Hamadeh Palace

Visiting the Hamadeh Palace in the picturesque village of Baakline perched on Lebanon’s Shouf mountains is an unforgettable experience.

As you step over the threshold, Talaat Hamadeh, one of the palace’s inheritors and a descendant of the original family, immediately transports you back in time. As you listen to the sound of Talaat’s voice, you will stop to wonder whether he had been there first, back in the time of Maan princes, or if the intricate arches had first laid their foundations to one day accommodate, the most timeless, peaceful and elegant hosts you could encounter. (The Emir Fakhr-al-Din ibn Maan being the 1st prince of the State of Lebanon between the 17th and 19th centuries under the Ottoman Empire).

hamadeh-palace-lebanon-traveler

Talaat will then invite you to enter a sea blue walled room, bearing the portraits of the three members of the Hamadeh family who held the position of “Sheikh Akl”, the spiritual leader of the Druze sect. The room is flooded with an exquisite yet discreetly revealing light that unleashes visions of gathered elders discussing, over a cup of hot tea from the stove, matters of importance to the community. On the right side wall, a door, or more precisely an opening through thick walls, leads you to a surprise.

You will pause to decide if you are entering a real room or if Talaat is allowing you the privilege to see a reflection of the timeless personal space he inhabits. In here, Talaat has accumulated objects of the past and he smiles while watching you react to the story they tell our collective memory. Nested with other personal remembrances you thought were gone forever, an old radio awakens tunes of Oum Koulthoun’s Thursday night songs from their deep sleep. Although you were total strangers before entering this shrine to time he has painstakingly protected for years, Talaat has managed to connect with you.

hamadeh-palace-lebanon-traveler

Besides reception rooms that house objects collected from around the estate and portraits of the Hamadeh family, Talaat will eventually lead you into a long and slender room where supporting arches challenge each other to reflect skilled craftsmanship and a sense of strength, stability and security. He has ridden the walls of the arches of their inner coat and the stone appears to play with the light coming in from narrow windows on the sidewalls. Talaat has not yet decided what he wants to do with the room. He is thinking of transforming it into a museum showcasing more objects found on the estate. The room could easily be a venue for committee meetings, concerts or art installations.

Talaat will then lead you to the main entrance of the estate, passing through a paved way that dates back a few hundred years. The location of the rings, used to tie horses in the courtyard, are still visible. The entrance door with its metal inserts opens onto the internal reception courtyard where Talaat’s elders used to gather, seated on stone benches lining the sidewalls.

hamadeh-palace-lebanon-traveler

The visit will probably conclude with a cup of coffee in the courtyard surrounded by flourishing vegetation in summer, or with a cup of hot tea from the stove in Talaat’s office in winter. The door he opens for you is adorned with brightly colored patterns that were in fashion centuries ago. Talaat will take you on a trip through history and will tell you the story of these old stones that have survived time trapping him in their embrace. What a wonderful way to make the country’s history come alive.

Lebanon District Marks AGBU Centennial With Opening of Medical Center

Mrs. Rita Demirdjian (left), representing the AGBU Lebanon D

On November 7, 2006, AGBU Lebanon District inaugurated a new medical center in Antelias, in commemoration of AGBU’s 100th anniversary. With the opening of this facility and sponsorship of three cultural events this past fall, AGBU Lebanon revived the centennial spirit that was temporarily muted by the country’s 34-day war this past summer.

The medical center, outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment thanks to the generosity of the Al-Walid Bin Talal Humanitarian Foundation, will bring much-needed healthcare services to the region’s population, which includes a large Lebanese Armenian community.

Covered by national media, the ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by a number of distinguished guests, including Her Excellency Leila Solh-Hamadeh, Lebanon’s former Minister of Industry; the Mayor of Antelias, Eli Abu Jaoude; and members of the AGBU District, Education, Armenian Youth Association, Veterans, Women’s and Asbeds Committees were all also in attendance, along with a group of leading Armenian officials and educators.

After a warm welcome by AGBU leaders, Solh-Hamadeh, who performed the ceremonial ribbon cutting, was greeted by two young women in historic Armenian costumes offering the traditional Armenian greeting of bread and salt, along with flowers. Solh-Hamadeh expressed her appreciation to the Armenian community, especially AGBU, during her dedication speech. Highlighting the organization’s work for the Lebanese community in the fields of education and healthcare services, she commented, “Philanthropy is one of the most magnanimous human feelings and customs. I am glad that your organization is accomplishing this, bringing joy to many, for the past hundred years, here and elsewhere.”

As part of the opening ceremony, guests were offered tours of the facility and an opportunity to meet with the medical personnel.

Also in the month of November, to strengthen ties between the local community and its peers in Armenia, the Armenian Ambassador to Lebanon Vahan Ter Ghevondian (November 15, 2006) on the occasion of Armenian Independence and Yerevan State University’s Professor of Armenian Studies Samuel Mouradian (November 20, 2006) were invited to Beirut by the Lebanon District to participate in special gatherings.

Arizona Attorney General candidate Abe Hamadeh tours the Yuma sector border

hamadeh tours

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Arizona Attorney General candidate Abe Hamadeh toured the Yuma sector border Monday morning.

Yuma County Supervisor Jonathan Lines and Representative Tim Dunn showed Hamadeh the popular migrant crossing spots along with Doug Ducey's shipping container project.

While on the tour, Hamadeh was able to see several migrants cross into the United States and be apprehended by Yuma Sector Border Patrol.

He says securing the border will be one of his top priorities, if he wins the race for Arizona Attorney General.

Arizona Attorney General candidates spar during candidate debate

Democratic AG candidate Kris Mayes and Republican Abe Hamadeh

PHOENIX, Ariz. (KAWC) - Republican Abe Hamadeh and Democrat Kris Mayes do not enjoy a friendly rivalry in their battle for the Arizona’s Attorney General’s office.

The two have traded jabs, through the media, since the August primary.

Last night, they met face-to-face for the first time at the Arizona Clean Elections Commission Debate.

It didn’t take long for the sparring to begin.

Hamadeh took the first jab at Mayes’ qualifications...

“I’ve been a prosecutor, I’ve actually had to deal with victims, I put criminals away, but my opponent, she’s only been a professor of environmentalism, and a journalist, so I don’t think she has the legal experience she’s trying to claim,” he said.

And Mayes hit back:

“Again, he seems to not be listening, I was an Arizona Corporation Commissioner which is a judicial position. I decided 2,700 cases which his quite a bit more than the half dozen or dozen case you decided, or worked on, Abe, in the two years you worked at MCAO,” she said.

Hamadeh was a prosecutor with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

He’s also an Army reservist with an intelligence background.

On the issue of abortion, Hamadeh offered few insights into the reasoning behind his pro-life position.

Nor did he react to recent court rulings reverting the state to a pre-statehood statute practically banning the procedure.

Instead, he deferred to current AG Mark Brnovich.

“I currently agree with General Brnovich’s position that the law is the law. I don’t want to make the law, that’s the job of the legislature, I want to enforce the law, and I think that’s an important distinction between my opponent and myself.

Mayes said her opponent’s leaving out a big component of the job.

“Did he get that right?” asked a moderator.

“No, he got that completely wrong,” replied Mayes. “Unfortunately, Abe, you forgot to read the Arizona Constitution which is the highest law of Arizona, and the Arizona Constitution has within it, Article 2 Section 8, which is an express right to privacy.”

“But she’s using her personal beliefs...” Hamadeh interjected. “She’s trying to use the privacy clause of the Constitution; no legitimate lawyer thinks that.”

“I’m sorry that you’re confused about the Arizona Constitution Abe, I know you only graduated from law school a few years ago, but the Arizona Constitution says what it says,” responded Mayes.

The topic of the 2020 election also brought some verbal fisticuffs, beginning with a question from host Ted Simons about some of Hamadeh’s tweets:

“Regarding some Tweets you made...I’m gonna prosecute the crimes of the rigged 2020 election, I’m not gonna just forget about the crimes of the 2020 election, I’m gonna hold them accountable. Your day of reckoning is coming when I take office in January of 2023. What crimes? Who is going to be held accountable? Who will held to reckon? What are you talking about here?”

“All Arizonans want right now Ted is free, fair, and competent elections,” replied Hamaded. “The media has shifted the narrative from saying there was no fraud to saying there wasn’t enough fraud to overturn the elections.”

To which Mayes jabbed back:

“And it’s rhetoric like that that’s getting our elections officials into a situation where they’re the subject of intimidation, harassment, and even death threats.

Yet Hamadeh insisted fraud happened, even citing a local case in his argument.

“We’re already seeing prosecutions happening, I mean, just the other month this administration prosecuted the former San Luis mayor for ballot harvesting. So there are cases, there is an ongoing investigation too, Ted.”

In response, Mayes brought up an allegation about her opponent’s own voting integrity.

“You know, my opponent knows a few things about voter fraud since he admits casting his own mother’s ballot in the 2000’s,” she said.

Hamedeh does admit filling out his mother’s mail-in ballot for a candidate she didn’t support, but says that was long in the past.

“I think it’s ridiculous to suggest that what I do at 15 would somehow affect me when I’m attorney general.”

Which gave Mayes the chance to slip in one last uppercut.

“I spent 30 years as a Republican, Abe, just one year shy of the time you’ve been alive.”

The Clean Elections Commission has two more debates scheduled for next week. Republican state Treasurer Kimberly Yee faces off with Democratic challenger, state Representative Martin Quezada Monday at 5pm. US Senator Mark Kelly goes up against Republican Blake Master Thursday evening at six.

Abe Hamadeh must pay attorneys fees to Kris Mayes and Adrian Fontes, Arizona top court says

hamadeh tours

Arizona's top court on Tuesday ordered former Republican nominee for attorney general Abe Hamadeh to pay over $55,000 for attorneys representing Attorney General Kris Mayes and Secretary of State Adrian Fontes.

The order comes two months after the court effectively reprimanded Hamadeh's lawyers by rejecting Hamadeh's request that the court intervene in his case challenging his 280-vote loss to Mayes, a Democrat, in November.

Hamadeh in early August appealed to the Arizona Supreme Court, a move the court rarely takes, preferring cases to go through the typical process that begins with the state Court of Appeals.

The state's top court swiftly rejected the request, ordering Hamadeh to pay attorneys fees to Mayes and Fontes, though at the time it didn't put a dollar amount on what Hamadeh would have to pay. The court also chided Hamadeh's legal team for causing delays in the case and making misrepresentations to the court about prior rulings.

In a Tuesday order signed by Chief Justice Robert Brutinel, the court made clear how much those delays would cost Hamadeh and that Hamadeh's own actions drove up the costs.

The court ordered the former candidate to pay more than $42,000 for Mayes' attorney fees and nearly $13,000 for Fontes' attorney fees incurred related to Hamadeh's request to the Supreme Court.

"We are thankful that the court has correctly sanctioned Mr. Hamadeh and his attorneys," Mayes' campaign spokesperson DJ Quinlan said. "While he may have gotten in the habit of misleading voters, doing so with the court is never acceptable. For this, Mr. Hamadeh will face a stiff, but well-deserved penalty."

Hamadeh's legal team objected to the bills submitted by Mayes, saying they were excessive. Hamadeh's lawyers include former Assistant Attorney General Jennifer Wright, state lawmaker Alex Kolodin, R-Scottsdale, and longtime GOP lawyer Tim LaSota.

But in its Tuesday order, the court determined it was Hamadeh's petition "outside the parameters of an appeal that raised the stakes for the Contestee (Mayes) beyond simply asking for a final judgment." The court noted Hamadeh's request also prompted Republican legislative leaders to intervene and thus Mayes to incur more legal costs. Mayes was represented by the firm Perkins Coie.

The court also rejected Hamadeh's argument that an order to pay Fontes' legal fees was improper because Fontes was a nominal party to the case and his involvement was unnecessary. Fontes, a Democrat, was elected to be the state's chief elections officer in November.

It was Hamadeh's own allegations that "made the Secretary more than a 'nominal' defendant who need not be expected to remain silent to refute these allegations," Brutinel wrote. Fontes was represented in the case by the Phoenix firm Sherman & Howard.

A spokesperson for Fontes said the secretary of state was pleased with the court's decision and "we look forward to the resolution of this matter."

Hamadeh, meanwhile, didn't immediately comment, instead announcing his future political plans. He intends to run for an open House seat representing Arizona in Congress after Rep. Debbie Lesko, R-Ariz., announced Tuesday she would not seek reelection in the 8th Congressional District .
