Valencia Food Tour – Review, Tips, What To Expect And More

Tapas spread

From what kind of delicious foods you’ll be sampling, to tips for your trip, find out all you need to know about booking a Valencia food tour.

I’ve just returned from an incredible week in Valencia. It was a special trip for personal reasons – a place I’d been dying to visit and booked to travel to on my own. You can read a bit more about the decision I made here . It was time to create the trip I wanted, and structure my days how I pleased.

When I was looking for things to do in Valencia , I knew food would feature heavily! I always try to go on a food tour when I’m abroad, as I think it’s the best way to get to know a place. The cuisine tells you so much about a destination, and gives you a great introduction to the culture and the local people.

I found a few Valencia food tours around (some involving making your own paella), but knew that I wanted to do a tapas tour with a local. I was travelling solo, so having a dinnertime activity was appealing – better than yet another candlelit dinner for one!

Planning your trip to Valencia? Here are a few quick highlights:

List Image

Valencia food tour – The Group

I booked my Valencia tapas tour  through Get Your Guide (a company I’ve used before and trust!) and met guide Gabriel just before 7pm outside Valencia Cathedral. Joining us were a mum and two grown up daughters from The Netherlands and a family of four from England. Eight was a great number – intimate enough to get to know my fellow tour mates, but large enough to have a nice buzz!

Valencia Cathedral

Gabriel explained that over the next two hours we’d be visiting three places, each showcasing a different style of tapas. We’d try around eight different dishes, accompanied by alcoholic or soft drinks.

He was a great host – charismatic, cheeky and full of stories. As we wandered between bars it was nice to chat to him about life in Valencia, his favourite spots and a little more about the culture. He was open and honest, and over the evening covered topics including over tourism in Spain, the Valencian language and why Spanish people eat so late! We even chatted about our experiences in San Sebastian, Madrid and Barcelona – debating where the best Spanish food comes from!

Valencia Food Tour – Stop 1

Our first stop was at La Taberna de la Reina, just across the plaza from the Cathedral. It didn’t look like anything special from the outside, but inside I discovered a bar filled with tasty little morsels on sticks. It was pintxos time!

Pinxtos on bar

I’ve had quite a few pintxos before (mainly in Barcelona), but it was nice to hear more about them. Gabriel recounted their Basque Country origins, a Spanish region which borders France. With access to crusty baguettes, people began to use them as a base, and top with various ingredients. Each pintxo comes with a stick running through it, sometimes of different lengths. Each stick relates to a price, so at the end your waiter can simply count the sticks and let you know what to pay.

Pintxos on our tapas tour of Valencia

At this bar we had the opportunity to choose our own pintxos from the plates on the bar. So much choice – from padron peppers and tortillas, to sausages and prawns. I picked one with ham, goats cheese and a sweet marmalade, and another with a chorizo-like spread called Sobrasada, caramelised onions and ham. They were full of strong flavours, and devoured in just a few bites.

I chose these two tasty pintxos on our food tour of Valencia

This style of cuisine is relatively modern, and Gabriel encouraged us to visit more pintxos bars across the city, as every place has their own unique concoctions! Pintxos in Valencia cost between 1 EUR and 3 EUR, so they’re great as a snack with a drink, or a light lunch.

Valencia Food Tour  – Stop 2

After wandering through the busy streets of the old town, we found ourselves in the El Carmen neighbourhood. We ventured inside the teeny tiny Tasca el Botijo . With pintxos done, it was now time for montaditos. Gabriel explained these are similar to pintxos, as they’re also usually on bread, but usually with a drink.

We started with little slices of baguette topped with sobrasada – that delicious chorizo-like spreadable sausage I’d had earlier. Mmm!

Sobrasada on bread

Then the table was filled with tasty plates of local specialities. I really enjoyed the esgarraet Valenciano – salty cod with garlic and grilled red peppers in oil. Alongside it was a plate of flavoursome sausage with sweet, caramelised onions. There was also a plate of sautéed mushrooms with garlic, parsley and chilli. It was all wonderfully moreish.

Esgarraet Valenciano (cod and peppers)

We heard how usually locals would hold their drink in one hand and a fork in the other, eating straight from the sharing plates in the middle of the table.

Once our glasses and plates were empty, it was time for a little surprise. Gabriel grabbed a glass flask from the bar containing a local liquor known as mistela (made from moscatel grapes). There was a technique involved in drinking from a unique bottle like this, which would be a big challenge for first-timers. Could we do it?

We all gave it a go, much to the amusement of everyone around the table. One guy spilled it everywhere, another almost bit a chunk out of the glass! I fared ok, but didn’t get the flair form the distance or height that Gabriel displayed!

Gabriel showing us how to drink mistella in the traditional way

Valencia Food Tour – Stop 3

Feeling merry after a few glasses of wine and a big gulp of mistela, it was onto the final stop of our Valencia tapas tour. One of my favourite parts of the tour were the relaxed ramblings from place to place, seeing different neighbourhoods and landmarks along the way. We quizzed our guide on a few details, but it was nice just to amble with our new tour mates, and swap stories and recommendations from our time in the city so far.

The family of four had met Gabriel the day before for a different Valencia food tour, taking a trip around the city’s Central Market (Mercado Central) and learning about a different side to the cuisine. Meanwhile, the others had enjoyed mooching around the old city and hopping on bikes to explore a bit further afield.

Exploring the city on a Valencia food tour

Our third and final stop was at a restaurant called Las Cuevas . We ventured to the backroom, and heard how this was a place that specialised in proper tapas. Gabriel ordered a load of dishes for the table and we enjoyed a tasty variety of flavours over the next hour.

We tried a few staples of the tapas scene – padron peppers and patatas bravas. I really enjoyed the deep-fried brie which oozed in the middle and was topped with a sweet strawberry jam.

Padron peppers

Then excitement levels were raised as a sizzling dish of chorizo in boiling hot oil was delivered from the kitchen. The waiter tipped some rum on top and set fire to the dish! What a sight – eyebrows slightly singed, we tucked in and enjoyed the final part of a tasty evening in Valencia.

As the tour came to a close, Gabriel treated us all to one more shot of mistela to toast our evening, snapped some photos of the group, then suggested a few other spots to check out.

Valencia Food Tour – An Impromptu Stop 4

I was leaving the city the next morning and was keen to try out the city’s famous cocktail – Agua de Valencia. Our guide knew just the place, and after such an enjoyable evening together, the entire tour group (minus Gabriel) piled into Café de las Horas and continued the fun for another hour.

A few people on Instagram had recommended this bar to me, and as I entered I could see why. It’s a stunning bar, with plush velvet interiors, painted starry ceiling, and an old-fashioned vibe. We ordered a jug of Agua de Valencia and continued getting to know each other. It was a lovely, and unexpected way to end my time in Valencia.

Cafe De Las Horas, Valencia

I really enjoyed my food tour of Valencia and would recommend it as a good way to understand more about the city’s cuisine and influences, and learn from a local. Also, if you’re a solo traveller in Valencia, it’s a great chance to meet a few new people.

As mentioned, I booked this tapas tour of Valencia via Get Your Guide, a tour booking website that I’ve always had excellent experiences with. If you’re thinking of booking, you can check availability and latest prices here .

  • Top 5 things to eat or drink in Valencia!

Valencia is a wonderful place to eat fresh products, delicious seafood and to find nice restaurants, authentic tapas bars and chic Michelin stars restaurants. But, if you want to know what you definitely should eat in Valencia, read my top 5 about what to eat and drink in Valencia.

agua de valencia recipe

Oranges & Agua de Valencia

Valencian oranges are famous around the world, you should obviously eat them while you are in Valencia. Or pick them yourself during an  Orange picking tour ! Don´t try to eat them from a tree in the city, they taste very sour! Where can you find the best oranges? At  Mercado Central  ! And if you like fruity cocktails based on oranges, you really have to try Agua de Valencia. Maybe, you would think this is a special kind of water (agua), but it is actually a mix from orange juice, cava and strong liquors. The best place I think you can find this delicious cocktail:  Café de las horas , close to Plaza de la Virgen. You can also make your own Agua de Valencia at home. I have a recipe and video for you on how to make Agua de Valencia .

paella casa carmela valencia

The most famous dish from Spain is from Valencia! Valencian paella is not made with seafood but with rabit, chicken, beans and some secret ingredients. If you want to learn how to make one your own have a look into my  paella workshops . Where to find the best Paella in Valencia: In my house, haha that´s what most man would answer to this question 😉 But luckily, there are also lots of restaurants where you can find different kinds of delicious paella. For example: Every Sunday they make a big paella at  café Museo . For 6 euro you get a full plate of paella and a lot of locals to have a chat with! My favourite paella restaurants on the beach are Casa Carmela (€€) La Pepica  (€€) and  La Paz (€). And in the centre city you can find the best one at  Casa Roberto  (calle del mar). Furthermore, there are a lot of nice nice paella restaurants around Albufera natural park, but a bit too many to mention!

horchata farton valencia

Horchata with Fartons

Horchata is a sweet drink made from tigernuts (chufa), it is traditional and very popular here. Order a farton (try not to laugh when ordering) to go with it. You can learn about this tigernuts and see the beautiful fields of chufas, during a biketour. Where to find the best horchata:  Horchateria Daniel  (in Alboraya) or at  Horchateria El collado  in the city centre.

drink tour valencia

Every visitor to Spain wants to ´go for tapas´ but what are exactly tapas? And even a better question, where to get the best? If you want to learn about tapas, you can book a  tapas tour  in Valencia with me. Where to eat good tapas: If you like to try the real thing and have some authentic tapas in a local atmosphere, you have to go to Tasca Angel or in La Pilareta (better know as Bar Pilar). I also recommend you to try some modern version of tapas at Cannalla bistro or fancy tapas with a twist from top chef Quique Dacosta in gastrobar Vuelve Carolina. Don’t forget to try the Pinchos (tapas on a bread with a stick) in Orio.

Buñuelos small Valencia food fallas

Churros con chocolate or Buñuelos de calabaza

Eaten as a snack or for breakfast, Churros is a delicious fried-dough pastry dipped in hot chocolate. And the Buñuelos de calabaza (pumpkin) are even more typical from Valencia. During the Fallas festival you can find a churos stands on every corner of Valencia. But where to find this yummie when there is no festival? My favorite places 2 eat these tasty sweets: at  Chocolateria Valor  in the city centre or  Buñoleria El Contraste in Ruzafa.

10 Popular Drinks From Valencia You Must Try

If you’ve never visited Valencia before, you’re in for a real treat because Valencia’s drinks and beverage scene is quite impressive. While Valencia is famous for its refreshing horchata and fruity Agua de Valencia cocktail, there are many more delicious drinks to try. Here are the top 10 drinks in Valencia that you cannot miss.

In This Article

1. Horchata de chufa

2. agua de valencia, 3. freshly squeezed orange juice, 4. café bombón, 6. café del tiempo, 7. blanco y negro, 8. utiel-requena wines, 10. craft beers from valencia.

A glass of horchata de chufa

Sweet, refreshing and vegan-friendly, horchata is Valencia’s flagship drink. It can be served in liquid form, as granita, or mixed. While it is mainly associated with hot summer days and Las Fallas , it can be found in specialist horchaterias throughout the year, even during the colder winter months.

Horchata is made from chufa , a tuber that is primarily cultivated in the fields of Alboraya, a village a few kilometers north of Valencia. You might know it as earth almond or tiger nuts (funny, I know).

Horchata is usually accompanied by fartons (yes, seriously), an elongated confectionary glazed with sugar. Fartons were specifically created to be dunked in this delicious milky drink and don’t taste like much by themselves.

A glass of agua de Valencia on a grey table

Agua de Valencia is a delicious pitcher cocktail and the perfect pick-me-up after a long day of work or sightseeing.

But don’t let its innocent name fool you. This cocktail doesn’t contain any water and is rather strong. The recipe calls for sweet Valencian oranges, cava (local sparkling wine), vodka, gin and sugar, resulting in a sweet refreshing drink that is enjoyed by pretty much anyone who gives it a try.

If you are a fan of mimosas, then ordering Agua de Valencia at one of the bars in Valencia is a must-do. Avoid purchasing the bottled stuff, unless you intend it as a souvenir .

A glass of freshly squeezed orange juice on a table with a cloth and three oranges

Valencian oranges are sweet, juicy, have a thin skin and barely any seeds. The locals love to eat them fresh, use them for cooking, and make freshly squeezed orange juice. So, of course, since we are talking about the best drinks in Valencia, the freshly squeezed orange juice couldn’t have missed from this list.

This juice is a popular addition to breakfast in Valencia , often served alongside coffee and pastries or toast. Many cafeterias offer affordable breakfast deals that include all of these tidbits.

However, it’s important to note that Valencianos typically avoid drinking orange juice in the late afternoon, as it is believed it may cause heartburn and even insomnia. So next time you’re visiting Valencia, try to stick with freshly squeezed orange juice for breakfast, to avoid looking like a tourist.

A layered café bombom on a brown table

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in Valencia so when it comes to your daily cup of joe you are spoiled for choice. I suggest you start with café bombón. This delicious hot beverage originated in Valencia and is perfect for when you crave something sweet, creamy, and warm.

Café bombón is made with equal parts sweetened condensed milk and espresso. Because condensed milk is denser than espresso, it sinks to the bottom, creating two distinct layers.

To fully appreciate the beauty of this beverage, café bombón is always served in a small, transparent glass. Before taking a sip, stir with a spoon to gently mix the two layers. This creates a rich and indulgent drink that always makes me think of liquid cake.

Cremaet in a transparent glass

Cremaet is a sweet concoction made with layers of burnt liquor and espresso, flavored with cinnamon, and lemon peel. It’s the perfect way to end pretty much any meal on a sweet note, although traditionally it accompanied the esmorzaret .

Esmorzaret , a beloved and popular tradition in Valencia, is essentially a second breakfast that has been fashionable in the city for a long time. It is similar to the almuerzo people have throughout Spain, but with a local twist and was embraced by Valencianos long before brunch became popular in the city.

Many bars in Valencia offer the traditional esmorzaret, which consists of a bocadillo (a crusty bread sandwich) served with lupins, olives, pickles, or peanuts. This is typically accompanied by a drink and topped off with a cremaet, the ideal sweet ending to this hearty meal.

A coffee in a cup and a glass with ice

While in other parts of the world, you might order a frappe to cool down on a hot summer day, in Valencia, café del tiempo is the drink of choice.

Café del tiempo is simply a hot espresso with a glass of ice on the side, typically containing a large ice cube and a slice of lemon. So simple! No added sugar, no flavorings, no fuss.

Interestingly, the name del tiempo has nothing to do with the weather. Whether it is chilly or scorching hot outside, if you want a coffee with ice, this is how you order it in Valencia. Oh, and you have to pour the coffee over the ice yourself, with a swift wrist motion. However, be warned that this may sound easier than it is.

Blanco y negro (black and white) is a drink, although it can also be savored as a dessert, made with coffee and white ice cream. It is the perfect sweet and refreshing treat to enjoy on a terrace during the summer.

Usually, blanco y negro is prepared using coffee granita, which is essentially espresso that’s initially frozen and then blended, preserving the full strength and flavor of the coffee.

The coffee granita is then topped with a dollop of sweet cream ice cream. If sweet cream is too bland for you, you can also order your blanco y negro with vanilla ice cream or leche merengada ice cream (my favorite!). Absolutely delicious!

A glass and a bottle of wine

The Utiel-Requena wine region is situated about 75 km inland from Valencia and it mainly produces red wines. Although not very well-known outside of Spain, it is actually one of the largest and oldest wine region in the country, with more than 2,700 years of history. So you definitely need to try the local wines when in Valencia.

The native grape variety is called Bobal, which is highly resistant and productive. Wines made from this grape tend to be fruity, with high acidity and low alcohol content, resulting in a refreshing and light-bodied drink. Other red grape varieties such as Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Merlot are also grown in the region and are often mixed with Bobal.

In Valencia, you can find Utiel-Requena wines pretty much anywhere, from supermarkets to restaurants. These wines are often very reasonably priced, of high quality and a great option when dining out.

A glass of mistela wine

Mistela is a sweet liqueur that’s created by mixing concentrated freshly pressed grape juice (or young wine) with wine alcohol that has a minimum alcohol content of 13 degrees. It’s a perfect drink to enjoy either as an aperitif or dessert.

Although mistela retains the grape aroma, it isn’t a fermented drink. Therefore, even though all of its ingredients are made from wine, mistela isn’t considered wine itself.

Valencia is one of the largest producers of mistela in Spain, with a history that dates back thousands of years. Mistela is considered a digestive drink and can be made using white or red grapes, although white mistela is more common in Valencia.

A bottle of La Socarrada beer and peanuts in shell

The craft beer scene in Valencia has been booming in recent years, with a variety of local breweries and taprooms popping up throughout the city. So instead of reaching for a commercial brand, I highly encourage you to try a locally brewed craft beer instead.

One of the most popular Valencian breweries is Tyris. They offer a variety of craft beers, including an award winning brown ale called Paquita Brown and my favorite IPA, Au Yeah! If you’re in the Old Town, make sure you check out their Tyris on Tap bar for a cold beer and snacks.

Other Valencian craft beers worth trying include La Socarrada which is a unique honey and rosemary-infused beer and Er Boquerón, the world’s first beer made with seawater. They are both produced in Xativa, a nice town you can visit on a day trip from Valencia .

If you like unique beer flavors, also try Bounty, made with chocolate nibs and coconut, and Génesis, made with cherry blossoms and rice.

The drinks mentioned above offer a diverse range of options that cater to all tastes and nicely complement the traditional food of Valencia . Local wines, for example, are an excellent match for the city’s seafood and rice-based dishes, such as paella , while tapas are ideally complemented by locally brewed craft beers.

Whether you prefer a refreshing glass of horchata or a sophisticated cocktail, Valencia has a beverage that will take your culinary experience to the next level. So go ahead and treat yourself a little, discover your favorite Valencian drinks and dishes, and enjoy.

On April 25, Auction House Food & Drink Hall, by KO Restaurant Group, opened at 29 Fanning Bridge Road in Fletcher.

KO Restaurant Group’s Sarah and Paul Klaassen and Michael Olbrantz designed Auction House as a two-story eatery and drinkery with five original counter service concepts Auction House Wine Bar (or A.H. Wine Bar), KO Burger, Fish Camp 25, Mercado Cantina and Blue Collar Bourbon.

“You get bored doing the same thing every day but if you have multiple things going on, there’s always some fun you can have,” Sarah Klaassen told Citizen Times . “Today we’re going to have fun with these tacos, tomorrow we’re going to focus on the smash burgers.”

On the ground level, order casual bites like KO Burger’s retro-style griddle burgers, all-beef hotdogs and battered fries, and Fish Camp 25’s fish and chips, hushpuppies and po-boys.

Unwind at Blue Collar Bourbon, a full-service bar pouring cocktails, draft beer and a wide selection of bourbons including premium labels.

On the second floor, diners will find Yucatan-inspired fare from tacos to tortas and a full-service bar specializing in high-end tequila and mezcal.

Auction House Wine Bar’s menu features an extensive list of wines, frosé ― frozen rosé ― and mimosas.

Auction House, named after the specialty auction house that formerly inhabited the historic building, constructed in 1948, offers 6,600 square feet of interior space with ADA-compliant ramps to both level and on-site parking.

A beer garden extends the guest experience with games, ample seating and an outdoor stage for concerts, movie screenings and more.

The first live music performance is scheduled for 6-9 p.m. May 2. Music is planned to occur Thursday-Sunday, weekly.
