Things to Know Before You Cruise

Upgrade Or Not? Msc Fantastica Experience

As someone who loves the freedom of the open ocean, the thought of a cruise vacation always excites me. However, with so many package options available, it can be overwhelming to decide which one is right for my budget and preferences.

That’s why I wanted to share my experience and expertise on the MSC cruise line’s Bella and Fantastica packages. Choosing between Bella and Fantastica is like deciding between a basic economy flight ticket and a premium economy one. They both get you to the same destination, but the experience is vastly different.

So, if you’re considering an MSC cruise, it’s important to understand the differences between these packages, including cabin locations, dining options, and additional perks, to decide if upgrading to Fantastica is worth the extra cost. Let’s dive in and explore the options.

  • MSC offers different ‘Experiences’ when booking a cruise: Bella, Fantastica, and Aurea.
  • Upgrading from Bella to Fantastica includes perks such as better cabin location, choice of dinner sitting, free breakfast in your cabin, and a discount on a specialty restaurant package.
  • The cost of the Fantastica upgrade is incorporated into the fare, so it’s not free, and the upgrade price varies depending on the cruise date and itinerary.
  • Upgrading to Fantastica is worth it if cabin location and dining options matter to you, but booking Bella is a better option if you’re not concerned about those things.

Cruise Package Options

As a cruise enthusiast, I know that when it comes to booking an MSC cruise, choosing between the Bella and Fantastica packages can be overwhelming. Both packages offer great perks, but it’s important to consider the benefits of each and decide which option is best for your needs.

The Bella package is ideal for those who are looking for a basic cruise experience. It’s perfect for those who don’t mind where their cabin is located and prefer to eat in the buffet restaurant.

On the other hand, the Fantastica package is an upgrade that comes with additional perks such as better cabin location and dining options. It offers more flexibility and personalization, but it comes at an extra cost.

When deciding between the two, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons and consider your personal experience and preferences.

Bella vs Fantastica

Personally, I find the benefits of choosing the Fantastica package over the Bella package to be worth the additional cost. The ability to choose my own cabin and location, as well as request my preferred dinner sitting, adds a level of customization to my cruise experience. Additionally, the 20% discount on a specialty restaurant pre-paid package and free breakfast in my cabin with delivery are added perks that make the upgrade worthwhile.

  • More choice in cabin location and dinner sitting
  • 20% discount on specialty restaurant pre-paid package
  • Free breakfast in cabin with delivery
  • Additional cost
  • The free cruise change perk is only useful if something happens to cause you to move your cruise

Based on my personal experience, I highly recommend upgrading to the Fantastica package if cabin location and dining options matter to you. However, if you’re not concerned with those factors and prefer to eat in the buffet restaurant, booking Bella may be a better option. Ultimately, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons and choose the package that aligns with your individual preferences and priorities.

Location and Cabin Options

When I picture myself on a cruise, the first thing that comes to mind is the location and cabin options available to me. As a seasoned cruiser, I know that the location of my cabin can make a significant difference in the enjoyment of my trip.

That’s why the MSC Fantastica Experience is worth considering if you’re looking for better options in terms of cabin location. One of the mid-ship benefits of upgrading to the Fantastica package is the chance to choose your own cabin and location.

Fantastica cabins are located in the best mid-ship positions, which can be advantageous for those who are prone to seasickness or prefer a quieter location. Additionally, being able to choose your cabin location means you can select a room that is closer to the amenities you prefer, such as the dining room, pool, or entertainment areas.

Room preferences are critical when it comes to having a comfortable and enjoyable cruise experience, and upgrading to the Fantastica package can make all the difference.

Dining Options

Exploring dining options on a cruise is one of my favorite pastimes, and MSC offers a variety of choices for guests. With the Fantastica package, guests can enjoy a 20% discount on a specialty restaurant pre-paid package, which allows them to indulge in delicious cuisine from all around the world. From Italian to Japanese, there is something for everyone.

Additionally, the in-room breakfast option is a great perk for those who prefer a leisurely morning in their cabin. For those who enjoy the main dining room experience, the Fantastica package also allows guests to request their preferred dinner sitting. This can be a great advantage for those who prefer an earlier or later dining time. However, it’s important to note that the Bella package does not allow for this option.

Overall, the dining options with the Fantastica package provide a great way to indulge in delicious cuisine and enjoy a relaxing morning in the comfort of your cabin.

Cost of Upgrade

I find it important to consider the cost of the cabin upgrade when booking an MSC cruise. The Fantastica upgrade may come with additional perks such as better cabin location and dining options, but it also comes with a price tag that varies depending on the cruise date and itinerary.

While the upgrade generally costs around £50-100 ($60-120) per person, it’s worth noting that the cost is incorporated into the fare, so it’s not actually free. However, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons and determine the value for money.

If cabin location and dining options are a priority, then upgrading to Fantastica is definitely worth it. The free breakfast in your room, speciality restaurant package discount, and free cruise change are additional perks that may add value to the upgrade.

On the other hand, if you’re not concerned with cabin location and prefer to eat in the buffet restaurant, booking Bella may be a better option for you. Ultimately, it all comes down to personal preference and budget.

Perks of Fantastica

Personally, I think the additional perks that come with the mid-tier package on MSC cruises are like the cherry on top of a sundae, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the already fantastic experience.

One of my favorite perks is the breakfast delivery to your cabin, which is a great way to start the day without having to rush to the main dining room. It’s a relaxing way to enjoy your breakfast while taking in the view from your balcony.

The free cruise change perk is also a nice addition, although it’s not something you’ll use very often. It’s always good to have the peace of mind knowing that you have the option to change your plans if something unexpected comes up.

For solo travelers, I think the Fantastica package is definitely worth it. The opportunity to choose your cabin location and preferred dining sitting can make a big difference in your overall experience. It’s also nice to have the 20% discount on the specialty restaurant pre-paid package, which can be a great way to treat yourself to a special meal without breaking the bank.

Overall, I’d say that the extra cost of upgrading to Fantastica is worth it for the added perks and flexibility.

Drink Packages

When considering my options for an MSC cruise, I always make sure to check out the different drink packages available. MSC offers a variety of drink packages, ranging from a simple water and soft drink package to a premium all-inclusive package that includes alcoholic beverages.

The cost of the drink packages varies depending on the length of the cruise and the package selected, but they can be a great way to save money on drinks during the trip. One of the benefits of purchasing a drink package is that it allows you to budget for your drinks ahead of time.

Without a drink package, the cost of drinks can add up quickly and become expensive. Additionally, the premium all-inclusive package includes not only alcoholic beverages but also specialty coffee, bottled water, and other non-alcoholic beverages, making it a great value for those who plan on drinking frequently during the cruise.

When comparing the cost of the drink packages to the cost of purchasing drinks individually, it’s clear that the packages can save you money in the long run.

Expert Opinion and Resources

According to the founder of Cruise Tips, having access to expert opinion and resources can significantly improve the planning process for an MSC cruise. Mike Schimdt, who has been working in the cruise industry since 2006 and has taken over 20 cruises, possesses a wealth of knowledge and experience that can help passengers make informed decisions about their trip.

Apart from Cruise Tips, there are several other resources available to those planning an MSC cruise. For instance, the MSC Voyagers Club loyalty program allows passengers to earn points towards rewards for future cruises, as well as receive exclusive benefits such as priority boarding and discounts on onboard services.

It’s also essential to compare MSC’s offerings with those of other cruise lines to ensure that you’re getting the best value for your money. By utilizing expert opinions and resources, you can make the most of your MSC cruise experience and secure the best possible deal.

What is the cancellation policy for MSC cruises and how does it differ for Bella and Fantastica packages?

I’ve looked into the cancellation policy for MSC Cruises and found that it differs between Bella and Fantastica packages. Upgrading to Fantastica offers more flexibility with cancellations, allowing for a full refund up to 15 days before departure.

Can guests bring their own alcohol onboard MSC cruises or is it strictly prohibited?

BYOB Allowed? Unfortunately, MSC has a strict alcohol policy and does not allow guests to bring their own alcohol onboard. However, drink packages are available for purchase.

Are there any restrictions on the loyalty points earned through the MSC Voyagers Club program?

I’ve researched and found no restrictions on the loyalty points earned through MSC Voyagers Club Program. Upgrading to the Fantastica Experience offers more perks, such as better cabin location and dining options, but it’s up to personal preference.

What are some of the additional benefits included in the Aurea package compared to Fantastica?

The MSC Aurea package offers additional benefits compared to the Fantastica package, including access to the Aurea Spa, unlimited drinks, and priority boarding. It’s worth upgrading if you value these perks.

How does the quality of the food and dining experience compare between the main dining room, buffet, and specialty restaurants on MSC cruises?

In my experience, the food quality in the main dining room and specialty restaurants on MSC cruises is generally good. The buffet can be hit or miss, but offers a wide variety of options. Dining experiences vary based on personal preference.

Fantastica drink package

Cool Cruiser

We've decided to purchase the all inclusive restaurant and drink package. What happens to the 12 drink vouchers that are included in the Fantastica experience?

- Can you pass them on to someone else?

- Are these actual paper vouchers or are they virtual vouchers loaded on your cruise card?

I will be on the Seaside in a few weeks and would love to know this as well

The meal time beverage plan offers beer , wine and sodas during posted lunch and dinner hours. So if you would prefer a cocktail instead , you can use the drink voucher.

You would use the other drink vouchers in the evening or during non meal hours.

mreic082

You still get the vouchers, but can pass them along if you choose. [emoji846]

They are paper vouchers. We use ours up fast, and wish they still had the 18 voucher package

Safe sailing

Slightly off topic...but does anyone know if the vouchers can be used for gelato? It used to say in the description you could, however now there is no mention of it.

The OP is getting the all-inclusive drinks package - not the mealtime one that is sometimes offered as a promotion. (The mention of 'Fantastica package' in the title is, presumably, a reference to the 12 drinks vouchers which come with a Fantastica cabin), so they won't have any use for the vouchers.

To answer the question - I don't see any problem in passing them on to someone else - the voucher numbers aren't registered against your cruise account, so anyone can use them.

Carribean Cruiser George

You can use your drink coupons for gelato on seaside at the pool bars. If you have kids staying in your cabin they will get 12 non alcohol vouchers each which can also be used for gelato, large or small.

The drinks package they're getting will also cover gelato. The point is the OP will have no need for the included vouchers and wants to know if they can be given to someone else to use.

Yes someone else can use them. On our last MSC cruise a gentleman who didn’t want/need his gave the booklet to us when we sat beside him at the Safety Drill.

SeaShark

Paper vouchers.

Can be given to others.

Can also be kept and used on a future cruise where you might not have the drink package.

suzyed

Yes they can.

I'm confused with this now!

Weve just booked a cheapie 5 night cruise from Venice to Genoa in October that came with the "All Inclusive bar and restaurant" package.

Not that I'm gutsy and want to get my "moneys worth", this talk of vouchers is a tad confusing!

Ive just copied the details of what it says below...

ALL-INCLUSIVE RESTAURANT AND BAR DRINK PACKAGE ADULT

Drink all you want, where you want, in total freedom and with a light heart!

Unlimited spirit s (Premium brands are excluded), liqueurs, aperitifs, wide selection of cocktails, wines by the glass (our selection of white, red and rosé wine), beer, sodas, fruit juices, mineral water, espresso, cappuccino and other classic hot drinks, and takeaway ice cream in a cone or cup. The drinks included in the package can be consumed in all bars, self-service buffet and restaurants, including the speciality restaurants. The following items are not included in this offer: tobacco, champagne, bottles of wine and sparkling wine, premium spirit brands, drinks from the minibar and water provided in your cabin, souvenir glasses and food served in specialty bars and restaurants. Other excluded items are detailed in the onboard Bar List, indicated with an asterisk. TERMS & CONDITIONS: The package is for personal use only and valid for one order at a time. The ID card is non-transferrable. Abusing the terms of the all-inclusive package may cause the service to be withdrawn and the remaining days not to be refunded. The price of the package applies to each day of the cruise except for the day of disembarkation; the package cannot be purchased on daily basis. Once activated on board, the package cannot be interrupted and refunded. The package must be booked by all guests occupying the same cabin, or just travelling together and wishing to eat at the same table, including minors who must book the Child version of the package. The package is not obligatory for infants under 3 years old (i.e. who have not yet reached their 3rd birthday). The package is not available for charter cruises and for large groups (over 250 persons on the Lirica class vessels, over 350 persons on the Musica class vessels and over 500 persons on the Fantasia class vessels). The package is not available for cruises 1-3 night; the minimum number of night is FOUR (4).

Ive underlined the important part! So I'm limited to 12 drinks with a voucher?

Also... the mention of ice cream / gelato. ...... in respect of this package is this what they refer?

The all-inclusive has nothing to do with the 12 vouchers, which currently are included with a Fantastica booking in the US. You don't get vouchers with the all-inclusive. There will be a code on your cruisecard (431) indicating that you have the package so the crew will know that you have it. Gelato is included in your package. Everything on the menus without asterisks is covered and you can order when you like, as often as you like.

Thank you beamafar. I was hoping and thought that was the case and did wonder if these vouchers may have been for US based cruises.

Just need to look online to see if I can see a current menu so I can see first hand what is included and not “premium”. Annoyingly I prefer to drink cider - but fairly sure no ciders are included.

Thanks again for your help.

Cider is only available in bottles, which are not covered, sorry!

Here's a link to the menu from last June - it won't be much different, if at all, when you sail. Just right-click on any of the pics if they're not clear and open them in another tab for zooming. From post #70:

https://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2511337&page=4

That's a comprehensive list. Not all the items will be available at all the bars as some are smaller and carry less stock and some specialise, for instance, the wine bar.

You haven't mentioned what ship you're booked on.

Thanks again for your help. The menus are quite odd in that some of the cheaper items are not included and some more expensive are. I had been told there are lots of bottled beers to chose from but those menus seem to indicate it’s only one draught beer?

The ship is the Poesia. From the photos, it looked nice. I have no idea on the standards set and with a the price we paid, I’m not expecting the ritz! I know I won’t starve and the drink selection is large enough that i’ll be fine.

It’s a long way off still..... and luckily have another cruise to look forward to in 3 weeks from Singapore. Happy days!

We have never tried MSC but happy to do so, we always like having the drink packages. Are these offers usually broad based around a lot of TAs or do you need to book direct? I haven’t noticed them in my brief searches on general sites.

Sent from my iPad using Forums

I booked mine direct with MSC but this “all bars and restaurants” all inclusive package came free with the booking I made. I was aware of it though through a TA email I received. I was in the process of booking direct, but they kept moving goalposts and adding costs they’d not included when I rang to place a booking. It turned out booking direct with MSC worked out cheaper and booking our own flights and hotels.

I do think where you are booking from makes a significant difference.

The draught beer is Heineken, though there may be others in the Zebra bar such as Newcastle Brown Ale and Murphy's Red. These were available in the equivalent bar on Poesia's sister ship, Magnifica and in the wine & beer bar on another Musica class ship, Orchestra. I've also seen Stella Artois on tap on at least one of MSC's ships.

The only bottled beer included in the package is Heineken.

It does seem odd that the drinks package doesn't cover items according to the price.

The offers don't come from the TAs. They're part of MSC promotions. The All-Inclusive drinks package is often offered on Fantastica bookings in the UK and Ireland.

I don’t mind Heineken but definitely prefer Stella so will be happy it’s available. Cider would have been preferred and would probably have been €4.50 a pint..... so instead I’ll have to have two €7.50 cocktails! lol

Actually I have thought of a question to ask... it’s one which would seems a strange one but is because I know some cruise lines don’t understand EU VAT.

VAT is chargeable on purchases. If your cruise on the Med leaves EU waters and docks in a non EU country, the whole cruise will not be VAT chargeable apart from in port of EU countries. If it doesn’t leave EU waters then the whole cruise is chargeable at the originating port nations rate.... apart from when in port of another country. Easy really! Lol

If you buy a drinks package on board, you will be charged VAT on this purchase price. If you’ve already paid.... or in my case, comes free as park of the package, there should be no tax when you get a drink from the bar because the purchase price is €0.00 - and (depending on the country) your 10%, 20%, 21%, 24% tax multiplied by 0 wil not break the bank!

18 months ago, I was on Carnival Vista. I was fortunate. I wasn’t charged tax on my “free drinks”. However cruises before and after (And I understand NCL has followed this lead) and made up a new tax called “what it would have cost you”.

So for Italy, if you got your free all included nothing more to worry about €10 drink (the paying customers charge), they whacked another €2.10 to the bill of each drink.

I can only assume this little ruse is a nice little earner, but I can’t help think it’s fraud. It’s at best taking money they are not entitled to.

There was lots more beside this they were up to... but just to concentrate on my specific question.....

Do MSC try to tax you on your all inclusive drinks obtained that have a value of €0 because they’ve already been paid for?

Hopefully just the domain of Carnival (and NCL if what I read is true.)

No tax is ever added on. There have been reports on here that a Spanish tax is added if you purchase something onboard when in Spanish waters, but I've never experienced this and I've sailed numerous times in the region.

Ok thank you. The fact they charge in Euro (it would seem) I am assuming they do understand how VAT works.

For what it’s worth, it certainly is Spain that kicked this off. The rules of engagement are as described above, so MSC would be duty bound to collect the VAT tax.... but not the made up Carnival one “what it would have cost you” tax.

I’m relieved to hear they understand EU tax laws... unlike some others... though maybe they understand them only too well !!!

Thanks for that, will try there website and see if the promotion is available to us. We are looking for cruises in late sep thru oct in the med so could work. Which location did u book thru?

MSC Cruises drink packages: Prices, inclusions and how to save money on onboard beverages

Gwen Pratesi

A sailaway from port doesn't seem quite as celebratory without a glass of Champagne or cocktail in hand. But if you don't have a drink package for your cruise , ordering these sailaway glasses of bubbly every day — and a glass of wine at lunch and dinner — can add up quickly during a weeklong vacation.

If you're sailing with MSC Cruises , the line offers five options for all-inclusive drink packages, with two for nonalcoholic beverages. If you know you'll be imbibing daily, it might be worth purchasing a drink package rather than buying cocktails a la carte. Also, bottled mineral water, soft drinks, specialty coffees and soft-serve ice cream on some ships (gasp!) are not included in your cruise fare, so you'll have to factor in the additional cost of those beverages — and the beloved frozen treat — along with any alcohol you plan to consume.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

We've broken down the list of MSC Cruises' drink packages to explore which refreshments are (or are not) included and the cost per person, per day. We've also answered the most frequently asked questions to help you determine whether or not a drink package will save you money on your next cruise.

What's included in MSC Cruises' drink packages?

fantastica package msc cruises

Here are the details of MSC Cruises' five drink packages. If one passenger books a drink package, all guests traveling together in the same cabin and dining at the same table must also book a package. Beverage packages are not transferable, and you cannot use them to buy drinks for friends.

None of the drink packages include items purchased at the signature venues, which include Venchi 1878 (chocolate, coffee and gelato), Lavazza (coffee), Jean Philippe (chocolate, coffee, crepes and gelato), Starship Club (robotic bartender on MSC Virtuosa) and Hola! Tacos & Cantina.

Minors Package

The Minors Package is for children ages 3 to 17 on European itineraries and ages 3 to 12 in the Caribbean and North America. It must be purchased when underage guests are traveling with adults who've purchased a beverage package.

This package covers a wide variety of nonalcoholic beverages. They include mocktails, fresh fruit and protein cocktails, energy drinks, flavored water, sodas by the glass or bottle, hot beverages (think regular coffee and tea) and soft-serve ice cream. (Note that soft-serve ice cream is complimentary only on MSC ships sailing from the U.S.)

Guests can use the package to purchase drinks in the self-service buffet; the main restaurant; on Ocean Cay , the line's private island; and at bars on the ship. Kids can only use the package in the specialty restaurants if the adults traveling with them have purchased an Easy Plus or Premium Extra package.

Alcohol-Free Package

The Alcohol-Free Package includes the same beverages as the Minors Package, but it's available to purchase for adults (or anyone 13 and older in the Caribbean and North America).

The same restrictions apply regarding where you can (and cannot) use the package on and off the ship.

Easy Package

MSC's Easy Package offers both alcoholic and nonalcoholic options for adult passengers. The list of covered beverages includes select classic or international cocktails; a variety of spirits (vodka, gin, rum, tequila, brandy and whisky); house wines (white, red, rose and sparkling); Heineken on draft or in the bottle (the brand of beer may vary); nonalcoholic cocktails and mixed drinks; fountain or canned soft drinks; fruit juices by the glass or in the bottle; bottled mineral water; and hot drinks such as espressos, cappuccinos, lattes, hot tea and hot chocolate.

You can use the package in the bars, the main restaurant and the buffet, and on Ocean Cay, but not in the specialty restaurants or signature venues.

Easy Plus Package

The next upgrade in MSC Cruises' drink packages is the Easy Plus option, which covers drinks up to $10. The included beverages with the package are a selection of classic and frozen cocktails; protein shakes and fresh fruit cocktails; well spirits, liqueurs and cordials; a variety of bottled and draught beers; mocktails and all nonalcoholic beverages; bottled mineral water; and the hot drinks included in the Easy Package mentioned above.

The Easy Plus Package also provides a selection of wines by the glass and a 10% discount on bottles of wine. You can use this package in the main restaurant, at the bars, in the buffet, on Ocean Cay and in the specialty dining venues. It is not available to use in the signature venues.

Premium Extra Package

If you enjoy Champagne, fine wines and premium spirits, you'll want to splurge on MSC's Premium Extra Package for your cruise vacation.

This package covers drinks up to $16; a wide selection of international and premium cocktails; mocktails and nonalcoholic drinks; premium spirits, liqueurs and cordials; fresh fruit and protein cocktails; a wide variety of draft and bottled beers; bottled mineral water; and classic or specialty hot drinks (Irish coffee, anyone?).

You can also purchase bottles of wine and Champagne at a 25% discount and order fine wines and Champagne by the glass (up to $16). You can use the package everywhere except for the signature venues.

If you've reserved accommodations in the MSC Yacht Club, the line's ship-within-a-ship private enclave, you will automatically receive the Premium Extra Package as part of your cruise fare. You may use it to purchase beverages at the Top Sail Lounge and exclusive restaurant in the Yacht Club and at any of the complimentary or specialty dining venues around the ship.

What are the MSC drink package prices?

fantastica package msc cruises

MSC's package pricing is based on the length of the cruise, with longer voyages having a lower price per day. You'll save at least 15% on the price if you purchase the package online before your cruise rather than on board. (The current prices listed below come in at even higher savings.) All gratuities are included in the prices.

The following package prices are per person, per day.

  • Advance purchase: One- to six-night cruise, $21; seven-night or longer cruise, $19
  • Onboard purchase: One- to six-night cruise, $25; seven-night or longer cruise, $22
  • Advance purchase: One- to six-night cruise, $30; seven-night or longer cruise, $28
  • Onboard purchase: One- to six-night cruise, $35; seven-night or longer cruise, $33
  • Advance purchase: One- to six-night cruise, $49; seven-night or longer cruise, $46
  • Onboard purchase: One- to six-night cruise, $60; seven-night or longer cruise, $57
  • Advance purchase: One- to six-night cruise, $64; seven-night or longer cruise, $61
  • Onboard purchase: One- to six-night cruise, $76; seven-night or longer cruise, $72
  • Advance purchase: One- to six-night cruise, $88; seven-night or longer cruise, $85
  • Onboard purchase: One- to six-night cruise, $104; seven-night or longer cruise, $100

You can also take advantage of MSC's special promotions on select sailings that include a beverage package. For example, a current promotion online has 40% off cruise fares and includes a drink package (the Easy Plus Package), Wi-Fi and up to $400 of onboard credit per cabin, depending on the category booked. You can upgrade the drink package before you sail (at a discounted price) or once on board the ship for full price.

MSC cruise drink packages FAQ

fantastica package msc cruises

What happens if I want to purchase a drink that costs more than the package allowance price?

If you want to order a cocktail, glass of wine or spirit that's not included in the package you've purchased, you will only pay the difference in price between the package allowance and the price of your beverage.

Are the drink offerings the same on all MSC Cruises?

You'll find a variety in the selection of beverages and ingredients used to make cocktails, depending on the destination of your MSC cruise and the time of year. If you thoroughly enjoyed one type of wine during your summer cruise in the Mediterranean, you might not be able to order the same wine on board your Caribbean cruise during the holidays.

What is the best time to buy MSC Cruises drink packages?

As I mentioned above, it's best to purchase your drink package online before your cruise for the lowest price. The MSC Cruises website advertises discounts of up to 15% when you purchase in advance of your sailing rather than on board the ship. Once your cruise is booked, you can select the package of your choice for your voyage under the "Manage Your Booking" section.

Are drink packages available on MSC Cruises ships?

Drink packages are available on all MSC Cruises ships, except for vessels sailing to South Africa or China.

Is a drink package included if I book a world cruise?

The line's Dine & Drinks package is included if you're embarking on a world cruise with MSC. The package covers house wines, draft beer, soft drinks and mineral water at the buffet and in the main restaurant during lunch and dinner. This package is only available to guests sailing on the world cruise; it is possible to upgrade the package.

Can you upgrade an MSC Cruises drink package?

Yes, all passengers have the option to upgrade their packages. Before your sailing, upgrades are only available if the package is included in your cruise promotion; the upgrade will be available at a discounted price. Otherwise, you can upgrade your beverage package once you board the ship, but it will be at full price.

Is there a limit on drinks with an MSC Cruises drink package?

The all-inclusive packages do not put a limit on the number of alcoholic beverages, specialty coffees, bottled mineral waters or other drinks you can order each day.

Is an MSC Cruises drink package right for you?

fantastica package msc cruises

If you enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail or aperitif, have a glass of wine (or two) at dinner and possibly even splurge on a chocolate martini for an after-dinner drink at the show, a drink package could be a worthwhile investment for your cruise.

Many people also prefer bottled water over the free water available at the dining venues and lattes or cappuccinos over regular coffee in the morning. If that's you, the cost of the individual nonalcoholic and alcoholic beverages can add up quickly during a weeklong cruise. And you could pay a lot more for purchasing a la carte drinks than you would with a beverage package, especially if you plan on ordering fancy wines and specialty cocktails.

For example, if you're on a four-night cruise, the Easy Plus Package will cost you $64 per person, per day, which includes gratuities, for a total of $208. There is no limit to either the nonalcoholic or alcoholic beverages you consume, so if want one or two lattes to start your day, have a glass of wine and bottled water at lunch and have a few bottled waters by the pool, you're probably already at about half of the daily price (or more) of the package if you were purchasing the items individually.

Add to that a pre-dinner drink, a glass of wine or two at dinner with bottled mineral water, and then maybe a cocktail later in the evening, and you're easily past that $64 per day — and you've had to pay gratuities on the bar bills.

Related: Are cruise line drink packages worth the price? What to know before you buy

An advantage of buying one of the two higher-tier packages is the discount on bottles of wine. If you enjoy ordering bottles of fine wine at dinner, then this could be a plus if you have one of the more expensive packages.

If you're cruising in the Middle East, you should know that MSC Cruises will not serve alcohol due to Saudi law while the ship is docked in a Saudi Arabian port. Alcohol will be served again once the ship is sailing in international waters. But if you have a few days in Saudi Arabia, that's something to consider when purchasing a beverage package.

Bottom line

Doing the math is the best way to determine if a drink package makes sense. If you think you'll want all the beverages that come at an extra cost on the ship, then the best option is to purchase a package pre-cruise online. Buying the package beforehand affords the most significant discount and will save money over waiting to purchase it on board the ship.

Also, if you're traveling with someone in the same cabin (or you plan to dine with them) and they want a drink package, you won't have the choice to purchase a package — you'll have to spring for one, too.

MSC Cruises’ MSC Voyagers Club loyalty program: Everything you need to know

Compared to some of its closest rivals, MSC Cruises has a relatively modest loyalty program.

Unlike the frequent cruiser programs at Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line , the MSC Voyagers Club loyalty program doesn't offer its members a free cruise after reaching the top tier. It does not offer a massive discount on the single supplement charge for solo travelers, as Royal Caribbean offers its top-tier members, nor does it grant priority access to onboard shows.

For more cruise guides, reviews and news, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Still, the MSC Cruises loyalty program offers several valuable perks at higher levels, including a complimentary meal in an extra-charge specialty restaurant once per cruise and priority access to tenders in ports.

The MSC Voyagers Club program also allows you to status match your way into one of its top tiers — something that no other major cruise line loyalty program offers.

Ways to earn points

The points-earning system for MSC Voyagers Club is a bit convoluted, as the number of points you earn on any given cruise depends on various factors.

For starters, you earn points based on the length of the cruise you take and which MSC Cruises "experience" you book. As regular MSC Cruises customers know, the line offers four onboard experiences, each with different inclusions and price points. Bella is the most basic — and least expensive — experience available. MSC Yacht Club is the top experience available. Experiences called Fantastica and Aurea are in between.

For sailings of four nights or fewer, each passenger in the cabin will earn the following number of points depending on experience type:

  • Fantastica: 400
  • MSC Yacht Club: 800

For sailings of five to nine nights, every guest will earn the following number of points depending on experience type:

  • Fantastica: 700
  • Aurea: 1,000
  • MSC Yacht Club: 1,500

For sailings of nine or more nights, they'll earn the following number of points depending on experience type:

  • Fantastica: 1,000
  • Aurea: 1,500
  • MSC Yacht Club: 2,000

In addition to the above, you can also earn points for extras when spending money on MSC Cruises ships or when booking in advance of sailing. You'll earn 100 points for every $150 you spend on prepaid and onboard expenses.

One caveat: Only the MSC Voyagers Club member who makes the final payment for onboard expenses will receive those points. For expenses for prepaid services that apply to all cabin occupants (and not single occupants), points will be equally distributed among the cabin occupants.

For example, say the total amount of prepaid onboard services that apply to all cabin occupants before the cruise is $600. If there are four cabin occupants, the spending for the points calculation of each member will be $150, which is equal to 100 points.

Related: The ultimate guide to MSC Cruises ships and itineraries

The final way to earn points is by updating your contact details up to 72 hours before departure on your next cruise. This will earn you 100 points.

All points, including for the cruise, onboard spending and updating your profile, will pop up in your account about 10 days after the cruise is completed.

MSC Voyagers Club tiers and benefits

There are four tiers to the MSC Voyagers Club program:

  • Classic : 1 to 2,199 points
  • Silver : 2,200 to 4,299 points
  • Gold : 4,300 to 9,999 points
  • Diamond : 10,000 or more points

As is typical for cruise line loyalty programs, the entry-level tier (Classic) doesn't provide many truly valuable rewards. By far, the most alluring benefit at this level is the 5% discount members receive when booking future sailings. (This discount is not valid for MSC Grand Tours and when booking Tandem cabins, which are specially discounted cabins that parents can book for kids.) That's real savings every time you book a cruise.

Additionally, Classic members receive:

  • An extra 5% discount on Voyagers Exclusives sailings made six to nine months before departure
  • An MSC Voyagers Club e-newsletter
  • MSC Voyagers Club personalized luggage tags for embarkation in the e-ticket
  • An MSC Voyagers Club card
  • An invitation to a "welcome back" cocktail party
  • A dedicated number to call on board
  • Discounts on many packages and amenities, including onboard pictures, digital accessories, Wi-Fi and spa and fitness offerings
  • An MSC Shops discount (for each $50 spent in any onboard shops, you will receive a $10 discount)

Note that the MSC Shops discount has a lot of fine print. The discount is not combinable with promotions available on board and is not available for spending on tobacco products and electronics. It's also only valid on the first day of a cruise. That final point prompts us to downgrade the value of this perk considerably.

Upon reaching the second tier of the program, Silver, you get a couple of additional perks. The most notable to us is a $50 onboard credit per person, plus double MSC Voyagers Club points, for all bookings made more than 12 months before departure. (If you book nine to 12 months in advance, you get the $50 credit but not the double points.)

The Silver level also brings an unspecified milestone reward and all the perks of the lower-tier Classic level.

Related: Everything you need to know about MSC Cruises cabins and suites

You will be a member of the Classic level as soon as you take a single cruise, as it takes only 1 point to reach the Classic level. You also might be able to reach the Silver level in just one cruise if you take a long voyage of nine nights or more, pay for the top MSC Yacht Club experience and do a modest amount of onboard spending.

Still, a more typical cruiser sailing seven-night trips at a mid-tier Fantastica or Aurea experience level would need two or three cruises to reach the Silver level.

The elite level that makes a difference

Being loyal to MSC Cruises starts paying off in a more meaningful way once you reach the Gold level of the MSC Voyagers Club program. Even here, though, the rewards are still relatively modest.

The Gold level comes with one solid perk: priority disembarkation in ports where a tender boat is required. This can make a real difference in your cruising experience, as it means you can get off the ship much faster in some cases than the majority of other passengers. That will allow you to maximize your time in tender ports.

Additionally, Gold status brings all the perks of the tiers below it plus:

  • A complimentary one-hour thermal area session once per cruise
  • A complimentary gift
  • A complimentary photo taken during the "welcome back" cocktail party
  • A complimentary birthday cake when it's your birthday

It could take you as few as two cruises to reach the Gold level if you sign up for longer sailings and pay for the top MSC Yacht Club experience. Someone sailing seven-night trips at a mid-tier Fantastica or Aurea experience level would need four or five cruises to reach the Gold level.

The best elite perk with MSC Voyagers Club

Alas, there isn't a "wow" perk in the entire MSC Voyagers Club menu. As noted above, unlike some lines, MSC Cruises doesn't award top-tier members with truly high-value perks such as a free cruise. Still, MSC Voyagers Club's top Diamond status tier does come with a few enticing benefits.

Our favorite perk in the entire MSC Voyagers Club program is the complimentary dinner at a specialty restaurant that comes with Diamond-level status. That said, be warned that the complimentary dinner comes with a lot of fine print (so much fine print, in fact, that to use it verges on the ridiculous).

The complimentary dinner, in theory, is for you and a cabinmate. However, among the fine-print caveats is that two Diamond members staying in the same cabin don't get two free dinners.

If you and your spouse are both Diamond members, and you dine together using the perk, MSC Cruises counts that as you both using your perk for that one meal. That said, if you had two other people staying with you in the same cabin, you and your spouse could each use your perk to take one of them out for the free dinner, resulting in two free dinners for your cabin.

Additionally, the complimentary dinner privilege at specialty restaurants might not be available on all ship classes. Members under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult at dinner. Also, drinks are not included with the complimentary dinner, nor are you allowed to bring outside drinks into the restaurant.

Related: The 6 types of MSC Cruises ships, explained

Should all that prove too confusing, MSC Voyagers Club Diamond status thankfully also offers two other solid perks:

  • A priority line for boarding on embarkation day
  • Priority disembarkation at the end of the cruise

Diamond level also provides all the perks of the tiers below it plus:

  • Courtesy bathrobe and slippers available during the cruise
  • A complimentary dance class
  • An invitation to an exclusive Diamond Party
  • Late cabin checkout on disembarkation day
  • A chocolate gift

Someone sailing seven-night cruises at a mid-tier Fantastica or Aurea experience level would need to take about eight to 10 trips to reach the Diamond level, depending on onboard spending.

In contrast to every other major cruise line loyalty program, MSC Cruises customers do not get "forever status" once they reach a certain tier of the MSC Voyagers Club. Once achieved, your status is only good as long as you take a cruise at least once every 36 months.

If you don't take a cruise once every 36 months, you will see your points in the MSC Voyagers Club disappear and your entire account erased. You'll have to reenroll and start all over again.

This is a notable difference from other cruise line loyalty programs, as "forever status" is one of the great allures of such programs. Many airline frequent flyer programs, by contrast, require loyalty members to requalify for status each year.

MSC Voyagers Club status match

As noted above, the MSC Voyagers Club program allows you to status match your way to its top tiers — something other major cruise line loyalty programs don't offer.

If you show proof of a high loyalty program status level with a competing cruise line, a hotel company or even a booking site such as Expedia, you can catapult your way from no status to a top-tier status with MSC Cruises in a jiffy. A high status level at an airline, alas, won't get you a status match at MSC Cruises, with a handful of exceptions such as a high status level at Air China.

This MSC Cruises status match, to us, is a big deal. It's one thing that sets MSC Voyagers Club apart from other cruise line loyalty programs.

The status match process at MSC Cruises is simple. Go to the dedicated enrollment page for MSC Voyagers Club status matching at the MSC Cruises website. You'll find a short online form where you enter some personal details (including name, birth date and address) and details about your status level with another loyalty program. You'll then have to upload a picture of your membership card for that program (or, if you don't have a membership card, a screenshot of your online account page showing your name and status).

That's it. Within a few days, you'll get an email or text welcoming you into the MSC Voyagers Club program at a status tier that matches your status with the other brand.

The dedicated enrollment page lists more than 60 loyalty programs from which you can status match into the MSC Cruises loyalty program. They include such cruise line loyalty programs as Royal Caribbean's Crown & Anchor Society and Carnival Cruise Line's VIFP Club program . Your status in the loyalty programs run by such major hotel chains as Hilton , Hyatt and Marriott also can be submitted for a match.

MSC Cruises doesn't offer a chart showing which tier of its loyalty program you will receive based on your tier at each of the other brands. Our staff members at TPG have had luck matching into the top Gold or Diamond tiers of the MSC Voyagers Club program from high levels of competing programs. One TPG editor received top Diamond tier status in the MSC Cruises program as a match to World of Hyatt Globalist status, for instance. Another staffer received Gold status in the MSC Cruises program as a match to the Diamond level in Royal Caribbean's program.

You can enter your status in only one program when seeking a match, so pick the program in which you have the highest status level.

Bottom line

MSC Cruises offers some decent perks in its four-tier loyalty program, including discounts and onboard credits when you book additional cruises. It also allows cruisers to status match their way to the top tiers of the program.

Still, the MSC Voyagers Club program is not nearly as robust a frequent cruiser program as those offered by such rivals as Royal Caribbean and Norwegian.

MSC Cruises' Latest Sale Has Voyages Starting at $179 — When to Book

The sale is running until April 18.

fantastica package msc cruises

Courtesy of MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises is offering monumental savings on sailings to warm weather destinations starting at less than $200 per person.

The sale, which was extended and must be booked by April 18, offers cruises starting at just $179 per person, according to MSC. The sale rate is based on double occupancy and does not include the taxes, fees, or port expenses.

Travelers who take advantage of this deeply-discounted rate can sail on three and four night journeys from Miami for just $179, or from Orlando starting at just $189, MSC shared with Travel + Leisure .

“It’s a great opportunity, whether you’re curious about cruising for the first time or you’re an avid cruiser looking to book your next sailing,” Koreen McNutt, the senior vice president and commercial sales officer for MSC Cruises USA, told T+L. “These quick getaways let guests discover everything we have to offer from world-class onboard entertainment and outstanding family programming to a variety of delicious dining venues and wonderful amenities. Plus, these short cruises all visit our private island in The Bahamas, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, with beautiful white-sand beaches and pristine water brimming with vibrant marine life.”

The sale also includes MSC’s cruises from Galveston , which the company plans to introduce as its newest homeport in the United States in 2025. The cruise line expects to sail 7-night trips to Mexico and Central America on the MSC Seascape out of Galveston, which start at just $459 per person during the sale.

In addition, MSC is offering savings on its newest ship, the MSC World America , which the company plans to launch next year complete with a thrilling over-water swing ride, 13 different restaurants, an 11-deck-high dry slide, and more. Cruises on this ship start at just $649 per person as part of the sale.

“Cruising offers an unbeatable value proposition for vacations and we’re offering more itinerary options from a larger selection of embarkation ports than ever before, which makes it even easier for more people to discover what MSC Cruises is all about,” McNutt added.

Beyond the cruise fare, MSC is offering the option for travelers to add a drink package and Wi-FI to their booking starting at just $329.
