Haridwar in Uttarakhand: Essential Travel Guide

What to Know when Visiting Holy Haridwar

haridwar video tourism

Exotica.im/Getty Images

Haridwar, "the Gateway to God", is one of the oldest living cities and one of the seven holiest places in India. (The others are Varanasi/Kashi , Kanchipuram, Ayodhya, Ujjain , Mathura, and Dwarka). Hindu gods are believed to have incarnated at these places various avatars. For Hindus, a pilgrimage to Haridwar will provide liberation from the endless cycle of death and rebirth.

The area around the Ganga River is made up of a fascinating and colorful collection of sadhus (holy men), pundits (Hindu priests), pilgrims, guides, and beggars. Every evening, the river comes alive with the magic of the aarti (worship with fire), as lamps are lit, prayers are offered, and small candles are floated down the river. A visit to this holy city will give you great insight into some of what makes India tick.

History and Mythology

Haridwar's long history can be traced all the way back to ancient Hindu texts such as the Rig Veda and The Mahabharata . During that time it was also referred to as Gangadwara, the gate of the Ganga River (where it descends from the mountains to the plains).

Hindu mythology says that a king named Bhagiratha brought the Ganga River to earth, with the help of Lord Shiva, to remove a curse and purify the ashes of his ancestors so they could go to heaven. Apparently, Lord Shiva released the river from his hair at Haridwar.

Sacred Har ki Pauri ghat is believed to have been built in the 1st century BC by Emperor Vikaramaditya in memory of his brother, Bharthari, who came to Haridwar to meditate by the river and passed away there. Legend has it that Lord Vishnu came and left his footprint on a stone wall at Har ki Pauri, giving rise to its name meaning "Footsteps of God".

Haridwar sits alongside the Ganga (Ganges) River near Rishikesh , at the base of the Shivalik mountain range in Uttarakhand.

How to Get There

Trains from major cities all over India stop at Haridwar on their way to Dehradun. For those coming from Delhi to Haridwar , it takes a minimum of four hours to get there by train or six hours by road.

The nearest airport is Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Haridwar. Travel time from the airport to Haridwar is about an hour. Expect to pay 1,500-2,000 rupees upwards for a private taxi, depending on the type of vehicle. Shubh Yatra Travels offers a reliable service that you can book in advance. Taxis are available at the airport. However, demand is high during peak season and drivers may quote inflated prices.

The best time to visit Haridwar is from October to March. Summers, from April to July, get very hot in Haridwar. Temperatures hover around 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). The clean water of the Ganges is really refreshing though, and May to June is regarded as peak season. The monsoon season , from July to September, is unsuitable to taking a dip in the Ganges as the river bank becomes unstable and currents are strong because of the rain. Winters, from November until February, get cold during the night. As a result, the water is chilly, but there's also mist in the air which makes Haridwar particularly scenic at that time of year.

The most famous festival to take place at Haridwar is the Kumbh Mela , held there once every 12 years. It draws tens of millions of pilgrims who come to bathe in the Ganges and be absolved of their sins. The next Kumbh Mela will be held in Haridwar in 2021.

In addition, many other religious Hindu festivals are celebrated in Haridwar. Some of the most popular ones are the Kanwar Mela (July or August) devoted to Lord Shiva, Somwati Amavasya (July), Ganga Dussehra (June), Kartik Poornima (November), and Baisakhi (April).

Haridwar's top attractions are its temples (particularly Mansa Devi temple , where the wish fulfilling goddess resides), ghats (steps leading down to the river), and Ganga River. Take a holy dip and cleanse your sins.

The city's iconic Ghanta Ghar (clock tower) at Har ki Pauri ghat was recently given a new look as part of the Haridwar Mural Project , which aims to explore unconventional canvases for public art. The project is being undertaken by art retailer Mojarto in association with Namami Gange (an initiative for the rejuvenation and preservation of the Ganga River). The painting of the clock tower, by artist Harshvardhan Kadam (who led the Pune Street Art Project), is based on the scriptures and theories of the Viman Shastra . It blends Indian mythology with contemporary art. Haridwar's new Chandi Ghat has also been decorated with a colorful turtle and ocean scene , painted by celebrated Mexican artist Senkoe. It signifies how the cleaning of the river and ghats is bringing wildlife back.

As the sun sets, head to Har ki Pauri ghat to witness the captivating Ganga Aarti (prayer ceremony) at around 6-7 p.m. every night depending on the time of year. Fiery lamps combined with the chanting of mantras , clanking of bells and enthusiastic crowd, is very powerful and moving.

Daksha Mahadev temple, the oldest temple in the area, also has some intriguing evening rituals. According to legend, Lord Shiva's first wife Sati jumped into the holy fire and died there, in response to her father spurning him.

If you're interested in Ayurvedic medicine , you'll find many roots and shrubs that are grown in the Himalayas readily available there.

Bara Bazaar, on Railway Road between Har ki Pauri and Upper Road, is a popular area to shop. It has all sorts of brass items, religious items, and Ayurvedic medicines. A bit further along, Moti Bazaar on Upper Road towards the north of the canal, is Haridwar's main market area. It offers a wide variety of inexpensive goods as well.

Where to Stay

Haridwar is quite spread out and hotels are all about location, location! There are plenty of options but you'll want to stay somewhere along the river to really enjoy and appreciate Haridwar. These Haridwar hotels for all budgets are all well-positioned and decent.

Where to Eat

The food in Haridwar is mostly vegetarian, and alcohol is banned in the city as it's a holy place.

Chotiwala, at Subhash Ghat, is renowned for its thalis (platters) . Bhagwati's Chhole Bhature, on the way to Mansa Devi Temple, is a popular breakfast joint for those who want to fill up on this iconic dish. Mohan Ji Puri Wale, near the police chowki at Har Ki Pauri, is the best place to go for aloo (potato) puri . The sweet ghee items at Mathura Walo ki Pracheen Dukan, near Thanda Kuan Moti Bazaar, always draw a crowd. Hoshiyar Puri, on Upper Road, serves yummy north Indian vegetarian cuisine at reasonable prices (the daal makhani and paneer masala are signature dishes). For somewhere more fancy, head to Ksheer Sagar at Pilibhit House, Ramghat.

Rajaji National Park offers unspoiled natural beauty only 10 kilometers (six miles) from Haridwar. Its eco-system is estimated to be 10 million years old, and a diverse range of wildlife can be seen there, including elephants.

Those keen to learn more about yoga and Ayurveda can visit Baba Ramdev's Patanjali Yogpreeth , at Bahadrabad near Haridwar. This interesting educational institution aims to link ancient wisdom with modern science.

Many people visit Rishikesh as a side trip as well. Although it's only less than an hour from Haridwar, the vibe is very different there. Haridwar is popular with Hindu pilgrims, who come to cleanse their sins. Rishikesh attracts foreigners who come to study yoga and spend time at its many ashrams.

"Gateway to God"

Haridwar tourism.

Haridwar is one of the seven holiest cities in India, situated in Uttarakhand. It is located where the sacred river Ganga enters the Indo-Gangetic plains for the first time. Dotted with temples, ashrams and narrow lanes across the city, Haridwar is a famous Hindu temple town where millions of devotees come to take a dip in the holy Ganges. It's believed that taking a dip in the sacred Har Ki Pauri relieves one of all the sins.

The highlight of Haridwar is the famous Ganga Aarti held at the Har ki Pauri Ghat every evening. Thousands of devotees come together to pray to river Ganga and float diyas. Haridwar is one of the four cities (others being Ujjain, Nasik and Allahabad) that host the Kumbh Mela every twelve years. The Kanwar Mela is also organised here every year during saawan  (rainy season). It is also the gateway to the Char Dham of Uttarakhand and acts as the base destination for some of the other tourist towns of Rishikesh and Devprayag. According to Hindu traditions, there are Panch Tirth (five pilgrimages) within Haridwar. These are Har ki Pauri ( Gangadwar ), Ghat ( Kushwart ), Kankhal, Mansa Devi Temple ( Bilwa Tirth ) and Chandi Devi Temple ( Neel Parvat ). Haridwar is also known globally for Ayurveda, meditation and yoga. Since it is a religious centre, alcohol and non-vegetarian food are not permitted here. The city is well connected by bus and trains but is especially busy during the yatra season from May to October.

History of Haridwar

Haridwar is a living example of one such historical city that hasn’t been erased by the tides of time. The city has been mentioned in several Hindu texts, scriptures, and books from the times of Buddha to the British invasion. It was ruled by the Maurya Empire (322-185 BCE), followed by the Kushan Empire (c. 1st-3rd centuries).

In the Archaeological surveys, it was found that terra cotta culture thrived in Haridwar between 1700 BCE and 1200 BCE. Haridwar also finds its mention in the travel journals of the famous ancient explorers. During King Harshavardhan's rule (590-647) when Chinese traveler, Hsuan Tsang visited India in 629 A.D., he cited Haridwar as ‘Mo-yu-lo’ and also mentioned that there was a temple called 'Gangadwara' which stood in the north of Mo-yu-lo.

During the reign of Emperor Jahangir (1596-1627) Thomas Coryat, an English traveler who visited the city mentioned it as ‘Haridwar’, the capital of Lord Shiva. The city was first connected with railways via Laksar, through branch line in 1886. In 2000, Haridwar became a part of the Haridwar district of Uttarakhand which was carved out as a separate state from Uttar Pradesh.

Mythology about Haridwar

As per Hindu mythology, during the Samudra Manthan or the churning of the ocean, the precious drops of elixir or Amrit which carried the boon of immortality were accidentally spilled at four sites i.e Ujjain , Nasik , Allahabad , and Haridwar. To commemorate this event, Kumbh Mela, and Maha Kumbh Mela , the mass Hindu pilgrimages of faith is celebrated once in three years and once in 12 years at one of the four places respectively. It is believed that Brahma Kund situated at Har Ki Pauri is the place where the drops of elixir fell.

An Insight into Haridwar Tourism

The tales from the bygone time greatly influence the contemporary era, and thus, Haridwar is often seen imbibing the spiritual feel. Believed to be amongst the four places where drops of Amrit (Elixir) fell, Haridwar is relied upon for cleansing of sins and attainment of salvation, and thus, is an important Hindu pilgrimage destination in Uttarakhand. It is also due to this fact that Haridwar hosts the biggest human gathering in the world in the form of Kumbh Mela. Since time immemorial, Haridwar is considered as one of the important religious tourism destinations in India; it has also been the Yoga and Ayurveda centre for a decent period of time. In other words, Haridwar can be called as the place where faith defies the existence of everything else and the life of the people only revolves around the sacred Ghats crammed by devotees; the holy water of Ganges that is believed to cleanse the sin; the sanctified temples; and the famed Ganga Aarti that sanctifies the ambiance as soon as the sun disappears below the horizon each evening.

Spiritual Tourism: An Emerging Catalyst Transforming Real Estate Growth in India

Reported By : Mohammad Haris

Last Updated: April 25, 2024, 16:14 IST

New Delhi, India

There has been a staggering 585 per cent increase in search for Ayodhya in recent years. (Image: PTI file).

There has been a staggering 585 per cent increase in search for Ayodhya in recent years. (Image: PTI file).

Ayodhya, Varanasi, Vrindavan, Haridwar, and Tirupati stand out and witnessing unprecedented growth in sipritual tourism

The growing popularity of spiritual tourism across India while revitalising the travel industry has also turned out to be a driving force behind the transformation of the real estate sector. Among these, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Vrindavan, Haridwar, and Tirupati stand out and witnessing unprecedented growth.

Online searches for spiritual cities have increased substantially. For example, recent data released by a leading travel portal MakeMyTrip found a staggering 585 per cent increase in search for Ayodhya in recent years. The Uttar Pradesh government is also actively acquiring land in religious cities to develop theme-based townships.

Yash Miglani, managing director of Migsun Group, said, “Ayodhya, Varanasi, Vrindavan, Haridwar, and Tirupati are among the prominent cities where prominent developers are acquiring land and initiating residential projects. The charm of these cities is not only for their spirituality, but they are also emerging as potential retirement havens, attracting homebuyers both locally and far away for personal use as well as investment purposes. Recently, we had held a developer’s meet in Varanasi, where significant interest was expressed in commencing projects in the spiritual hub due to its substantial demand.”

Plans are also underway for a sprawling 1,000-acre township in Ayodhya, blending contemporary and traditional architectural elements. As a result, land prices and property transactions in Ayodhya have surged by approximately 50 per cent since the ground-breaking ceremony for the grand temple to Lord Ram in August 2020.

Ankit Kansal, managing director of 360 Realtors, said, “India’s growing spiritual tourism will unlock new investment opportunities, giving rise to a niche but high-growth segment. As religious-spiritual tourism destinations such as Vrindavan, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Ujjain, etc., are thriving, there is an increased demand for concept-based real estate such as second homes, plotted developments, farmhouses, etc. Investments will rise in residential, commercial, and hospitality projects.”

He added that many tourists now do not prefer to stay in mainstay hotels; instead, they prefer homestays, rental villas, nature resorts, etc. This will pique interest in alternative hospitality business ventures. The profile of tourists is also evolving and now increasingly involves millennials, business travellers, foreigners, NRIs, and multi-generational families. This also means destinations alongside religious offerings also need to give a more holistic, wholesome stay to incoming tourists. This will further create new opportunities.

Plans are also underway for sprawling townships in temple cities, blending contemporary and traditional architectural elements. As a result, land prices and property transactions in have witnessed an unprecedented surge. For example, in the case of Ayodhya land prices have increased about 50 per cent since the ground-breaking ceremony for the grand temple to Lord Ram in August 2020.

Nayan Raheja of Raheja Developers said, “Cities across India with religious significance are witnessing a surge in property development, driven by the increasing popularity of spiritual tourism and retirement homes. The infrastructure development and favourable business conditions have encouraged developers to explore opportunities in these spiritual hubs.”

Omaxe Group MD Mohit Goel also said booming spiritual tourism and the increasing prominence of temple towns have unleashed a new reality potential. Leading this trend is Ayodhya, where property prices, especially after the ground-breaking ceremony in 2020, have spiralled upwards.

“Quite a similar situation exists in Vrindavan, where land prices have more than doubled in the last few years. The approval of projects like the Bankey Bihari Corridor, spanning 5 acres, has further stimulated demand. Cities like Ujjain and Prayagraj have also witnessed a significant rise in real estate demand. As a real estate developer, we see huge potential in the real estate sphere in these cities, and we already have launched residential as well as commercial projects in Vrindavan, Ujjain and Prayagraj,” Goel said.

The emergence of spiritual tourism is not only reshaping cities’ skyline but has also heralded a new era of prosperity and opportunity. As stakeholders seek to harness the city’s cultural heritage and tourist influx to drive realty development, such cities have emerged as frontrunners of investment opportunities.

'Roughest landing': Watch video of plane bouncing off runway as it attempts to land at LAX

haridwar video tourism

A Boeing 747 operated by Lufthansa Airlines ran into a couple of bumps as it landed at LAX Airport in Los Angeles.

Video footage of the landing, captured by Airlines Videos Live , shows the aircraft skidding on the runway and then bouncing off the ground as it attempts to land. The plane then takes off again, flying for a few minutes before successfully landing.

"What? Whoa, whoa, whoa," the commentator of the livestream could be heard saying. "We're getting that go around. Holy moly. Wow. That is the roughest landing I think we've ever caught on our broadcast."

A Boeing 747-8 Lufthansa flight was scheduled to land around 1 p.m. ET at LAX after a more than 11-hour flight from Frankfurt, Germany, LAX's website shows.

Columnist: Another Boeing plane issue? Don't fall for the headlines.

No injuries reported

Lufthansa Airlines, in an email statement to USA TODAY, said that Flight LH 456 from Frankfurt to Los Angeles had a "rough landing" Tuesday. 326 passengers and 19 crew members were on board the flight and no injuries were reported.

The airline said the plane later flew back to Frankfurt following "an assessment by the cockpit crew, a consultation with the technical department on site and in Frankfurt and an initial visual inspection," where it will undergo further inspection. Lufthansa did not specify if the plane flew back empty or had passengers on board.

Airline Videos Live captures planes as they take off and land at LAX Airport. The livestream was created in 2019 by Los Angeles TV News photojournalist Kevin Ray, according to the YouTube channel account description .

While Boeing incidents have been in the news in recent months after a series of high-profile incidents , aviation experts maintain you shouldn't worry about flying .

“We don’t have to worry that there’s something systemically wrong with aviation,” Clint Balog, an associate professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, previously told USA TODAY.

California Governor Newsom launches abortion travel ban ad campaign in Alabama

By Dave Pehling

Updated on: April 22, 2024 / 1:41 PM PDT / CBS San Francisco

California Governor Gavin Newsom is taking aim at states considering abortion travel bans with the launch of a new ad campaign.

Newsom's Campaign for Democracy ad is set to air in Alabama starting Monday. The governor tweeted out the ad in a social media post Sunday morning.

Alabama’s abortion ban has no exceptions for rape or incest. Now, Republicans are trying to criminalize young women’s travel to receive abortion care. We cannot let them get away with this. pic.twitter.com/gHbYJYlEXk — Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) April 21, 2024

The text with the video post reads, "Alabama's abortion ban has no exceptions for rape or incest. Now, Republicans are trying to criminalize young women's travel to receive abortion care. We cannot let them get away with this."

The 30-second commercial shows two nervous young women driving in a car passing a sign that reads "State Line 1 Mile."

"We're almost there. You're gonna make it," the passenger tells the woman behind the wheel just before they hear a siren and are pulled over by a state trooper.

"Trump Republicans want to criminalize young Alabama women who travel for reproductive care," a voiceover says as the state trooper walks up to the car.

"Miss, I'm going to need you to step out of the vehicle and take a pregnancy test," the trooper says, waving a test stick in one hand. The next shot shows the driver leaning on the hood of her car as the trooper puts her in handcuffs.

"Stop them by taking action at RightToTravel.org ," the voiceover intones as the ad ends.

Alabama is currently weighing a bill that would make it a crime to help women travel outside the state in order to receive an abortion. The ad is part of a larger effort to combat travel bans across the United States. Newsom was behind a similar ad that ran in Tennessee.

The RightToTravel.org website says that those two states and Oklahoma are considering bills that ban minors from traveling out of state to get an abortion without parental consent, even if it's a case of incest or if there is abuse in the family.

It isn't the first action the governor has taken in the political battle over abortion since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June of 2022. Two days after the ruling, Newsom partnered with the governors of Oregon and Washington to issue a multi-state commitment promising to defend access to reproductive health care, including abortion and contraceptives.

In September of that year, he launched a billboard campaign in seven of the most restrictive anti-abortion states urging women seeking the procedure to come to California for treatment. He also signed more than a dozen new abortion laws  protecting women's reproductive rights and ordered the state to end its contract with Walgreens after the pharmacy giant  indicated it would not sell an abortion pill by mail in some conservative-led states .

Southwest Airlines CEO says airline may reevaluate open seating after financial loss

The CEO made comments following the carrier's Q1 results.

Southwest Airlines famously allows passengers to select their own seats upon boarding, but the low fare carrier could be changing course.

PHOTO: People line up based on boarding group numbers to board a Southwest Airlines flight at Oakland International Airport (OAK), Jan. 5, 2020, in Oakland, Calif.

Earlier this week, after the Dallas-based carrier reported a $231 million net loss from the first quarter of 2024, CEO Bob Jordan commented on the "disappointing" results and said they are "evaluating options to enhance our Customer Experience" which he said includes "onboard seating."

"We are focused on controlling what we can control and have already taken swift action to address our financial underperformance and adjust for revised aircraft delivery expectations," he continued.

PHOTO: A Southwest Airlines plane prepares to land at Midway International Airport, Feb. 12, 2023, in Chicago.

On a webcast recording of the earnings call, Jordan said, "It's been several years since we last studied this in-depth, and customer preference and expectations change over time."

Jordan later spoke about the potentially massive shift to its open seating cabins as a means to drive up revenue, CNBC first reported.

"We’re looking into new initiatives, things like the way we seat and board our aircraft," Jordan told CNBC.

While Southwest offers priority boarding groups for an additional fee, the company's all-Boeing 737 fleet of single economy class aircraft is known by consumers and among airline competitors for its simplistic and affordable experience.

Southwest did not respond to ABC News' request for additional comment and pointed to the quarterly earnings report.
