Five Favorite Scenic River Cruises in Europe

Introduction to scenic river cruises.

If you’re not familiar with Scenic River Cruises, it’s an all-inclusive, luxury European river cruise company. Unlike most other river cruise lines, Scenic River Cruises is really an all-inclusive, luxury experience. Included in the price of your cabin is airfare and transfers, food, beverages, gratuities and even your own private butler.

After reading through their 2019 and 2020 Europe river cruise itineraries, I’ve narrowed down a few of my (and others) favorite Scenic River Cruises in Europe. But first…

Why take a Europe river cruise

European river cruises are a fantastic way to soak up culture, history and the beautiful, varied landscape that surrounds that part of the world. In just a few short miles, you can cruise from bustling, modern cities to quaint, charming villages. Overnight, you’ll see architecture change from intricate, 18 th century buildings to classical Roman monuments. That’s the beauty of Europe, especially when experienced on a river cruise.

I’ve profiled five popular European river cruise itineraries that give you a rich and varied look at the tapestry that forms Europe’s past and present. Read on to find out which cruise might be your idea of a perfect vacation.

Five Favorite Scenic River Cruise Itineraries

Danube cruises – culturally-rich tours through the heart of europe.

The Danube river cuts through central Europe, taking a 1,785-mile journey through 10 countries on its way towards the Black Sea. Highlights of a Central and Eastern European Danube river cruise mean catching glimpses of the wonderful culture on offer in cities such as Budapest, Vienna and Bratislava.

Spotlight on: Budapest. Budapest is a city of two parts. Literally. One part Buda, the other part Pest, the city of two parts is split by the river Danube, and a cruise down the middle of the two areas is a great way to experience both. Today’s combined city was formed in 1873, and cruises today allow guests to gaze upon the surroundings that tell the story of Middle Age fortresses, Ottoman architecture and the catastrophic flooding of the 19 th century.

Today Budapest is a modern metropolis teamed with beautiful historical Baroque and Classical architecture. We recommend taking a trip to – and a dip in – Széchenyi Thermal Baths, discovering Buda Castle and then strolling down the Danube as you marvel at the Hungarian Parliament Building.

Set sail from the Swiss Alps on the Rhine

The Rhine, sometimes referred to colloquially as the ‘Romantic Rhine’, is 764 miles of pure bliss. Meandering from the scenic Swiss Alps, through France, Germany and the Netherlands, a journey along the Rhine will take guests through the picturesque and unique Black Forest, the old towns of Strasbourg, France and to the charming city of Amsterdam.

Spotlight on: Amsterdam. For those embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime trip along the Rhine, we recommend you take in the wonderful city of Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. Take a bike ride across town, enjoy the finest waffles around and stroll through the city’s picturesque streets as you prepare for the next stop on your Rhine tour.

A Rhône river cruise will show you some of Europe’s most enchanting destinations

Heading southwards through France on the Rhône, cruisers will pass through Lyon, Valence, Avignon and Arles, before entering the Mediterranean Sea. As you set sail through the Rhône Valley, the vibrant, naturally-scenic environment will greet you and wake up your senses.   The Rhône region is simply wonderful.

Spotlight on: Avignon. This commune is perched on the southern edge of the Rhône, and offers architecture unlike anything else, such as the 14 th century Palais des Papes. For the wine lovers, a visit to the Côtes du Rhône vineyard is a must-see, where guests can try out the revered wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The Douro cuts a beautiful course through Portugal and Spain

Moving away from France and Germany, the river Douro cuts a beautiful course through Spain and Portugal, making pit-stops at Porto, Regua, Pocinho and Salamanca.

Spotlight on: Porto. Often overshadowed by capital Lisbon, Porto is perhaps Portugal’s most underrated city. Situated on the edge of the Douro, Porto looks out across the Atlantic Ocean, and is a cultural hub full of contemporary activities and historical sights. Climb to the top of the Clérigos Tower, sip on a coffee and stroll the streets of Porto like a local. Visit this city on a Douro cruise before everyone else adopts it as their own!

The 777km-long Seine is a perfect vantage point for romantic Paris

Have you ever seen the Eiffel Tower look as good as when it’s viewed from the river Seine? Flowing through the heart of the world’s most romantic city, the river Seine is the ideal waterway to cruise down if you’re looking for a couple’s European getaway. Northern France never looked so good, and stop-offs such as Paris, Rouen and Honfleur can be reached en route. Guests can soak up the best French cider at Fleury-la-Forêt, or appreciate the significance of the legacy of the Somme battlefields at Rouen.

Spotlight on: Paris. Simply inimitable, unique, and totally timeless. The unofficial capital romance is a fantastic way to mark your Seine river cruise. It needs no explanation – it’s simply unmissable!

If you want to know my favorite of all of these, it’s probably a toss-up. I’ve been up and down the Rhine a few dozen times and have really become good at knowing my way around all the ports. But I think the best time for a Rhine river cruise is during Christmas Markets, from late November through December.

My other favorite itinerary in any season would be a Seine river cruise from Paris to the Normandie Beaches and back. Or maybe it’s a Danube cruise. Bottom line, they’re all wonderful. And with the real all-inclusiveness offered by Scenic, any of their river cruises can be a stressless and memorable experience.

15 of the Best European River Cruises

Explore France, Germany, and more on these European river cruises.

scenic european river cruises reviews

Much of the appeal of European river cruises, especially as we emerge from the pandemic with pent-up travel demand, is the small size of the ships, casual atmosphere, and accessibility. Unlike oceangoing ships that carry as many as 5,000 passengers, most river cruise ships accommodate around 150 guests, for a more intimate experience. Balconies, floor-to-ceiling windows, and open-air viewing are features of most river cruise ships, and some offer pools, spas, fitness areas, and jogging tracks.

Guests are kept busy (if they wish to be) with daily shore excursions, and most cruises offer several options depending on interests and activity levels. Bikes and walking tours are available in most ports, or guests can choose a leisurely day in a comfortable lounge enjoying the passing scenery.

"River cruises offer opportunities to step ashore in fairy-tale towns and fabled cities. You can immerse yourself in contemporary culture and learn something about the history of the towns along the continent's greatest rivers," according to Ralph Grizzle of River Cruise Advisor . "Sitting on the top deck of a ship under brilliant blue skies, you can gaze on fabled landscapes dotted with castles, villages, and vineyards. A flight of stairs down, and you have all the amenities of a modern hotel—restaurants, bars, fitness facilities, spas, internet access, and comfortable staterooms."

With a number of cruise companies and rivers to choose from, planning a river cruise can take some time. Consulting with a travel advisor is always a good idea, and there's plenty of information available online as well. These are the major companies offering the best European river cruises along with examples of their itineraries.

CroisiEurope Cruises

The company's innovative approach allowed them to be pioneers on several rivers in Europe including the Gironde, Loire, Po, and Elbe, basing their ships' design on the characteristics of the waterways.

CroisiEurope's seven-day "Hamburg to Berlin: Discover the Medieval Charms of Hanseatic Cities" cruise starts with guided tours of Hamburg and Lübeck, A UNESCO World Heritage Site. After a morning cruise, the ship will ride on the Scharnebeck twin ship lift, one of the highest in Europe, with a vertical lift of 125 feet. An optional visit to the Autostadt theme park, dedicated to German auto design, and an afternoon cruise fill day four. The next day, there's a tour of Magdeburg, known for its fascinating architecture and culture. The ship arrives in Berlin for a tour and festive evening.

This German cruise company' s distinctive ships are easy to recognize by the large red lips and rose on the bow. Their fleet of 12 ships was joined by the new A-Rosa Sena , a hybrid powered ship expected to cruise the northern Rhine almost silently and emission-free. Family-friendly amenities include a kids club, heated outdoor pools, and free passage for children ages 15 and under.

In Hamburg, there's a city tour and harbor cruise before the cruise continues to the Baltic resort, Laboe, and ends in Kiel.

Teeming River Cruises

Belmond has another way to cruise some of Europe's rivers — on luxury barges with private chefs and excursions like truffle hunting, hot air ballooning, canoeing, and wine tasting. Seven barges make up Afloat in France , each with its own style and size. The elegant barges cruise the waterways of Burgundy, Provence, Alsace, Champagne, Languedoc, and Franche-Comté from April to October.

On the Belmond Napoleon , guests cruise the River Saône past châteaux, rural river towns, and expansive vineyards. Stops at Montmerle, Mâcon, and Tournus offer opportunities for wine tasting and exploring a Benedictine abbey. There's a walking tour of Chalon-Sur-Sâone and time to browse through St. Jean de Losne.

9 best river cruises in Europe

Fran Golden

River cruising in Europe is one of those delightfully slow and easy modes of travel. You're in a small floating hotel, exploring calm inland waters, gliding past castles and vineyards and scenery that changes by the hour.

Daily escorted walking tours and other excursions provided by the river line take you to key UNESCO World Heritage Sites and other city and village attractions you've come to see. Or you can choose to explore on your own, which is easy since your ship often will dock right in town.

Lazy afternoons on the ship afford the time to sit in a lounge chair and watch the world go by — kids swimming from the riverbanks, farmers tending their crops, river birds flapping their wings — as you glide to your next destination.

Which European river should you explore? The choices are broader than you might expect.

The main rivers in Europe are the Danube and the Rhine and their tributaries. They are, by far, the most popular, doable either on one-week segments or longer itineraries that combine areas and sometimes combine rivers. Even if your cruise is only a week, don't underestimate the allure of relaxing for seven days on a river in France or on the dreamy Douro in Portugal.

Here are the best river cruises in Europe.

Upper Danube

scenic european river cruises reviews

When it comes to Europe river cruises, a perfect seven-night starter sailing is the Upper Danube, which takes you through centuries of history as you explore Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary.

Ships visit such cultural hubs as Vienna, with its opera and art museums and elaborate royal palaces, and Budapest, Hungary, with its magnificent architecture and modern vibe. If your ship passes the Hungarian Parliament building at night, you're in for a treat; magnificently lit, it's one of the most photographed sights on the river.

Along the route, between Melk and Krems in Austria, you cruise through the Wachau Valley, a key wine-growing region producing rieslings and gruner veltliners, with sipping opportunities available. It's also a great place to bike, which is why it's nice to sail with lines, such as AmaWaterways , that carry bikes on board for passengers to use.

You might also have the option of a side trip to Salzburg, Austria, the birthplace of Mozart — and also where several scenes for the movie "Sound of Music" were filmed. A surprise for many is Old Town Bratislava, Slovakia, which might not have been on your must-do list but which charms with its beer culture and castles.

Lower Danube

For a deep dive into Eastern Europe's past and present, the fascinating Lower Danube route between Budapest and Bucharest, Romania, explores history from the medieval times and Victorian era of Dracula to the rise of communism and the Bosnian War.

The seven-night river cruise takes you through Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. The most beautiful stretch of the river is a 62-mile passage through a gorge between the Balkan and Carpathian Mountains. It's also one of the deepest stretches of river in the world.

Other sights accessed on shore excursions via bus include Bulgaria's Belogradchik Rocks, which are naturally carved towering red rock pinnacles that appear to take forms such as "Madonna with child," and Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria's stunning medieval capital.

When it comes to top cruising rivers in Europe, the Rhine wins for natural beauty and fairytale landscapes. A cruise on the river between Amsterdam in The Netherlands, and Basel, Switzerland — a typical one-week route — takes you past expanses of slope-side vineyards, forests and mountains, historic cities and medieval half-timbered villages.

That's even before you get to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 40-mile stretch of river, between Rudesheim and Koblenz, Germany, has castles galore — you might imagine Rapunzel letting down her hair — and Lorelei Rock, the legendary cliff said to distract sailors with the mesmerizing song of a maiden.

The French city of Strasbourg, with its famous Gothic cathedral and robust Alsatian culinary scene, is often a favorite stop on Rhine itineraries, with other highlights including Heidelberg, Germany, and its imposing castle.

Sure, you can catch sight of the Eiffel Tower when boarding a river ship in Paris, but you can do that while staying in a hotel, too. The real attractions of a Seine River cruise are sailing on the river outside the city toward the English Channel and a visit to the beaches in Normandy for a perspective on World War II.

Your visit there and to the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, as well as other memorials and monuments to the fallen, is a poignant experience (one that requires a two-hour bus ride from your ship, however). Avalon Waterways brings a World War II expert on board to add insight on select sailings.

Other treasures exist along the Seine, not the least of which is Giverny, the home and gardens of impressionist artist Claude Monet. If you are a fan of his art, much of the property might seem familiar.

In historic Rouen, where Joan of Arc was martyred in the Middle Ages, stop by the Rouen Cathedral (another subject of Monet) before losing yourself on cobblestone streets with wonderful cafes.

Bordeaux river cruises are different from other water routes because you explore two short waterways — the Dordogne and Garonne Rivers — and the Gironde Estuary in Southwest France.

You'll spend more time ashore than floating down the river on this itinerary, with your ship docked for two nights in the city of Bordeaux, a mini-Paris with grand 18th-century buildings. Who cares when you are in the epicenter of French culture, in one of the most celebrated wine regions in the world?

Bordeaux serves up the opportunity to sip Medoc, Margaux, Saint-Emilion, Pomerol and Sauternes wines as you expand your wine education. You'll visit vineyards and gorgeous chateaus. Your cruise line might even host a dinner at a wine estate one evening. If you plan your cruise for September or October, you'll be able to admire the grape harvest.

Rhone and Saone

Another must for wine-lovers is exploring the interior of France, sipping Cotes du Rhone in such famous winemaking regions as Hermitage and Chateauneuf-du-Pape in Provence and Beaune in Burgundy.

Rhone and Saone River cruises typically sail between Lyon and Arles or Avignon, and they're top-loaded with such non-wine attractions as the Roman aqueduct Pont du Gard and the Roman Arles Amphitheater, as well as the massive Palais des Papes (Papal Palace) in Avignon. You'll also be able to take in the lavender fields, haystacks and other scenes that inspired painters like Paul Cezanne and Vincent Van Gogh.

For a lazy, dreamy, wonderful river cruise experience, nothing quite beats exploring the wine regions of Portugal on the Douro, one of the major rivers through the Iberian Peninsula. The home base for these river cruises is Porto, Portugal, with its historic city center, spectacular bridges and port houses.

On one-week cruises, you'll follow the river 130 miles past green hillside vineyards in the Douro River Valley, a UNESCO-recognized destination, before turning around at the Spanish border. The river cruises typically include a visit to the university town of Salamanca in northern Spain. Viticulture is very much the lesson en route, as you learn about port production on the "River of Gold."

Due to fluctuating water levels and narrow passages, the Elbe is a challenging river that runs 680 miles between the Czech Republic and Germany. Historically, it formed part of the border between East Germany and West Germany.

River cruising here is a rare experience. Viking River Cruises is one of the few lines that visits (another is the French line CroisiEurope), offering 10-day itineraries that combine hotel stays in the cities of Berlin and Prague with a stretch of river between Prague and Wittenburg, Germany.

The cruises are on ships built specifically for the Elbe route. They stop in places such as resurgent Dresden, heavily bombed during World War II but expertly rebuilt; the Saxon Switzerland region of Germany with its striking sandstone rock formations; and the spa town of Bad Schandau.

The Po River in northern Italy is tidal, making it another challenging waterway. However, it affords the opportunity to combine a visit to Venice with a river cruise. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises does the Po in high style with its 126-passenger S.S. La Venizia, completely decked out with a sense of place, from Fortuny fabrics and Murano glass to its gilded accents.

The one-week route doesn't take you far but does include the walled city of Padua, the charming fishing village of Chioggia, and the culinary mecca of Bologna.

For those looking for a longer experience, Uniworld cleverly combines a Po cruise with luxury rail journeys to places like Istanbul, Switzerland and beyond.

The tour was very good, the crew were excellent, very helpful, approachable and informative and always available. The tours were great and the Danube is wonderful to cruise on. The food was of excellent quality but the fact that there was no choice on the menu was poor and we feel there should have been an earlier sitting for dinner, and lunch could have been a buffet. The accommodation was adequate but the shower was totally inadequate. We enjoyed the cruise

It was a great cruise. The food was amazing, the crew was really helpful, and the tours and tour guides were great. The only thing to imporve on if the WiFi which only worked half the time.
The Wi-Fi didn’t work as expected and it caused quite an inconvenience. The excursion plan is not as clear either. Overall it’s still a good tour but I think my last Danube river with Avalon is better than this rhino river cruise.
Great company to cruise with. Ship carries 110 passengers. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner each day. Plenty of stops to sightsee. The castles along the Rhine make trip a very enjoyable cruise. All staff were great.

Scenic River Cruise Review: Dutch Sites & Belgian Delights

The Rhine is one of the largest rivers in Europe, connecting six countries from its source in Switzerland to the North Sea. It was the main trading hub for many of the towns and cities that connected to it, creating thriving, wealthy economies along the river. As a result, communities along the Rhine are often an example of stunning architecture and historical landmarks.

A river cruise on the Rhine is a relaxing way to explore historical sites, taking in the sights in a slow-paced relaxing way.

scenic european river cruises reviews

That was why we chose the Dutch Sites and Belgian Delights itinerary on Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours. Our particular sailing had an extra day at Floriade, the once-every-decade eco-horticulture expo. That’s not on the schedule for future sailings. The itinerary is now called Windmills, Tulips, and Belgian Delights, but still shows off some of the smaller towns in the Netherlands.

We are unapologetically cruise lovers. Big ships, small ships, and ships in between. Oceans, rivers, canals. We enjoy them all for different reasons. We believe there’s that’s right for you! It’s just a matter of considering your interests and preferences and matching them up with a cruise line that targets them.

Knowing where to start, and the questions to ask may seem complicated. That’s why we continue to write about different types of cruising, different ships, different cruise lines, and different itineraries. And we go indepth, all in one story, so you don’t have to hop around looking for everything. You’ll find everything you need to know right here – suites, food and beverage, pricing, itineraries, what we did, and all of our recommendations.

Our goal is to help you make an informed cruise choice.

One of the reasons we find cruising the European rivers appealing is that it takes us to smaller towns that we might otherwise not discover on our own. The ships are smaller, the pace is slower, and there’s usually an emphasis on local cuisine, entertainment, and events. The ship often docks right in the heart of town, making it easy to walk (or bike) independently. We enjoy the freedom to come and go on our own.

What attracted us to Scenic River Cruises was a combination of visiting these small towns and their all-inclusive luxury. In an industry that has moved away from what an all-inclusive cruise experience should be, Scenic hasn’t. Butler service? Included. Wine and cocktails (in the minibar as well)? Included (with the exception of some rare vintages). Shore excursions? Included. Gratuities, airport transportation, specialty restaurants? The price includes all of these.

Unless you do a little shopping in the small gift shop or opt for a salon or spa treatment, you’ll walk off the ship without owing an additional penny. Planning your vacation budget, and knowing it doesn’t change, is a real value luxury experience.

Best of all, Scenic provides this level of luxury without being fussy or too full of itself.

We received a complimentary sailing as media covering the ship and the itinerary. When a family member heard our enthusiasm for the cruise, she decided to book a cabin and flight, and sail along with us. We’ve incorporated some of her feedback into this piece.

The Ship: Scenic Crystal

The Scenic Crystal was the sixth ship to join the Scenic fleet (2012). The ship was designed to offer sailing luxury, with spacious suites, well-thought-out common areas, and butler service for every guest. The Scenic Crystal measures 443 feet and can carry 163 passengers. That 3:1 crew-guest ratio makes for a more intimate experience while still delivering exceptional service.

Though the ship is small with only four decks, every detail of the ship has been carefully thought out to give the illusion of space. The Crystal is one of Scenic’s “space ships,” a nod to the suite design that incorporates the balcony into the cabin. It’s hard to explain, but enjoyable to experience, and has had an additional iteration in subsequent Scenic ships.

Sun Deck and Riverview Terrace

Located at the front of the Sun Deck, the highest deck on the ship, the Riverview Terrace offers a panoramic view of the sites along the river. There are deck chairs and games available, but we enjoyed it as a place to sit and relax. Or to enjoy the scenic when docked.

The weather was warm during our mid-July sailing, so the Sun Deck was our go-to spot for a refreshing beverage and conversation. There were tables and chairs in the shade (placed beneath tents) and loungers for those who preferred full sun. A combination of both worked for us.

view from top deck of a river cruise ship as it gets ready to pass below a bridge at night

We also liked going up top at night – for a look at the stars, the light along the bank of the river, and perhaps my favorite, watching as we sailed under the various bridges.

The Wheelhouse, where the crew pilot the ship, is also located on the Sun Deck.

Diamond Deck

During embarkation, you’ll board on the Diamond deck, located one deck below the Sun Deck. This is where you’ll find guest services, a small gift shop,

Also on the Diamond Deck is an outdoor seating area, Portobellos Restaurant, River Cafe, and the Lounge and Bar. The Lounge was the primary meeting space, not only for general conversations and drinks, but it’s also where excursion information, menu and wine updates, entertainment, and general information were shared. The lounge had floor-to-ceiling windows on both sides, making it bright and appealing.

Bright lounge on Scenic Crystal river cruise with black and white bar and lots of seating.

During the day, it was fairly empty and quiet. When I had work to do, it was convenient to spread out and get things done. Having a beverage handy didn’t hurt either.

In the evenings, it was busy and noisy. You’d generally find us there enjoying lively conversation, trying to win a trivia contest, and talking travel.

Suites are located on the Diamond Deck, with cabins here providing a couple of extra perks.

Sapphire Deck

The Crystal Dining Room and Table La Rive are located on the Sapphire Deck. The galley (ship-speak for kitchen) is located forward of the dining areas.

Suites occupy the remainder of this deck.

The wellness center (spa), fitness center, and salt therapy lounge are located on the Jewel Deck.

Gym with equipment on Scenic Crystal river ship

While I didn’t use the fitness center or make a spa appointment (regrets on that one), I did spend a little time in the salt therapy lounge. There were three loungers, separated by a gauzy curtain, giving privacy without creating a dark and depressing room. Himalayan salt lined the walls, and crushed salt was on the floor.

a brown chaise lounge in a salt room with crush salt on floor and blocks of himalyan salt on walls, a gauzy drape provides privacy

It’s debatable whether salt therapy, also called halotherapy, has medical benefits. My use has been for relaxation, and I’ve enjoyed it. Obviously, consult a medical professional with any health concerns or questions.

The remainder of the deck is suites.

Restaurants and Dining

In general, we found the dining options and venues were great. Food preferences vary widely, even in (perhaps, especially) my own home. We not gourmet foodies, so our comments are fairly general. I loved something, Tony did not. We tried new things, some were hits and others misses.

Our expectations for food are reasonably basic. Fresh, flavorful, not too weird, and satisfying. Extra points for creativity, but we are not looking for Michelin-star meals every night.

It takes a lot of hard work to serve a dining room full of cruisers who signed on for an all-inclusive luxury experience. I’m sure there were hiccups. Crew members are, after all, getting back into their routine after a rather extended period of time off. They genuinely appeared happy to have us onboard and eager for us to have a wonderful time. They work hard.

We found service in the Lounge and on the Sun Deck was fairly slow, and on occasion, there was confusion over cocktails ordered. It will shake out, I’m sure. The service in the dining venues was terrific.

Our additional thoughts are below.

The River Cafe serves an early riser breakfast (6-9 am), along with light lunches for those who don’t want a heavy meal in the middle of the day. It’s located between the Lounge and Portobellos restaurant, so spans the vibe from both of those. On a nice day, you may want to take your breakfast or lunch to one of the outdoor tables. This is primarily self-serve, except for beverages.

Portobellos Restaurant

Next to the River Cafe, is Portobellos Restaurant. Portobellos serves a late-riser breakfast, lunch, and an invitation-only five-course wine-paired dinner. Guests are given information about Portobellos and can sign up for the night they prefer once onboard (our reservations were handled differently as we were part of a group).

We both loved the Italian menu, which offered two or three choices for each course. Tony is often more selective in his menu choices than I am, and he commented that the ravioli was one of the best he has had. That’s high praise indeed. Service was attentive, staff explained menu options in a friendly, helpful way, and wine was explained when presented. This dining experience was a real treat!

Every guest on board is given the opportunity to dine at Portobellos. Take advantage of it!

Crystal Dining

The Crystal Dining room’s menu changes daily. It’s the main restaurant on the Scenic Crystal and is located on Sapphire Deck. Meal times are listed in the daily calendar, in the app, and posted around the ship. Dining is self-seating, allowing you to choose a table for two, four, six, or eight.

scenic european river cruises reviews

Breakfast and lunch are served buffet-style, with a few items available to order from the menu.

Dinner is a seated service. The menu featured dishes inspired by local cuisines, with a selection of three offered. It was usually easy to make a choice, but if nothing struck our fancy, there were always a few traditional favorites to fall back on (steak, grilled chicken, etc.). Service was consistently good, with friendly waitstaff quick to learn our preferences – why yes, I would like more red wine, thank you.

Table La Rive

Table La Rive is a sophisticated dining table with a set menu that operates on an “invite-only” basis. It is located at the back of the Crystal dining room and is reserved for guests staying on the Diamond Deck and in Junior Suites. This version of a chef’s table operates sufficient nights to accommodate all of the VIP guests. (We were able to snag an invitation as we were part of a group. Otherwise, we’d be looking sadly on.)

Chef Tables often get a bad rep among non-foodies as being pretentious or weird. That was not the case. Sure, we tried some things that we might not otherwise have ordered, but that’s a good thing. The menu was accessible for all palates and food sensibilities, encouraged exploration, and a quick accommodation could be made if there was a real issue. With us, there was not.

Our menu included tapenade and caviar, tuna tatiki, a vegetable cream soup, beef short ribs, lime mousse, and a plate of pralines and petit fours. Deliciousness!

In-Suite Service

We often opted for a continental breakfast room service in our suite. We place our order on the door hangar the night before. It was always delivered on time. I liked this option as I could sit on my balcony and ease into the day. Tony liked it as it allowed him to sleep in just a little bit longer.

The presentation was attractive, food and drink were hot and cold as appropriate, and it was a real treat to have warm milk (for coffee) as an option. Just a little thing, but noticeable.

Suite Options on Scenic Crystal

Scenic Cruises are all about luxury, so no matter which cabin category you choose, you can expect sophisticated interiors and polished finishes. Each suite has a spacious and clever layout to maximize space, which when you’re on a ship, is essential. While space is always at a premium on a ship, we appreciated that there was ample space to stow empty luggage (under the bed), hang clothes in a well-sized closet, and put folded things away in a closet and bedside drawers. We were comfortable in the suite, never felt like we tripping over one another, and it was a pleasant place to be for relaxing and sleeping.

We loved the “space ship” area. While it’s hard to explain, the best analogy I have is that it’s like a sunroom that extends your cabin with floor-to-ceiling windows. The top window can be raised or lowered by a switch in the cabin. I liked sitting here and enjoying my morning coffee. It was also a perfect spot for a nightcap and some fresh nighttime air. When lowered, the air conditioning automatically turns off, so keep that in mind as you enjoy the fresh air.

Selecting a cabin on a ship always stirs up a lively debate. Some cruise fans assert the best value is to buy the least expensive cabin because you won’t spend any time in it. Other cruise fans assert that if you have a great cabin, you’ll want to spend time enjoying it and upgrade whenever you can. While we generally agree with that latter position, we know that every traveler’s value proposition and budget are different.

We set out the various cabin options on the Scenic Crystal, all butler suites, and leave it to you to determine the choice that’s best for you.

  • The entry-level cabin is the Standard Suite. It’s 160-square feet in size, with a small picture window to let natural light in. The window is at the top of the wall, and you can only look out if you are standing (unlike the other suites that have larger windows). These cabins are located on the Jewel Deck, the lowest deck on the ship, so offer a limited view from the windows.
  • One step up from the standard suites is a balcony suite. They are around 205-square feet and come with the addition of the “space saver” balcony. These suites are located on Sapphire and Diamond Decks. We stayed in a Balcony Suite (220) on the Sapphire deck.
  • A slightly larger cabin is the Junior Suite, similarly laid out to the Balcony Suite with a little more space. With 250-square feet, there’s room to add a small seating area. These suites are located on Sapphire and Diamond Decks.
  • The Deluxe Balcony Suites are the same size as the Junior Suites and are distinguishable by location. They are located mid-ship on the Sapphire and Diamond Decks, a location believed to offer a slightly better view.
  • The Royal Balcony Suite offers a generous amount of space at 315-square feet and has a separate bedroom and living area, with an oversized bathroom. These suites are located on the Diamond Deck and also have loungers on the space ships balcony.
  • The Royal Panorama Suites are 325-square feet in size and have a spacious lounge area and a high-end luxury bathroom with a bathtub. They are located aft on Diamond Deck and also have a private balcony. There are only two of these suites on board.
  • For the ultimate luxury experience, the Royal Owner’s Suite is the biggest and most extravagant suite on the ship (520-square feet). It comes with a separate bedroom, walk-in closet, large living area with a bar, and a spacious balcony. There is also a deep soak tub in the bathroom, which has a glass wall so you can see out over the balcony and watch the views go by as you relax in the bath. The owner’s suite is located on the Diamond Deck.

Dutch Sites & Belgian Delights Itinerary

The Rhine was a prominent trade route during the reign of the Roman Empire. It connected tradesmen not just in Europe, but as far as India. It also inspired poets such as Heinrich Heine, Clemens Brentano, and Joseph von Eichendorf who found beauty in its natural surroundings. With so much activity on and about the Rhine, it’s easy to see what it’s a popular choice for river cruise lines and river cruise fans.

On this scenic river cruise, we start on the Rhine, before moving onto the River Scheldt which connects The Netherlands and Belgium.

Every time we talk with people who are new to cruising the most common question we get is “What’s there to do on the cruise?”

With experienced cruisers, we can talk using shorthand cruise and ship talk, pointing out how ocean cruises and river cruises differ, ship differences, and itinerary highlights with shore excursion recommendations. For those new to cruising, a little more detail is often needed to help make a booking decision – whether that’s a decision to book a cruise (and on which cruise line), choose an itinerary, select a cabin, review an itinerary and make an excursion selection.

You can choose to be as active or inactive on a cruise as you wish. Go to all the port talks, socialize in the Lounge, join a large table at meal times, and meet new friends on each excursion. You can also choose a less extroverted option, dining at a small table or in your suite, touring independently, and spending time in your suite or quieter areas of the ship and avoiding crowds.

We have done and enjoyed both – it’s all about the experience you’re looking for. On this cruise we were traveling with a group of friends, so much of our meal and socializing time was spent as a group. We still managed to find alone time to get some work done (me) or nap (Tony).

We try to provide lots of information about cruise choices, but remember, you get to define your perfect cruise vacation!

Here are the specifics about our itinerary, what we did in each port, and our recommendations.

Day 1 – Amsterdam

The cruise begins in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands. Amsterdam has been dubbed the Venice of the North because of its iconic winding canals that meander through its cobbled streets, connected by low arched bridges. Amsterdam is also well known for its architecture, with narrow townhouses featuring ornate gabled facades. Some of the narrowest houses in the world are in Amsterdam, including some just a couple of meters (around seven feet) wide.

We recommend arriving in Amsterdam at least one day early (as we did) and taking time to see a bit of the city as well as recover from any jetlag. I can normally shake off the time zone changes, but would never trust the vagaries of the airlines to trust arriving on the day of sailing.

There’s plenty to do in Amsterdam!

Amsterdam has world-class museums, including the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum (one of my favorites), and Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art. Notable historic sites are Anne Frank House, Rembrandt House, and De Waag on Nieuwmarkt.

rows and rows of bikes in amsterdam

There are bikes everywhere, and in almost all situations they have the right of way (over pedestrians and motor vehicles). Bike rentals are available at most hotels.

Or, you can do as we did, wandered through a local neighborhood and then went on a canal cruise. We saw more neighborhoods as we wended through the city, had a chance to get photos while still relaxing, and got into cruise mode a little early.

We overnighted at the Doubletree by the Amsterdam Central Station, a hotel recommended by Scenic. On the morning the cruise began, a Scenic representative staffed a cruise desk in the hotel lobby. She was cheerful and helpful, advising us of the shuttle to the ship. Since we wanted a little bit of exercise before boarding, we opted to drop off our bags, have breakfast, and then walk to the ship. It’s an easy walk, about 20 minutes, by the Central Station and then along the water.

We were warmly greeted at reception, left our personal items in our suite, and celebrated our embarkation with a sparkling beverage in the Lounge. Then off to explore the ship (one of the first things that I like to do on an unfamiliar ship), then back to the cabin to put things away.

Before we knew it, it was time for safety briefings, sail away, and dinner. A week of river cruising was off to a great start.

Day 2 – Dordrecht

Our first stop was Dordrecht, the oldest city in the Netherlands. It’s predominantly known as a trading city, with several huge warehouses in its historic inner city port area. There’s a similar vibe to Amsterdam, with winding streets lined with canals and low-hanging bridges.

It was a tough excursion choice for us. So many great options, including visits to Rotterdam, Delft, Gouda, and Leiden. We opted for an excursion to Kinderdijk , a small village known for its 18th-century windmills.

scenic european river cruises reviews

Kinderdijk, which means children dike, is home to 19 windmills that survived from the mid-1700s. They were originally built to pump water as part of a water management system to prevent flooding in the area. They have become an iconic Dutch symbol and in 1997 received UNESCO World Heritage status. We had a local guide to accompany us who provided historical and cultural information during our drive and then helped us navigate the site upon arrival.

Fun fact: The population of Kinderdijk is 60 people and 19 windmills.

I loved it here! And even if you’ve seen one windmill, there is still so much to see and learn. We went up in one of the windmills open for display, wandered the grounds (and wished we had more time to wander), and took lots of photos. I returned inspired to learn more; that often happens when I visit historic landmarks. Look for an upcoming article specifically explaining more about Kinderdijk.

We made a great choice.

Day 3 – Veere

Veere is a small historic town in the Zeeland province of the Netherlands. Veere means “ferry.” The town was so named because it was the primary wool trading port between the Netherlands and Scotland during the 16th century. The town welcomes over four million tourists annually, not only from river cruising, but also for its beaches, sailing, and marinas.

Three excursions were offered: a food-related excursion that featured a trip to an oyster farm, a biking trip around town, and a visit to the Delta Works. We opted for the Delta Works excursion because we knew nothing about it and it sounded fascinating.

View at Dutch storm barrier Oosterscheldekering in Zeeland, This Delta Work of dams is designed to protect the Netherlands from flooding from the North Sea

Delta Works is a massive flood protection project launched after the North Sea flood of 1953. I do mean massive – there are three locks, six dams, and four storm surge barriers that constitute this flood defense system – protecting the Netherlands from the North Sea. The American Society of Civil Engineers has named it one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

Our excursion took us to Neeltje Jans, an artificial island that was constructed as part of the project. We toured the museum, which included a movie, exhibits, and a close-up look at the storm barrier. A theme and water park are also on the island.

We return to the ship in plenty of time to walk around Veere. It was everything my mind conjured up in thinking about a small Dutch town.

Not so fun fact: Climate change will necessitate raising the Delta Works barriers in the not too distant future.

This was a good excursion choice for us, but it won’t be for everyone. We like geeky stuff like this – history, engineering, climate change, geography, topography, etc. If that’s not you, one of the other choices would fit you better. E-bikes were available as part of the biking tour or for independent use. Since the topography is flat and there’s great biking infrastructure, this is a great opportunity for a bike ride.

Day 4 – Antwerp

Antwerp is the largest city in Belgium and quite a contrast from the sleepy town of Veere. Known as the Diamond Capital of the World, it’s a prime spot to shop for, well, diamonds. If your budget doesn’t quite stretch that far, you can stock up n some Belgian chocolates. We did. Opt for the artisanal over the mass market.

We chose a walking tour of Antwerp for our excursion. It was Tony’s first visit to Belgium and I think a walking tour is a great way to see a city for the first time. Our guide was lively, animated, and fun. He brought history to life through storytelling, relating historical facts and modern-day details in an engaging manner. How I wish we all could learn history in a way that was this fun and engaging.

Our visit to Antwerp coincided with Belgian National Day, marking the anniversary of Leopold I as the country’s first king. This is a major public holiday in the country, so many of the shops and businesses were closed.

Also mid-tour, the heavens opened up and rain poured down, requiring some adjustments in our time outdoors. Were it not for those two external factors, we would probably have stayed and explored more of the city. We would like to have visited the beautiful train station, wandered the diamond quarter, and stopped off for frites and a beer.

Instead, we chose to walk back to the ship and call it a day. We’ve left Antwerp (and the rest of Belgium) on our list for a future visit.

Fun fact : 84% of all rough diamonds pass through Antwerp.

Day 5 – Arnhem

Back in the Netherlands, the next port of call is the city of Arnhem. Famous for its WWII battle, the Battle of Arnhem, the city is now a popular tourist destination and we looked forward to this stop. Excursion choices included the Netherlands Open Air Museum, a cycling tour of Nijmegen, a visit to the Gardens of Appelltern, and our choice, a visit to the Arnhem Airborne Museum. We’re big history buffs, so this was a no-brainer choice for us.

a yellow mansion with stately grounds that houses the Arnhem Museum in the Netherlands

The Museum provided a personal look at the 1944 Battle of Arnhem through the eyes and footsteps of British parachutists and local residents. There were photos, written and audio stories, quotes, artifacts, and interactive multimedia included in the experience explaining the story of how the British attempted to cross the Rhine and liberate Arnhem from the Germans. Unfortunately, they ran out of ammunition and were eventually captured, setting off a full withdrawal of troops from the area. Arnhem was finally liberated from the Germans in a second battle of Arnhem in 1945. Local residents returned months later to begin the reconstruction process.

Fun Fact : The Battle of Arnhem was depicted in the movie A Bridge Too Far , with Dirk Bogarde, Sean Connery, Michael Caine, James Caan, Ryan O’Neal, Robert, Redford, Maximilian Schnell, Laurence Olivier, Gene Hackman, Elliott Gould, and Anthony Hopkins.

The grounds surrounding the Airborne Museum are beautiful with numerous trails. We had time to do a short walk, but if we had longer, we would have opted to walk the perimeter, a trail that followed the front line of the allied forces.

Following our time at the Museum, we stopped at Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery. It’s a somber visit moving among the 1,764 military graves, reading headstones, and wondering more about the stories of the men buried here.

rows of white headstones marking military graves at Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery in the Netherlands

We made an excellent choice with this tour and highly recommend it to anyone interested in history. Once back at the ship and comparing notes with friends, the Open Air Museum received high praise as well. It’s an outdoor attraction that spans a couple of centuries in its depiction of Dutch life.

Day 6 – Hoorn

With its lively canals and centuries-old buildings, Hoorn is another Dutch town with deep trading roots. In the 17th century, it was the main hub for the Dutch East India Company, which traded pepper, spices, textiles, and yarn. Today, though, it is remarkably undiscovered by tourists, and primarily visited by locals and river cruise guests.

Excursion choices in Hoorn included a visit to a cheese farm, a cooking class, a bike tour, and a Tall Ship sailing experience. Another day of tough choices, so Tony and I decided to split up and each make a different choice.

I opted for the cooking class, along with a few other friends on the cruise, where we made a traditional Dutch apple pie and gingerbread. It was loosely structured, which meant that at times it was like herding cats, and I’m not sure that recipe was all that traditional. The end results, however, turned out well and were surprisingly tasting for a largely unsupervised baking session. We had one of the pies for dessert at dinner.

Tony opted for the Tall Ship excursion. There were several tall ships near where the Crystal was docked and they are beautiful vessels. The excursion familiarized participants with the ship, and the role the tall ships played in history. I’m sure there was a pirate comment or two. They hoisted sails, were ready to sail out, and Mother Nature intervened. No wind!

Instead of heading out into open waters, the intrepid sailors went nowhere. Still, Tony said it was fun looking around the ship, getting photos, and swilling grog. Ok, drinking Dutch beer, but your imagination runs amok on one of these old ships.

Our excursions ended, giving us time to explore downtown Hoorn. There was a street market where we made some souvenir purchases, looked at some shops, walked the town, and soaked up the local atmosphere. It’s a shame that this town gets overlooked as it’s wonderfully charming and worth the visit (and it’s only about 28 miles from Amsterdam).

Evening in Hoorn brought a special treat – a performance from a sea shanty chorale. One of the features of Scenic ships is working some time of enrichment experience into the itinerary and all-inclusive experience. It may be a private concert, an opera selection, or some type of musical or cultural performance. We got sea shanties!

With songs in English and Dutch, the Shantymen Kaap Hoorn kept us entertained and clapping. During an intermission we had a chance to talk to some of the singers and wow, did they have stories to tell. What a great evening!

Day 7 – Floriade

Floriade will not be on your itinerary. The event occurs once every 10 years, and its future is not certain, perhaps a victim of disinterest caused by the pandemic. We had a great time at Floriade, it was a pleasant day strolling the grounds, and we got lots of ideas of things for our yard at home.

ivy covered multi-storied building at the eco horticulture floriade in the netherlands

Day 8 – Amsterdam

And just like that, we were back to where we started in Amsterdam and heading for home.

Cruise pricing is full of special offers. You’ll find lots of bundling, two-for-ones, and airfare deals. Keeping up with cruise pricing can be a full-time job. You’ll need to do your own personal research to evaluate what’s important to you on a river cruise. Armed with that information and knowledge, you can book directly with a cruise line or use travel agents with good cruise knowledge.

A quick look at pricing for 2023 sailings shows an itinerary similar to our operating in April and May 2023. There were a variety of special offers (an early bird fare and a second guest sails free offer). It looks like pricing starts around $3,545 per person, plus port fees.

As you evaluate the value proposition of cruising on a Scenic river cruise ship, remember that these are all-inclusive fares. The price includes the cabin with butler service, meals, excursions, complimentary beverages, cultural enrichment experiences, ground transportation, laundry concierge service, gratuities, and probably more than I’ve forgotten about because I quickly took it for granted.

A word (or more) about gratuities.

I believe that people should be well paid for providing good service. It is a cost of doing business for a company and a cost of travel for the cruiser. I love that gratuities are included on Scenic because it lets me see the full price right up front. Transparency is important to me. Creating artificially low prices that don’t really exist makes me crazy. I love knowing that everyone is fairly compensated, it suits my travel ethos. And I love knowing that I won’t be nickel-and-dimed on board. Constant upselling is tedious.

While not required, I personally believe in adding on a little extra for crew members who have gone above and beyond, I’m told this is neither necessary nor expected. I’d guess it’s greatly appreciated though.

What About Covid

At the time of our sailing, no Covid testing was required for entry into the Netherlands from the U.S., but proof of full vaccination and booster was required. Scenic requires proof of vaccination but does not require a Covid test. So if you are vaccinated and boosted, you’re good to go.

Masks were not required on board the Crystal, although it was not uncommon to see passengers choosing to use one. We were comfortable without masks onboard, knowing the vaccination protocol, but did opt to occasionally don a mask when in close quarters with people (on a bus, in a small shop, or in an elevator).

It’s likely that health protocols may change by the time you sail. The Scenic website does a good job of updating information, so check it frequently.

Are Scenic All-Inclusive River Cruises Right for You

If you’re eager to discover the benefits of small ship river cruising, Scenic is an excellent choice. If you want more people, more activity, casinos, nightclubs, kids clubs, etc., then stick with Ocean cruising.

With a variety of European river itineraries that include sailing on the Danube, Main, Rhine, Moselle, Rhone, Douro, Seine, and the Garonne (and on the Mekong in Asia), you’ll be able to find an itinerary and sailing date that works for you.

The transparent, all-inclusive pricing will be appreciated by everyone wanting to know what the cruise is going to cost all-in and who wants to avoid constant upselling. And the intimate experience with non-pretentious luxury (you don’t need to pack a tuxedo), helps Scenic win new fans.

We’re not alone in making this assessment. We spent time talking with a lot of passengers outside of our small group. Everyone we talked with had sailed on Scenic before, usually more than a handful of times. The consistent response to “why?” was that they appreciated the luxurious touches, the all-in fair pricing, and the casual fun they had on board. We think they’re on to something!

Was thinking about booking a danube…

Was thinking about booking a danube river cruise but after reading these reviews I am now not going to. I notice none of these reviews have been answered by Scenic. That tells you something else. Pity because on their website the cruises looked good. Thank you everybody for your reviews

Never again

Seasoned cruise traveller, first time Scenic River cruise - never again. The only thing 5*star about this company is their marketing - over promise and under deliver. Pleasant staff but this must work within very rigid guidelines - I have never encountered a more non guest friendly cruise company. Had a junior suite, a butler is mere figment of their marketing BS - decor was chrome and mirrors and the food and wine and embarrassment.

This particular cruise ship lack

This particular cruise ship lacks entertainment for guests. No small band, no comics, no shows, no casino. The tours are also very short timeframe and the ship usually docks in the afternoon in mosts cities leaving very little time for guests to leave the ship and enjoy the places you are visiting. Not much information is provided by cruise regarding tours, times, docking etc. everything is a guessing game I personally would not book this cruise line again

we have always had the best holidays…

we have always had the best holidays with Scenic and today I rang on 2 different numbers to enquire about the New Zealand holiday and waited for over 1 hr on 2 different lines and had to eventually hang up, very disappointed.

Very difficult company to deal with

Very difficult company to deal with. After two failed attempts at going on a cruise due to Covid. (nobodys fault). I was given an undertaking that I could have my cruise payments refunded at 30 June 2023. Some 2 years after the second cancelation. Good luck getting Scenic to honour that commitment, they just continue to make empty promises. Unfortunately I will have to take legal action against them to recover my money.

Dissapointed

Cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest change boats 3 times because of this I missed the part I really wanted to see the Rine valley,we spent 5hours on a coach then another 4hour further down the river.

Meaningless guarantee

River cruise ran late. Scenic promised a partial refund under their "guarantee". Since January Scenic has concocted excuse after excuse to delay our refund. Be vary wary travelling with Scenic. We were loyal to Scenic, taking multiple river cruises and land tour, but not anymore. Prices remain premium, but quality and service are now bargain basement.

Scenic canceled the tour & held on to booking funds

After visiting Antartic in 2020 with Scenic, they canceled two other trips that year. Scenic decide to keep the tour payment in full for the first trip. Booking those canceled trips in 2022, Scenic canceled both tours within weeks of the departure dates, without reasons given. Now in june 2023, after months going on a year of refund requests, Scenic refunded the 2020 tour payment. Scenic kept the 2 years of earned interest on our money.

Scenic cannot be trusted

Have just been informed that our fully paid Europe River Cruise for July 2023 has been brought forward by two days! With flights and other travel arrangements locked in, this means either missing the first day or two of an 8 night cruise or paying a large sum to change flights at the second busiest time of the year. Scenic have “generously” offered to pay just half the cost of the changed flights leaving me well out of pocket and with a very poor opinion of this travel company. Are they on a downward spiral with their treatment of customers?

Do not deal with this company

Do not deal with this company. They do not offer 5 star experiences. It is impossible to contact anyone, phones and emails are not answered. Even a personal letter sent by recorded delivery to the chief executive has not been acknowledged. During our recent Danube cruise due to low water levels it was necessary to change ships. Unfortunately when we arrived on the second ship we found that we had been allocated a cabin of a lower grade. No one had the courtesy to advise us of this change and when we complained to the cruise director we were told that we would have to take the matter up with our travel agent when we returned home.

Date of experience : 23 June 2022

Yeah but no.

I understand that the company invokes disaster clauses to avoid giving refunds and then attempts to look like/to be good corporate citizens by offering credit vouchers. They claim those vouchers will be refunded if unused in December 2022. But the product we purchased (a Baltic Cruise) is not being offered again. We will be unable to use that voucher for the experience and know that right now. It’s a large amount of money to withhold.#600873

Very Poor Understanding of Circumstances...

we booked a river cruise to Vietnam/Cambodia for September 2020. Evergreen cancelled our trip due to the China virus and although presenting medical documentation to state we can not take the vaccine, Evergreen/Scenic are refusing to refund the monies we paid for this trip. Very poor Evergreen/Scenic..(Booking Ref. 670928). , Section 5. Cancellation, delays and changes to Your Itinerary. It clearly states at para 5.4 if Evergreen Tours (i.e.. Scenic Tours) delayed for more than 7 days FOR WHATEVER REASON, the customer may terminate the contract and has the option to request either a full refund or a credit towards future tours. Despite numerous attempts via email, Donna Willis (Guest and Corporate Affairs Manager) has FAILED to furnish a direct response to a number of questions I have put to her...

I have been trying to contact them for…

I have been trying to contact them for several days to make changes to a booking. Wait times are anywhere from 40 minutes to over an hour. They can’t answer questions and place you on hold. They have written and stated they would make contact on a day with an update and they don’t. This is beyond frustrating when you are charged a premium for the cruise. This companies customer service and engagement is nonexistent.

So Disappointing, broke their word

From absolutely loving Scenic, in the past, to now being utterly disappointed in their untrustworthiness. Shame on Scenic. Our twice deferred trip finally went ahead, then before departure was curtailed due to inability to supply the tour extension content. We were encouraged to make our own accommodation arrangements for being stuck in a destination three more days than Scenic were able to accommodate us on the understanding we would be reimbursed by Scenic for the three days of hanging around. That was a joke. In the end, the reimbursement made, did not even cover part of one night of the hotel costs in the very hotel that they would have used could they have secured the booking. Money is owed to us and I doubt we will ever see it. We had this offer from Scenic in writing, which subsequently their staff choose to ignore. We were always willing to spend on on Scenic, booking Royal/Owners/Panorama cabins, This a back to back cruise and pre and post tour extensions. We shall not be availing ourselves the displeasure of Scenic again. Shame because we were thinking of booking Scenic Eclipse before this happened. So very disappointing. We shall take our money elsewhere now.

Jewels of Europe…

I recently did the Jewels of Europe tour on the Scenic Jewel which began in Amsterdam on 28th of July and brought my son and his family. Altogether there were 7 of us. I have also booked for 17 people December 2014 for the 7 night Christmas market tour. Please take this feedback in the manner it is intended and I hope it will be helpful for future planning. First of all the staff were absolutely amazing. Nothing was too much trouble and this helped make our trip very enjoyable. Now some areas that could be definitely improved. 1) The food for the evening meal was not good. I understand they have a small kitchen but there is very little variety and whenever we ordered the options of salmon, steak or chicken, they were always well over cooked and dry even when we asked for it to be rare or medium rare. 2) Bread rolls were so tiny and tasteless, Nice large bread rolls would be great 3) One day we had just been in beautiful German wine country where we all got a chair lift over miles and miles of vineyards. That evening we were offered Australian and American wine. I asked if it was possible to have wine from the region we had just visited, and they said sure, but this should have been standard practice and we should not have been offered Australian and American wine. 4) It would be nice to have table cloths at night. We were often tied up next to other boats and could see they had table cloths which made the meal more special 5) Portobellos was closed half the time meaning we only had one turn in there. Suggest opening every night as the meal quality was much better and that way everyone could get 2 opportunities to eat a higher quality meal 6) The machines to talk to listen to the tour guides were terrible. We spent 20 minutes of each tour trying to get them working In the end I just stayed close to the guide so I could hear what they were saying. My brother did same cruise 2 weeks before me and he agreed, Everyone on his trip had same problem. Even the tour guides said other companies use much better and more modern systems, so would be great to replace these. 7) Even though it is small, the massage/facial room is still charging top prices for a treatment but the ambiance was not good. This small space needs to be made a lot more relaxing and spa like. ( Im in the beauty training industry so this really bugged me as we work with small rooms and it is easy to do, good bed, battery candles etc, nice things on wall. 8) I also suggest a dress code for the evening meal, jacket for men, long pants, women well dressed. This raises the level.we were on the trip of a lifetime, and having people in thongs at dinner and shorts ( men and women) lowered the quality As I said, the staff were amazing. I could not fault them, but the suggestions above would be easy to implement and raise the professionalism and quality of Scenic experiences

No Customer Care or Service at Scenic

We have not yet made it to the cruise. That’ll be in May 2023. Scenic took our deposit and were great to deal with. That’s where the good experience to date ended. We are doing other things while in Europe and need to make arrangements now. We need Scenic advice on flights for the cruise before we can make arrangements. I have called Scenic a number of times and waited at least an hour without being answered. I have tried their webchat, as suggested while waiting on the phone. No one is there to chat to. I have emailed a number of times and been advised that they are busy and will get back in 2-3 working days. Three weeks later I have heard nothing. We received a letter from their CEO explaining that Scenic has encountered problems in recent times. He apologised and promised things are improving. Clearly this is rubbish.

3 star cruise for 5 star price avoid

Our booking experience was horrendous. Apparently Their website had been hacked making it impossible to contact anyone as all numbers we called just rang out. We did get in touch with someone after being on hold for over 3 hours. We booked our trip of a life time and we were very excited. We received our booking via email only to find our names spelt wrong so we spent hours trying to contact your booking department to get that changed. We received our invoice promptly we paid and then didn't receive a receipt for a week later and several emails and phone calls later. Not once did your staff apologizes for the delays just ignored our complaints. Very poor service We chose Scenic as they advertised 5 star cruising, top service and luxury. We didn't get that. On arriving at the airport we were a bit unsure where to go - Viking had staff at every gate and several at the meeting place (Amsterdam) we actually asked the Viking representative where the Scenic representative was ! We met up with other passengers and waited, our one representative turned up 30min late ! (with no apology) On boarding our boat -Crystal- was disappointing, she was old, tiered and smelt of sewage. this smell stayed around for 4 days and then the whole boats toilet and shower system went down for a few hours !! Spider webs, bugs, leaking showers, ripped seats, missing chess pieces - Not very luxurious. To get a drink at night was a drama it took at least 30 min to get served. To Scenic's credit the food was amazing. 24 hour butler service! Well we did get to meet our butler who introduced themselves to us when we boarded. We were ill two nights and decided to eat in our room. I rang our butler service to get our dinner delivered to our room only to be told that they where very busy and would get to us when they could, the second night we ordered again only to be told the same thing they where busy -I'm sorry what happen to 24 hour butler service to get you anything you need!! that night we only received one meal I rang to see where the other meal was only to be told very rudely that what I ordered wasn't on the menu - it was as I was looking at the menu on the TV - I was told that they would see what they could do - nothing arrived. To top of all off the cruise was cancelled due to low water But to Scenics credit they did refund us which we appreciate. I am writing this to let you know that we where looking forward this trip That I personally have dreamed of doing for years and we bitterly disappointed and I'm sorry I will not recommend Scenic to anyone thinking of doing a Europe river cruise We paid 5 star price for a 3 star cruise

Major concern with Scenic’s actions

I have a major concern I would like to bring to your attention. My partner & I conducted a RAT test (which was negative) prior to departing Darwin on 20 June, on a Scenic Tour of Top End & Kimberley. Unfortunately, my partner was COVID positive by a RAT test when we reached Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel on 22/6. Once we advised the Tour Director, Mark of our circumstances he told a web of lies to everyone. 1). He told Management of the hotel that we had a family emergency and were leaving the tour to return home. 2). He told the remaining passengers on the bus, that we were leaving the tour because of a family emergency. 3). They then proceeded through NT & WA, with the indigenous communities being put at risk because I believe my partner caught COVID from someone on the bus. I have followed up with Scenic that they have complete disregard for everyone with these lies they are happy to tell. My concern is the fact when we left our room at the Mercure Crocodile Hotel, two young men then went inside to clean the room. We then sat in the hotels reception waiting for a lift back to Darwin for flight home as we were unable to get suitable accommodation to isolate. I’m angry that a “so called” reputable company can get away with these lies when we were completely honest. I believe you should be aware of this indiscretion by Scenic Tours.

Only fair-weather friends.

You never know more about a company than when something goes wrong. Covid hit, and Scenic put the walls up. Where customers who were cancelled (the company cancelled, not the paying public) have to fight protracted battles through consumer and tribunal systems to get a refund - which was stated in Scenic’s own Ts and Cs. Scenic have rejigged their Ts and Cs which manifestly favour themselves, and virtually remove all option of a refund. Surely this is in contravention of consumer law? If I order a product and the company doesn’t deliver, I’m entitled to a refund UNLESS it’s Scenic, in which my money is kept with them for a couple of years. They’re keen to tout their Australian origins, but the concept of mateship has passed them by. The battle to recoup our money costs time, money, and mental health. They couldn’t care less. They estimate up to 6 months to repay customers. However, the majority of customers paid them promptly, and if we’d said ‘we’ll get to it later’ they would have cancelled and kept our deposit. If they get customers in the future, I would: (joke! Would never use a company this unethical again) negotiate the Ts and Cs so it’s equitable. They cannot hold all the cards. Pay using a method you can obtain a chargeback with in the off-chance they cancel and you have to jump through hoops to get your money back. I’m bitter and poorer for dealing with them. Add insult to injury: comment on their social media, and they remove or hide it. Heaven forbid anyone should think they’re not amazing!

Very disappointed with the Grand…

Very disappointed with the Grand Australia tour. (For UK guests on, Poor communication beforehand, things are changed because Australia has not fully re-started (according to the Tour manager) and we have missed out on some things. We’re very disappointed with this trip overall. It is not the luxury experience we’d expected. Very little is included once you’re on the tour, very few meals, slow porterage, very few trips/activities. With very few exceptions (Kangaroo Dundee, School of the Air and RFDS), it seems like the Free choices offered are almost the only trips. Lots of things require pre-booking independently and you need a good level of fitness to be able to join lots of the trips, as most need you to walk between 10-20 mins to join them, where you’ll be left in your own with people from other groups/independent travellers and be expected to find your way back to your hotel on you own. It seems like Scenic are cutting back, and paring things down to the minimum. We’re not as busy as I’d expect to be, and things, so far, seem to be badly timed so we waste time and reduce our chances of getting the most out of this beautiful country. Again, lots of people grumbling and several first-time guests say this will be their last. We’d booked to go on the Camel riding trip in Uluru. What we didn’t realise was that the camels are close to the resort. As the resort is 20km away, the view from the camels would be quite poor. I was able to swap to a dawn view of Uluru and had an informative morning, and a short walk. I could have taken the camel trek as we were back by 8.30. Apparently, camels cost 80AUD. Maybe that could have been thought about by Scenic. Those who had chosen the camel ride had thought they would go very close to this iconic sight - the highlight of the tour and, whilst they enjoyed the ride, didn’t get close to the site. But they did get a chance to go in the bus in the afternoon to get almost as close as the trek and dawn group managed to get. Again, maybe this could have been explained properly. The sunset experience was a disaster. No one arrived to set up our drinks and nibbles whilst we enjoyed the sunset. We were offered a drink with dinner to make up for it, but all felt this was insulting and we pushed for drinks with dinner (dinner is around 89AUD pp). It was insulting as Scenic say they offer unique experiences… and we stood by groups which included tours by Saga who thoroughly enjoyed the copious bottles of champagne brought by the same hotel group who were supposed to be organising our own celebration, and laughed at our discomfort. We certainly felt like the poor relations, despite paying over £2k pp more. In Alice Springs, Brownie’s bus always had lots of water - but we were otherwise expected to buy our own throughout the tour. Brownie was a far better guide than our own - far more informative and pleasant to listen to. Melbourne- Crowne Promenade Excellent room. No complementary bottles or water jugs in room. Fridge was full of products to buy (small bottle of water 5AUD). Coffee was decent, but tray not replenished. Nice dressing gown. TV dreadful - movies were all pay to view. Good breakfast. But - only given one free choice activity plus the Promenade dining. Don’t do Yarra River cruise as a free choice - it’s easy to do from the hotel during the free day. People loved the Penguin trip and I deeply regret missing it. To do the cruise independently, it would cost around 59AUS, whereas the trip to see the islands is much longer, is more difficult to do independently, and costs around 179AUD. The tour manager walked us down to the trips, but we had to make our own way back. Promenade dining - there’s a 95AUD allowance, which is almost impossible to dine without paying an additional amount. Cost cutting seems to reign supreme . No transfers are made for almost any of the trips (fine if you can walk 15- 20 mins easily) and find your own way back. We are not given tours of any of the places early on, so we can’t see much without finding out for ourselves. In far too many places, we miss so much because we’re not given a free walking tour or bus tour. In Melbourne, we had to pay an extra 60 or so AUD for a walking tour in the free day. This is not what we expected. Very few meals are included, and there seems to be problems booking places for restaurants. Descriptions of free choice trips aren’t always accurate. I do think Scenic could make a note about how long they last, the approximate start and end times, and if some options are easy to arrange for free time. It seems as if Scenic have cut back on activities and guests have to do a lot more for themselves (at extra cost). Now, this isn’t a problem for some, but others budget carefully to experience luxury for a few weeks of the year, and might not expect large additional expenses once on the trip. Many won’t go with Scenic again.

If you’ve ever wanted to dive into the culture of the Vikings or explore what makes people in the Nordic region the so-called happiest on earth, you could do a lot worse than book a Scandinavian cruise.

Scandinavia—and Norway in particular—is an expensive place to travel around, so a cruise can make financial sense for those seeking an introduction to the region. For one price, you get your travel, accommodation, meals, and entertainment covered.

Such a trip offers the opportunity to sample various Scandinavian travel highlights , whether you prefer the Scandinavian capitals, the stunning Norwegian fjords, or soaking up the atmosphere of beautiful islands and historic ports in the Baltic Sea.

Popular Scandinavian Cruise Itineraries

Many different types of itinerary can be advertised as Scandinavian cruises. Typically, they focus on the Nordic capital cities. Some may also include the highlights of the Baltic Sea region, including the Baltic countries and ports in the north of Germany and Poland.

With popular Norwegian fjords cruises together with midnight sun and northern lights tours to the north of Norway also available, there is a lot of diversity in Scandinavian cruises.

Scandinavian Capitals : Cruise itineraries starting in the U.K. or Germany and calling in at two or even all three of Oslo, Stockholm, and Copenhagen have long been popular.

Baltic Sea : Longer Scandinavian itineraries often include stops at Baltic Sea islands and ports. The beautiful Estonian capital city, Tallinn, or the Latvian capital, Riga, are particular highlights, as are ports on the northern coastline of Germany and Poland.

For those interested in Viking history, look out for smaller ship itineraries featuring Visby on the wonderful island of Gotland .

One such trip is this 12-night itinerary from Celebrity Cruises, which includes a visit to both Visby and Tallinn. Other highlights include a visit to Stockholm and Copenhagen, including an overnight stop in the latter.

The old city walls of Visby on Gotland island, a popular cruise port.

Norwegian Fjords : By far the most variety can be found in the Norwegian fjords region , with almost all major cruise lines operating at least some itineraries here. Although port calls in Flåm and Geiranger will soon be severely limited, many alternative ports will still be able to welcome some of the world’s largest cruise ships.

Whether you prefer the action-packed ships of Royal Caribbean or MSC, or the smaller ships that can sail along narrower fjords, there will be a Norwegian fjords itinerary for you.

Following the recent rise in popularity of the region as a cruising destination, the fjords season has extended, with trips available as early as April and as late as September.

British line P&O Cruises operates its relatively new megaship Iona in the fjords region for much of that period, with regular departures from Southampton on a popular 7-day itinerary.

Midnight Sun : Although all summer cruises in the region will experience long summer days, specific midnight sun itineraries set sail for the far north of Norway to let guests experience the thrill of being outside with the sun in the sky at midnight. Many of these trips visit Honningsvåg, which allows guests to travel by bus to the North Cape.

Northern Lights : In recent years, Scandinavia—or more specifically Norway—has become a year-round cruising destination thanks to the growth in popularity of northern lights cruises .

These itineraries can be found heading north of the Arctic Circle between October and early April.

Planning Tips For Scandinavian Cruises

Cruising in Northern Europe offers a fantastic variety of excursions and experiences, from historical city tours to adrenaline-filled outdoor adventures.

The region’s love of the outdoors lifestyle means active experiences are easy to find, both through cruise line excursions and independent operators.

The high levels of English comprehension across the region means booking your own activities and exploring ports independently is much easier than in many other parts of the world. Even so, look for independent tours that take place earlier in the day to reduce any time-related risk.

No matter when you visit Scandinavia, pack for all weathers. The height of summer can be marred by heavy rainfall, while it’s possible to get sunburnt in the snow-covered conditions of February and March.

Pack a versatile wardrobe. Layered clothing accommodates the region's variable weather, while specialized gear might be necessary for specific excursions.

Cruising And Sustainability

Prospective travelers should be aware of environmental concerns associated with cruising in this pristine region. The industry is moving towards sustainability, with initiatives to introduce zero-emission vessels in sensitive areas, particularly the UNESCO-listed Norwegian fjords .

Some local initiatives protesting against cruise travel have also gathered momentum, so cruisers should be aware of these issues before setting foot ashore.
