Grand Canyon Helicopter Tour, Above and Below the Rim Extended Air Tour

Choosing the Right Grand Canyon Helicopter Tour At nearly 2,000 square miles, the Grand Canyon is a behemoth. Full-day flights can showcase only a fraction of the natural wonder’s splendor. To get the most out of your experience, you’ll need to put some thought into selecting your helicopter Grand Canyon ride. Are you exploring the West Rim or the South Rim? Looking for a Las Vegas Grand Canyon helicopter tour combo? What time of the year are you visiting? What kind of helicopter are you flying? Let’s look at a few of the variables you should consider when booking your adventure.  What’s the Difference Between the West Rim and South Rim? Generally, there are two types of Grand Canyon helicopter flights: a tour of the West Rim featuring many iconic sites, or of the pristine wilderness of the South Rim. Since the rims are hundreds of miles apart, the tour you choose will largely depend on where you are staying.  If you're in Las Vegas or Boulder City and want to spend a day or afternoon at the Canyon, a West Rim tour is the way to go for practical reasons: it's the geographically closest. However, if you're planning a full-on Grand Canyon vacation, chances are you'll be staying on the South Rim, in which case, the choice is obvious. In terms of sightseeing, many West Rim tours give you the opportunity to see Lake Mead, the Hoover Dam, Bypass Bridge, and several native reservations. If you're looking to get out of Sin City for a day or an afternoon, a West Rim tour is the best way to access the splendor of the American Southwest. Moreover, because of the West Rim’s proximity to Vegas, most helicopter tours in this region include round-trip shuttle service. Conversely, the South Rim is “Grand Canyon Classic”—it has some of the most photographed vistas. When you see a shot of the canyon on a postcard, chances are it was taken from the South Rim. It features the desert-y painted cliffs we all recognize. South Rim tours take off from Grand Canyon National Park Airport, near Tusayan. Often, you'll need to provide your own transport to the airport. It’s worth pointing out that no one tour is objectively “better” than the next. Regardless of which rim you fly, you’ll be treated to ultra-comfy seats, wide windows with 180-degree views, and flexible flight schedules that range anywhere from under an hour to a full day.  What Will You See on a West Rim Helicopter Flight?   Your West Rim Grand Canyon helicopter tour from Las Vegas begins with a pass over Black Canyon, where the Colorado River snakes between the El Dorado Mountains of Nevada to the west and the Black Mountains of Arizona to the east. Along the way, you'll see Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States when full. Its azure waters are held back by one of the greatest engineering feats of the twentieth century, the Hoover Dam. Built in the 1930s, this U.S. National Historic Landmark provides hydroelectric power to Southern California, Nevada, Arizona, and Mexico. Traversing the canyon just below the dam is yet another manmade marvel, Bypass Bridge. Nineteen-hundred feet long with a roadway 840 feet above the Colorado River, Bypass Bridge has the widest concrete arch in the Western Hemisphere and is the second highest bridge in the United States. The numbers are impressive. But when viewed from the air, even the largest man-made structures are dwarfed by the enormousness of the nature surrounding them. Your helicopter follows the winding Colorado then crests the Grand Wash Cliffs. Here, the grandeur of the Canyon stretches as far as the eye can see.  Your tour continues over the mesas, pillars, and buttresses that fill the West Rim landscape. Check out Fortification Hill, a 3,700-foot flat-top mountain formed by an ancient massive lava flow. A West Rim helicopter tour highlights both spectacular human accomplishment as well as the sheer vastness and mystery of the world we inhabit. What Will You See on a South Rim Helicopter Flight?   A South Rim helicopter tour is the ideal way to see the iconic formations of the Grand Canyon. After taking off from Tusayan, you'll fly over Kaibab National Forest, home to some of the tallest ponderosa pines in the world as well as white-tailed deer, elk, coyote—and the rare cougar and black bear. Next, descend into the Dragon Corridor, the deepest and widest part of the Canyon, and experience the heart of the Grand Canyon wilderness.  Through millions of years of erosion, the Colorado River has laid bare the entire geological history of the North American continent. You'll soar over dramatic colors, rock pillars, and otherworldly phenomena too numerous to count. See the Tower of Ra and the Temples of Osiris and Horus, a trinity of mountains that call to mind ancient Egyptian pyramids. At the very bottom of the canyon, two-billion-year-old exposed rock from the Vishnu Schist is visible in the Inner Gorge. Witness the confluence of the Little Colorado River and the larger Colorado, where the narrow and deep Marble Canyon gives way to the entrance of Upper Granite Gorge. The Little Colorado gets its distinctively bright blue color from limestone and travertine in its waters, though cloudbursts can cause its color to change rapidly. On a South Rim helicopter tour, the sheer number of gorgeous sights in one place is sure to boggle your mind. But Wait… There’s Also a North Rim! For Grand Canyon visitors, the North Rim offers a chance for a quieter, more pristine experience. In fact, it's only open for part of the year due to the heavy snowfall it experiences in winter. However, it's possible to see by helicopter year-round, so you can experience its quiet beauty regardless of when you plan your trip! If you're intrigued but staying on the South Rim, you're in luck—many South Rim helicopter tours also pass over the North Rim, allowing you to observe the differences in vegetation and weather on the two sides of the canyon. From the air, the North Rim's rugged scenery provides a sharp contrast to the colorful cliffs of the South Rim. Whereas the South Rim features mainly pines and firs, the northern Kaibab National Forest with its snowy highland climate can support birch, maple, and oak trees. A North Rim helicopter tour is a chance to see a less-frequented but equally stunning side of the Grand Canyon. How much are Grand Canyon helicopter tours?

Helicopter rides over the Grand Canyon vary in price depending on whether you want an air-only tour or want to land at the West Rim or for a Champagne picnic at the bottom of the canyon. Tours departing from the South Rim can be combined with hummer tours for top and bottom views!

What do you wear on a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon?

Dress according to the season. In the summer months, it is best to wear sunglasses and sunscreen.

What Models of Helicopter Fly Over the Grand Canyon? When you lift off on your Grand Canyon helicopter tour, you're safe in the hands of an experienced pilot helming a state-of-the-art piece of machinery. Chances are, you'll be on one of two models: the EC-130 or the Airbus AStar. The Airbus EC-130, also known as the ECOSTAR, is a thoroughly modern chopper designed for an optimal touring experience. An all-glass cockpit allows two passengers to sit next to the pilot, while wraparound windows make sure everyone on board has a great view. It can fit up to seven people. Thanks to anti-torque technology, the EC-130 has a much quieter engine than the average helicopter, enhancing your experience, and its Active Vibration Control System provides a smoother ride, too. In short, the EC-130 is designed with its air-tour passengers in mind, and it shows.  Alternatively, you might score a flight on an AStar, the same model that landed on Mount Everest. This six-seater helicopter is a workhorse. Used by the British military, firefighters, and rescue missions, this helicopter is renowned for its high visibility, streamlined handling, and exceptionally low noise levels. Up in the air in an AStar, you'll enjoy your Grand Canyon helicopter tour even more knowing you're in a vehicle used by the pros. Do Helicopter Tours Ever Land in the Grand Canyon?   Yes! Many Grand Canyon helicopter tours give you the chance to touch down and explore the wilderness for yourself. These landings take place to the west of the National Park in the Havasupai and Hualapai Reservations, some in areas only accessible by helicopter.  On the ground, you'll have the chance to photograph rock formations and the roaring Colorado River. To learn the history of the peoples who have called the Grand Canyon home for nearly a thousand years, consider a tour that stops at the Native American Village at Eagle Point. If you're planning a romantic getaway, choose a tour that offers a Champagne toast and picnic with your landing in the Grand Canyon. Feeling adventurous? You can pair your flight with a raft down the Colorado River in a pontoon, a wild jaunt down the canyon trails in a Hummer or Jeep, or experience a taste of the Old West in a wagon or horseback ride led by a real cowboy. But if you're pressed for time or not sure how long you'd like to spend in the air, don't worry—there are shorter trips without landings available. Test out the experience with a 15-minute flight. Chances are, you'll be so impressed you'll want to get back up in the air for a full-day tour! When’s the Best Time of the Year to Take a Grand Canyon Helicopter Tour? The biggest advantage of seeing the Grand Canyon on a helicopter tour is that you're not at the mercy of muddy trails, closed roads, or the extreme climates of this dramatic landscape. Helicopter tours are available year-round with various pros and cons to each season. Grand Canyon Helicopter Tours in Winter In the winter, a particular plus of a helicopter tour is that you can catch the sights of the North Rim, even when the road to that side of the canyon is closed and the rim is completely inaccessible. Plus, the Grand Canyon looks beautiful decked in a coat of white snow! Of course, snowstorms can make flight schedules somewhat unpredictable. But if you fly on a clear day, the views are unparalleled and make for a totally unique glimpse of the canyon. Grand Canyon Helicopter Tours in Spring In spring, both the North and South rims have wildflowers in full bloom. Yellow, purple, and orange blossoms carpet the canyon floor in a kaleidoscope of color. It's not a sight to be missed! Note that there are also fewer tourists to be seen, making for more interesting photo opportunities. Grand Canyon Helicopter Tours in Summer Summer with its long, sunny days has the ideal weather for a Grand Canyon helicopter tour. If you don't have a lot of time and are looking for reliably good weather, it's your best bet. Just keep in mind that summer is the most popular time of year for tourists, so you won't get the sense of having the place to yourself. Grand Canyon Helicopter Tours in Fall Once school is back in session in the autumn, the crowds thin out. Take advantage of both a quieter canyon and stunning fall foliage by planning your helicopter tour in September or November. The North Rim, with its wider variety of tree species, is an ideal destination for an autumnal leaf-peeping tour, but the aspens on the South Rim turn a stunning shade of yellow too. Start Planning your Grand Canyon Helicopter Tour Today! Visiting the many viewpoints of the Grand Canyon by car or hiking the gorges are both great ways to take in the sights. But if you'd like to get a broader view of this geological marvel, a Grand Canyon helicopter tour is the experience you need. It's the only way to cover miles of the Canyon in the span of minutes and provides better views than any point on the ground. Best of all, the convenient round-trip shuttles offered from Boulder City, Las Vegas, and Phoenix mean that when staying in those cities, you can experience the Grand Canyon without worrying about any of the logistics—even your meals are taken care of. You'll step off the chopper with a newfound appreciation for the natural wonders of our planet and photographs and memories that will never fade.

Best time for a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon

  • Sunset is the best time for a helicopter tour and photo opportunities, given the golden light that shines across the Grand Canyon.
  • Midday is also an excellent time to see the canyon due to the fewer shadows.
  • In summer, an early morning flight is recommended for cooler weather. It also gives you the opportunity to miss the peak crowds if you land at the West Rim.

What you need to know before your Grand Canyon helicopter tour from Las Vegas

  • To balance the aircraft, helicopter tours have weight limits , typically around 250-300 lbs per person. If you weigh above this, you will be required to purchase an additional seat. This can be done at check-in, but it’s best to consult your booking page beforehand to be prepared.
  • All passengers 18 and above must provide a photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport.

Taking a Grand Canyon helicopter tour is an experience you will never forget. After all, observing this natural wonder from a birds-eye view is far superior to seeing it from ground level.

In fact, I first saw the Grand Canyon from one of the overlooks, and I was a bit disappointed. The ridge was full of people, so I had to battle the crowds, and it was a cloudy day, so the views weren’t that great. However, when I took a Grand Canyon air tour , it was completely different and I got to see the full magnitude of the canyon, its crevasses, and the surrounding landmasses.

Over the years, we’ve taken several helicopter tours over the Grand Canyon , but the first one, the one we took during our 10-day West Coast road trip , will be always special so I can’t recommend this ride enough. We’ve also taken this tour and this flight from Las Vegas, and now that we live in Vegas, we’re excited to see even more.

Grand Canyon from above, aerial tour grand canyon

If you’re still not sure which is the best Grand Canyon helicopter tour for you, I’ll share my top recommendations, which range in price, duration, and route. You can even depart from Grand Canyon Airport, so I’m sure you’ll find an excursion that suits your trip.

Also, did you know that you can take a Grand Canyon helicopter landing tour below the rim? This is an ideal option if you want to avoid the strenuous hike to the bottom or if you want to add a Colorado River cruise to your tour.

Other Grand Canyon helicopter tour companies

As you can imagine, flying over the Grand Canyon is quite an experience, so it’s not surprising that there are several helicopter tour companies in the area:

  • Papillon Grand Canyon Helicopters : Papillon has been in business for over 50 years and is the largest Grand Canyon helicopter tour company.  We found them to have a variety of tour options from Las Vegas, the South Rim, and Grand Canyon West for every budget. You can read our full Papillon Helicopters review for more info.
  • Maverick : Maverick is another well-known company that, like Papillon, uses EcoStar helicopters for tours over the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas.
  • Sundance : Sundance has been in business since 1985 and offers Grand Canyon helicopter tours out of Las Vegas.
  • Vegas Tours : This company also operates out of Las Vegas and provides scenic flying tours of the West and South Rims.

After flying over the Grand Canyon many times, I can tell you that we’ve had the best experiences with Papillon. This company always does a great job, offering us beautiful views, safe trips, and friendly assistance.

My experience taking a Grand Canyon helicopter ride

If I had to choose one word to describe my experience flying over the Grand Canyon , it would be “magical.”

The view from the ground-level outlooks didn’t live up to my expectations at all, and I couldn’t capture the true size and majesty of the canyon. Indeed, it all depends on the time of day and the lighting conditions, but I would still 100% recommend taking a Grand Canyon helicopter tour to see this place from above. Not only will you see what a marvel the Grand Canyon is, but you won’t have to deal with all the crowds on the ground!

Aerial view of the Grand Canyon, the grand canyon helicopter tour

Before booking with Papillon, I read plenty of Grand Canyon helicopter tour reviews to make the best choice for my schedule, budget, and preferences. I also made sure to buy the best travel insurance for the USA for any unexpected situations.

We ended up taking the South Rim Airplane Tour because it was one of the most affordable options. Plus, we wanted a tour that left from the South Rim (to fly within the National Park limits), as well as an airplane so we could go higher and explore more remote locations. The tour was the perfect choice for us, and we could appreciate the canyon’s full scope.

Over the years, we ended up taking that trip again, as well as the Golden Eagle Helicopter Tour and the Grand Celebration Tour . If you want to take a Grand Canyon helicopter tour from Las Vegas , I recommend the latter excursion since it does a below-the-rim landing. In addition, it’s a complete aerial tour of the Grand Canyon ’s West Rim, and it’s one of my favorite tours from Las Vegas .

My Grand Canyon helicopter tour review

As someone who has flown over the Grand Canyon quite a bit, I have some tips to ensure you have the best trip possible:

  • First, it’s better to book your flight for early in the morning or just before sunset so you can get the best views.
  • Second, check the weather forecast since the tour operator may cancel your trip if the conditions aren’t right.
  • Lastly, limit what you eat about two hours before the tour. My mum learned this the hard way when she got sick during our ride. If you’re prone to dizziness, take some medication beforehand.

That said, the view from a Grand Canyon helicopter is unmatched, and as long as you follow my advice, you should be fine. Even though we’ve taken several Grand Canyon helicopter tours , we’re always amazed by the incredible landmasses, the ancient stone walls, the undulating Colorado River, and the stunning gorges and plateaus.

Grand Canyon helicopter tour FAQs

If you’re still not sure which Grand Canyon helicopter tour to choose, or you have some concerns, here are the answers to some common questions. Of course, feel free to leave us a comment if you have any other questions. We’ll be happy to help!

Which is better: a Grand Canyon helicopter tour or an airplane tour?

When you’re choosing between a Grand Canyon helicopter ride or an airplane tour, consider that airplanes can fly further and higher. So, a Grand Canyon airplane tour will be better if you want to focus on the depth and vastness of the canyon, or if you’re interested in landscape photography.

That said, Grand Canyon helicopter tours are awesome, especially if you want closer views of the canyon walls and gorges. Also, if you want to descend below the rim, remember that you can only do that with a helicopter.

Is it better to take a Grand Canyon helicopter tour from the South Rim or West Rim?

Grand Canyon National Park consists of the South, North, and East Rims, and is managed by the U.S. National Park Service. However, the West Rim is maintained by the Hualapai Tribe, and so, it is a private tourist attraction.

In general, you’ll get the best views with a helicopter tour over the Grand Canyon South Rim . Since below-the-rim landings aren’t allowed in this part of the park, the natural environment is better protected here.

On the other hand, the West Rim is quite popular, and this is the only place where you can take a Grand Canyon helicopter landing tour to explore the canyon floor. Moreover, if you’re interested in other attractions like boat rides, they’re available at Grand Canyon West. Finally, the West Rim is also closer to Las Vegas (2.5 hours versus 4 hours to the South Rim), so take that into account.

When is the best time for a Grand Canyon helicopter tour?

The best time for a Grand Canyon helicopter tour is early morning when the desert and the canyon’s rock formations have an intense reddish glow. There will also be less turbulence in the morning, and it won’t be as hot or hazy outside.

As an alternative, you can take a Grand Canyon helicopter tour at sunset . You’ll get some very nice views, and the temperatures will be cooler than they are during the day.

How much does a Grand Canyon helicopter tour cost?

The price of a Grand Canyon helicopter tour can be as low as $169 per person. However, the cost depends on factors like the duration of the flight, the aircraft, and any extra activities you do during the tour, so some excursions exceed $1,000.

Are there cheap Grand Canyon helicopter tours?

Flying over the Grand Canyon is a memorable and worthwhile experience, so if you have a limited budget, I suggest an airplane tour. This is a cheaper option, but the views are just as beautiful. You can see how we organized our budget to travel along the West Coast in 10 days to see how we managed to do a Grand Canyon airplane tour without splashing out.

Should I book my Grand Canyon helicopter tour in advance?

Yes! If you’re going to be traveling in the summer, I recommend booking your Grand Canyon helicopter ride at least one month in advance. We traveled in August and had to carefully plan our itinerary to get to the Grand Canyon on the particular day that had an available spot.

What should I bring on a Grand Canyon helicopter tour?

It’s a good idea to wear long sleeves and pants, as well as comfortable closed-toe shoes. Also, you’ll want to protect yourself from the strong desert sun with sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Of course, don’t forget to bring your camera!

Is a Grand Canyon helicopter tour worth it?

Yes! There is nothing quite like soaring over such a massive natural structure. Flying over the Grand Canyon in a helicopter with panoramic windows helps you see all the crevasses, gorges, and walls of the canyon. Plus, the views are much better than they are from the ground, where people are often crowding the outlooks.

I hope you feel better prepared to find the best Grand Canyon helicopter tour for your budget, preferences, and travel dates. If you have any other questions, leave them below, and I’ll be happy to answer them.

Hi Chris, This part of the country is my absolute favorite. I think you’ll like our guide on taking a road trip from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon ; it’ll give you some ideas for your itinerary!

Hello! Thank you for posting and sharing your experience. On the Helicopter and/or Airplane tour, is the ‘Seat Assignment’ a concern? My family (wife, 3 kids and I) had the Heli [tour] experience at the Canadian Rocky Mountain. One kid sat in the front with the Pilot. The rest sat in the back BUT, we’re face-2-face: 2 facing front, 2 facing back. The ones facing back did NOT get to see what the ‘frontal’ passengers did, bad experience. This time, it’ll be just my wife and I. We prefer Heli tour. What is your suggestion. Thank you in advanced. Unggit & Piyanut – Buffalo, NY

At the airplane tours, everyone gets the same stunning views. On the helicopter tour, you can pay to have a front seat next to the pilot. We paid for that in our last helicopter tour to Grand Canyon from Las Vegas last month and it was worthy!

But I think you will enjoy the tour even if you don’t get that seat since no one in the helicopter is facing back. Are you taking the tour from the Grand Canyon South Rim terminal or from Las Vegas? I can recommend you which is the one I have like the most so far!

' src=

Best experience in my life. I took the helicopter tour from Grand Canyon South Rim. Next time I will do the landing tour from West Rim.

' src=

I am planning to do the landing tour too. I hope next month! But I will do it from Las Vegas!

Thank you very much for recommend those tours. I spent only one day in Las Vegas and decided to take the Grand Celebration tour thanks to your post. It was amazing. I am so glad I found you blog!
