However, there are just two on the 2022 schedule: the WGC-HSBC Champions in China from Oct. 28-31 and the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Texas from March 23-27.

With the Memphis-based event becoming a playoff event, the other change is the WGC-Mexico Championship dropping out of the series. A Mexico Championship is listed on the schedule as a full-field event.

10 Things You Didn't Know About The DP World Tour

Here are 10 things you may not be familiar with about the Europe-based circuit

The DP World Tour flag

The DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) is one of the most well-regarded and established circuits in the game, with some of the best-known tournaments around, including the Dubai Desert Classic and its flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship.

While it doesn't boast the same status as the US-based PGA Tour, it still forms an integral part of the game's professional landscape. Here are some facts about the Tour that you may not be familiar with.

1. The roots of the DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) go back to 1972, when the Professional Golfers' Association, which was established 71 years earlier to serve the interests of golfers in Great Britain and Ireland, created it.

2. It began with 20 tournaments and the season ran from April to October. The action took place in nine countries – Spain, England, Ireland, Scotland, France, Switzerland, West Germany, the Netherlands and Italy.

3. The inaugural European Tour event was the Spanish Open, which was held at Golf Club de Pals in Girona. Fittingly, two Spaniards battled it out for the title in a playoff, with Antonio Garrido emerging the winner over Valentin Barrios. The purse for the tournament was £10,000.

4. Nowadays, DP World Tour events take place around the world, but it was strictly a Europe-only affair for the first decade of its existence. That changed in 1982 with the first tournament to be played outside the continent – the Tunisian Open in Africa. Garrido once again claimed the title after beating compatriot Manuel Calero in a playoff.

5. The DP World Tour’s headquarters are at Wentworth in Surrey, England. From there, the PGA European Tour, to give it its legal title, also runs the European Senior Tour (currently the Legends Tour), the developmental Challenge Tour and G4D Tour. It is also the lead partner in Ryder Cup Europe.

6. Some of the highest-profile DP World Tour events take place in Asia, but it wasn’t until 1989 that the continent hosted one of its events with the inaugural Dubai Desert Classic (then called the Karl Litten Desert Classic). The tournament was won by Mark James, who beat Peter O’Malley by four shots to claim the $75,000 first prize.

7. In 2015, including Majors and World Golf Championships, more of the DP World Tour’s tournaments were held outside Europe than within it for the first time.

8. In 1998, The Masters, PGA Championship and US Open were added to the schedule, meaning prize money earned by players in the Majors could be added to the European Tour’s Order of Merit, which affected the end-of-season rankings. Not only that, but with a minimum requirement of 11 appearances needed for players to retain membership of the Tour, the addition of the Majors – along with three World Golf Championships in 1990 – made it easier for players to reach that target.

9. Seve Ballesteros holds the record for the highest number of DP World Tour wins with 50, eight more than Bernhard Langer in second place. Ballesteros’ first win on the Tour came in the 1976 Dutch Open, with the last in his homeland at the 1995 Spanish Open.

10. The total prize money for the inaugural season of the Tour (excluding Majors) was £290,500. Adjusted for inflation, that would be £3.3m today (around $4m). In 2024, the prize fund will be $148.5m (approximately £121.5m).

New era as golf’s European Tour becomes DP World Tour

Published: 09 November 2021 Last updated: 13 May 2022

The European Tour will become the DP World Tour from 2022.

The European Tour will become the DP World Tour from 2022.

The European Tour will become the DP World Tour from the start of the 2022 season in a new era for golf.

The European Tour group and DP World today jointly announced a ground-breaking evolution to their long-term partnership, with DP World becoming the new title sponsor of the group’s main tour from the start of the 2022 season.

WORLD EXCLUSIVE:  Greg Norman on the Asian Tour and breakaway league rumours

The agreement heralds a new era in the history of the European Tour group, which, along with DP World, will celebrate its 50 th  anniversary in 2022, the first season of the newly named DP World Tour.

Today’s announcement represents a significant deal in terms of global sports partnerships, with DP World’s substantial commitment dedicated to three key areas: elevating the Tour in every way, growing the game of golf globally, and driving positive community impact.

New era (from left): Guy Kinnings, Deputy CEO European Tour group, Ryder Cup Director and Chief Commercial Officer, Keith Pelley, Chief Executive of the European Tour group, David Williams, Chairman of the European Tour group, Yuvraj Narayan, Group Chief Financial, Strategy and Business Officer, DP World, Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO and Managing Director of DP World UAE, and Daniel van Otterdijk, Chief Communications Officer, DP World.

The new look DP World Tour will see total prize money break through the $200 million mark for the first time, with a new minimum prize fund of $2 million for all tournaments solely sanctioned by the DP World Tour.

In 2022, the DP World Tour will represent a truly global tour through an international schedule, that will feature a minimum of 47 tournaments in 27 different countries, including new tournaments in the UAE, Japan, South Africa and Belgium and an expanded Rolex Series comprising five events: the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic, the Genesis Scottish Open, the BMW PGA Championship and the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

RELATED: Everything you need to know about the LIV Golf Series

For the first time, it will also feature three tournaments co-sanctioned with the PGA TOUR – the aforementioned Genesis Scottish Open, as well as the Barbasol Championship and the Barracuda Championship taking place in the United States – as a result of the Strategic Alliance between male professional golf’s two leading Tours. The European Tour and DP World were both established in 1972 and have since developed into global enterprises with DP World, which is headquartered in Dubai, evolving into the leading provider of global smart end-to-end supply chain and logistics solutions.

DP World’s association with the European Tour spans more than a decade, first becoming a presenting partner of the European Tour’s Race to Dubai finale at Jumeirah Golf Estates in its inaugural year in 2009, before the Rolex Series event was renamed the DP World Tour Championship in 2012. It was in this year that DP World became the tournament’s title partner.

DP World then became an Official Partner of the European Tour in 2015, and they will now become the Official Title Partner of the Tour from the start of the 2022 season, which begins with the Joburg Open in South Africa, from November 22-25.

Keith Pelley, Chief Executive of the European Tour group, said: “Today’s announcement is undoubtedly a momentous one in the proud history of our Tour. The launch of the DP World Tour in 2022, coinciding with both of our 50th anniversaries, will herald a new era in global golf, and crucially it will benefit everybody involved – all our players, caddies, fans and partners – as well as making an important contribution to wider society.

“The entire ecosystem of our Tour will be strengthened because of this hugely significant deal, and that was essential to us and to DP World, who have been an incredible supporter of our Tour as well as golf more widely, from grassroots through to the elite professional game.

“The DP World Tour is, therefore, a natural evolution of our decade-long partnership, and the presence of ‘World’ in our new title better reflects our global reach.”

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, said: “DP World has been a partner of the European Tour for over a decade. Our long-standing partnership has provided an excellent platform to engage with customers, prospects, and stakeholders, and build our brand. We have relished the opportunity to support the Tour in growing the game of golf and improving access to the sport at all levels. The key to this success has been and will continue to be the shared vision and values that underpin the partnership.

“We both have a global mindset, are committed to inclusivity, and invest in new technologies to stay competitive – attributes which today become the fundamental principles of the DP World Tour. As the leading provider of smart logistics solutions worldwide, we will use our people, assets, and connectivity to help grow the Tour further and change what’s possible in golf.”

Jay Monahan, Commissioner of the PGA TOUR and Board Member of the European Tour, added; “Thanks to the support of long-standing partner DP World, today’s announcement significantly elevates the European Tour on a global basis. We are excited for the continued growth and evolution of the European Tour, as well as the momentum this provides toward our Strategic Alliance. I’ve said before that our respective Tours are positioned to grow – together – over the next 10 years faster than we ever have at any point in our existence, and today’s announcement is another point of proof in those efforts.”

How will DP World’s partnership help to enhance the European Tour?

Biggest prize fund in European Tour history

Overall prize funds in 2022 will be more than $140 million for all tournaments outside the Majors and World Golf Championships, outstripping the previous all-time pre-pandemic high of $130 million in 2019.

Including the Majors and WGCs, the total prize fund on the 2022 DP World Tour will exceed $200 million, benefitting  all tournaments  and  all members  across  all categories .

New $2 million minimum tournament prize fund

For the first time, every tournament solely sanctioned by the DP World Tour will have a minimum prize fund of at least US$2 million, ensuring that all members benefit from this boosted investment.

A record $10 million prize fund for the 2022 DP World Tour Championship

This will make the season finale – the final Rolex Series tournament of 2022 – the first European Tour event in history outside the Majors and WGCs to feature an eight-figure prize fund.

A full and comprehensive 12 month schedule

Jumeirah Earth Course rejuvenated for DP World Tour finale

The Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates has undergone significant sustainable changes ahead of the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

dp world tour golf courses

The Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates has undergone a sustainable rejuvenation ahead of the DP World Tour Championship, the final event in this year’s Race to Dubai.

With multiple course changes designed to improve the aesthetic and playing experience, one of the notable upgrades is the complete replacement of sand in all 100 bunkers on the Earth Course.

In a commitment to environmental responsibility, the additional sand is both new and recycled, with a particularly vibrant white appearance that complements the desert backdrop.

On the 10 th  hole, the bunkers have undergone a more comprehensive refurbishment to ensure optimal playing conditions and a strategic challenge.

Jumeirah

The main playing areas on the course are flanked by wood chips that add a contrast to the green course and sandy desert. To recreate the bright red aesthetic that has become synonymous with the Earth Course, the team has replaced all wood chips surrounding each hole on the course ahead of this year’s DP World Tour Championship. The red-coloured wood chips provide a vivid colour contrast and are all produced on-site by the maintenance team.

Stephen Hubner, Club Manager at Jumeirah Golf Estates, commented:

Stuart Horwood, the club’s Superintendent, added:

The Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates has been host of the DP World Tour’s pinnacle event for more than ten years and will remain the host venue until 2031. In that time, some of the game’s biggest names have hoisted the Harry Vardon Trophy, for the champion of the Race to Dubai. In 2022, Rory McIlroy was crowned champion for the fourth time in his career.

Other recent winners include: Jon Rahm , Collin Morikawa , Tommy Fleetwood , Justin Rose , and recent Ryder Cup winning captain, Luke Donald .

The 2023 Race to Dubai is also set to go to the Northern Irishman, as the points standings after Max Homa’s first DP World Tour victory in South Africa mean that world number two, McIlroy, cannot be caught by second-placed Jon Rahm. This will mark his fifth Race to Dubai title.

Jumeirah

Jumeirah Golf Estates is a world-class residential golf destination offering luxury homes and leisure facilities amidst two internationally-acclaimed championship golf courses, creating an unmatched lifestyle experience in the heart of new Dubai.

Set across 1,119 hectares of lush green landscape, the development is an unrivalled destination offering attractive investment opportunities and world-class amenities. With 700 families and more than 1,835 homes, Jumeirah Golf Estates currently comprises of 16 unique communities, which overlook two of the world’s finest golf courses, Earth and Fire.

10 DP World Tour graduates each have interesting plan for how to tackle new PGA Tour status

1796426883

Adrian Meronk and Ryan Fox are both in Dubai to start the year, while others from the top-10 have joined them. But there are some in Hawaii hoping to get a headstart on the PGA Tour.

David Cannon

DUBAI — European golf has had its “Great Triumvirate” of Harry Vardon, James Braid and J.H. Taylor and, more recently, the “Big Five” comprising Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer, Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam. But only in Ryder Cups have the Old World’s various personalities and nationalities formed proper teams. So it is no surprise, as the DP World Tour resumes this week in Dubai, to see the 10 players who qualified for their PGA Tour cards last season planning the months ahead in their own individual ways.

Five of the 10—Robert MacIntyre, Matthieu Pavon, Alexander Bjork, Ryo Hisatsune and Sami Valimaki—have wasted no time and have made the long journey to Hawaii for this week’s Sony Open. But four are taking it a little slower. Thorbjorn Olesen, Ryan Fox, Jorge Campillo and Adrian Meronk are competing in the DP World Tour’s opening event of 2024, the Dubai Invitational. Only Frenchman Victor Perez is absent from both events.

“It’s a great opportunity for the 10 guys,” says former Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn. “Some will go there and be successful. Some will fall on the faces. But at least they will find out just how good they need to be. In the long run, the more European players who go there, the more the game will become a global sport. I hope for that.

“I think if three or four of them keep their cards, that will be success,” Bjorn continues. “That’s a good number being realistic. The standard on the PGA Tour is higher. The depth of field is higher. And the players have played the courses so many times before. That’s maybe the hardest thing about the first year over there—you are playing new courses every week. That’s so difficult unless you are really good.”

Speaking of really good, Rory McIlroy is not one who agrees with Bjorn’s take.

“The new course thing I never found to be a big impediment to playing well on the PGA Tour,” says the four-time major champion. “Having a base there is more important. You need somewhere to go back to on weeks off. And embracing the culture and the lifestyle is a must. It is different, which is why I would advise them all to stay over there at least through the U.S. Open. They will need to focus on being there for at least five or six months. In that regard it helps to befriend guys who have been there a while. There are plenty of Europeans who will be happy to play practice rounds and make them feel a bit more comfortable. Bottom line: they have been given an amazing opportunity.”

1744999580

Scotland's Robert Macintyre is starting his year in Hawaii on the PGA Tour, looking for early success.

Quality Sport Images

Still, Bjorn’s overall words of caution are not without merit. Each of the new cardholders will have to find the way best suited to them. Which is why different agendas are clearly already at play.

“Getting my PGA Tour card is obviously going to change a lot of things for me this year,” says Olesen, who makes his home in Dubai. “My plan is to play a bit on both the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour. I’m clearly starting here, but after three events in the Middle East, I’m heading across the Atlantic. I won’t be back in Europe until the summer.

“I wanted to begin here simply because I live here,” he explains. “And I like the events in this part of the world. So it made sense. When I was single I could go over there and stay as long as I wanted. Now there are other logistics in play. I was never really tempted to go over there now. I just wanted to stay in Dubai a bit longer. I’ll be at home for the next three weeks. It’s just priorities.”

In contrast to most, Campillo is actually playing down his new status. The Spaniard, who spent four years at Indiana University, intends to play the next five events on the DP World Tour before venturing across the Atlantic. Indeed, it isn’t hard to detect a lack of self-belief in the 37-year-old’s view of what lies ahead.

“I’m going to play over here until Qatar before I go to the States,” says the three-time DP World Tour winner. “I’ll start in Mexico. Then Florida and Texas. I’ll play six before I come back here. That’s more than enough. Then I’ll see how it goes. If not well, I’ll be back here next year. It will depend on how well I do in my first 11 events. I’ll make the decision then, whether I stay in the States or come back over here. I know it will be a great experience. But I’m happy where I am right now. It’s not as if I can’t wait to play on the PGA Tour. I’m not super-excited; put it that way.”

That downbeat attitude is, not surprisingly, in complete contrast to the demeanor displayed by Meronk. The Pole, in the wake of his controversial omission from the European Ryder Cup team, finished top of the 10-man qualifying list and so is exempt from the re-rank the other nine will be subject to in April. Already, he knows he can play in virtually every PGA Tour stop outside of the elevated events.

“I’ll start at Torrey Pines,” says Meronk. “Hawaii was just too far to go. Plus, there is no rush. I’ll go to the States with two events under my belt, which makes sense I think. I won’t be back in Europe until the Scottish Open. My goal is to get a win and get comfortable on the PGA Tour. I want to make it to the Tour Championship and finish the season in the world’s top 30. I know it will be a big change. And I’m trying to take things slowly. But I have big goals.”

Meronk has even gone as far as to make an adjustment to his address position—one that will be put into play when he gets to San Diego. Because of the need to hit approach shots higher to the generally firmer and faster American greens, Meronk and swing coach Matthew Tipper are working on moving the ball maybe half-a-ball width forward in his stance.

“I’ve talked to a couple of guys about how high you need to hit the ball over there,” says the former Irish Open and Australian Open champion. ‘So I’ve tried a couple of different ball positions just to see how much difference that can make. I’ll try it when I get there, although I’m sticking to my norm here this week.”

1919303084

Thorbjorn Olesen lives in Dubai so it was an easy decision for him to start his season at the event so close to his home.

Warren Little

Fox is another excited at the prospect of furthering a career that has flourished over the last few years.

“After two weeks here in Dubai, I’m heading to the States,” says the New Zealander. “My plan is basically to play in pretty much every event I can get into. I might even get into the elevated events through my World Ranking, which makes playing well here a priority. If I get into those my schedule will fill out nicely.

“Long-term I’d like to play on both tours,” he continues. “I’ve always struggled a little in the States. Not with the playing—the courses generally suit my game—but with the culture. It’s just different, so I haven’t enjoyed it as much as I would like to. But this year my family is going to travel with me. Hopefully that will make things a little easier off the course. Whatever, I’m going to give it my best shot. Playing on the PGA Tour has been my dream ever since I started playing golf.”

As to how the disappearance of 10 of the tour’s best players will affect the DP World circuit, Bjorn is philosophical. Gravitating westward has long been a fact of professional life for those Europeans with ambition to compete against the best on a regular basis.

“Speak to almost any young player today and the PGA Tour is where they want to play their golf,” says the Dane. “It is the place to be, the pension fund, a big attraction. It’s not only the prize money. The pension is a huge selling point. It’s a shame for the DP World Tour that we can’t compete stature-wise, but [chief executive] Keith Pelley tried with the big-money Rolex events to make it more attractive over here. He wanted 12 of those but the players didn’t want to support that many. So we ended up with only four. Which was down to the players. I’m not blaming them, it’s just the situation they were in.”

The 2024 China Open makes its highly anticipated return to the DP World Tour schedule, as the country's premier open golf tournament is set to unfold from May 2-5 at the Hidden Grace Golf Club in Shenzhen.

Shenzhen (China): The 2024 China Open makes its highly anticipated return to the DP World Tour schedule, as the country's premier open golf tournament is set to unfold from May 2-5 at the Hidden Grace Golf Club in Shenzhen.

After a five-year hiatus from the DP World Tour, the 29th edition of the Volvo China Open, boasting a total prize fund of 2.25 million U.S. dollars, will showcase a diverse field of accomplished and rising stars from around the world of golf.

Among them are England's Jordan Smith, who has a total of seven professional victories to his credit, the 2022 European Tour winner Yannik Paul of Germany, and 29-year-old Zander Lombard from South Africa, who opened the season with a second-place finish at the Bahrain Championship in February, alongside defending champion Sarit Suwannarut.

Suwannarut secured victory last year in Shenzhen with impressive scores of 65 and 64 in the third and fourth rounds, marking his second win on the Asian Tour following his first-place finish at the Indonesian Masters in 2022, reports Xinhua.

"I'll be focusing on the process and what I can control and hopefully it pays off. I'm looking forward to winning and playing alongside the top players in the world," said the 26-year-old Thai golfer.

Previous China Open champions Nicolas Colsaerts (2011), Alexander Levy (2014, 2017), Wu Ashun (2015), Li Haotong (2016), Zhang Huilin (2020), and Zhang Jin (2021) will also tee it up in this year's tournament.

Corales Puntacana Championship - Final Round

Eleven months ago, after the first round of the Memorial Tournament, Billy Horschel stood in front of the media and fought back tears as he talked about his lack of confidence.

He had just fired a 12-over 84, which served as a metaphor for his struggles throughout the 2023 season. Horschel missed 10 cuts a year ago, which led to him missing out on the FedEx Cup Playoffs .

As such, Horschel did not meet the qualification requirements to play in this week’s RBC Heritage —the fifth Signature Event of the 2024 season . But he still wanted to play, knowing that his game was trending in the right direction.

So, he teed it up at the Corales Puntacana Championship in the Dominican Republic, an opposite full-field event.

The decision paid off.

Corales Puntacana Championship

Horschel began the final round three strokes behind Wesley Bryan, but he stormed past him and all the others to win by two. The former Florida Gator signed for a 9-under 63, which tied the course record, to win for the first time on the PGA Tour since the 2022 Memorial.

“This game of golf is so fickle. I think you can put a lot into it and get everything you want out of it,” Horschel said after his win on Sunday.

“But I knew in my 14 years, 13 years previously on the PGA Tour, that I had the ability, I had the talent. I just needed to continue to work hard, do the right things, and continue to believe that good stuff was going to come to the forefront at some point in time.”

Even though his victory did not come against the likes of Scottie Scheffler , Wyndham Clark , Rory McIlroy, or any other elite PGA Tour players, Horschel still holds this win—and other opposite field events—in high regard.

“The PGA Tour has a lot of tournaments, and it’s tough for every tournament to get its due. Opposite-field events have been crucial for many players coming up the ranks,” Horschel explained.

“Look at Tony Finau, Viktor Hovland winning in Puerto Rico, Matt Wallace won this. So listen, it’s another opportunity to play, it’s another opportunity to become a better player, to get that win on the PGA Tour. These events are crucial to the PGA Tour in the sense of the growth of the development of the players on the PGA Tour.”

Horschel’s victory in the Dominican Republic vaults him from 76th to 45th in the FedEx Cup rankings. The top 70 players earn entry into the FedEx Cup Playoffs, so yes, this win carries significant weight.

But Horschel would not have been able to finish the job without his strong psyche and ability to handle pressure down the stretch.

“I don’t like talking about myself but growing up, I always wanted the ball when I was a pitcher; I always wanted to be the guy at battle trying to drive in the winning run; I always wanted to have it on me,” Horschel explained.

“I think growing up and having that mentality, I have grown into Ioving being in the lead. I love having that spotlight on me; I love having everything on me, knowing that if I mess up, it’s my fault, and I am the one who can control my destiny. I’ve always been really good up near the lead, and today, I showed that a little bit.”

Horschel made five birdies on the front nine to soar toward the top of the leaderboard at the midway point of his round. True to himself, he did not fold down the stretch, but rather, he thrived. His eagle at the par-5 12th gave him a two-shot lead with six holes to play, and he never relinquished it.
