Locations from the spin off movies about magical beasts with Eddie Redmayne and Jude Law are also featured in the tour.

Harry Potter in London: The Top Harry Potter Filming Locations in London

Last updated: April 30, 2023 . Written by Laurence Norah - 11 Comments

Jess and I are both fans of Harry Potter . Jess has already written the definitive guide to Harry Potter locations in Edinburgh and in Scotland , and on a recent trip to London we decided we should do the same for London.

Hence this post, which aims to be a comprehensive guide to finding Harry Potter in London, listing Harry Potter London filming locations, Harry Potter London walking tours and even the film studio where the majority of the Harry Potter films were shot!

Unlike Edinburgh, London was actually used as a filming location for many of the scenes from the Harry Potter movies, so you can visit actual sights that appear in the Harry Potter movies. Which is pretty cool!

Before reading further, be aware that this post does contain some minor spoilers for the Harry Potter movies and books. So if you’ve somehow not read the books or watched the films, now would be a good time to catch up. Otherwise, let’s wave our wands and get on with our guide to finding Harry Potter in London!

Which Harry Potter Movies were Filmed in London?

Every Harry Potter movie has scenes that were filmed in London. Locations range from Leadenhall Market (the entrance to Diagon Alley) through to Kings Cross Station (home of platform 9 3/4 and boarding point of the Hogwarts Express).

As you can imagine therefore, there are a lot of locations from the movies that you’ll find across the city, and our guide will help you do just that!

Guide to Finding Harry Potter in London

Below are some of our favourite places and ways to find Harry Potter in London, including the majority of the major filming locations for the Harry Potter movies.

Some of the locations will be instantly recognisable to fans, others might take a bit of imagination, but we think they’re all worth tracking down!

1. Walking Tour or Bus Tour of Harry Potter London Locations

One of the most popular ways to find Harry Potter in London, if you don’t want to figure it all out yourself (or don’t have the time to do so), is to take a guided  walking tour of the Harry Potter filming locations like this .

While this won’t include everything in the list below, it will include many of the highlights, and the guide will bring the locations to life with still images of the scenes and information on how it was transformed for the filming, to help you visualise everything better, and really see Harry Potter in London.

There are a few companies offering Harry Potter walking tours of London. This is a well rated Harry Potter walking tour option that covers many of the major Harry Potter locations in London, and is worth checking out.

If you’re thinking of getting a London Pass for your time in London, then we recommend checking out the Harry Potter tours offered by Brit Movie tour (the walking tour is currently free with the London Pass ) and London Walks (discounted with London Pass).

2. London Zoo – Reptile House

In the heart of Regent’s Park, a little way north of central London, is London Zoo – the world’s oldest scientific zoo. But you’re not here for history – you’re here to know what the Harry Potter connection is.

Harry Potter in London - Reptile House

Well, of course, it was in the Reptile House at London Zoo that Harry sets a Burmese python free in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. This scene was filmed on location in the Reptile House, and the actual enclosure used is home to the zoo’s black mamba. Which you probably don’t want to try and set free. Note that whilst you do have to pay to get into London Zoo, you can get in for free if you have a London Pass .

3. Lambeth Bridge: The Knight Bus Bridge

Remember when Harry Potter takes the awesome triple decker night bus in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban ? As well as handy features that you don’t get on other London buses, including beds, candles, instant hails and super-fast speeds, the Knight Bus is also able to compress itself so as to avoid muggle traffic.

Harry Potter in London - Lambeth Bridge

In one notable scene, the Knight Bus squeezes itself between two standard double decker buses. And this scene takes place on Lambeth Bridge, which is the bridge upstream from Westminster Bridge.

4. Leadenhall Market: Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley

Whilst much of the Diagon Alley scenes were shot in a studio, a number of real life London locations were also used as Diagon Alley filming locations, and you can visit these quite easily.

The first of these Diagon Alley filming locations was Leadenhall market, a beautiful old covered market in the City of London, which actually dates from the 14th century, making it one of the oldest markets in the city.

Harry Potter Filming Location London - Leadenhall Market

Leadenhall Market was used as the entrance to the Leaky Cauldron in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. More specifically, the door to an opticians shop in Bulls Head passage was used as the Leaky Cauldron entrance.

5. Borough Market: Also Diagon Alley!

In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkhaban, the entrance to Diagon Alley’s Leaky Cauldron moved from the real world location of Leadenhall Market to Borough Market. Well, it is magical after all!

Harry Potter Filming Location London - Borough Market

In the film, after his ride on the Knight Bus, Harry disembarks in Borough Market at what is in real life the “Chez Michele” flower shop, and walks into the Leaky Cauldron pub.

The remainder of the scenes for the Leaky Cauldron were filmed on a set at the Warner Bros Studio. While you’re at Borough Market though, pick up something to eat – there are lots of excellent food vendors here where you can get something to suit all palates!

6. Scotland Place: Harry Potter’s Ministry of Magic

Whilst it is a bit tricky as a non-wizard to get into the Ministry of Magic, you can still visit the location in the films where magic wielders would enter this Ministry. This is found in Westminster, snuggled up against real-life government buildings, which seems appropriate.

Harry Potter in London - Scotland Place

The location is the intersection of Scotland Place and New Scotland Yard. In the movie Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince , Harry and Mr Weasley enter a phone box which serves as the entrance to the Ministry of Magic. Unfortunately, this phone box was just a prop and never existed at this location in real life.

Still, you can imagine it being there, and you’ll most likely spot some of London’s Harry Potter walking tours here.

7. Australia House: Harry Potter’s Gringotts Bank

Gringotts! Who wouldn’t want to visit a goblin run wizard bank with vaults guarded by a dragon? Well, sadly, that’s not quite possible. As it is, you can take a look at the building that was used for Gringotts – the grand Australia House, which sits on the Strand and was where the interior scenes of Gringotts were filmed.

Harry Potter Filming Location London - Australia House

Australia House, as the name hints, is home to the Australian High Commission, and unfortunately you can’t actually go inside. Still, you can look at it from the outside and know that just beyond the doors is a magical world of marble, chandeliers and goblins, which Harry visits in a number of movies, including Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and in the dramatic scenes in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 .

8. Westminster Tube

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix , Harry and Mr. Weasley travel through Westminster tube station, with Mr. Weasley getting somewhat confounded by the Muggle ticket barriers at the station.

Westminster station underground sign

These scenes were filmed over a whole day at Westminster tube station, necessitating it being closed for the full day. Given how busy this station is, that must have caused quite the disruption!

9. The Millennium Bridge: The Harry Potter Bridge in London

The death eater chase sequence in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince was filmed across a great many London locations, with shots including the River Thames and the London Eye .

Most memorable perhaps though is the sequence which has the Millennium Bridge being ripped apart and tossed into the river.

Harry Potter Filming Location London - Millenium Bridge

Thankfully, this was just a piece of movie magic, and the Millennium Bridge still stands, and it is a pedestrian footbridge which links St Paul’s Cathedral with the Tate Modern Museum.

Of course, when the first books were written this bridge didn’t actually exist, (it opened for the Millenium, as the name suggests), but it was in existence by the time the movies and later books were published.

10. Kings Cross: Harry Potter’s train station in London

How do you get to Hogwarts? Why, you take a train from Platform 9 and 3/4 at Kings Cross station of course! The scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets were filmed on location at Kings Cross station, actually between platforms four and five.

Harry Potter Filming Location London - Kings Cross Station

Of course, you’ll struggle to actually find a real Platform 9 and 3/4 at Kings Cross station today. For a long while there was a trolley located in the wall near platforms nine, however, as it became so popular, it was moved, and can now be found in the main concourse of Kings Cross station , next to a Harry Potter store .

You can have your photo taken pushing the trolley “through” the wall, although be aware that as this is probably the most famous Harry Potter location in London, queues can be lengthy! Lines can be 1 hour to 2 hours long to take a photo so be prepared.

Don’t panic if you don’t get your shot here though, if you happen to visit the Warner Bros Studio tour (see below), they have a row of trolleys stuck in walls, just ready for you to get the perfect photo!

11. St. Pancras

Those film makers are tricky folks. When Harry arrives at “Kings Cross” to catch the Hogwarts train, the exterior shots are actually of St. Pancras, which just happens to look a bit nicer.

Harry Potter Filming Location London - St Pancras

St. Pancras was also where the magical Ford Anglia takes to the skies in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets . It’s just next door to Kings Cross, so worth the wander across.

12. Claremont Square, Islington: Harry Potter’s Order of the Phoenix HQ

Whilst you’re in the Kings Cross area, you might want to take the ten minute walk up to Claremont Square.

Harry Potter Filming Location London - Claremont Square

This was the setting for 12 Grimmauld Place, which any Harry Potter fan will of course recognise as being the home of Sirius Black, and the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix & Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 .

13. Piccadilly Circus

Continuing with  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 , Piccadilly Circus was a key location in the film when Ron, Hermione, and Harry narrowly avoided being hit by a London bus.

London bus picadilly circus

Piccadilly circus is of course a hugely busy and well known location, which made for a challenging real world filming location. Definitely a must on your tour of Harry Potter filming locations in London!

14. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Whilst not a filming location, the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play is a very popular attraction for Harry Potter fans in London.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child London

This has been showing in London’s west end since 2016 at the Palace Theatre. It has since expanded to locations around the world, including Broadway in New York.

The play is set nineteen years after the events of the final movie in the series, and tells the story of Harry Potter as an adult, and his son Albus, who is just starting at Hogwarts. The play is told over two parts, each of which is over 2.5 hours long. It is recommended that you book tickets for both parts consecutively.

The show has won multiple awards and is hugely popular, making tickets tricky to come by. If this is on your to-do list, you will definitely want to book your tickets in advance, which you can do on the official site here .

15.  House of MinaLima

The House of MinaLima is a gallery which showcases a lot of the graphic art that features in the Harry Potter world. So whilst this also isn’t a filming location, it is definitely worth a visit.

MinaLima is the the design team made up of Miraphora Mina and Eduardo Lima. They started collaborating in 2002, and were responsible for creating the graphic style that featured in all the Harry Potter movies, as well as the later Fantastic Beasts movies. They have also worked on pieces for the Wizarding World theme park.

They have opened their gallery in SoHo, London, as a gallery where you can explore some of the art they created. It’s free to visit, and they also run free guided tours (no booking required) on Mondays and Tuesday.

See more about MinaLima and their opening hours, here .

16. The Real Birthplace of Harry Potter

If you search for the birthplace of Harry Potter, you will come up with a range of locations. There’s even a cafe in Edinburgh which has long claimed to be the birthplace of Harry Potter.

Thankfully, the rumours about where Harry Potter was born, or at least, was first penned, were laid to rest by JK Rowling herself. In 2020, she stated that she first put pen to paper on the first Harry Potter book in a private flat near Clapham Junction train station. You’ll find this in the district of Battersea, London.

Currently there is nothing to mark this flat, which is above some shops on a high street. You can see the location here on Google Maps. Eagle eyed fans will also notice that a nearby lane is called “Severus Rd”, which may be the inspiration for the Professor of Potions first name.

It’s not really worth the visit, but hey, if you are a true fan wanting to tick off all the locations, be my guest.

17. The Warner Bros. Studio Tour – The Making of Harry Potter

Last on our list of Harry Potter filming locations in London is the Warner Bros Studio, home of the Warner Bros Studio Tour . This is actually a little way outside the city, near Watford Junction, but as it’s such a fabulous place to visit we definitely wanted to include it in our list. If you only do one thing related to Harry Potter in London, make it this.

Harry Potter Filming Location London - Warner Bros Studio Tour

This film studio was where all eight of the Harry Potter films were actually filmed, and they have retained a great many of the sets, clothing, and props from the movies. You can visit the Great Hall, the railway station, numerous filming locations from inside Hogwarts, the Forbidden Forest, and even Diagon Alley.

You’ll learn many of the secrets of how the films were made, have the opportunity to drink Butterbeer, and generally get all the Harry Potter magic you could imagine. There are also places to stop and eat and a giant gift shop full of all things Harry Potter.

As I said, if you only do one thing on this list of Harry Potter things to do in London, we definitely recommend making it this one – we really enjoyed our visit and learning all about how the films were made.

The visit lasts for about three hours and is largely self-guided, so you can take as much or little time as you like. There’s lots to see and do though, so we’d suggest three hours is a good amount to plan for, not including travel time.

Harry Potter Filming Location London - Warner Bros Studio Tour

Speaking of travel time, you have a number of options for getting to and buying tickets for the Warner Bros Studio London Tour.

The easiest option is just to book a tour from central London . This handles all your return transport from central London as well as admission entry to the Warner Bros Studio itself. See prices and book your trip here .

Alternatively, you can make your own way to the studio. Before you do that, you have to buy tickets in advance as tickets are not available on site. Also be aware that the tour times can book up well in advance, so advance booking is essential.

You have a couple of options for getting to the Harry Potter studio tour from London: you can drive yourself, or you can take public transportation.

If you are driving yourself or taking public transport, you’ll need to book your ticket directly on the official website . Then if you are driving, it is free to park at the studio as long as you already have your booking confirmation.

If you are taking public transport to the Warner Bros Studio Tour, the easiest (and cheapest) way is to get to Euston station in London and then take the train to Watford Junction.

From Watford Junction train station there’s a regular shuttle bus to the studio which takes around fifteen minutes, and at time of writing, costs £2.50 return.

Where to Stay in London

London has a wide range of accommodation options, ranging from hostels through to self catered apartments and seriously upscale hotels.

There’s something to suit every budget, with en-suite double rooms starting from around $80 a night. Here are some tips for getting the best deal on your accommodation, whatever your budget.

Our favourite way to find the best deals on accommodation is booking.com. They’re easy to use, usually have the best prices, and have everything from hotels to apartments.  Here are their London listings  for you to take a look.

For examples of properties at different price points that are centrally located, here are some options:

  • The Walrus Bar and Hostel  – A well reviewed centrally located hostel
  • The Z hotel in Shoreditch  – excellent value in a lively and popular part of London with great dining options
  • The  Resident Victoria Hotel  – a well reviewed and centrally located hotel offering excellent value for money
  • The Savoy  – true luxury as close to the city centre as you can get!

If you prefer an apartment, then we recommend either  Plum Guide  or  Vrbo .

Plum Guide carefully curate their listings so their options tend to be of a very high quality whilst still being available at a range of price points. We’ve stayed at a number of their properties around the world, and you can see our  review of the Plum Guide here . See their  listings for London here .

If you can’t find what you want from the above choices, or you want some new options to try out, we wrote a whole post on the  best alternatives to AirBnB  which you should check out!

Between these options, you should find the best prices and places to stay for your trip, as well as a good selection of reviews and feedback to help you make an informed decision.

We also have a complete guide to where to stay in London . That has over 60 recommendations for where to stay across a number of areas in London for all budgets. It also has tips on which neighbourhoods to stay in and things to know before booking a property. Well worth a read.

Very helpful for anyone wanting to see as many places as possible on a short visit. Another small correction: the snake Harry frees is a Boa Constrictor from Brazil, rather than a python from Burma.

28th March 2022 at 10:10 am

Thanks very much! So the book version definitely has a Boa Constrictor from Brazil, but in the films this is replaced with a Burmese Python. If you listen to the dialog in the film, Harry asks the snake if he misses his family in Burma, and the label refers to his habitat being in SE Asia. I’m not sure why this was changed for the film as it seems a strange detail to change, but there we are! Maybe the producers preferred the look of a Burmese Python?

All the best

Really enjoyed your post, a useful summary! Have you got a similar one for Oxford, given the variety of scenes shot in different places there?

Just a couple of suggested corrections –

1) Australia House is the Australian High Commission in London in real life, not an Embassy, as Australia is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, all of whose diplomatic missions are therefore known as High Commissions;

2) You state that the Millennium Bridge in London did not exist when the Harry Potter books were written, but it certainly was when the Half-Blood Prince was published in 2005 – as the name suggests, the bridge was opened in the Millennium year, 2000.

16th February 2022 at 2:56 pm

Thanks for your comment, glad you enjoyed the post! Also, thanks for your two points, I’ve amended the post accordingly 🙂 In terms of a post for Oxford, that is on my to-do list as we have visited all the locations in the city. However, for now, you will find most of them referenced in our guide to Harry Potter filming locations in the UK .

Thanks again!

The Top 15 Must-Visit Harry Potter Filming Locations In London

Posted on Last updated: November 13, 2021

Every Harry Potter fan knows that a trip to England’s capital means visiting some of the most famous Harry Potter movie locations.

After all, the iconic movie saga was shot all over England, with some of the most famous scenes taking place in London.

Living in London I don’t often head out to do touristy things, but occasionally when friends from Italy are visiting or the sun is out, I love to head out and explore London!

In preparation for visiting the Warner Bros Studio in London (where they have some of the sets and behind the scenes of the Harry Potter movies) me and my flatmate did a Harry Potter movie marathon (it only took us three days after all) and decided to venture around London to see some of the movie locations in person.

In this guide I’ve listed some of the must visit Harry Potter filming locations in London, that you can easily see by yourself. These Harry Potter London sites will make you feel like you’re in the movies!

  • 1 Harry Potter Tours London
  • 2.1 The London Zoo
  • 2.2 Leadenhall Market (Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley Scene, London)

Harry Potter Tours London

If you follow the locations I’ve listed in this article you’ll be able to see all the main Harry Potter highlights in London.

However if you prefer to have someone take you around and tell you more about the movies and locations you can do a tour.

There are a variety of great tours to choose from depending on your preference. If you’d like to stay active and see many other sites along the way, then a Harry Potter walking tour is right up your alley.

If you want to do something a little different, seeing a little bit extra and while taking in some stunning sites from the canal, then a Harry Potter boat tour is a great idea!

Whether you take a tour or venture to all the best Harry Potter places in London on your own, you’re sure to have a great time.

However, once you see all the locations dotted around London, one tour you simply must take is the Harry Potter Warner Bros. Studio tour .

In the studio tour, you’ll see all the sets, props and costumes used in the Harry Potter movies. You’ll also get the chance to step into the Gryffindor common room and walk in the footsteps of Harry Potter himself.

You’ll walk part of the famed Diagon alley location and see the storefronts so prevalent in the movies. Ollivander’s Wand Shop, Flourish and Blotts, and Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes are all still standing for you to investigate.

You’re guaranteed no less than 4-hours in the studio, which makes for plenty of time to explore and take photos. This is one of the must-visit Harry Potter sites in London!

Harry Potter film locations in London

Visiting recognisable locations from the Harry Potter films is a must-do for any Harry Potter fan! Here are a few of the locations you simply can’t miss in London!

The London Zoo

Featured in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone , the London Zoo is located just north of central London, and is the oldest scientific zoo in the world.

In 1831, the animals from the Tower of London Menagerie were transferred to the zoo’s collection, and from there the zoo grew immensely.

In 1847, it was opened to the public so that Londoners and tourists alike could appreciate the magnificence of the lovely creatures.

The Reptile House located in the zoo is where Harry set the Burmese python free. The enclosure used in the film is now home to a black mamba.

You can expect to pay a small entry fee for access to the London Zoo, but I recommend you purchase London Zoo tickets online , as you’ll get a discounted rate.

Click here for the exact location.

Leadenhall Market (Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley Scene, London)

Many of the Diagon Alley scenes were shot in the Warner Bros. Studio, however, there are a few that were shot in other filming locations around the city. One of the most easily accessible of these is the Leadenhall Market.

It’s an old covered market in London city that dates back to the 14th century and has an incredible amount of history, as well as being one of the most Instagrammable places in London .

Look for the optician’s shop in Bulls Head passage. This is the location that was used as the entrance to the Leaky Cauldron London in the movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone .

Lambeth Bridge London

Lambeth Bridge is a road traffic and footbridge that crosses the River Thames.

The bridge was once a suspension bridge, but its safety was fairly questionable and was used mainly as a pedestrian bridge. It was then rebuilt as a road bridge in 1928.

In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban , Harry takes the triple-decker Knight Bus when he runs away from home after making his aunt fly away (remember that scene? That was a good one).

There is a scene where the Knight Bus squeezes in between two double-decker buses, which was filmed on Lambeth Bridge.

It’s one of the less popular Harry Potter sights in London but is still well worth the visit! You’ll find it just upstream from Westminster Bridge in London.

Borough Market Harry Potter

Borough Market has a buzzing atmosphere that gives you a sense of the British culture so deeply embedded in the lives of Londoners. Walking through the many passageways and in between the stalls is a real adventure!

In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Diagon Alley’s entrance to the Leaky Cauldron moved from Leadenhall Market to Borough Market.

Find what is now the Chez Michele flower shop to see where Harry enters the Leaky Cauldron pub in the movie. While walking through the Borough Market, be sure to take your time and browse the stalls.

There’s a wonderful selection of delicious food and interesting trinkets for sale that would be a shame to miss, it’s one of my favourite street food markets in London .

Kings Cross Station (Harry Potter’s road to Hogwarts)

Kings Cross Station is one of the main train stations in London. The station opened in 1852 and had to expand a few times in the 19th century to accommodate all the unexpected traffic.

Visit the famous platform 9 and ¾ location to discover exactly how Harry got to Hogwarts.

The scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone , as well as Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets , were both filmed at Kings Cross Station between platform 4 and 5 (not 9 and 10)!

You can’t visit the exact platform without a valid train ticket, but there is a spot further inside the train station where they set up a luggage trolley disappearing into the wall, where you can take photos.

Be sure to snap a few pictures of the location to keep them safe in your memory bank. This is one of the Harry Potter London locations that you simply must see while you’re in town.

You can’t afford to miss one of the most iconic scene locations in film history!

Westminster Tube

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix , Harry and Mr Weasley take a train to Westminster. All the scenes from the movie that appear to be Westminster Station, are indeed Westminster Station.

This is one of the most recognisable Harry Potter film locations in London and definitely deserves a visit.

During the filming of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix , Westminster Station had to be shut down for an entire day while filming took place, which caused a lot of disruption.

Luckily, the incredible movie made it all worthwhile!

Scotland Place (Harry Potter’s entrance to the Ministry of Magic)

In the movie Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince , Harry and Mr Weasly enter the Ministry of Magic through a telephone booth in the real-life area of Scotland Place.

The building that was used in the film is squashed between two government buildings.

You’ll find the building between Scotland Place and New Scotland Yard, but unfortunately, the telephone booth was a prop, so don’t expect to find it here.

You’ll more than likely run into one of the many Harry Potter tour groups here, as they make their way around London.

St Pancras (Harry Potter’s Kings Cross Station Scene)

St Pancras is a high-speed railway terminus and provides transport to other countries including Belgium, France and the Netherlands.

St Pancras is right next door to Kings Cross Station and together they form the main transport hub in the UK.

St Pancras was actually used in the exterior shots as if it were Kings Cross Station. We can only assume this is because the building is far more beautiful and makes the scene look a little more magical.

You’ll also notice that in the movie Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets , St Pancras acts as a backdrop to the scene when the Ford Anglia starts to fly.

If you’re a fan of wonderfully intricate architecture, this should be on your must-visit list of Harry Potter spots in London.

Claremont Square (Harry Potter’s Order of the Phoenix headquarters)

Any Harry Potter fan will immediately recognise the home of Sirius Black, and the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix.

This can be found in the now-famed Claremont Square. The area was featured in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix , as well as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 .

The setting was known as 12 Grimmauld Place in the movies. Of course, that’s not its real name but we can only imagine.

Piccadilly Circus

Piccadilly Circus is an intersection, in the West End of London, that connects the main roads. It’s located close to many of the biggest shopping and entertainment centres in London.

Piccadilly Circus is as famous in real-life as it is in the movie. It‘s featured in the film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 , when Hermione, Harry and Ron are nearly run over by a bus.

The fact that they managed to film in such a busy location is mind-blowing! It’s just as busy in real life as it appears in the Harry Potter movies, and crossing the street can prove to be a challenge.

This is one of the most famous Harry Potter locations in London!

Australia House: Gringotts Bank London

The set of Gringotts Wizarding Bank was filmed at Australia House, the Australian Embassy in London. Although you’re not allowed inside without a truly valid reason, the building is just as grand from the outside as it is from the inside.

Statues line the roof and the visit can be appreciated by anyone who has the faintest interest in architecture. I highly recommend you visit as it’s only a 6-minute walk from Covent Garden and very easy to find!

Charing Cross Road

Charing Cross Road is famous all across London for its wide selection of bookshops at the edge of the theatre district.

There are a number of great theatres in Charing Cross Road, but its main attraction is the many second-hand bookstores that call this area their home.

In the movies, the Inn for Wizards is located on this street and serves as a gateway between the non-wizarding world and Diagon Alley. This area is located in Muggle Street of Charing Cross Road.

This is well worth a visit, even if you don’t recognise it from the movies. Cute stores and cafes are scattered around the neighbourhood and can be great fun to explore!

St Paul’s Cathedral

St Paul’s Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral that acts as the seat of the Bishop of London and the mother church of the diocese of London. The church marks the highest point in the city and is dedicated to the Apostle Paul.

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince , the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral was used as a backdrop in the scene when the Death Eaters attack Millenium Bridge.

Taking a photo with the dome in the background is a must-do activity for any true Harry Potter fan!

While you’re there, take a tour of St Paul’s Cathedral to learn about the history of London, and view the 3 separate galleries within the cathedral. You’ll also get to head to the roof to get a panoramic view of London!

Millenium Bridge

Which leads on to our next famous Harry Potter movie location; Millenium Bridge!

At the start of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince the Death Eaters attack Millenium Bridge in London, to show the return of Voldemort and the incoming evile of the movies.

It’s a steel suspension bridge that lends itself very well to collapsing during the attack. In my opinion it’s also one of the most photogenic places in London.

Other Must-Visit Harry Potter Things in London

While the filming locations are recognisable, they’re not the only Harry Potter locations. There are plenty of other epic things to do in London !

Cecil Court

While Cecil Court isn’t actually a Harry Potter film location, it’s definitely a must-visit for any true Harry Potter fan!

It’s a road that leads off from Charing Cross Road and is said to be J.K Rowling’s favourite street in London. It’s also thought to be the inspiration for Diagon Alley!

Cecil Court is home to many obscure book shops including stores selling books exclusively about witchcraft and magic! You’ll also get the chance to visit the bookstore where the very first Harry Potter book was sold.

Goodwin’s Court

Goodwins Court is a small alleyway that dates back to 1627. The alley is lined with small shops and really comes to life at night when the original gaslamp street lights are lit.

The small alley was J.K Rowling’s inspiration for Knockturn Alley in her books. As soon as you see it, you’ll realise exactly how this small street could inspire an imagination.

Be sure to take your camera along to this Harry Potter destination as you’ll want to keep it locked in your memory bank.

Harry Potter Locations in Oxford

Oxford is home to a few more Harry Potter locations worth visiting. It’s less than an hour’s drive from London and you can easily visit Oxford on a day trip from London.

Christ Church

Christ Church is one of the most popular and most frequently visited colleges in Oxford . The college is home to the Tudor Great Hall, which was used as inspiration for the Hogwarts Great Hall set.

There are other parts of the college that were actually in the film Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone . Visit the Grand Stairway to see where Mr McGonagall meets Ron, Hermione and Harry for the very first time.

The hallways were also used for the scene where Hermione shows Harry the Quidditch trophy that his father won back in the day.

The architecture of the college itself is absolutely stunning and is well worth exploring while you’re in the Oxford area. Although the college is often left out from Harry Potter tours, it’s a must-visit for any true Harry Potter fan.

Bodleian Library

The Bodleian Library was used extensively in many of the Harry Potter movies, making it a visit you won’t want to miss!

The gothic vaulted ceilings were a great fit and worked well in the Hogwarts infirmary throughout the filming of four of the movies.

It was also used in Harry Potter and the Goblets of Fire in the scenes where McGonagall teaches the children to dance.

The Duke Humphrey’s Library, which is a part of the Bodleian Library was used as the Hogwarts Library throughout the films.

With so much of the movies being filmed in this location, it’s definitely worth the visit. The architecture and gothic style of the building makes it all the more interesting to explore!

New College

New College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford. The college was founded in 1379, leaving you wondering “what could be so new about it?” Well, nothing really, except for the students that pass through it.

Its full name is St Mary’s College of Winchester, but that’s quite a mouthful, so the locals call it New College.

New College was used as a filming location in Harry Potter and the Goblets of Fire . You can visit the South Cloisters Walk where young wizards wore “Potter Stinks” badges in the movie.

There are two options for bus transfers:

Victoria/ Baker Street Departures

Kings Cross Station Departures (WBSTL)

I want to book the tickets asap since I have heard they sell out fast. This is for the end of August.

I considered a private car , but it’s twice the price. Thanks in advance!

Apologies. We are hoping to go earlier in the day and it looks like the Victoria station is the only one providing early times. Kings Cross leaves late morning, early afternoon.

If you have any feedback on how to get to the Victoria station from our hotel, it would be helpful. Thank you.

You dont NEED to book the bus transfer package and certainly not a private transfer unless the tickets without transport have already sold out.

It is very easy to get the train to Watford Juunction and then take the free shuttle bus to the studios https://www.wbstudiotour.co.uk/getting-here/

Where would I catch a train to Waterford Junction?

I see early morning tickets starting at 9am for the day we want to go. That is without the package.

Northern line tube from Waterloo to Euston, train from Euston to Watford junction

harry potter bus tour of london locations

If not, think again as you aren’t dealing with an official agent, so you are taking a risk.

Why not take the train? It will cost a lot less than Golden Tours and probably most of the third parties, plus the shuttle bus from Watford Junction is included with your ticket and even the slow trains which come under the TFL-cap are quicker!

harry potter bus tour of london locations

" I am wondering the most convenient and easiest location to pick up the bus transfer to the studios "

What I would do, and I would guess same for most other visitors, is the normal do-it-yourself Studios Tour Tickets costing from £53.50 each.

With the latter you make your way by Tube to London Euston station, then train to Watford Junction station, then the special shuttlebus to the Studios; reverse on the way back. Much cheaper, and much simpler than it might sound to you.

My daughter and her husband did exactly that normal one ('not' the Golden Tours offering) last Wednesday with their two children. The whole family thought it was "Soooo good and impressive. Spent 5 hours there, could have stayed longer if our feet could have taken it"

https://www.wbstudiotour.co.uk/tickets/

The transfer package is hugely expensive. A return from Euston to Watford Junction is c£14 as opposed to about £70 for the coach

Do book ASAP. Any option sells out months in advance

There are two options for bus transfers:

Victoria/ Baker Street Departures

Kings Cross Station Departures (WBSTL)

I want to book the tickets asap since I have heard they sell out fast. This is for the end of August.

I considered a private car , but it’s twice the price. Thanks in advance!

In case this helps:

Departure Points:

Victoria departure:

what3words location: http://eager.play.forks

144 Marylebone Rd, London NW1 5PH – Near Baker Street Station

Click here for directions from Baker Street Station

King's Cross departure:

King's Cross Station , Pancras Road, Bus Stop T, London N1C 4TB
