Your guide to travel and experience Florence, Italy

Best luxury experiences in Florence, Italy

Florence has been a capital of luxury since the 13th century, when Florentine merchants imported precious materials such as silk, gold and silver, and transformed them into luxury goods: clothes, jewelry and much more. And even today, after over 8 centuries, Florence is the right place to enjoy luxury experiences surrounded by Italian history, art, and flavors.

After all, Florence is the birthplace of fashion designers like Gucci, Salvatore Ferragamo and Emilio Pucci.

Here are the best luxury experiences you can have in Florence, to make your trip to Italy unique and unforgettable.

Table of Contents

Private tours of museums in Florence

Museums in Florence can be very crowded , especially in high season, from April to October, and especially the two most famous ones, the Uffizi Gallery and the Accademia Gallery. Unfortunately there is no way to visit national museums exclusively , without other people, because they are public museums. But you can definitely have a better visiting experience with a private tour, rather than with a group tour.

With a private tour guide you can customize your visit, deciding how much time to spend in the museum, which artworks to see, and which artists or historical eras to focus on. You can ask your guide all the questions you want, and ask for tips and recommendations.

I am a licensed tour guide in Florence, with over 10 years of experience. Learn more about me and my private tours in Florence .

luxury experiences in Florence: a private guided tour

Stay in a spa hotel

Pamper yourself with a special and unforgettable accommodation: a historic hotel with an opulent spa to relax in. The hotels I recommend not only have a top-level spa. They are also housed in ancient buildings, with a history to tell, and of course with all modern amenities.

T he best hotel with a spa in Florence is definitely the Four Seasons Florence , it’s simply exceptional, and their standard is excellence. Housed in Palazzo Scala della Gherardesca, the hotel also has a one Michelin star restaurant , and the exclusive access to the historic private gardens , the wonderful Giardino della Gherardesca.

Another great luxury hotel with spa is the Golden Tower Hotel & Spa . I love the frescoed hall at the ground floor of the ancient Strozzi Tower ! And the rooms are gorgous, with stone walls and ancient decorated ceilings. The spa is located in the cellar of the tower, with vaulted ceilings. There’s a sauna, turkish bath, emotional showers, whirlpool and beauty treatments.

Have a dinner in a Michelin starred restaurant

There are currently eleven Michelin starred restaurants in Florence (you can find the complete list here ). They’re all great, but three of them are truly special.

The first is the historic Enoteca Pinchiorri , the only one with 3 Michelin stars , a true institution since 1974. It is very famous for its cuisine which blends Florentine flavors and French techniques , but also for its wine cellar, one of the most important in the world .

The second is the Santa Elisabetta restaurant of the Brunelleschi Hotel, which boasts 2 Michelin stars and offers contemporary Italian cuisine. The Brunelleschi hotel is one of my favorites in Florence, because it is housed in the oldest tower in the city, there is even a small archaeological museum inside. And it’s a wonderful hotel!

  • Read my review of Brunelleschi hotel in Florence .

The third is Osteria Gucci : the perfect mix of t imeless elegance by Gucci, and the contemporary cuisine of chef Massimo Bottura . You can come here even just to have a coffee, it’s right in Piazza della Signoria, next to the Gucci store and museum.

Hot air balloon flight in Florence and Tuscany

I personally had this experience a few years ago, and it’s one of the best luxury experiences I have ever done in Florence and Tuscany! A hot air balloon flight over Florence, or the rolling hills of Chianti, is really something unforgettable, and I would love to do it again.

The same company is offering two different options: a flight over the hills of Tuscany, or an early morning flight over Florence, at the sunrise.

It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate an anniversary or for a marriage proposal. You can choose a private flight or share it with a small group. The company will also take care of transport, picking you up at your hotel in Florence.

You can find more info about the experience (and my review) here: hot air balloon flight in Tuscany.

Truffle hunting experience in Tuscany

Florence is the capital of Tuscany, and Tuscany is one of the worlds capitals of truffles. A truffle hunt is an exciting experience that I always recommend to everyone. You will spend a day in the countryside , walking in the woods with an expert truffle hunter and his dog, searching for truffles. And then you will taste the precious harvest in a tasty truffle-based lunch.

In my opinion, this full day truffle hunting experience I am recommending is the best around. It takes place in San Miniato, the village famous for truffles, and is a family-owned and family-run business. You’ll meet Paolo and Francesca, their family and their dogs, and they will welcome you into their home to offer you a home-made truffle meal.

  • Learn more about the truffle hunting experience in my blogpost.

Sunset aperitivo in a rooftop bar

There is no better ending to a day in Florence than an aperitivo at sunset with a breathtaking view. Some of the city’s most elegant hotels have a rooftop bar, where you can enjoy a cocktail and some haute cuisine snacks, while enjoying the sunset over the red-tiled roofs of Florence.

  • I have written a whole blog post about that, so for more detailed info read: Florence best rooftop bars.

But I can already tell you that my absolute favorites are:

  • The B-Roof of the Grand Hotel Baglioni . One of the oldest luxury hotels in town has an excellent rooftop bar and restaurant, with a stunning view.
  • The one of the Grand Hotel Minerva , in piazza Santa Maria Novella. There is also a rooftop pool.

Exclusive tours of the Duomo of Florence

The Duomo is one of the most visited attractions in Florence . So it’s almost impossible to have private and exclusive experience that allow you to fully enjoy the beauty of the place, without nuisances such as queues and crows.

But by paying a little more than regular tours, it’s still possible to visit the cathedral in a special way , and to have access to areas that are not usually open to the public.

I especially recommend two experiences:

  • This tour of the Duomo terraces : you can go up to the roof of the cathedral, walk on the terraces and enjoy the view of the city from above. The tour also includes the climb to Brunelleschi’s dome .
  • Awakening of the Duomo tour. This is an exclusive early morning tour, starting at 6.30 am , when the Duomo is still closed. You’ll follow the official key-bearer preparing the cathedral and the Baptistery for the opening. Breakfast in a historic cafe is included. To book this tour you must go to the tour of the Duomo terraces page, choose your date, and select the “awakening of the Duomo” option.

Exclusive painting classes

Being the cradle of Renaissance art, Florence is the perfect place to learn to paint or sculpt. Even today, after more than 5 centuries, the city is full of artists, who still use traditional techniques to create timeless masterpieces. Here are a couple of interesting options, both are courses taught by highly experienced artists, who will provide all the necessary materials.

  • Private fresco painting lab : A private class with 3 different options to match your skill level: beginner, intermediate and advanced. The beginner class lasts 4 hours, and you’ll be able to create your fresco artwork from scratch, and then bring it home.
  • Painting or sculpting class . A 3 hour class with a small group (max 8 people) where you’ll learn how to paint with oil paintings, or sculpting with clay. Then, when your artwork is dried, is ready to be taken away or shipped back home.

Jewelry making class in Florence

Florence has been famous since the Middle Ages for the production of gold and silver objects : jewels above all, but not only. Try to think of the precious sacred furnishings that fill Italian churches!

If you want to learn the secrets of a goldsmith and silversmith, you can take a jewelry making class and create a jewel with your own hands to take home .

This silver jewelry making class is held by a local craftsman with over 40 years of experience . He will help you create your own personalized jewelry to wear immediately, it will be ready that same evening . If you want you can also add gems, or organize shipping to your home.

Luxury experiences: perfume making class in Florence

Learn the ancient and precious art of making perfumes in the workshop of a master perfumer . You will be able to choose the fragrances of flowers, fruits and spices to mix, to create a unique perfume tailored on you. And then you can take it home, to remember your trip to Florence every time you smell it.

The exclusive perfume making masterclass in Florence that I recommend is held in an ancient Renaissance palace, in an apothecary specializing in perfumes since 1700 , antica Spezieria Erboristeria San Simone. It’s such a beautiful place with great products, so you can also go there to visit (and to do some shopping!) on your own.

Rent and drive a Ferrari in the Tuscan countryside

If you love fancy Italian cars, this is your chance to drive a Ferrari around the rolling hills of Tuscany ! And also seeing some of the most beautiful landscapes around Florence. With this Ferrari tour from Florence you’ll drive through the Chianti region, to the villages of Volterra and Bolgheri , for the whole day. You’ll find your Ferrari waiting for you in front of your hotel, at the airport or wherever you want.

A staff car will follow you, with a tour director giving you directions and taking care of you. The whole experience lasts 8 hours, lunch and a wine tasting experience are included.

Renting a Ferrari is not cheap, but surely will be unforgettable.

Private transfer from/to the airport

To make your trip as comfortable as possible, I recommend renting a private car with a driver to get from the airport to your hotel, and vice versa. You will get there relaxed, without the hassle of public transport, and without having to carry your own luggage.

You can also rent a private car to go from Florence to some other nearby places in Italy, like Pisa or Siena.

That’s all, I hope this article will be useful for you to find the best luxury experiences in Florence . If you have other tips to add to mine, leave me a comment and share your experience with other travellers.

Luxury Travel to Florence

Travel+Leisure World's Best Awards 2023 logo in white

Surrounded by rolling Tuscan hills, the beautiful city of Florence is one of Europe’s most enchanting and historically influential cities. If anywhere in the world can claim to have shaped modern Western consciousness, it is Florence’s grand piazzas and palazzos.

Florentine art and architecture flourished throughout the Late Medieval period. One powerful banking family, the Medicis, rose out of this time to become de facto rulers of the city and were central to ushering in the Renaissance proper. Keen to display their wealth, they were patrons to scholars who scoured the libraries of Europe for Greek and Arabic works of natural science, philosophy and mathematics, and commissioned pieces by locals such as Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Machiavelli.

Today, the marks of this great epoch cannot be missed in Florence. The world’s greatest Renaissance artworks and sculpture can be found at every turn in the historical centre, an area that can be traversed on foot in under an hour but would take infinitely longer to properly explore.

Centred around the Piazza della Signoria are the crenellated walls of the Palazzo Vecchio, the arches of Loggia dei Lanzi, under which one can find restored Roman sculptures and Cellini’s bronze Perseus, and the vast Palazzo degli Uffizi, home to the Medici’s collections.

Nearby is the Piazza del Duomo, flanked by the famous cathedral, Giotto’s towering Campanile, and the octagonal Florence Baptistery. The Bargello National Museum safeguards Italy ‘s most comprehensive collection of Tuscan Renaissance sculpture, and to the north, the Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze houses Michelangelo’s David. Cross the Ponte Vecchio to the quieter south bank of the Arno River to reach the Medici family palace and stroll through the sprawling Boboli Gardens. Pisa is also an easy day trip from the city, while the vineyards and villas surrounding are a destination in themselves .

Combined with a constant thrum of tourists, Florence can be overwhelming. Let our experts craft your time in this incredible city, with privately guided tours sculpted around your interests and passions, off the beaten track excursions and hand-picked hotels. We can also get you into our favourite restaurants, whether fine dining affairs with sweeping views or a hidden local gem tucked away from the crowds.

It’s one of the world’s most exciting cities for artistic and cultural richness and yet so unimposing. Florence is dotted with first-class restaurants, chilled out bars and a lot of fun for people of all ages. Make sure you head up to the Piazzale Michelangelo for the best view over the city!

With its wealth of museums and galleries, Florence can be visited any time of year. Crowds thin out after July and August and the temperature is more pleasant for wandering through the city during spring, early summer and early autumn.

Florence Luxury Vacations

Located on the banks of the Arno river in northeastern Tuscany is the magical city of Florence, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s hardly changed since the Renaissance.

Bathed in architectural beauty, artist charm, and centuries of history, Florence is an Italian city of culture that will transport you back in time. Located in the heart of the exquisite Tuscany region, the city is surrounded by natural and man-made beauty at every turn. Home to iconic sights such as the Duomo Cathedral and Michelangelo’s David, Florence offers a journey of discovery and enlightenment — as well as a feast for the senses. If you are traveling from Rome and on your way North to either Venice or Lake Como, we recommend at least 4 to 5 nights to make the most of Florence. You could even add a few more days if you wish to enjoy a more leisurely experience of this picturesque region.

Best PRIVATE Tours To Take in FLORENCE in 2024 and WHY

Sean Finelli Last Updated: October 30, 2023

Don’t want to be shoulder to shoulder in group tours? No problem! You’re still going to want to visit the Uffizi Gallery, Accademia, and other attractions in Florence, so we have the perfect solution. Here are the best private tours in Florence and why you should take them.

Pro Tip: Planning what to do on your trip to Florence? Bookmark this post in your browser so you can easily find it when you need it. Check out our guide to Florence for more planning resources, our best private Florence tours for a memorable trip, and how to see Florence in a day (with itinerary).

The Absolute BEST Private Tours To Take in Florence

Private tours offer a lot of benefits that make them downright better. You have a more personal experience with your guide and get more input on the narrative.

Want to interrupt and ask a question? Go ahead, you’re in control of this tour! The downside is they obviously cost more than a small group tour. That said, we’ll be sure to let you know when a small group tour might be a good alternative to save money.

How to see FLORENCE in a Day Guide

Not ready to book a tour? Check out our  Florence Guide for more info.

Private Uffizi Tours

florence luxury tours

If you’re unfamiliar, the Uffizi was originally built to be the offices of the Medici family and is directly connected to the Palazzo Signoria (Palazzo Vecchio), which is the seat of government in Florence. The gallery is one of the world’s first public museums, opening its doors as early as 1765. The gallery was donated by the last Medici heir in 1737 under a pact that the works of art could never leave the city.

Today, it is one of the most popular museums in Europe. The Uffizi is also one of the greatest collections of Renaissance art in the world. Joining a private guide will bring shock and awe to your face as they walk through a Renaissance timeline that evolves from painting to painting.

While small group Uffizi tours are great value and by far our most popular tour in Florence, a private tour of the Uffizi is something you should definitely consider if you really want to dig into the gallery with a passionate, knowledgeable guide of Florence. See also our guide on the top things to see and how to visit the Uffizi .

Not ready to book a tour? Find out if a Uffizi Gallery tour is worth it .

Private Accademia Tours

florence luxury tours

Galleria Accademia in Florence, most often referred to simply as Accademia, is the home to Michelangelo’s David, which is one of the greatest sculptures ever created. Accademia is small, with some other things to see, but not on the same level as the Uffizi Gallery, Vatican Museums, or the Louvre.

That said, the gallery definitely warrants a tour. It’s usually a 45-minute to 1-hour portion of a larger walking tour of Florence’s best attractions. Our private Florence walking tour is easily the best way to acclimate yourself to the city and is run by some of Florence’s greatest and most sought-after guides.

While the private tour is an overall better experience, we run the exact same format tour in a small group , and it is run by the very same guides, which makes it excellent value. Another interesting option is our small group Accademia tour at night, which offers fewer crowds! Definitely take a look at either tour and our other resources on Accademia, specifically how to visit the Accademia Gallery .

Not ready to book a tour? Find out if an Accademia and David tour is worth it .

Private Tours To Tuscany and Wine Country

florence luxury tours

For me, it would be a hard choice to decide between seeing Tuscany’s wine country and Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. One depicts the creation of man by God and the other is what man can create in collaboration with God. Both are exquisite.

Due to transportation costs, private tours of Tuscany tend to be pricey. That said, if it’s split between a few people, they become great value and a lot of fun. We offer both small group and private tours of Tuscany that dive deep into the wine country.

For private tours and experiences, we have a tour that departs from Florence to visit an amazing organic vineyard in Chianti, Siena, and another small bucolic village in Tuscany. There’s a ton included, which you can read about in our Private Wine Day in the Chianti Hills from Florence . Alternatively, we offer another very similar tour as a small group if you’re looking for more value for your money.

If you want to avoid too much time in a car, we run a helicopter wine tour from Rome which is also available from Florence by request. It is the ultimate option for anyone who doesn’t want to get car sick and has some extra money to spare! There is also a small group tour to Tuscany by Vespa , which is highly rated and an exciting option for anyone prepared to ride a scooter through the Tuscan countryside.

Not ready to book a tour? Check out our article on the best Florence tours to take and why .

Private Food Tours

florence luxury tours

A food tour is something that we always recommend as a small-group experience. Much of the draw is socializing with others! Our flagship food tour is our Florence local food tour in Santo Spirito . Definitely check it out along with our other food and wine experiences in Florence.

Private Tour To the Leaning Tower of Pisa

florence luxury tours

Pisa is a truly unique experience with a lot to talk about, which is why we recommend a private tour ! Your guide will get into the details of why the tower is leaning and what officials are doing to keep it from falling.

The tower is only one of many attractions in the area that you’ll explore. If you’re looking to get better value, check out our small group version. It does not explore Vinci, but it does go to the walled town of Lucca, which is quite the experience.

A Luxury Guide to a Long Weekend in Florence

The capital of Tuscany is awash with bountiful culture, boutique shopping and high-end cuisine.

By Sophie Killip

view of florence from hotel savoy

Once the center of the Roman empire and forever intriguing visitors with its history and culture, when it comes to visiting Europe, Italy is often first on the list of countries to explore. Several of its cities are renowned for their fashion, food or historical interest – but one of the best locations for a weekend break where all of these things harmoniously come together is Florence .

Thanks to its superb architecture and the expansive collections of Renaissance artworks found here, Florence city center was deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Nowadays, the Tuscan capital offers visitors everything from culture and history to Michelin-starred dining and high-end, designer fashion. No matter your reason for travel, there is something to fall in love with in Florence.

Here at Elite Traveler , we’ve scoured the city to find the best hotels, eateries and activities for you to enjoy while spending a long weekend in Florence. Whether you want to be living and breathing the city, soaking up the Tuscan sun at a vineyard in the nearby hills or tasting one of the region’s traditional dishes, we’ve got you covered. For the best experience in Florence, choose to avoid the peak summer season – late spring or early fall offer fewer crowds and a more comfortable temperature.

Where to Stay

Villa La Massa

Situated four miles east of Florence’s city center, Villa La Massa is the ideal hotel for those looking to make the most of a long weekend in Tuscany. Set across extensive grounds and giving the feeling of a country estate, the hotel offers the best of both worlds; guests can spend the day exploring the city before escaping to the countryside to lounge by the pool or enjoy an alfresco dinner beside the Arno River.

Villa La Massa’s country estate feeling is intensified by the fact the hotel occupies a 16 th -century Medici villa and its various outbuildings, including The Mill and La Limonata (where lemons were stored for winter). Each of the 51 rooms and suites are individually styled, with its own character and original features including frescoes on many of the ceilings. The interiors work in harmony with the hotel’s heritage, exuding classic Florentine luxury combined with 21st-century amenities.

The hotel has a range of five-star facilities including a riverside restaurant, Il Verrocchio, which changes throughout the day to offer everything from light lunches to a six-course dinner tasting menu. There is also a second pool-side restaurant for outdoor dining, a charming bar in the main house, a basement gym and an indulgent spa. With everything Villa La Massa has to offer, it would be easy to forgo visiting Florence entirely – but the hotel offers regular shuttles and private transfers, making the 15-minute trip into town a breeze.

Hotel Savoy

The Presidential Suite suites has its own sitting room and panoramic views across the city / ©Hotel Savoy

If you’re looking for the heart of the action, the Hotel Savoy is the place to stay during a long weekend in Florence. The city-center hotel overlooks the famous Piazza della Repubblica and is only moments away from other attractions, including Florence’s prime retail street – Via Tornabuoni – which is lined with designer stores. As a Rocco Forte Hotel, Hotel Savoy has a natural grandeur to it; its interiors are a collaboration between Laudemia Pucci (daughter of Emilio Pucci) and Rocco Forte Hotel’s director of design, Olga Polizzi.

Hotel Savoy features a delightful restaurant and a large underground gym for guests to use although it lacks a spa or any kind of communal guest lounge. Instead, the designers have opted to put more space into the 60 guest rooms, which – even at entry-level – have room for at least a sofa or armchair. Opt for the enormous Presidential Suite or choose one of the Grand View suites for your stay. Situated on the fourth floor, these suites have their own sitting rooms and panoramic views across the city with the Duomo as a neighbor.

Belmond Villa San Michele

Offering sweeping views of Florence and the surrounding countryside, Belmond Villa San Michele can be found nestled on a wooded hillside five miles north of central Florence. Despite being further away from the main sights of the city (it’s a 20-minute drive) the hotel’s location means that the summer temperatures are more palatable than in Florence itself. The main hotel building was formerly a monastery originally dating from the 1500s and many of the original features have been preserved, becoming part of the hotel’s charm.

Villa San Michele features a total of 45 guest rooms split between the main house and the garden annexes, each with its own character and charm. Other facilities at the hotel include the pool and immaculate gardens, a small gym, a wellness suite for spa treatments, an elegant bar and two restaurants. Guests are also able to enjoy a range of experiences at Villa San Michele including cocktail making and wine tastings, rafting down the Arno River or private visits to the city’s museums.

Portrait Firenze

Set in a prime location on the north bank of the Arno River, the five-star Portrait Firenze is only moments away from the Ponte Vecchio and several of Florence’s other iconic buildings and galleries. A member of the Lungarno Collection of luxury Italian hotels, Portrait Firenze exudes a feeling of modest sophistication; its modern-classic interiors were designed by local Florentine designer Michele Bonan and inspired by the city’s fashionable 50s and 60s.

Despite its city center location, Portrait Firenze offers guests a private, boutique experience that ensures comfort at every step – from the discreet entrance and the sitting-room reception area to the pre-arrival form enquiring about guests’ preferred flowers, newspapers, breakfasts and pillows. The majority of the hotel’s 37 guest suites have floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the river and are generously sized, which makes up for the fact that the Portrait Firenze’s public areas are limited to the reception room and restaurant.

Safari Wine Tour and Wine Tasting

The rolling hills of Tuscany are renowned for their wines, with perfect conditions for endless vineyards of both red and white grape varieties. As the capital city of the region, whether you’re after a Chianti or a Chardonnay, Florence is a perfect base from which to explore the variety of wineries that the surrounding countryside has to offer. For something a little different to the usual wine tour and tasting, opt for a visit to Valle Picciola.

A working winery set within the Chianti Classico region, Valle Picciola is an hour’s drive from Florence or ten minutes from the smaller city of Siena. The modern winery estate has taken tours to the next level with its option of a Wine Safari Experience. Step aboard the estate’s open-top Jeep for a 30-minute tour of the Vallepicciola vineyards with your own personal driver and guide. The experience also includes a tour of the winery’s cellars and a private tasting of seven estate red wines, coupled with local cheeses and charcuterie.

If staying at Villa La Massa, this trip can be organized by the concierge team.

Art Experiences with Studio Iguarnieri

Said to have been the birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence has had a major influence on the art world for centuries with countless artists having called the city home – including the likes of Leonardo da Vinci, Donatello and Michelangelo.

There is a plethora of art galleries across Florence that are worth a visit on your next weekend break, including the Uffizi Gallery (home to a vast collection of Renaissance pieces such as Botticelli’s Birth of Venus ) and Academia Gallery (where you can find Michelangelo’s David ).

If pursuing the city’s art galleries sparks your imagination, head over to Studio Iguarnieri to find a creative outlet. Situated moments away from the city center in a beautiful townhouse beside the Arno River, Studio Iguarnieri is one of the best spots for discovering local Florentine art and also offers a range of Art Experiences.

These include lessons on alfresco painting, working with watercolors to one-hour taster sessions at a location of your choice (our session took place in the beautiful gardens at Villa la Massa). True art lovers will enjoy ‘A Day with the Master’, which includes lessons, lunch and visits to the city’s galleries guided by one of the studio’s resident artists.

If staying at Villa La Massa, these art experiences can be organized by the concierge team and the taster session can take place on-site at the hotel.

Sightseeing in Florence

bardini gardens florence

The Bardini Gardens or the Iris Gardens feature an abundance of beautiful plants / ©Getty

As one of the world’s centers of art and culture, it’s impossible to visit Florence without making time to discover the sights the city has to offer. We have already mentioned two of the major art galleries but other landmarks worth visiting on a weekend trip include Florence’s famous cathedral, the Duomo, the Piazza della Signoria, the beautiful Boboli Gardens and the Ponte Vecchio, the city’s legendary old bridge that connects the Uffizi to Palazzo Pitti. Florence also provides a wealth of alternative sights to visit if you prefer to avoid the crowds that can always be found at these top attractions.

Though the Duomo features the iconic dome that can be seen across the city, the smaller Cappelle Medicee – Medici Chapel – features a similar structure and is a celebration of the Medici family, who were once Grand Dukes of Tuscany. The Bardini Gardens or the Iris Gardens feature an abundance of beautiful plants without the heavy footfall that the Boboli Gardens is accustomed to.

Or if it’s views over the city you’re looking for, ignore the guides that suggest Piazzale Michaelangelo. Instead, head slightly further up the hill to Dan Miniato Church for better views and the chance to explore the church itself.

If staying at the hotel, the concierge team at Villa La Massa can arrange any private tours of Florence’s attractions, including travel to and from the city.

What to Eat

Whether you’re looking for a fine dining experience at one of Florence’s seven Michelin-starred restaurants or in the mood for an authentic or traditional Florentine dish, dining in the city has never been better than it is now. With a varied, dynamic food scene thanks to an influx of international chefs and restaurateurs, Florence has become a hub for foodies as well as those interested in history and culture.

For Florence’s signature meat dish, Bistecca al Fiorentina , head to Regina Bistecca. Set to the north of the Duomo, the restaurant features high ceilings and modern finishes – and offers T-bone steak priced by weight. At the understated, elegant Michelin-starred La Bottega del Buon Caffè, expect seasonal farm-to-table dishes paired with a curated wine list and views from the floor-to-ceiling windows out towards the Arno. For other traditional Tuscan fare with views across the river, we love Trattoria Cammillo, which has been owned and run by the same family since 1945.

12 Best Wine Tours and Tastings in Florence

By Erica Firpo

Podere le Ripi Winery overhead Val d'Orcia

A nearly 9,000-square-mile region of rolling verdant hills, salty coastline, and picturesque hilltop hamlets, Tuscany is an incredible play land for the eno-curious. The region's heavy-hitters are many, from Chianti Classico, to Brunello, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano—and, of course, the famous Super Tuscans. It's filled with landmark wineries and epic winemakers who know it, so they've created incredible experiences and tasting rooms to attract visitors, from fairytale to futuristic, combing natural landscapes with award-winning architects. Whether you've only got time for a light tasting or want to make a day out of a full regional experience, we've got you covered. Exploring this countryside is the tastiest way to truly understand Tuscany, which is why we've picked our favorite wine tours and wine tastings in Florence.

Italy Florence Winery Badia a Cultibuono

Badia a Coltibuono Arrow

Badia a Coltibuono is set in a beautiful landscape of rich greens near Siena. Its charming medieval building, a historic abbey with a romantic atmosphere, looks like the backdrop to a Raffaello painting. Guests reserve their Chianti tasting in advance, so you can be sure that everyone here has done their research—you'll be in good company. The entry-level wine tasting, though well planned, doesn't include snacks. If you're looking for a bite, go for the more advanced tasting, which includes charcuterie and bruschetta.

Default

Cantina Salcheto Arrow

Cantina Salcheto enjoys an enviable and jaw-dropping location—in the beautiful hills of Montepulciano—and manages to toe the line between rustic and futuristic, if that's possible. The 40-acre main vineyard is Tuscany at its best: rolling hills, rich colors, and a state-of-the-art cellar that's impressive in looks and, of course, in inventory—here, you're drinking Rosso di Toscana IGT and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG. There's no food in the basic tasting, but you can upgrade to the paired tasting or enjoy lunch at Salcheto's onsite enoteca.

Italy Florence Winery Rocca di Frassinello Winery

Rocca di Frassinello Arrow

Rocca di Frassinello is a beautiful and modernist winery designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano. The feat of geometry—whose rich ambers and reds seem to fold into the greens of Grosseto along Tuscany's coastline—is a must-stop for architecture buffs and oenophiles alike. Rocca di Frassinello isn't the kind of place you just happen upon—Maremma, in the south of Tuscany, is rugged cowboy country, so there are no crowds; rather, you'll be tasting cult favorite wines alongside well-researched and well-traveled culture vultures.

Italy Florence Distillery Ornellaia

Ornellaia Arrow

Ornellaia, which produces superb Super Tuscans that most can only dream of tasting, is one of the most exclusive wineries in Tuscany, and it's the perfect place to come with wine-loving friends. The landscape itself is worth the trip, with verdant and beautifully landscaped hills dotted with castle and towers here and there along the coastline between Livorno and Grosseto. Visitors will gain a fully immersive lesson in the world of winemaker Axel Heinz's Super Tuscans and innovative wines, which are favorites among collectors sommeliers the world over.

Karthika Gupta

Italy Florence Winery Castello di Ama

Castello di Ama Arrow

Located in a beautiful medieval hilltop town just north of Siena in Chianti, Castello di Ama feels like an old-fashioned fairytale—one that also happens to be a destination for contemporary art. Lush vineyards produce award-winning wine; gardens are a backdrop to 14 site-specific works and installations by 13 international artists, a combination that attracts wine connoisseurs and art lovers alike. The tour and tasting of Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG also includes bruschetta, though if you're looking for something heartier, the surrounding picturesque village has an enoteca.

Italy Florence Winery Franco Biondi Santi Tenuta Greppo

Biondi Santi Tenuta Greppo Arrow

One of the most popular wineries in the world, Biondi Santi's tours and tastings are superbly rated—for good reason. This is the seat of Brunello di Montalcino, one of the most popular reds coming out of Tuscany around the world. When you book, you're asked a series of questions relating to your knowledge of and interest in wine; from there, you'll be matched with a guide and tour type. Even those with little (or no) knowledge can enjoy the sweeping views and the history of the vineyard, as well as the universally edifying experience of learning about a trade and practice.

Italy Florence Winery Antinori nel Chianti Classico

Antinori Nel Chianti Classico Arrow

Antinori nel Chianti Classico is nothing if not monumental: a striking contemporary sculptural edifice that epitomizes the winery's impact on Italy's history and culture. Antinori is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) producers of wine, and one of the most historic: the label defined, and then redefined, Chianti Classico, upgrading it from a table wine to a prestige one. The architecture, designed by Marco Casamonti, best exemplifies this grandeur. Antinori plays the classics; expect plenty of silky Chianti Classico.

Altesino Arrow

Altesino is a postcard-perfect Italian country villa off a charming dirt road in the Montalcino hills. The late-14th-century Palazzo Altesino sets the stage for an elegant wine. Visits are private; often it's only you, your group, and the winemaker. The focus is Altesino's award-winning wines, from Brunello di Montalcino DOCG to Rosso di Montalcino, and you can also a enjoy a decent snacks pairing. The beautiful location promises to win everyone over, no matter how much they know about wine.

Italy Florence Tours Divine Tours

DiVine Tours Arrow

DiVine Tours offers a series of bespoke wine tours around Tuscany and other select parts of Italy—Umbria, Sicily, Puglia, and Piedmont, among others—all of which are highly personalized and professional. Miriam, DiVine's owner and founder, is a consummate professional who hires top-notch guides and experts. Her tours are very organized and very easy to understand, and you can customize pretty much everything. These tours are excellent for those interested in attaining robust knowledge of area wineries and their history, but they're not for people who don't like wine.

Italy Florence Winery Volpaia

Volpaia Arrow

A walled hamlet on a Chianti hill, Volpaia is the quintessential Tuscan wine fantasy visit. The town itself is charming and the castle drips with Florentine history, having served as a key defensive outpost for the Florentine Republic during its heyday. Volpaia wines are exceptional Chianti Classicos, and that's what you'll learn about on a private tour. The staff is very personable and friendly—but most importantly, they know and love Volpaia, and that enthusiasm is infectious.

Podere le Ripi Winery overhead Val d'Orcia

Podere Le Ripi Arrow

A beautiful Tuscan drive through winding rustic roads ends at Podere le Ripi, a photogenic winery with a modern reception and tasting area. Winemaker Francesco Illy (of the Illy coffee family) is known industry-wide as an innovator; his wines are biodynamic—and he himself is dynamic, too. After a tasting and snack, you'll leave with one key takeaway: that you can at once embrace and buck tradition while still creating great wine.

Italy Florence Winery Fèlsina

Fèlsina Arrow

Felsina's picture-perfect stone entrance comes into view after you've slowly meandered around the hills and valleys of Chianti—and what a sight it is. Here, the mentality is purist; everything you eat comes from the surrounding land. The olive oil is from single cultivars, and the oil-making process strictly adheres to Veronelli's rules of pressing. You can have a simple Chianti wine tasting, a wine tasting with a light lunch, or a wine and olive oil tasting with lunch alongside other wine lovers, culinary travelers, and anyone interested in the hows and whys of wine- and olive-making.

Private Orvieto and Tuscany Wine Tour From Rome

Private uffizi gallery and accademia gallery with michelangelo’s david, private chianti wine tour experience and florence highlights, private tour of uffizi & basilica of santa croce, private highlights of florence walking tour, deluxe wine tasting from florence, private pisa day trip from florence, nothing to show, why visit florence & tuscany.

Florence is arguably one of Italy’s most important architectural, cultural and artistic centers. During the Middle Ages, the city was a buzzing trade and finance destination that attracted the attention of many merchants which consequently led to a period of wealth and relative abundance. As the Middle Ages came to end it is no surprise that Florence became the birthplace and pulsating heart of the Renaissance artistic movement. Today, tourists have the opportunity to admire legendary masterpieces by the pioneers of the aforementioned artistic movement, such as: Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus” painting in the Uffizi gallery or Michelangelo’s “David” sculpture. Additionally, one can savor its beautiful landmarks like the Palazzo Vecchio and Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral. Surprisingly small as it is, this riverside city shines bright on the world’s “must see” list. Its world class architecture, characteristic narrow streets and romantic vibe will make you fall in love with it almost immediately. Florence is also the regional capital of Tuscany; Italy’s most famous and visited region. Tuscany is widely known for its countryside, olive groves and vineyards that produce and export, all over the world, some of the most exquisite and prestigious wines. The many pleasures of this region include: wine tasting tours in Chianti, exploring the incredible medieval city of Siena, home of many other artistic sites, and visiting the astonishing leaning tower in Pisa.

Top Things To Do In Florence & Tuscany

Uffizi gallery.

The Galleria degli Uffizi, boasts the world’s largest collection of Renaissance art, mainly collected by the members of the Medici family during the 16th and 17th centuries. It is the city’s most important museum with masterpieces like Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus” and “Allegory of Spring”. We strongly recommend to book your entrance ticket in advance to skip the long line.

Duomo Of Florence (Santa Maria Del Fiore)

This is the main church of Florence and arguably the most beautiful. Its original construction began at the end of the 13th century in Gothic style and completed structurally in 1436 with the incredible dome projected by Filippo Brunelleschi. The colorful and imposing bell tower of the cathedral was designed by Giotto and the baptistry is one of Florence’s oldest structure which was built on top of ancient Roman foundations!

Ponte Vecchio

This medieval bridge represents one of the most popular attractions in Florence. It is one of the few remaining bridges in Italy with houses and shops built upon that offer a wide assortment of jewelry and other precious antiques. The various musicians, portraitists and other entartainers create a constantly vibrant atmosphere that make it a simply unique landmark to visit.

Siena & San Gimignano

Siena remains one of the most loved and visited cities in Tuscany. It offers landmarks such as the stunning cathedral (Duomo) with its incredible mosaic marble floors and fascinating Tuscan Romanesque façade. Close to Siena you find San Gimignano which represents another medieval gem with its narrow streets and beautiful cathedrals.

It was once a maritime power; known for its rivalry against the other main ports of Italy such as Genoa and Venice. Now its known, all over the world, for the iconic 13th Century monuments in the Field of Miracles: (Piazza dei Miracoli) the leaning tower of Pisa, the baptistry dedicated to St. John the Baptist and the Cathedral. All Unesco World Heritage.

Florence: Tourist Hot Spot of Tuscany

If you’re looking for the tourist heart of Tuscany, you’ll find it in the city of Florence . Its Renaissance quarters are especially interesting, with sights like the Piazza della Signoria and the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.

The city’s main claim to fame, aside from being the cradle of the Renaissance, is being very walkable. There aren’t many cities in the world with as much history and examples of art within such a small area. So, you can literally drop off anywhere, head in any direction, and you’ll discover some of its best spots.

If even the city’s small span isn’t enough for you, you can find the epicenter of Florence’s treasures at the Galleria degli Uffizi , located at Piazzale degli Uffizi 6. This museum has the world’s biggest collection of Renaissance art. There’s around 100 rooms spread across two floors, lined up chronologically from ancient Greek art to 18th-century pieces.

While you’re in the neighborhood, don’t miss a chance to explore (and take a picture at) the Duomo, the most famous piece of architecture in the city. Its iconic cupola atop its graceful-yet-dominating architecture is impossible to miss.

Just a hundred meters from the Florence Cathedral, the hotel is a stunning mix of contemporary and antique furnishings that immerse you in the Florence atmosphere. It gives you a piece of Florence’s historicity during your stay.

The hotel is complete with all you need for an amazing stay, such as a private spa and a staff that doubles as a tour company!

Hotel Spadai is at Via dei Martelli. You can reach Florence through Vespucci Airport, or through the country’s railway network (most lines have a Florence station). If you’re taking a road trip, the A1 Motorway runs past the city.

Siena: Rich With History

Another picturesque town with many cultural and historical treasures, plus a great vantage point from which you can view the undulating Tuscan hills, is Siena . Don’t miss the Campo Square and the Cathedral, Siena’s very own Duomo.

This Gothic marvel is stunning both in and out, with over 200 years’ worth of Biblical art laid in its floor’s 56 panels! If you can’t get enough of the distinct flavors of Sienese art, go to the Museo Civico via the Cortile del Podesta and check out some of the best secular works of art of the 1300s.

One of the best views is via the awesome Hotel Athena , which is also mere walking distance from some of the province’s tourist attractions. Located in Via P. Mascagni, Hotel Athena is furnished with local handicrafts. Its terrace allows for a perfect view of the Tuscan hills, and its restaurant gives you a taste of fresh Sienese cuisine!

You can get to Siena from Florence via a 90-minute train ride, or via a rapidé SITA bus. If you’re taking a car, the travel time is around two hours but you’ll have to park outside the city walls.

Family Friendly Lucca

This is one of the more child-friendly parts of the Tuscan region, thanks to less tourist traffic and a decidedly more low-key vibe. It is a great launching point if you want to go to the area’s coastal towns, like Forte dei Marmi or Viareggio.

Don’t skip town immediately, though — the Cattedrale di San Martino is a rustic Romanesque piece of architecture from the 11th century, and one of the locale’s best-kept treasures. There are also two museums, the Museo della Cattedrale and the Museo Villa Puccini.

Lucca is best enjoyed through villas like the opulent-yet-simple Villa Pardi, with its wide and pretty grounds. The simple yet opulent design perfectly captures the airy luxury of the Tuscan countryside, with its manicured grounds, tall rooms, and tasteful decors. Villa Pardi is located at Via di Poggio Seconda. You can get to Lucca through the train line that runs from Florence to Viareggio.

World Famous Pisa

Primarily famous for its leaning tower and its history as a maritime superpower, Pisa is even better if you wait until nightfall when the crowds have gone home. This brings out the real atmosphere of the place!

Being a university student town, Pisa is more raw than either Florence or Siena. That does not mean it doesn’t have its own examples of fine art and architecture, such as the dome-upon-dome of the Battistero and the haunting quadrangle of the Camposanto.

Pisa is home to Bologna Hotel Pisa , which brings Pisa’s distinctive airs indoors, immersing you in the local flavor. The prestigious furnishings are unmistakably Italian, balanced between the practical and the dramatic. Just half a kilometer from the Cathedral and the main artery, this is the place to be.

Bologna Hotel is located on Via Giuseppe. You can get from Florence to Pisa via the ItaliaRail. You can also get to the town proper via the airport through either the Terravision or Autostradale buses.

Quaint and Charming San Casciano in Val di Pesa

Tuscany is not just about its famous provinces — there’s a specific charm to living in one of its small towns, too. This town, for example, has been almost completely rebuilt from the ground up after it suffered destruction during WWII.

While it does not have a bunch of art and architecture to its name, it is the Tuscan hub for wine and olive oil production. It is also one of the centers of agritourism in the area.

Imagine simply sitting back and enjoying some time trading stories with locals, surrounding yourself with amazing views such as the flowers of Le Dimore Mezza Costa (just one of the many top-notch bed and breakfast here). This quaint lodging is good enough to be a movie set, and modern enough with such amenities as flat screen TVs, free WiFi, and a private bathroom!

The B&B is located in Via Borromeo. San Casciano in Val di Pesa, particularly, is near enough to Florence but isolated enough from its hustle and bustle. It can be reached by a dual carriageway called by different names — autopalio, superstrada Firenze-Siena, and Raccordo Autostradele RA03. The line connects the place to both Florence and Siena, and is free for the time being!

Pietrasanta: Little Town with Big Art

If you’d like a little more art with your stay, then consider this little town in the Versilia region. Aside from the slow pace, the area is also a haven of creativity and there’s always a work of art being born in the traditional Tuscan spirit of the airy and the earthy. In fact, there are many workshops and art galleries here.

Make sure to stop by the Via della Rocca, which leads up to the ancient structures of Pietrasanta. The place also has its own Duomo and Battistero, which are both worthy of your visit!

The La Sosta degli Artisti is among the best places to stay in in this town, and also among the most evocative of the artistic airs prevalent here. It’s one of the more boutique hotels Tuscany offers. They serve a mean organic breakfast, and they have a spa that combines color and music therapy — just what you would expect in an art-oriented B&B! They have themed rooms, too. You can reach La Sosta at the Viale Guglielmo Oberdan. Pietrasanta can also be reached via Trenitalia’s Firenze-Pisa-Livorno line.

Barga: For The Nature Lovers

If you really love nature, Tuscany has plenty in store for you, and one of the best places for it is Barga. It’s a town which manages to evade the throngs of tourists in order to extol nature’s beauty. Make sure your camera can handle all the pics you would want to take here!

It has some great spots for art, too. The streets themselves were built between the 15th and 17th centuries, along with the town’s Romanesque Cathedral.

It’s a small town with a small selection of lodgings. However, you can’t go wrong with La Serra di Barga thanks to its breathtaking views of a lake and its proximity to downtown Barga. It even offers a view to the Duomo. This attractive B&B is located at 55051 Barga. The town itself is a three-hour bus ride from Florence. You start at the Via Delle Porte Nuove 17, then change at the Pizzale Verdi, and ending at P. Za Salvi.

Pistoia: Tuscany’s Hidden Gem

This spot might not appear on the radar of many tourists. However, Pistoia is another great launching point for excursions into Lucca and Florence. This is primarily because it sits halfway between the two provinces, on a train line to each.

Hailed as a European City of Culture, it sits at the foot of the Apennine mountains. In fact, some of its best art pieces are stored in the Museo dell’Antico Palazzo dei Vescovi. The Cappella del Tau, on the other hand, is a treat for anyone who appreciates the Gothic style of architecture.

The town also has a raw feel, which is perfect for those looking for authenticity above all else. Make sure to stay at the Locanda San Marco Palazzo Caluri, whose grand and homey feel will transport you to an environment fit for a movie set. The place is a 17th-century structure, and is just 15 minutes from the train station (at Via Porta San Marco). Using the Trenitalia’s Firenze-Pistoia-Lucca line, you can reach Pistoia.

Picturesque Certaldo

If you want to straddle isolation and ease of transportation, then Certaldo is hard to beat. This is a picturesque hilltop town with a railroad running at its lower part. In fact, you would have to love the hike. That’s easy to do, given the sweeping panorama of the surrounding country that Certaldo affords.

Certaldo’s walled half on the hill, Rio Castello, is a can’t miss. The Palazzo Pretorio, a keep that housed the governors from Florence during the 12th century, is also worthy of visit.

Adding to the local charm is the Podere Benintendi , which looks more like a mansion than anything — imagine a large property surrounded by well-maintained lawns and trees, with a pool set in the middle! In fact, the entire place is on a hill, therefore giving it an awesome view of the Tuscan valleys. It is located on Via Montebello Benintendi. Certaldo can be reached via the Firenze-Empoli-Siena line or the Firenze-Pisa-Livorno lines of the Trenitalia.

The Tuscan Countryside

True, this may not sound like an exact area. But you wouldn’t be in Tuscany if you had to be bound to a specific place just to enjoy it. In fact, the Tuscan countryside extends from Florence to Siena. It’s bounded in the east by Valdarno and in the west by San Miniato.

This section is particularly interesting because of its proximity to the many Tuscan sights, along with many of its villas and farmhouses. Luckily, the farmhouses have been turned into lodgings, some of which are available on VRBO! This means you can easily live the traditional laidback lifestyle in an authentic setting!

While you’re here, you’re in a perfect spot to explore the places that make this side of Italy so charming. There’s Pisa, Florence, San Gimignano, Lucca, and the Chianti wine area. The lush, rolling hills and sun-kissed vineyards surrounding you will in themselves be worth staying for.

Of course, your choice of lodgings would depend on your itinerary. If you’ve taken a tour such as those that Get Your Guide offers, it will be easier to be based off a main province like Florence or Siena. However, if you’re out to explore the local flavor and see what the locals are up to, then moving into one of the small towns is a better option, but it will be almost impossible to do without a rental car.

Though, whichever you choose, it’s pretty much guaranteed an adventure. Whether you stay in one of the luxury hotels Tuscany has or a cheaper vacation rental, you can’t run out of things to see and do during your Tuscany excursion!
