About The Place: The main draw for tourists coming to Dwarka, the Dwarkadhish Temple (Jagat Mandir), is believed to have been established more than 2500 years ago by Lord Krishna’s great grandson, Vajranabh. The ancient temple has been renovated several times, especially leaving imprints of 16th and 19th centuries. The temple stands on a small hill accessed by 50 plus steps, with heavily sculptured walls that cocoon the sanctum with the main Krishna idol. Around the complex lie other smaller shrines. The walls have intricately carved mythical characters and legends. The impressive 43 m high spire is topped with a flag made from 52 yards of cloth that flutters in the soft breeze from the Arabian Sea behind the temple. There are two doors (swarg and moksh) for the entry and exit of the temple. A bridge called Sudama Setu (7am–1pm, 4–7.30pm) at the base of the temple takes one across the Gomti creek towards the beach.

Brief History: Dwarka on the western tip of the Kathiawar Peninsula is clubbed with the holiest sites in India – the Char Dhams that include Badrinath, Puri and Rameshwaram. It is believed that Lord Krishna arrived here from Braj in Uttar Pradesh to build the city. The temple was established by his grandson. It is at the cusp of the Gomti River and the Arabian Sea, providing a scenic backdrop to the spiritual site. It is said that Dwarka was submerged under the sea six times and what we see now is its seventh avatar. The temple itself has a fascinating legend. The original structure was destroyed by Mahmud Begada in 1472, and subsequently rebuilt in the 15th-16th century. It was also feted by Adi Shankaracharya, the 8th century Hindu theologian and philosopher.

Best time to visit: The best time to visit is between November and February, and during Janmashtami which is celebrated grandly here.

Dwarkadhish Temple also known as the Jagat Mandir, is a Chalukya styled architecture, dedicated to Lord Krishna. The town of Dwarka has its history dated back to the Kingdom of Dwaraka in Mahabharata. The five storied main shrine is grand and marvelous in itself constructed of limestone and sand.

Sudama Setu Bridge is a stunning suspension bridge built for pedestrians to cross River Gomti. The bridge was named after Sudhama, Lord Krishna's childhood friend. It was inaugurated by Anandiben Patel, the CM of Gujarat in 2016.

Situated around 30 km from the main town of Dwarka, Beyt Island is a small island which was the main port in the region before the development of Okha. This magnificent, towering 5 storied building is said to be constructed by Lord Krishna’s grandson, Vajranabha over Lord Krishna’s residence. Along with being the 98th divya desam of Lord Vishnu it is also a part of the all India Chardham Yatra among other three yatra sites of Rameshwaram, Badrinath and Puri. Nestled between the main Dwarka town and coast of the ocean this is one of the most visited temples in India. The entire temple structure is adorned with intricately carved designs and structures complete with a gleaming black idol of the presiding deity.

Be sure to take a dip in the holy River Gomti before proceeding towards the temple.

Bhadkeshwar Mahadev Temple:

Situated on the edge of Dwarka atop a hillock amidst the shimmering blue Arabian seas, a visit to this Shaivite temple will definitely rejuvenate your sense from inside out. Built almost 5,000 years ago and dedicated to Lord Shiva the ethereal and gleaming beauty of this temple is unparalleled. Constructed by Jagadguru Shankaracharya on the confluence of rivers Gomti, Ganga and the Arabian Sea one of the unique features about this temple is the fact that the path leading up to the main shrine from the shore gets submerged under water during high tide of the sea during the months of June and July. When this phenomenon occurs the visit to the temple is completely cut off however, the well-made path during the ebb time makes the temple easily accessible.

It is also one of the 12 Swayambhu (self-existing) jyotirlingas in the entire world making it a vital pilgrimage site for Shaivites and Lord Shiva worshippers. One of the main features and top attractions of this temple is the giant 25 metres tall and extremely artistic Lord Shiva statue that adorns the place and mesmerizes the tourists and pilgrims. Situated between the main city of Dwarka and Beyt Dwarka Island on the coast of Saurashtra, this magnificent work of art is impossible to be missed out on. Beyt Dwarka :

This inhabited island located on the Gulf of Kutch is located at a comfortable distance of 3 km off the coast of Okha. According to history this sand and stone holy island has found its mention in epics like Mahabharata and Skanda purana as a part of Lord Krishna’s kingdom before it was flooded and submerged underwater. Remains of the lost city have been found by archeologists in recent ages. Numerous temples were built all over the island during the end of 18th century making it one of the prime pilgrimage spots in Gujarat. Some of the most highly revered pilgrimage sites include Shri Keshavraiji Temple, Hanuman Dandi, Vaishnav Mahaprabhuji Baithak, Sidi Bawa peer dargah, gurudwara, haji kirmani dargah among others. The island is accessible via a 15 minutes long ferry service and is also developed as a part of Gujarat’s eco-tourism plan.

Gomati Ghat :

Located on the mouth of River Gomti this holy ghat is situated inside the city of Dwarka. Devotees are expected to walk down 56 steps in order to reach the ghat and take a holy dip. This ghat holds immense religious and mythological significance. It is said that this river is the daughter of sage Vashishtha and her water carries powers which absolves all of the mortal sins. People come here to take a holy dip in the river water’s Gomti kund to cleanse themselves of all their sins. The Gomti kund is located close to the famous Gomati Sangam ghat in Dwarka. Pilgrims and devotees visiting this kund also pay a visit to the different shrines surrounding the area which are dedicated to Lord Krishna, Sudama, Lord Rama and Lord Shiva. Gopi Talav :

Located at a distance of 21 km north of Dwarka and 5 km from Nageshwara jyotirlinga mandir, Gopi Talav is a small tank/pond which is surrounded by yellow sand which is popularly known as Gopi Chandan. Upon their visit, the devotees put this Tilak Chandan on their foreheads and body during their visit here. From the ancient times it present day the Chandan produced in this area is still extremely smooth and yellow in outlook. This place holds immense significance in Hindu mythology for being the place where Lord Krishna used to entice the gopis. It is also believed that Lord Krishna had killed Bhaumasura (demon) and freed all the 16,000 princesses at this very site. This site is named after the princess Gopi, who had fallen in love with Lord Krishna and wished to marry him. This place is situated en route Beyt Dwarka and can be easily reached.

If you are planning a trip to Gujarat and especially the city of Dwarka, here are some new additions of activities and attractions that you can add to your must-do/visit bucket list.

Finding the Lost City

Where once Dwarka stood as a beacon of history and spirituality, legends of Krishna’s divine abode now whisper in the sea breeze, as the lost city rests beneath the azure waves of the Arabian Sea.

Amidst its spiritual charm, a new adventurous venture has emerged — India’s first submarine tourism initiative, with which visitors can explore the mystical depths of the sea, unveiling a vibrant marine ecosystem and the submerged relics believed to be remnants of Dwarka's legendary past.

The Gujarat Government, in collaboration with Mazgaon Dock Limited, is set to launch this underwater tourism project before Diwali this year at Beyt or Bet Dwarka, a small island located off the coast of Okha. The island is accessible via boat and is home to the Dwarkadhish Temple, believed to be the residence of Lord Krishna. The project involves a 35-tonne submarine that can accommodate up to 30 passengers, with seating for 24 passengers. Each passenger will have access to windows that offer an incredible view of the sea at depths ranging from 100 to 300 feet.

Bridge-ing the gap

Between the mainland and the island of Beyt, where waves of Arabian gently sway, spans a bridge connecting the dots, a missing piece of the puzzle in Gujarat’s latest marvels. 

In February 2024, the inauguration of Sudarshan Setu marked a historic moment as it became the country's longest cable bridge, seamlessly spanning the distance between Okha and Beyt Dwarka.

This 2.32 km engineering marvel facilitates smoother transportation for travellers and devotees, who earlier could only access the island town by boat during the daytime. The four-lane bridge also has solar panels installed on the upper portions of the sidewalk! It also has a pedestrian path which is embellished with verses of Bhagavad Gita and depictions of Lord Krishna.

Doll-up for dolphins

In the coastal town of Okha, where azure waters kiss the sky's embrace, awaits the graceful spectacle of dolphin dances, promising enchantment and grace.

From scuba diving at the blue flag beach of Shivrajpur to the turtle breeding centre at Okha-Madhi,  and witnessing dolphins and sea birds during the Sea Safari at Okha. Gujarat has a lot to offer when it comes to marine tourism.

When we talk about spotting dolphins in India, Gujarat is not the name that pops into our heads right away. But the coastal town of Okha is set to introduce cruise rides for tourists to observe dolphins in their natural habitats. The Gujarat government is set to introduce a submarine service for tourists in the state, to help them explore the marine life in Dwarka, an ancient city believed to be lost under the sea.

The state government has signed a memorandum with Mazgaon Dock shipbuilders for the project in the city, which holds cultural significance as the 'city of the Hindu God Lord Krishna'.

This will be the first underwater tourism facility in India through a submarine. As per the current plan, the government aims to operationalise the project before Diwali in October 2024.

Tourists will be taken to the sea near Dwarka by submarine, where they will comfortably see the underwater marine life.
