Charlyn Marie Marshall better known by her stage name Cat Power is an experimental indie rock artist from Atlanta, Georgia.
Cat Power could be said to have music in her veins, her father Charlie Marshall was a blues musician and pianist. However due to her parents divorcing and her stepfather having a job that demanded a lot of travel, Charlyn attended ten schools throughout the Southern United States. She was not allowed to purchase records as a child, yet she was permitted to listen to her step father's collection which including Otis Redding and The Rolling Stones.
At the age of 20, Marshall escaped the unpredictability of her family to start a new life in New York and pursue her love of music. Introduced to the free-jazz and experimental scene by Glen Thrasher, Charlyn channeled her inspirations into simultaneously recording her first two albums under the name Cat Power. The singer has however later stated that she classes 1996 release 'Myra Lee' as her official debut, its predecessor 'Dear Sir' is more of an EP due to its short length. Her lack of commercial success never phased Charlyn during the early years, in an early interview she stated: "I never saw recording as an objective because I never sold any records when I started touring and playing shows, I thought, ‘I can play this show and make the same amount of money I would by working two or three jobs'".
Despite then signing to Matador Records and releasing her third album, a year later Cat Power decided to retire from the industry and retire to Portland, Oregon. However after suffering a hypnogogic nightmare in 1998 whilst living alone, she found this to be the main inspiration for her fourth release 'Moon Pix'. In the early 2000's, Marshall developed a heavy drinking problem which affected her live performance, the New Yorker scathingly stating "It is foolhardy to describe a Cat Power event as a concert". Her relationship with model Dan Curry broke down at the height of her addiction, and she claims he is 'the ex-love of her life'.
After taking some time away from the industry, Marshall re-emerged in 2003 and toured the world with her fifth album and this became the grounds for her most successful release 'The Greatest' which made Charlyn Marshall the first woman ever to win the Shortlist Music Prize. Her next original release came in 2012 in the form of 'Sun', which is her most commercially successful album to date yet is also hailed for it's passionate combination of power pop and electro. Now a hugely respected and celebrated artist, Cat Power has put her troubled past behind and amazes crowds worldwide.
Live reviews
This is the first time I have seen Cat Power perform live. It was the most memorable and inspirational performance I have ever experienced.
Chan Marshall performed solo. She seemed strangely uncomfortable chatting with the audience and appeared to find it difficult to articulate her thoughts. This was in stark contrast to the effortless clarity of her vocals - the repeated transition was captivating.
Every song was stripped bare, including an almost unrecognisable version of Silent Machine. The entire performance was remarkable and it's intensity almost heart-braking at times. It is rare to experience an artist singing for their own sake as much as to reach the audience. Occasionally it felt like the crowd were intruding, like the songs momentarily became a cry for help from their apparently triumphant place of empathy and understanding. Such a selfless and deep personal commitment to music as a means of communicating is an inspiration. There was nothing fake or shallow here; only a fearless desire to express and connect.
I would strongly recommend that anyone with an interest in music see Chan Marshall perform live. It will transform your appreciation of her recorded work and it will be an experience that may actually change your life.

Chan Marshall, AKA Cat Power, is one of my favorite artists. I have seen her live multiple times and have never left feeling disappointed. She has a tremendous stage presence, alternating between a quiet, melodic whisper, and a fireball of energy.
I first saw her after the release of "You Are Free" in 2003. I loved the album but I was not sure what kind of concert she would give. Little did I know that I would love her live show more than I loved the album. She sang her heart out on stage for over two hours at a small venue in Lexington, KY, and made me fall in love with her.
Her performance was simple, with no major props on stage, but all eyes were glued to her and she belted out almost every song on the new album, plus several that I assumed were from her previous releases.
I have made it a point to go to every show of hers that is within driving distance since that first show. Her shows after the release of "The Greatest" were calmer and more subdued, which focused more on her beautiful voice and musical skills.
Cat Power is, easily, one of the best female rock acts performing at the moment. If you’re a fan of indie rock, you have to do yourself a favor and catch at least one of her shows. You will not leave dissatisfied.
Charlyn Marie Marshall better known by her stage name Cat Power has had a turbulent personal life yet these experiences appear to have fuelled the emotive material of her albums. After taking a short time away from the live circuit after facing her drinking demons head on, she now performs with an indescribable sophistication as she weaves the sonar structure of new album 'Sun'. It is without a doubt her most commercial and critical successful release in a number of years and this approval seems to have gifted Cat Power with a renewed confidence onstage.
The electro tones of the music keeps the pace a lot easier than the slower guitar led tracks and the audience seem consistently engaged. She is a very honest artist and talks about her past experiences without fear of judgement. As many Cat Power fans will have followed her for many years, they will understand what she has been through and seem even prouder to see her performing to full capacity on 'Cherokee' and 'Ruin'. It would seem Charlyn is still a relatively under appreciated artist yet with an expanding following and discography that will last the time, it is an exciting time for her.
I've been a fan since What Would The Community, she has a special place in my heart because I shared her music with a few people I loved. So, after reading a lot of negative reviews about her previous concerts I was a bit scared of being disappointed. Luckily the concert was one of the best I did this year, including with Sufjan Stevens. She chained songs after songs, some old, some new, all beautiful. A guitar, a piano, and her amazing voice was plenty. When she felt strong enough, she shared sweet stories about her motherhood, drinking tea. It's not easy to sing along because she's changing rhythm and sometimes lyrics, but I really didn't mind. I let out some sighs of pleasure and nostalgia. The audience was super nice as well, we sheered up a lot for her, and she was very sweet and simple. No encore. After two hours, she just said goodbye, got down from the stage, shook some hands, and left.
This was the second time that I've seen Cat Power at the Roseland. The first time, I sat in the balcony. It was a disappointing show, given that you could hardly hear the vocals. A number of times, the artist had to motion to the sound person to up the levels. This time, I watched from the floor and it couldn't have been a more different experience. It was transcendent. Just a great performance all around. Wonderful song choices, and the lighting promoted the atmosphere. The band was tighter than I remember them being the last time I saw them. I wish that it could have gone on all night.
An amazing performance by Chan Marshall and her band! Chan sounded incredible and her band was just awesome. The show was very uplifting even though the material is dark and haunting. I have waited 20 years to see Cat Power, and was way beyond my expectations. There were several times where I was giddy with excitement and shivers running up and down my spine. Her stage presence was huge, and if I ever get a chance to see her again, I'll be a lucky guy!
I don’t see the point of going to a concert where the main singer is kept in total darkness the entire show, l, has a fit about cockroaches (what the hell was that) and leaves as soon as she’s finished with her set. I had hope, it was my 3rd time “seeing” her, but there won’t be a 4th. I am sure that there are fans out there who find her shows brilliant, for the others be warned, there won’t be a show.
Churches are a wonderful setting for Cat Power. Performing alone, she returned to a lot of her older songs and put on a very melancholy show, though cheered everybody up in a finale of whispered ramblings.
For a solo performance it's lovely to see Cat Power in tiny venues. At St John's in Hackney, I left wishing she'd brought a band and played the more cheerful songs she's been writing lately.
One never knows quite what to expect at a Cat Power gig but tonight at the Roundhouse she was wonderful; relaxed and clearly enjoying herself in front of an adoring crowd. Her warm, smokey voice seems to get even better with age if that’s possible.
Oh. And a shout out to the very lovely woman from Glasgow who saw CP at King Tuts all those years ago.
Maybe it’s just me, but I found it disappointing. Not once did I get carried away by the performance or atmosphere. Her sung words were quite indistinguishable and 2 or 3 times the resonance of the guitar with the speaker or something made the sound simply unbearable. Fortunately, the lovely summer evening made me forget it all quickly.

Cat Power Covers Ryan Gosling’s Band, Dead Man’s Bones
- By Larisha Paul
Larisha Paul
Cat Power has dropped the Greg Hunt-directed music video for her take on Dead Man’s Bones’ “Pa Pa Power” ahead of the Jan. 14 release of her forthcoming Covers album. The band features Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields.
Although she’s previously shared a taste of the album with covers of Frank Ocean’s “Bad Religion” and the Pogues’ “A Pair of Brown Eyes,” “Pa Pa Power” is the first song to be accompanied by an official visual.
Cat Power has been performing the Dead Man’s Bones track since 2012. As she said in a statement, her “Pa Pa Power” cover originally took on a more dissonant and spaced-out form when she started to perform it during the Occupy Wall Street protests.
“Occupy was bunkering down and saying, ‘This shit’s fucking fucked up.’ And helping citizens be a voice in their local government. They got a lot of good things done, but the American media killed the movement. I felt like this song was relative to that,” she explained. “The American media has always penalized any sort of social progressiveness and is always the first to express conservative rhetoric against something that is beneficial to the nation. I’d open with this song on the 2013 China tour. ‘Burn the streets, burn the cars.’”
Power is heading back out on the road following the release of Covers in January with a 32-date US tour.

“I started playing this solo in 2012 (originally more dissonant and trance-y), when the Occupy Wall street protests were going on. Occupy was bunkering down and saying, ‘This shit's fucking fucked up.’ And helping citizens be a voice in their local government. They got a lot of good things done, but the American media killed the movement. I felt like this song was relative to that. The American media has always penalized any sort of social progressiveness and is always the first to express conservative rhetoric against something that is beneficial to the nation. I’d open with this song on the 2013 China tour. ‘Burn the streets, burn the cars.’”
Covers is out January 14 via Domino and also features the prviously shared cover of Frank Ocean's "Bad Religion" plus songs by Nick Cave, Iggy Pop, The Replacements, Billie Holiday, Lana Del Rey, and more.

Chan Marshall — a.k.a Cat Power — is one of the most distinctive singers of her generation, emerging from the indie-rock scene of the early ‘90s to become a unique artist fusing a multitude of styles that range from rock to folk to low-key soul, in a long string of albums that alternate between originals and covers.
Popular on Variety
Variety caught up with Marshall two days after the Carnegie Hall show and discussed the album, its inspiration and her history with his music, and the times she’s met the man himself — as well as some tidbits about the album she’s currently working on — in a wide-ranging conversation. An edited transcript appears below.
How have the shows been going?
Every one’s different, you know? There’s different emotions that pop out, and you never know which song is going to be a grand slam or which one’s going to be a total stinker. So it’s hit or miss, but it feels generally good, because I can tell that people are genuinely happy to be there.
I definitely did not hear any stinkers at Carnegie Hall the other night.
I’m very honest with what I do!
How exactly did this project came about? When you got the offer to play the Royal Albert Hall, how did that lead to covering the live album that people thought for years was recorded there, but was actually recorded in Manchester?
Well, the point was to bring that show there. I had never set foot in [the Royal Albert Hall before], and to have an opportunity to play that venue, after being a young, heart-filled 20-year-old madly in love with the artist and his craft. When I saw “Don’t Look Back”… you know, to get an offer to play inside that building, of course, I want to play that record. I wasn’t even going to record [the show] initially, so to be able to record it, release it and all of a sudden have a tour, I’m so grateful.
Did you see a lot of similarities between that venue and Carnegie Hall? They’re both very stately and legendary theaters.
I had sung twice before at Carnegie Hall, once for a David Bowie memorial concert and another when Patti Smith’s daughter, Jessie Paris Smith, [staged a 2017 benefit for her foundation] Pathways to Paris, when Trump removed America from the Paris Agreement for climate change. So I knew how it felt to play there — and I actually don’t believe I even looked up either of those times [due to nervousness], I just did my work and left! But this time was different, obviously. I kept thinking of Billie Holiday — she sold out Carnegie Hall 22 times, and she sang covers all the time herself. So to be able to sing Bob Dylan’s songs there made me very emotional.
Your band’s musical arrangements in those songs are very faithful, but you seem to find new melodies in them. How does that happen?
Because I’ve been singing a lot of these songs since I was little — I’ve been singing harmonies with all the greats since I was, like, four years old. So I’m still doing the same harmonies I used to do, but Bob’s not singing. That’s basically why the vocal melodies are different.
That’s really interesting — it’s like you’re harmonizing with him but he’s not there.
Right — you can’t hear [Dylan’s] recording, but I can.
I’d like to offer a gentle, graceful, respectful presentation of these songs — we don’t have to fight to sing them like he did, you know, with people booing him and shit, even though we might be on the same page about what the lyrics make us feel and the personal anger we may have against society with these songs, but we feel empowered enough to have an open conversation about them. But that’s why it’s not, you know, all punk rock [arrangements], like “We gotta hammer them!”
But I also wanted to offer grace and dignity to the songs, because Bob’s still on the planet with us. I saw him in Glasgow three nights before [she recorded her Royal Albert Hall concert], and I can tell you it was the most beautiful I have ever heard his voice.
When did you first hear Dylan’s music? Did it come from your family or did you find it yourself?
It came from my mom and stepdad. My grandmother raised me till I was about five — I was very sick when I was born, I was in an incubator, but I made it, and she took me to her house. I learned to read very young, when I was three, because she would read the Bible every night before bed, I would follow her finger and listen to her say the words. She’d start cooking and say [thick Georgia accent], “Oh Charlyn, why don’t you go to the record player and get that Johnny Cash record, ‘Jackson,’ would you play that, honey?” Or “Oh, Charlyn, get that Elvis Presley record and put that ‘Blue Moon’ on,” or “Go get that ‘I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry’ Hank [Williams] record.” So I was already, like, working in music [laughter] very young. It was so fun, she taught me to cook and we’d sing the songs together. I loved her, she was like my mom.
But then one day my [actual] mom came to the front door, “Hi, baby,” and went past me, ran her fingers through my hair, and went back into my grandma’s bedroom. And I was like, holy shit, I’ll bet that’s my mom. My life was forever changed from that moment. I moved into a funk band’s apartment where she was living — Mother’s Finest. This was the mid-‘70s, she was young, and there was that lifestyle. There were a lot of people around all the time, a lot of parties, a lot of bands, a lot of DJs, guitar players, afros, disco, people stoned, with all these children running around. And there were records, records, records, records, records, all kinds of music on all the time.
Do you find that you’re discovering new things in his songs as you interpret them?
I get asked a lot what’s the most difficult song to sing, or what’s my favorite. It’s “Mr. Tambourine Man,” because it reminds me of a sort of fuzzy memory of childhood, where you were free in your imagination. But it also is the hardest song and most emotional song for me to sing because it is a testament to having faith in a fucked-up world. And then I was thinking that “Imagine” by John Lennon feels like the nail in the coffin, where the faith is lost, and we can only have hope now.
But new things? No, it’s still the same, this classic, frozen moment in time. I just find a more visual enunciation, because I’ve never really sung all the songs before. When I sing “Visions of Johanna,” I see this Joan of Arc type of woman, mythical to his wish: “If only if only there could be someone that would come into my life, who speaks my language, who can be down with people, who I can make love with and be happy and fun and friendly?,” a cool chick that he could fall in love with and there wouldn’t be any games and just be really genuine and true. That’s just my personal translation — we all have our own interpretations of what Bob’s songs mean to us.
Have you met him?
Of course! I met him in 2007 in Paris. I was going to be flown [for a photo shoot] by this French luxury fashion [brand], and my stipulation was if they’d get me tickets to see Bob and meet him. And when I met him, it was me and him and [ disgraced “Rosemary’s Baby”/”Chinatown” director] Roman Polanski — I had seen him on the way and grabbed him and said, “Bob would really want to see you again.”
Anyway, since I was like 22, I had been asking [Dylan’s manager] if I could open for him, but I never got to. This was years later, Bob walks up, [nasal imitation], “Hey man, how you doin’? Where you livin’ now? You’re lookin’ fine!” And Roman’s so sweet, he’s the kindest man. So then Bob shuffles up, face to face, looking at my feet, and his eyes slowly go up to my eyes and he says, “I got all your calls” [about opening for him] (laughter). But the rest of it was just what are you doing here, are you recording, is your band with you — it was like meeting an old friend.
What’s coming up next for you?
I’m halfway done with my next album. It’s called “Opus.”
What’s it like?
Oh, it’s sad, it’s really sad. I haven’t figured out what’s going to be yet, but it’s going to be really, you know, typical Cat Power: sad but triumphant, anthemic, beautiful.
Who are you working with?
Me — it’s all Chan.
Entirely solo?
Yeah, entirely. Well, right now. I can’t speak any more on it because I have to do the next step, which is the other half, which is a different something. I’ll just say it’s something I’ve never done before.

“Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall” tour will make a stop in central Pa. this fall.
Cat Power is the stage name of singer/songwriter Chan Marshall. The show re-creates “one of the most fabled and transformative live sets of all time” by Bob Dylan at Manchester Free Trade Hall in May 1966, but known as the Royal Albert Hall concert.
The concert will be staged at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, 2024, at American Music Theatre in Lancaster.
Tickets go on sale on Friday, May 3, for prices ranging from $49 to $79.
“... the original performance saw Bob Dylan switching from acoustic to electric midway through the show, drawing ire from an audience of folk purists and forever altering the course of rock-and-roll. In her own rendition of that historic night, the artist otherwise known as Chan Marshall inhabited each song with equal parts conviction and grace and a palpable sense of protectiveness, ultimately transposing the anarchic tension of Dylan’s set with a warm and luminous joy.
“Now captured on the live album ‘Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert,’ Marshall’s spellbinding performance both lovingly honors her hero’s imprint on history and brings a stunning new vitality to many of his most revered songs.”
Cat Power also will perform on Sept. 7 at Ulster Performing Arts Center in Kingston, New York; and Sept. 18 at The Columbus Athenaeum in Columbus, Ohio.
Other upcoming shows at American Music Theatre include:
May 4 - The Temptations and The Four Tops
May 10 - An Evening with David Foster and Katharine McPHee
May 19 - Kevin James, “Owls Don’t Walk”
May 31 - 38 Special
June 26 - Kenny G
June 27 - The Wallflowers
July 11 - Amos Lee
July 14 - Asia
July 21 - Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons
