European Tour purse payout percentages and distribution

european golf tour prize money

The DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) has a standard formula for payout percentages and distribution its purse and prize money for almost every event. If there's a cut where 65 or more players make the final round or rounds of the tournament, there's standard table of payout percentages and distribution.

The winner of a DP World Tour event gets 17 percent of the purse. Typically, the second place player gets 11 percent of the total purse. Then it goes on like that, all the way down to 65th place, which gets 0.24 percent of the total purse.

There are a few situations where the European Tour doesn't follow its standard purse payout and distribution formula:

  • If the field has no cut, then the winner still gets 17 percent, but the money that would typically be paid out all the way to 65th place is redistributed to the field, giving them more money
  • If the field has a cut and more than 65 players make the weekend -- regardless if there's a secondary cut or not -- the European Tour divides the purse differently to pay out to players who made the cut

European tour offers boost in prize money, new minimum pay

  • Associated Press

The European tour will offer $150,000 against players' earnings and pay $1,500 to other players if they miss the cut as part of a new schedule announced Thursday that boosts prize money and returns to Australia and parts of Asia.

The tour said prize money would be $144.2 million, not including the four majors and the World Golf Championship in Texas.

The four Rolex Series events -- Abu Dhabi, Dubai, the Scottish Open and BMW PGA Championship -- get $1 million increases to $9 million, with the season-ending DP World Tour Championship having a $10 million purse.

The tour also said $6 million from a bonus pool would be distributed among the leading eight players in the DP World Tour rankings at the end of the year.

The changes reflect alliances Europe has established with the PGA Tour and tours in South Africa and Australia amid new competition from Saudi-funded LIV Golf.

Most significant is an "Earnings Assurance Program" that provides $150,000 to full members that count against tournament earnings. It is similar to what the PGA Tour announced for this season, with a few changes.

The U.S. tour is offering $500,000 up front for rookies and players who earned their card back from the Korn Ferry Tour. Everyone else will be paid the difference if they don't earn $500,000 in the season.

The European tour is offering $20,000 at the start of the season for rookies, Challenge Tour graduates and those who make it through qualifying school. Everyone else will get paid the difference if the don't earn $150,000 at the end of the season.

"For us to be able to offer our members record prize funds and enhanced earning opportunities is massive, particularly when global economies are still feeling the effects of the pandemic and with the new challenge of rising inflation significantly putting pressure on costs in all facets of our business," said Keith Pelley, the chief executive of the European tour.

He said the overall prize fund is some $50 million more than two years ago.

The new season begins Nov. 24-27 -- one week after the current season ends -- with consecutive weeks of co-sanctioned events in South Africa and Australia. The Australian PGA Championship is the same week as the Joburg Open, while the Australian Open is the same week as the South African Open.

It will be the first time the Australian Open is co-sanctioned by Europe, while the Australian PGA was on the European schedule from 2015 through 2019. Neither event has been held since 2019 because of the pandemic.

Also new to the European tour -- officially the DP World Tour because of its umbrella sponsorship -- are tournaments in Singapore, Japan, Thailand and Korea.

That puts the 39 tournaments in 26 countries on five continents.

The new year starts with the Hero Cup, patterned after the former Seve Trophy to give European tour members a taste of the Ryder Cup format.

The Italian Open will be May 4-7, significant because it is at Marco Simone outside Rome, which hosts the Ryder Cup at the end of September. It's the same week as the Wells Fargo Championship on the PGA Tour, an elevated event worth $20 million, which would make it difficult for Americans -- along with American-based Europeans -- to play.

Missing from the schedule is a Spanish stop at Valderrama, which is likely to be used by LIV Golf next year.

The European tour also has a three-week break after the British Open, a break Pelley said was sought by players.

Ryder Cup qualifying ends Sept. 3 at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland. After that, players have the Irish Open, BMW PGA Championship, the French Open and then the Ryder Cup.

European Tour prize fund to double in latest cash infusion to pro game

Matt Fitzpatrick at the 2020 DP World Tour Championship.

Prize money isn’t just growing on the European Tour.

It’s doubling.

Under a new partnership with UAE-based logistics company DP World, the European Tour — which will be rebranded the DP World Tour — will increase its overall purse money in 2022 to $200 million, or roughly twice as much as players vied for in 2021, with a minimum purse of $2 million for each event.

In the Tuesday announcement, the tour said it would have at least 47 events in 27 different countries next year, including new tournaments in the UAE, Japan, South Africa and Belgium. The season-ending DP World Tour Championship will become the first regular European Tour event to have a purse north of $10 million.

The new partnership also will include increased investment in and bigger purses on the Challenge Tour, the European Tour’s development circuit. As part of that initiative, the top five finishers on the season-end rankings will have their travel and expenses covered during the ensuing season on the DP World Tour.

10 burning questions about Greg Norman’s mysterious new golf league

“The entire ecosystem of our Tour will be strengthened because of this hugely significant deal,” European Tour commissioner Keith Pelley said in a statement.

The cash infusion comes amidst an arms race that is raging between the professional golf tours, driven by threats of rival circuits baiting away the game’s best players with huge guaranteed paydays. Last month, Greg Norman was named CEO of Saudi-backed LIV Golf Investments , which announced a $200 million investment in the Asian Tour — and which is reportedly also on the verge of announcing plans for an alternative, big-money global tour. Organizers of yet another would-be tour, the Premier Golf League, also are still hopeful their circuit will become a reality , with cooperation from the PGA Tour.

All of this activity comes just months after the PGA and European tours announced a strategic alliance . Under that partnership, three tournaments in 2022 will be co-sanctioned by the two tours: the Genesis Scottish Open, the Barbasol Championship and the Barracuda Championship.

‘This is only the beginning’: Greg Norman to helm Saudi-funded golf investment group, reveals plans

“I’ve said before that our respective Tours are positioned to grow — together — over the next 10 years faster than we ever have at any point in our existence, and today’s announcement is another point of proof in those efforts,” PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement.

Monahan didn’t say if the deal was a tactic to drive off any would-be rivals, but in a Tuesday call with reporters Pelley was asked about the looming Saudi-funded league. “Today is about the DP World Tour,” he said, according to Scottish golf writer Michael McEwan . “I won’t distract by speaking on any other subjects but … next week at the DP World Tour Championship, we will have the ability to have that conversation.”

In a time of great uncertainty in professional golf, one thing’s for sure: It’s never been a more lucrative time to be an elite tour professional.

It’s team time on the PGA Tour, where, after two weeks of the top stars playing against each other in massive events, there is a brief respite for a week to play in a different format for four days in a much more relaxed atmosphere. Not that they aren’t attempting to bring home the hardware at the Zurich Classic, but the last two weeks were spent grinding at a major championship and a signature event.

This week at TPC Louisiana, however, there are some bigger names in the field than usual, with five of the top 15 players in the world in action. They’re all competing for an $8.9 million overall purse and the winners will both take home $1.286 million.
