We did our walking tour with Carl who was incredibly engaging. We learned so much about Ireland's and Dublin's history, language, and Culture in the space of three hours, through storytelling and his clever pneumonics. We're really pleased we got Carl as he is extremely knowledgeable and gave out excellent recommendations and was able to answer many of our questions. Top tier tour guide!

We had a tour wirh Carl and it was a really nice expérience. We learnt a lot of things about the city. I highly recommend

Free Walking Tour

My friend and i did the free walking tour with Wally and it was AMAZING. Hes such a funny guy and knows a looot about Dublin, history and Pubs. So many funny storys to remember!! Literally the crack is 90!!! Would recommend it to everyone who visit dublin. Thank you Wally!

John was fantastic and it was our favourite thing we did whilst in Dublin. He was so passionate and knowledgeable. I couldn't recommend any more highly.

This was the best tour we went on in Dublin! I have told all my friends and family about it since we came back. It was perfect. I loved all the information we got. If you want to learn about the dark side of history for Dublin this is the tour for you

My husband and I have been on several Sandeman Tours. Amsterdam, London, and a couple of times in Brussels so we are familiar with the process and types of tours we can get but after yesterday Adam is our new favorite tour guide! We started the morning with the free tour where he was entertaining, his stories were knowledgeable without being overwhelming, and he was funny. He ties in pop culture facts with historical facts so there is something for everyone. After the 2.5 hour tour my husband and I agreed it felt very quick and it was fun. And after all of that Adam is willing to answer questions, give suggestions, and even emails out a list of things to do in Dublin: places to eat, drink, where to hear music, etc. We filled the rest of the weekend with his suggestions and it was worth it. *Dark Tour* Later that day my husband and I went on the Dark Tour of Dublin. We had already signed up for it but we heard Adam was going to lead it so we had decided to brave the storm and go on the tour. Poor Adam stood in the rain and wind to tell his group about serial killers, grave robbers, and Halloween. It was a great tour with lots of cool, spooky things and it's nice he adjusted it so we wouldn't freeze or get rained on. I would definitely recommend someone do both because the tours don't overlap. Once again he tied it into personal stories, history, and literature so it was all interesting and fun. He is a great tour guide. Would 1000% reccomend to anyone who wants an overview of Dublin.

Absolute bargain! What an interesting and informative tour. Our tour guide John was very knowledgeable and provided lots of entertaining stories about the history of Dublin. It was a great way to see the city and learn more about the history. 11/10 would recommend highly.

It was a wonderful tour - mainly because of our tour guide, Ciarán Behan! He kept us interested and engaged throughout with interesting tid bits about the city, and was extremely well informed.

Had a tour from Carl that was really fun and well organized. Carl set out clear expectations for the tour, including length and food/bathroom stops. Learned A LOT and walked away with a list of other recommended stops for our visit. I HIGHLY recommend this tour, Carl specifically, if you are visiting Dublin.

My oldest daughter loves walking tours so she did some research and found this tour to be the best one offered. It's technically a free tour but you really should strongly tip your tour guide. They invest about two and a half hours educating and entertaining each group. We started our tour at City Hall and slowly worked our way around downtown. Lots of great tips and little extra bits of information were highlighted throughout our entire tour. Ciarin has a great sense of humor and was engaging. His willingness to have an interactive group made everything more interesting. I recommend taking the tour on the first or second day of your vacation so that you can double back and visit some of the suggested places.

John was a fantastic tour guide-- a great storyteller, funny, engaging. He brought the historic sites to life with his lively stories. Top notch tour!

My fourth Sandeman's New Europe tour, after Amsterdam, Edinburgh, Prague and Barcelona. And this one was just as good as the others. Three hours long with a brief stop in the middle for a cup of tea (or a beer). Lots of walking, lots of talking, and lots of Dublin to see. I think that I was quite lucky to have John as the tour guide today as he's got a good history here in Dublin and is even a Trinity College graduate. That was quite helpful as he pointed out the various sites and things to see as we walked around. Dublin Castle, Dubb Linn Garden, the famous Forty Steps, Temple Bar and more. Very nice. My *only* complaint is that the tour group was massive. Usually they break it down into smaller groups of 25 or 30. We had 50 at the start. That's too many.

I recently went on a Sandemans tour in Dublin. It was about 3 hours and we covered all the castles and cathedrals in Dublin as well as Trinity College. We also were given a tour of the Temple Bar area. Our host was a tall guy named Patrick. He was excellent. Very informative as well as funny. He made the trip memorable by telling history through humorous story telling. This guy would give a great Ted talk, IMO. Sandeman's does a lot of free tours where they cost nothing but you pay what you think the tour is worth. They also sell tickets to their evening pub crawl as well as excursions outside the city.

New Year's Eve of 2018 my best friend and I went on the Dublin walking tour with Jason! We had a fantastic time and it helped us get a lay of the land while learning a lot of great history. Great job Jason! We also did the New Years Bar Crawl (lots of fun and met loads of cool people, locals to other travelers) and the Dark Side of Dublin Tour which had a plenty of great material but our guide was a bit older and felt more like a college course tone than an immersive tour. Still recommend all of these tours.

I took a walking tour with Cathal last weekend and was surprised to hear he was new! He knew the city and history very well and made sure to put a funny spin on most stories and even taught us how to greet each other in Irish. I recommend the free walking tour if you're interested in learning more about the history of Dublin and Ireland and want to meet some fellow travelers. They walk you around city center, Dublin Castle, Temple Bar, and Trinity College. Then once you're done with the touristy places you can get actual local tips Just don't forget to tip!

For a free tour, you really can't complain. I also like that it's just three hours and covers some interesting history and a fair number of sites. Tours are given in Spanish and English. Look for the folks with the red umbrella. Now, if you have a soul, it's not really free. Sandemans doesn't pay the tour guides, so whatever you tip them is what they make. Still, it's cheaper than most other tours and you take away quite a bit of knowledge. They do a group photo at the beginning and e-mail it to you. I would have liked a little more walking and a little less time at each location. Our guide probably spent at least 10 minutes at each location, and no one really asked questions. Honestly, the tour is really more about history than actual sites. Anywho, you see Dublin Castle and learn about the eight or so pivotal moments in Irish history, which is actually really interesting because as a free country, they're relatively young. You also see the spot where U2 was discovered. You go to St. Stephen's Green and learn how Dublin got it's name (I'll let you take the tour to find out). There's a break in the middle where you can get tea or stop in a bar for 15 minutes. The guide makes sure to not leave without you. At the end of the day, I'd recommend this tour, especially if you're not doing any other tours in Dublin City Centre.

Wally was our walking tour of Dublin guide. He was fabulous. He was very knowledgeable about Dublin and imparted information in a fun way. The day was bitter cold complete with snow flurries at Maggie Malone's statue. And even with that this Florida girl had a great time! Great job Wally!

Photo of Jeneane B.

My husband and I were in Dublin for just one day as part of a cruise itinerary. We signed up for this tour, because it was so highly rated online. Unfortunately, this tour was not the tour for us. Of the 3-hour tour, we only stuck around for the first half, and we didn't see much in that time. We stayed for Dublin Castle and the walk to Christ Church Cathedral. During the first 20 minutes of the tour, the guide stood our group outside of Dublin Castle and talked about the tour itself (its purpose, structure, etc.) and about himself. We then spent about 15 minutes in the Castle, and learned a good bit about its history. After that we walked to the courtyard just across from the Castle for about 15 minutes more history. Our tour made its way up Swift Alley, where the guide spoke about its significance. The guide also spent a good bit of time talking about other sights that we could go see just a few hours away from Dublin. By this point, we were about 75 minutes in and realized that this was not the tour for us. We had "toured" very little and we were learning more about all the things that we wouldn't have time to do while in port for the day. Our group then walked to Christ Church Cathedral, which is a sight we were interested in seeing so we broke from the tour and walked off on our own. In short, this would have been a decent tour if we were going to be in Dublin for several days and had no idea yet what we wanted to do. But if you are in the city for just the day, find a tour that takes you to the sights instead of talking about the sights you should go see afterwards.

  • Smithfield : This district is home to the ‘Icon Factory’, an artist’s cooperative that turned the surrounding alleys into an outdoor gallery dubbed the ‘Icon Walk’.
  • Portobello : In this trendy neighbourhood, you’ll find a variety of thought-provoking murals and graffiti art, particularly around the Richmond Street area.
  • The Bernard Shaw : Although the famous pub has moved, its original location on South Richmond Street still boasts some of the city’s most iconic murals.

Remember, the beauty of street art lies in its transient nature. What you see today might be replaced by a new masterpiece tomorrow. So, each walking tour brings with it the excitement of discovering something new.

A walking tour exploring Dublin’s street art is a fantastic way to see the city from a different angle. It’s not just about the art, it’s about the stories they tell and the conversations they spark. So, why wait? Put on your comfy shoes and let Dublin’s streets surprise you with their colourful creativity. For more free activities, check out our list of  free attractions in Dublin .

  • Temple Bar Area  – Known as Dublin’s cultural quarter, this area is a hotbed of lively pubs, many offering live music sessions.
  • Grafton Street Area  – Home to a number of pubs known for their live music, including traditional Irish music sessions.
  • Camden Street Area  – This area is known for its modern and trendy bars, many of which showcase live rock and indie bands.

Tips for Enjoying Dublin Walking Tours

Getting the most out of  Dublin free walking tours  requires a bit of preparation. Here are some tips on what to wear and bring, the best times for walking tours, and some safety and etiquette tips.

What to Wear and Bring

Ireland’s weather can be a bit unpredictable, so it’s best to dress in layers, ready for all possibilities. Comfortable walking shoes are a must because you’ll be on your feet for a few hours. Don’t forget to bring a waterproof jacket or umbrella, just in case of a sudden downpour.

You should also bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated, and a snack could come in handy if you get peckish during the tour. A camera or your smartphone is essential for capturing the sights and memories.

Best Time for Walking Tours

Dublin’s charm can be appreciated at any time of day, but the best time for walking tours largely depends on the type of tour you’re interested in. Early morning tours are great for beating the crowds at popular landmarks, while evening tours can offer a magical view of the city under the twinkling lights.

The beauty of  Dublin free walking tours  is that they run throughout the day, so you can pick a time that suits your schedule. Just remember, some sights and attractions may have different opening hours, so it’s worth checking in advance.

Safety and Etiquette Tips

Dublin is generally a safe city, but as with any urban area, it’s important to stay alert and aware of your surroundings. Stick with your group and follow the guide’s instructions. Remember to respect the city and its inhabitants by not littering and keeping noise levels to a minimum, especially in residential areas.

When it comes to gratuities, while the tour is free, it’s customary to tip your guide if you enjoyed the tour. The amount is entirely up to you and should reflect your appreciation of the guide’s work.

Exploring Dublin on foot allows you to immerse yourself in the city’s rich history and vibrant culture. By following these tips, you’re sure to have a memorable and enjoyable experience. And remember, there’s plenty more to discover for free in Dublin, from  museums  to  art galleries , so don’t stop at the end of your walking tour!

What people say about us, southside dublin free walking tour.

Southside Tour with Peter was Fantastic. I am all about walking yours in towns and this was one of the best. It lasted about 3 hours, but I could have wandered around with Peter for a couple of more hours and not gotten bored. We got great general history of Ireland and insite to specific sites on the South Doubling tour. Highly recommend.

Absolutely recommend!

During my short trip to Dublin I decided to book a free walking tour with the Dublin Free Walking Tour – South Side. Our guide was Conor (with one ‘n’) who did a great job sharing bits of Ireland’s/Dublin’s history and present in a relatively short amount of time (one can learn a lot in 3 hours) and with some humour. I had lots of fun learning during this tour and I would 200% recommend anyone to book it. I’m sure you won’t regret it!

Great experience

Our tour lasted 2hr45 of the Southside, and was really excellent. Our tour guide gave us lots of information and was happy to answer questions, and was generally very friendly and easy to understand. It’s a contribution at the end as well, but nominally free. Would definitely recommend!

All you need to know within 2 hours

A great mixture between information, fact, cultural insights and first hand tips for pubs and restaurants. Would encourage everyone to go on a tour!

Must-do in Dublin

Had a fantastic South Side tour with Richie on Sunday morning. Very informative and funny, and we learned interesting history about Dublin. It’s three hours but time flies by! Highly recommend to anyone wanting to take a walking tour – best way to get your bearings plus learn about the buildings instead of just looking at them!

Interesting tour!

Very interesting tour about the history of the city of Dublin. Our guide Conor was dynamic and captivating! We recommend to discover the city at the beginning of your stay!

Informative and fun tours with a great guide

We did both the north and south side tours with Peter. He was absolutely fantastic and really knowledgeable, giving an insight into the city we never would have had walking round in our own. He was also really helpful in answering any questions and providing recommendations for the rest of our trip. Great experience and would definitely advise anyone visiting Dublin to book on to both tours.

Educational and fun. Highly recommended!

My hostel recommended this company to me. Incredibly knowledgeable guide for the free morning & afternoon walking tour (tour date 30.11.2021). Did not expect this level of knowledge and presentation skill from a free tour, but will definitely take a closer look at their normal tours next time I am in Dublin. I am sure they are fabulous too. Overall highly recommended!
