10 Things to Do at Frankfurt Airport on a Layover

As the busiest airport in Germany, Frankfurt Airport has plenty of activities to keep travelers occupied during their 2 or 3 hour layover.

If you’d prefer to venture into downtown Frankfurt am Main, scroll down for directions and our sight-seeing tips.

1. Unwind In An Airport Lounge

A great way to unwind after long international flights is by relaxing at one of the lounges in the airport. If you fly business class or first class, you’ll automatically have lounge access to your airline’s exclusive lounge. These include Lufthansa, Air Canada, Air France KLM, Emirates, Japan Airlines, and more.

Alternatively, you can also book a stay at the Frankfurt Airport VIP-Services airport lounge. It’s available for any traveler as long as you book in advance. Take relaxation to a whole other level at a fully equipped conference room or a luxurious private suite, complete with a chauffeur in a luxury limousine directly to your aircraft.

There are also several walk-in lounges that offer day tickets at more affordable rates, giving you access to buffet meals, unlimited high-speed free wifi, fully serviced bars, comfortable seating, and even showers. For more information on the different airport lounges, visit the airport’s official website .

We get a couple free lounge access tickets each year through one of our business credit cards, so check yours to see if that’s an option.

2. Take An Airport Tour

This tour is a fun way to learn interesting facts and see different parts of the airport you wouldn’t otherwise see. There are two tours offered: XXL Tour (2-hour tour) and Starter Tour (45 minutes). All tours are done from the comfort of an air-conditioned bus.

The XXL Tour is the ultimate airport experience. You can see the ground handling of aircraft, takeoffs and landings in the central runways, and new development sites. The Starter Tour allows you to see the highlights, like a quick glance at aircrafts being fueled and closeups of aircraft livery from all over the world. Book tickets here!

3. Admire The Views From The Visitors’ Terrace Or Open Air Deck

Get some much needed fresh air at the Visitors’ Terrace and the Open Air Deck! The Visitors’ Terrace located in Terminal 2 is a great place to get a closer view of the apron and planes landing and taking off on the runways.

The Open Air Deck is a roof terrace located in the transit area. Here you can take a smoke break, sit among the greenery under the sun, or watch airplanes. There’s even a telescope you can use for close ups, at no extra cost.

4. Go On A Shopping Spree

Frankfurt Airport has stores and shopping areas scattered in all terminals. The Airport City Mall, located pre-security in Terminal 1 features a wide range of retail outlets and restaurants. In Terminal 2, you’ll find all the airport staples like convenience stores, Duty Free, and famous designer brands.

You can even book a personal shopper to advise you on the best products or help you look for something specific. The personal shoppers speak Mandarin, Vietnamese, German and English fluently and the service is free of charge.

Even if you’re not in the mood to make purchases, it’s always interesting to see what’s available in other countries, isn’t it?

5. Experience A Flight Simulator

Traveling with children and looking for a fun activity to keep them entertained? Check out the flight simulator center !

Experience what flying is like from the perspective of a pilot and practice taking off and landing at different international airports. Choose from different simulations (there’s even one for younger kids), all under the guidance of an expert professional pilot!

6. Catch A Movie At Movie World

Another great way to pass time quickly is by watching movies. At Movie World, you can watch movies on a big screen for free! These small, private areas have TVs where you can choose from blockbusters, full-length movies, documentaries, and television series. There’s a wide selection to choose from, suitable for families and available in different languages.

German pastry and tea

7. Enjoy Delicious Meals, Drinks And Snacks

You definitely won’t go hungry with all the choices of restaurants available! The airport offers a wide range of options, from fast food chains, German local food, coffee shops and bakeries, Asian food, Italian food, and healthy options.

There are some establishments that are open 24/7 during the summer months such as McDonald’s, and other German chains like Bistrot, Scoom that serve everything from pastries, Schnitzel, sandwiches, and salads. Check the full list of dining options here.

8. Meditate, Stretch And Relax

After a long day of traveling, nothing helps like some peace and quiet. There are multiple spaces in FRA that allow you to have some time to yourself amidst the noise and bustle of the airport. You’ll find free-of-charge yoga rooms in both terminals, fully equipped with mirror walls, yoga mats, and a monitor showing short videos.

If you’re religious, there are Christian chapels, Jewish prayer rooms, and Muslim prayer rooms in both terminals as well. For those who are not religious, you can visit the quiet rooms. These rooms are entirely neutral and don’t have any specific cultural or religious features. They’re an excellent place to enjoy a few moments of contemplation and de-stress.

9. Freshen Up After A Long Flight

If you need to freshen up before traveling to your final destination, take advantage of the shower facilities available in the airport. The showers are open for use between 6:00 am and 11:00 pm. There is a small cost of 6,00€ to use them but this includes a towel, toiletries, and use of a hair dryer. Check the locations of the showers here.

10. Take A Comfortable Nap

Struggling with jet lag and want a comfortable place to sleep for a while? Book a spot at the NapCabs in Terminal 1 ! The NapCabs are small soundproof cabins with a comfortable bed, adjustable air-conditioning, alarm clock, USB charging station, free wi-fi, and even a work desk. Cabins are booked per hour with a minimum of 2 to 3 hours, depending on the time and must be reserved in advance online.

How To Leave Frankfurt Airport And Explore the City Center

If you have 7 to 8 hours or more available, then we definitely suggest venturing out of the airport and heading into the city to do some sightseeing. You’ll be surprised at how much you can see and fit into your schedule!

One of the most efficient ways to go about exploring Frankfurt is to start in Old Town, the heart of Frankfurt.

It’s home to important landmarks like Römerberg, the central main square, and Frankfurt’s City Hall. From here you can easily make your way to the Frankfurt Cathedral, cross the Iron Bridge, and stroll along the River Main.

There’s more to the city but these are the highlights to see when you don’t have much time.

For a full list of popular spots and main attractions to see, read our 1 day in Frankfurt itinerary guide.

Frankfurt am Main train station

Getting to Frankfurt city center

There are a couple ways of getting to the city center from the airport using public transportation. But you can also take a taxi or book a car rental if you prefer.

There are several bus lines which can take you to the center: 61, 77, 72, 58 and 62 bus lines (daytime buses) and 81 and 7 bus lines (night buses).

S-bahn (regional trains): Take the S-Bahn railway S6 and S9 lines to Offenbach Ost and Hanau. Then you’ll be able to transfer to downtown Frankfurt (Hauptwache Station).

U-bahn (metro): You can take U Bahn 8 and 9 lines, which will take you to Hauptwache Station.

Frankfurt am Main

Need to Spend The Night at Frankfurt Airport or Frankfurt City?

If you have a long stay at the airport, and especially if you need to stay overnight, we suggest booking a hotel near the airport.

It’ll be much more comfortable to relax in a hotel room before catching your next flight or train ride and it also allows you to explore Frankfurt city center without worrying about making it back by a specific time.

There’s a hotel located directly inside the airport called MY CLOUD Transit Hotel. This is a good option for those who either don’t have enough time or the desire to go out and explore the city of Frankfurt but would still like to have the privacy of their own room to relax.

The compact rooms have queen-sized beds, modern bathrooms, air-conditioning, flat screen TVs, and some even have views of the runway. Click here to book a room in this Frankfurt Airport Hotel.

If you want to stay outside of the airport, you’ll find plenty of options in the surrounding area.  Many have direct access to the airport via walkways, while many others are just a 5- to 10-minute walk away.

Here are some of our top suggestions:

  • Hilton Garden Inn – World class hotel chain with direct access to Terminal 1 by skywalk
  • Holiday Inn Frankfurt Airport – Great value hotel located 10 minutes away from Terminal 2
  • Steigenberger Airport Hotel Frankfurt – Business hotel with modern amenities and complimentary 24-hour airport shuttle

Check out our complete guide of the best hotels near Frankfurt International Airport.

The old city fortress walls and towers are still intact and surround the entire historic inner Rothenburg. Restaurants and hotels galore there’s days worth of exploring to do. My wife and I are spending 4 days in an AirBnB there in December for the Christmas markets. Beautiful fun, historic, cultural and delicious food! Must for anyone visiting Germany! This route has changed dramatically since April 2019 687456029 Let me start by noting that Touring Tours & Travel no longer manages the Romantic Road Bus/Coach (either the schedule or the guides). Since April 2019, the Romantic Road Coach has a new schedule (with a departure from Frankfurt on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 9am). • carleneo43 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Beware of Romantic Road Tour! My colleague and I were very disappointed in this tour, and quite, frankly, frightened by the driving on our return. Let me start by telling the story of our journey: We arrived at 7:44 a.m. at bus stop A4. There was no coach, there was no check in; we were confused. The departure was to be at 8:00 a.m. We called the 2 numbers on our reservation and received no answer. (+49-176 18687707 and +49-69-719126-268). We found 2 other tourists awaiting the same coach. We did not receive a text or e-mail advising of any delays. This caused quite a bit of stress as we'd already paid for our journey and were looking forward to a fun day of sightseeing. At LAST, the bus approached at 8:33. We thought, based on the information given in the inclusions, that an English Speaking guide would be on the coach. There was not an English speaking guide until we got to the main square in Rothenburg. The bus driver was not able to communicate with us. He dropped us at the bus stop and when we asked where the restaurant was he pointed up the street, but that street didn't have the same name as the address of the restaurant. We confirmed we needed to meet back at the same place he dropped us off at 4:50 for departure and he mentioned 4:30.. The lunch...not recommended, and it took a while to locate the restaurant, leaving less time to enjoy the city. We arrived back at the bus stop at 4:29 pm. We grabbed food from the restaurant there and waited, and waited, and waited for the bus. We figured, time wasn't too important since it was over 30 minutes late in the morning. We became very concerned after a delay of over 15 minutes, so we called the emergency # again. No answer. We saw a posting at the bus station and called that number. We were told we weren't AT the bus stop at the appointed time and we would have to wait until the next morning for pick up. WHAT? We were at the same place we were dropped off, and according to the paperwork, we should have been dropped off and picked up at the same station. After much discussion, the bus driver agreed to come pick us up IF we paid an extra 50 Euros! We already paid for transportation and the tour! THEN, 5 minutes later we received a call saying they would not return to pick us up. Talk about high stress and anxiety!! We needed to fly out the next morning! A call back to the bus driver confirmed he would be back in 30 minutes and we would need to pay the extra Euros. The bus DID come and the driver argued about the payment, I dumped out all change and cash, and offered 49 Euros plus American dollars to make up the difference. He then agreed to 35 Euros and signed the receipt I asked him to sign. Apparently, there is another bus stop the original driver should have dropped us at. Riding on the bus became very dangerous. The driver was recklessly driving at great speeds around the curving roads. We were concerned about other travelers on the road and ourselves. I believe we had divine intervention when, on a straight section of the road, a driver passed the bus...and slowed down once he passed to make the bus slow down. The car driver then stopped completely, causing the bus to slam on the breaks. The driver got out of his car and started yelling at the bus driver telling him to slow down...he asked for the drivers name and bus number. Then the car started driving at a reasonable speed, ensuring the bus did as well. The overall experience of this tour was HORRIBLE. I'd booked this through Veltra, and wrote an e-mail to Touring Tours and Travel at [email protected] and never received a response. I'd read reviews before booking and most of them were acceptable, with a few that were cautionary. Find another option if you want to enjoy your travels! Read more Written October 7, 2018

Rothenburg is well known for its well-preserved medieval walled town. The town is surrounded by wall and awesome Towers & gates at several locations. We can walk on this wall that surrounds the old town. The buildings are colourful and very beautiful. The whole town is very neat and it is really enjoyable to take a stroll here. We can slowly walk around the town, enjoying the many shops in the town. The whole town is simply picturesque and we should definitely make a trip here if we are in the vicinity. • Candice M 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Romantic road from frankfurt to munich via rothenburg We had organised transport from frankfurt travelling along the romantic road stopping at rothenburg for one night before boarding again the next day to finish in munich. The first day pick up the bus arrived late, about 10mins which wasn't much but we were starting to worry we were in the wrong spot. So by the time the bags were loaded and all tickets checked, may have put us abit behind schedule as they make 3 stops along the way to take a few snaps amd stretch ypur legs but some stops felt quite rushed. Its not a fully guided tour but there is someone on board to tell you how long you have at each spot etc, on the first day we had a , i think possibly romanian guide, the language barrier made it quite hard sometimes and lacked abit on his professionalism, stratching out, putting his feet up on the seats and reclining his seat fully back into a customer. The second day was much better. Different driver and guide and this was brilliant, we had a german guide who spoke english and he was very friendly and informative, sharing some german history with us. Overall a good way to see the area, the small towns and country side. Would recommend it but maybe just be prepared for those few type of things Read more Written May 21, 2018
  • isabel_stout 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Not for Me My friend and I booked Tour EB 605 from Munich to Frankfurt in September 2017. We found the tour on line and took it because it covered the cities that we wanted to see. This is a self help type of tour: you go to an address and find your bus to take you to the next destination at a specific time. In Munich we had difficulty finding our bus because Touring subcontracts with local operators and there was no one to clarify which tour we had to join. We were lucky that one of the other guides knew about Touring and could point us to the correct bus. In the next stop we were given our coupons at the hotel as expected but after that we were in the hands of the bus drivers who were often rude, short tempered and ultimately did not know where we were supposed to go. Some were even reluctant to help us with our luggage. In one location, we were supposed to get a local tour to visit the city but the tour did not exist. We wrote Touring requesting a reimbursement of that portion but we never heard from then. This is truly a ghost operation and suitable for travelers that do not need assistance. And if you get into a problem there is nobody that you can go to. I do not recommend the service. Read more Written March 1, 2018

We booked the bus again the following day from Nordlingen to Augsburg but it did not show and there was no reply to the telephone numbers on their brochure. When we arrived the bus stop to go to Hohenschwangau the bus didn't show up even though we wait there for hour and half!!! Ended up, we forced to stay same hotel we stayed last night. I have called the company so many times, but they never answer the phone and their emergency number was not working at all!!! Also, their site said that this tour was English guide tour, but there were personal guides or conductors. They handed you vouchars and need to do everything by yourself, and also, they just give a small audio guid(not really worth) to explain the cities. If we know that there was no personal tour conductors or guids, we would not join the tour at first place....I totally disappointed the results of this trip, yes there was a reason for the cheap trip. I am not recommend anyone to this company!! Please don't fall for the cheap price. Read more Written July 17, 2017
  • Cindi T 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to travel the Romantic Road in German We began our trip in Frankfurt (met the coach at 8am in front of the train station) & traveled to Rothenberg ob der Tauber for a 3-night stay. The ride was pleasant with lovely scenery & the coach was clean & comfortable. We stopped in a few quaint medieval villages for about 20 minutes so we could take photos or grab a snack. The driver gave us maps & little radios so we could listen (with our earphones) to the descriptions & history of the little villages interspersed with lively German music :) Following our stay in Rothenberg, we hopped back on the bus when it stopped in the afternoon & traveled to Munich, where we were staying for 3 more days. Along the way, we stopped for more little village visits (3 or 4 places). The coach no longer stops in Munich but instead drops us at Augsburg, where we use our ticket to get on the train (about 1/2 hour) to the main station in Munich. It was quite easy, but disconcerting at first. Here is something that impressed us: my husband had purchased a beer stein in Rothenburg, which he inadvertently left on the bus when we got off in Augsberg. He didn't realize until the next morning & emailed the Romantic Road Coach company. He received a reply within an hour. The driver had found the package (with the stein). They tried twice to get it to us while we were in Munich but each time, by happenstance, the attempts were fruitless. Instead, they kindly sent the package via DHL to our home in Michigan! My husband sent the shipping payment to the RR Coach Company via Paypal & it arrived safe & sound within a week of our arrival home. We were very impressed with their honesty and caring assistance and we enjoyed our carefree trip along the Romantic Road Read more Written July 10, 2017

1. Enjoy a meal

Airport Dining

2. Visit an airport lounge

Airport Lounges

4. Freshen up

showers

5. Get pampered

After you’ve freshened up with a shower, get pampered with a massage, facial, manicure, pedicure, or time at the oxygen bar. Be Relax Spa has three locations offering a range of spa services. A hairdresser inside Concourse C’s Airport City Mall Frankfurt is available for haircuts and styles.

6. Pilot a flight simulator

Have you ever wanted to pilot your own aircraft? The airport has a flight simulator that lets you take off and land a simulated plane at airports worldwide. The session costs €79, but you get instructions from an experienced commercial pilot – a pretty cool way to pass your layover at Frankfurt Airport!

7. Use the WiFi

Hop online to chat with friends or browse the internet – WiFi is free and unlimited.

8. Tour the airport

We know the flight simulator is a splurge – but the airport also offers several different airport tours that show the behind-the-scenes logistics and workings. Tours start at only €8 for a 45-minute experience, with additional tours that take you into the Fire Department or around the runways – these range from €15-25. Make a reservation or stop by the Airport Tours Shop in Terminal 1.

9. Sightseeing

Layover Sightseeing

Trains are your most efficient way to reach the city centre – head to the Frankfurt Airport Railway Station and purchase a round-trip train ticket to the city center. Many buses depart from the front of Terminal 1. Of course, taxis are ready and waiting if you want more direct service.

In the city center, head to Alstadt, the oldest part of the city with many sites reconstructed after World War 2. Romer, the main square, serves up iconic German architecture. Travellers will be surprised at the city’s gastronomy scene – head to Kleinmarkthalle (closed on Sundays) for local and fresh food. Along Grosse Bockenheimer Strasse (known locally as Fressgass), you’ll find a pedestrian street packed with street food ranging from German to Asian cuisine, plus many shops. Walk off all those calories with a stroll along the Main River – the peaceful river meanders past new skyscrapers and old architecture, showing off how quickly this city is developing. Or, opt for a popular 1-hour cruise along the river.

Be sure to leave enough time to return to the airport and process through Security before your next flight!
