When the Eagles Limped Away With the Patched-Together ‘Live’

Assembled after the band had unofficially broken up, Eagles Live closed out their turbulent initial era in perhaps the only way it could: with more turbulence.

The two-disc set arrived on Nov. 7, 1980, just months after a disastrous appearance at Long Beach, Calif., that would mark the Eagles' final show until the aptly titled Hell Freezes Over reunion in 1994. Things had gotten no better in the interim. The Eagles still owed Elektra another album, and so they set about work on a live set – but without actually working together at all.

Glenn Frey stayed behind in Los Angeles, while Don Henley oversaw post-production sessions in Miami. They had to fly tapes back and forth in order to complete Eagles Live .

Frey, to put it simply, was done. "I knew the Eagles were over about halfway through [1979's] The Long Run album," he told Robert Hilburn in 1982. "I told myself I'd never go through this again. I could give you 30 reasons why, but let me be concise about it: I started the band, I got tired of it and I quit."

Listen to the Eagles Perform 'Seven Bridges Road'

The Eagles' label reportedly agreed to pay a whopping $2 million if they would construct a pair of new songs that could be tacked onto Eagles Live . The offer was flatly rejected. Instead, the Eagles' first-ever live album would include just one previously unreleased tune, a gorgeous a cappella cover of Steve Young's "Seven Bridges Road" that almost cracked the Top 20.

Every one scattered for solo projects, seemingly without even a glance over their collective shoulders. "I'm very proud of what we did," Henley told Hilburn in '82. "We put everything we had into it at the expense of our health, friendships and everything else. But Glenn was right. It was time for it to end. I have no regrets. I wish everyone else in the group well. There are some painful memories, but I'm beginning now to be able to look back and laugh a little."

It had not been the best of times. They'd needed 18 months and five different studios to complete The Long Run . Tensions continued to mount until Glenn Frey and Don Felder almost came to blows during a July 1980 show at Long Beach. In the end, Eagles Live – which included a raucous take on "Life in the Fast Lane" from that same concert stop – didn't begin to live up to its title.

The Eagles were, quite obviously, dead. But this album has also been called the most overdubbed concert recording ever. They patched in songs from separate 1980 performances at the Forum in Los Angeles and at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, completing Eagles Live with additional music from 1976. That was not only a different time but also a different lineup, since Timothy B. Schmit had not yet joined.

It seemed as if the Eagles just wanted to get this over with. "We made it," a dejected Frey would later muse about his band, "and it ate us." The liner notes told the tale. Five different lawyers were thanked. And at the end, the Eagles could only say: “Thank you, and good night.”

Flashback: The Eagles Play ‘All Night Long’ at Final Show Before 1980 Split

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Forty years ago this month, the Eagles wrapped up their 1980 tour with a show at the Long Beach Arena where they got into such a nasty before showtime that it spilled out onto the stage. The gig ended with Joe Walsh ‘s “All Night Long,” which you can hear right here. It was the last time that they played together until the start of the Hell Freezes Over tour 14 years later.

The Long Beach concert was the culmination of a long world tour in support of The Long Run , an album that took 18 agonizing months to complete. The band was fried by this point and tensions were running very high. Making matters worse, guitarist Don Felder objected to the band’s plan to use the Long Beach show as a fundraising event for California senator Alan Cranston. Felder was initially cordial when he met the senator’s wife, Norma Cranston, backstage and said, “Nice to meet you.” But when she walked away, he couldn’t resist muttering, “I guess.”

Glenn Frey heard this and they got into a heated fight with him shortly before the show began. “We walked onstage, and he came over while we were playing ‘The Best of My Love’ and said: ‘Fuck you. I’m gonna kick your ass when we get off the stage,'” Felder wrote in his 2008 memoir Heaven and Hell: My Life in the Eagles . “Neither of us really wanted to be there that night, and for me it was one gig too many.”

“As the night progressed, we both grew angrier and began hissing at each other under our breath,” he continues. “The sound technicians feared the audience might hear our outbursts, so they lowered Glenn’s microphone until he had to sing. He approached me after every song to rant, rave, curse — and let me know how many songs remained before our fight.”

After the gig, Felder smashed an acoustic guitar to pieces against a concrete column in full view of Frey and the Cranstons. “Within a few days, I’d cooled down,” Felder wrote. “The phone rang. It was our producer, Bill Szymczyk. ‘What’s the schedule for the band?’ I asked. A small silence fell. ‘There is no band at this time,’ he said. It was 1980, and the Eagles were history.”

The Eagles reformed in 1994, but old tensions with Felder remained, and he left the band in 2001. They’ve communicated only through lawyers and nasty comments in the press since that time. Senator Cranston, meanwhile, defeated his Republican opponent in the 1980 election by an overwhelming margin of 1.7 million votes. Whatever money he generated from the concert that night, he surely could have done without. But he does get to go down in history as the guy who inadvertently broke up the Eagles.

How the Eagles Ground to a Halt With ‘Eagles Live’

The Eagles were one of the most popular musical acts in the world in the 1970s, but they ground to a halt in the first year of the new decade of the 1980s with a disjointed, piecemeal album that stands as an appropriate testament to the band's inner dysfunction. The rock and country icons released Eagles Live on Nov. 7, 1980 — a project that found them not only unable to work together in the same room, but was actually completed on different coasts.

The group had essentially ground to a halt after releasing their sixth studio album, The Long Run , in September of 1979. The band members struggled to follow up the massive success of Hotel California during those sessions, which were hampered by drugs and internal strife, and while the album placed hits including "I Can't Tell You Why," "In the City," "Those Shoes" and "Heartache Tonight," it was wildly uneven and ultimately considered a disappointment.

The tour that followed was even more fractious, culminating in a show on July 31, 1980, at a fundraiser for Senator Alan Cranston's campaign. Singer-guitarist Glenn Frey and lead guitarist Don Felder nearly came to blows backstage after exchanging harsh words on stage in front of the audience, with Frey famously threatening, "Only three more songs until I kick your ass, pal."

That marked the end of the classic-era Eagles, but the group still contractually owed Elektra/Asylum another album, so they decided to cull a double live album out of existing tapes from various shows recorded over the history of the band.

Bill Szymczyk produced Eagles Live , and he was forced to referee between Frey and singer-drummer Don Henley , whose partnership had disintegrated to the point that Frey worked in Los Angeles while Henley worked in Miami to produce the overdubs to complete the live tapes where necessary. The live tapes ranged from 1976 to the band's most recent gigs in 1980, encompassing different lineups and including two different hits from two different singer-bassists: Randy Meisner's performance of "Take It to the Limit" was recorded at the Forum in Los Angeles in 1976, while Timothy B. Schmit's take on "I Can't Tell You Why" was recorded in Santa Monica, Calif., in July of 1980.

"I had my assistant in Los Angeles with Glenn, and I had the rest of the band fly to Miami," Szymczyk recalled (quote via Ultimate Classic Rock ). "We were fixing three-part harmonies courtesy of Federal Express."

The Eagles released just one single from Eagles Live in the form of "Seven Bridges Road," a Steve Young cover that had featured prominently in their live shows since their earliest days. The album featured a laundry list of their greatest hits, but due to extensive overdubs, it doesn't stand as a true "live" album.

Nonetheless, "Seven Bridges Road" peaked at No. 21 on Billboard 's Hot 100, and Eagles Live reached No. 6 on the Billboard U.S. 200. The album served as a stopgap for the individual members of the Eagles to record solo projects: Henley would release his debut solo album, I Can't Stand Still , in 1982, scoring a hit with "Dirty Laundry," and Frey also released his debut solo album, No Fun Aloud , in 1982, hitting with "Party Town."

Walsh, Felder and Schmit would follow with their own solo projects, and the Eagles would not work together again until their unexpected reunion for the Hell Freezes Over Tour in 1994. That tour followed a  brief reunion  for the video for  Travis Tritt 's version of "Take It Easy" in 1994, which served as the catalyst for their decision to reunite as a band. They have toured and recorded off and on ever since in various lineups and are currently on the road for their farewell The Long Goodbye Tour .

The eagles announce “the long goodbye” – the band’s final tour.

"The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe; keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds. Credit and thanks go to our longtime management team, our dedicated road crew, and our exceptional backup musicians for providing skilled and steadfast support, throughout these many years. We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful. Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle. The official farewell tour is currently in the planning stages. We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round.  So, scheduling information will be released as dates are set. The difficulties of booking venues for multiple nights may require us to return to certain cities, depending on demand.  But, we hope to see as many of you as we can, before we finish up. Most importantly, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embracing this band and its music. At the end of the day, you are the reason we have been able to carry on for over five decades. This is our swan song, but the music goes on and on.”

With love and gratitude, The Eagles

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.

We did the tour with Anna her knowledge and understanding of the History surrounding the metro brought the tour alive. Well done Anna!
