15 Best things to do in Durban

My travels in South Africa span more than a decade. I’m therefore extremely well placed to highlight all that’s great and good about South African destinations including Durban from the viewpoint of visitors like you.

When it comes to location, Durban has it made. Firmly positioned on South Africa’s east coast, this port city developed around a string of long and attractive sand beaches lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

The region around Durban has been inhabited for at least 100,000 years. It only reached the attention of Europeans in 1497, when Portuguese golden age explorer Vasco da Gama sighted it on his way to India. It then passed through multiple hands until annexed by Britain in 1844.

Today, Durban is South Africa’s third-largest city. Alongside its beaches, it contains a blend of natural and manmade sights which range from exquisite cuisine to fascinating museums. Come for the sun, sea, and sand, but stay for the culture.

To provide you with a little helping hand, here are my pick of the 15 best things to do in Durban.

1. The Golden Mile

On the Golden Mile in Durban

Durban isn’t the getaway of choice for South Africans for nothing. You won’t need much convincing that the city’s Golden Mile is the best place to head. It stretches out from the Central Business District (CBD) to form several beaches backed by an attractive promenade filled with cafes and restaurants.

Like most of the Golden Mile’s beaches, South Beach is watched over by lifeguards most of the year. It’s also protected by shark nets. Its slightly calmer atmosphere makes it a good choice for families looking to enjoy the sand or water temperatures of 22°C. Neighboring North Beach is best known for its waves, which attract surfers and bodyboarders from right around the world.

2. uShaka Marine World

Loggerhead turtle in uShaka Marine World

When it’s time for a change from the sands of the Golden Mile, head to uShaka Marine World. Although primarily known as a water park, most agree that its slides don’t come anywhere near comparison with its aquaria, which total 4.6 million gallons and contain 10,000 distinct species of sea creature.

Putting rivals to shame, the aquaria at uShaka Marine World incorporate the largest single tank in the southern hemisphere. Its viewing windows run for 500 meters through four different ‘shipwrecks.’ Each offers insight into an alternative marine environment. Species you’re likely to encounter include sharks and manta rays, alongside turtles, seals, and even penguins.

3. Port Natal Maritime Museum

Port Natal Maritime Museum

Just across the bay from uShaka Marine World is the Port Natal Maritime Museum. Maintaining the old name for the city – which was changed in 1835 – the museum has Durban’s elegant harbor as a backdrop. Its exhibitions span hundreds if not thousands of years of seafaring in the region.

The stars of any visit have to be the boats and ships which can be boarded and explored. It’s not just little kids who’ll enjoy pretending to be the captain of the minesweeper SAS Durban or NCS Challenger while discovering the tiny rooms which together made these ships function.

4. Umgeni River Bird Park

Taking a photo of Macaw

Once a water-filled quarry, Umgeni River Bird Park now has tropical flora spanning 3.5 hectares on the opposite bank of the Umgeni River to the city. It provides a home for approximately 800 birds belonging to 200 species, including the only examples of their kind in Africa.

Birds to look out for range from owls and hornbills to vultures and macaws. Many play a part in the daily shows which take place at the outdoor auditorium. Still more can be seen hatching and being raised by the park team, including increasingly rare wattled cranes.

5. The BAT Centre

Nothing to do with flight, the BAT Centre is a community arts project found on Durban’s Victoria Embankment. It consists of a clutch of individual brick buildings containing small independent art galleries, alongside a performance hall, places to grab a bite to eat, and stores selling a mix of traditional and contemporary art from KwaZulu-Natal province.

A not-for-profit center looking to celebrate the artistic heritage of the city, the BAT Centre is without doubt the best place in the city to discover the diversity of arts and crafts on offer.

6. Durban Botanic Gardens

Walking around at Durban Botanic Gardens

Durban Botanic Gardens is the oldest formally laid out botanic gardens in South Africa, with a foundation date of 1849. A mix of local South African plants and exotics from around the world, it boasts specimens from a variety of floral kingdoms.

Among them are orchids, palms, and cycads (ferns). But covering 15 hectares, there’s also a sunken garden established in the English style and displaying a colorful array of flowers, a butterfly habitat garden, and a naturally-fed lake that’s the perfect spot for a picnic on any of Durban’s multitude of sunny days.

7. Mini Town

Mini Town

A knee-high version of the city beyond its perimeter walls, Mini Town is a retro (turning to kitsch but in a good way) attraction close to the beachfront at Snell Parade. Recreating Durban in miniature, Mini Town contains versions of all the city’s main buildings of note.

What makes Mini Town extra special is the attention given to the functioning railway, and its harbor. Complete with its own moving tug and ship, it contains over 200,000 liters of water.

8. KwaMuhle Museum

To my mind, the KwaMuhle Museum is the most important and most interesting of all Durban’s exhibition spaces.

This museum of apartheid, and its forerunner, the ‘Durban system,’ has been sensitively situated in the building once hated by non-white South Africans – the Department of Native Affairs. It was here that the passes which had to be carried by everyone entering the city were issued.

The museum details all this with its collection of documents, photographs, videos and items belonging to ordinary South Africans. Refusing to hide away from the horrors of the apartheid system, KwaMuhle Museum plays a vital role in educating the generations born after the release and election of Nelson Mandela as South Africa’s first black president.

Bunny Chow

One of South Africa’s most ethnically diverse cities, Durban’s population is made up of Zulu people in addition to a significant number with British and Indian descent. Blending their cultures over decades, Durban has a culinary scene unlike any other city in South Africa. And you don’t have to spend big to enjoy it.

The city’s oceanic location means fish is always a good bet, whether it’s deep-fried in the British style or covered in flavorsome spices originating from the Indian subcontinent. For dishes specific to the city, look out for Bunny Chow – a curried mixed vegetable stew traditionally served in a hollowed-out loaf of bread.

10. Moses Mabhida Stadium

Moses Mabhida Stadium

Built for the 2010 FIFA soccer world cup and named after a leading anti-apartheid politician, this stadium in Durban isn’t just for sports fans. As well as hosting soccer, cricket, and rugby union matches, the stadium doubles as a playground for adventure sports lovers.

The arch which spans the 55,000 seater arena incorporates a 550 step ‘adventure walk’ leading to a viewing platform 106 meters above the ground. There’s also a funicular to reach the top for those who don’t fancy the walk. Beyond the views of Durban and the Indian Ocean, the platform provides the perfect spot to watch daredevils fling themselves from the arch on the bungee swing which flings them 220 meters across the pitch.

11. Dick King Statue

Dick King Statue

The Dick King Statue is another remnant of Durban’s past located on Victoria Embankment. A bronze equestrian statue, it honors the actions of Richard Phillip King in raising the alarm over the possibility of the Boer attack on the city in the 1840s.

Riding for 10 days between Durban and Grahamstown, King covered around 125 kilometers a day, whilst so sick some days he couldn’t even ride. Reaching Grahamstown all the same, he was able to mobilize a British force which saved the city from attack and led King to become part of the history of Durban.

12. Durban Natural Science Museum

Durban Natural Science Museum

The grand columned exterior of the Durban Natural Science Museum should be enough to attract most visitors to its doors – part of Durban City Hall. Entering through a wide stone staircase lined with thick red carpeting, the museum’s displays are no less impressive.

Focusing on the living planet, the museum is a treasure-trove of animals stuffed in former years, from birds and mammals to insects and reptiles. Its displays extend as far as ancient Egypt, with the mummy known as Peter Amen, and one of the most complete skeletons of a dodo there is anywhere.

Kings Park Stadium

Know anything about South Africa and you’ll know its people love sports. The city of Durban certainly isn’t any different, making attendance at one of its major sporting events a great way of getting under the skin of the city.

Kings Park Stadium is the home ground of the Sharks rugby union team, with most games in the domestic league taking place during the country’s winter months (June to September). At other times of year, there’s also the chance to catch cricket at Kingsmead Ground, and soccer at Moses Madhiba Stadium.

14. Old Court House Museum

This museum occupies one of the oldest remaining structures in central Durban, with its ironwork veranda and cream-yellow stone windowsills making for an intriguing addition to the surrounding office blocks.

Built in the 1860s, inside visitors will find a collection totaling some 10,000 individual items. Together, they help tell the story of the area and its people through good times and bad. Further interest is provided through the fact that the building was regularly frequented by Mahatma Gandhi while he acted as a lawyer in the city.

15. Phoenix Settlement

Durban’s connections with one of the greatest men of the twentieth century don’t stop with Old Court House Museum. The Phoenix Settlement, a few miles north of the CBD, was bought by Gandhi in 1904. It was here that he began the switch from lawyer to freedom fighter.

The settlement acted as a test bed for a series of ideas, from communal living to the policy of non-violence which would see Gandhi nominated (unsuccessfully) for a Nobel Peace Prize on more than one occasion. The house where Gandhi lived during this time has been fully restored, and can be visited as part of the Inanda Heritage Trail.

The 10 Best Things to Do in Durban, South Africa

durban tourism video

Marc Hoberman / Getty Images

Located on South Africa ’s northeast coast, Durban is the largest city in the KwaZulu-Natal province and a favorite destination for travelers in search of sun, sea and surf. Imbued with an irresistible vacation atmosphere, Durban is known for the idyllic beaches of the Golden Mile, its world-class surf spots and active Indian community. The latter is responsible for the city’s reputation as the curry capital of South Africa, making this a fine destination for foodies as well.

Hit the Beach

Durban is famous for its beaches , both in the city center and the suburbs. Grab a good book and a towel and spend the day working on your tan; or kick things up a notch with an early morning kitesurfing session. uShaka Beach is famous for its sandcastle artists, who create photo-worthy masterpieces for passing tourists. Northern Umdloti Beach is a good bet for families in search of safe swimming; or nature-lovers hoping to catch sight of migrating humpback whales in winter. North Beach is a bodyboarding hotspot. Durban is also convenient for exploring the more secluded beaches of the South Coast.

At almost any time of day or night, you’ll see surfers of all abilities paddling out to backline on Durban’s beaches. This is one of South Africa’s top surf spots - whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned pro. For entry-level waves, head to uShaka Beach and Vetch’s Pier. For the more experienced, the best waves are found north of the Golden Mile at North Beach, Bay of Plenty and Dairy Beach. South of the city center, top surf spots include Ansteys Beach and Cove Rock. Be respectful of other surfers and wait your turn, though - Durban locals are notoriously intolerant of visitors dropping in on their waves.

Learn to Scuba Dive

If you’d rather be under the waves than on them, pay a visit to Calypso Dive & Adventure Centre  on the beachfront. Here, a team of PADI professionals offer try dives at uShaka aquarium or in the ocean as well as full beginner courses. If you’re already certified, continue your education with an Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver or specialty course. Calypso is also known for its tec diving and professional courses. Nearby dive sites include reefs teeming with aquatic life and a number of interesting shipwrecks. The most notable of these is Coopers, a large wreck of unknown origins named after a nearby lighthouse.

Catch a Sharks Game

You can’t spend time in KwaZulu-Natal without seeing the symbol of a shark wearing a black-and-white rugby strip. This is Sharkie, the official mascot of the Sharks rugby union team . Based in Durban, the Sharks represent KwaZulu-Natal in the annual Currie Cup tournament. Their supporters are devoted, and matches are attended by locals from all walks of life. Get tickets to a game at Kings Park Stadium, the Sharks’ home ground, to experience their passion for yourself. Several iconic Springbok players have played for the Sharks either now or in the past, including JP Pietersen, Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira and Patrick Lambie.

Try a Bunny Chow

In the 1800s, British colonialists bought thousands of migrant workers over from India to work on  KwaZulu-Natal’s sugarcane plantations. Many chose to build a home in South Africa, and their descendants still live in Durban today. In fact, the city’s Indian community is so large that Durban is known throughout the country for its curry restaurants . A unique trademark of Indian food in South Africa is the bunny chow, a half loaf of bread that has been hollowed out and filled with curry. You can order bunny chows at countless eateries throughout the city, from top-rated restaurant Mali’s to favorite hole-in-the-wall spot Sunrise Chip n’ Ranch.

Explore the Moses Mabhida Stadium

An icon of the Durban waterfront, Moses Mabhida Stadium is the city’s main venue for athletic and music events. It’s also a thrill-seeker’s paradise offering several adrenalin-fuelled activities - including the Big Rush swing. Mounted 262 feet/80 meters above the ground on the stadium’s graceful arch, the swing is the tallest in the world. You can also climb the arch, admiring magnificent panoramic views of the coast and the city spread out below en route; or you can skip the workout and ride the SkyCar to the top instead. Moses Mabhida also offers stadium tours, either on foot or by Segway.

Indulge in Retail Therapy

Durban is a dream destination for shopaholics , whether you’re looking for authentic craft markets, sprawling malls or upmarket boutiques. Take care of your souvenir shopping at Amphitheatre Flea Market, held every Sunday on the Golden Mile beachfront. Here you’ll find traditional African arts and crafts, ranging from beaded jewelry to wooden sculptures. Of Durban’s many malls, Gateway Theatre of Shopping is probably the most rewarding, with over 400 stores. If your tastes lean more towards boutique art and fashion, plan a day trip to the Valley of a Thousand Hills, an inland region littered with upmarket shopping streets and markets.

Visit uShaka Marine World

Located at the southern end of Durban’s Golden Mile, uShaka Marine World is the city’s top-rated tourist attraction. The vast complex incorporates several different zones, including a reptile house, a rope adventure park and the Village Walk, an open-air shopping and dining destination. The two main attractions, however, are the aquarium and the water park. The former gives you the opportunity to admire South Africa’s diverse marine life up close - including ragged-tooth sharks, African penguins and green turtles. The water park is the ideal choice for a fun family day out, with water slides, splash pools and supertubes.

Have Dinner Overlooking the Bay

Durban is full of excellent restaurants and bars, but if you’re looking for the ultimate romantic date night destination, pick one that overlooks the vast expanse of Durban Bay. Moyo and the Cargo Hold are both sure to impress. Located at the end of uShaka Pier, Moyo offers panoramic views of the glittering nighttime waterfront. Sip craft cocktails while dining on African-inspired cuisine, accompanied by soft music and the sound of the surf crashing against the pier below. Ship-shaped fine dining restaurant the Cargo Hold boasts stunning ocean vistas on one side, and a floor-to-ceiling view into the uShaka shark tank on the other.

Go Swimming With Sharks

For an even closer shark encounter, consider taking a 40-minute drive south of Durban to the tiny coastal town of Umkomaas. Umkomaas is the gateway to Aliwal Shoal, an offshore reef system known as one of the best places in the world to dive with sharks . Several scuba diving centers offer baited shark dives, using chum to attract oceanic blacktip sharks, bull sharks and tiger sharks (in season). Sightings are almost guaranteed, and if you don’t have your scuba license, don’t worry - operators like Aliwal Shoal Scuba offer shark snorkeling and even shark cage diving for those that require a little extra peace of mind.

Valley of a Thousand Hills

Inland from the popular resort area of Umhlanga Rocks lies the Valley of 1,000 Hills , a beautiful region of gently rounded hills sprinkled with scenic viewpoints, Zulu homesteads, and gorges. The hills rise up along the banks of the Umgeni River as it flows into the Indian Ocean from the distant Drakensberg mountains. The old road between Durban and Pietermaritzburg runs along the southern edge of the valley, an area with magnificent views.

After passing Hillcrest and Botha's Hill, it comes to Phe-Zulu, a typical Zulu village where visitors can see traditional dance performances and witness the rituals of witch doctors.

PheZulu Safari Park has an abundance of animals that can be spotted, and a Crocodile and Snake park where visitors can go on a tour by knowledgeable guides. The park also offers accommodations.

Umhlanga Rocks

Umhlanga Rocks (pronounced Umshlanga), 16 kilometers north of Durban, is a popular, upscale resort town. Long golden beaches, interrupted by rocky coast, stretch for 200 kilometers north of Durban to the beautiful Isimangaliso Wetland Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site , containing eight interlinking ecosystems; three major lake systems; and Africa's largest estuarine system, Lake St. Lucia .

In Umhlanga Rocks, water sports enthusiasts will find plenty of things to do. Surfing, deep-sea fishing, whale watching, dolphin viewing, scuba diving, and kiteboarding are some of the aquatic pursuits on offer.

Shopping is also a favorite pastime. The Gateway Theatre of Shopping here is one of the largest in the southern hemisphere. Other attractions in the region include championship golf courses, the KZN Sharks Board, nature reserves, and museums, including the former dwelling of Mahatma Gandhi.

Kwamuhle Museum

At Kwamuhle Museum, find exhibits on life in and around Durban during and leading up to apartheid. Exhibits include photographs of township life and exhibits on contributions made by people responsible for the development of the city.

In the museum's courtyard, The Shadows of the Past sculpture , created by Durban-born artist Ledelle Moe, features three naked migrant workers representing their vulnerability.

The museum is housed in a former Native Affairs Department building, an infamous place responsible for enforcing the apartheid legislation. Today, it's a place of hope, where people who fought against injustice are honored, and diversity is celebrated.

A beautiful old building on Florida Road

Known for well-preserved 100-year-old Edwardian structures, Florida Road, stretching from Sandile Thusi Road to Innes Road, is a happening attraction in Durban. Lined with cafes, boutique stores, galleries, and eateries , the street comes alive after the sun sets with locals and tourists who come to eat, shop, and enjoy Durban's endless summer.

Art lovers can enjoy the African Art Centre, Elizabeth Gordon Gallery, and the Artisan Contemporary Gallery.

This is the best place in the city to taste " Bunny Chow ," a staple Indian-Durban dish made with a loaf of bread hollowed out and filled with savory curry.

Perfect wave at New Pier Beach

New Pier Beach, also known as Dairy Beach, is on Durban's Golden Mile and is a top surf spot in the city thanks to a consistent beach break. Surf conditions are best when there is a southwesterly wind, as it creates an optimal eastern swell angle. The wave can be ridden right and left. Low tide is when to ride, as this is when conditions are best; however, this break can get crowded in summer.

If you want to just chill out, this golden stretch of sand in front of the Durban Beach Restaurants is a good place to plop down a chair or towel and just sunbathe or chat with friends. When in the water here, keep an eye out for jellyfish.

Houses overlooking Inanda Dam

About 20 minutes northwest of Durban is Inanda township, which has a rich historical legacy. This is where Mahatma Gandhi came up with his passive-resistance philosophy while visiting in 1904. Inanda is also where the president of the African National Congress, Dr. John Dube, was born in 1871 and where Nelson Mandela cast his vote in South Africa's first democratic elections in 1994.

To learn more, follow the Inanda Heritage Route through the Inanda Valley, which includes the township. The driving route will take you to the Phoenix Settlement, where Gandhi once lived and where his printing press still resides. It will also take you to one of South Africa's oldest girls schools , the Inanda Seminary, which was founded by American missionaries in 1869. You'll also visit Dube's house , which is now a national monument, and his grave at the Ohlange Institute.

White rhinos in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park

South Africa's oldest game reserve , Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (formerly Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve), is about a two-hour drive from Durban. It can be visited on an organized day trip from Durban, or you can drive yourself. Tours arrange for transportation from the city and offer optional afternoon excursions, including an estuary boat trip, a stop at a wild cat sanctuary, or a visit to Dumazulu Cultural Village.

Established in 1895, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park is one of the only places in KwaZulu-Natal where you have a shot of seeing all the Big Fiv e (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo). The park is also known for its rhino conservation, and both black and white rhino can be observed here. Other animals that call this 96,000-hectare reserve home are wild dog, cheetah, hyena, blue wildebeest, giraffe, and zebra. There are also 300-plus species of birds.

In terms of seeing wildlife, the best months to visit are May through October , which see less rain and allow for less green coverage that can hide animals. That said, during the winter wet season, you'll have baby animals to spot, as well as lush environs.

Blooming flowers along the Midlands Meander

The Midlands Meander is a driving route that starts just an hour's drive from Durban outside Pietermaritzburg. If you have a car, it is a fun day trip from the city. The route takes you through a scenic valley and covers about 80 kilometers.

Besides being a pretty drive, with a green- and gold-hued landscape and a Drakensberg mountain backdrop, the route is known for its stops in small towns with serious handicraft scenes . From weaving to pottery to painting, wood crafts to leather goods and even fresh-made cheese, the route has more than a 150 places to eat and shop along the way.

Activities are also plentiful in this area, and you'll find everything from horseback riding to skydiving and white water rafting experiences. Midmar Dam is a popular place for locals to picnic or barbecue on weekends.

An important industrial center and port, the city owes its cosmopolitan air to its rich ethnic diversity forged from a turbulent history. Clashes between the British traders, who settled here in 1823; the Zulus, on whose tribal land Durban lies; and the Boers, played a part in shaping Durban's character. Contract laborers who hailed from India in 1860 to work on the sugar plantations remained after their contracts expired, making Durban the largest population of Indians in South Africa.

Mahatma Gandhi, who went to South Africa as a lawyer, developed his political views alongside Dr. John Dube, the first president of ANC (African National Congress) in Inanda Valley, 20 minutes north of Durban. It was here that Nelson Mandela cast his first vote in a democratic South Africa in 1994.

Durban offers an array of accommodations, from five-star and family friendly to budget properties, conveniently located close to the city's major attractions. a surfer rides a summer cyclone wave at New Pier beach, Durban.

A local’s guide to Durban, South Africa: 10 top tips

Surfers have long known about the year-round draw of Durban and now a new direct BA flight from London makes its subtropical shores more accessible

Durban has always been a beach town, but the promenade has never been more vibrant, with street performers, sand sculptures, stalls and paddling pools. The front has a growing number of restaurants: the Joint is the latest, with local-style meat dishes and beers plus an upstairs bar with sea views; Afro’s Chicken Shop , in a bright yellow former shipping container, does chicken burgers and tjips (chips); and California Dreaming has a deck for dolphin spotting and serves bunny chow. uShaka Marine World has two good restaurants: Wahooz on the promenade, with free Sunday music sessions, and Cargo Hold , where sharks swim past the tables. Early in the morning, everyone is out paddleboarding, kayaking, cycling, jogging and surfing – there are kit hire shops, and two free open-air gyms.

Main street

Florida Road dining and shopping area.

The Florida Road area north of the centre retains a colonial air, its elegant villas adorned with Victorian lacework balconies, but now there is a great range of restaurants, cafes and bars. Catch a few tunes while sipping cocktails at the Charlatan , try tandoori wraps at Roti & Chai ,or wood-fired pizzas at the Firehouse . The southern end in particular buzzes with activity. CityRoast cafe features Vusi, the baritone opera-singing barista, and shares the space with Falafel Fundi , for typical Durban fusion: chicken schnitzel roti anyone? These are cooked by charismatic chef Saar Ben Hamoo and served with great home-made lemonade. Around the corner is the pairing of Ike’s Books and vinyl shop Khaya Records . The bookshop, in a turn-of-the-century building, was an activist meeting place during the apartheid years and has a vast selection of secondhand books on Africa, modern novels and curios. Watch out for the, plus regular book launches and debates. Next door, Khaya Records is not just a record shop but a venue for gigs and events.

Creative district

Momenti Artisan Gelato

Transformed in recent years into a huge venue for shops and artisanal food producers, Station Drive Precinct also has great vintage clothing at the Vintager , furniture, jewellery, the African Art Centre , and pop-up events. Food is a major element: Parkside serves a great potato and chilli frittata, Khuluma make fresh baked goodies and coffee, and Momenti (pictured) does adventurous gelato and sorbets – try the turmeric, or fresh coconut, black sesame and honeycomb. Station 43 is the venue for gigs and food, and even has its own brewery: That Brewing Co .

Phansi Museum, Durban, South Africa

For an intro to the city, try Justin Perumal’s Wild Routes (prices vary). They are especially strong on arts, from street art and graffiti in Glenwood to the highbrow KZNSA gallery. Another outfit, Beset , does regular free public walks showing visitors the grittier side of the city. Another must-see museum is the Phansi (pictured), whose extraordinary collection of Zulu beadwork, ceramics and crafts is housed in a lovely 19th-century colonial villa in Glenwood that was once the home of Esther Roberts, a campaigner against racial injustice as well as a collector of African arts and crafts. The museum has regular exhibitions and cultural events. Durban Botanic Gardens is an oasis in the city, established in 1849, is Africa’s oldest surviving botanic garden, great for a picnic under the trees or cream scones in its tea garden. It’s also a popular venue for outdoor concerts.

Zulu-style barbecue

A traditional South African bunny chow, Indian curry served in a hollowed out loaf

Bunny chow (half a loaf filled with curry) is Durban’s most famous local speciality: try it at the Britannia Hotel or Cane Cutters in Glenwood. Patels in Yusuf Daddo street does vegetarian bunnies. Less well-known to outsiders is shis a nyama , an informal barbecue where Zulu people celebrate one of the world’s most carnivorous diets. Typically it’s where you go after a night out, to deal with your babalaas – hangover – but evening sessions can mean music and dancing. Much of township life is difficult to access for outsiders, but Max’s Shisa Nyama in Umlazi is a good place to sample it. Run by the Max Mqadi, it has become popular with both locals and tourists. The busy Sunday sessions attract top local DJs. maxslifestyle.mobi

Beachfront stays

Curiocity backpacker hostel

For early morning surfing, there is nothing like staying on the beachfront. At boutique backpacker hostel Curiocity (dorm beds £13) the dorms are clean and cheap (there are private rooms, too) and it does film nights, braais and beach yoga. Also handy for the sand is the retro style Blue Waters Hotel (doubles £51 B&B) with fabulous sea views from most rooms. D’Urban Elephant (doubles from £65) is an elegant, six-room Edwardian-era guesthouse on Berea ridge, full of regional art and found objects. Its garden and pool overlook the harbour and ocean, the backdrop for a cooked breakfast on the veranda. Guests can use the kitchen, though the restaurant strip of Glenwood (Helen Joseph Road) is within walking distance.

Muthi medicine, market, Victoria Street.

I Heart Market is held on the first Saturday of the month on the lawns outside the Moses Mabhida stadium, the World Cup venue whose arch boasts a panoramic view of the city and ocean. The market has local designers, food and drink stalls, crafts, clothing and a whole lot more. Another great spot is Muthi Market on Victoria Street: muthi is traditional medicine and Durban is home to one of Africa’s largest markets. Despite a serious fire this year, the market is an amazing place to wander around, full of unusual sights, smells and strange juxtapositions. Durban has several other interesting markets, and the best tour is with Markets of Warwick .

Bakeries and cafes

Tasty sandwiches from Glenwood Bakery

The Glenwood Bakery is a busy breakfast spot also open in the evenings for pizzas. On the other side of town, Bread the Artisan Bakery in Lilian Ngoyi Road has an interesting range of sourdough. Peter, their baker, is always experimenting with new breads, such as black sage, Egyptian dukka and so on. Antique Café on Churchill Road is exquisitely decorated with Indian saris and antiques. Its courtyard is a lovely spot for breakfast or lunch. The Crazy Korean overlooks the sea just across the Umgeni river, and its irrepressible chef, KJ Lee, has a fantastic selection of Korean food, some cooked at the table. There is a guesthouse attached.

The Chairman

cocktail at the Chairman

A group of young Durban architects have taken a dilapidated building in a rundown part of town and transformed it into something incredible. Huge wooden doors lead to a funky bar area filled with a crazy collection of furniture and artefacts. There’s a popular courtyard out back where customers lounge around on cushions. The cocktail list includes a “voodoo child”, with kiwi fruit and blackcurrant vodka, there’s an extensive whisky menu and they serve great pizza. There’s also an art gallery and live jazz. This is not an area to wander around late at night, but fine by taxi. Another great bar is Lucky Shaker in Umhlanga, north of the city, where a bunch of creative guys make unique cocktails with locally sourced ingredients. 146 Mahatma Gandhi Road, thechairmanlive.com

Catch some music

drumshack durban

The Drumshack hosts weekly community drum jam (£2 entry) at the Castle-on-Main, a 1952-built castle in Hillcrest, 30km west of the city centre, with djembes on sale for those who want to keep drumming after your trip. Also worth catching is the Zakifo music festival in May, a celebration of Indian Ocean music at locations around the city.

Getting there British Airways starts direct flights from Heathrow to Durban three times a week on October 29, from £599 return.

When to go Durban has a sub-tropical climate with mild, sunny winters and hot, humid summers (with most rainfall between October and March). The city is the gateway to KwaZulu-Natal, with its many varied attractions, from the Drankensberg mountains in the west to the wetlands of the Elephant Coast in the north-east.

10 Reasons Why You Should Visit Durban

Durbans beaches are dotted with piers

Durban on the east coast of South Africa has often been overshadowed by its popular sisters, Johannesburg and Cape Town, but this laid back seaside town is slowly making waves. Here are 10 reasons to head east to this rapidly emerging city when visiting South Africa.

Durban’s beaches are dotted with piers

Beautiful beaches

Durban has some of the best beaches in South Africa and unlike some of the more advertised beaches on the west coast that border the frigid Atlantic Ocean, Durban has the warm Indian Ocean and the warm Mozambique Current that make sure the water stays toasty throughout the year. The Golden Mile is a prized stretch of land along Durban’s North Beach that is popular with surfers, fishers, joggers, and offers some of the best beaches in Kwazulu-Natal.

Warm throughout the year

Traditional Indian Dance

Save a buck or two

Durban is not (yet) as popular as South African destinations like economically stimulated Cape Town and Johannesburg, making it a significantly cheaper city to live and holiday in. Food, rent, and entertainment can be much cheaper in this seaside city, making it a great holiday destination where tourists can save a few bucks.

Rivers and mountains

It has everything

Durban has the sea, the valleys, and the mountains. Everyone knows about Durban’s amazing ocean but what people forget is that people can go a few kilometres inland and drive through the scenic midlands or even further into KwaZulu-Natal to see a number of game reserves . Further in on the South Africa/Lesotho border, see the majestic Drakensberg Mountains that even promise snow during a cold front.

It’s the best city in South Africa

Durban has won the city with the best quality of living in South Africa for three years running. The annual international survey by Mercer ranks cities in the world based on quality of living. Durban came ahead of Johannesburg and Cape Town and was placed second after Port Louis, Mauritius as the best city in Africa.

Ushaka Marine World in Durban has the fifth largest aquarium in the world

1. World-class aquarium

Aquarium, Park

2. Shopping galore

Park, Shopping Mall

2. Shopping galore

It’s a quirky place

Durban is a funny place: at the Victoria Street Market , people can buy spices called ‘Mother-in-law hell fire’, a loaf of bread filled with curry is a local delicacy , and if, God forbid, the temperature ever drops below 20° C (68° F), Durbanites will lug out blankets, hot water bottles, and insist they must vaai posie (go home).

Secret sunrise

Cape Town may be famous for its epic sunsets over the ocean, but Durban’s hidden secret is its breathtaking sunrises. Wake up early enough and get to a promenade to watch the sun majestically rise out of the ocean along with a handful of early joggers and surfers. It’s one of Durban’s best kept and most beautiful secrets.

Durban is being recognised as a top holiday destination

It’s up-and-coming

Since the World Cup in 2010, Durban’s possibilities have gradually become more recognised. In 2014, CNN named Durban one of the 10 most underrated cities in the world . It was on The New York Times ‘ 52 places to go in the world in 2015, and in 2016 CNN named Durban one of the 23 cities in the world for the best street food . Besides that, the city has increasingly played host to a number of national and international world-class conferences and concerts that include the United Nations Climate Change Conference, International Aids Conferences, and the World News Media Conference. It’s the new place to watch in South Africa.

It is safe to travel and explore Durban. This is the reassurance to visitors from eThekwini Mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda. This comes as the City continues with its vigorous tourism rebuilding campaign which is supported by increased security visibility at tourism hotspots. Mayor Kaunda said this past long weekend Durban recorded 34 500 visitors, a direct spend of R46 million, GDP contribution of R113 million and approximately 31 percent occupancy rate. Mayor Kaunda welcomed tourists back to the City after the recent civil unrest caused reputational damage to the Durban brand. The City had projected a 50 percent visitor arrival at adjusted lockdown level four if there had been no civil unrest. The occupancy rate between 8 and 17 July was 19 percent – a loss of 31 percent in terms of occupancy rates. The actual economic impact in Durban was a loss of 50 000 visitors, R110 million in direct spend, R280 million in tourism GDP and 600 jobs. To revive the tourism industry, Mayor Kaunda said the Municipality has implemented key interventions to ensure a safe and welcoming environment that will see increased visibility of law enforcements agents at key tourism strategic points and zones. These include the beachfront, airports, the harbour, at local businesses and at shopping malls to mention a few. “We are doing this in collaboration with local community partners and destination stakeholders such as community safety forums as well as urban improvement precincts,” said Mayor Kaunda. As part of restoring investor confidence in eThekwini, action driven collaborations with stakeholders to boost and attract investment is ongoing. The TIA360 eThekwini Tourism Investment Symposium, which was held recently, brought together investment leaders to collectively plan for the sustainable recovery of the sector. Tourism asset owners and business service providers whose business is in distress but sees the potential in their business are encouraged to submit their proposal to be part of the Business Turnaround and Recovery Programme on www.TIA.360 Furthermore, there is enhanced community development and collaborations like the ‘Know Your City’ campaign encouraging local people to explore their own city and become ambassadors thus boosting the sector’s revenue. In addition, eThekwini is strengthening tourism partnerships with global entities for sustained destination training and continued awareness so that Durban remains top of people’s minds. Mayor Kaunda said these efforts seek to reassure visitors and the City’s partners in the business tourism sector that everything is on track and safety remains a priority. “The Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre has major international events lined-up for November and December subject to gathering and travel regulations. The City continues to show positive results as we rebuild. We want to reassure visitors that we are ready to welcome them back to the warmest City,” he said.
