star-tours-the-adventures-continue

Average Wait Times:  Star Tours can experience variable wait times depending on the day and season. During peak hours, wait times can range from 30 minutes to over an hour.

Height Requirements:  To board Star Tours, guests must be at least 40 inches tall. This requirement ensures the safety and comfort of all riders, as the motion simulator involves dynamic movements that may not be suitable for younger or smaller guests.

Single Rider:  Single Rider is available on this attraction.

Ride Duration:  The total experience, from pre-show to the end of the ride, typically lasts around 20 minutes. This includes the time spent in the queue, the pre-boarding area, the 3D motion simulator experience, and any additional post-show elements.

Genie+ and Lightning Lane:  Genie+ and Lightning Lane are available for this attraction, which provides expedited access to the ride, reducing wait times for those who opt for this premium service.

Rider Switch:  For families with young padawans who may not meet the height requirement, Disney’s Rider Switch service allows one adult to wait with the non-riding child while the rest of the party experiences the attraction. Afterward, the waiting adult and another guest can switch places without having to wait in line again.

Disability Access Services (DAS):  Disneyland is committed to providing a magical experience for all guests. The Disability Access Service (DAS) program is available for those with disabilities, allowing them to obtain return times for attractions, including Star Tours, based on current wait times.

Best Time to Ride:  Weekdays, especially Tuesdays and Wednesdays, tend to see lower attendance, translating to shorter wait times. Additionally, early mornings and late evenings are opportune moments to visit, as crowds are typically thinner during these times. Check out our crowd calendar for best times to visit!

Speeder in space

I remember the first time I went to Disneyland in 1995. Star Tours was the very first attraction I ever went on, and continued to be a tradition for my family as the first attraction we always went on when we went to Disneyland. Of course, since then, a lot of changes have happened, including a total revamp of the attraction into what it is today.

Star Tours, as I’m sure you’ve gathered, is a Star Wars experience where guests are invited to take a tour from planet to planet aboard a starspeeder. Your job is to simply sit and enjoy the ride as the pilot drives you to your destination. Of course, if this actually happened, it would be the most boring attraction ever. So that’s not what happens!

Star Tours Review

The original Star Tours was the same ride every time you took it. Rex was your pilot, a robot with some quirky flaws and a sense for danger and adventure. After this attraction received its revamp, it became a lot more interesting. Rex the pilot was replaced by C3PO (Rex is now found over in Oga’s Cantina in Galaxy’s Edge) and what was once the same every time is now available in over 40 different combinations.

Disney teamed up with Lucasfilm for the revamp and decided to make the attraction 3D, with the ability to tell a different story each time. Basically, there are 4 sections that make up your adventure. A beginning scene which determines how you exit the docking bay, a second scene after coming out of light speed, a transmission message from someone and then a final battle scene that concludes with you docking the ship.

Because there are multiple versions of each of these 4 sections, you could see a different adventure each time you board Star Tours. It’s actually quite fun and keeps things interesting. And since Disney purchased Lucasfilm several years back, they continue to add new scenes from the new Star Wars films as they come out.

Star Tours C3PO

One of the cooler things that happened after the revamp is the inclusion of a Star Tours guest into the story each time you ride. Before the attraction begins, a photo is taken of a randomly selected guest, who is then inserted into the story as a Rebel Spy. They very lightly become the focus of the mission (or some missions) as Star Tours races to deliver the spy safely.

I’ve been the Rebel Spy twice in all my years of riding, and it’s actually pretty fun. They even have a tee-shirt that you can purchase in the shop afterward that says, “I am the Rebel Spy,” or something along those lines.

So here’s what you can expect when you ride Star Tours at Disneyland Park: There are three lines available for this attractions. First is the standby line, which I can’t describe very well at the beginning because I’ve never waited in it. You can expect to wait about 30-45 minutes in this line before being boarded.

The second line is Lightning Lane (LL) and that takes you directly into the main building and past the standby line but through all the same rooms.

The LL line typically takes you right into the second room before you come to a stop, so there’s a decent amount of line that you skip. You can expect to wait about 10-15 minutes before boarding.

The third line is a Single Rider line that they added in 2019. It basically does the same thing as the other 2 lines but it usually much faster. Keep in mind that you’re typically separated from your party when loaded at the gates, though this attraction gives you a better chance of being loaded with someone in your group than most.

Haunted Mansion Ride Review

Once you enter the main building, you’ll weave through one room that features a Starspeeder with R2D2 and C3PO.

Star Tours Attraction Review

You’ll then take a ramp into a second room, where you’ll be entertained by 2 robots, both voiced by the ever-talented Patrick Warburton. From here you’ll be boarded into different gates based on the number of people in your group. Once you arrive at your gate you’ll also be boarded into rows, again, based on the number of people in your group.

You’ll stand here for a little while and watch a video on what’s going on in the hangar as you wait for your Starspeeder to arrive. You’ll also be given some instructions. Once it’s your turn to board, the doors in front of you will open, and you’ll enter the ship and take your seat. Store all your backpacks and jackets under the seat, put your seatbelt on and prepare for a seatbelt check with a Cast Member.

Star Tours Disneyland

Once the seatbelt check is completed, you’ll be advised to put your flight glasses on. The room will go dark after a few seconds, and then the ride begins! C3PO has no idea what’s going on, and you’re about to get into a whole lot of trouble and fun. Since each experience is different, I won’t describe them, but you’ll have fun not matter what.

This is a simulation attraction that has 3D glasses and moves up and down and side to side. If you are prone to motion sickness, you may want to skip riding or take some medicine beforehand.

When your ride is over, you’ll remove your seatbelt and exit the ship. Be sure to turn in your flight glasses and enjoy some Star Wars shopping!

Here’s a video of one of my last experiences with Star Tours at Disneyland :

  • Star Tours is a Lightning Lane attraction, which I would recommend using early in the morning if you really want to go on it, as spots fill up quickly.
  • If you’re looking for a really fast boarding and don’t mind being split up, use the Single Rider line.
  • If you really want to try and be the rebel spy on your adventure, then try sitting in the very back row, about 3-4 seats in from the exit side of the attraction.
  • This attraction does have a height limit, so make sure you plan accordingly with smaller children. Use the Rider Switch if needed.

The BEST in Disney and More!

Star Tours:  The Adventure Continues is located at Echo Lake in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. As you approach Star Tours , you can’t miss the huge AT-AT standing guard outside.  This ride has always had a warning for those who get motion sickness however the newest version seems to bother those with sensitive stomachs even more. Trust us, it’ll be worth taking a Dramamine to visit some of the new locations and characters in this multi-storyline ride!  Expect to see old and new Star Wars favorites liked C3PO, R2D2, Chewbacca, Yoda, Admiral Ackbar, Princess Leia, and maybe even Darth Vadar himself!

  • This attraction is 3D , and  you are seated in a “ship” that is a motion simulator.  You will see some Audio-Animatronics as well as the 3D motion video.
  • This ride has always had a warning for those who get motion sickness;  however the newest version seems to bother those with sensitive stomachs even more.
  • Star Tours is both a 3D and motion simulator experience.  You’ll board a 40 person flight simulator for your ride.
  • The height requirement for this is 40 inches, and guests in a wheelchair or ECV must transfer before boarding.
  • Star Tours does utilize the FastPass system, as well as Rider Switch.
  •  Most times of day you can expect a 20 to 30 minute wait but if you keep your eye on the wait time boards or follow on an app you will see that during meal times or closer to park opening and closing you can usually hop on in half that time!

This high-flying adventure offers all this and much, much more! The new Star Tours is destined to become both a classic and family favorite! You will also visit planets like Naboo, Kashyyyk, Coruscant, and Tatooine.  With over 50 ride scene combinations, you will want to ride again and again so as not to miss anything!  Sometimes you’ll find popular Star Wars characters roaming the area outside of Star Tours-and the Jedi Training Academy is right next to this attraction.

Quick Tip:   As you exit through Tattooine Traders, you’ll find awesome Star Wars merchandise-some of it being one of a kind or limited time for Star Wars Weekends.  Across from the exit, is a speeder bike, which makes for a great photo opportunity.

Overall, we give Star Tours an “A+”.

A Great Attraction, Worth A Moderate-to-Long Wait

Genie+ Lightning Lane Available

When Star Tours originally opened at Disney World in 1989, it offered guests a chance to take a space-tour to the Forest Moon of Endor. Helmed by your first-time pilot Rex, your Starspeeder takes a detour into an epic battle with a Star Destroyer. The motion simulator ride offered thrills for Star Wars fanatics like myself, but it definitely showed its age in the last years of the original iteration.

In 2011, Star Tours was replaced by  Star Tours: The Adventures Continue.  Set in between Episodes III and IV, this new iteration of Star Tours has been renovated, retooled, and reimagined, resulting in one of the  most thrilling and satisfying attractions in all of Walt Disney World . The ride system has been updated with state of the art motion simulation and jaw-dropping HD 3-D visuals. These are some of the best 3-D visuals I’ve ever seen, both in a theme park and in the movie theatre.

This time, C-3PO is your pilot on this ride that spans the galaxy. Star Tours features a unique randomization system that combines 2 different intros, 3 first destinations, 3 messages from iconic Star Wars characters, and 3 finales into one of 54 unique combinations. That makes Star Tours one of the best Walt Disney World rides for repeat visits.

The stunning visuals, thrilling motion simulation, and varying adventures offered by Star Tours: The Adventures Continue makes this easily one of the best rides at Hollywood Studios and all of Disney World. It gave me that rare experience of being transported back to when I was a Star Wars loving kid, riding Star Tours for the first time.

Tips and Trivia

  • Use a FastPass to avoid long lines on this ride.
  • Star Tours is one of the only non-Disney property based rides found at Disney World. Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular and the upcoming Avatar attractions are also based off of non-Disney properties.
  • Be sure to go on this ride more than once! With unique beginnings, middles, and ends, there are 54 different combinations you can experience on Star Tours.
  • This ride is not the roughest when it comes to motion simulators, but be aware that this ride does shake and includes 3D visuals. If you suffer from motion sickness, please take this into account if you are thinking about going on this ride.
  • Stormtroopers/Escape with the Millennium Falcon
  • Darth Vader/Lightsaber volleys
  • Tattooine – Podracing (Episode I)
  • Kashiik – The Wookie Home Planet (Episode III)
  • Hoth – Snow speeders and ATAT Walkers (Episode V)
  • Jakuu – Follow the Millennium Falcon through a crashed Star Destroyer (Episode VII)
  • Princess Leia
  • Admiral Ackbar (It’s a trap!)

Finale Planet

  • Asteroid Field battle with Boba Fett/Death Star under construction

Height Requirements for Disney World Rides – Free Printable Chart

SAVE OR SHARE THIS POST!

There are many rides at Walt Disney World that children (and adults) of all sizes can ride, but it is important to consider how tall guests need to be to ride some of the Disney rides. Before you plan, you will want to know the height requirements for all of the rides at Walt Disney World .

As a member of several affiliate programs, I earn a small commission from qualifying purchases when you click links in this post, at no cost to you.

Disney wants you to not only have a great vacation in the parks but also wants to be sure that you and your family stay safe. That’s why several Disney Park rides have a height minimum that you have to meet in order to ride.

Height Requirements for Swirling Saucers Ride at Hollywood Studios at Disney World

Check Ride height Requirements for Disney before you go

If you are planning your Disney vacation the information can be overwhelming. It’s easy to focus on things like hotel, food, and transportation but don’t forget about planning ahead for the parks. One important thing to consider when planning your park days is what rides your child(run) wants to ride. Then check to see if they meet the height requirement.

Below I’ve included a list of all of the different ride height requirements for rides in Disney World.

Why Does Disney Have Height Requirements for Rides?

The simple answer to this is safety. In order to provide a safe and fun environment, Disney wants to ensure that every guest is safe on the rides. Rides are designed to protect you from any injury, so in order for those safety measures to work you need to fit in the ride properly.

For example, there might be a lap bar or straps that will not fit a small child. Some rides are too rough for smaller children too.

Make sure you’re ready for the heat at Disney World, especially if you are traveling with children. Read my tips and suggestions to help you  stay cool in Disney  World.  Read the post here.

Can I sneak my child onto a Disney ride if they are not tall enough?

No, please don’t try to sneak your child past the Cast Members. They strictly enforce the height requirements to keep everyone safe.

Some rides have fast drops or turns and you want to make sure your child fits in the restraints properly so they are safe.

Height Requirements for Dumbo Ride at Magic Kingdom

What if my child is not able to ride?

If your child does not meet the height requirements you may want to check My Disney Experience to see what other rides are available for your child. It’s always easier to know before your trip what ride your child is eligible to ride to avoid any surprise disappointments.

If you have other family members that want to ride, but you also have some that are not tall enough, you may be able to take advantage of Rider Switch. Rider Switch allows one parent to stay behind with the child or infant while the rest of the party rides the attraction. When they get off the ride the waiting parent gets to take their turn without waiting in line again. You can all the details about Rider Switch on Disney’s site HERE.

Are Disneyland height requirements enforced?

In short (so to speak), yes.

Cast Members will measure guests who appear to be close to the requirement for that attraction and will not allow kids who fall under that height to board. This is for safety reasons.

Children will be measured at every single ride where they appear to be close to the height requirement.

No hand stamps are given after being measured to allow entry on every ride. They’ll be measured every time.

The measurement is done with shoes on, unless high heel shoes are being worn (in which case, Cast Members may ask that shoes be removed).

Adults and older kids can still ride

If you do have somebody in your group who doesn’t meet the Disneyland height requirements, you can still ride using the Rider Switch pass .

This allows your group to split into 2 as the first part of the group rides, then you can swap and let the other part of the group ride.

Rider Switch allows an adult to always be waiting with the child as the other part of the group rides.

So which attractions have height requirements?

Check out this list of Disneyland height requirements so you can plan ahead.

Disney World Height Requirements for Rides

Disney World Height Requirements for Rides

Has there ever been a more disappointing feeling than waiting in line for over an hour to take a plunge into the Briar Patch on a hot, summer day only to be turned away because your child isn’t tall enough to ride? I’ve seen this situation play out far too many times at Walt Disney World, with both parents and children getting upset because they had their hearts set on riding a certain attraction.

While it can be a frustrating and disheartening experience, these height requirements are in place to keep your loved ones safe. If you’re planning a trip to the Happiest Place on Earth, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the height requirements for all of the attractions at Disney World so you can help manage expectations.

Use Rider Switch When You Don’t Meet the Height Requirement

Remember, Disney World is a theme park built on family fun so the good news is that your entire family will most likely be able to enjoy the majority of rides at the parks. If there is something your child isn’t tall enough to ride, you can always utilize the Rider Switch system, which allows you and another adult in your party to ride your favorite attractions.

When entering the queue for an attraction, ask the Cast Member if Rider Switch is available. If it is, they will issue you a Ride Switch entitlement and direct you to wait in a designated area (usually outside of the ride). When the first party has finished the ride, the second party will be able to hop on without having to wait in line.

So now onto the rides and the Disney World Height Requirements for Rides!

Rides and Height Requirements at Animal Kingdom

Last but not least (for the four main theme parks, at least) is Animal Kingdom . Let’s explore these options, shall we?

Any Height Animal Kingdom Rides

  • Kilimanjaro Safaris (Africa)
  • Triceratop Spin (DinoLand U.S.A.)
  • Na’vi River Journey (Pandora – The World of Avatar)

Unfortunately, there’s not a ton of rides that are suitable for any age here at Animal Kingdom, BUT there are a ton of shows and interactive experiences your kids will (probably) love:

  • It’s Tough to be a Bug! (Discovery Island – this is a very loud, very dark and very scary show that I personally don’t believe is suitable for any age group. I’m an adult and it scares me!)
  • Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail (Africa)
  • The Oasis Exhibits (Oasis)
  • Discoveryland Island Trails (Discovery Island)
  • Affection Section (Rafiki’s Planet Watch)
  • The Animation Experience at Conservation Station (Rafiki’s Planet Watch)
  • The Maharajah Jungle Trek (Asia)
  • Wilderness Explorers (Multiple locations across Animal Kingdom)

  • Kali River Rapids (Asia)
  • DINOSAUR (DinoLand U.S.A — this is a very loud, dark, and scary ride that may not be suitable for all ages)
  • Avatar Flight of Passage (Pandora – the World of Avatar)
  • Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain (Asia)

Rides and Height Requirements at Typhoon Lagoon

While Typhoon Lagoon remains closed due to the Coronavirus pandemic, all of us here at WDW Vacation Tips are hopeful it will be returning soon since its counterpart Blizzard Beach has reopened without incident. The good news is that when this water park does finally reopen, the rides here are usually suitable for most age groups.

  • Keelhaul Falls
  • Gangplank Falls
  • Storm Slides
  • Miss Adventure Falls
  • Mayday Falls
  • Typhoon Lagoon Surf Pool
  • Castaway Creek
  • Crush ‘n’ Gusher
  • Humunga Kowabunga

Honorable Mention: Aerophile at Disney Springs

If you’ve ever visited Disney Springs, you’re familiar with Aerophile – the giant blue balloon that looms over the West Side of the shopping area. If you’re not, you’re in for a treat. This hand-painted helium balloon ascends 400 feet into the air and gives you a gorgeous view of Walt Disney World (and actual Florida) that you won’t find anywhere else.

Guests who are 12 years and older are allowed to ride by themselves, however, anyone under that age will need to be accompanied by a guest 18 years or older. This 8-minute balloon ride does not have a height requirement. A ticket costs $20 for ages 10 and older and $15 for guests between the ages of 3-9. Availability is provided on a first-come, first serve basis and the balloon will not fly in adverse weather conditions.

Final Thoughts

Unlike other theme parks that cater to older age groups, Walt Disney World has done a good job of creating rides that are (usually) fit for the entire family. While it may be disappointing that your little one isn’t tall enough to ride Splash Mountain or Big Thunder Mountain (yet), they eventually will be, which gives you another reason to book a trip in year or two when they can experience everything without any sort of restriction.

As we mentioned earlier, these height requirements are designed to keep EVERY member of your party safe. Even if a ride isn’t available to them this time, trust us when we say that there’s enough at every park to make everyone in your party happy.

Let us know what ride on this list is your favorite in the comments below. We want to hear from you!

Which Disney World Rides Have Height Requirements?

by David Mumpower · May 2, 2023

height requirement star tours

As a parent, you know that a trip to Walt Disney World will bring joy to your family, especially your children.

For its part, Disney has thought of your child’s safety every step of the way.

theme parks

Photo:visitorlando.com

You’ll never need to worry about whether your kid is ready for specific attractions. Disney has taken care of that for you with its height requirement guidelines.

Which Walt Disney World attractions have height requirements, and which park has the most of them? I think you’ll be surprised.

Mickey

Here’s what you need to know.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom – 4

Animal Kingdom 25th Anniversary Decorations Removed Entrance Tree of Life

Let’s start with the park that won’t surprise you at all.

Obviously, Disney designed Animal Kingdom with children in mind. They’re the target audience here.

So, Disney didn’t build attractions that would prevent small kids from riding, at least not at first.

Disney100 Sign

Disney100 Sign

None of the remaining attractions from Animal Kingdom’s opening day requires a height requirement.

Okay, that’s a bit misleading. DINOSAUR had a different name and theme then.

Then, less than a year after Animal Kingdom opened, Kali River Rapids opened. It, too, has a height requirement.

Kali River Rapids

Much later, Disney introduced Expedition Everest, followed by Avatar Flight of Passage.

That’s the entire list of Animal Kingdom attractions with height requirements. Here are the specifics:

  • Kali River Rapids – 38 inches or taller
  • DINOSAUR – 40 inches or taller
  • Expedition Everest – 44 inches or taller
  • Avatar Flight of Passage – 44 inches or taller

Flight of Passage

Let’s be clear that all children grow differently. Some increase height at a steady rate while others go through spurts.

So, what I’m about to say here is general in nature and may not apply to you.

height requirement star tours

According to Stanford Medicine , the average four-year-old should fall into the 40-inch range. Most kids reach that height by the time they’re five.

When you evaluate these attractions, Kali River Rapids shouldn’t scare your child at all. DINOSAUR theoretically could since the Audio-Animatronics are lifelike.

height requirement star tours

You can decide based on the maturity of your child and how well they deal with surprise.

Most six-year-olds will reach 44 inches. At a minimum, they should accomplish it by the time they’re eight.

Expedition Everest

Photo: hotels.com

Expedition Everest can overwhelm adults. Will your child love it? Probably. Should they ride it the instant they reach 44 inches tall? Again, that’s up to you.

Avatar Flight of Passage encapsulates Disney Imagineering magic and should be fine, though.

2023 Flower & Garden Festival

Surprisingly, EPCOT doesn’t require height standards on most of its attractions. It ties Animal Kingdom with the fewest at four.

You can probably guess three of them, too. They’re all thrill rides/roller coasters.

height requirement star tours

Here are the EPCOT attractions with height restrictions:

  • Soarin’ Around the World – 40 inches or taller
  • Mission: SPACE – 40 inches or taller
  • Test Track – 40 inches or taller
  • Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind – 42 inches or taller

The age statistics I just quoted apply here as well. Most should be able to ride everything here by the time they’re six and possibly as young as four years old.

EPCOT Tweens

Credit: Disney

Personally, I wouldn’t advise Mission: SPACE, even the Green version, until your child is a bit older.

Soarin’ should be fine the day your kid can legally ride, though. Similarly, I wouldn’t worry too much about Test Track.

Cosmic Rewind comes with some complexity, as it is a bit intense…but your child WILL want to ride it. Good luck talking them out of it!

Magic Kingdom – 6

Magic Kingdom 100

It’s definitely a new look!

Let’s start with the list:

  • Tomorrowland Speedway – 32 inches or taller
  • The Barnstormer – 35 inches or taller
  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train – 38 inches or taller
  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad – 40 inches or taller
  • Space Mountain – 44 inches or taller
  • Tron Lightcycle / Run – 48 inches or taller

Splash Mountain

As an FYI, Splash Mountain had a restriction as well. Guests needed to be 40 inches for it. I’d expect the same at Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

Also, two of these ride restrictions amuse me. Tomorrowland Speedway and The Barnstormer target the children’s demographic heavily. These are kiddie rides.

height requirement star tours

Still, Disney suggests you shouldn’t allow a child to ride Tomorrowland Speedway until they’re two or three, while The Barnstormer is for three-year-olds and up.

There is a factor here about the size of the safety gear. A smaller child could feasibly slip out, and nobody wants that, even on a low-velocity attraction.

Early Morning Magic

With Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Disney is saying to wait until you’re four or probably five. That sounds right to me.

As for Space Mountain, your kid will want to ride it no matter what.

Space Mountain

The range of six or seven years old is probably when they’ll start showing interest in it anyway.

Finally, we haven’t had a 48-inch requirement to discuss yet. Stanford suggests most kids reach this height when they’re eight, but some may need until ten.

height requirement star tours

I think that’s a fair assessment of when a child will be mature enough for Tron anyway.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios – 7

height requirement star tours

Given the sheer volume of Magic Kingdom rides, you may be surprised to hear that Hollywood Studios operates the most with height requirements.

When you think about the various rides at each park, it makes sense, though.

Two Years Toy Story Land

Photo: Steven Diaz

Here are the height requirements at Hollywood Studios:

  • Alien Swirling Saucers – 32 inches or taller
  • Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run — 38 inches or taller
  • Slinky Dog Dash – 38 inches or taller
  • Star Tours – The Adventures Continue – 40 inches or taller
  • Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance – 40 inches or taller
  • The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror – 40 inches or taller
  • Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith – 48 inches or taller

Pixar

You’re probably the most surprised about Alien Swirling Saucers, a sneaky-aggressive ride. It’s more of a safety belt issue, though.

Most kids can ride by the time they’re in their terrible twos.

Toy Story Land

The three Star Wars rides and Slinky Dog Dash similarly aren’t worrisome. Star Tours and Smugglers Run are basically the same ride anyway.

With Slinky Dog Dash, it’s not a speed demon roller coaster. Parents can safely allow their kids to ride any of the three the instant they clear the height restriction.

theme park reservation system

As for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, that’s a tougher call. It’s probably the most aggressive Disney roller coaster.

Should a child in the eight-to-ten range ride it? I mean, that’s ultimately up to the parent.

Simply be aware that your kids will have no idea who Aerosmith is, though. Yes, you’re old.

  • Spaso-Yefimiev Monastery (1352) – this is the largest monastery in Suzdal and with its large fortified walls it is often mistaken for being the Suzdal Kremlin. Today it is a museum with various exhibitions including its main cathedral with its amazing frescos.
  • Museum of the Wooden Architecture and Peasant life – this collection of wooden buildings, including churches and windmills, from various parts of European Russia is one of the best of architectural museums in Russia. It now resembles a village in itself made up of beautiful examples of 17th - 19th century wooden buildings which have been brought here to protect them from fire or from being dismantled.
  • Trading Rows (1812) – Suzdal’s set of trading rows are still used for their original purpose and a souvenir market is held outside where you can buy a whole range of souvenirs, including bottles of the mead for which Suzdal is famed.

During the transfer you will pass through the territory known as Opolye where the landscape is not at all typical for the north-eastern part of European Russia and characterised by its open fields and wide open spaces.

7 DAY / ROSTOV VELIKY

  • Rostov Kremlin  – the former residence of the metropolitan of the Rostov Eparchy which is called a kremlin due to its large, fortified walls which were built more to look impressive rather than to provide a defensive function. The white stone kremlin is a monument of pre-Petrine Russian architecture.
  • Dormition Cathedral  – the main cathedral in the kremlin which dates from the 16th century and was modelled of the Dormition Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin. It is 60 metres in height. Next to the cathedral is a belfry containing 15 unique bells, whose sound is widely celebrated across Russia.
  • Museum of Rostov Finift  – Rostov finift enamel painting has been a famous local handicraft since the 18th century. This museum has over 3000 examples on display.
  • Spaso-Yakovlevsky Monastery  – Rostov’s Spaso-Yakovlevsky Monastery was founded in approximately 1390 by Bishop Jacob (Yakov) of Rostov, after whom it is now named. After the Kremlin it is the most beautiful sight in the city with its eclectic Conception of Anna Church and St Jacob of Rostov's Church.

8 DAY / YAROSLAVL

  • Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery  – one of the largest, richest and best fortified monasteries of the 16th century. It is closely associated with the volunteer army of Minin and Pozharsky which was based here while it prepared to liberate Moscow from the Poles in the early 17th century. Inside the monastery is the Transfiguration Cathedral which is the oldest surviving building in Yaroslavl and was built on the site of an even older church between 1506 and 1516. It interior is decorated with spectacular frescos. To protect these unique frescos it can only be visited between May and October.
  • Volga Embankment  - this embankment running along the River Volga is one of the prettiest places in Yaroslavl and several historical churches and other buildings are located here. From here you can enjoy great views of the largest river in Europe.
  • St Elijah the Prophet’s Church  (17th Century) - this church is a masterpiece of ancient Russian architecture which is stunningly beautiful on the outside and on the inside thanks to its detailed frescos and amazing iconostasis. To protect these unique frescos it can only be visited between May and October.

Dubai’s Extraordinary Flooding: Here’s What to Know

Images of a saturated desert metropolis startled the world, prompting talk of cloud seeding, climate change and designing cities for intensified weather.

  • Share full article

A dozen or so cars, buses and trucks sit in axle-deep water on a wide, flooded highway.

By Raymond Zhong

Scenes of flood-ravaged neighborhoods in one of the planet’s driest regions have stunned the world this week. Heavy rains in the United Arab Emirates and Oman submerged cars, clogged highways and killed at least 21 people. Flights out of Dubai’s airport, a major global hub, were severely disrupted.

The downpours weren’t a freak event — forecasters anticipated the storms several days out and issued warnings. But they were certainly unusual. Here’s what to know.

Heavy rain there is rare, but not unheard-of.

On average, the Arabian Peninsula receives a scant few inches of rain a year, although scientists have found that a sizable chunk of that precipitation falls in infrequent but severe bursts, not as periodic showers.

U.A.E. officials said the 24-hour rain total on Tuesday was the country’s largest since records there began in 1949 . But parts of the nation had experienced an earlier round of thunderstorms just last month.

Oman, with its coastline on the Arabian Sea, is also vulnerable to tropical cyclones. Past storms there have brought torrential rain, powerful winds and mudslides, causing extensive damage.

Global warming is projected to intensify downpours.

Stronger storms are a key consequence of human-caused global warming. As the atmosphere gets hotter, it can hold more moisture, which can eventually make its way down to the earth as rain or snow.

But that doesn’t mean rainfall patterns are changing in precisely the same way across every corner of the globe.

In their latest assessment of climate research , scientists convened by the United Nations found there wasn’t enough data to have firm conclusions about rainfall trends in the Arabian Peninsula and how climate change was affecting them. The researchers said, however, that if global warming were to be allowed to continue worsening in the coming decades, extreme downpours in the region would quite likely become more intense and more frequent.

The role of cloud seeding isn’t clear.

The U.A.E. has for decades worked to increase rainfall and boost water supplies by seeding clouds. Essentially, this involves shooting particles into clouds to encourage the moisture to gather into larger, heavier droplets, ones that are more likely to fall as rain or snow.

Cloud seeding and other rain-enhancement methods have been tried across the world, including in Australia, China, India, Israel, South Africa and the United States. Studies have found that these operations can, at best, affect precipitation modestly — enough to turn a downpour into a bigger downpour, but probably not a drizzle into a deluge.

Still, experts said pinning down how much seeding might have contributed to this week’s storms would require detailed study.

“In general, it is quite a challenge to assess the impact of seeding,” said Luca Delle Monache, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. Dr. Delle Monache has been leading efforts to use artificial intelligence to improve the U.A.E.’s rain-enhancement program.

An official with the U.A.E.’s National Center of Meteorology, Omar Al Yazeedi, told news outlets this week that the agency didn’t conduct any seeding during the latest storms. His statements didn’t make clear, however, whether that was also true in the hours or days before.

Mr. Al Yazeedi didn’t respond to emailed questions from The New York Times on Thursday, and Adel Kamal, a spokesman for the center, didn’t immediately have further comment.

Cities in dry places just aren’t designed for floods.

Wherever it happens, flooding isn’t just a matter of how much rain comes down. It’s also about what happens to all that water once it’s on the ground — most critically, in the places people live.

Cities in arid regions often aren’t designed to drain very effectively. In these areas, paved surfaces block rain from seeping into the earth below, forcing it into drainage systems that can easily become overwhelmed.

One recent study of Sharjah , the capital of the third-largest emirate in the U.A.E., found that the city’s rapid growth over the past half century had made it vulnerable to flooding at far lower levels of rain than before.

Malaysia set to be RE powerhouse due to being the geopolitical eye of the storm, say industry players

KL20 Summit 2024 to attract high-quality investments - PM

Single window platform for startups launched, fund-of-funds to fuel local firms.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is poised to become a powerhouse in clean and renewable energy in the Southeast Asian region, especially with the emergence of high-tech industries driving up the electricity demand, say industry players.

Speaking at the KL20 Summit 2024 during a forum titled "The Future of Clean Energy,” OCI Holdings Ltd chairman Lee Woo-Hyun highlighted several factors making Malaysia an attractive destination for energy investments which include its strategic geographical location, abundance of potential human capital and the conducive policies adopted by the government.

Lee emphasised Malaysia's stability amid geopolitical tensions, making it an appealing choice for industry players looking to secure their supply chain networks.

"Malaysia has proven to be beneficial due to its neutral stance in geopolitical tensions. This makes the country highly potential for clean energy investments," he said.

However, Lee noted that for Malaysia to fully realise its potential, it needs to focus on developing the skill sets of its labour force, stressing the importance of training the workforce to meet the demands of clean energy and emerging high-tech industries.

"The problem is there is a strong mismatch between some graduates' actual skills and the skill sets required by companies. There is still a learning curve to bridge this gap," Lee said.

Meanwhile, Google’s Asia Pacific Head of Clean Energy and Power Giorgio Fortunato, also a panellist in the forum, emphasised the importance of a stable energy landscape for the growth of the digital economy as tech companies rely on stable and reliable electricity to operate their data centres effectively.

"We are currently in a transition period where many markets across the Asia Pacific are establishing new policy frameworks and mechanisms for energy users like us to procure carbon-free energy. There is no better way to operate data centres than using clean energy," he said.

Fortunato added that the tech giant is committed to providing upskilling opportunities for 300,000 Malaysians by 2026. Additionally, they are exploring the potential establishment of a data centre for their digital services, accelerating artificial intelligence (AI) innovation to enhance economic competitiveness and developing cloud-first policies for the AI economy.

He said these initiatives are part of a collaboration outlined in a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed with Malaysia last year which was part of Google's broader initiative to foster growth in businesses of all sizes, empowering them to become more competitive in the digital economy.- Bernama
