  • Global10069415565 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles TRIP OF THE YEAR FOR THE MOSIA FAMILY. As a Joburger myself, I never knew there's so much history in my city and to explore it with my children ( 10 year Boy and 5 year girl) was a trip of the year for us. They had so much fun aboard the bus and Mr Kenneth made sure we are safe at all time. He's driving is of world class level. Thank you to the ladies at Rosebank Mall who were super friendly when we bought tickets, they also escorted us to the bus. I'm so glad it was not full at all as my daughter gets very unsettled around crowds. Seeing the Mandela house and foundation was a blast for my boy, HE LOVES MANDELA TOO MUCH, HE'S DAD GETS JEALOUS AT TIMES😆😆. My princess cut our trip short when we got to Gold Reef City, her small haven, besides Home, we couldn't continue with our trip any further. But we are definitely coming back to finish it off. Thank you so much for such a great business that let's us explore our very own backyards( JOHANNESBURG). Read more Written May 2, 2024
  • Ian H 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Very Interesting Whilst not as good as it's Cape Town cousin, only because the scenery is plainer and there seems less to see, it's interesting and good to get your geography and sights organised, hard to get to locations to get on it, we had to walk around 1km to get to the Hilton, and were not able to get back to Sandton until after 4pm as there is only 1 bus back there (we took Uber as it was around 1pm), still quite interesting Read more Written May 1, 2024
  • 304sherrym 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles When arriving do this first… Best first thing to do when arriving in a new city! I love getting an overview of the city, orienting myself and learning some facts to understand the place. Joberg, or as I’ve also heard Jocie is beautiful. What surprised me was all the beautiful trees in the city, the kindness of people, the global influence of many prominent businesses, the music and at the heart of it is how Nelson Mandela was able to transform apartheid through peaceful demonstrations. Highly recommend when arriving taking the hop on hop off bus to understand the city. Thanks Josie! Read more Written April 24, 2024
  • Aleaha G 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Soweto tour for the win! We went on the regular hop on hop off bus which had nice views and was a great way to see the city, but we enjoyed the Soweto tour way more the guide was super entertaining and engaging and we felt safe the whole time, I think he told us to call him DC anywho he did a great job teaching us about Soweto we just wish we had more time in Soweto (we could have stayed and waited for the next bus) but next time we will just book the half day tour in Soweto…. As long as we get the same tour guide 😁 Read more Written April 24, 2024
  • Emma26Oxfordshire_UK 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent tour The tour was fab. Buses very clean and drivers helpful. Soweto tour was fascinating and our guide Mpoh was enthusiastic and extremely knowledgable- he made the whole trip much more interesting. We were worried about safety but were well looked after throughout the whole trip. The Apartheid Museum is a must - we were there over 3 hours and didn’t get to see everything. It’s a harrowing part of the history of SA but it’s important that people realise what happened - we learnt a lot. Read more Written April 24, 2024

  • Luke-n-LauraB 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Nice tour The sightseeing tours are always good ways to see a city and this is no different. Its good value and takes in a large proportion of the city. Unfortunately for us, places like the museum were closed (warned in advance of closures Mondays and Tuesdays) but there aren't many appetising stops versus some other cities. That said, it is still a lovely bustling city with a lot going on, just maybe more of a business location perhaps. The commentary was good too but occasionally would drop out as if it had lost reception or something. I would still recommend as a way to see the city. Read more Written March 26, 2024

  • KaiChoo 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Not bad A fun and easy way to get your bearings around Johannesburg. It’s cheap way to spend the day and the commentary about the sites were interesting. • scottmP9 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic experience and very professional staff I couldn't have hoped for a better tour around the main attractions of Johannesburg. City Sightseeing staff (both in the office and on the buses) are professional, courteous, caring and they make sure you know exactly what's going on at all times. Also, every bus I took arrived at the stop exactly on schedule, which must not be an easy feat in a massive city like Johannesburg. I hopped off to see Constitution Hill, the Apartheid Museum and took the Soweto tour. All of these were fascinating and definitely worth at least a couple of hours each. I enjoyed listening to the onboard commentary, full of interesting details and anecdotes and I felt the time flew by because of that. Finally, the City Sightseeing guides we had in Soweto were amazing too, providing enough background and personal reflections without overwhelming everyone. I would definitely recommend the red bus as the way to see and feel a lot of Johannesburg efficiently. Read more Written February 21, 2024

T T he open-top bus tours run all day, every day, with on-board commentary, 12 fascinating stops and easy access to all the attractions. If you don’t have the luxury of time to get through the 12 main stops we’ve identified a shortlist that are absolute musts for visitors. We think the following should not be missed…

The Carlton Centre where you’ll get to experience stunning panoramic views of Johannesburg and beyond. The spacious wraparound viewing deck is on the top floor of the 50-storey, 223m-high Carlton Centre, Africa's highest building.

If vintage cars and vehicles of all types are your thing, then you’ll be fascinated by the James Hall Museum of Transport , showcasing historic vehicles from ox-wagons, horse-drawn carriages, trams, trolleys and steam trains to Johannesburg’s very first car – a green 1900 Clement-Panhard.

You’ll be poignantly reminded of South Africa's turbulent past at the Apartheid Museum , where you’ll be taken through South Africa’s history of an oppressive state-sanctioned system, and the brave struggle to overthrow it.

If you want to delve into the beginnings of the human race, then the Origins Centre , at the University of the Witwatersrand, is the place to spend time. It’s child-friendly and explains our origins in an interesting and comprehensive way. Check out the bookshop and have a bite to eat at the great little cafe.

And, if that’s not exciting enough, there are still eight more stops to explore in bustling Johannesburg!

Want to explore some more? The Red bus company also takes guided tours into Soweto , Johannesburg's largest and most vibrant neighbourhood.

The Spring Loudoun County Farm Tour is May 18 and May 19. This year there will be free shuttle buses to take you to 30-plus Virginia farms opening to the public.

The Loudoun County Department of Economic Development, which organizes the yearly fall and spring farm tours said it got great feedback after piloting a “hop on hop off” shuttle bus during last fall’s tour on a much smaller scale.

The 20-passenger “hop on hop off” shuttle buses will pick up passengers at the Ashburn Metro station throughout the day and operate on a constant loop between the towns of Leesburg, Lovettsville and Hillsboro.

“From each of the towns, you’ll be able to pick up a smaller van and go on a guided tour of anywhere from three to four farm stops, without ever having to drive your car or having to navigate,” said Colleen Kardasz, assistant director at the Loudoun County Department of Economic Development.

Shuttle buses will be on a constant loop between farms from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

Farms that open to visitors are diverse, from llamas and alpacas, to those that produce honey, mushrooms and protein, as well as produce growers.

“You can go to two different garlic farms on the spring farm tour. You could go to Green Hills Nursery and learn about the tea that they are growing, and buy some green tea grown in Loudoun County. Brookfield Dairy Farm is on the tour, and they are one of the last remaining dairy farms in Loudoun. You can see their practices and also purchase some ice cream made with their dairy,” Kardasz said.

Buddy Rizer, executive director of Loudoun Economic Development, said the tour “serves as a testament to the incredible diversity of farms that call Loudoun County home.”

“Each farm offers a unique experience, reflecting the ingenuity, passion and dedication of our local farmers,” Rizer said.

Many farms will also have educational components on agricultural practices and sustainability initiatives.

Attendance for the farm tours is tough to gauge, since many farms don’t count visitors, but during the fall tour, one farm said it had 2,000 visitors, with most of the other farms recording between 200 and 500 visitors.

A list and a map of farms participating in this year’s Spring Loudoun County Farm Tour is online .

Video shows bus plunge off a bridge St. Petersburg, Russia, killing 7

May 10, 2024 / 8:06 PM EDT / CBS/AP

A bus swerved through traffic, veered off a bridge and plunged into a river on Friday in St. Petersburg, Russia's second-largest city, killing seven people, officials said.

The Investigative Committee, Russia's top criminal investigations body, reported the death toll. It did not state how many others were injured, but the emergencies ministry earlier said that six people removed from the bus were in critical or serious condition.

Russian news reports said there were 15 to 20 people on the city bus when it broke through a barrier and plunged into the Moika River in central St. Petersburg. Six of those who were onboard climbed out of the water on their own.

A surveillance video released by the Russian media showed the bus driving fast, making a sharp turn onto the bridge, swerving across lanes and colliding with another vehicle before breaking through the barrier and falling into the water.

One witness described bystanders jumping into the water to try to help rescue passengers.

"They just dove in with their clothes on and helped," she said in Russian.

Authorities in St. Petersburg said that the owner of the bus had been fined 23 times for various violations. Private companies run most of the city's bus services.

Review: The Big Bus Tour in New York City

I absolutely loved the Big Bus Tour in New York City. It’s the best way to go sightseeing in an open-top, hop-on hop-off, top-rated tour and explore the best New York attractions !

If this is your first-time visiting New York and you want to see all the top landmarks, this double-decker tour bus will take you there.

The Big Bus Tour in New York

You may be wondering if a hop-on hop-off bus is worth it. Absolutely, yes!

If you consider the time and money spent on transportation costs, waiting for buses, navigating the subway (which can be confusing for visitors), and getting from one point of interest to another, it is worth every dollar!

I had a great visit to New York City on Big Bus Tour. My goal was to show the city to some friends from Italy who were visiting the US for the first time.

Since we only had about two days to spend together, the hop-on hop-off was undoubtedly the best decision.

From our experience, we’ll answer commonly asked questions about the Hop-on Hop-off bus while visiting New York City.

Google Reviews

Why take the big bus tour in new york.

While seeing New York from the open-top deck of the double-decker bus, the city unfolded block by block with panoramic views from every angle.

As we traveled through the streets, the sights were unobstructed and new visual backdrops were revealed.

The towering skyscrapers and colorful billboards filled the air with excitement and as the cityscape continued to change, it gave a grand feeling to the experience.

I especially enjoyed being able to relax from the upper deck of the bus while taking in the energy of city scenes.

Because I also live in a large city, the rhythm felt familiar from the elevated vantage point .

Car horns were honking, crowds traversed through the streets and there was an endless hum of activity.

Best of all, the tour gave me the chance to interact with other travelers who were seeing New York while waiting for the tour to began.

We struck up conversations and exchanged stories, insights, and recommendations during our stay in New York.

How Much is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The regular price of an adult and child ticket is $60.00 and $50.00, respectively. However, you can use the link below for discounted fares.

How Long is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The round-trip New York City Big Bus Tour takes about two hours from start to finish.

The bus is the perfect solution for visitors worldwide because they offer pre-recorded audio narratives and translations in five languages — French, German, Spanish, Italian, and English.

Are There Toilets on the Big Bus

No. Unlike charter buses, you won’t travel long between stops. So the best thing to do is exit at a stop, find a public restroom, see an attraction, if desired, and then catch the next bus.

If you are not sure where to find one, ask a Big Bus guide on the street. The driver may also have some suggestions.

Charter buses come equipped with a bathroom because travel is expected to be for a much longer period.

How Does the Big Bus Tour Work in New York City

The tour offers three options for purchase — 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day.

When you decide the number of days of your tour and purchase your ticket, the clock starts when your ticket is scanned while boarding the bus for the first time.

The ticket is good for 24, 48, or 72 hours. So, if you have a 1-day ticket and board the bus at 11:00 AM on Monday, it can still be used until 11:00 AM on Tuesday.

We found a ton of touring options for sightseeing in New York.

Aside from the extended period, the 2 and 3-day tickets also offer discounted bike rentals.

The buses run every 20 minutes on average. However, the first stop at the M&M store can be a long wait during peak season.

You can exit or board at any of the designated stops as much as you want.

The only exclusion is the one-loop tour Night Tour which is a panoramic non-stop tour.

Where to Catch the Big Bus Tour in New York City

During the tour, the buses only stop at designated stops.

Your ticket is good for as long as the buses operate during the day and it may be used on both the red and blue routes.

When you board, make sure you get a hop-on hop-off New York bus route map!

Big Bus NYC Red Route

The red route sightseeing tour covers lower Manhattan and you’ll see many landmarks like St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Wall Street, the Chrysler Building, and General Grant’s Tomb.

You can catch a tour at any one of the following bus stops and you can get your tickets in advance of boarding.

1 – M&M’s World – 7th Ave & W 48th St (Outside M&M World & Majestic Deli)

2 – Times Square East – W 42nd St & Broadway (at Knickerbocker Hotel)

3 – Empire State Building / Korea Town – 5th Ave & W 32nd St (at CVS Pharmacy)

4 – Flatiron District – 5th Ave & W 23rd St (at Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop)

5 – SoHo – Broadway and Spring Street (at Nike Store)

6 – Chinatown / Little Italy – 100 Lafayette Street (near the corner at Walker St)

7 – Brooklyn Bridge – Park Row & Beekman St (across from 33 Park Row)

8 – Wall Street / Charging Bull – Broadway & Wall St (Southwest corner near Rector St)

9 – Statue of Liberty / Battery Park – State St and Bridge St (at Subway Entrance)

10 – Circle Line Sightseeing – 12th Ave & 40th St (opposite Pier 81)

11 – Times Square North – 7th Ave & W 50th St (at Majestic Deli)

Big Bus NYC Blue Route

The blue route covers upper Manhattan, and half of the ride is mostly views of Central Park. You can switch to the blue route at red stop #2.

We recommend changing routes at stop #11 (the Majestic Deli) where you can take a break and have a nice lunch.

12 – The Metropolitan Museum of Art – 5th Ave & E 83rd St (near 83rd St)

13 – Central Park Zoo – 5th Ave & E 66th St (opposite 845 5th Ave)

14 – Columbus Circle – Central Park & Columbus Circle (SW corner of Central Park)

Tips and Things to Know Before You Go

The bus has two levels, the upper level offers panoramic views of the city but be careful of overhanging traffic lights and trees. Don’t stand while the bus is in motion.

  • After you find a seat, check the audio to confirm it is working.
  • Snacks are allowed. Bring a frozen bottle of water and protein bites to keep you energized.
  • When on the upper deck, cover up with sunscreen to protect your skin on hot sunny days.
  • If you are a family of 3 or more, take seats across from one another so you’ll have views and photos from both sides of the bus.

Tourists were lined up at stop #1 at least an hour before departure and the line extended the entire block and rounded the corner.

We decided to see other points of interest and returned around 11:00 AM.

The wait to board the bus was about 20 minutes. It was a relaxing ride and there we saw so much!

By the time we reached stop #9, we were pumped and ready to exit the bus so that we could explore the city! And you probably will be too.

Here’s the secret sauce that really made the experience memorable. Exit at stop #9 and take a FREE ferry to Staten Island.

To see the Statue of Liberty, stand on the left side of the boat. When returning, stand on the right side.

Final Thoughts About the Big Bus Tour in New York City

Overall, the tour was a pleasant way to see New York city and when you are on the upper deck, you hardly notice the traffic.

Some other advantages of seeing the city by bus include:

  • Avoiding parking hassles. I mean, who actually drives in New York?!
  • Photo opportunities. With the open-top or large windows, you have excellent photo opportunities as you pass by iconic landmarks and cityscapes.
  • Comprehensive sightseeing of major landmarks and attractions within two hours.
  • You can get local recommendations from the guides who operate the bus.

I usually opt for a hop-on hop-off bus when I am short on time or to get my bearings in the city before deciding what to do.

Either way, when you take the tour bus, it doesn’t appear impossible to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Happy Travels!

Holocaust Remembrance Day: JFCS Holocaust Center gives ABC7 News a tour of the archives

Localish logo

SAN FRANCISCO -- Communities across the U.S. are remembering the atrocities of one of the worst acts of genocide in modern history for Holocaust Remembrance Day. But for the Jewish Family and Children's Services Holocaust Center in San Francisco, teaching the history of those events is what they do everyday.

"Each one of these gray boxes holds a story. One family's life, one story of perpetration of dehumanization, but also stories of survival and stories of hope and resilience," said Morgan Blum Schneider Director of the Jewish Family and Children's Services Holocaust Center.

The JFCS Holocaust Center is dedicated to learning, educating, researching and remembering the horrors of the Holocaust.

Inside each gray box are impeccably preserved artifacts keeping the history of the millions of Jews killed in the Holocaust alive today.

"This is a Star of David that the Jews in the Netherlands had to wear sewn onto their clothing," Blum Schneider showed ABC7 News. "Every child over the age of five had to have a star affixed to their jacket."

Blum Schneider and her colleagues use these items to help teachers teach and students learn about the Holocaust - reaching more than 100,000 people in schools each year.

Sharing these personal stories of persecution and survival is so important as the world marks nearly 80 years since the end of World War II.

"Our Holocaust survivor generation is sunsetting. We are on the horizon of a time when first hand witnesses of the Holocaust will no longer be alive," said Blum Schneider.

The average age of Holocaust survivors is now upwards of 85-years-old.

But many of those survivors are not slowing down - sharing their stories of resilience in classrooms across California at a time when acts of antisemitism are on a drastic rise, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

"Holocaust education is anti-Semitism education," said Blum Schneider. "A truly dynamic curriculum includes survivor testimony. It includes primary source documents, it includes activities that really help the students investigate and build their critical thinking skills."
