Finland Tour Reviews

Finland - tour highlights and travel tips.

Winter is a good time to plan a holiday to Finland

Spending holidays in Finland is like visiting a winter wonderland. However, this northern European nation rarely gets the attention it deserves. Finland is one of the most outstanding and breath-taking countries in the world. In winter, its snow-covered forests, frozen valleys, and endless horizons will transport you to a fairy-tale world. During the summer, tree lines as far as the eye can see, clear blue skies, and untouched lakes will make you want to stay forever. A trip to Finland needs to be in your travel bucket list if it isn’t already. Don’t miss out on some of the most breath-taking landscapes on earth.

Travel Highlights

  • Visit Suomenlinna, which is an 18th century sea fortress and a UNESCO world heritage site.
  • Visit Helsinki Senate Square, a must-see in every visit to Helsinki.
  • Rovaniemi is the “official” home of Santa Claus, and a mere one hour flight from Helsinki .
  • Högberget’s Cave is another outstanding sight that was formed during an ice age.
  • The Legendary Gold Fields of Lapland is full of myths and adventure.

Travel Tips

  • Finland is the land of saunas. It would be a crime to not seek one out while visiting. The country claims to have roughly 3.5 million saunas in all of Finland, which is equivalent to a sauna for every 1.6 people.
  • Thanks to the strong influences from Sweden and Russia, Finnish architecture is one of the most breath-taking ones in Europe. Go for a walk around Helsinki and admire the architecture, especially works by Alvar Aalto.
  • If you’re looking to connect with nature, there’s no better place than Finland. Pack appropriately and head out to the Finnish archipelago for an amazing experience.
  • If you’re not planning on driving, then it’s a good idea to obtain a Rail Pass while in Finland. These passes could save you quite a bit on transportation, and help you get around the country easily.
  • For those who want to visit Finland on a budget, opt for the Fall and Winter months. Prices at these times are, as you might expect, much cheaper than the high season. Frozen Finnish landscapes are truly mesmerizing, which makes it absolutely worth it.
  • If you’re hunting for northern lights, then the winter months are the best times to visit. Sign up for a northern light safari, and go out hunting for northern lights on a snowmobile!

Finland has seasonal weather so please do check up on best time to visit Finland before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Finland, do check out our Finland Travel Guide for more information.

HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR FINLAND TOURS INCLUDE:

Finland has some of the most beautiful natural scenery and untouched wilderness in Europe. It is no secret that Finland is a magical winter destination with our Lapland Arctic highlights tour and Lapland Christmas Magic escorted tour amongst many options for Finland tours in wintertime.

But with thousands of lakes and beautiful forests summer in Finland should not be dismissed. Have you ever found yourself saying "if only there were more hours in the day?" In Finland your wish will come true. Just as Finland experiences no sun in winter months, the opposite is true in summer.

With 24 hours of daylight in the north and only 'twilight' in the south you literally have more hours to explore Finland and its beautiful forests and thousands of lakes where you can enjoy canoeing, fishing, camping and sauna. For an authentic short escape, our Endless summer days by Lake Saimaa tour will have you experience the tranquillity of Finnish lakes.

Northern Lights/Aurora Borealis in Scandinavia are at their most frequent between end of September and end of March. A range of our Finland and Scandinavian tours have been made to maximise your chances of viewing this remarkable phenomenon. Autumn colours & Aurora Borealis is an example of a wonderful Finnish Autumn tour, but to maximise your experience, all our Northern Lights tours are away from the cities to avoid artificial light pollution.

In winter Finland transforms into a fairytale landscape of whites and ice and is the best time of the year to travel to northern Finland and Lapland. Most of the traditional Lappish activities involve snow, so we would recommend you travel between December and April.

Be sure not to miss Northern Lights/Aurora Borealis tours, snowmobile driving, husky ride, reindeer sleigh rides, snowshoeing and visiting the real Santa Claus which are all activities offered in most of our Finland tours.

OUR FINLAND TOURS CAN INCLUDE:

Our Finland travel options are endless and depending on what you want to experience we have a Finland tour suitable for any age and interest.

For a true taste of what Finland has to offer in summer, why not take our independent self-drive Green Forests & Blue Lakes in Finland tour package. This tour to the eastern parts of Finland is like taking a trip into the heart of Finnish identity. You will enjoy relaxing green forests, rolling hills and glittering lakes.

If you don't fancy sub-zero temperatures associated with Finland in winter, consider an Autumn tour. During this Lapland Autumn Tour you can stay in an Aurora Dome whilst experiencing peaceful afternoons at the lake and Northern Light activities.

If you want to try winter activities such as snowshoeing, snowmobile rides, husky safari or reindeer rides - Finland is the place to be. There is almost always snow in Northern and Eastern Finland between December and March and you would not want to miss these experiences on a tour often in combination with seeing Northern Lights/ Aurora Borealis.

To meet and hug the real Santa Claus in Finland is often a once in a lifetime experience. During our Polar Bears & Santa in Lapland tour families get to meet Santa in his very secret hideout and learn about everything Christmas. All our Christmas tours include a range of winter activities, and if you can't find a Christmas in Finland tour to suit, we can tailor make an itinerary for you.

Many of our Finland Christmas holidays run on specific dates, however we also offer pre-Christmas packages such as Pre-Christmas at Aurora Village , New Year packages such as New Year's Eve in Lapland tour as well as tours starting in January.

Of course, a trip to Finland is not complete without visiting the vibrant capital Helsinki. This hotspot for design and architecture is not to be missed. You can take a break in a sauna, taste the Finnish cuisine, visit Nuuksio National park or simply take a stroll in Helsinki's design district.

Best time to visit finland.

Finland has pleasant summers, with July being the warmest month (temperatures usually average around 15°C).

Outdoor activities like hiking, mountain biking and fishing are popular during summer and spring.

In Lapland midsummer is also the time of the midnight sun, a phenomenon where the sun barely sets.

Winter runs from November to March and during this time expect plenty of snowfall - perfect for skiing, snow boarding, snowshoeing and sledding. With temperatures regularly hitting -20°C, Finland's winters are particularly cold, so pack accordingly if travelling at this time.

Geography and environment

Finland is home to large tracts of forest, a multitude of pure lakes and hundreds of islands, making it one of nature's most blessed landscapes.

The north of Finland (known as Lapland) is characterised by relatively flat terrain, demarcated by long rivers and due to its Arctic location, extreme snowfall and ice can be found, particularly in winter.

Bordering   Sweden ,   Norway   and   Russia , Finland also has long stretches of coastline along the Baltic Sea, the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia.

The coastal areas are home to thousands of rocky islands (which are mostly uninhabited) while the interior of the country is dominated by forests and lakes.

Top 5 culinary delights of Finland

1. karelian pasty.

This traditional, savoury pie can be found widely throughout Finland. Featuring a rye crust filled with rice and served with egg and butter, this is a simple yet tasty snack ideal for vegetarians.

Finland is home to some of the world's best fresh produce, and the variety of berries on offer is astounding. Blessed with ideal climatic conditions for berry-growing, visitors can expect to snap up superior tasting, fresh cloudberries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and lingonberries, See them offered fresh at markets and shops, served alongside meals in sauces, jams and spreads or baked in delicious pies.

3. Kaalikaaryleet

These baked cabbage rolls are a standard entry on most Finnish restaurant menus. Featuring ground beef, rice, onion and cream wrapped in cabbage rolls and served with cranberry or lingonberry sauce, they may be hard to pronounce but they sure are easy to eat.

4. Graavilohi

Finland has a proud heritage steeped in fishing, so it's no surprise that the quality of seafood is very high. This simple meal of salted salmon doesn't need any dressings or condiments as the pure, natural flavours of the salmon are the main attraction.

These sweet bread treats have numerous varieties, from cinnamon, to almonds and raisins. Typically eaten with a coffee, pulla are an inexpensive cafe snack - a great, budget choice in a notoriously expensive country.

What to pack for Finland

People packing for a tour

Water and windproof clothes

Protect yourself from Finland’s unpredictable weather with water and windproof clothes and a scarf - the Finns wear scarves all year round, so you’ll fit in with the locals.

Comfortable shoes

Whether you’re walking the streets of Helsinki or exploring forest trails, you’ll need a comfortable pair of shoes. If you’re visiting in winter, waterproof shoes are best for the snow.

An essential item all year round, sunglasses will protect your eyes from the bright Midnight Sun in summer, and the glaring snow in winter.

Finland is a photographer’s dream, from the city architecture to the Northern Lights. Remember to pack a waterproof bag for your equipment and bring extra batteries as they die faster in cold weather.

An adaptor plug

Voltage in Finland is 220V and the sockets are of Type C or F, with standard European 2-pin plugs.

Although planning an independent trip is feasible in Finland, the details of the logistics and the potential complexities of transportation usually make booking a tour here an appealing alternative. With these factors in mind, most travelers discover that the expense of a tour in Finland is a wise investment. Delegating the details of transportation, accommodations, activities, and dining to professionals guarantees a hassle-free experience, freeing you up to fully immerse yourself in the trip so you can relax.

You can find many situations where tours in Finland are more cost-effective compared to an independently planned trip. The affordability of a tour depends on factors such as the destinations covered, level of luxury, and duration. Each tour and independent trip is unique, but tour providers often offer competitive prices that match the luxury level of an independent trip with the same amenities. On average, a tour in Finland costs $356 per day, with many tours priced below this average, although some are higher. Prices for tours in Finland range from $290 to $9,580. When comparing costs with independent travel, it's important to consider that guided tours typically include accommodations, transportation, guides, meals, tickets, and even more. To accurately compare prices, it is essential to understand the inclusions of a tour package and thoroughly research the costs of independent travel in Finland.

Group Tours vs. Independent Travel in Finland

For many travelers, it is a hard decision whether to travel with an organized tour package or to plan a trip independently. Organized tour packages are a great way to travel in Finland in 2024 or 2025 because a variety of great deals and sales are now available. Also, because guided tours tend to be all-inclusive, they will provide great values on accommodations, transportation, entry tickets, food, and other travel necessities. You'll also have the benefits of knowledgable guides as well as the peace of mind that you don't have to plan out the entire trip. On the other hand, traveling independently provides more flexibility and control over your travel plans instead of the fixed schedule of a tour package. You can shift your schedule and budget around as needed. Also, it's easier to get closer to local cultures and visit those harder to reach destinations that tours usually don't visit.

What are the benefits of a package tour to Finland?

Traveling with a tour provides a multitude of advantages. One of the most significant benefits is the convenience of having all the details sorted out for you. From arranging transportation to securing accommodations and planning activities, everything is taken care of, allowing you to have a worry-free experience. This means you won't have to stress about finding suitable places to stay, figuring out logistics, or potentially missing out on any important sights. Additionally, most tours offer all-inclusive pricing, giving you a clear understanding of the total cost of your trip before you depart. The beneifits of a tour are

  • knowledgeable guides
  • comfortable amenities
  • not having to plan
  • reliable service and schedule
  • fixed budget
  • meeting other like-minded travelers
  • eliminating risks

What are the benefits of independent travel in Finland?

The advantages of independent travel include freedom, control, and flexibility. When you travel independently, you have the freedom to decide where to stay, which attractions to visit, when and where to eat, and how to navigate the destination. Taking charge of these choices also gives you greater control over your budget, schedule, itinerary, and the level of luxury you desire during your trip. Other benefits include:

  • in-depth cultural opportunities
  • off-the-beaten-path destinations
  • flexible schedules
  • flexible budget

To ensure your spot on the tour to Finland, it is recommended to plan and book well in advance, preferably a few months or more prior to the departure date. While it is not uncommon for many people to reserve their tours up to a year ahead, our experience indicates that booking around 6 to 9 months in advance is typically adequate. It is essential to consider that numerous tours get fully booked ahead of time, so early booking guarantees your place on the trip. Moreover, booking early can result in significant cost savings, as tour companies often offer early booking sales and discounted prices. However, it is important to be aware that some tour companies may occasionally offer last-minute discounts for tours that are not fully booked. Finland Tour Itinerary

Welcome to Helsinki, the capital of Finland – a bilingual country – where all street signs are written in Finnish and Swedish. Your friendly driver will meet you at the airport and transport you to your hotel in the heart of this perfectly clean city, where design is king, nature is an integral part of life and culture and education are taken very seriously. The next day, join an expert local guide on a 3-hour tour along Helsinki’s major landmarks and spend the rest of the day exploring on your own. Your third day in Finland will take you on a private tour of picturesque Porvoo, an old Finnish town where you will be charmed by its many shops, cafes, and attractions.

A 2-hour train ride from Helsinki will deliver you to Turku, clearly a medieval European town. You see it in the riverfront, the market square, the castle, and the cathedral. Turku, a vibrant modern city of many events, proudly holds the title of European Capital of Culture- 2011. Along the Aura River – the Plough River – you can walk through medieval cobblestone streets. The river is the heart of the city. During the summer, the riverbanks come to life when people gather here to eat, drink, and listen to music. There are old sailing ships moored in the river, and you can take cruises out into the archipelago or to nearby Naantali. You can go on a guided tour with a local expert that will take you to the town’s main landmarks, and you will also have plenty of time to explore on your own.

Another short train ride, this time from Turku, takes you to the lovely town of Tampere, where the balance between “industrial” and “natural” is well preserved. A large city by Finnish standards, with more than 200,000 inhabitants, Tampere has managed to keep the small town feel. The city center is compact in size, and the atmosphere is friendly and casual. Tampere is located on a scenic spot on a narrow isthmus between two lakes. The Tammerkoski rapids and their riverbanks form the backdrop for old industrial buildings, and ridges formed thousands of years ago by ancient seas and retreating ice offer fantastic views over the two lakes. Original architecture and innovative urban development blend together to please both viewers and users of the built environment.

Your Finnish adventure ends with a train ride back to Helsinki.

Watch GEOFF TATE Perform QUEENSRŸCHE Classics In Wilmington, Delaware During 2024 Tour

The Jim Powers   YouTube channel has uploaded video of former QUEENSRŸCHE singer Geoff Tate 's entire March 29 concert at The Queen, Wilmington, Delaware. Check out the footage below.

In a recent interview with Finland's Chaoszine , Tate spoke about what it has been like to celebrate the 35th anniversary of QUEENSRŸCHE 's classic "Operation: Mindcrime" album on tour in 2023. He said: "At first I was sort of, do I want to go out and tour this record? And in retrospect, I'm very happy I did. Because I've gone out on the 30th anniversary, and now it's the 35th anniversary, and it does take me a while to get everywhere in the world. And we try to take it to places where smaller towns and cities, where people can come and see the show and not have to travel a long distance. And I like that. I like being close to the audience and in a smaller venue where people can feel it more and they can see the look on your face when you're performing. It just seems so much more personal."

He continued:  "The record, to me, is a very personal record. It's about the transition of this guy who goes through a lot of challenges and heartbreak. And I try to portray that with the performance as well. And if you're in a big giant place, I don't think people pick up on that. They don't see it that way. And so I like the smaller venues where people get to see that and feel it. But I love performing the record and I'm happy that all these different promoters around the world asked for it, 'cause I probably wouldn't do it if they hadn't asked for it."

Joining Tate in his backing band at some of his recent shows were James Brown on guitar, Amaury Altmayer on guitar, Jack Ross on bass and Danny Laverde on drums.

In August 2023, Tate told Mike Hsu of the 100 FM The Pike radio station that he was "on the second round of writing" his autobiography.

Last month, Geoff , who celebrated his 65th birthday in January, embarked on a co-headlining tour with VANDENBERG , the band led by former WHITESNAKE guitarist Adrian Vandenberg .

In April 2014, Tate and QUEENSRŸCHE announced that a settlement had been reached after a nearly two-year legal battle where the singer sued over the rights to the QUEENSRŸCHE name after being fired in 2012.

Tate was replaced in QUEENSRŸCHE by former CRIMSON GLORY singer Todd La Torre .

In the summer of 2022, Tate underwent an aortic valve replacement at the Universitäts-Herzzentrum Freiburg-Bad Krozingen (University Heart Center Freiburg) in Bad Krozingen, Germany.

Small Group Helsinki and South Karelia in 5 days (Guaranteed departure)

This was a lovely tour that I would recommend to anyone who is new to Finland. Everything was easy. Transfer drivers were on time at each stop. Alex, the tour director, made everyone feel welcome and important. His knowledge of the Nordic and Baltic states is amazing. And he seems to be fluent in just about every European language. The local Helsinki guide (I’m embarrassed to say I forget her name) was also knowledgeable and very happy to answer questions. The train rides to Lappeenranta and back were very comfortable. In Lappeenranta I was particularly spoiled as I was the only person for this leg of the tour, so I had the guide to myself. Arja was a delight. As a long time resident and business owner of the town, she knew it inside out. We strolled like old friends through the streets and pathways as I soaked up the beautiful scenery, culture and history of the this beautiful land. I would highly recommend this tour for the relaxing and informative time it provides.

Baltic Experience Tour

Baltic Experience

First and foremost with these tours, the enjoyment and experiences can be enhanced by the guide you have and our guide for this trip was exceptional! There are a LOT of cobblestones to walk on this tour so sensible footwear is an absolute must. Every city visited had its 'Old City" which were paved with cobblestones. It was a fascinating tour of the history of this part of Europe from medieval times to present day. The days spent canoeing and trekking in the countryside offered a welcome break from the cities visited. Klaipeda and the day trip to the unique, World Heritage-listed Curonian Spit National Park was just one of the highlights of the countryside experience. A hillside of Witches was a unique collection of sculptured tree trunks depicting all manner of mythical witches and demons. Amazing to wander through this huge area with such an engaging local guide to share the stories and history of the area. Hiking and canoe through Aukstaitija National Park's dense forests and lakes provided an opportunity for not only physical activity, but also time to swim and stop to appreciate the wild flowers and other flora. Plants that are considered garden annuals here, grow wild amongst the grasses and forests of this area. But Riga was one of the most beautiful cities visited. Fragrant gardens, fountains, old and new public sculptures and the well preserved and restored art nouveau buildings, made this city enchanting and fascinating. The trip did consist of long journeys especially by bus from Warsaw to Berlin. It proved to be quite exhausting and could be well improved by a stay somewhere in between these two major cities. Overall, if interested in Russian and German occupation and the history of these Baltic countries and their struggle for independence then this is the trip for it.

Bravo! I very much enjoyed learning about the capitals we visited and appreciate how knowledgeable the guides were and how friendly and genuine they were. What people love about helsinki tours.

Hi... Home too soon and reflecting on how great our trip with Intrepid was. We usually make our own arrangements when we travel. Though older, we do NOT enjoy the big bus experience. However, as we slip into our 70s, it's tougher to arrange all complexities of a trip. Since we are explorers at heart, we thought we'd try a small group trip. So...signed onto Scandinavia Explorer with Intrepid. How wonderful to be so independent yet not have to make all the arrangements. Hrvoje, our guide, was a walking encyclopedia about the sites and both fun and informative. And enjoyed meeting an Aussie lady to share our experiences. A very relaxed sort of trip. We will book another. So 5 stars!!! A little disappointed about the bike ride cancellation, but soon realized that street construction and other circumstances were the cause. One tip, however. On the small cruise part of our trip, we ended up in separate rooms. Not our guide's fault (he was the best), but perhaps with prior forewarning, we could've paid a little supplement to be in the same room even with separate single beds. We've been all around the world yet found ourselves wide-eyed with discoveries on this trip. Small trips like this allow one to meet the locals, too. Can't believe it's over. Although memories aren't. Thank you. What a charming almost fairy tale intro to Norway, Sweden, and Finland! Tom and Sherry Miller from U.S.A.
